Beb Books
Now available!
I began Beb Books in 2003 with the intention of reprinting a variety
of fantastic literature that had not been reprinted before or only reprinted
in abridged form.
I never made much money selling these reprints and having retired have decided
to release as ePub editions for free.
The stories are posted on Mediafire in the following shared folder:
http://www.mediafire.com/folder/p56wc0bxuidzr/Documents
There are a large number of files available there. Here’s an introduction
to a number of them.
Johnston MCulley was a prolific writer from 1905 to 1960. I have posted
eight public domain novels and novellas in ePub format.
McCulley_At His Mercy-rev1.epub
From 1909 Argosy, this is the tale of a man who has discovered the secret
of electronic force, has set a force field around a city and warns itsinhabitants
that he plans to level it. Only two telegraph operators trapped inside the
city dare oppose him. I reprintedthis in 2011.
McCulley_Daughter of the Idol-rev1.epub
From Railroad Man’s Magazinefrom 1909-1910, this is a story of a boy who
stowed awayon a ship to avoid an onshore fight, only to find that he’s trapped
on the ship with the ruffians he tried to avoid. Hebefriends a young lady
who had been kidnapped and is being takento a distant issue where she has
a mysterious relationship with an idol there. Reprinted as a Beb Book in
2013.
McCulley_King of Chaos-rev1.epub
Published complete in the June 1912 of The Argosy, a young man is kipnapped
to a south seas island where his grandfather had been king of a pirate horde
and his fated to ascend the throne -- if he can live long enough to get there.
This was a Beb Book release in 2013,
McCulley_Shipmates with Horror-rev1.epub
A lucrative shipping contract rests on a swift trip down the coast of California
but a series of supernatural seeming incidents has spooked the crew. Can
the captain retain command of his ship and get to the bottom of the haunting.
An Argosy serial from 1908-1909 and reprinted for the first time in 2011.
McCulley-The Jungle Trail-improved.epub
A novella from All-Story Weekly, A tale of the veterans of Balboa’s march
across Panamato discover the Pacific ocean and conceited egos of late arrival
caballeros. Think of it as a proto-Zorro story. Published in 1917 and reprinted
a century later in 2018.
McCulley-Wild Norene.epub
Another of McCulley’s novellas, Norene is the over-indulged daughter of
a gun-running captain. When the captain hears a sailor boast that he could
tameher in a week he arranges to shanghai the man and threatens toframe him
for a crime unless he can convince the girl marry him. With Mexican revenuers
on their heels it will be a challenge tokeep anyone out of prison. First
published in The All-Story Cavalier Weekly in 1914 and reprinted as a Beb
Book in 2018.
McCulley-Curse of Capistrano (Zorro#1).epub
While Zorro is a trademarkedcharacter, The Curse of Capistrano is in the
public domain. Thanks to the kindness of Ray Skirsky I was about to copy thetext
from its original All-Story Weekly appearance. First published in 1919, this
Beb Book reprint was released in 2007.
McCulley-The Further Adventures of Zorro (Zorro#2).epub
Surprisingly The Curse of Capistrano was not a hit with readers. It was,
however, picked up as a vehicle for Douglas Fairbanks. The success of The
Mark of Zorro inspired McCulley to write a sequel that appeared inThe Argosy
All-Story Weekly in 1922. The sequel adds maritime adventures to the usual
mix of horse-riding and sword-fighting, obviously intended to appeal to Mr.
Fairbanks, but the studio went in another direction. McCulley dropped the
character until 1932 when the Frank R, Munsey Co. enticed him to write further
stories aboutZorro. This story was first reprinted by Beb Books in 2011,
All these stories and more are available to download, for free at:

Weird fiction has long been not only unappreciated but actively maltreated
by orthodox esthetic evaluation, but its stature has improved considerably
in modern times, and that has encouraged a reexamination of the genre’s history.
It has required nearly two centuries since the beginnings of modern weird
fiction in the cradle of the Romantic Movement for the concept to be properly
formulated, and the course of its development usefully mapped.
That cartography can now be carried out with a reasonable degree of accuracy,
as the present collection, albeit limited intime and space, hopefully illustrates.
The book hopefully shows thatfiction depicting hypothetical aberrations in
nature or perception isnot a necessarily a symptom of aberration on the part
of the author, but frequently quite the opposite: evidence of a sanity contemplatingits
own potential limits and uncertainties, in a context that is estheticrather
than diagnostic. ‘
Romanticisme is not dead, and is no less preciouslymodern today than it
was two centuries ago, and weird fiction isnot the least of its achievements.

Blood 'N' Thunder
/ Murania Press
BLOOD 'N' THUNDER VOLUME 2 NUMBER 2
Now available!
The second issue of the revived Blood 'n' Thunder opens with a special
section devoted to Jimmie Dale, alias the Gray Seal, Frank L. Packard's World
War I-vintage protagonist whose adventures in Street & Smith's People's
Magazine presaged the Depression-era hero-pulp phenomenon. Award-winning
writer, editor, documentarian, and pop-culture historian Don Hutchison makes
his first appearance in BnT with "Death to the Gray Seal!", an overview of
the legendary character. Then editor Ed Hulse offers "The Celluloid 'Seal',"
which recounts Jimmie Dale's brief but tumultuous history on film.
Novelist andpulp historian Will Murray is back with "The Spicy Mrs. Schwartz,"
another of his fascinating examples of literary detective work. This time
Will trains his attention on oneof Spicy Detective's most unlikely contributors.
BnT presentsa long-forgotten short story by Richard Sale, prolific fictioneer
who eventually became a Hollywood hyphenate (writer-producer-director) but
is best known for his detective yarns in theMunsey pulps. Sale's 1935 "Mellow
Drama" is a clever send-up of rough-paper magazines in general and hero pulps
in particular.
The making of Republic Pictures' episodic epic Spy Smasher (1942), based
on the popular Fawcett Publication comic book and still considered one of
the finest chapter plays ever, is fullydocumented in Ed Hulse's "Anatomy
of a Serial," which presents material gleaned from Republic studio files
and first-hand interviews with selected cast and crew members. This 8000-word
essay chronicles production from the 1941 licensing of screen rights to the
efforts of exhibitors to promote the serial while it was in release. Nothing
like it has ever been written bythe form's historians.
That relentless researcher of all things Old Time Radio, Karl Schadow, contributes
"Avenger Addendum," a brief article that supplements last issue's piece on
the 1941 series that adapted Street & Smith's character The Avenger.
The latest BnTalso includes reviews and reference material sure to be of
interest to pulp-fiction aficionados. And, asalways, the magazine is profusely
illustrated.

Black Flames & Gleaming Shadows
by Frank Coffman
This is Frank Coffman’s second large collection of speculative poetry.
As before, the verses herein cross the spectrum of Weird Horror, Science
Fiction, Fantasy and Adventure and include examples from sub-genres of these
modes ofthe high imagination.Following his chapbook, This Ae Nighte, Every
Nighte and Alle (2018) and his acclaimed magnum opus, The Coven’s Hornbook&
Other Poems (2019), this collection of 93 poems (six sequencesof poems: sonnet
sequences, a “megasonnet” sequence, a sequence inan Old Irish metric, etc)
continues in the same tradition.A formalist whose rhymed and metered verses
follow in the tradition of the exemplary work of the great early Weird Tales
poets such as Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, Donald
Wandrei, and Leah Bodine Drake, he is also a great experimenter with a broad
variety of exotic and cross-cultural forms and an innovative creator of several
new ones. His poetry has been published in several magazines, including Spectral
Realms, Weirdbook, TheAudient Void, Abyss & Apex, Gathering Storm, Phatasmagoria
and Lovecraftiana;and in anthologies such as Quoth the Raven, Caravan’s Awry,
and Soundsof the Night.

Bloodscreams #6: Random Violence
by Robert W. Walker
Archaeologist and vampire slayer, Dr. Abraham Stroud faces the greatest
challenge of his career — A battle in what appears an unending war fought
on the astral plane against an enemy of ancient origin. The Evil Order of
the Vadocq, an evil stretching across time and dimension, is a foe beyond
vampires, werewolves, zombies, and giant lampreys.
These new enemies are mind assassins making monsters of men. In the end,
no ugly killing act is at all random but premeditated by the Vadocq, who
have vowed to vanquish the Strouds and other key family lines.

Bloodscreams #7: Skitters
by Robert W. Walker
Spiders consume 400 million tons of prey every year — so when Abraham
Stroud, archaeologist and vampire slayer, unmasks a coven of ancient spider
men in the caves of northwest Georgia, his personal terror alert goes to
‘High’. Then forensic data suggests the spider-creatures are extraterrestrial
in nature.
Stroud’s investigation points to a predatory race seen in ancient Japan;
and found again in Egypt. Persistent as any arachnid, they have returned,
mimicking mankind while feeding on humans. If Stroud doesn’t annihilate this
flesh-crawling menace, the “Skitters” may become humanity’s exterminator.

CROOKED RIVER (Agent Pendergast Series (19)) - Now available!
by DouglasPreston & Lincoln Child
A STARTLING CRIME WITH DOZENS OF VICTIMS.
Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island,
Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide
and are washed up on the tropical beach--each one with a crudely severed
human foot inside.
A GHASTLY ENIGMA WITH NO APPARENT SOLUTION.
Called away from vacation elsewhere in the state, Agent Pendergast reluctantly
agrees to visit the crime scene--and, despite himself, is quickly drawn in
by the incomprehensible puzzle. An early pathology report only adds to the
mystery. With an ocean of possibilities confronting the investigation, no
one is sure what happened, why, or from where the feet originated. And they
desperately need to know: are the victims still alive?
A WORTHY CHALLENGE FOR A BRILLIANT MIND.
In short order, Pendergast finds himself facing the most complex and inexplicable
challenge of his career: a tangled thread of evidence that spans seas and
traverses continents, connected to one of the most baffling mysteries in
modern medical science. Through shocking twists andturns, all trails lead
back to a powerful adversary with a sadistic agenda and who--in a cruel irony--ultimately
sees in Pendergast the ideal subject for their malevolent research.

Edgar Rice Burroughs
Books
Oasis Family Media to Publish Audio Editions of
AllEdgar Rice Burroughs Novels
Publisher to bring 80-plus titles to audio, including Tarzan
andJohn Carter of Mars books
Coming Spring 2020!
Oasis Audio, a leading independent audiobook publisher, today announced
that they have obtained an exclusive master audiobook license with Edgar
Rice Burroughs, Inc., the company that manages the worldwide rights to the
creator of the iconic characters Tarzan®, John Carter of Mars®, Carson
of Venus® and many others.
The agreement between Oasis Family Media and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.,
is extensive and includes the more than 80 titles written by Burroughs himself—first
published in 1912 and all thoroughly edited for today’s readers. This will
be the first time the entire collection of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized
Library has been available on audio.
The deal also includesthe new Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe series of novels,
officially expanding upon Burroughs’ original canon; the existing catalog
of The Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs series; four authorized titles
from notable science fiction authors Fritz Leiber, Philip José Farmer
and John Eric Holmes;and a comprehensive Edgar Rice Burroughs biography.
“Reading Edgar Rice Burroughs as a teenager sparked my sense of wonder,”
said Oasis Audio publisher Steve Smith. “I couldn’t be more excited to bring
the full collection to audio for the first time ever. Many people have no
idea what Burroughs’ work has meant to modern culture. He pioneered the idea
of an interconnected literary universe. Early NASA scientists said their
curiosity to explore space stemmed from the Mars series. Ray Bradbury called
Burroughs ‘probably the most influential writer in the entire history of
the world.’We look forward to doing justice to these new editions.”
The first audiobooks are scheduled for publication this spring, beginning
with books 1–4 in the Tarzan series and the first title in the new Edgar
Rice Burroughs Universe series, Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds,
written by Matt Betts.
“In teaming up with Oasis Family Media for a complete audio library of all
our works, we have filled a major gap in our publishing program,” said James
Sullos, president of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. “It was very important that
we select a company that provides a high-quality product on a recurring basis.
We feel that Oasis Audio meets that standard in all respects, and we are
looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship. We believe our fans
will be as delighted as we are with this program when the audios become available.”

Along with some additional biographical material about Arnold, there is
also an afterword following the story, where wediscuss the end of the story,
and why webelieve the twist at the endmay be the first appearance of an ending
that, today, has been doneso many times, that it is considered the worst
of cliches.

Baroness Orczy wrote many different types ofstories during her career

James Rollins: THE LAST ODYSSEY: A Thriller (Sigma Force
Novels) - Coming March 20!
To save the world and our future, Sigma Force must embark on a dangerous
odyssey into an ancient past whose horrors are all too present in this page-turning
thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins that combines
cutting-edge science, historical mystery, mythology, and pulse-pounding action.
For eons, the city of Troy—whose legendary fall was detailed in Homer’s
Iliad—was believed to be myth, until archaeologists in the nineteenth century
uncovered its ancient walls buried beneath the sands. If Troy was real, how
much of Homer’s twin tales of gods and monsters, curses and miracles—The
Iliad and The Odyssey—could also be true and awaiting discovery?
In the frozen tundra of Greenland, a group of modern-day researchers stumble
on a shocking find: a medieval ship buried a half-mile below the ice. The
ship’s hold contains a collection of evenolder artifacts—tools of war—dating
back to the Bronze Age. Insidethe captain’s cabin is a magnificent treasure
that is as priceless asit is miraculous: a clockwork gold map imbedded with
an intricate silverastrolabe. The mechanism was crafted by a group of Muslim
inventors—the Banū Mūsā brothers—considered by many to be the Da Vincis of
the Arab world—brilliant scientists who inspired Leonardo’s own work.
Once activated, the moving map traces the path of Odysseus’s famous ship
as it sailed away from Troy. But the route detours as the map opens to reveal
a fiery river leading to a hidden realm underneath the Mediterranean Sea.
It is the subterranean world of Tartarus, the Greek name for Hell. In mythology,
Tartarus was where the wicked were punished and the monstrous Titans of old,
imprisoned.
When word of Tartarus spreads—and of the cache of miraculous weapons said
to be hidden there—tensions explode in this volatile region where Turks battle
Kurds, terrorists wage war, and civilians suffer untold horrors. The phantasmagoric
horrors found in Homer’s tales are all too real—and could be unleashed upon
the world. Whoever possesses them can use their awesome power to control
the future of humanity.
Now, Sigma Force must go where humans fear to tread. To prevent a tyrant
from igniting a global war, they must cross thevery gates of Hell.

Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime!
Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’s
masked nightmare!
“The Rights to Your Invention — or You Die!” That wasthe implacable demand!
A creation that could benefit…or cripplemankind and only man can keep it
from falling in the wrong hands!Follow the Phantom Detective on the perilous
trail of a fiend greedyfor power!
Only two authors’ names ever appeared on the covers of The Phantom Detective
Magazine as being responsible for the masked sleuth’s tales- G. Wayman Jones
and Robert Wallace. These two men never existed, but were house names concealing
the names of an actually extensive list of writers.
|
|
With so many authors responsible
for the adventures of The Phantom Detective, there are obviouslyhigh points
and not so high points throughout the series in termsof quality. A certain
number of traits, however, seem to run standardfor nearly all the entries
in the series. The plot moves quickly andusually efficiently, going from
intense action to actual mystery solvingto focusing on the intent of the
crooks and back again, the storiesoverall do not slow down enough, ensuring
the listener is engaged frombeginning to end. Another similarity is the willingness
of authors toput The Phantom Detective in situations that he may not survive.
Althoughhe is a master sleuth, he is also one that makes mistakes, encounters
obstacles, and often ends up in spots that end with him just barely escaping.
He isfallible, a man behind the mask, not some larger than life character
thatlisteners could never identify with. Granted, his pastime involves punchingcriminals
and fighting evil, but even in doing that, The Phantom Detectiveis much more
relatable than his Pulp peers.
Master of the World was originally published in the September 1935 issue
of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity
by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.

Radio Archives
G-8 and His Battle Aces #29 Audiobook
Skeletons of the Black Cross
by Robert J. Hogan
Read by Nick Santa Maria
Now available!
They called G-8 the Flying Spy. Historynever recorded his exploits—and
for good reason! No one would everbelieve World War I was that wild!
Sudden, hideous destruction loomed like some frightful monster in the skies,
wrought by what fiendish hand, the Master Spy could not tell because it struck
swiftly and silently, without so muchas a trace of its frightful source.
G-8 took up this challenge witha single thought in mind; that wherever the
hand of Herr Doktor Kruegershowed, Death must be matched with Death! Still
G-8 hit the sky lanesof Death — with a purpose. He would bring back the answer
or not returnat all.
|
|
Accompanied on most missions
by the two men making up the Battle Aces, G-8 relied on two men, bothpilots,
to fight alongside him and have his back, often nearly losingtheir own lives
in the process.
Bull Martin may not have been long on brains, but he had muscle. Even though
he was often at odds with Nippy, Bull only ever used his particular two fisted
skills when he or his companions were threatened and always to defend his
country. Bull also proved, though, to be rather superstitious. This comes
up often in the stories, but is exemplified best by the number of the plane
he flies 7.
Almost the opposite of Bull, as was sort of the pattern for sidekicks in
Pulp Fiction, Nippy Weston was small only in stature. A fair hand with fighting
himself, Nippy acted as mechanic, but also spent a fair amount of time antagonizing
Bull. Just as Bull proved his superstition by the numbering of his plane,
Nippy maintained he was in no way superstitious, proving it by numbering
his own plane 13.
Nick Santa Maria brings G-8, Nippy and Bull to thrilling life in their desperate
struggle to defeat a deadly nemesis unlike anything they have ever before
encountered in Skeletons of the Black Cross. Originally published in the
February 1936 issue of G-8 andHis Battle Aces magazine.
Nick DeGregorio composed the music for the G-8 and HisBattle Aces series
of audiobooks.

G-8 and his Battle Aces rode the nostalgia boom ten years after World War
I ended. These high-flying exploits were tall tales of a World War that might
have been, featuring monster bats, German zombies, wolf-men, harpies, Martians,
and even tentacled floating monsters. Most of these monstrosities were the
work of Germany’s seemingly endless supply of mad scientists, chief of whom
was G-8’s recurring Nemesis, Herr Doktor Krueger. G-8 battled Germany’s Halloween
shock troops for over a decade, not ceasing until the magazine folded in
the middle of World War II. G-8 and his Battle Aces return in vintage pulp
tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format.

Robert Lesser:
1924 - 2020
Robert Lesser passed away on March 1, 2020 due to natural causes
at the age of 96.
Lesser was a major champion and collector of Pulp Art.
Taken by the pulps as a youngster growing up in Brooklyn, NY, Lesser found
the sex and shock of these 10 cent magazines- the Pulp Art covers especially-to
be pulse quickening to the point that he wrote the book on the subject: Pulp
Art: Original Cover Paintings for the Great American Pulp Magazines. Lesser
amassed perhaps the most comprehensive collection of Pulp Art covers in the
world. Armed with aneye for the greatest works, Lesser sought out pieces
by the greats ofthe era-Norman Saunders, H.L. Parkhurst, and Rafael de Soto
to name afew, at a time when the works were considered worthless, even by
the artiststhemselves.
Lesser's prescience and dedication to the category ultimately caught on,
and a number of institutions launched shows around The Robert Lesser Collection,
including the Brooklyn Museum (2003), The Society of Illustrators (2012),
and The Union Club (2019). The 200 painting collection will reside with the
New Britain Museum of American Art.

As brilliant as Sherlock Holmes. As daring as James Bond. Sexton
Blake, the adventuring detective, is back! This first volume of a new series
reinstates one of literatures greatest detectives - back in print for the
first time in decades!
For nearly a century, Sexton Blake was the most written about character
in British fiction. He starred in approximately four thousand stories by
nearly two hundred authors. A cross between Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones,
he was a publishing phenomenon, read by young and old alike.
Paperback: 430 pages
Publisher: Rebellion
Product Dimensions: 5 x 8 inches
List Price: $11.99
A killer blend of James
Bond, Indiana Jones, and Sherlock Holmes (thenwrapped inside a riddle, wrapped
in an enigma), Blake— with his awesome bullet-proof Rolls-Royce and Moth
monoplane — is known for his epic adventures and daring exploits. Assisted
in all of this daring-do, of course, by his trusted side-kicks Tinker and
his remarkable hound Pedro, the detective has been adored by readers of all
ages.
After being largely forgotten for decades, this major new collection heralds
a triumphant return that not only celebrates Blake, but also serves as the
perfect introduction to the charismatic detective for a whole new generation
of readers. Featuring tales of derring-do, espionage and exploration, the
stories track Blake’s perilous adventures across Europe as he attempts to
solve a host of classic crimes; from an encounter with a duplicitous German
Kaiser to escaping a firing squad!
