| Barbarian Life: A Literary Biography of Conan the Barbarian(Volume Two) - Now available!
by Roy Thomas (Author), Bob McLain (Editor)
Know Again, O Reader...
In thousands of four-color panels for Marvel Comics, Roy Thomas told thetale of Robert E. Howard’s greatest creation, Conan the Barbarian. Now, inthis definitive biography and analysis, Roychronicles Conan’s comic-booklife, issue by issue, plot by plot, and artist by artist.
For ten years, from October 1970 when Roy and artist Barry Smith assembledthe first issue of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian,to October 1980 when Royand artist John Buscema completed their last issue together on the series,Thomas wrote of Conan's gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth—as wellas the wars, the wenches, and the wizardry that bedeviled the Cimmerian fromone issue to the next.
In this second of three volumes, Roy Thomas explains the creative processbehind nearly 50 issues (#52–#100) of Conan theBarbarian. Roy talks abouthow he plotted and scripted each issue, devised new adventures for Conan thatexpanded Howard's original storiesinto a world-spanning epic, and workedwith such Conan artists and inkersas John Buscema, Gil Kane, Ernie Chan, and George Roussos.
Whether you’re a Conan fan or a comics fan, you'll enjoy this in-depth lookat a Marvel comic-book classic.

| Blood 'N' Thunder/ Murania Press BLOOD 'N' THUNDER VOLUME 2 NUMBER 2
Now available!
The second issue of the revived Blood 'n' Thunder opens with a specialsection devoted to Jimmie Dale, alias the Gray Seal, Frank L. Packard's WorldWar I-vintage protagonist whose adventures in Street & Smith's People'sMagazine presaged the Depression-era hero-pulp phenomenon. Award-winningwriter, editor, documentarian, and pop-culture historian Don Hutchison makeshis first appearance in BnT with "Death to the Gray Seal!", an overview ofthe legendary character. Then editor Ed Hulse offers "The Celluloid 'Seal',"whichrecounts Jimmie Dale's brief but tumultuous history on film.
Novelist and pulp historian Will Murray is back with "The Spicy Mrs. Schwartz,"another of his fascinating examples of literary detective work. This timeWill trains his attention on one of Spicy Detective's most unlikely contributors.
BnT presents a long-forgotten short story by Richard Sale, prolific fictioneerwho eventually became a Hollywood hyphenate (writer-producer-director) butis best known for his detective yarns in the Munsey pulps. Sale's 1935 "MellowDrama" is a clever send-up of rough-paper magazines in general and hero pulpsin particular.
The making of Republic Pictures' episodic epic Spy Smasher (1942), basedon the popular Fawcett Publication comic book and still considered one ofthe finest chapter plays ever, is fully documented in Ed Hulse's "Anatomyof a Serial," which presentsmaterial gleaned from Republic studio files andfirst-hand interviews with selected cast and crew members. This 8000-wordessay chronicles production from the 1941 licensing of screen rights to theefforts of exhibitors to promote the serial while it was in release. Nothinglike it has ever been written bythe form's historians.
That relentless researcher of all things Old Time Radio, Karl Schadow, contributes"Avenger Addendum," a brief article that supplements last issue's piece onthe 1941 series that adapted Street & Smith's character The Avenger.
The latest BnT also includes reviews and reference material sure to be ofinterest to pulp-fiction aficionados. And, as always, the magazine is profuselyillustrated.

Walter Miller and AlleneRay co-starred in ten classic “cliffhangers” produced and released duringthe late silent era by Pathé, one of the pioneering motion-picturecompanies. They were an incredibly popular team whose chapter-play hits includedThe Green Archer (a 1925 adaptation of Edgar Wallace’s classic mystery novel)and The House Without a Key (the 1926 serial that introduced Charlie Chanto moviegoers). Together with chief director Spencer Bennet and favoritescenarist Frank Leon Smith, Miller and Ray temporarily restored luster toa film form that had become tarnished.
This monograph exhaustively covers the Miller-Ray phenomenon. Author EdHulse has seen all surviving footage from their chapter plays, andhis accountalso relies on private correspondence from Frank Leon Smith, several interviewswith Spencer Bennet, and careful analysis of survivingscripts from theirserials. The text is supplemented by dozens of rarephotos, including rarebehind-the-scenes candids.

Larry Kent, P.I. — the longest-runningseries detective — in two exciting hardboiled novels!
Cry Twice, Kitten!
Jacob Troy was an old man who had it all; a movie-star wife, a vast andthriving business empire—even a castle he’d bought in Germany and had transplantedbrick-by-brick onto some of Hollywood’s primest real estate. But he wantedmore. That’s why he had hired mobster Danny Hester to put the squeeze onnightclub owner Paul Huntsman.
Huntsman hired Larry Kent to find a connection between Troy and Hester thatwould stand up in a court of law. If he could expose Troy, then he couldruin him. Almost before Larrytook the case, however, things moved fast. Acase of kidnap, a sadisticbeating, a neat little frame-up and a grisly murder, just for starters. What should have been a straightforward assignment soonfound LarryKent fighting for his life.
Honey-Blonde Blues
Larry Kent’s old buddy Jim Calloway was murdered over a woman … so theysaid. But who was the woman? No one seemed to know—not even Jim’s killer.Larry suspected the woman was just a diversion. There was another reasonfor Jim’s death. And just maybe it had something to do with his job withthe Narcotics Bureau. Onlything was, Jim was a minor official at the Bureau,no one with anyclout, just a desk-jockey.
One thing for certain. There were people out there—important people—whowanted to bury the case. And if they couldn’t kill Larry to stop him investigating, then just maybe they could send him to Cuba in search of a missing man. Afterall, he’d be easier torub out in a foreign country …

New on Famous (and forgotten) Fiction!
December 2019
For your end of the year reading pleasure, wepresent to you "The Monster of Lake LaMetrie" by Wardon Allan Curtis,as it originally appeared in the September, 1899 issue of Pearson's Magazine(UK).
It's a fun story involving a dinosaur, possible hollow earth and the useof a machete as a surgical tool (?). The illustrations by StanleyL.Wood are included along with a brief introduction by Bob Gay.
November 2019
Presenting another author who has been too long neglected, we haveadded The Julius Long Collection and it includes not only a biographyof Long's life, but also his first published story, The Dead Man's Story.
Although Long ended his pulp career as a writer of detective fiction, hisfirst works were all in the horror genre and hold up quite well today. Hope you enjoy it.
September2019
We are happy to present a previously unreprinted story by H. F. Arnold, "The City of the Iron Cubes," as it apppearedinthe March and April, 1929 issues of Weird Tales, including the illustrationsby C. C. Senf.
Along with some additional biographical material about Arnold, there isalso an afterword following the story, where we discuss the end of the story, and why we believe the twistat the end may be the first appearance of anending that, today, has been done so many times, that it is considered theworst of cliches.
July 2019
Baroness Orczy wrote many different types of stories during her careerand "Young Muggins" shows yet another facet to her talents,as she weaves a tale of love, selfishness and self-sacrifice in rural England.
Our reprinting appears just as it did in the May, 1906 issue of The RoyalMagazine, including the illustrations by J. Barnard Davis. Introductionto the story is by Dan Neyer.
June 2019
This month we feature Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mummy tale, Lot No. 249, including the illustrations by WilliamThomasSmedley and an introduction by your humble scribes, Dan Neyer and BobGay.
We've also done some behind the scenes work tomake the site work better...dostop by and check us out.
May 2019
Edmond Hamilton returns to our pages with "The Man Who Evolved," direct from the pages of theApril,1931 issue of Wonder Stories, including the Frank R. Paul illustration. Intro by Bob Gay
Also, we found a 1953 comic book story where the plot was (*ahem*) "borrowed"from Hamilton's original and ourunknown scribe managed to condense the storydown to a mere 4 pages.
Read the original first, then "Evolution" which appears as it originally appearedinTomb of Terror #12, with the digital restoration included at no extra cost.
April 2019
We are very pleased to present The Neil R. Jones Collection, which starts with an 11,000+word biography of Jones that incorporates his words, newspaper articles andour research to create a long overdue portrait of the creator of ProfessorJameson. We have also located a nearly all of Jones' non-fiction writingsfrom various magazines and fanzines and have included them, along with 5,never before reprinted, stories that chart his early years as an author. Copiously illustrated throughout, we hope you enjoy it.

QUEENOF THE PULPS, the definitive biography of Daisy Bacon and the untold storyof LOVE STORY MAGAZINE!
Daisy Bacon, the opinionated, autocratic and complex editor of Love Story Magazine from 1928 to 1947, chosethe stories that would be read by hundreds of thousands of readers each week. The first weekly periodical devoted to romance fiction and the biggest-sellingpulp in the early days of the Great Depression, Love Story sparked a waveof imitators that dominated newsstands for more than twenty years.
Disparaged as "love pulp," the magazine actually championed the "moderngirl," bringing its heroines out of the shadows of Victorian poverty andinto the 20th century. Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime!Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’smasked nightmare!
The Phantom combats a human fiend who plays the game of life and deathwithmen as pawns in this exciting tale of a series of grim murders veiledin asinister cloak of mystery! In the never-ending war of the forces ofcrimeagainst civilization, it is the guardians of the law who always holdthe winninghand! Though the dread octopus of lawlessness grasps humanityin a strangle-hold,the courageous and fearless upholders of honesty anddecency are making greaterand greater progress in loosening its terribleclutches! Among the most formidableenemies of organized banditry is RichardCurtis Van Loan, the Phantom Detective— the world’s greatest sleuth andmaster of disguise and escape!
|
| Unlike the majority of hisfictional peers, The Phantom Detective did not engage a plethora of mad scientists, monsters, and supernatural forces bent on evil. Staying fairly true to hisdebut in The Emperor of Death, Richard Curtis Van Loan saw his mission astaking on criminals head on, but not the fantastic foes that Doc Savage,The Shadow and others faced. The PhantomDetective spent twenty years fightingcrime at its most basic, on the streetsand in the back alleys, on the docksand in skyscrapers riddled with corruption.Using skills he learned on hisown, Van Loan took on gangsters, murderers, and other vile types who soughtto rob common citizens of their money, theirsafety, their lives. In his entire170 issue run, The Phantom Detective onlyfaced one foe, Clifford Boniface, twice. While others were fighting bat creaturesand exotic diseases, The PhantomDetective was hell bent on keeping everydaycitizens alive.
‘Merchant of Murder’ was originally published in the October 1934 issueofThe Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensityby award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.

|
| By 1943, Richard Wentworthhad been operating as the Spiderfor nearly ten harrowing years. He had beenthrough everything a good pulphero could expect to face. Malevolent mastervillains. Sinister Asian worldconquerors, mad scientists. And of course sincethe Spider was a wanted criminal, endless police officials, uniformed cops, homicide detectives and other officersof the law had been pursuing him withsingle-minded fervor.
A mere mortal would have succumbed back in 1933. Not the indomitable RichardWentworth. He thrived on conditions of continuous peril. Yes, he did putdownhis mask and guns a time or two, vowing never to become the Spider again. But the call to battle always made his blood sing, and inevitably the Masterof Men returned to battle the underworld in another blazing exploit.

The first three jackets are all reconstructed using scans of theoriginal paintings for those covers.
THE WAR CHIEF alternate is based on art by noted western artist MaynardDixon and you can read more about it here.
Please take a moment to read the four-page article about the publishing of THEWARCHIEF and why it meant so much to Ed Burroughs. I think you’ll be interestedto find out that the book was one of the most well-researched novels he everwrote (besides I AM A BARBARIAN), and, considering its point of view andmany of the statements about white settlers, the US Army and the reasonsfor the Apache’s explicit savagery, certainly his most controversial.
