Black
Coat Press
Now available! He gathered together nearly a thousand
people, who would be the masters and leaders of the new society.
One unique duty was imposed on those sovereigns. They were not to take account of any individual life among the few million unfortunates submissive to them; only the struggle against the Necron and the atmospheric poisons was important. The Ultimate Pleasure (1925) is a dystopia that describes in stark, uncompromising terms a future tyranny and the struggle of its heroine, known only as B 309. In that world, a small technocratic elite use deliberate terror in a desperate attempt to preserve the last remnant of the human race from a worldwide disaster precipitated by a massive disruption of the San Andreas Fault. But what happens after the revolution?... Kaschmir (1925) is Dunan's engagingly idiosyncratic variation on the exotic femme fatale, the beautiful but deadly Zenahab of Kashmir, inspired by H. Rider Haggard's She. Metal (1920), one of the author's earliest works, is a prehistoric Atlantean fantasy inspired by the works of J.-H. Rosny Aîné. US

5x8 trade paperback, 264 pages Maya is to be the first vibration of
the great cycle of Redemption.
Artificial wings will lead to the wings of Genii. The ovipares will triumph over the vivipares, as equilibrium and the alternation of forces requires. Odette Dulac's The War of the Sexes (1926) describes a strangely fanciful sexual biology, combined with insectile analogies and an astrological theory of evolution. It incorporates an idiosyncratic mysticism based on Buddhist and Hindu ideas, filtered through the reinterpretations of theosophist feminism. The result of that triple layering of fantastic notions produced a unique literary construct that has no parallel in literary history. It foreshadows, in many ways, such endeavors as Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. Odette Dulacwas one of the most popular cabaret singers in Paris during the first few years of the 20th century. She quit the stage in 1904, launching an entirely new career as a sculptor and a writer, active in the cause of women's rights. US

5x8 trade paperback, 228 pages Frantically, she leapt, bounding over
the furniture, running on all fours, panting, her eyes bulging, her jaw
menacing, her mouth foaming.
In that disorder, to be sure, the beauty became the beast again-but even so, she remained graceful, desirable. Felicien Champsaur's Nora, The Ape-Woman (1929) is a sequel to both Homo-Deus and Ouha, King of the Apes. Nora is the story of two hybrids: a beautiful dancer sired by an orangutan and a human scientist, further humanized by surgery, and the son of a native woman and the part-human orangutan Ouha, King of the Apes. It is concerned with evolutionary history and the true nature of the simian and human species; it deals with the scientific modification of such species by means of surgery, thus enhancing the human condition, ultimately leading to the creation of supermen and the conquest of death. Despite various critical claims, Nora refuses to be racist and proudly claims that supposedly civilized white men are not superior to other races, or even species. It is a story of the triumph of animality, and argues that such triumph is not something of which we should be ashamed. US

in Their Dens, that includes a complete reprinting
of the work.

The site is hoping for subscribers to keep it going and future plans call for more stories, more articles and there are a number of novels we also intend to add to the mix. The Forgotten Room
– Arriving in book stores May 5! by Lincoln Child Jeremy Logan (The Third Gate, Deep Storm) is an "enigmalogist"—an investigator who specializes in analyzing phenomena that have no obvious explanation. In this newest novel Logan finds himself on the storied coastline of Newport, Rhode Island, where he has been retained by Symposikon, one of the oldest and most respected think tanks in America. Just days earlier, a series of frightening events took place in the sprawling seaside mansion that houses the organization. One of its most distinguished doctors began acting erratically—violently attacking an assistant in the mansion's opulent library and, moments later, killing himself in a truly shocking fashion. Terrified by the incident and the bizarre evidence left behind, the group hires Logan to investigate—discreetly—what drove this erudite man to madness. His work leads him to an unexpected find. In a long-dormant wing of the estate, Logan uncovers an ingeniously hidden secret room, concealed and apparently untouched for decades. The room is a time capsule, filled with eerie and obscure scientific equipment that points to a top secret project long thought destroyed, known only as "Project S." Ultimately, the truth of what Project S was . . . and what has happened in that room . . . will put Logan in the path of a completely unexpected danger. One of his most thrilling novels to date, The Forgotten Room is replete with veiled, fascinating history, and all the exhilarating action and science that are the hallmarks of a Lincoln Child blockbuster. The Complete Ivy Frost by Donald Wandrei Cover Art by Raymond Swanland Now available for pre-order! It may come as a surprise to some that Donald Wandrei wrote more mysteries than all his horror, fantasy, and science fiction tales combined. This volume collects all eighteen adventures of Wandrei’s ratiocinative detective I.V. Frost, who is ably assisted by his beautiful and tough female assistant, Jean Moray. A scientist and inventor, Frost has his own approach to solving mysteries. Rather than following the usual hard-drinking, trench-coated style of many of his contemporaries, Frost’s strategy was to mix the logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes with the technology of Lester Dent’s Doc Savage. In 2000, D.H. Olson edited a volume published by Fedogan and Bremer collecting the first eight of Frost’s adventures. A second volume of the remaining 10 tales was promised but never materialized. Hardcover $40 |

July 2015Coming soon! HE HAD A MONKEY ON HIS BACK—AND A DEAD WOMAN IN HIS BED! He’d been a promising piano prodigy, once. On the run from the law, desperate to prove his innocence, Ray also faces another foe, merciless and unforgiving: his fierce and growing craving for a fix... Ed McBain was one of the most popular mystery writers of all time, creator of the 87th Precinct series and recipient of the Mystery Writers of America’s Grand Master Award. SO NUDE, SO DEAD was his very first crime novel—and this is its first appearance in print in more than half a century. First publication in nearly 60 years! "I defy any reader to put this novel down once he starts it."—Richard S. Prather, best-selling author of THE PEDDLER Also featuring Die Hard, a bonus McBain short story from the pulps about the price of addiction, starring private eye Matt Cordell from THE GUTTER AND THE GRAVE September 2015 THE GIRL WITH THE DEEP BLUE EYES by Lawrence Block Cover art by Glen Orbik IN THE DEPTHS OF HER BLUE EYES, HE GLIMPSED—MURDER Cashed out from the NYPD after 24 years, Doak Miller operates as a private eye in steamy small-town Florida, doing jobs for the local police. He falls—and falls hard. Soon he’s working with her, against his employer, plotting a devious plan that could get her free from her husband and put millions in her bank account. But can they do it without landing in jail? And once heÕs kindled his taste for killing...will he be able to stop at one? First publication ever! The author of more than 100 novels including the bestselling A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES (which became the Liam Neeson movie), Lawrence Block is one of the most acclaimed living crime writers. Lawrence Block’s eight previous Hard Case Crime novels include THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART. |

It's A Man's World: Men's Adventure Magazines,
The Postwar Pulps Paperback - Coming August 11! by Adam Parfrey (Editor) It's a Man's World was first released in 2003 to critical acclaim and was featured on the cover of the Los Angeles Times Book Review and in the New York Times. This rich collection, filled with interviews, essays, and color reproductions of testosterone-heavy thirty-five-cent magazines with names like Man's Exploits, Rage, and Escape to Adventure (to name a few), illustrates the culture created to help veterans confront the confusion of jobs, girls, and the Cold War on their return from World War II and the Korean War. Contributions from the original men's magazine talent like Bruce Jay Friedman, Mario Puzo, and Mort Künstler bring the reader inside the offices, showing us how the writers, illustrators, editors, and publishers put together decades of what were then called "armpit slicks." Reproductions of original paintings from Norman Saunders, Künstler, and Norm Eastman are featured within, and Bill Devine's annotated checklist of the many thousands of adventure magazines is essential for collectors of the genre. The expanded paperback edition includes wartime illustrations and advertisements from mass-produced magazines that preview the xenophobia and racist ideas later seen throughout men's adventure magazines of the '50s and '60s. Paperback: 320 pages Publisher: Feral House; Revised Edition edition Product Dimensions: 8.7 x 0.9 x 11.7 inches List Price: $34.95 |

Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16, 2015 The Munsey Award
Every year, PulpFest recognizes the efforts of those
who work to keep the pulps alive for this and future generations
through its Munsey Award (pictured at left). Named
after Frank A. Munsey, the man who published the first
pulp magazine, this annual award recognizes an individual
who has given of himself or herself for the betterment
of the pulp community, be it through disseminating knowledge
about the pulps or through publishing or other efforts to preserve
and to foster interest in the pulp magazines we all love and
enjoy. Nominations for the 2015 Munsey are now being accepted.
All members of the pulp community, whether they plan to attend PulpFest
2015 or not, are welcome to nominate a deserving person for this
year’s award.
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
You can also nominate someone for the Rusty Hevelin
Service Award. Initiated in 2012, this award is designed
to recognize those persons who have worked long and
hard for the pulp community with little thought for individual
recognition. It is meant to reward especially good works,
and is thus reserved for only those individuals who are most
deserving.
Last year’s winners were J. Randolph Cox, who received the 2014 Munsey Award and J. Barry Traylor, recipient of the 2014 Rusty Hevelin Service Award. You can read about both gentleman by clicking here. If you have someone in mind that you feel worthy to receive either of these prestigious awards, please let us know. All members of the pulp community, excepting past winners of the Munsey, Hevelin, or Lamont Awards (which had been awarded by Pulpcon), are eligible. Please send the person’s name and a brief paragraph describing why you feel that person should be honored to Mike Chomko, 2217 W. Fairview Street, Allentown, PA 18104-6542 or to mike@pulpfest.com. The deadline for nominations is May 31, 2015. The recipient of the Munsey and/or Rusty Hevelin Service Award will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of recognized experts in the pulp field. The award will be presented on August 15th, during the convention’s evening programming. The Munsey Award was created by artist David Saunders, the son of legendary illustrator Norman Saunders. Dan Zimmer of The Illustrated Press and publisher of Illustration Magazine has produced a limited edition of thirty-six numbered and signed prints. The PulpFest Committee is indebted to both David and Dan for their generous support of our convention. |

Pulp Magazines Project
- Now online! Publishing legends The Black Mask (1920), Weird Tales (1923), and Amazing Stories (1926) are considered so “extremely rare and valuable” that the U.S. Library of Congress houses its collection of 277 issues in Washington, D.C.’s Rare Book and Special Collections Division—along with the personal libraries of Presidents, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, and one of only three known perfect copies of the Gutenberg Bible in existence. With its latest addition of 4 issues of The Black Mask (Aug. & Sept. 1920; Dec. 1921; and Apr. 1922), the Pulp Magazines Project has made all 3 classic titles available together—for the first time—in high-quality, cover-to-cover digital editions. Also available at the Pulp Magazines Project, new issues of the iconic “weird menace” pulp, Dime Mystery Magazine (Apr. 1938 and Sept. 1946); Adventure (Jul. 1, 1928; feat. Walt Coburn’s “The Man Who Hated Himself”); Western Story (Jul. 27, 1940); Detective Story (May 1938; feat. Zorro-creator Johnston McCulley’s “Thubway Tham’s Thothial Thecurity”); and histories of both The Black Mask (E.R. Hagemann; UCLA) and Dime Mystery Magazine (Emily Sisler; University of West Florida). The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

One of the most important and lasting components of any great exhibit is its catalog, so saddle up with us on our Indiegogo campaign, and take a look at the awesome rewards for donating to the publishing costs of the catalog.
