The Jailbird Flight
By Donald E. Keyhoe
Below the Rio Grande he had once been
known as “The Killer.” Now Captain Bruce Kirby flew through hell
skies, leader of the strangest squadron that ever dared
face death from flaming Spandaus. Outcasts—all of
them—branded with the convict’s arrow! No cowards
came to the Jailbird drome—only those dishonored war
eagles who chose a chance to die in action rather
than rot behind prison bars. Hot tempers, liquor, and
the madness of war had brought them low—but beneath it all
they still were men! A former U.S. Marine pilot,
author Donald E. Keyhoe was a prolific contributor
to the pulp magazines, but he is perhaps best remembered
for his UFO research in the Fifties and Sixties. In August
of 1931, Keyhoe started three long-lived series in three
different aviation magazines: Captain Philip Strange
in Flying Aces; The Devil Dog Squadron in Sky Birds;
and The Jailbird Flight in Battle Aces. This volume
features the first seven Jailbird adventures published
by Popular Publications in 1931 and ‘32: The Jailbird
Flight, The Drome of Vanishing Men, The Masked Skull Squadron,
The Jailbird Ace, Dead Man’s Drome, Claws of the Jailbird,
and The Skeleton Ace.

America’s enemies have assembled squadrons
of flying furies, exploding skeletons, and invisible airplanes to
turn the tide of the First World War. But
when things get weird, we get Strange. Captain Philip
Strange, that is—ace pilot and so-called “Brain-Devil”
of G-2 Intelligence. His assignment? Journey from the back-alleys
of Paris to the skies over Germany, taking
down flying fortresses, cursed aerodromes, strafing
skulls, and other wild weapons of mass destruction!
This fourth volume of Philip Strange missions includes
seven thrilling tales: Satan's Staffel, The Vanishing
Staffel, Hoodoo Drome, The Skull Staffel, The Skeleton
Barrage, Staffel of the Starved, and The Staffel

Airship 27 Productions
Proudly Presents
LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION
Now available!
Earlier in the year we learned that New Pulp writer/editor/publisher
Tommy Hancock was suffering from congestive heart-failure. A
relatively young family man, this was a dangerous condition
that threatened not only Tommy but his entire family.
Almost immediately after this news was made public, several
members of the New Pulp community began putting their heads together
to see if anything could be done to help the Hancocks.
“Jaime Ramos proposed the idea of doing a benefit anthology,”
says Airship 27 Productions Managing Editor, Ron Fortier.
“It was such a great idea, I realized it needed to get done
and we began planning such a project.” The first thing Fortier
did was bring aboard his partner in Airship 27, Art Director Rob
Davis. “There was no way this was going to fly without Rob handling
the book’s overall artwork and design.” Fortier then went to
Hancock and informed him of their plans. With Hancock’s blessings,
he then posted an ad on Facebook explaining the project and seeking
submissions from both writers and artists. “It was always
our intention to do this as a traditional pulp tome and thus artwork
would be a major element in the final product.”
Much to Fortier’s surprise, and delight, the first creator
to volunteer his assistance was Douglas Klauba, one
of the finest artists in the field. Klauba volunteered
to paint the anthology’s cover once the book was assembled.
“Honestly,” Fortier confesses, “I was in shock. Doug is an
amazing artist and his offering to do the cover was very much
an omen that we were about to put together something truly unique.”
Within 48 hours after posting his recruiting ad, Fortier had
received 57 commitments by New Pulp writers while 36 artists
in the field signed on to do the illustrations. Amongst
these creators were some of the most popular New Pulp writers
and artists in the field. In fact, getting so many promised stories
in just two days, Fortier begrudgingly realized he and his
associates were being handed a giant book and he publicly closed
the admission call. “It was crazy,” he recalls. “Fifty-seven
stories in just two days! Of course there were naysayers who
warned me we’d never get all of them. They were right, we
got 62 instead.”
And so the project began with Fortier reading each entry
and then assigning it to an artist to illustrate.
Each tale features one black and white illustration.
Ramos acted as his assistant editor proofing teach story
after Fortier with them. Then, months into the project,
Ramos, who suffers from diabetes, found his own health in jeopardy
and after having handled half the stories, was forced to sideline
himself. What looked to be a major set-back was averted
with writer/editor Todd Jones, a protégé of Fortier’s,
volunteered to take on the task of finishing the proofing.
And so, after months of ups and downs. Airship 27 Productions
is extremely proudly to present LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION.
A giant treasure chest of some of the finest New Pulp fiction
ever produced in an 830 page collection. Representing
the varied genres of pulp tradition, this volume features
tales of horror, mystery, horror, suspense, pirates, fantasy,
private eyes, crime-busting avengers and westerns to name a few.
“Rob and I kidded during the long months of production that
we had everything pulp save for a romance story,” quips
Fortier. “Then in the final days of story submissions,
we were sent a romance. No lie!”
LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION is now available at Amazon.com
in both hard copy and on Kindle. All profits earned
by this amazing book are going to Tommy Hancock and his
family. Sure to become a valued collector’s item, LEGENDS
OF NEW PULP FICTION is a one of a kind title pulp fans young
and old, will cherish in years to come.
RADIO ARCHIVES SIGNS ON
From Airship27 Productions comes this late breaking news.
Radio Archives takes on LEGENDS OF NEW PULP FICTION.
"We are all going to find out if the audiobook of Legends
of New Pulp Fiction is the longest audiobook ever recorded. Radio
Archives is proud to announce that Ken St. Denis of New York
City has signed the contract to record this 40 plus hour long
audiobook. I talked to Ken on Christmas Eve to make sure he knew what
he was signing up for. Ken had read the Airship 27 press release
and thought it was a tremendous project and was anxious to get
started." Tom Brown.
"This is just pure frosting on the cake," adds Ron Fortier.
"As with the book and Kindle versions, proceeds from
this gargantuan audiobook will go directly to Tommy and his
family. We tip our hats to Tom Brown and Radio Archives.
Merry Christmas indeed."

Amazingly, there has never been
a book quite like this--a celebration of frightful images, compiled
and presented by some of the genre's most respected names. Editor
Stephen Jones and his stellar team of contributors have sourced
visuals from archives and private collections (including their own)
worldwide, ensuring an unprecedented selection that is accessible
to those discovering the genre, while also including many images that
will be rare and unfamiliar to even the most committed fan.
While acknowledging the beginnings of horror-related art in legends
and folk tales, the focus of the book is on how the genre has
presented itself to the world since the creations of Bram Stoker
and Mary Shelley first became part of the public consciousness in
the 19th century. It's all here: from early engravings via dust
jackets, book illustrations, pulp magazines, movie posters, comic
books, and paintings to today's artists working entirely in the digital
realm.
From the shockingly lurid to the hauntingly beautiful--including
images of vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, demons, serial
killers, alien invaders, and more--every aspect of the genre is
represented in ten themed chapters. Quotes from artists/illustrators,
and a selection from writers and filmmakers, are featured throughout.
Among those writing chapters is Lovecraft expert S.T. Joshi, artist
Bob Eggleton and writer and art collector Robert Weinberg--one
of the three collectors who compiled the recent Collector’s Book of
Virgil Finlay. Artists are far too many to list, but they do include
Finlay, Hannes Bok, J. Allen St. John, Berni Wrightson, Alan Lee,
Michael Whelan, Jim Burns, John Howe, Basil Gogos, Kelly Freas, Gary
Gianni, Donato Giancola, Giger, Steve Fabian, Clark Ashton Smith and
so many more.
This book is packed
with lots of art including pulp covers and pulp interior art.
Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, J. Allen St. John, Margaret Brundage,
Edd Cartier, Lawrence Sterne Stevens, Rudolph Belarski, Alexander
Leydenfrost, Frank Kelly
Freas, Steve Fabian, Frank R. Paul, Jon Douglas Arfstrom, Lee Brown
Coye, Clark Ashton Smith, Howard V. Brown, Hugh Rankin, John Newton
Howitt, Frank Utpatel, and more!

MEN
AND WOMEN WITH WINGS
Leslie F. Stone was one of the earliest women writers
of Science Fiction, beginning in 1929. She never hide her sex
by using initials and didn’t try to write like “one of the boys.”
“Men With Wings” is her first published story, a short novella
about the evolution of a species of flying humans and the
utopian society they form. Its sequel, “Women With Wings”
is set centuries later then winged humanity has come to replace Homo
Sapiens. But tragedy stalks the flying species as the women
are increasingly dying in childbirth. Unless something drastic is done
the species will go extinct.

and Women with Wings.

ON THE BRINK OF THE WORLD'S END
Seven French scientific romances by Raoul Bigot, Jacques-Antoine
Dulaure, Charles Epheyre, Jules Hoche, Joseph Méry and
Colonel Royet
adapted by Brian Stableford
This is the thirteenth in a series of
anthologies of exemplary texts in the evolution of the French genre of
roman scientifique.
The seven stories collected here were published between
1784 and 1928. They include two remarkable tales about Future
Paris, the first story to seize upon the potential of air balloons as
imaginative devices, and an extraordinary pseudo-case study in
magnetism by Nobel prize-winning physiologist Charles Richet (writing
as "Charles Epheyre").
Also included are a novella about the "death" of iron
and how it changed the fate of the Great War, mind-reading technology
and how it can be used to solve crimes, and the eponymous 1928
novel by Colonel Royet, which explores in a colorful fashion how
a mad scientist threatens the stability of the world.

5x8 trade paperback, 364
pages
THE SECOND LIFE OF DOCTOR ALBIN
by Raoul Gineste
adapted by Brian Stableford
The Second Life of Doctor Albin (1902)
belongs to a set of fictions that explore the supposed psychology typical
of scientists with considerable analytical intensity. One of the
central tenets of these is that scientific genius is incompatible
with, and perhaps antithetical to, love between the sexes. The novel
provides what is perhaps the most searching analysis of that allegedly-perverse
emotional involvement with science to be found in the genre.
Raoul Gineste (1852-1914) was a scientist himself as
well as a poet, and his attitude is far more balanced than some, infused
with a genuine puzzlement and exploratory curiosity as well as a
sense of inevitable tragedy.
US $29.95 / GBP £19.99
5x8 trade paperback, 404
pages

Blood 'N' Thunder
/ Murania Press
This wildly melodramatic thriller, originally published
in the August 1933 issue of Dime Mystery Magazine,
provided the template for countless pulp-hero
novels published during the Thirties. Depression-era
readers craved outlandish menaces to take their minds
off their troubles, and The Purple Eye was at the top of
the list.
The Eye, maniacal criminal mastermind and leader of the
ancient death cult known as the Brotherhood
of Baktuun, terrorizes New York City with a
series of high-profile murders accomplished by mysterious
means. Seven million souls are at his mercy as his
outrages mount in dizzying succession. The
police, constrained by legal niceties and endless red
tape, seem powerless to thwart his mad schemes. Enter
Wayne Saxon, millionaire sportsman and world traveler,
who devotes his life to running the Eye to earth. He works
within the law when possible, but without it when necessary.
Will he succeed? There’s a thrill on every page of this
baffling mystery.
Shawn Danowski’s introduction, “The Pulp That Murder Built,”
provides a history of Dime Mystery in
its early, pre-weird menace phase.

Cancelled
in Red
by Hugh Pentecost
An Inspector Luke Bradley mystery
When it debuted in 1939, Cancelled
in Red was the $1,000 Red Badge Prize Mystery winner. It also walked
away with the $10,000 prize for the 1939 Dodd Mead Mystery Contest.
Dodd, Mead & Company issued the story in paperback and hardcover
that same year. The novel also launched the "Hugh Pentecost" penname,
which began to overshadow Judson P. Philips, who continued writing
pulp magazine stories and serials while "Pentecost" reached the slick-paper
publications and the burgeoning paperback market. (More about that
in Audrey Parente's book Once a Pulp Man, the Secret Life of Judson
Philips as Hugh Pentecost).
Max Adrian was the rare stamp broker everyone in the know avoided
— and those unfortunate enough to do business with him harbored
grudges. It never mattered to the shifty broker, until someone demanded
a refund at the point of a gun. Soon, Adrian’s rival Larry Storm
plays amateur detective for the benefit of a dishy dame, searching
for a hidden cache of priceless stamps. Storm is one step ahead of
the tenacious Inspector Luke Bradley, who’s one step behind a cold-blooded
killer — and Storm had better start running....
Judson P. Philips rubbed elbows with movie stars and directors.
He owned a newspaper and scratched out columns in others. He penned
hundreds of stories in pulp magazines, digests and slick magazines,
under a trio of pen names. His words flooded radio, television and
film. He faced down Newsweek editors, owned an equity summer stock
theater and boosted many ingénues to fame.
He filled pulp magazines like Argosy with stories about tough
detectives, smooth-talking criminals, and down-and-out athletes
who make Rocky-like comebacks. As "Hugh Pentecost," he graduated
into the lucrative slick-paper magazines and burgeoning paperback
mystery field.
Despite awards and financial gain, he deemed himself a failure—His
famous “Hugh Pentecost” penname came at a price, and five marriages
cost him more in emotional capital. Once a Pulp Man: The Secret
Life of Judson Philips as Hugh Pentecost unveils the man who sneered
at Yul Brynner, ignored McCarthyism, proposed to dozens of women, and
created a lasting legacy of entertainment.
Audrey Parente established her street cred with author biographies
like Pulpmaster: The Theodore Roscoe Story and Pulp Man's Odyessey:
The Hugh B. Cave Story. A retired reporter for the Ormond Beach New
Journal, she spents years preparing this volume, researching Philip's
background, compiling a complete bibliography, and transcribing
hours of interviews she conducted with Philips in the late 1980s.

THE BRONZE GAZETTE
Subscriptions for 2016 are now available!
Earlier this summer, Howard Wright announced that issue
75 would be the final number of his Doc Savage-oriented
fanzine, The Bronze Gazette.
Howard began the zine in 1990 as The Doc Savage Gazette. (The
name was quickly changed after four issues because of trademark
problems.)
It’s clearly been a labor of love for Howard, who has regularly
put out three issues a year for 25 years now.
But Howard decided it was time to move on.
However, The Bronze Gazette will continue!
PULPlications — run by Terry Allen of Fantom Press and Keith
Wilson of Doc Savage Fantasy Covers — will be the publisher,
while Chuck Welch of Flearun will be the editor.
The Bronze Gazette’s 76th issue will debut in Spring 2016.
Terry says the zine will keep its digest size, and will
run about 48 pages.
There will be a slate of regular contributors, but article
submissions will be welcomed.
Subscriptions

BUNDUKI by J.T. Edson - Now available!
BUNDUKI AND DAWN
While plots and counter-plots develop among the Mun-Gatahs,
Bunduki and Dawn make their way to a Telonga village.
The relationship between the adoptive cousins is
gradually changing: a romance is blossoming.
At the village of Jey-Mat, Bunduki proves his value to
the inhabitants by diverting a herd of elephants away from
the village crops; befriending Tantor just as Tarzan
did when he was a youngster. Bunduki is troubled by the
docility of the Telonga tribe; they don't even put up a struggle
when the People-Taker steals their women and children.
They quite simply don't know how to defend themselves.
He vows to train them in the art of war.
Meanwhile Dryaka visits Charole to put their rivalry
aside. They agree that the only way to win back their
power is to capture Bunduki and Dawn and take possession
of their superior weapons. They wonder whether the mysterious
tribe known as 'The Apes' might, in fact, be Zillikian's 'Suppliers'.
Bunduki is called to a neighbouring village to deal with
a marauding tiger. He slays it in true Tarzan style and
takes the skin back to Jey-Mat, presenting it to Dawn
as an engagement present. With the village celebrating, the
hunters drink their wine, unaware that it has been drugged
by the Elders. Later, they awaken to find themselves
in a cave, its entrance sealed by bars. They have been 'put
away'. Bunduki hears elephants nearby and calls to Tantor in
the language of the mangani. They tear down the bars, freeing
their friends.
Back in the village, the People-Taker has taken everyone
apart from babies and the elderly. Hunters from neighbouring
villages arrive, eager to join with Bunduki in seeking
revenge. They set off on the trail of the slavers. The battle
is savage but, with more than a little help from Bunduki,
they win; slaughtering the People-Taker's retinue and freeing
the captured villagers ... But Dawn isn't among them. She
has been sent ahead to Bon-Gatah. Bunduki has a better chance
than most of finding her.

BUNDUKI by J.T. Edson
- Coming February 15!
SACRIFICE FOR THE QUAGGA
GOD
When Dawn Drummond-Clayton is carried off by the servants
of the Mun-Gatah's High Priest and promised as a
sacrifice to the Quagga God, Bunduki is hot on her trail.
His hunt is interrupted, though, when a massive snake
drops out of a tree and traps him in its thick coils. The
constricting pressure is too much for him and he loses
consciousness. Bunduki is rescued by a band of Amazons led
by Beryl Snowhill, an Earth girl of his acquaintance who, previously
unknown to him, was also transported to Zillikian.
The Amazons and Bunduki join forces and the chase after
Dawn's abductors continues. Meanwhile, the political
in-fighting increases. Dryaka and Charole have
the upper hand and Dawn is soon their prisoner once again.
Bunduki's party allies itself with the Elders and heads
towards Bon-Gatah, the main Mun-Gatah city. Bunduki and
the Amazons fight their way into the city while the Mun-Gatahs
descend into civil warfare. They arrive at the arena just
in time. Dawn is desperately trying to fend off the Quagga
God, a massive and extremely wild zebra. She will need all her
survival skills to survive. As does Bunduki to prevent the curse
of the 'Thunder Powder' from descending upon the planet of Zillikian.
Betrayals, plots and counter-plots are exposed, 'terrifiers'
explode and the supporters of the Elders do battle with
the rebels.

CARNACKI: THE GHOST-FINDER
- Coming
this month!
Coming in February 2016, a brand new series
of horror readings performed by Dan Starkey...
Creeping out after our announcement of Dracula, Big Finish
is pleased to be able to confirm details of a brand new
range of audiobook readings for 2016. Carnacki: The Ghost-Finder
brings to life the cases of the supernatural detective, created
by writer William Hope Hodgson in 1910.
‘The Carnacki stories are fantastic,’ says producer Scott
Handcock, ‘and Hodgson’s writing is so wonderfully rich
and evocative, it made sense for us to bring them to life
in a series of equally fantastic readings. The first six
tales especially are incredibly atmospheric - a cross between
Conan Doyle and MR James - as Carnacki finds himself investigating
supernatural happenings in the early twentieth century.’
The classic tales will be performed by Dan Starkey (Doctor
Who’s Strax the Sontaran) as Thomas Carnacki with
support from Joseph Kloska as his associate Dodgson.
The range is directed and produced by Scott Handcock,
whose previous work for Big Finish includes The Confessions
of Dorian Gray and Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus.
‘Strangely, I was working with Dan in Cardiff when I
happened to mention I’d be tackling the Carnacki stories,’
continues Scott, ‘and he immediately started gushing
about the character and the stories, so it was a delight
when he agreed to bring Carnacki to life on audio. The
language and writing is so rich, it’s great to let Dan’s performance
take centre-stage, coupled with a lovely score from Ioan Morris
and Rhys Downing.’
Carnacki: The Ghost-Finder collects together six of William
Hope Hodgson’s original stories:
The Gateway of the Monster
The House Among the Laurels
The Whistling Room
The Horse of the Invisible
The Searcher of the End House
The Thing Invisible
All six stories will be included as part of a single volume
which can be pre-ordered today for £18 on download
ahead of its release in February 2016.
Please note that this release
is download-only.

can subscribe for only $1.99 / month
Written in 1941 but not published until 1967 - and just
the second historical novel written by Edgar Rice
Burroughs - this is a stark tale of madness
as told by a slave of the decidedly insane (consensus
opinion) Roman emperor Caligula. It promises
to be a very different online adventure strip.
Adaptation by Tom Simmons

January 2016
The second part of "In The Fog" by Richard Harding Davis:
"The Story of the Queen’s Messenger," just as it appeared in the April,
1902 issue of The Windsor Magazine, including the illustrations
by Maurice Greiffenhagen.
December 2015
Direct from the March, 1902 issue of The Windsor
Magazine, we present the first portion of the three-part
short story "In The Fog" by Richard Harding Davis, including the
illustrations by Maurice Greiffenhagen.
Introduction by Dan Neyer.
Also, to wrap up our reprinting of the Harvard work of George
Allan England, we offer to you "Reginald Pym's Class Day" as it appeared in the June,
1903 issue of The Harvard Illustrated Magazine. Introduction and Afterword
by Bob Gay.
November 2015
The only Christmas themed Holmes story, "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," as it appeared
in the January, 1892 number of The Strand Magazine, is presented
and includes an introduction by Dan Neyer and all
the Sydney Paget illustrations.
Also, the penultimate Harvard Illustrated story by George
Allan England, "Bench Carvings at Harvard," which we strongly believe
to be England's first attempt at science fiction.
October 2015
Just in time for Halloween, we are pleased to present
"In Amundsen's Tent" by John Martin Leahy, a classic
horror story from the pages of Weird Tales. We've also discovered
some interesting connections between this story and Leahy's
other work, which you will find documented in an
Afterword to the story.
Also, in a continuation of our reprinting of the Harvard
work of George Allan England we present
"Sciurus Carolinensis, Esq." and article about the squirrels
that, in England's day, inhabited the Harvard Yard and environs.
September 2015
Another story from the Harvard years of George Allan
England, "The Divided Letter," a romance that originally appeared
in the October, 1902 issue of The Harvard Illustrated Magazine.
Also, The first Sherlock Holmes short story (and the
only appearance of Irene Adler) from the July,
1891 issue of The Strand, "A Scandal in Bohemia," including all the Sidney Paget
illustrations and an introduction by Dan Neyer.
August 2015
A romantic adventure set in Morocco by A. J.
Dawson, The Powder Play, as it appeared in the January, 1898
issue of Pearson’s Magazine (UK).
Our presentation also includes the Warwick Goble
illustrations, an introduction by Bob Gay and,
as a part of the intro, a reprinting of an article
that appeared in the
January, 1901 issue of The Bookman that includes
additional biographical information about Dawson
not found in the usual sources.
And...
Continuing our reprinting of the Harvard work of George
Allan England, we present “Two-Fifty An Hour - A Tragedy in One Act” that
originally appeared in the February, 1902 issue of The Harvard Illustrated
Magazine.
July 2015
In Writings
Expanding our selection of stories by Baroness
Orczy, this month we introduce The Baroness Orczy Collection, which includes a biography
of the Baroness and links to her stories all in one place.
And, to kick off our new addition, we have reprinted
the Baroness's third published story,
The Traitor --a story which seems to have never been
reprinted and has nothing to do with the Scarlet Pimpernel.
Lastly, in our continuing reprinting of George Allan
England, we have put together another selection
from his Harvard years, Illustrations: 3 Short Works that were originally written
while he was a student and, like with the Orczy story, have never
been reprinted.
June 2015
In Writings
The first, and chronologically the last, Mowgli
story, "In the Rukh" by Rudyard Kipling as it appeared in the
June, 1896 issue of McClure's Magazine with illustrations by W. A.
C. Page and dual introductions by Bob Gay and Dan Neyer.
Famous (and forgotten) Fiction is a new
site featuring familiar and obscure fiction along with
articles, pictures and essays. In the Writings
section, we have fiction by H. C. Bailey (the first Reggie
Fortune story), Carl Stephenson, Sinclair Lewis and
a large selection of Kipling, including the complete Mowgli
stories and "The Man Who Would Be King." We've
also added an article about Sleeman's An Account
of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their Dens, that includes
a complete reprinting of the work.
In Comics, there is an overview of Superman
#205 ("The Man Who Destroyed Krypton!")
and a look at a Steve Ditko illustrated
story that bears a strong resemblance to a well-known story
by Carl Stephenson. The Pictures section starts
with a group of collectible (and some not so)
items and is the first of 24 collections.
The site is hoping for subscribers
to keep it going and future plans call
for more stories, more articles and there
are a number of novels we also intend to
add to the mix.
New material will be appearing
on the last Friday of each month (which means
we'll have more new stuff at the end of
February).
In a few month s, we will also
be offering ebooks: on the site (in PDF)
and at Amazon and B&N in their proprietary
formats.

Leigh Brackett (1915-1978), noted
author of mystery & science fiction novels—with screenplays
for THE BIG SLEEP, RIO BRAVO and THE EMPIRE STRIKES
BACK—sees her Centennial celebrated with a previously
unpublished story in the forthcoming Haffner Press
collection: LEIGH BRACKETT CENTENNIAL.
Discovered by editor Stephen Haffner, Brackett’s unpublished
story “They” is a mature science fiction tale
of power and intrigue, of homegrown xenophobia versus
stellar exploration, with an answer to the ultimate
question: “Are we alone?”
“They” leads off this tribute volume collecting the majority
of Brackett’s nonfiction writings, supplemented with
vintage interviews and commentaries/remembrances from such luminaries
as Ray Bradbury, Michael Moorcock, Richard A. Lupoff
and more.
“Her dialogue crackled, the characters lived and breathed.
For any burgeoning fan of film, you couldn’t ask for
a better inspiration than Leigh Brackett.” —George Lucas
“She had a marvelous ability for moving a narrative along…I
remember one story of mine which had me frozen…she
took over and wrote the first thousand words—and
it was published that way.” —Ray Bradbury
LEIGH BRACKETT CENTENNIAL covers numerous facets and events
of Brackett’s life, in her own words, and in the
words of those who knew her:
- Brackett writes of bringing Philip Marlowe into the
1970s for Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye . .
.
- SF-author and NASA employee Joseph Green records
the time he hosted Brackett at the launch of Apollo
XII . . .
- Bookseller Ray Walsh documents the day he escorted
Brackett to view a new groundbreaking space-fantasy
film in the summer 1977 . . .
Available for preorder, LEIGH BRACKETT CENTENNIAL continues
the effort begun in 2002 by Haffner Press to collect,
preserve, and present the works of Leigh Brackett
for current and future generations.

FREDRIC BROWN MYSTERY LIBRARY
VOLUME 1: MURDER DRAWS A CROWD
(Writer) Fredric Brown,
Jack Seabrook (Cover) Norman Saunders
Still available for pre-order!
Production Update from Haffner Press!
It is with much frustration we
announce that MURDER DRAWS A CROWD: THE FREDRIC BROWN MYSTERY LIBRARY,
VOLUME ONE hit another stumbling block. This was a big one. We
supplied materials to the printer in August 2015 and, after
several challenges (see our previous e-newsletter), we were informed
in early December that the books were finally finished.
However, the review copies sent by the printer for our final
approval did not meet the standards of Haffner Press. The binding
method they used to get the cloth-covered cases to fit the page-blocks
matches no book we've ever seen, let alone published. This binding
method also forces the spine of the dustjacket to wrap onto the back
of the book. When we were informed that the balance of the inventory matched
these review copies, we rejected the entire lot.
As of this writing, we are scheduling a proper run of the book,
updated for 2016, bringing you the edition of MURDER DRAWS A
CROWD to which you're entitled. This means an additional delay
of several months. We wish there was better news. As the first book
of the multi-volume series collecting the mystery fiction of Fredric
Brown, we want this book to be a point of pride in your collection.
Fredric Brown — and you — deserve it.
A massive fix of liquor-fueled
murder, smoke-clouded mystery, and
hard-hitting revenge from the author of
The Screaming Mimi and The Fabulous Clipjoint.
This archival-quality hardcover assembles 38 incredibly
rare stories from 1938-1942, with the original Pulp artwork
from such magazines as Thrilling Detective, Masked Detective, Detective
Fiction Weekly, and more. This is the book Fredric
Brown fans have been waiting for!

Update from Haffner Press!
While the news on the first volume of THE FREDRIC BROWN
MYSTERY LIBRARY is not the greatest, we are pleased to report
that work on the second volume, DEATH IN THE DARK, is in the home
stretch.
Fredric Brown scholar Jack Seabrook is on hand again with an
erudite introduction and we have been successful in securing
many more of the original illustrations; not only those from the
detective pulps, but also those for the rarities from the trade
magazines INDEPENDENT SALESMAN, THE INVENTOR, FEEDSTUFFS, etc.
“. . . enough good people
put Brown on their must-read lists and then become evangelists to keep
his name alive on the same high shelf as Hammett, Thompson,
Ross Macdonald and other crime icons. Somewhere up in literary
heaven, I hope he’s looking down, sipping a beer, playing his
flute and smiling.”—Dick Adler, Chicago Tribune
While the editor of this series only recently came upon the above
quote from 2008, these eyes read no truer words. Work has
been underway for nearly a year on assembling the first two
volumes of a series provisionally titled LOADED: THE COLLECTED
FREDRIC BROWN. Now is your chance to get in on the ground floor
of what is hoped to be the definitive collection of Fredric Brown
sans his science fiction works. Assembled in chronological order
of publication, this set will contain all the short fiction (of all
genres: mystery, horror, noir, western, detection, etc.) and all of
Brown’s novels (again, excepting his sf works). You’ll be able to
enjoy Fredric Brown at his longer lengths from The Fabulous Clipjoint
and Night of the Jabberwock to The Lenient Beast and Mrs. Murphy’s
Underpants.
Assisting with this effort have been Brown bibliographer Phil
Stephensen-Payne and Brown biographer Jack Seabrook. This massive
undertaking could not have been accomplished without their
help.

Before his marriage to (and subsequent collaborations
with) Catherine L. Moore, Henry
Kuttner was a frequent contributor to the pulp
magazines that specialized in the weird, supernatural,
horror, and science fiction genre. Beginning in 1936,
with the minor classic “The Graveyard Rats,” Kuttner launched
a steady stream of short stories aimed at Weird Tales, Strange
Stories, Thrilling Mystery, and others.
Writing for Weird Tales brought Kuttner into direct
correspondence with that magazine’s premier contributor.
H. P. Lovecraft. Kuttner set several stories in Lovecraft’s
“Cthulhu Mythos” and two are presented in THE WATCHER
AT THE DOOR: “Hydra” and “The Hunt.”
At this point in his still-young career, Kuttner had
cracked the science fiction market and was
steadily publishing in Thrilling Wonder
Stories, Fantastic Adventures, Science Fiction,
and made his first sale to the new
prestigious fantasy magazine, UNKNOWN.
In the course of writing the stories collected in this
volume, Kuttner married Catherine Lucille Moore
on June 7, 1940 (in New York with artist
Virgil Finlay as Best Man).

The Complete Ivy Frost
by Donald Wandrei
Cover Art by Raymond
Swanland
Now available for pre-order!
It may come as a surprise to some that
Donald Wandrei wrote more mysteries than
all his horror, fantasy, and science fiction
tales combined. This volume collects all eighteen
adventures of Wandrei’s ratiocinative detective
I.V. Frost, who is ably assisted by his beautiful
and tough female assistant, Jean Moray. A scientist
and inventor, Frost has his own approach to
solving mysteries. Rather than following the usual
hard-drinking, trench-coated style of many of his contemporaries,
Frost’s strategy was to mix the logic of Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes with the technology
of Lester Dent’s Doc Savage. In 2000, D.H. Olson edited
a volume published by Fedogan and Bremer collecting the first
eight of Frost’s adventures. A second volume of
the remaining 10 tales was promised but never materialized.

Before he was a comic-book pioneer, Major Malcolm-Wheeler
Nicholson wrote adventure tales for
the great pulp magazines—and no run-of-the-mill
pulp fiction was it. The Major served as a cavalry
officer on the southwest border during the Mexican
Revolution. While the First World War raged
in Europe, he fought the Moro insurgency in the southern
Philippines. Then followed his strangest assignment, conducting
espionage in legendarily hostile Siberia. After the
war he was stationed in Western Europe. These
places became the settings for the majority
of his hardboiled adventure stories. His
use of authentic detail, combined with his superior
storytelling ability, make his stories difficult
to put down. You read one of the Major’s
entrancing tales—and your imagination is transported back
to those real places of danger and daring!
This inaugural collection of the Major’s fiction
includes stories set in all
four of his real-life arenas, originally
published in top adventure pulps: Adventure, Argosy,
The Popular Magazine. It is time for the Major
to receive his due—as one of the genuine larger-than-life men
of the pulps. Included is an in-depth introduction by
Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson, the Major’s granddaughter.
“Yes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson
is one of the very, very few people responsible for the birth
of the comic book industry as the visionary founder
of what we today call DC Comics. And, yes,
Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson is one of the very,
very few people responsible for giving
the world Superman.”
Michael Uslan,
Executive Producer of all the Batman movies,
Comic book historian, and author of his memoir,
The Boy Who Loved Batman.
“Not many adventure writers
can claim to have based their stories on their own exploits. Malcolm
Wheeler-Nicholson could—and because of it, his
evocations of heroism and combat have a believability
and a personal depth unlike anything else in pulp
fiction.”
Gerard Jones,
Author of Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters and
the Birth of the Comic Book.

Pearls from Peoria (Kindle Edition) - Now available!
by Philip José Farmer
An outstanding and unique collection from an outstanding
and unique talent. Philip José Farmer, three time Hugo winner
and Nebula Grand Master in 2001, has written exciting and provocative
fiction since his debut, the ground breaking “The Lovers,” stunned
the SF community in 1952.
Pearls from Peoria assembles over sixty previously uncollected pieces
of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and autobiography that demonstrate
the extraordinary range and vitality of Philip José Farmer’s
imagination.
Many of the pieces appear here for the first time anywhere, while
others have previously appeared only in small run magazines that
have remained elusive and avidly sought after by Farmer aficionados.
These tales and articles provide the reader with a grand tour of
the literary pocket universes that make up Philip José Farmer’s
private cosmos. The range is vast, from horror to pulp heroes,
and autobiography with pieces on Tarzan and Edgar Rice Burroughs,
Doc Savage and Sir Richard Burton, Riverworld and Oz, Sherlock Holmes
and Ralph von Wau Wau.
Pearls from Peoria represents outstanding value for people who
want access to this incredibly rare work without spending a fortune,
and copious amounts of time and energy, tracking down the individual
original publications.

Project - Now online!
Publishing legends The Black Mask (1920), Weird
Tales (1923), and Amazing Stories (1926)
are considered so “extremely rare and valuable” that
the U.S. Library of Congress houses its collection of
277 issues in Washington, D.C.’s Rare Book and Special
Collections Division—along with the personal libraries
of Presidents, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts,
and one of only three known perfect copies of the
Gutenberg Bible in existence. With its latest
addition of 4 issues of The Black Mask (Aug. & Sept.
1920; Dec. 1921; and Apr. 1922), the Pulp
Magazines Project has made all 3 classic titles
available together—for the first time—in high-quality, cover-to-cover
digital editions.
Also available at the Pulp Magazines Project,
new issues of the iconic “weird menace” pulp,
Dime Mystery Magazine (Apr. 1938 and
Sept. 1946); Adventure (Jul. 1, 1928; feat. Walt Coburn’s
“The Man Who Hated Himself”); Western Story (Jul. 27, 1940);
Detective Story (May 1938; feat. Zorro-creator Johnston
McCulley’s “Thubway Tham’s Thothial Thecurity”); and histories
of both The Black Mask (E.R. Hagemann; UCLA)
and Dime Mystery Magazine (Emily Sisler; University
of West Florida).
The Pulp Magazines Project
is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation
of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary &
artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides
information on the history of this important but long neglected
medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.
At the heart of the Project's mission
is the archive itself. In summer 2011,
it began with a modest library of five representative
first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth
century. Over time, the archive will expand,
new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials
added. Eventually, the archive will feature a
broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where
copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles
from 1896 to 1946.
The Project is dedicated to fostering ties
between communities of collectors, fans, and
academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will
offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both
scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide
information on upcoming conferences and conventions,
and promote new working relationships between academics
and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond
the college and university.
