A Specimen of Prose Libre
by Ellis Parker Butler

This is a free country and I have just as much right to whang the accepted styles of writing prose as Amy Lowell has to biff the good old verse forms on the bean.

What are the rules of prose, verse, grammar, punctuation and such things among friends? If I want to cut loose from the common herd and stick up like a sore thumb who shall say me nay?

If I am too lazy to hunt rhymes and would be a bum poet if I did then let me have the free advertising of freak verse forms.

If I am too weak in ideas to grab your attention with ordinary prose, then let me invent prose libre and the Jays will go crazy over it.

It is better to be a nut than to be a nit.
