The Knight of Darkness demonstrates that “crime does not pay"
in classic pulp thrillers by Walter B. Gibson writing as "Maxwell Grant."
First, “The Voice” commands and murder is done—but will The Shadow's taunting

a baggage claim and a bank check are the enigmatic clues leading The Shadow
along the murderous “Alibi Trail." This classic collection showcases the

THE ART OF THE PULPS
by Doug Ellis, Ed Hulse, and Robert Weinberg
Foreword by F. Paul Wilson
Now available and highly recommended!
A team of experts in each of the
ten major Pulp genres, from action Pulps to spicy Pulps and more, chart for
the first time the complete history of Pulp magazines–the stories and their
writers, the graphics and their artists, and, of course, the publishers,
their market, and readers.
Each chapter in the book, which is illustrated with more than 400 examples
of the best Pulp graphics (many from the Editors’ collections—among the world’s
largest) is organized in a clear and accessible way, starting with an introductory
overview of the genre, followed by a selection of the best covers and interior
graphics, organized chronologically through the chapter. All images are
fully captioned (many are in essence "nutshell" histories in themselves).
Two special features in each chapter focus on topics of particular interest
(such as extended profiles of Daisy Bacon, Pulp author and editor of Love
Story, the hugely successful romance Pulp, and of Harry Steeger, co-founder
of Popular Publications in 1930 and originator of the "Shudder Pulp" genre).
With an overall Introduction on "The Birth of the Pulps" by Doug Ellis,
and with two additional chapters focusing on the great Pulp writers and the
great Pulp artists, The Art of the Pulps covers every aspect of this fascinating
genre; it is the first definitive visual history of the Pulps.
Hardcover, 240 pages, $49.99.
Co-editors
Doug Ellis and Ed Hulse have jointly signed a limited number of copies Murania

LUCIFER
by Maurice Magre
Adapted by Brian Stableford
Cover by Mike Hoffman
Maurice Magre (1877-1941) was one of the most far-ranging and
extravagant French writers of fantastic fiction in the first half of the
20th century, and perhaps the finest of them, because of the fertility and
versatility of his imagination and the manner and purpose for which he deployed
it.
This volume, the seventh of a series of twelve dedicated to Magre’s works,
contains the novel Lucifer and the novella The Night of Hashish and Opium
(both 1929). The former reads as a kind of confession exploring a demonic
possession resulting from a casually-made diabolical pact—which might or
might not be entirely subjective and psychological. The Church is at best
impotent, at worst in tacit alliance with the forces of evil and the narrator
is forced to find his own way out of his predicament—if he can.
As an account of metaphorical possession, it is detailed with a persuasive
conviction, if one regards its essential purpose as that of sowing a discomfort
in the reader’s mind similar to one experienced by the author.
In The Night of Hashish and Opium set in India, a young, lovely,
divorcée is caught in a magical trap by men who bet that they could
force the beautiful woman who once turned them down to dance in the magical
temple of Chillambaram.

20th century, and perhaps the finest of them, because of the fertility and
versatility of his imagination and the manner and purpose for which he deployed
it.
This volume is the eighth of a series of twelve dedicated to Magre’s
works. In The Blood of Toulouse (1931), Dalmas Rochemaure, son of a cathedral-builder,
embarks on the sacred mission to preserve Occitania from the armies of French
invaders hell-bent of exterminating the Cathar heresy.
The young equerry of the count of Toulouse faces unending combats and
carnage, saving the most precious treasure from the ashes of the tragic pyre
of Montsegur.
The Blood of Toulouse is dramatic and poignant, full of verve and intensity,
ending with a memorable flamboyant finish; it remains Magre’s finest achievement,
as well as his most celebrated.

The Bloodied Girl (1857) is the third volume in a series of four
that tells the story of the secret government’s spy network, the Secret Bureau,
that intercepts and opens all private mail.
In this tome, we discover how the downfall of Napoleon and the return
of the bourbon King Louis XVIII to power in 1815, plays havoc with the lives
of the saga’s numerous protagonists.
Gregorio Matiphous is trapped in a web of schemes of his own making.
The artisan of his downfall, the former bandit Rempailleux, succeeds in
replacing the last of the Hulet family which, for generations, has headed
the Secret Bureau.
And, in the midst of all of this, enters a former captain of Napoleon’s
Army, Commandant Lefebvre...
Charles Rabou (1803-1871) was one of the founders of the prestigious
Revue de Paris and a friend of Honoré de Balzac, whose unfinished
novels he completed after the latter’s death. He was also a master of the
roman noir (crime novel). The Secret Bureau is an important link between
the works of Jules Janin and Frédéric Soulié on the
one hand, and Paul Féval and Ponson du Terrail on the other.

Lovers of exotic adventure will welcome this new collection. Filled
with excitement and clever drama, these stories cover murder, intrigue, stolen
pearls, gun smuggling, mutiny and a fight for treasure!

Blood 'N' Thunder / Murania
Press
By Ed Hulse
(editor)
Now available!
The Shadow, The Spider, The Avenger,
Doc Savage, The Black Bat, The Phantom Detective — these swashbuckling heroes
of mid-20th-century pulp fiction all had one thing in common: They fought
crime from outside the law, unhindered by red tape and unmindful of such
legal niceties as due process. They fought with fists and guns, for the most
part hiding their true identities beneath outlandish costume and grotesque
disguises.
This collection of essays by distinguished pulp-fiction aficionados chronicles
the era of single-character magazines from offbeat angles and with keen insight.
The pieces herein analyze key stories and characters while offering rare,
behind-the-scenes glimpses of authors and editors at work, crafting and
polishing the pulp-paper fever dreams that enthralled millions of young readers
during the Great Depression, World War II, and beyond. Ed Hulse, editor
of Blood ‘n’ Thunder, the award-winning journal of adventure, mystery and
melodrama, has assembled these affectionate essays with loving care and
a discerning eye for the high-water marks in this phase of American popular
culture.
This third volume of Blood ‘n’ Thunder Presents, like its predecessors,
is profusely illustrated with pulp-magazine covers and original artwork.

Writing pulp fiction for a living was a tough grind, but one that
always attracted hopefuls. Dewy-eyed aspirants were willing to serve an apprenticeship
in the pulps, secure in the knowledge that raw talent and hard work would
carry them to inevitable success in the slicks. These neophytes, eager for
helpful tips and sage advice from the pulpwood Big Timers, poured over the
pages of trade journals such as Writer's Digest, Author & Journalist,
Writer's Review, and Writer's Markets and Methods.
Established pulp writers and editors who contributed to these publications
were surprisingly generous with advice and admonition both. Every now and
then their articles were vague or self-serving, but a large number offered
genuinely useful tips and outlined methods of working that are just as sound
today as they were in 1930 or 1940. The two dozen essays collected in THE
PENNY-A-WORD BRIGADE hold significant educational value for today's wannabe
writers.
Some of these trade-journal pieces saw revival in issues of Blood 'n'
Thunder. A few—specifically, those by hero-pulp legends Lester Dent, Norvell
Page, and Walter B. Gibson—have been reprinted before, but never have all
been included between two covers. In context, surrounded by similar articles
from peers, each represents a vital piece in the larger puzzle.
Straight how-to articles are mixed with market analyses and personal
reminiscences. In addition to Gibson & Company, you'll find contributions
from such legendary high-volume producers as Arthur J. Burks, H. Bedford-Jones,
and Erle Stanley Gardner along with many second-tier favorites, including
Nelson Bond, Frederick C. Davis, G. T. Fleming-Roberts, Frank Gruber, and
Henry Kuttner.
The blue-pencil boys also supplied guidance to followers of the writers'
magazines, and PENNY-A-WORD BRIGADE includes excellent essays by Adventure's
Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, Black Mask's Joseph T. "Cap" Shaw, and editorial
directors of the major pulp outfits: Rogers Terrill (Popular Publications),
Leo Margulies (the "Thrilling Group"), Robert A. W. Lowndes (Columbia/Double
Action/Blue Ribbon), Ralph Daigh (Fawcett Publications), and Robert O. Erisman
(Martin Goodman's "Red Circle" line). Agents Lurton Blassingame and August
Lenninger, frequent contributors to Writer's Digest, present market reports
that at the time of publication were considered valuable tools for newcomers
aiming to crack well-established sheets.
This book is an invaluable addition to any reference library with books
documenting the pulp era. It can be ordered at muraniapress.com. The
$24.95 cover price includes shipping to buyers in the U.S.

THE DEMON CROWN: A SIGMA FORCE NOVEL (Sigma
Force Novels) - Coming December 5!
by James Rollins
Off the coast of Brazil, a team of scientists discovers a horror like
no other, an island where all life has been eradicated, consumed and possessed
by a species beyond imagination. Before they can report their discovery,
a mysterious agency attacks the group, killing them all, save one, an entomologist,
an expert on venomous creatures, Professor Ken Matsui from Cornell University.
Strangest of all, this inexplicable threat traces back to a terrifying
secret buried a century ago beneath the National Mall: a cache of bones
preserved in amber. The artifact was hidden away by a cabal of scientists―led
by Alexander Graham Bell―to protect humankind. But they dared not destroy
it, for the object also holds an astonishing promise for the future: the
very secret of life after death.
Yet, nothing stays buried forever. An ancient horror―dormant in the marrow
of those preserved bones―is free once more, nursed and developed into a weapon
of incalculable strength and malignancy, ready to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting
world.
To stop its spread, Commander Grayson Pierce of Sigma Force must survive
a direct attack on the island of Maui. To be there first has always been
the core mission of Sigma Force, a covert team forged to be America's front
line against emerging threats. But this time, even Sigma may not be able to
decipher this deadly mystery, one that traces back to the founding of the
Smithsonian Institution.
With each new discovery, the menace they hunt is changing, growing, spreading―adapting
and surviving every attempt to stop it from reconquering a world it once
ruled. And each transformation makes it stronger . . . and smarter.
Running out of time and options, Commander Grayson Pierce will be forced
to make an impossible choice. To eradicate this extinction-level threat and
expose those involved, he will have to join forces with Sigma's greatest
enemy--the newly resurrected Guild―even it if means sacrificing one of his
own.

New on Famous (and forgotten) Fiction!
October 2017
Just in time for Halloween, we present what is probably the most
popular story to appear in Weird Tales, "The Night Wire" by H. F. Arnold.
Read it at night with the lights turned low...
September 2017
Since we are now in the season of Fall (and not wanting to miss
the chance for a pun), this month we present Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale
of a famous fall, The Adventure of the Final Problem, just as it appeared
in the December, 1993 issue of The Strand Magazine, including the illustrations
by Sidney Paget. An introduction by Dan Neyer is also included and he makes
some interesting points about our current perceptions of Professor Moriarty...
Also, if you are new to the site, you might wish to read Dan's biography of Doyle and possibly peruse some of
our other Doyle stories.
August 2017
We've added a new Author Collection to FAFF, and are pleased to
present The Edmond Hamilton Collection.
Like our other Author Collections, our initial offering begins with a
biography of Hamilton and we've also included Hamilton's very first story,
The Monster God of Mamurath.
In the months to come, we will be adding additional Hamilton stories
to the collection and will also be adding more early science fiction by
names both famous and forgotten.
July 2017
This month, we present "The Jameson Satellite," direct from the pages of the
July, 1931 issue of Amazing Stories, along with an introduction by Bob Gay.
Also, we have added another annotated gallery of Bob's Stuff, with even more wonderment from Bob's boxes
and shelves.
June 2017
Back after a short hiatus (insert your favorite quote about life here)
we present the fourth, and final story of Doyle's Tales of the High Seas, "The Striped Chest."
Dan Neyer introduces the story and also addresses the unknowns that surround
the tale, as Captain Sharkey is nowhere to be found in the narrative.
All of Doyle's text is there, along with the illustrations by Warwick
Goble, just as they appeared in the July 1897 issue of Pearson’s Magazine
(UK).
April 2017
This month we present the final tale of Captain Sharkey, "The Voyage of Copley Banks," just as it appeared in
the May, 1897 issue of Pearson's Magazine (UK), including the illustrations
by Warwick Goble. Dan Neyer adds a short introduction.
And, just for the completists out there: We do realize that there is
a 4th Sharkey tale, but we consider it apocryphal and its true origins are
unknown.
March 2017
Captain Sharkey returns in the second of Arthur Conan Doyle's
Tales of the High Seas in a tale entitled, "The Two Barques," just as it appeared in the March,
1897 issue of Pearson's Magazine, including the illustrations by Warwick
Goble.
Dan Neyer's introduction is also included as a more modern addition.
February 2017
Pirates...Tall sailing ships...the High Seas...and the villainous
buccaneer, Captain Sharkey...all these, and more, are part of the Arthur
Conan Doyle series, Tales of the High Seas.
Starting this month, we begin the series with "The Governor of St. Kitts," just as it appeared in the
January, 1897 issue of the British version of Pearson's Magazine, including
the illustrations by Warwick Goble.
Dan Neyer provides the introduction to the story and the series.
January 2017
Concluding our reprinting of the first series of Father Brown
stories, we present “The Sign of the Broken Sword” including all the George
Gibbs illustrations and an introduction by Dan Neyer.
Next month, prepare to hoist the jib and steer for clear water!

Hard Case Crime
Coming soon!
November 2017
TURN ON THE HEAT
Erle Stanley Gardner
Cover art by Laurel Blechman, Robert Maguire
Erle Stanley Gardner was not just the creator of PERRY MASON—at
the time of his death, he was the best-selling American author of all time,
with hundreds of millions of books in print. Among those books were the
29 cases of the brash, irresistible detective team of Bertha Cool and Donald
Lam. Last year, Hard Case Crime brought out the first new Cool and Lam novel
in decades, THE KNIFE SLIPPED, lost for 77 years after Gardner’s publisher
refused it. Now, we’re bringing you the book Gardner wrote to replace it,
often considered the best in the series: TURN ON THE HEAT.
Hired by a mysterious "Mr. Smith" to find a woman who vanished 21 years
earlier, Donald Lam finds himself facing a sadistic cop, a desperate showgirl,
a duplicitous client, and one very dogged (and beautiful) newspaper reporter—while
Bertha Cool’s attempts to cut herself in on this lucrative opportunity land
them both hip-deep in murder...
First appearance in bookstores in half a century!
Erle Stanley Gardner remains one of the most popular American authors
of all time
Features a new cover painting by Laurel Blechman, working from reference
photos shot by the legendary pulp illustrator Robert Maguire.

Popular
Publications Pulp Heroes Return In New Wild Adventures!
The Spider!, G-8, and Operator #5
in an epic crossover event!
Coming in 2018!
Will Murray has announced that an agreement
has been reached with Argosy Communications. licensing the world- famous
Popular Publications pulp heroes to appear in a new series of authorized
novels bearing the Wild Adventures banner. Two distinct series will
join the growing Wild Adventures lineup, which includes Doc Savage, The
Shadow, Tarzan of the Apes and King Kong. All novels will be written by Will
Murray.
Slated for 2018, the first release will be an epic crossover featuring
The Spider, James Christopher—America's Secret Agent, better known as Operator
5––and G-8, the legendary Flying Spy, entitled The Spider: Doom Legion. When
a strange meteor impacts Central Park, its emanations transform ordinary
citizens into mindless zombies whose burning eyes emit devastatingly destructive
rays. Richard Wentworth dons the mantle of The Spider—Nemesis of Evil—to once
again protect the city he loves. This brings him into conflict with Secret
Service Operator 5 and G-8, now with military intelligence.
Looming over Manhattan is a villain from the past. Tall, sinister, his
true identity unknown, with a seething wrath going back years, he has sworn
to kill one of the three crimefighters battling the Meteor Men. But who
is his target: The Spider, Operator 5, or, G-8? The answer to that mystery
will only be revealed in the pages of The Spider: Doom Legion….
Next, The Spider: Fury in Steel, in which a master villain attired in
steel-clad armor returns. This time, the plundering fiend has built an even
more formidable battle suit—and he is not alone.
The first Wild Adventure of James Christopher, Operator 5, is scheduled
to guest star the mysterious counterspy named Red Finger. Don't be surprised
if other heroes blaze their way through this Wild Adventures epic!
Each of these Wild Adventures will be released in trade paperback, ebook,
and hardcover formats. Every hardcover will feature a bonus novelette written
by Will Murray.
For The Spider: Doom Legion hardcover, The Secret 6 will be on hand to
combat the onslaught of meteor-maddened zombies terrorizing Long Island
in their first new exploit in over 80 years.
I’ve been a fan of The Spider since 1969, especially of those novels
written by the great Norvell W. Page. In recent years, I’ve been fortunate
to have written authorized Spider short stories. Writing a full-blown high-octane
Spider novel has been one of my secret ambitions. To revive the legendary
series, especially with a major team-up, is beyond my wildest dreams. But
here we are. Buckle up, the Wild Adventures is about to take on new meaning….
The Wild Adventures are released through Altus Press.

BLACK WINGS VI
Edited by S. T. Joshi
Coming in November!
SYNOPSIS
This sixth volume of S. T. Joshi’s acclaimed Black Wings series demonstrates
as never before how infinitely malleable are H. P. Lovecraft’s weird conceptions.
The twenty-two stories and poems in this book run the gamut of modes and
genres, but each of them is fueled by elements large and small drawn from
Lovecraft’s inexhaustibly rich corpus of writing.
Cosmicism is central to Lovecraft’s imaginative vision, and it oftentimes
is manifested in tales of archaeological horror. In this volume, stories
by Ann K. Schwader, Lynne Jamneck, Don Webb, and Stephen Woodworth treat this
motif in varying and distinctive ways. Lovecraft’s work is also infused with
a profound sense of place, as he himself was attached to the familiar locales
of his native New England but also travelled widely in search of new vistas
to stimulate his imagination. Here, stories by Tom Lynch, Aaron Bittner,
W. H. Pugmire, and Darrell Schweitzer summon up the landscapes of diverse
realms in America to tease out the horrors embedded in them.
Alien creatures are featured in many of Lovecraft’s greatest
tales. In this volume, William F. Nolan, Nancy Kilpatrick, Steve Rasnic
Tem, Jonathan Thomas, and Jason V Brock summon up multiform monsters inspired
by Lovecraft’s notions of hybridism and alien incursion. The forbidden book
theme is deftly handled by Caitlín R. Kiernan, and the notion of
other worlds lying just around the corner from our own is the subject of
stories by Donald Tyson and Mark Howard Jones. Finally, David Hambling cleverly
adapts Lovecraftian concepts to the locked-room detective story.
In commemorating the incredible efflorescence of weird poetry in our
time, this book presents poems by four leading contemporary poets—Ashley
Dioses, K. A. Opperman, Adam Bolivar, and D. L. Myers. Each of their works
fuses skilful use of rhyme and metre with compact evocations of Lovecraftian
themes. H. P. Lovecraft’s work is likely to continue inspiring writers for
many generations, and this volume presents a vivid snapshot of what can
be said in this idiom by sensitive and talented authors.

3 classic titles available together—for the first time—in high-quality,
cover-to-cover digital editions.
Also available at the Pulp Magazines Project, new issues of the iconic
“weird menace” pulp, Dime Mystery Magazine (Apr. 1938 and Sept. 1946); Adventure
(Jul. 1, 1928; feat. Walt Coburn’s “The Man Who Hated Himself”); Western
Story (Jul. 27, 1940); Detective Story (May 1938; feat. Zorro-creator Johnston
McCulley’s “Thubway Tham’s Thothial Thecurity”); and histories of both The
Black Mask (E.R. Hagemann; UCLA) and Dime Mystery Magazine (Emily Sisler;
University of West Florida).
The Pulp Magazines Project
is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation
of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic
forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information
on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies
of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.
At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In
summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation
pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will
expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added.
Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923
titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from
1896 to 1946.
The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors,
fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities
for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We
will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote
new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans
and collectors beyond the college and university.

The Spider #50 Audiobook
Master of the Flaming Horde
by Norvell W. Page writing as Grant Stockbridge
Read by Nick Santa Maria
Now available!
Over Manhattan’s dizzy towers fell
that insidious, invisible menace — an unseen cloud of death that first transformed
the entire metropolis into a laughing, drunken riot and then blasted it to
bits! Who was the evil Master of these Flame Men, who had found a real way
to amass millions by gutting New York with fire? In defense of those reeling,
giggling victims, trapped in their awesome death-spree, Richard Wentworth,
in the Spider’s weird robes, rose from the charred embers — to fight his
greatest battle against an arson assassin no one had ever seen — for a doomed
people so blind-drunk they could not see!
|
|
A deeply religious man,
author Norvell W. Page began infusing latter Spider stories with undercurrents
of a strange spiritual quest. A Tibetan monk became a recurring character,
issuing prophecies. Psychic phenomenon became a constant theme. Jesus was
often evoked.
The Spider did not speak lightly of evil. He was too gentle, too tender
a lover, to blot the glamorous night with useless vaporings. He was too courageous
to take fright from vague notions. But through years of struggle and danger—not
alone from the Underworld but also from the police who considered his brand-marked
executions of criminals only murder—he had developed an uncanny feeling
like the sixth sense of bats. Flying in the dark, scarcely seeing, an impact
of air waves which warning the animal of obstacles in its path. So something—thought
waves?—warned the Spider of danger.
Nick Santa Maria takes on the dual persona of Richard Wentworth and his
arachnid alter-ego for this nail-biting audio rendition of Master of the
Flaming Horde. Originally published in The Spider magazine, November, 1937.

The first reports were incredible. Montezuma the Third, Emperor
of the new born Aztec Empire, was slaughtering American troops with a deadly,
new weapon… sacrificing captives to his ancient gods… America seemed condemned
to degrading slavery. Operator #5, Ace of the Secret Service, fought against
overwhelming odds. And while the gods of a long-dead civilization revel in
carnage, the very existence of the white race in America is apparently doomed…!
|
|
They called James Christopher
Operator #5—undercover agent, patriotic protector of America’s sacred shores.
His job is to root out subversive elements and stand as the first line of
defense against foreign invasions from all quarters. Aided by street-smart
Tim Donovan and newspaperwoman Diane Elliott, Jimmy Christopher was the James
Bond of the 1930s! But can even these resourceful comrades hold the line
when the world is filled with ambitious dictators bent on conquering America?
After two years, Frederick C. Davis grew tired of saving the United States
through his surrogate hero, and bowed out. His editors required that he write
under the house name of Curtis Steele, so readers didn’t notice when Emile
C. Tepperman and then Wayne Rogers took over the series. Tepperman became
famous for breaking the monthly menace format, and launching a continuing
serial revolving around the Purple Invasion, wherein a Hitlerian Axis of
European powers actually succeeds to conquering America, forcing Jimmy Christopher
and his courageous crew into the roles of ragged guerrillas desperately battling
to reclaim the nation, state by state. Fans have dubbed this thirteen-part
saga, “The War and Peace of the pulps.”
Into this unprecedented crisis plunged Jimmy Christopher. Only one man,
but a man who embodied the American spirit — and stands prepared to perish
to protect his country.
Raiders of the Red Death is read with stirring intensity by Milton Bagby.
Originally published in the December, 1935 issue of Operator #5 magazine.
Performed by 2017 Audie Awards winner, voice actor Milton Bagby.

mad scientists. The true identity of Secret Agent X was never revealed.
He used his mastery of disguise to work undercover for the U.S. government.
With his aide, newspaper reporter Betty Dale, and his secretive government
handler K-9, he battled weird and fantastical threats to America for forty-one
amazing issues. Secret Agent X returns in these vintage pulp tales, reissued

The Corpse Cavalcade by G.T. Fleming-Roberts writing as Brant House
Seven corpse-faced denizens of doom, swept down on the Suburban Trust.

gruesome gibbet, where the law and the lawless matched murder for his life.
The Murder Race by Edward Parrish Ware

Recoverings
These new dust-jackets use scans of the original cover paintings
by J. Allen St. John and Studley O. Burroughs, producing the extremely sharp
detail and rich color that my dust-jackets are known for.
Click on the image to the right and see for yourself.
APACHE DEVIL was the last cover that Studley O. Burroughs did for ERB,
Inc. and CITY OF GOLD was the first that J. Allen St. John did, marking
a return of the illustrator to his favorite and most well-known subjects.
Studley originally had the CITY OF GOLD assignment in the fall of 1932,
but his personal problems got the better of him and he ended up way behind
schedule.
Burroughs had C.R. Rothmund, his secretary, write to St. John as early
as February of that year to ask him if he could reduce his prices for artwork,
which he had quoted teh previous February, to match their "budget allowance"
in the event that "the artist who is doing the work at present" would not
be able to deliver on time. St. John agreed to a 37% decrease and ERB, Inc.
put him off until it became clear that Studley would miss his deadline. Read
more about this on The Back Flap Blog soon to come…
