For those with families, it's also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation's top zoos. Movie theaters are also a short walk away. And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away. | The Atlantic Abomination [Kindle Edition] - Now available!
John Brunner (Author)
In The Atlantic Abomination, an exploratory expedition to the bottom of the ocean discovers the remnants of a long-lost civilization, and then, the enormous body of an alien being preserved for unknown millennia. An attempt to raise the body unleashes a horror beyond imagining as the creature revives from a long sleep and begins to exert control over men’s minds throughout the world. This is a classic SF horror story in the mode of John W. Campbell’s The Thing, the source material for SF thriller movies in the 1950s and again, via John Carpenter, in the 1980s.
For each generation, there is a writer meant to bend the rules of what we know. Hugo Award winner (Best Novel, Stand on Zanzibar) and British science fiction master John Brunner remains one of the most influential and respected authors of all time, and now many of his classic works are being reintroduced. For readers familiar with his vision, this is a chance to reexamine his thoughtful worlds and words, while for new readers, Brunner’s work proves itself the very definition of timeless.
Kindle Price: $4.61

| BLACK WINGS IV - Coming in February / March!
Edited by S. T. Joshi
“If anything has become evident in the first three volumes of the Black Wings series,” editor S. T. Joshi tells us in his Introduction to Black Wings IV, “it is that the Lovecraftian idiom is endlessly malleable, and suited to a variety of genres and subgenres. H. P. Lovecraft, although a strong proponent of what he called ‘weird fiction,’ himself spanned a surprisingly wide spectrum of genres in his own brief career, starting out as a writer of relatively conventional tales of the macabre and gradually expanding his scope to embrace the literature of cosmicism—a distinctive fusion of science fiction and horror that has become his signature contribution to the field. Today, we can find Lovecraftian elements in stories ranging from hard-boiled crime to pure fantasy, and this volume displays the extent to which motifs, themes, and imagery from Lovecraft’s tales can infiltrate tales that would otherwise have little relationship to one another.”
S. T. JOSHI is the author of The Weird Tale (University of Texas Press, 1990), The Modern Weird Tale (McFarland, 2001), and other critical and biographical studies. His award-winning biography, H. P. Lovecraft: A Life (Necronomicon Press, 1996), has been expanded and updated as I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft (Hippocampus Press, 2010).
Joshi has edited Lovecraft’s stories, essays, letters, and revisions, as well as works by Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Machen, Lord Dunsany, Algernon Blackwood, and other writers. His two-volume treatise, Unutterable Horror: A History of Supernatural Fiction (PS Publishing, 2012), has won a World Fantasy Award.

| Blood 'N' Thunder / Murania Press
The Blood 'N' Thunder Sampler
Now available!
The majority of people who visit this site are already familiar with Blood ‘n’ Thunder, the flagship publication of Murania Press. A good many are subscribers; some have been supporting the magazine since it was launched in 2002. But my little corner of cyberspace also receives a fair number of visitors who, while having a genuine interest in the subjects BnT covers, have never seen an issue. These include, for example, fans of vintage movies, who have purchased such Murania Press books as Cliffhanger Classics, Western Movie Roundup, and Distressed Damsels and Masked Marauders. Occasionally, when selling my wares at shows that cater to film buffs, those folks will casually flip through an issue and say, “Well, this looks interesting. I’ll have to try one some time.”
It’s primarily for such people that I’ve just put together The Blood ‘n’ Thunder Sampler, which reprints material from issues 24 through 29 as it originally appeared in the magazine’s pages. I could have produced a third volume of The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder, but the first two don’t accurately represent BnT in that they are smaller in size, with reset type and only a tiny sampling of the illustrations that grace each number. Quite frankly, I’m trying to appeal to potential subscribers and believe I’ll have better luck with a compilation replicating the actual pages of popular articles from the recent past.
I’ve deliberately chosen for the Sampler a number of articles whose subjects are such readily familiar characters as Zorro, Tarzan, The Shadow, Hopalong Cassidy, and The Green Hornet. Those pieces — some of BnT’s best, in my opinion — should prove attractive to readers who might be less enthusiastic about, say, my 22,000-word survey of The Popular Magazine, which is also reprinted in the Sampler. And I’m betting some folks who purchase issues sporadically will be delighted to buy for $19.95 (postage included) a jumbo-sized BnT containing the best material from six back issues that cost $11.95 each.
If you’re among those who’ve thought about trying BnT for a long time without ever “pulling the trigger,” take a chance on the Sampler and see what you’ve been missing. I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

The Outlaw of Torn
Before Tarzan... there was Norman of Torn.
His origin cloaked in mystery, he is misguided by an evil force... all the while building the most powerful army in England.
In English and Spanish!
Norman's story begins in 1243, during the power struggle between King Henry III and the KIng's brother-in-law, Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. At 17, Norman of Torn was the Greatest Swordsman in England, at 18 he had a large bounty on his head, and at 19 he was the leader of the most powerful and ruthless army in the land. And, the outlaw Norman of Torn becomes the most feared warrior of all England.
Raised and taught by the French fencing master, Jules de Vac, Norman was trained to be a simple, brutal, English-hating, killing machine. The only influence over him, besides de Vac, is a Priest who taught Norman his letters and chivalry towards women. But, the Priest was found mysteriously murdered in his cottage.
In another guise, that of Roger de Conde, Norman becomes involved with de Montfort's daughter, Bertrade – defending her against her and her father’s enemies. She notes in him a curious resemblance to the English King’s son and heir, Prince Edward.
As Norman begins to sense his true origins, de Vac turns against Norman – costing de Vac his life. The fencing master had kidnapped Norman as a child to serve as the vehicle of vengeance against the King. As de Vac dies, he reveals Norman's true origins. With his identity known, can Norman still be sure of winning the hand of Bertrade, daughter of Simon de Montfort, the King’s mortal enemy?
When Edgar Rice Burroughs first established himself as a writer with Under the Moons of Mars / A Princess of Mars in early1912, he was asked by his publisher, Thomas Metcalf of All Story Magazine, to write another story and to center it in medieval times. He did so, submitting The Outlaw of Torn. After three rewrites, it was still rejected by Metcalf. But he was told to not give up and to write something else. His next novel was Tarzan of The Apes which established Burroughs' writing career. The Outlaw of Torn was finally published as a five part serial in New Story Magazine in early 1914, but it wasn’t published in book form until 1927. This is one of only two historical novels Mr. Burroughs wrote, the other being I Am a Barbarian, set in Caligula's Rome and first published in 1967 – seventeen years after Mr. Burroughs' death.
Fourteen additional strips are currently available on the Burroughs comics website:
"Tarzan of the Apes" by Roy Thomas and Pablo Marcos, adapting the original Tarzan novels.

Now available in e-book PDF format!
Welcome to one of the largest and most ambitious projects ever attempted in the field of science fiction. In the pages of FUTURES PAST we will be covering, in detail, the birth and development of modern science fiction over its first 50 years – from 1926 to 1975. Designed in a yearbook format, each issue of FUTURES PAST will cover all the works, people, organizations and events in detailed chronological order.
Relive novels such as LAST AND FIRST MEN, GALACTIC PATROL, and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE all the way to more recent classics such as 1984, DUNE, and THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS.
Follow the early careers of legends such as Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Sturgeon, Asimov, Leinster and many others, year by year, story by story and novel by novel.
Learn about and even listen to hundreds of “old time radio” plays produced for shows such as DIMENSION X and BEYOND TOMORROW.
Attend the major conventions such as the first Worldcon held in New York City in 1939. Read all the details, the award winners and the activities. See photos and even video taken at some of the later conventions. Hear about it from the people who were there.
There will even be coverage of amateur clubs and fanzines over the years, beginning with THE COMET published in 1930 by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago.
Yes, every book, every magazine, every film, convention, and so much more! FUTURES PAST is dedicated to all those amazing people who helped to shape our modern world by giving us a sense of wonder, by showing us possible futures and addressing social issues long before they touched the mainstream, and by simply daring to ask, “what if…” Our goal at FUTURES PAST is to keep alive the people, works and memories of a great genre and introduce them to a whole new generation of readers, thinkers and dreamers.
When completed, this series will be the most comprehensive history of the field ever undertaken.
FUTURES PAST is available at the link below as a PDF download for $6.00, as well as a limited content review copy for FREE.
In the next few months we will be pursuing production of physical editions for sale as well.

| The Golden Age - Volume 2
This new hardcover book showcases some of the finest artworks
from the Golden Age of Illustration, circa 1880-1950.
Now available for pre-order!
This spectacular new book picks up where our previous volume "The Golden Age" left off. Following the same format as before, this new book features even more incredible artworks from the Golden Age of illustration, circa 1880 to 1950. This time out we feature 211 artists with 218 full page reproductions of original paintings, all photographed directly from the original art. Not a text book or a history book, this new volume is a stunning PICTURE book, filled to the brim with eye-popping visuals.
As the publisher of Illustration magazine, over the years I have been able to assemble an extensive archive of scans of original paintings from every corner of illustration history. Having produced 47 issues of the magazine so far, I now recognize that some of the material in my files and on my hard drives may never find their way into the magazine at all. An artist's history may be too scattered, or the quantity of original works and tear sheets are too rare, to support the "deluxe treatment" we usually give to our subjects (20 or 30 page articles are the norm for the magazine.) Rather than allow these stunning artworks to languish in the files, I've decided to pull together the "best of the best" of these photographs into two fantastic books. The first book was funded on Kickstarter in November and will be shipping in March. With your help, this new volume will be produced for shipment in July.

| OLD VENUS - Coming March 3!
by George R.R. Martin (Editor), Gardner Dozois (Editor)
Sixteen all-new stories by science fiction’s top talents, collected by bestselling author George R. R. Martin and multiple-award-winning editor Gardner Dozois
From pulp adventures such as Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Carson of Venus to classic short stories such as Ray Bradbury’s “The Long Rain” to visionary novels such as C. S. Lewis’s Perelandra, the planet Venus has loomed almost as large in the imaginations of science fiction writers as Earth’s next-nearest neighbor, Mars. But while the Red Planet conjured up in Golden Age science fiction stories was a place of vast deserts and ruined cities, bright blue Venus was its polar opposite: a steamy, swampy jungle world with strange creatures lurking amidst the dripping vegetation. Alas, just as the last century’s space probes exploded our dreams of Mars, so, too, did they shatter our romantic visions of Venus, revealing, instead of a lush paradise, a hellish world inimical to all life.
But don’t despair! This new anthology of sixteen original stories by some of science fiction’s best writers—edited by #1 New York Times bestselling author George R. R. THE PLACE OF HAIRY DEATH And Other Stories
Anthony M. Rud
Introduced by John Pelan
Dancing Tuatara Press #39
Perhaps best-known for having the cover feature in the very first issue of Weird Tales, Anthony M. Rud was one of the most dependable authors of the 1920s and 1930s for general adventure fiction. He visited the realm of the macabre on only a few occasions, but, whenever he did so the result was memorable. This is the first of two collections assembling all of his weird fiction, including two weird menace novels featuring his detective Jigger Masters. Prepare yourselves for not only "the tale of a thousand thrills", but other great material from Anthony M. Rud.

| | The Saint - The Complete Series - Coming May 26 in the U.S. and April 21 in Canada!
When sinners strike, call on THE SAINT! Modern-day Robin Hood. Wealthy man of mystery. Debonair rogue. Call Simon Templar what you will, but never cross THE SAINT. A timeless figure of adventure since his creation by Leslie Charteris in 1928, The Saint has thrilled adventure aficionados with his exploits in a variety of media, including novels, movies, and radio but nowhere was the dashing Mr. Templar more indelibly realized than in his 1960's television series, presented here in one outstanding collection: The Saint- The Complete Series.
Starring the perfectly-cast Roger Moore as Simon Templar, The Saint was a benchmark in the lifespan of the character, and a stepping stone to Moore taking on the role of an even more well-known man of action later in his career. Featuring thrilling acts of derring-do, beautiful places (and people), and a sly wit, this complete set of all 118 episodes of The Saint are a heavenly addition to your collection.
With guest star appearances by Oliver Reed (Tommy, Gladiator), Academy Award-winning actress Julie Christie (Darling, Doctor Zhivago), Donald Sutherland (The Dirty Dozen), Edward Woodward (TV's The Equalizer) a bevy of Bondian beauties (Goldfinger's Honor Blackman and Shirley Eaton, as well as Lois Miss Moneypenny; Maxwell), and many more. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the series, it's time to say Halo! to The Saint.

| Tales of the Dark Avenger: Star Witness in 3D - New Kickstarter project!
Tales of the Dark Avenger: Star Witness is the third film in my Tales of the Dark Avenger series. It's a great, pulpy thriller that starts with the murder of a would-be mob informant. A college student witnesses the murder and goes into hiding. The mob, the cops, a sleazy bounty hunter, a tough-talking P.I., and the masked vigilante known as the Dark Avenger engage in an action-packed race against time to find her.
This is intended to be the first full-length Dark Avenger 3-D feature, and it uses the process to it's maximum, with full, deep depth and wild, out of the screen 3-D effect shots. It's being shot using state of the art HD 3-D camcorders and will be released to theaters in both an anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3-D format and in a full digital 3D DCP, as well as being released on 3D Blu Ray.
The movie is scheduled to shoot from April 18-May 23, with a big karate fight sequence set to be shot after several additional weeks of rehearsal on June 20. It will film in and around the city of Philadelphia. Most of the actors are trained stage actors and all of them are very talented. I've worked with many of them before, so they're reliable, too.
The $25,000 budget I'm asking for is mostly for additional costuming, paying for specific locations--the mob boss's place, for instance--and props including the various weapons used in the film (guns, switchblades, assorted karate weapons). It will also be used for the various blood and gore effects in the movie. Finally, it will also be used to make up DCPs for theatrical showings and film festivals, as well as mastering and making the 3D Blu Ray edition. My plan is to get the film showings not only in film festivals, but by four-walling the movie, specifically targeting midnight showings as I intend for this to be a midnight movie type of production.

INTRODUCTION Darrell Schweitzer

SYNOPSIS
The Great Old Ones, Cthulhu, Nyarlathotep, Yog Sothoth, and the rest, so vividly described by H. P. Lovecraft, have lurked in the dim places of the Earth since the beginning of time. That is not dead, wrote the mad poet Abdul Alhazred, which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die.
You may reasonably wonder, then, why no one seemed to notice prior to the events in the Lovecraft stories. Was Cthulhu merely dreaming in sunken R’lyeh all this time, or did the dreams he sent out to mankind subtly influence, or pervert, human history? Were the outbreak of the Dunwich Horror and the resurrection of Charles Dexter Ward’s ancestor Joseph Curwen, both of which occurred in the 1920s, unique events, or have similarly dreadful things happened before? What were the Mi-Go of Yuggoth doing in the centuries before they were discovered in the Vermont hills by Henry Wentworth Akeley, as told in “The Whisperer in Darkness”?
This book proposes that such horrific events did occur down the centuries. They just have not been adequately chronicled until now. Esther Friesner proposes a unique explanation to the explosion of the island of Thera in the 2nd millennium B.C., which gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “big bang.” Keith Taylor illuminates what was up till now merely a sinister allusion, of how Nyarlathotep the Crawling Chaos appeared as a man in Egypt in the days of the pharaohs. Jay Lake and John Langan tell of very different encounters between ancient Romans and forces vaster and more ancient than any of the world’s empires. Darrell Schweitzer tells how survivors of the disastrous Peasants’ Crusade made an even more hideous pilgrimage to the Plateau of Leng. Don Webb reveals the very circumstances under which the English scholar John Dee translated the dreaded Necronomicon into English in the early 17th century. S. T. Joshi, John R. Fultz, Harry Turtledove, Richard Lupoff, Will Murray. W.H. Pugmire, and Lois Gresh all explore the subtle and insidious ways Lovecraft’s cosmic monsters have touched the lives of all of us. If our species still survives, it may be by sheer chance, and not for long, for the horrors are still there, still waiting for the day when the stars are right and they shall return to reclaim the Earth.

Two-and-a-half miles below the ice cap is Vostok, a six thousand square mile liquid lake, over a thousand feet deep, left untouched for more than 15 million years.
