The Complete Cases of Vee Brown, Volume 1
by Carroll John Daly
Introduction by Ed Hulse
Vivian “Vee” Brown leads two lives.
Delicate-looking and small in stature, he lacks physical strength and endurance.
But that doesn’t prevent him from being an effective special operative to
the Manhattan District Attorney. In this capacity he often ignores the legal
niceties of due process, shooting first and asking questions later. Many
citizens view him as a hair-trigger gunman whose promiscuous killings make
him little better than the vicious criminals he hunts. In his other life,
Brown lives in a luxurious Park Avenue penthouse, paid for not with his modest
civil-servant salary, but with the royalties he earns as a phenomenally successful
composer of sentimental songs—a sideline he keeps secret. Both the police
and the underworld refer to him as a “Killer of Men.” But the denizens of
Tin Pan Alley know him as “Master of Melodies,” the prince of pop music.
The creation of Carroll John Daly, father of the hard-boiled private
eye, Vee Brown plied his trade in the page of Dime Detective, the classic
crime pulp that was second only to the legendary Black Mask in its impact
on the genre.
Contains the following stories:
“The Crime Machine”
“The Sixth Bullet”
“The Curtain of Frost”
“The Call to Kill”
“The Death Master”
“Murder at Midnight”
“As Midnight Strikes”
“The Red Death”
“The Price of Silence”

The Complete Cases of The Marquis of
Broadway, Volume 1
by John Lawrence
Introduction by Ed Hulse
NYPD Lieutenant Martin Marquis and the
officers of his hand-picked Broadway Squad are the toughest, most vicious
cops in pulp-fiction history. “The Marquis,” as he is called along Manhattan’s
Main Stem, is trim and dapper, with a weathered face and deep-set blue eyes.
In marked contrast to the average plainclothes officer, he dresses like
one of New York’s “swells,” generally showing up at crime scenes clad in
smartly angled derby hat, black silk scarf, black kid gloves and shoes,
dark suit, and ankle-length black Chesterfield coat. His appearance notwithstanding,
the Marquis is practically a gangster with a badge, only marginally less
corrupt than the underworld figures he pursues. Members of the Broadway Squad
share his casual morality and frequently abuse their authority not only for
financial gain but personal satisfaction as well.
One of the most unusual collection of stories published in
any crime pulp, the Marquis of Broadway series was written by John Lawrence,
a former stockbroker whose literary career, while relatively brief, deserves
more recognition than it has received to date. Most of Lawrence’s best yarns,
including those featuring the Marquis and his Broadway Squad, first appeared
in the pages of Dime Detective, the prestigious crime pulp second only to
the legendary Black Mask in its impact on the genre.
Contains the following stories:
“Broadway Malady”
“Live Man’s Shoes”
“Escape Mechanism”
“Natural Killer”
“Boomerang Blastout”
“Body About Town”
“Witness! Witness!”
“Twelve Morticians Named Green”
“Death in Round Numbers”

The Knight of Darkness crushes
supercrime in thrilling pulp novels by Walter B. Gibson and Theodore Tinsley

Celebrating
the 75th anniversary of Batman's debut, Sanctum Books re-solicits the FIRST
EDITION of the book
that rewrote the history of BATMAN!
First, a powerful new underworld kingpin crosses swords with The
Shadow in "Lingo," one of Walter Gibson's all-time masterpieces which introduces
The Shadow's customized yellow boomerang which inspired the Batarang. Then,
in "Partners of Peril" by Theodore Tinsley, Lamont Cranston investigates
chemical syndicate murders in the landmark thriller that was adapted by Bill
Finger and Bob Kane as Batman's debut adventure in Detective Comics #27.
"With this astonishing discovery, Anthony Tollin and Will Murray have rewritten
the history of Batman," Alter Ego-editor Roy Thomas proclaimed. "We always
knew that Batman was inspired by The Shadow—we just didn't know how much
he was inspired by The Shadow!" This extra-length volume also reprints Tinsley's
"The Grim Joker," a 1936 tale introducing a clown-faced crime boss called
The Joker. Popular culture historian Will Murray documents the Shadowy origins

was adapted as the first Batman story. This classic pulp collection also

"Never trust a woman." Sammy quickly forgets that adage when he and
Lucky Jones are enticed to transport Sally Lavender on the Blue Goose
to somewhere east of the Celebs, to the shunned isle of Konga, shunned
because it is inhabited with headhunters-and ghosts!
The Isle of the Meteor
A forgotten chart provides Sammy a clue to the location of an island in
the South Seas that centuries ago was struck by an enormous meteorite of
solid gold. Cooking up a scheme to acquire these untold riches, Sammy embarks
to locate the island-only to discover that the gold is not simply for the
taking.
A Whisker of Buddha
Singapore Sammy and Lucky Jones are hired to steal a revered whisker of
the Buddha himself from a well-guarded temple in the Cambodian interior.
Word of their quest gets out; quickly a race is on to see which pursuing
party will acquire the sacred object first.

On the run from the law, a gangster’s girl and two hoods stop to
wait for the boss
In a forgotten café somewhere in the middle of the country, a blonde
in a raincoat bursts through the door. She’s got a pistol in her hand
and two killers at her back, and she wants a bottle of rye. Dotty and
her friends aren’t going anywhere. They’ll be here until Rusty shows up.
Rusty the killer. Rusty the thief. Rusty the love of Dotty’s young life.
They’ll be here until Rusty steps through the door, but Rusty might not
be on his way.
In this tight, explosive short story, a gun moll transforms into the heroine
of a hard-boiled Greek tragedy. One of the most popular pieces of short
fiction ever to appear in the pages of Black Mask magazine, “Waiting for
Rusty” remains a remarkable work, as powerful and surprising as a sucker
punch to the back of the skull.

Black Mask: STRANGE DETECTIVE MYSTERIES - In the works!

into popular culture TV imagination). The pitch is going directly to Rodriguez.
A full pitch for the show was also presented to an American-based stop-frame
animation studio currently producing a major film in this amazing updated
technology, and they love STRANGE DETECTIVE Mysteries, starring our fearless
hero, Harry Strange, detective extraordinary.
Also in the works, a documentary on the men who have kept the pulps alive
and nurtured these great and almost lost art forms during the last 30 years

The silent-era movie serial——routinely dismissed, overlooked or
undervalued by film historians——finally gets the attention it deserves in
this meticulously researched, lovingly written book.
Drawing on the well-established conventions of pulp fiction and blood-and-thunder
stage melodrama, the motion-picture chapter play thrilled viewers of all
ages and, more importantly, made weekly moviegoing a habit for millions of
Americans during the Teens and Twenties.
Ed Hulse, editor and publisher of Blood ‘n’ Thunder magazine, opens this
deluxe trade paperback with a 25,000-word overview on the silent serial’s
development, debunking old myths and putting the chapter play in its proper
historical context. The bulk of the book is devoted to the output of Pathé
Exchange, the production/distribution entity that employed the most popular
stars (including serial queens Pearl White, Ruth Roland, and Allene Ray)
and released the most successful and influential serials (The Perils of Pauline,
The Exploits of Elaine, The Lightning Raider, The Timber Queen, and The
Green Archer, to name a few). This company history has been impeccably
sourced and even features first-hand recollections from people who were
part of serial-making in those halcyon days.
Distressed Damsels and Masked Marauders has more than 200 illustrations:
rare stills, posters, advertisements, lobby cards, candid on-set photos,
even frame captures from the film themselves. Most of these have never been
published.
Hulse has recaptured this remarkable period in film history in painstaking
detail, and even those film buffs or pulp fans with limited interest in
serials will be fascinated by this evocative chronicle of the early chapter
plays.

Murania Press
Blood 'N' Thunder Special Edition
(#38-#40)
Now
available!
The largest
single issue of a fanzine ever published!
This Special Edition has three times the pages of a normal Blood 'n' Thunder
(less those that would go toward duplicating ads and front matter, of
course).
Among the departments you'll find a preview of PulpFest 2014; coverage
of a 1936 movie adapting Fred MacIssac's Dime Detective character The Rambler;
an essay on the first serial adapted from a comic strip, 1934's Tailspin
Tommy; and advice from noted SF editor Robert "Doc" Lowndes on cracking the
pulp-magazine market.
Feature articles cover a number of favorite characters, including Doc
Savage and G-8. Scholar Nathan Madison is on hand with a fascinating treatise
on "Yellow Peril" pulp fiction. Larry Latham joins BnT's Writers Brigade
with a survey of dime novels and nickel weeklies that became full-fledged
pulp magazines. Film historian Richard W. Bann returns with a behind-the-scenes
look at the production of 1941's The Maltese Falcon, and BnT editor Ed Hulse
revisits the Thirties film appearances of The Shadow with newly uncovered
information on the 1931-32 Universal featurettes that introduced the character
to moviegoers. There are facsimile reprints of short stories from rare early
issues of Adventure and The Popular Magazine.
Finally, as a bonus, this issue includes an entire book-length novel (85,000
words) first published in 1918 issues of All-Story Weekly: Randall Parrish's
eerie adventure The Strange Case of Cavendish, which was made into a 1919
cliffhanger serial titled The Lion Man.

The Special Edition counts as issues 38 through
40 for subscribers and includes all the material previously announced for

The long-awaited Blood ‘n’ Thunder
Guide to Pulp Fiction, many months in
preparation, is now available from Murania Press.
A greatly revised and expanded version of
2007’s Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Collecting
Pulps, this massive new book has been positioned
as more of a reference work than a mere manual
for hobbyists. It’s a complete history of the
pulp magazine (told in more detail than ever attempted
by a single author) wrapped up in one-volume. Its 2007
predecessor had 226 pages and close to 400 pulp-cover
reproductions. The new Guide to Pulp Fiction has 414 pages
and 700 cover repros, along with a smattering of original
cover paintings.
Chapters from the old Guide have been extensively
reworked. New chapters have been added
on Spicy pulps, sports pulps, love pulps, and
war-and-aviation pulps. Also, two new appendices have
been created for pulp-fiction readers who don’t
collect the vintage magazines. One appendix
gives basic information on the best small-press reprint
publishers, while the other lists the most important
anthologies of pulp stories in various genres.
The Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction
is priced at $29.95, which includes shipping
to domestic U.S. buyers. However, Murania
Press is also making the book available at a
20 percent discount to anybody who purchases it
along with a one-year subscription to Blood ‘n’
Thunder. This special offer has its own page on the
Murania Press site and is available to those who
renew or extend their subscriptions as well.

'Flash Gordon' Movie in the Works at Fox - In the works!
Twentieth Century Fox has closed a deal acquiring the movie rights
to Alex Raymond’s classic science fiction pulp magazine hero Flash Gordon.
It took more than a year, but veteran Producer John Davis (Chronicle, and
the upcoming Man From U.N.C.L.E.) acquired the rights from the Hearst Corporation
and hired George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum) to write a treatment.
Raymond’s popular comic strip, which debuted in 1934, spawned three movie
serials starring Buster Crabbe in the 1930s, and a campy big screen movie
in 1980. Since then there have been numerous other attempts to find
the right approach to bring Flash back to the big screen including a proposed
2004 version from Mummy director Stephen Sommers (see "'Flash Gordon' Film
in the Works").
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Davis will produce the new Flash
Gordon project at Fox, and he has hired J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to
write the screenplay. Payne and McKay recently finished a script for
Star Trek 3. Previously they wrote an adaptation of Paul Guinan and
Anina Bennett’s graphic novel Boilerplate as well as an unproduced script
for a Micronauts movie.

JUSTICE INC - Coming in August!
The Shadow, Doc Savage and The
Avenger
An event 75 years in the making! Stretched across time, The
Shadow, Doc Savage, and The Avenger meet for the first time in Justice,
Inc. #1! With the stakes this high, it will take three heroes to fight together
as the Justice, Inc.! In time for Dynamite's 10th Anniversary celebration,
Justice, Inc. #1 will be released in August 2014 and is written by Michael
Uslan with interiors by Giovanni Timpano. The Original Avenger has
been the star of his own Justice, Inc. series and previously drawn by some
of the greatest artists in comics: Jack Kirby! Joe Kubert! Kyle Baker! And
now joining those illustrious ranks of illustrators, come covers by Alex
Ross, Francesco Francavilla, Stephen Segovia, Ardian Syaf and Gabriel Hardman!
"Doc Savage inspired the creation of Superman. The Shadow directly inspired
the creation of Batman. The Avenger sparked the creation of a multitude
of... Well... Avengers! What an honor to write a story starring them all!
It's always been beyond my comprehension how Street & Smith pulp magazines
and comics never ever in 75 years teamed the three of them up! Can you imagine
if up till now DC had never crossed/over Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman?
Could you grasp Marvel never teaming up Captain America, Sub-Mariner and
The Human Torch? I love history! And THIS, fellow fan-boys, IS history! I
am so excited that this task has fallen to me. I love these characters and
knew Walter Gibson, creative force behind The Shadow. I feel a personal obligation
to him to do the very best job I can, and I'm grateful to Nick Barrucci and
the Dynamite team for making this happen at last!" - Michal Uslan, writer
of Justice, Inc.
"Michael is one of the most inspired and versatile writers in the industry
with his experience in comics, film and prose," says Dynamite CEO / Publisher
Nick Barrucci. "Michael doesn't write many series due to his schedule, but
when he does, he puts all of his energy and a passion that few can bring
to a series, and it shows. This IS a historic cross-over, and we couldn't
be more pleased that Michael is the person spearheading the series.
And the best part is that Michael will use his PR machine to help promote
the series every issue in stores for retailers to help them have higher
sell through as more fans will know of the series. And nothing is
more exciting than having a series reach as many readers as possible."
In Justice, Inc. #1, an airliner vanishes without a trace! It's the crisis
that brings together, in a historic team-up for the first time ever, Street
& Smith's super-star trinity: The Shadow! Doc Savage! The Avenger! 75
years in the making, JUSTICE, INC. begins here, spawned by a horrific tragedy
of death and destruction secretly orchestrated by some of the most powerful
and unexpected villains in the history of the pulps! Chapter 1 (of 6): "The
Time Machine!"
Justice, Inc. #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' June
Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty
market, and slated for release in August 2014. Comic book fans are
encouraged to reserve copies of Justice, Inc. #1 with their local comic book
retailers. Justice, Inc. #1 will also be available for individual customer
purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark
Horse Digital.
Michael Uslan is the originator and Executive Producer of the Batman/Dark
Knight movie franchise. Most recently, Uslan wrote the critically-acclaimed
story, "Silent Knight, Unholy Knight" in BATMAN BLACK & WHITE, as well
as Dynamite Comics' "The Shadow/ Green Hornet: Dark Nights."

In the spirit of Warhammer 40,000 and the Horus Heresy! Stripped
of his authority by the Emperor of Mankind and assigned to duty in deepest
space for failing to prevent the greatest robbery in history, former Colonel
Ezekial Tamerlane believes his career as a soldier is over. But strange

THE MAN FROM MARS by Fred Nadis - Coming in July!
Who is Ray Palmer? Chances are you either don’t know or—if
you’re a comic book fan—you think of DC Comics character, The Atom.
Although he was the namesake for one, Ray Palmer—the man—was no superhero.
Standing at just four feet tall (the result of a crippling childhood injury),
he hardly cut an imposing figure. But what he lacked in height,
he would make up for in his legacy.
THE MAN FROM MARS: Ray Palmer’s Amazing Pulp Journey by Fred Nadis is
the first-ever biography of the man who shaped science fiction and changed
our perception of the universe as we know it. As the editor of
the groundbreaking pulp magazine Amazing Stories, as well as Fate,
Mystic and Flying Saucers, Palmer made invaluable contributions
to popular culture, like jumpstarting the flying saucer craze; popularizing
“hollow earth” theory; and publishing stories by some of sci-fi’s
biggest players, including Ray Bradbury and the first professional
story by a young Isaac Asimov.
Ray Palmer is the godfather of every person who “wants to believe” in
the X-Files, owns the complete Battlestar Galactica box set, or has
whiled way hours arguing Kirk versus Picard. In THE MAN FROM MARS,
Nadis paints a portrait as sensational as the covers of the pulp
magazines to which Palmer dedicated his life, and shows us how one
man’s vision of sci-fi’s potential created the “geek” we know today.
Softcover, 6x9, 304 pages, $16.95
THE MAN FROM MARS is solicited in the
May PREVIEWS
(Available April 30).
The Diamond Item Code is MAY141832.

The New Mammoth Book Of Pulp Fiction - Now available!
Edited by Maxim Jakubowski
32 Thrilling Hardboiled Stories by Dashiell Hammett, Donald E.
Westlake, Mickey Spillane, John D. MacDonald, Jim Thompson and many more.
fiction has been looked down on as a guilty pleasure, but it offers the
perfect form of entertainment: the very best storytelling filled with action,
surprises, sound and fury. In short, all the exhiliration of a roller-coaster
ride. The 1920s in America saw the proliferation of hundreds of dubiously
named but thrillingly entertaining pulp magazines in America – Black Mask,
Amazing, Astounding, Spicy Stories, Ace-High, Detective Magazine, Dare-Devil
Aces. It was in these luridly-coloured publications, printed on the cheapest
pulp paper, that the first gems began to appear. The one golden rule for
writers of pulp fiction was to adhere to the art of storytelling. Each story
had to have a beginning, an end, economically-etched characters, but plenty
going on, both in terms of action and emotions. Pulp magazines were the TV
of their day, plucking readers from drab lives and planting them firmly in
thrilling make-believe, successors to the Victorian penny dreadfuls of writers
such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens. These stories exemplify
the best of crime and mystery pulp fiction – its zest, speed, rhythm, verve

PRIDE OF THE MOHICANS - Now available!
PRIDE OF THE
MOHICANS Arrives in Trade Paperback!
Four of Adventure Fiction’s Brightest Lights Bring Us New Stories
of Hawkeye in Action!
White Rocket Books, a leading publisher of New Pulp, Adventure
Fiction and Nonfiction, proudly announces the release in trade paperback
format of PRIDE OF THE MOHICANS!
It is the year 1756 and the American Colonies are engulfed in the conflict
known as the French and Indian War. Into the frontier lands west of the
Hudson come three men, last of a vanishing people, heroes for these turbulent
times, determined to fight for what is right, for those in need-- and against
the selfish and cruel forces that seek to exploit and destroy America in
its infancy. Wise Chingachgook... fierce Uncas... and a man known by
many names: La Longue Carabine... the Pathfinder... Nathaniel Poe...
He is HAWKEYE.
Here are four rousing, all-new tales of that dynamic trio who brought
justice to the wilderness of Colonial America, by four of the most celebrated
names in all of adventure storytelling: Jim Beard (Monster Aces; Sgt
Janus, Spirit Breaker); Ron Fortier (Captain Hazzard; Brother Bones); Frank
Schildiner (Tales of the Shadowmen; The Avenger) and I. A. Watson (Sherlock
Holmes, Consulting Detective; Robin Hood, King of Sherwood).
Created and Edited by Van Allen Plexico (Blackthorn; Gideon Cain), this
all-new anthology is based upon The Last of the Mohicans novel by James
Fenimore Cooper and the 1992 film starring Daniel Day-Lewis and directed
by Michael Mann.
“The 1992 film is one of my all-time favorite movies,” says Plexico, “and
Hawkeye and his adopted father and brother seemed to me obvious choices
to bring into the world of New Pulp and Adventure Fiction. When these four
great creative minds signed on to write their adventures, I knew we had
a huge winner. Throw in a gorgeous cover painting by the celebrated artist
Laura Givens and you have a can’t-miss package for fans of historical action
and adventure—and of great stories in general.”
“The Last of the Mohicans is my favorite American literary classic,” adds
Fortier. “I was instantly captivated by the story of three men sharing amazing
adventures in a woodland empire long lost in our country's past. Having
the opportunity to write Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas has been one of
the most rewarding experiences of my writing career. I hope the readers
feel that enthusiasm and enjoy the ride.”
“Easily one of the most romantic historical dramas ever made,” says Beard
of the film. “It’s also very easy to envision earlier adventures of Nathaniel
and his father and brother the moment they run on-screen, and my mind started
imagining the possibilities. I hope I've done the characters and the film
proud, and you can hear those muskets cracking and war whoops echoing among
the trees..."

the first periodical specifically devoted to the fantasy genre.
Premiering in early 1923, its publishers envisioned “The Unique Magazine”
as a place for a writer to be given
“free rein to express his innermost feelings in a manner befitting great
literature.”

PulpFest and the “New Fictioneers”
It’s called new pulp–stories by modern writers
who recreate the style of fiction that appeared in the pulp magazines
of yore.
Back then, the authors who labored for the rough paper industry liked
to call themselves scribes, word-slingers, penny-a-worders, and, perhaps
the most favored term of all, fictioneers.
Join PulpFest as we celebrate today’s fictioneers—the authors writing
the new pulp fiction.

The best-selling pulp magazine of the 1930s was Argosy. Published
weekly, the title followed a simple formula for keeping its readers entertained.
Their stories were lean, plot-driven, and always captivating. Long
factual explanations were kept to a minimum and logic was sometimes
stretched to the breaking point. But, the first rule of storytelling was
never broken – keep the action going and never let facts interfere with the
narrative’s pace.
|
|
Minions of the Moon by William Grey Beyer, published in Argosy in 1939,
perfectly fit those requirements. The novel concerned Mark Nevins, an ordinary
guy who needed his appendix removed. When his surgeon asked him to sign
a paper giving the doctor the right to use a new anesthetic, Mark saw no
reason not to cooperate. Of course, that was before he discovered that the
drug put him in suspended animation for 6,000 years. Awakening in a
world he knew nothing about, Mark found himself in a well-equipped tomb in
the company of an invisible ghost who seemed intent on annoying him at every
opportunity.
Things progressed from bad to worse. Mark discovered that civilization
had collapsed into barbarism, democracy was merely a memory, and there was
no place for a Twentieth Century city-dweller. And, that’s not considering
the invisible Omega, who is the last member of a lunar race, seeking some
human companionship.
It’s the beginning of a fun novel, as Mark and Omega explore this brave
new Earth, meet a beautiful girl (of course), encounter a band of Neo-Vikings,
and battle two very evil Russian brains housed in bottles. It’s science
fiction without any science! Minions of the Moon is also a top example
of the fast-paced storytelling so beloved by Argosy readers. Mark and Omega
proved so popular that they appeared in three more serials over the next
few years – Minions of Mars, Minions of Mercury, and Minions of the Shadow.
All three being wild, enthralling fantasies passing as science fiction,
composed by an author who later wrote several mysteries, and then vanished.

Dime Mystery Magazine: James A
Goldthwaite Book 1
In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names
— the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird
menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Dime Mystery Magazine
was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher
Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed
of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became
infamous, even to this day. This ebook contains a collection of stories from
the pages of Dime Mystery Magazine, all written by James A Goldthwaite reissued
for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.
Battle Birds #32: Last Flight Of
The Damned
Beginning in 1932, Battle Birds brought readers a thrilling main
story, referred to as a “novel”, that featured a rotating cast of main characters
like The Three Mosquitoes and Smoke Wade. After nineteen issues, just over
a year and a half after its debut, the magazine began to feature the air
adventures of Dusty Ayres, and the magazine became officially titled Dusty
Ayres and his Battle Birds. This lasted until the summer of 1935 when the
magazine folded after thirty-one issues. But Battle Birds wasn't finished;
it would return. In early 1940, Battle Birds reappeared on the newsstands.
But now the focus of the stories was on the conflict that would soon be known
as World War II. This resurrected Battle Birds lasted for 26 issues until
May 1944. And now Battle Birds is back, reissued for today’s readers in electronic
format. $2.99.
Dare-Devil Aces #037: The Dynamite
Trio
Dare-Devil Aces was another of the many pulps that rode the wave
of popularity of World War I aviation tales in the decade after the conflict.
It made its debut in February 1932 and lasted for an astounding 135 issues.
It finally closed after World War II ended, with the November 1946 issue.
During its run, it presented a wide assortment of high-flying aerial series,
including The Red Falcon, The Vanished Legion, The Three Mosquitoes, Molloy
and McNamara, The Black Sheep of Belogue, The Mongol Ace, Chinese Brady,
Captain Babyface, Smoke Wade and others. Strap on your flying helmet, toss
that scarf about your neck and get ready for some soaring action in the skies
over France and Germany during the Great War. Dare-Devil Aces return in vintage
pulp tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.

BUTTERFLY
A Tale of Borneo by EDMUND SNELL
With an Introduction by John Pelan
Dancing Tuatara Press #48
Edmund Snell is known as the Father
of the Fantastic Thriller because of the numerous yarns he published back
in the early days of the 20th century about far-off exotic climes, like Borneo.
That's the scene of this 1924 potboiler and Gavin L. O'Keefe has provided
a catchy mapback of the island, in the style of the old 50s Dell mapbacks.
In his introduction, John Pelan tells all about the intriguing career
of Edmund Snell in the pulps and elsewhere. See if this isn't a must-have

John Pelan introduces this hard to find classic from Edmund Snell.
For decades it's been sought after as a novel of Borneo, but it's actually
a collection of somewhat related short stories by an author who knew
quite a bit about the exotic lands he wrote about, in this case, Borneo.
To help you visualize the setting of the stories, Ramble House artist,
Gavin L. O'Keefe, has produced a wonderful mapback cover for the book. And
to top it off, John has added another short story to the dozen previously
found in the book, "The Black Spider".

THE BACK
OF BEYOND
THE VENGEANCE OF LIP-HI-SEE
by Edmund Snell
With an Introduction by John Pelan
Dancing Tuatara Press #50
Written in 1936 by one of the most prolific
of the pulpsters, Edmund Snell, this book has gained a reputation as one
of the finest of its kind to ever be published. It's the story of two men
who run a plantation on Borneo and the travails one runs into when he is
cheated by the other. Unlike most adventure novels of the time set in exotic
climes, THE BACK OF BEYOND has a respectful view of the native culture and
we get to see how they feel about British colonialism. John Pelan, in his
introduction, explains why this novel has become such a sought-after prize
among the collectors, and it's not just because of its rarity. It's simply
one of the best of its kind.
THE BACK OF BEYOND also features a mapback cover in the style of the old
Dell paperbacks of the 50s, designed by Gavin L. O'Keefe.

Blogging Dan
Barry’s Flash Gordon, Part Thirteen
“Space Circus” by Dan Barry was serialized by King Features Syndicate
from September 5 to October 29, 1955. “Space Circus” is significant for
being the first time in the Dan Barry strips where Flash’s past adventures
on Mongo are now an integral part of the storyline. One wonders if reader
response prompted King Features to request a change of direction from what
would today be considered a reboot to a direct sequel to the original storyline
of the early 1930s.
