In his Robin Hood trilogy; King of Sherwood,
Arrow of Justice and Freedom’s Outlaw, I.A. Watson brilliantly re-imagined
this classic adventure saga by setting it against England’s actual history.

into the origins of the legend and its colorful characters. Now Airship
27 Productions is thrilled to bring you this Special Fourth Volume as a
bonus finale to that trilogy.
“After we’d published the last book of Ian Watson’s trilogy, we thought
that was the end of our adventures with this great character,” explains Airship
27 Production’s Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “Then late last year,
Ian made mention that he had a bunch of short stories and essays still in
his files and would we be at all interested in looking at them. Upon
inspection, we knew immediately we had enough great material for yet another
book. Talk about an early Christmas gift.”

of the author’s in-depth essays on his critically acclaimed series and

The
Kickstarter campaign is now over and fully funded!
You can still order the book at the link above!
The first new Virgil Finlay art book in twenty
years will feature the collections of Robert Weinberg,
Doug Ellis, Glynn Crain and Robert K. Wiener.
Beginning today, a Kickstarter Campaign has been launched
to help defray costs in publishing THE COLLECTORS'
BOOK OF VIRGIL FINLAY an art book featuring
Virgil Finlay pieces from the collections of Robert
Weinberg, Doug Ellis, Glynn Crain, and Robert K. Wiener.
Virgil Finlay was the most accomplished and outstanding
line artist in American SF-Fantasy history. From 1936-1971
he illustrated an astounding amount of pulp fiction.
Beginning at WEIRD TALES, his interior art appeared
in 62 WT issues and he painted 19 covers. His run only ended
when the magazine did in 1954. He didn't stop there.
For years afterward his illustrations appeared in almost
every genre magazine: AMAZING, STRANGE STORIES, FAMOUS
FANTASTIC MYSTERIES, FANTASTIC NOVELS, FANTASTIC UNIVERSE,
IF, GALAXY and more. Through A. Merritt, he was hired as a
staff artist for THE AMERICAN WEEKLY magazine and eventually
worked for astrology magazines in the 1950s and 1960s.
In 1953, he won the Hugo Award for Best Interior Illustrator.
He did the dust jacket art for Arkham House Publishers THE OUTSIDER
AND OTHERS and ROADS. He also illustrated the hardcover of A.
Merritt's THE SHIP OF ISHTAR, worked for comics, and so much more.
About 2500 pieces have been catalogued. He passed away in 1971 after
a harsh bout with cancer. In 1996, he was awarded the Retro Hugo as
Best Professional Artist of 1945. In 2012, Virgil Finlay was also posthumously
inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
Slated for release at the World Fantasy Convention's
Virgil Finlay Centenary celebration on November 6-9, 2014,
THE COLLECTORS' BOOK OF VIRGIL FINLAY stands to be a
milestone in the history of sf-fantasy art publishing.
It will be the first to have Finlay art scanned in high resolution
directly from originals. It will contain 35 full color paintings
by the artist, the largest collection of Finlay's color
work ever assembled in print. It will also contain another
13 pages of additional color work, ranging from 2-color art pieces
done for the Doubleday Science Fiction Book Clubs' solicitations
to full-color cover roughs.
The Kickstarter campaign is schedule to end on Virgil
Finlay's actual Centenary Birthday: July 23, 2014.
The American Fantasy Press, Bob Garcia, and Bob Weinberg
Facebook pages will hold a virtual birthday party
for the artist with give-a-ways and more to celebrate. The

THE BLACK LIZARD BIG BOOK OF LOCKED-ROOM MYSTERIES: An empty desert,
a lonely ski slope, a gentleman’s study, an elevator car—nowhere
is a crime completely impossible.
Edgar Award–winning editor Otto Penzler has collected sixty-eight
of the all-time best impossible-crime stories from almost two hundred
years of the genre. In addition to the many classic examples
of the form—a case of murder in a locked room or otherwise inaccessible
place, solved by a brilliant sleuth—this collection expands the definition
of the locked room to include tales of unbelievable thefts and incredible
disappearances. Among these pages you’ll find stories with evocative
titles like “The Flying Death”, “The Man From Nowhere”, “A Terribly
Strange Bed”, and “The Theft of the Bermuda Penny”, not to mention
appearances by some of the cleverest characters in all of crime, including
Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, Georges Simenon’s Jules Maigret,
Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Dashiell Hammett’s Continental
Op, and many more.

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane
Collectors illustrated editions coming in 2015!
Bloodstone - Illustrated
by Patrick Jones
In the dark swamp, where toadmen croak and cower, slumbers a secret
relic of the days when creatures from the stars ruled the earth. In the
booty captured in a savage raid, Kane discovers a ring, a bloodstone which
is key to the power that lies buried, inactive but not dead, within the
forest. The Kane series of novels and stories by Karl Edward Wagner have
been recognized as dark classics of the sword and sorcery genre. Out of
print for years, these new editions will appeal to collectors and fans of
Karl Edward Wagner's fiction.
Dark Crusade
- Illustrated by Tom Kidd
Out of the blackness of an almost-forgotten past, the cruel cult
of Sataki has come to life again. Orted Ak-Ceddi, a daring outlaw, is its
prophet. He draws thousands of converts to his Dark Crusade—a design to
destroy mankind. His bloody cohorts conquer Shapeli, but they are defeated
when they drive to vanquish the southern kingdoms. Kane is the man who
can command the conquest. But Kane intends no final victory for the forces
of Darkness. . . .
Darkness Weaves
- Illustrated by Boco
Once Efrel was the beautiful consort of a king. Now she is a hideous
creature who lives only for revenge. She has allies to aid her, but only
Kane, the Mystic Swordsman, can rally her forces for battle. Only he
can deliver the vengeance she has devised in her knowledge of black magic.
Death Angel's
Shadow - Illustrated by Les Edwards
A quest that took Kane into forbidden wastelands, and tested his
killer skills against the most brutal forces ever summoned against a single
man. Kane knew he'd lost his strength, and perhaps his soul, when he entered
the erotic web of the vampire. . . .
Night Winds
- Illustrated by Grant Griffin
Where once the mighty Kane
has passed, no one who lives forgets. Now, down the trails of past battles,
Kane travels again. To the ruins of a devastated city peopled only by
half men and the waif they call their queen. The past, future, and present
are all one for Kane as he travels through the centuries.

Science Fiction
Now available
in e-book PDF format!
Welcome to one
of the largest and most ambitious projects ever attempted in the field of
science fiction. In the pages of FUTURES PAST we will be covering,
in detail, the birth and development of modern science fiction over its first
50 years – from 1926 to 1975. Designed in a yearbook format, each issue
of FUTURES PAST will cover all the works, people, organizations and events
in detailed chronological order.
Relive novels such as LAST AND FIRST MEN, GALACTIC PATROL,
and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE all the way to more recent classics
such as 1984, DUNE, and THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS.
Follow the early careers of legends such as Bradbury, Clarke,
Heinlein, Sturgeon, Asimov, Leinster and many others, year
by year, story by story and novel by novel.
Learn about and even listen to hundreds of “old time radio”
plays produced for shows such as DIMENSION X and BEYOND TOMORROW.
Attend the major conventions such as the first Worldcon
held in New York City in 1939. Read all the
details, the award winners and the activities. See
photos and even video taken at some of the later conventions.
Hear about it from the people who were there.
There will even be coverage of amateur clubs and fanzines
over the years, beginning with THE COMET published
in 1930 by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago.
Yes, every book, every magazine, every film, convention,
and so much more! FUTURES PAST is dedicated
to all those amazing people who helped to shape our modern
world by giving us a sense of wonder, by showing us possible
futures and addressing social issues long before they touched
the mainstream, and by simply daring to ask, “what if…”
Our goal at FUTURES PAST is to keep alive the people, works
and memories of a great genre and introduce them to a whole new
generation of readers, thinkers and dreamers.
When
completed, this series will be the most comprehensive history of
the field ever undertaken.
FUTURES PAST is available at the link below as a PDF download
for $6.00, as well as a limited content
review copy for FREE.
In the next few months we will be pursuing production of
physical editions for sale as well.

The Illustrated
Press
Walter Baumhofer by David Saunders
Pulp
art historian David Saunders returns with a lavish new hardcover art book
chronicling the life and work of Walter Baumhofer.
A
Progress Report!
The
book is currently en route from the printer, and should be shipping sometime
in mid-November.
|
In the world of the pulp magazines, the name of Walter
Baumhofer has always resonated with a solemn and respectful
gravitas. His masterful cover paintings from the
golden era of Dime Detective, Dime Mystery, Dime Western,
Adventure, Pete Rice, Doc Savage, and The Spider were among the
most iconic images in pulp art history. The design and execution
of his work combined an impressive combination of sensational
brushwork with a theatrical flair for composing striking scenes
of intriguing villains, rugged heroes, and steadfast women.
His creative ambitions elevated him from the low-paying field
of the pulp magazines into the respectable and higher-paying realm
of the slick magazine industry. When he quit the pulps, he left behind
a legacy of innovative design and high standards that the next generation
would struggle in his wake to attain. Although he is renowned for
his paintings of pulp magazine covers, the actual number of years he worked
in the field is but one chapter in a lifelong history of creative accomplishments.
That full story has never been told—until now.
Pulp and illustration art historian David Saunders has
written an insightful biography, chronicling the life
and work of this influential artist.
This is the consummate reference book on the artist, filled
with over 300 reproductions of original art, rare proof
sheets, working drawings, reference photos, as well as
historic family photos.
This book will be limited to 1000 copies. It is 224 pages,
9”x12”, full-color on premium glossy stock, hardbound
with dust jacket for $44.95.
Unlike previous
titles from The Illustrated Press, this book will not be offered
through Amazon, so it will never be offered at a discounted
price (unless you can find a "used" copy.)
If you want this book new, you
will have to buy it directly from The Illustrated Press
or your local comic shop.
In other words, don't worry about
seeing it listed on Amazon later for $26.
That is not going to happen!

The Illustrated Press
THE
GOLDEN AGE
Now available for pre-order
at Kickstarter.com!
This new hardcover book showcases some of the finest artworks from
the Golden Age of Illustration, circa 1880-1950.
From 1880 to 1950, during the "Golden Age" of illustration, spectacularly
talented artists produced hundreds of thousands of images for magazines,
calendars, books, advertisements, and much more. In the days before radio,
the movies, or television dominated the entertainment world, PRINT was the
preeminent media, and the illustrated magazine cover was at the center
stage of American visual culture.
Our new book celebrates this glorious period in art history, lavishly presenting
the work of 154 artists with 218 full page reproductions of original paintings,
some of the finest images produced during the period, all photographed
directly from the original art. Not a text book or a history book, this
new volume is a stunning PICTURE book, filled to the brim with eye-popping
visuals. If you are a fan of illustration art, this book was made for you!
As the publisher of Illustration magazine, over the years I have
been able to assemble an extensive archive of scans of original paintings
from every corner of illustration history. Having produced 46 issues of
the magazine so far, I now recognize that some of the material in my files
and on my hard drives may never find their way into the magazine at all.
The artist's history may be too scattered, or the quantity of original
works and tear sheets are too rare, to support the "deluxe treatment" we
usually give to our subjects (20 or 30 page articles are the norm for the
magazine.) Rather than allow these stunning artworks to languish in the
files, I've decided to pull together the "best of the best" of these photographs
into one fantastic book.

The Pulps
The Definitive Survey of a Re-Discovered American
Genre
from the Lesser Collection at the New Britain Museum of American Art.
Sensational paintings that gripped
the Depression-era public
with their themes of adventure, mystery, horror, sci-fi and damsels
in distress.
October 03 through December 26!
Now, for the first time, the world’s largest collection of Pulp
Cover Art is presented in a comprehensive touring exhibition of the
original paintings and the magazine covers they became.
The exhibition features Tarzan, The Shadow, Secret Agent X, The Mysterious
Wu-Fang, The Spider, Doc Savage, The Scorpion, The Whisperer, The
Black Mask, and The Lone Ranger.
Often described as unrepentant, unapologetic, unbridled and under-appreciated…
these are the vivid and daring period illustrations which became
the source of the visual language of today’s popular cinema (imaginative
movies like Avatar and sensual films like Y Tu Mamá También),
comic books, and multi-million copy video games.
In riveting and attention-grabbing imagery, the selected works reflect
the subconscious urges of an economically deprived and sexually
repressed generation. They set the stage decades ago for the expression
of today’s liberated consumer culture. Having influenced generations
of artists and writers, Pulp Cover Art has long been overlooked due
to its subject matter, genre clichés, and rarity of existing
examples.
This exhibition is the first in-depth look at these incredible yet misunderstood
works of art, some of which, due to their controversial content, have
not been seen in public since the Roaring Twenties. This definitive
survey of sweeping scope and range explores the subjects and influential
work of the artists who shaped American popular culture and the creative
landscape for generations to come.
Featuring stunning art by the masters of the genre – Tom Lovell, J.
Allen St. John, Virgil Finlay, Hannes Bok, Margaret Brundage, Rafael
de Soto, and Enoch Bolles – the exhibition is culled from the world’s
largest collection of Pulp Art at the New Britain Museum of American
Art and documents Depression-era fantasy as depicted on the covers
of popular literature.
The content recognizes the rebirth of interest in this genre demonstrated
by the surge in new publications, nostalgia events, collectors
and reproductions of original pulps by a growing number of new publishers.
As described by scholars and specialists who have studied the genre,
Pulp Art … “is more than simply an American art form. It is a state
of mind. Politically incorrect, shocking, offensive and obviously
fun…. It is unforgettable.”

Pulp Adventurecon
The next Pulp
Adventurecon is scheduled for November 1st, 2014.
That's a Saturday.
It remains a mildly magnificent show, wrapping
up the Year In Pulps
after weekend-long conventions like the Windy City
show and Pulpfest,
not to mention the little satellite shows across
the good old U.S. of A.
Keep those want lists ready, 'cuz we expect to have
the best show yet.
This year, we'll be joined by Robert Gould, son
of pulp illustrator John Fleming Gould, who thrilled readers
with his action-packed illustrations in The Spider and Dime Detective,
among other titles from Popular Publications. Robert and his brothers
manage the Bethlehem Art Gallery, which features the "Legacy of
Artist John Fleming Gould."
The Gould brothers, Robert, William and Paul continue the
tradition started in 1957 by John and Mary Gould with the
Bethlehem Art Gallery located at 58 Orrs Mills Rd. in Salisbury
Mills NY. The Gould brothers continue to meet and expand the
vision of their parents in providing New York State residents and
beyond with images that capture the history and beauty of the Hudson
River Valley and give the kind of high quality, friendly service
expected from a family owned and operated business with fifty years
experience.
Bordentown, New Jersey ... and specifically the
Ramada Inn ...
That oasis just off Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike
becomes a pulp collecting mecca every November.
Start planning to make your pilgrimage, especially
if you are one of those hold-outs yet to attend.
We'll have the usual fine display room jam-packed
with all sorts of stuff.
There's something for everyone, whether you collect
H.P. Lovecraft,
Dashiell Hammett, The Shadow and Doc Savage, Argosy
and Black Mask ...
the list cound quite possibly be endless ...

It all began with Dime Mystery Magazine in 1933. Its brand of
fiction came to be called Weird Menace. The mystery-and-menace formula
proved so successful that publisher Popular Publications threw all pretense
to the wind and issued a companion title unashamedly dubbed Terror Tales.
The slant, or formula, was simple: “Terror Tales wants the eerie atmosphere,
in which the menace is centralized against one character or one group
of characters, who, above all, are thoroughly terrified by their helpless
situation.”
|
|
If you recognize the motif, it’s classic Hollywood horror fare, still
in vogue today. When the blood-stained Terror Tales went into the black
and stayed there, Popular Publications decided to add Horror Stories. This
completed the triumvirate of terror edited by Rogers Terrill that dominated
the Weird menace genre all through the 1930s.
Blurbed as featuring “mystery-horror” stories instead of “mystery-terror,”
this new magazine was formulated differently than its companion titles. As
one editor told writers, “Horror Stories needs the bizarre and the horrible;
monsters, torture, butchery—anything that is really horrible. The mystery
angle is not so important here.”
In other words, damn the plot. Pour on the menace!
From year to year, the mix was refined. “No monsters” was one taboo that
came and went. Grand Guignol-style torture and sadism was turned up and
then dialed back down as complaints poured into Popular’s editorial offices
whenever an overeager writer went too far.
Horror Stories debuted in 1935. It immediately ran into trouble. After
the third issue, the magazine vanished from the stands for two full months.
It’s unclear why. But once it returned, Horror Stories kept going.
The same crew who filled the pages of the other terror titles got busy
keeping this offering on schedule. They comprised a Who’s Who of Popular
Publications pulp giants, yarn spinners such as Norvell W. Page, Frederick
C. Davis, Wyatt Blassingame, Paul Ernst, Arthur Leo Zagat, Francis James,
John H. Knox, and Arthur J Burks.
Once again, we’ve combed through innumerable issues to cull the best––or
should we say worst?––offerings torn from the torturous pages of Horror
Stories. These terrific tales have been handed to Milton Bagby, who delivers
them with gruesome gusto. Listen with the lights on. You might end up sleeping
the same way.... 6 hours - $11.99 Download / $23.98 Audio CDs

Robert Weinberg Presents
Vampires Overhead Audiobook by Alan Hyder
Read by Milton Bagby.
Liner Notes by Robert Weinberg
The June 1983 issue of the Twilight
Zone magazine contained a short but fascinating article by noted horror writer,
editor, fan, and collector, Karl Edward Wagner, on the 13 Best Horror Novels
ever published. But because Karl had such winding, obscure tastes he was
not able to fit all of his choices into one list. Instead he produced three—one
effort consisting of supernatural horror, one for science fiction horror,
and one for non-supernatural horror (mainstream fiction). His choices ranged
from the familiar to the forgotten. Last month we brought you The Maker
Of Shadows by Jack Mann from his supernatural listing.
|
|
As a follow-up to that
novel and a special Halloween treat, this month we present another title
from the Wagner list, this time from the Science Fiction category. One of
the famous Creeps series published in England, it is a unique horror story
that describes a vampire invasion from outer space. The monsters are definitely
“Vampires Overhead!”
The author of this forgotten classic of horror fiction was Alan Hyder.
As best as can be determined, Vampires Overhead was Hyder’s only work
of horror fiction. His name was not listed in the massive Bleiler Index
to Supernatural Fiction or Mike Ashley’s comprehensive guides to horror
writers of the past century. Even more telling, Hyder did not have any
fiction in the Creeps Short Story Library published by Philip Allan, of
which Vampires Overhead was part of the series. We were left to conclude
that Hyder was a one-idea wonder who sold his one spectacular story to the
Creeps series and then left the publishing world forever.
The concept for Vampires Overhead is a unique one and definitely something
out of science fiction, not fantasy or the supernatural. The Earth is
overrun by a cloud of monsters from outer space. These monsters, numbering
in the hundreds of millions, are some sort of cosmic vampire bat and they
arrive on Earth hungry for blood. No explanation is given for the origin
of the bats or how they survive in outer space. They just are. Vampires
Overhead is a cosmic disaster novel, very much similar to Garrett Serviss’s
The Second Deluge, published nearly thirty years earlier. But where Serviss
has the Earth engulfed by a gigantic cosmic water cloud and most everyone
drowned, Hyder imagines a swarm of near indestructible bats attacking humanity.
It is an unforgettable novel of interstellar menace! Read by Milton Bagby.

should we say worst?––offerings torn from the torturous pages of Horror
Stories. This exciting book has been beautifully reformatted for easy
reading as an eBook and are of highest quality. $2.99.
Vampires Overhead by Alan Hyder
From out of space, they came... riding on a comet of doom. In numbers
too mammoth to conceive, they fed upon the blood of the living. Khaenealler’s
Comet appeared in the heavens, bringing with it a strange glow, mysterious
weather changes and vampires... filthy, loathsome creatures that could not
be stopped. Three survivors of an annihilated world, Garry Garrington, his
comrade-in-arms Bingham and the lovely young Janet, scour the English countryside
seeking some place of safety from the horrors that have descended from above.
This rarely-seen legend of horror, originally published in London in 1935,
is now reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.
Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds
#20: Black Lightning
This is the first issue in the Dusty Ayres series. It all started
here! These are science-fiction stories of a near-future war that has ravaged
America. The Black Invaders, led by an Asian warlord known as "Fire-Eyes",
are bent upon world domination, have conquered all of Europe and are now
on the American continent. Captain Dusty Ayres, ace pilot for the U.S. Air
Defense flies in the Silver Flash, an advanced craft of his own design. With
his two pals Curly Brooks and Biff Bolton, they battle some of the most
diabolical mad scientists and their weirdest inventions. These exciting stories
took over the Battle Birds magazine from June 1934 through the July/August
issue of 1935, changing the magazine name to Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds.
And now Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds is back, reissued for today’s readers
in electronic format. $2.99.
Battle Birds #42 October 1941
Beginning in 1932, Battle Birds brought readers a thrilling main
story, referred to as a “novel”, that featured a rotating cast of main
characters like The Three Mosquitoes and Smoke Wade. After nineteen issues,
just over a year and a half after its debut, the magazine began to feature
the air adventures of Dusty Ayres, and the magazine became officially titled
Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds. This lasted until the summer of 1935
when the magazine folded after thirty-one issues. But Battle Birds wasn't
finished; it would return. In early 1940, Battle Birds reappeared on the
newsstands. But now the focus of the stories was on the conflict that
would soon be known as World War II. This resurrected Battle Birds lasted
for 26 issues until May 1944. And now Battle Birds is back, reissued for
today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.
Sports Novels Baseball Classics
Sports thrills, ripped from the burning pages of one of the all-time
great sports magazines of the 1930s, Sports Novels! Magazines containing
sports fiction were one of the staples of the pulp magazines, becoming popular
in the early 1920s and by the mid-1930s there were over two dozen titles
on the newsstands. In early 1937, Popular Publications decided to enter
the lucrative field of the sports fiction magazines. The April-May 1937
issue of Sports Novels hit the newsstands in late March, featuring an eye-catching
baseball cover. For the next fifteen years, each issue featured stories
of football, boxing, baseball, hockey, track, basketball, tennis and hockey.
Nearly every sport imaginable was represented in the long-running magazine.
It continued publishing for a total of eighty-five issues until the April
1952 issue, when pulp magazines were in their waning days. Vintage Sports
Novels are now being reissued for today’s readers in electronic format.
$2.99.
Horror Stories: Arthur J. Burks
Horror Stories! The dark companion to Dime Mystery Magazine. Created
to showcase stories too horrible for Terror Tales. The third of the triumvirate
of fear pulps. This brand of fiction came to be called Weird Menace. The
mystery-and-menace formula proved so successful that publisher Popular Publications
produced Dime Mystery Magazine, Terror Tales and Horror Stories. These three
dominated the Weird Menace genre all through the 1930s. Blurbed as “mystery-horror”
stories instead of “mystery-terror,” Horror Stories was formulated differently
than its companion titles. Damn the plot. Pour on the menace! This eBook
contains a collection of stories from the pages of Horror Stories magazine,
all written by Arthur J. Burks, reissued for today’s readers in electronic

Science fiction fanzines to
be digitized as part of major UI initiative
The University of Iowa Libraries has announced a major digitization
initiative, in partnership with the UI Office of the Vice President for
Research and Economic Development. 10,000 science fiction fanzines will
be digitized from the James L. “Rusty” Hevelin Collection, representing
the entire history of science fiction as a popular genre and providing the
content for a database that documents the development of science fiction
fandom.
Hevelin was a fan and a collector for
most of his life. He bought pulp magazines from newsstands as a boy in the
1930s, and by the early 1940s began attending some of the first organized
science fiction conventions. He remained an active collector, fanzine creator,
book dealer, and fan until his death in 2011. Hevelin’s collection came
to the UI Libraries in 2012, contributing significantly to the UI Libraries’
reputation as a major international center for science fiction and fandom
studies.
Science fiction fanzines are amateur publications made by individuals or
groups that discuss books, films, politics, and many other public and
personal matters. They were initially written for a limited audience and
distributed via personal connections and gatherings, beginning in the
1930s in the United States and Europe. Within the pages of science fiction
fanzines lies previously inaccessible and unstudied primary documentation
of the social history and popular culture of the 20th century.
Science fiction fanzine writers were intimately involved with many aspects
of science fiction literature during the golden years of its development.
The list of names is impressive: Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C.
Clark, Robert Bloch, Leigh Brackett, Frederik Pohl, Harlan Ellison, Joe
Haldeman, Michael Moorcock, Roger Zelazny, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert
Silverberg, Roger Ebert, George R.R. Martin, Forrest Ackerman, and many
others were actively involved in fanzine culture.
“Some of the earliest works by these writers can be found in Rusty’s collection
of fanzines, along with important writing from all of the major fans who
created this new form of popular culture,” says Peter Balestrieri, curator
of science fiction and popular culture collections.
The fanzine portion of the Hevelin Collection, numbering approximately 10,000
fanzines, will be digitized in its entirety.
“Nothing on this scale has been attempted with fanzines before, and we
are thrilled to be able to finally address the concern we have been hearing
for years from fans and scholars, to find a way to enable them to discover
exactly what these pieces contain,” says Greg Prickman, head of special
collections.
Once digitized, the fanzines will be incorporated into the UI Libraries’
DIY History interface, where a select number of interested fans (up to 30)
will be provided with secure access to transcribe, annotate, and index
the contents of the fanzines. This group will be modeled on an Amateur
Press Association (APA) structure, a fanzine distribution system developed
in the early days of the medium that required contributions of content from
members in order to qualify for, and maintain, membership in the organization.
The transcription will enable the UI Libraries to construct a full-text
searchable fanzine resource, with links to authors, editors, and topics,
while protecting privacy and copyright by limiting access to the full set
of page images.

Steeger Properties
Copyrights to nearly 150 pulp magazine titles obtained!
Steeger Properties, LLC, has added
to a growing collection of pulp fiction magazines by acquiring the copyrights
to nearly 150 pulp magazine titles that were originally published by Popular
Publications, Inc. Now claiming ownership to most of the pulp stories and
characters published by both Popular Publications and The Frank A. Munsey
Company, Steeger Properties, LLC, has accrued the copyrights to an estimated
6,000 issues and 30,000 stories.
“We’re proud to represent these thousands of stories and plan on introducing
them to a whole new audience in as many mediums as possible,” said Matthew
Moring, Manager of Steeger Properties, LLC, and Publisher of Altus Press.
Pulp fiction began in 1896 with Frank A. Munsey’s The Argosy Magazine. The
192-page magazine had untrimmed edges and the stories within the pages
offered entertaining genre fiction ranging from adventure and mysteries
to science fiction and westerns and everything in between. In six years,
the magazine went from publishing a few thousand copies per month, to well
over half a million copies. Argosy’s success was partially thanks to the
variety of recurring characters it published, such as Tarzan and Zorro.
Popular Publications, Inc.—the most successful pulp magazine publisher of
its time—published such well-known authors as Raymond Chandler, Ray Bradbury
and Erle Stanley Gardner within the pages of its own titles. In 1942, Popular
Publications acquired The Frank A. Munsey Company.
Fast forward to 2014. While the popularity of pulp fiction has fluctuated
over the years, the stories within the pages are classic fiction and
are as influential to American pop culture as ever. They are fast paced,
well-written short stories and novels featuring classic characters. There’s
a huge audience that hasn’t had contact with these stories. By reintroducing
them using today’s technology, these classic hard-boiled detective, mystery,
western, and science fiction stories will be available for generations
to come.
The Steeger Properties, LLC, catalog is available for licensing in all
media.
About Steeger Properties, LLC
Steeger Properties, LLC, has accrued the copyrights to 30,000 pulp fiction
stories and has plans to share its collection with a whole new audience.
