We were alone, the tiger and I. It seemed to me that its green
phosphorescent eye was a lamp that illuminated not only the clearing, but
also the infinite depths of my soul.
Maurice Magre (1877-1941) was one of the most far-ranging and extravagant
French writers of fantastic fiction in the first half of the 20th century,
and perhaps the finest of them, because of the fertility and versatility
of his imagination and the manner and purpose for which he deployed it.
This volume, the fourth of a series of twelve dedicated to Magre’s works,
offers the novella The Story of Confucius and the novel The Mystery of the
Tiger (both 1927).
The former is a clever exercise in deadly serious comedy, which details
the rise and fall of the famous Chinese philosopher. In the latter, an obsessed
zoo-keeper and animal tamer goes into the Indonesian jungle to experience
a mystic transformation that highlights the relationship between humans and
animals, and between humans and their own animality.
The Mystery of the Tiger offers one of the most obvious examples of Magre’s
stubborn defiance of convention. As its protagonist gradually slides from
unrepentant unpleasantness into a kind of remorseful divine madness, it shows
itself for the truly remarkable work it is.
Contents:
Le Roman de Confucius [The Story of Confucius, 1927]
Le Mystère du tigre [The Mystery of the Tiger, 1927]
Introduction, Afterword and Notes by Brian Stableford.

Suddenly, he seized Rachel by the front of her dress and shouted
in her face: “You’re going to be mine right away. I didn’t have your mother,
but I’ll have you in spite of you, here, on the ground.”
Maurice Magre (1877-1941) was one of the most far-ranging and extravagant
French writers of fantastic fiction in the first half of the 20th century,
and perhaps the finest of them, because of the fertility and versatility
of his imagination and the manner and purpose for which he deployed it.
This volume, the sixth of a series of twelve dedicated to Magre’s works,
offers a collection of prose poems entitled Lotus Blossoms (1926) and the
novel The Poison of Goa (1928). In it, the unfortunate Rachel, who is in
desperate straits and has to undergo a terrifying ordeal, realizes that she
has just found an unexpected opportunity to avenge the death of her mother
and brutal torture of her father during a pogrom.
The action unfolds in the mid-19th century in the decadent Portuguese colony
of Goa in India. The tense and dramatic plot, the graphic images of the city,
as it is gradually consumed by the march of time, make the novel truly remarkable
in both strength and artistry.

The screams behind the door became agonizing. The men felt a grisly

to Japan. The Atomos Organization intends to strike the American base still
on the island. They approach Richard Tardif, a young American tempted by

PATHS OF FIRE
by Albert Richard Wetjen, Tom Roberts (Introduction)
Now available!
Lovers of exotic adventure will welcome this new collection. Filled
with excitement and clever drama, these stories cover murder, intrigue, stolen
pearls, gun smuggling, mutiny and a fight for treasure!
Albert Richard Wetjen has been compared to John Masefield, while the O.
Henry Awards said “he is in direct line of succession to Joseph Conrad.”
As a writer of sea stories, Wetjen was equally adept at penning fiction for
the Saturday Evening Post, Collier’s and Good Housekeeping, while also catering
to readers in Blue Book, Adventure and Action Stories. Wetjen left home at
age thirteen for a life at sea, carrying on the traditions of his sailing
forefathers.
These stories vividly display his intimate knowledge of the habits of sailors.
But this collection is more than just a chronicle of man’s struggle against
the relentless sea. Grim humor, pathos and tragedy are skillfully blended
to make Paths of Fire entertaining from cover to cover. With a biographical
introduction by Tom Roberts.

Blood 'N' Thunder / Murania
Press
By Ed Hulse
(editor)
Now available!
The Shadow, The Spider, The Avenger,
Doc Savage, The Black Bat, The Phantom Detective — these swashbuckling heroes
of mid-20th-century pulp fiction all had one thing in common: They fought
crime from outside the law, unhindered by red tape and unmindful of such
legal niceties as due process. They fought with fists and guns, for the most
part hiding their true identities beneath outlandish costume and grotesque
disguises.
This collection of essays by distinguished pulp-fiction aficionados chronicles
the era of single-character magazines from offbeat angles and with keen insight.
The pieces herein analyze key stories and characters while offering rare,
behind-the-scenes glimpses of authors and editors at work, crafting and polishing
the pulp-paper fever dreams that enthralled millions of young readers during
the Great Depression, World War II, and beyond. Ed Hulse, editor of Blood
‘n’ Thunder, the award-winning journal of adventure, mystery and melodrama,
has assembled these affectionate essays with loving care and a discerning
eye for the high-water marks in this phase of American popular culture.
This third volume of Blood ‘n’ Thunder Presents, like its predecessors,
is profusely illustrated with pulp-magazine covers and original artwork.

Writing pulp fiction for a living was a tough grind, but one that
always attracted hopefuls. Dewy-eyed aspirants were willing to serve an apprenticeship
in the pulps, secure in the knowledge that raw talent and hard work would
carry them to inevitable success in the slicks. These neophytes, eager for
helpful tips and sage advice from the pulpwood Big Timers, poured over the
pages of trade journals such as Writer's Digest, Author & Journalist,
Writer's Review, and Writer's Markets and Methods.
Established pulp writers and editors who contributed to these publications
were surprisingly generous with advice and admonition both. Every now and
then their articles were vague or self-serving, but a large number offered
genuinely useful tips and outlined methods of working that are just as sound
today as they were in 1930 or 1940. The two dozen essays collected in THE
PENNY-A-WORD BRIGADE hold significant educational value for today's wannabe
writers.
Some of these trade-journal pieces saw revival in issues of Blood 'n' Thunder.
A few—specifically, those by hero-pulp legends Lester Dent, Norvell Page,
and Walter B. Gibson—have been reprinted before, but never have all been
included between two covers. In context, surrounded by similar articles from
peers, each represents a vital piece in the larger puzzle.
Straight how-to articles are mixed with market analyses and personal reminiscences.
In addition to Gibson & Company, you'll find contributions from such
legendary high-volume producers as Arthur J. Burks, H. Bedford-Jones, and
Erle Stanley Gardner along with many second-tier favorites, including Nelson
Bond, Frederick C. Davis, G. T. Fleming-Roberts, Frank Gruber, and Henry
Kuttner.
The blue-pencil boys also supplied guidance to followers of the writers'
magazines, and PENNY-A-WORD BRIGADE includes excellent essays by Adventure's
Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, Black Mask's Joseph T. "Cap" Shaw, and editorial
directors of the major pulp outfits: Rogers Terrill (Popular Publications),
Leo Margulies (the "Thrilling Group"), Robert A. W. Lowndes (Columbia/Double
Action/Blue Ribbon), Ralph Daigh (Fawcett Publications), and Robert O. Erisman
(Martin Goodman's "Red Circle" line). Agents Lurton Blassingame and August
Lenninger, frequent contributors to Writer's Digest, present market reports
that at the time of publication were considered valuable tools for newcomers
aiming to crack well-established sheets.
This book is an invaluable addition to any reference library with books
documenting the pulp era. It can be ordered at muraniapress.com. The
$24.95 cover price includes shipping to buyers in the U.S.

BLOOD 'N'
THUNDER'S CLIFFHANGER CLASSICS VOLUME 2
Now shipping!
For nearly 50 years the motion-picture
chapter play was a vibrant part of our country’s pop-culture scene. Following
their favorite serials turned moviegoing into a weekly habit for millions
of Americans. During the silent-film era, episodic thrillers were marketed
to adults and children alike, but their emphasis on base melodrama and contrived
thrills appealed more to kids. Those youthful habitués of Saturday
matinees faithfully followed serials and retained fond memories of them.
Subsequent generations discovered cliffhanger classics via later broadcasts
on TV and reissues in collectable home-video formats.
This sequel to 2012's well-received Blood 'n' Thunder's Cliffhanger
Classics offers history and analysis of such popular and influential silent
serials as The Perils of Pauline (1914), The Million Dollar Mystery (1914),
The Diamond from the Sky (1915), The Riddle Rider (1924), and the four 1914-17
chapter plays of Francis Ford and Grace Cunard. Notable talkie-era serials
covered at length include Tarzan the Fearless (1933), The Return of Chandu
(1934), The Lost City (1935), Radio Patrol (1937), Red Barry (1938), The
Spider's Web (1938, and its 1941 sequel The Spider Returns), Hawk of the
Wilderness (1938), Adventures of Red Ryder (1940), and Secret Service in
Darkest Africa (1943).
A special essay titled "Anatomy of a Serial," taking an approach
not previously attempted by any chapter-play historian, chronicles the making
of fan favorite Spy Smasher (1942) from the licensing of the character rights
in June 1941 straight through to the film's national release in April 1942.
All aspects of the production are detailed with facts and figures, as well
as the recollections of director William Witney, star Kane Richmond, supporting
player Tris Coffin, and stunt ramrod Dave Sharpe.
The essays in Cliffhanger Classics are not the typical puff pieces
generally found in books on this subject. Each article has been carefully
researched and supplemented with first-hand recollections of people who worked
in the serials being examined, including leading men Buster Crabbe, Kane
Richmond, Herman Brix, and Rod Cameron; leading ladies Jacqueline Wells,
Iris Meredith, Kay Hughes, Vivian Coe; veteran serial writer Barry Shipman;
stuntmen Dave Sharpe and Tom Steele; and directors Ford Beebe and William
Witney. Their input makes this second volume of Cliffhanger Classics a valuable
addition to the historical record, as well as an entertaining read.
The book is profusely illustrated with more than 60 pages of rare
stills, posters, and lobby cards from the serials under examination.
Purchase price includes shipping to domestic U.S. buyers only; international
customers must inquire for shipping rates.

IN THE REALMS OF MYSTERY AND WONDER
by Clark Ashton Smith
Now available to order!
For many years, the artwork of
Clark Ashton Smith was a mere rumor to most of those who read his stories
and poems. Like many of his current admirers, this book’s editor first became
acquainted with the artwork of Clark Ashton Smith through the tantalizing
references that his correspondent and friend H.P. Lovecraft scattered throughout
his stories like malignant Easter eggs. Photographs of some of his carvings
had graced the dustjackets of Arkham House books, but these were themselves
rarities and only served to tantalize the reader further.
At long last the veil has been drawn back. In the Realms of Mystery and
Wonder presents, for the first time, over two hundred of Smith’s sculptures,
paintings and drawings in all their wonder. Included are paintings that he
did for his well-known poem “The Hashish-Eater,” as well as drawings that
he did to illustrate Lovecraft’s story “The Lurking Fear” and his own stories
in Weird Tales.
Also included are all of Smith’s prose poems, including several that have
not been collected, as well as memoirs and appreciations by Donald Sidney-Fryer,
Fritz Leiber, Eric Barker, and many of Smith’s friends and fellow writers.
This is a large book, oversized at 7 × 10 inches. Table of Contents
is shown at the right.

Crypt of Cthulhu No. 108, Hallowmas 2017 - Now available!
Cover by Eckhardt after Wilson
The Lovecraft Movement has recently mutated into a frightful caricature
of itself. One thinks of the insidious influence of the alien Colour on the
Nahum Gardner farmstead. It is part of the destructive (and highly annoying)
politicization of everything today. If, like me, the Hierophant of the Horde,
you are pretty sick of this strife, what say we set aside our politics for
the nonce and just get back to the glory days of Lovecraft fandom and scholarship?
And the best way to do that would of course be to revive Crypt of Cthulhu!
So we did! We have hit the ground running, offering great articles, poetry,
and reviews by Will Murray, Don Burleson, S.T. Joshi, Scott Connors, Sam
Gafford, Ann K. Schwaeder and others. And this is just the beginning! So
come on in and join in the gibbering!
Contents:
Disturbing and Debatable Editorial Shards
Deconstructing Nug and Yeb by Will Murray

THE DEMON CROWN: A SIGMA FORCE NOVEL (Sigma Force
Novels) - Coming December 5!
by James Rollins
Off the coast of Brazil, a team of scientists discovers a horror like no
other, an island where all life has been eradicated, consumed and possessed
by a species beyond imagination. Before they can report their discovery,
a mysterious agency attacks the group, killing them all, save one, an entomologist,
an expert on venomous creatures, Professor Ken Matsui from Cornell University.
Strangest of all, this inexplicable threat traces back to a terrifying secret
buried a century ago beneath the National Mall: a cache of bones preserved
in amber. The artifact was hidden away by a cabal of scientists―led by Alexander
Graham Bell―to protect humankind. But they dared not destroy it, for the
object also holds an astonishing promise for the future: the very secret
of life after death.
Yet, nothing stays buried forever. An ancient horror―dormant in the marrow
of those preserved bones―is free once more, nursed and developed into a weapon
of incalculable strength and malignancy, ready to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting
world.
To stop its spread, Commander Grayson Pierce of Sigma Force must survive
a direct attack on the island of Maui. To be there first has always been
the core mission of Sigma Force, a covert team forged to be America's front
line against emerging threats. But this time, even Sigma may not be able
to decipher this deadly mystery, one that traces back to the founding of
the Smithsonian Institution.
With each new discovery, the menace they hunt is changing, growing, spreading―adapting
and surviving every attempt to stop it from reconquering a world it once
ruled. And each transformation makes it stronger . . . and smarter.
Running out of time and options, Commander Grayson Pierce will be forced
to make an impossible choice. To eradicate this extinction-level threat and
expose those involved, he will have to join forces with Sigma's greatest
enemy--the newly resurrected Guild―even it if means sacrificing one of his
own.
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: William Morrow
Product Dimensions: 6 x 1.4 x 9 inches

Martin Powell is currently writing

also his favorite Doc Savage adventure.
This gig is especially thrilling to Martin because it's specifically crafted

New on Famous (and forgotten) Fiction!
September 2017
Since we are now in the season of Fall (and not wanting to miss the
chance for a pun), this month we present Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's tale of
a famous fall, The Adventure of the Final Problem, just as it appeared
in the December, 1993 issue of The Strand Magazine, including the illustrations
by Sidney Paget. An introduction by Dan Neyer is also included and he makes
some interesting points about our current perceptions of Professor Moriarty...
Also, if you are new to the site, you might wish to read Dan's biography of Doyle and possibly peruse some of
our other Doyle stories.
August 2017
We've added a new Author Collection to FAFF, and are pleased to present
The Edmond Hamilton Collection.
Like our other Author Collections, our initial offering begins with a biography
of Hamilton and we've also included Hamilton's very first story, The Monster God of Mamurath.
In the months to come, we will be adding additional Hamilton stories to
the collection and will also be adding more early science fiction by names
both famous and forgotten.
July 2017
This month, we present "The Jameson Satellite," direct from the pages of the
July, 1931 issue of Amazing Stories, along with an introduction by Bob Gay.
Also, we have added another annotated gallery of Bob's Stuff, with even more wonderment from Bob's boxes
and shelves.
June 2017
Back after a short hiatus (insert your favorite quote about life here) we
present the fourth, and final story of Doyle's Tales of the High Seas, "The Striped Chest."
Dan Neyer introduces the story and also addresses the unknowns that surround
the tale, as Captain Sharkey is nowhere to be found in the narrative.
All of Doyle's text is there, along with the illustrations by Warwick Goble,
just as they appeared in the July 1897 issue of Pearson’s Magazine (UK).
April 2017
This month we present the final tale of Captain Sharkey, "The Voyage of Copley Banks," just as it appeared in
the May, 1897 issue of Pearson's Magazine (UK), including the illustrations
by Warwick Goble. Dan Neyer adds a short introduction.
And, just for the completists out there: We do realize that there is a 4th
Sharkey tale, but we consider it apocryphal and its true origins are unknown.
March 2017
Captain Sharkey returns in the second of Arthur Conan Doyle's Tales
of the High Seas in a tale entitled, "The Two Barques," just as it appeared in the March,
1897 issue of Pearson's Magazine, including the illustrations by Warwick
Goble.
Dan Neyer's introduction is also included as a more modern addition.
February 2017
Pirates...Tall sailing ships...the High Seas...and the villainous
buccaneer, Captain Sharkey...all these, and more, are part of the Arthur
Conan Doyle series, Tales of the High Seas.
Starting this month, we begin the series with "The Governor of St. Kitts," just as it appeared in
the January, 1897 issue of the British version of Pearson's Magazine, including
the illustrations by Warwick Goble.
Dan Neyer provides the introduction to the story and the series.
January 2017
Concluding our reprinting of the first series of Father Brown stories,
we present “The Sign of the Broken Sword” including all the George
Gibbs illustrations and an introduction by Dan Neyer.
Next month, prepare to hoist the jib and steer for clear water!

QUARRY'S CLIMAX
Max Allan Collins
Cover art by Robert McGinnis
Memphis, 1975. "Raunchy" doesn’t begin to describe Max Climer’s magazine,
Climax, or his all-hours strip club, or his planned video empire. Evangelists,
feminists, and local watchdog groups all want him out of business. But someone
wants more than that, and has hired a killer to end Max’s career permanently.
Only another hit man—the ruthless professional known as Quarry, star of the
acclaimed series on Cinemax—can keep Climer from becoming a casualty in the
Sexual Revolution.
The longest-running series from Max Allan Collins, author of ROAD TO PERDITION,
the Quarry novels tell the story of an assassin with an unlikely taste for
justice. Once a Marine sniper, Quarry found a new home stateside with a group
of contract killers. But some men aren’t made for taking orders…

TURN ON THE HEAT
Erle Stanley Gardner
Cover art by Laurel Blechman, Robert Maguire
Erle Stanley Gardner was not just the creator of PERRY MASON—at the
time of his death, he was the best-selling American author of all time, with
hundreds of millions of books in print. Among those books were the 29 cases
of the brash, irresistible detective team of Bertha Cool and Donald Lam.
Last year, Hard Case Crime brought out the first new Cool and Lam novel in
decades, THE KNIFE SLIPPED, lost for 77 years after Gardner’s publisher refused
it. Now, we’re bringing you the book Gardner wrote to replace it, often considered
the best in the series: TURN ON THE HEAT.
Hired by a mysterious "Mr. Smith" to find a woman who vanished 21 years
earlier, Donald Lam finds himself facing a sadistic cop, a desperate showgirl,
a duplicitous client, and one very dogged (and beautiful) newspaper reporter—while
Bertha Cool’s attempts to cut herself in on this lucrative opportunity land
them both hip-deep in murder...
First appearance in bookstores in half a century!
Erle Stanley Gardner remains one of the most popular American authors of
all time
Features a new cover painting by Laurel Blechman, working from reference
photos shot by the legendary pulp illustrator Robert Maguire.

Publications Pulp Heroes Return In New Wild Adventures!
The Spider!, G-8, and Operator #5 in
an epic crossover event!
Coming in 2018!
Will Murray has announced that an agreement has
been reached with Argosy Communications. licensing the world- famous Popular
Publications pulp heroes to appear in a new series of authorized novels bearing
the Wild Adventures banner. Two distinct series will join the growing
Wild Adventures lineup, which includes Doc Savage, The Shadow, Tarzan of
the Apes and King Kong. All novels will be written by Will Murray.
Slated for 2018, the first release will be an epic crossover featuring The
Spider, James Christopher—America's Secret Agent, better known as Operator
5––and G-8, the legendary Flying Spy, entitled The Spider: Doom Legion. When
a strange meteor impacts Central Park, its emanations transform ordinary
citizens into mindless zombies whose burning eyes emit devastatingly destructive
rays. Richard Wentworth dons the mantle of The Spider—Nemesis of Evil—to
once again protect the city he loves. This brings him into conflict with
Secret Service Operator 5 and G-8, now with military intelligence.
Looming over Manhattan is a villain from the past. Tall, sinister, his true
identity unknown, with a seething wrath going back years, he has sworn to
kill one of the three crimefighters battling the Meteor Men. But who is his
target: The Spider, Operator 5, or, G-8? The answer to that mystery will
only be revealed in the pages of The Spider: Doom Legion….
Next, The Spider: Fury in Steel, in which a master villain attired in steel-clad
armor returns. This time, the plundering fiend has built an even more formidable
battle suit—and he is not alone.
The first Wild Adventure of James Christopher, Operator 5, is scheduled
to guest star the mysterious counterspy named Red Finger. Don't be surprised
if other heroes blaze their way through this Wild Adventures epic!
Each of these Wild Adventures will be released in trade paperback, ebook,
and hardcover formats. Every hardcover will feature a bonus novelette written
by Will Murray.
For The Spider: Doom Legion hardcover, The Secret 6 will be on hand to combat
the onslaught of meteor-maddened zombies terrorizing Long Island in their
first new exploit in over 80 years.
I’ve been a fan of The Spider since 1969, especially of those novels written
by the great Norvell W. Page. In recent years, I’ve been fortunate to have
written authorized Spider short stories. Writing a full-blown high-octane
Spider novel has been one of my secret ambitions. To revive the legendary
series, especially with a major team-up, is beyond my wildest dreams. But
here we are. Buckle up, the Wild Adventures is about to take on new meaning….
The Wild Adventures are released through Altus Press.

Pulp Adventurecon
November
4, 2017 -- One month to go!
Seventeen years and still going strong!
Pulp Adventurecon returns to the Ramada Inn of Bordentown, NJ this November
4th for another afternoon of pulp mania.
You'll find 46 tables of bargain-priced stuff lurking in the vendor room.
Get ready for another afternoon of buying and selling pulp magazines.
Some dealers will be carrying original paperback cover paintings, vintage
movie posters, and a selection of Golden Age comics.
In its infancy, Pulp Adventurecon dodged scheduling conflicts with other
collectibles shows. Many of those events have disappeared with the passage
of time. In 2001, we relocated the show to Bordentown's Ramada Inn, conveniently
located at New Jersey Turnpike Exit 7. The Ramada has been our venue for
16 years, and for some wayward pulp fans it's a second home.
Admission is a mere $5.00 per person.
Single tables are $50
Dealers receive a ten percent discount when reserving more than one table.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
Publishing legends The Black Mask (1920), Weird Tales (1923), and
Amazing Stories (1926) are considered so “extremely rare and valuable” that
the U.S. Library of Congress houses its collection of 277 issues in Washington,
D.C.’s Rare Book and Special Collections Division—along with the personal
libraries of Presidents, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, and one of
only three known perfect copies of the Gutenberg Bible in existence. With
its latest addition of 4 issues of The Black Mask (Aug. & Sept. 1920;
Dec. 1921; and Apr. 1922), the Pulp Magazines Project has made all 3 classic
titles available together—for the first time—in high-quality, cover-to-cover
digital editions.
Also available at the Pulp Magazines Project, new issues of the iconic “weird
menace” pulp, Dime Mystery Magazine (Apr. 1938 and Sept. 1946); Adventure
(Jul. 1, 1928; feat. Walt Coburn’s “The Man Who Hated Himself”); Western
Story (Jul. 27, 1940); Detective Story (May 1938; feat. Zorro-creator Johnston
McCulley’s “Thubway Tham’s Thothial Thecurity”); and histories of both The
Black Mask (E.R. Hagemann; UCLA) and Dime Mystery Magazine (Emily Sisler;
University of West Florida).
The Pulp Magazines Project
is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation
of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic
forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information
on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies
of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.
At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer
2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation
pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will
expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added.
Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923
titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles
from 1896 to 1946.
The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors,
fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities
for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We
will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote
new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans
and collectors beyond the college and university.

The Spider #47 Audiobook
Slaves of the Black Monarch
by Wayne Rogers writing as Grant Stockbridge
Read by Nick Santa Maria
Now available!
Ruthless, invulnerable, that Scarred
Hand reached out to destroy the entire law machine of New York — blasting
into merciless oblivion those juries which dared convict even a single criminal.
In that twilight of terror, when empty cells yawned for the felons who never
arrived, and helpless Justice hid her bloodied head — no one but Richard
Wentworth could combat this invisible Juggernaut which had paralyzed five
mighty boroughs. Once more, in the Spider’s weird vestments, Wentworth sets
out — this time to annihilate a brain so evil that it is encased in two heads!
|
|
By 1937, Richard Wentworth
had been operating as the Spider for nearly four years. He had been through
everything a good pulp hero could expect to face. Malevolent master villains.
Sinister Asian world conquerors. Diabolical mad scientists. And of course
since the Spider was a wanted criminal, endless officers of the law had been
pursuing him with single-minded fervor.
A mere mortal would have succumbed back in 1933. Not the indomitable Richard
Wentworth. He seemed to thrive on conditions of continuous peril. Yes, he
did put down his mask and guns a time or two, vowing never to become the
dreaded Spider again. But the call to battle always made his blood sing,
and inevitably the Master of Men returned to battle the underworld in another
blazing exploit.
For two years, Norvell W. Page and his understudy, Wayne Rogers, alternated
on writing the Spider novels. This was after Page came back from a hiatus
in the middle of 1937.
Nick Santa Maria reads this exciting suspense story of murder, mayhem and
mystery that perfectly evokes 1937 Manhattan. Slaves of the Black Monarch
originally published in The Spider magazine, August, 1937.

Recoverings
These new dust-jackets use scans of the original cover paintings
by J. Allen St. John and Studley O. Burroughs, producing the extremely sharp
detail and rich color that my dust-jackets are known for.
Click on the image to the right and see for yourself.
APACHE DEVIL was the last cover that Studley O. Burroughs did for ERB, Inc.
and CITY OF GOLD was the first that J. Allen St. John did, marking a return
of the illustrator to his favorite and most well-known subjects.
Studley originally had the CITY OF GOLD assignment in the fall of 1932,
but his personal problems got the better of him and he ended up way behind
schedule.
Burroughs had C.R. Rothmund, his secretary, write to St. John as early as
February of that year to ask him if he could reduce his prices for artwork,
which he had quoted teh previous February, to match their "budget allowance"
in the event that "the artist who is doing the work at present" would not
be able to deliver on time. St. John agreed to a 37% decrease and ERB, Inc.
put him off until it became clear that Studley would miss his deadline. Read
more about this on The Back Flap Blog soon to come…
