Battered Silicon Dispatch Box - Now available!
Introducing Mr. Chang by E. A.
Apple
Pocketbook Lost Treasures from the Pulps #16
Quality Trade Paperback, "Ace Double" Format,
156, 138 pages
ISBN 978-1-55246-943-9 $25.00
Mr. Chang was Canada’s version of Mr. Fu Manchu, a character created
by Sax Rohmer. He was created by Elmer Albert Apple, a gentleman who hailed
from Cleveland Ohio, moved to Canada and married Beatrice Muriel Nixon. The
family lived in the Beaches in East Toronto and had one child Barney. E.A.
wrote a syndicated column "The Referee" and also True Romances under a pseudonym.
He created a number of sinister Mr. Chang and Mr. Rafferty stories in the
1920s and 1930s for Detective Story Magazine and republished in best Detective
Magazine with different cover illustrations. The family lived on eleven acres
on Gordon Point in Muskoka, and Barney remembers his father going to the
shed in the back of the house which he called the jail to do his writing.
His mother edited the work before submitting the manuscripts for publication.
Barney remembers visiting San Diego and San Francisco with his father to
research the Chinese tongs for his creative writing. Many of the stories
feature Chang finding his victims in rural and Northern Ontario, and his
headquarters was in Montreal, Quebec.
E.A. disappeared in the mid-30s. It was reported that he committed suicide
in the pulps, but this was incorrect. Barney, his son relates that his
father separated from his mother and moved back to Cleveland to be with
his family, and lived at a large institution in the Cleveland area as head
gardener, and didn’t do any more writing. Barney remembers visiting Cleveland
with his mother, and E.A. passed away in the early 1950s.
The idea to collect this series originated with Randy Vanderbeek of Kalamazoo,
Michigan. He knew the Battered Box liked to do stories by Canadian authors.
In addition many of these stories were set in Canada as well.
As the bibliographic data was assembled it was clear that this would be
a large project occupying some five folio sized volumes. When the project
was almost complete I received an e-mail from the author’s grandson Derek,
who noted that his father Barney was still alive and lived with his sister
Heather in British Columbia. Derek noted that they grew up in Uxbridge Ontario
and moved to B.C. after the death of their grandmother who maintained an
large archive in the basement of their home. The archive unfortunately did
not survive the trip out west. There was still a trunk upstairs in the attic
with some old pulp magazines and one book.
The two stories you have in your hands were published separately after their
appearance in Best Detective Magazine. Both are inventive, but the one involves
Science Fiction which may become reality 100 years later.
E.A. Apple created a second villain – Mr. Rafferty which is Canada’s version
of "Raffles," a character created by E.W. Hornung, a gentleman crook, with
some of the characteristics of Robin Hood, but not many!
Tears of Our Lady
Sax Rohmer as presented by John Robert Colombo
Pocketbook Lost Treasures
from the Pulps #15
Quality Trade Paperback, 62 pages
ISBN 978-1-55246-917-0 $10.00
Tears of Our Lady is a presentation of "the wisdom of Sumuru." It
appears in the guise of a dictionary of quotations based on the utterances
of Our Lady Sumuru, the mysterious protagonist intent on the mastery of
the world whose exploits are described in a series of five novels from the
pen of the English mystery story writer Sax Rohmer (1883-1959). These novels
appeared between 1950 and 1956. The seductive Sumuru (whom no man knows but
every man desires and every woman wishes to obey) is the founder of the clandestine
sodality known as The Order of Our Lady. She is credited with the authorship
of a private publication that sets forth her philosophy and code of conduct.
It is titled Tears of Our Lady, and while no copies of this publication are
known to have survived to the present day, the present editor has attempted
to reconstruct its contents in an aphoristic manner through quotation of
the direct speech of Sumuru as recounted by Rohmer in his series of fantastic
novels.
The present editor is John Robert Colombo who has been dubbed "a superfan"
for his interest in fantastic literature. He contributed the entries for
Canada to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and The Encyclopedia of Fantasy.
He is the editor of Other Canadas and the co-editor of Not to Be Taken at
Night, the first such anthologies to be published in Canada. His fantastic
poetry has appeared in Mostly Monsters and Space Poems and most recently
in Poems of Space and Time. Among his other recent publications are book-length
collections of the fantastic fiction of Algernon Blackwood, Stephen Leacock,
Leslie A. Croutch, and Maurice Level. Colombo has contributed the introduction
to The Sumuru Omnibus and is a long-time fan and collector of the books of
Sax Rohmer. As author and editor Judith Merril once wrote, "Colombo is the
real thing."
The Crimes of Hanoi Shan by H. Ashton White

Hanoi Shan is an allegedly real-life criminal mastermind documented
in the works of criminologist H.Ashton Wolfe.

Sax Rohmer, and only turned up in a handful of stories.

"Dog Show Murder" by Frank Gruber (digital
short)
Now available!
A rich man is murdered at the dog show,
and the Human Encyclopedia is the prime suspect
Oliver Quade knows how to sell an encyclopedia. First, read it
cover to cover three or four times, and make sure to remember everything
in it. Next, dazzle an audience with your accumulated knowledge. Put on
a good enough show, and the book will sell itself.
Quade, better known as the Human Encyclopedia, is performing his
act at a local dog show when a dogfight breaks out. Wary of wild mutts,
Quade backs away and returns to his booth to find a nasty surprise—a dead
man in white flannels. When the police insist on holding Quade responsible,
he and his assistant—the indefatigable Charlie Boston—are forced to solve
the murder the Quade way: by always being the smartest men in the room.
But is the Human Encyclopedia clever enough to prove to these dog show
cops that they are barking up the wrong tree?
This ebook features an introduction by Keith Alan Deutsch.

Blood 'N' Thunder /
Murania Press
Special Announcement!
A continuing proliferation of problems (both personal and professional
in nature) forced a suspension of all Murania Press activity late last month.
While significant difficulties remain, shipping of product will resume in
late November and all backorders will be filled before year’s end. These
include subscriber copies of Blood ‘n’ Thunder #38 and two titles previously
announced for release earlier this year: Volume Five of the Classic Pulp
Reprints series (featuring J. Allan Dunn’s The Island) and the long-awaited
Distressed Damsels and Masked Marauders. The latter title will figure in
a big publicity push tied to the upcoming centennial of the cinematic chapter
play: Chapter One of the first true movie serial, The Adventures of Kathlyn,
was released nationally on December 29, 1913. Although promised several
times only to be delayed, Distressed Damsels will definitely ship next month
to take advantage of the publicity break occasioned by the centennial.
Beginning in January, Murania Press will have the services of new volunteers
tasked with processing both retail and wholesale orders.
This assistance will enable editor/publisher Ed Hulse to spend the bulk
of his time preparing upcoming books and new issues of Blood ‘n’ Thunder.
In the interest of getting back on schedule, BnT’s next issue will be another
double, cover-dated Fall 2013/Winter 2014 and numbered 39/40.
It will be published in late January or early February. Contents of the
double will be revealed in upcoming blog posts on the Murania Press site.
We thank those with outstanding orders for their patience, and promise to
get all backordered shipments out gradually over the next several weeks.

Blood 'N' Thunder /
Murania Press
The Blood 'N' Thunder #38 - Summer 2013
Shipping to resume in late November!
This issue’s outstanding feature is a lengthy excerpt
from Nathan Madison’s recently published book, Anti-Foreign
Imagery in American Pulps and Comic Books, 1920-1960.
In this richly detailed, extensively illustrated piece Nathan
explores “Yellow Peril” fiction from the pulps. His exhaustive
study complements Bill Maynard’s celebration of Fu Manchu’s centennial
from our last issue.
Another book published earlier this year, Will Murray’s Skull
Island, pitted Doc Savage against King Kong and aroused
much interest not only among the Bronze Man’s fans in
general but devotees of Philip José Farmer’s Wold Newton
Universe in particular. BnT contributor and Wold Newton adherent
Rick Lai examines Skull Island and catalogs its deviations from the
Universe in an unusually absorbing work of scholarship. In a separate
piece Will responds to critics of his approach. Let it never
be said that BnT refuses to present both sides of a story!
Will’s second contribution to BnT #38 is an 80th Anniversary
hat-tip to the long-running hero pulp G-8 and His Battle
Aces, adventures from which a re now being offered in audiobook
form by Radio Archives. He covers a hitherto overlooked
attempt by Popular Publications editors to gauge reader interest
in a proposed shift of emphasis for the magazine.
This summer marked another important anniversary in American pop
culture: Superman debuted 75 years ago in the first issue
of Action Comics. Mike Bifulco, author of The Original
Superman on Television (a definitive guide now in its third
edition), weighs in on the recent theatrical release Man of
Steel and reflects on the enduring popularity of the TV series starring
George Reeves.
This time around our “Tricks of the Trade” department boasts
a particularly comprehensive installment by long-time pulp
editor and science-fiction specialist Robert A. W. “Doc” Lowndes.
Originally written for a 1949 writers’ magazine, this 6400-word
treatise is perhaps the most informative piece of its type
we’ve published to date. It provides the clearest look yet
at how pulp editors appraised the manuscripts they received by
the thousands every year.
BnT #38 also reprints two fascinating short stories culled from
vintage pulp magazines. James B. Connelly’s “The Last Passenger,”
from an early 1913 issue of The Popular Magazine, may
well have been the first work of mass-market fiction inspired
by the Titanic tragedy. “The Tenth Man,” from a 1922 issue
of Adventure, is a taut tale of African intrigue by the unjustly
forgotten Robert Simpson.
Subscriber copies will begin shipping shortly after Labor
Day. To those of you who either aren’t BnT subscribers
or have let your subscriptions lapse, remember that signing
up for a year earns you a 20-percent discount on the recently
published Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction. There’s
a special page on the Murania Press website that allows you
to do just that.
Individual
copies of Blood ‘n’ Thunder #38 can be had for $11.95 plus shipping from
the Murania Press site as soon as they are available.
The cost of a one-year, four-issue subscription is $40,
which represents a considerable savings.

from Murania Press.
A greatly revised and expanded version of 2007’s Blood
‘n’ Thunder Guide to Collecting Pulps, this massive
new book has been positioned as more of a reference work
than a mere manual for hobbyists. It’s a complete history of
the pulp magazine (told in more detail than ever attempted
by a single author) wrapped up in one-volume. Its 2007 predecessor
had 226 pages and close to 400 pulp-cover reproductions.
The new Guide to Pulp Fiction has 414 pages and 700 cover
repros, along with a smattering of original cover paintings.
Chapters from the old Guide have been extensively reworked.
New chapters have been added on Spicy pulps, sports
pulps, love pulps, and war-and-aviation pulps. Also, two
new appendices have been created for pulp-fiction readers
who don’t collect the vintage magazines. One appendix
gives basic information on the best small-press reprint
publishers, while the other lists the most important
anthologies of pulp stories in various genres.
The Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction is
priced at $29.95, which includes shipping to domestic
U.S. buyers. However, Murania Press is also making the

THE FIRST SYNN: THE BLOODSTONE CONFIDENTIAL
By Teel James Glenn
NEW DIGEST NOVEL SERIES DEBUTS FROM
PRO SE PRESS
Now available!
Pro Se Productions, a leader in New Pulp and Genre Fiction, gladly
commits THE FIRST SYNN: THE BLOODSTONE CONFIDENTIAL, the first of a new series
of supernatural pulp thrillers by noted award winning author Teel James Glenn.
Complete with chills and thrills harkening back to the classic Pulps, THE
FIRST SYNN introduces the first sibling duo in Pulp history, ready to take
on whatever horror flies their way! From Teel James Glenn and Pro Se Productions-
THE FIRST SYNN: THE BLOODSTONE CONFIDENTIAL!
“There’s absolutely nothing,” says Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro
Se, Tommy Hancock, “like a good Pulpy supernatural thriller! Especially
one with a strong duo in the lead. THE FIRST SYNN has all the markings of
a classic Pulp tale, even borrowing quite a bit from classic cliffhanger
serials, but what really makes this story work is the way that TJ works
the words he writes. Each phrase turns just right and the description brings
all the fear and daring do to life.”
The Bloody Curse of the Vampire! Years ago Gideon Synn tried to save Faith
Bloodstone from a deadly family curse in upstate New York. He failed and
Faith died at the hands of a mysterious blood drinking fiend. Synn ran from
his failure and became a world traveler, joining the French Foreign Legion
and eventually becoming a mercenary in China.
Now, years later he has opened a security firm with his sister Kathy. Charity
Bloodstone, Faith’s younger sister, comes to him for help against the same
curse—the supposed vampire ghost of her ancestor, Justice Bloodstone! According
to legend, Charity has only one week to live!
|
|
Several people have been
killed by what appears to be the undead Justice in ways that suggest a
supernatural cause. The Synn siblings are drawn into a whirlwind of terror
and evil as the mystery of the vampire murders comes closer and closer
to fulfilling the curse.
Has Gideon found love with Charity only to lose her to dark forces? Who
are the armed thugs that have attacked the siblings? Can Kathy Synn keep
her brother out of trouble long enough to solve the mystery of the Bloodstone
Confidential?
Featuring a chillingly atmospheric cover by Adam Shaw and book design and
formatting by Sean Ali and ebook formatting by Russ Anderson, THE FIRST
SYNN is a hit with reviewers-
“Another adventure straight out of an RKO serial. Anyone who likes those
old black and white movies will enjoy this story. The descriptions, the language,
the style…it’s all there. A good entry into Author Glenn’s booklist. Looking
forward to book #2. Keep ‘em coming, TJ!”- Toni Sweeney, Book Reviewer
“THE BLOODSTONE CONFIDENTIAL is a nice entry into this book series. Hopefully,
Glenn can come up with enough clever plots and enemies to throw at Synn
for numerous further adventures.” —Bruce Grossman, www.bookgasm.com

Forgotten Pulp Villains: Hanoi Shan and
Professor Colonna - Now online!
For twenty years now, George Vanderburgh’s Battered Silicon Dispatch
Box has been publishing quality hardcover and trade paperback reprints of
titles one might never otherwise discover. Their books rarely appear on Amazon
or eBay, so the devoted bibliophile who ventures to www.batteredbox.com is
among the few to find such treasures.
Initially focusing on Sherlockian pastiches and scholarly efforts as well
as reprinting long unavailable titles from Arkham House and Mycroft &
Moran, BSDB has broadened their catalog to include other more obscure treasures.
Their two most recent titles are The Crimes of Hanoi Shan by H. Ashton-Wolfe
and The Last of the Borgias by Fred M. White. Both books were edited by acclaimed
pulp historian Rick Lai whose own works were spotlighted in last week’s
column.

LOUIS L'AMOUR: LAW OF THE DESERT BORN GN
- Now available and coming to comic shops
in February!
(Writer) Louis L'Amour & Various (Art/Cover) Tom Yeates
Based on a story by the legendary Louis L'Amour, Law of the Desert Born
is a classic Western, told in a style like no other L'Amour story!
Adapted by Charles Santino from a screenplay by Beau L'Amour and Kathy
Nolan, and with art by Thomas Yeates, this is an all-new story for the
millions of Louis L'Amour fans throughout the world.
The first graphic novel adaptation of the work of master storyteller Louis
L’Amour is a dynamic tale of the Old West that explores the borderlands
of loyalty and betrayal with the emotional grittiness of a noir thriller.
New Mexico, 1887, a land in the midst of the worst drought anyone
can remember. Family histories and loyalties run deep, but when rancher
Tom Forrester has his access to the Pecos River cut off by the son of his
old partner, he convinces his foreman, Shad Marone, to pay Jud Bowman back
for the discourtesy. Yet what starts as a simple act of petty revenge quickly
spirals into a cycle of violence that no one can control.
Now Marone is on the run, pursued by a sheriff’s posse across a rugged
desert landscape. Leading the chase is Jesus Lopez, a half-Mexican, half-Apache
with a personal stake in bringing Shad to justice. Newly released from
jail, trusted by no one, Lopez swears he’s the only man who can track
Marone down. That may be true. But who will live and who will die and what
price will be paid in suffering are open questions. Fate and the Jornada
del Muerto desert possess a harsh justice that is all their own.
With a propulsive script from Beau L’Amour and Kathy Nolan, adapted
by Charles Santino and illustrated in bold black-and-white by Thomas Yeates,
Law of the Desert Born captures the dust and blood of Louis L’Amour’s
West—a world where the difference between a hero and a villain can be
as wide as the gap between an act of kindness or brutality or as narrow
as a misspoken word.
Hardcover, 8x11, 160 pages, B&W, $25.00
LOUIS L'AMOUR: LAW OF THE DESERT BORN
is solicited in the December PREVIEWS (Available November 27).

The New Pulp Heroes
- New pulp blog now online!
Tom Johnson has started
a new Blog for authors who have created new pulp
heroes.
This Site is for essays
on The New Pulp Heroes. It’s about time we catalog
new characters appearing in books and anthologies.
Since Tom does not have time to read everything being
published, he is offering space for legitimate creators
of new pulp characters to send him their data, and he
will post their essays. The only changes Tom will make to essays
will be editing and format. If you wish, include a jpeg of
a book cover or b&w illustration if you have permission
from the artist. By sending Tom your essays, you are giving me
permission to promote and showcase this data. Eventually,
it would be nice to see all the data published in book format.
Essays should be up to 500 words, and include information
on MC and back up characters, creator, title of books, and where
the stories can be found.

PULPWOOD
DAYS: VOLUME 2: LIVES OF THE
PULP WRITERS
Edited by John Locke
This unique collection mines the writers’
mags for those rare articles in which pulp writers looked
back on their careers—how they broke in, their
successes and failures, the glories and hardships
of the pulp racket. These are hardboiled writing
stories from the Pulp Era—when the greatest time in history
to sell fiction—the 1920s—was suddenly followed by
one of the worst—the ’30s.
Complementing the twenty pieces are all-new profiles
of the subject authors. Who were they? What
weren’t they telling us? What happened to them after
the pulps died? We meet the writers and see how
their lives were shaped by the times and the ever-shifting
fortunes of the pulps.
From all walks of life, they were as interesting
as the characters they imagined—soldiers and sailors,
a lumberjack, a daredevil aviator, a WWI ambulance
driver, a beauty-contest emcee, a career criminal, and—why
not?—the leader of a marching band.
Some of these names are remembered today; many are
not. But they all left behind fascinating and
enlightening glimpses into the great days when the
pulps ruled the newsstands. Included are Arthur J. Burks,
Tom Curry, Steve Fisher, Hapsburg Liebe, Chuck
Martin, Harold Masur, Tom Thursday, Paul Triem, Jean
Francis Webb, and many others. Over 100,000 words of pulp
history.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics
#38
Detective Doc Harker #1 Audiobook
"Crime Nest" by Edwin Truett
Read by Michael C. Gwynne. Liner Notes by Will Murray
Now available!
As the grim 1930s turned into
the dangerous 1940s, pulp magazine publishers began searching for new titles
and concepts. One of the oldest, the Munsey Company, looked over the field
with its Doc Savages, Shadows and Spiders and decided that the time for cloaked
superheroic avengers had peaked. So they brainstormed a new breed of heroes
that broke the mold.
The mystic Green Lama was the first. An American Buddhist lama who fought
crime, he has never been duplicated.
Munsey followed up with an equally original crime-buster, Dr. Thaddeus Clay
Harker. An aging but spry Kentucky colonel, Dr. Harker was a criminologist
operating under the cover of an itinerant peddler of patent medicines, his
Chickasha Remedies.
|
|
Doc Harker specialized in small-town trouble far from the big cities. His
M. O. was to send his advance agent, the lovely master of disguise, Brenda
Sloan, to lay the groundwork for his arrival. Then he and his strong right
arm, ex-heavyweight wrestler Hercules Jones, would blow into a trouble spot
and begin their quiet investigations, operating out of his mobile trailer
crammed with patent medicines and sophisticated scientific apparatus designed
to combat crime. No one suspected that the genteel Southerner with the courtly
charm concealed a steel-trap intellect burning with a single-minded determination
to stamp out evil. Yet once Doc Harker got started, invariably all hell would
break loose!
The creation of Texas writer Edwin Truett “Bud” Long, Doc Harker debuted
in Detective Dime Novels in April, 1940, and continued in Red Star Detective.
In his first thrilling case, Doc and Herk come to Abbottville, Texas–-an
outwardly ordinary place that the Underworld is planning to turn into a secret
Crime Nest.
Every issue of Red Star Detective also included a backup novelette by the
notorious Robert Leslie Bellem, starring Nick Ransom, ex-Hollywood stunt
man turned private eye, the proprietor of Risks, Incorporated. “Peril for
Sale” marks his debut.
Also included are three swift-moving short stories, Murray W. Mosser’s “Trouble
For Three,” L. K. Frank’s “Trooper’s Vacation” and C. S. Montanye’s “A Gal
Named Sal.”
Michael C. Gwynne turns on the charm in our most unusual audiobook. If
you cotton to Doc Harker and his little band of troublebusters, we have
lined up several sequels. 6 hours $23.98 Audio CDs / $11.99 Download.

Jungle Jim! The very name conjures up
images of exotic locales, wild beasts and hostile natives. Jungle Jim braved
these with the aid of his faithful Hindu companion Kolu as he traveled
the wilds of southeastern Asia in search of adventure.
Jungle Jim is best remembered as the star of sixteen Columbia B-movies starring
Johnny Weissmuller, fresh off his twelve-year stint as Tarzan, beginning
in 1948. But Jungle Jim’s history goes back more than a decade.
Produced by Jay Clark and often written by Gene Stafford,
The Adventures of Jungle Jim was on the air weekly from 1935 to 1954. A combination
of jungle danger and colonial politics, the show brought listeners tales
of slave traders, pirates, foreign spies, wild beasts, poachers, hostile
tribes, and, during World War II, the Japanese, as Jim often served as an
Allied operative. Armed with his trusty .45 automatic, the adventurer searched
for lost treasure and investigated such mysteries as ghosts and unknown islands.
Throughout it all, Jungle Jim maintained a cool head.
|
|
Beginning with Tarzan, the pulp era was full of jungle characters. Jungle
Jim is one of the unique ones, in that he wasn’t a barely-literate loincloth-clad
tree-dwelling wild man, but rather Jim Bradley, a hunter – a “great white
hunter” in the mold of heroes of earlier popular fiction such as H. Rider
Haggard’s Allan Quatermain and Lord John Roxton from Arthur Conan Doyle’s
The Lost World.
Jungle Jim was the archetypal Great White Hunter that one thinks of at
the mention of “lost worlds”, which filled the pages of pulp magazines,
and later, movie serials. He was everything one could ask for in a pulp
protagonist – handsome, brave, resourceful.
Following a number of successful B-motion pictures for Columbia, Johnny
Weissmuller continued the role in a 1955-56 Screen Gems television series
consisting of 26 episodes. Jungle Jim also appeared in comic books by Standard
(1949-1951), Dell (1953-1959) and Charlton (1969-1970).
This volume contains forty fifteen-minute episodes from 1937 and 1938, including
the conclusion of “The Tiger’s Claw” (#81-96) and the beginning of “The
Afghan Hills” (#97-120), for ten hours of exciting and intelligent adventure.

Will Murray's Pulp eBook Classics
Now available!
The Spider #82: "Dictator's Death
Merchants"
Could the nation’s keenest lawmen stem the tide of murder and demolition
created by El Crocodilo, when that brutal mystery-king of a bygone Underworld
seemed able to forestall every brilliant, daring thrust of the Spider himself?...
Read this stirring account of Richard Went-worth’s indomitable sally into
the very jaws of the most sinister trap ever set to destroy the Master of
Men! Total Pulp Experience. These exciting pulp adventures have been beautifully
reformatted for easy reading as an eBook and features every story, every
editorial, and every column of the original pulp magazine. $2.99.
G-8 and His Battle Aces #17: "Squadron
of the Scorpion"
Their insignia were signs of the Zodiac... they fought only when
ordered by the Stars! Yet G-8 had a hunch that this apparently superstitious
staffel was important, that somehow it was playing death stakes in one of
the most deadly war schemes ever laid — and he followed his hunch on a lone
daring patrol! G-8 and his Battle Aces rode the nostalgia boom ten years
after World War I ended. These high-flying exploits were tall tales of a
World War that might have been, featuring monster bats, German zombies, wolf-men,
harpies, Martians, and even tentacled floating monsters. Most of these monstrosities
were the work of Germany’s seemingly endless supply of mad scientists, chief
of whom was G-8’s recurring Nemesis, Herr Doktor Krueger. G-8 battled Germany’s
Halloween shock troops for over a decade, not ceasing until the magazine
folded in the middle of World War II. G-8 and his Battle Aces return in vintage
pulp tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.
Double Detective - The Green Lama
#1: "The Green Lama"
Only the Green Lama stood between this mysterious, sinister, master
criminal, and the domination of the world. Only the Green Lama had the knowledge,
out of the ages, and the fortitude, out of a life of strict adherence to
Truth and belief in Justice, to combat this menace which threatened the
very life of the nation. The jade-robed Buddhist priest who battled crime
as The Green Lama is back! Conceived in 1939 at the behest of the editors
of Munsey Publications to compete with The Shadow, it was an outlandish
concept. While The Shadow possessed the power to cloud men’s minds after
his time in the East, The Green Lama relied on other, even weirder, powers
— including the ability to become radioactive and electrically shock opponents
into submission! He carried a traditional Tibetan scarf, which he employed
to bind and befuddle opponents, and possessed a knowledge of vulnerable
nerve centers which he put to good use in hand-and-hand combat. Om Mani
Padme Hum! The Green Lama knows! The Green Lama returns in vintage pulp
tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.
Detective Dime Novels #1: "Crime
Wave"
Introducing Dr. Thaddeus Clay Harker who has his own peculiar remedy
for rat-infested towns. A new Dime Novels’ feature character. Detective
Dime Novels featured the adventures of Dr. Thaddeus Harker, a sawbones with
a penchant for crime. The first issue was dated April 1940. Doc Harker was
an old-fashioned Southern gentleman, a retired chemist who now devotes his
life to criminology. He travels around in a run-down medicine show with
his two aides "Herk" Jones and Brenda Sloan. With this as his cover, he delivers
his own brand of justice when crime sprouts. The second issue of the magazine
series was renamed Red Star Detective and the series closed down after a
total of four issues. The final issue did not feature Dr. Harker. Detective
Dime Novels returns, reissued for today's readers in electronic format. $2.99.
99 cent
eBook Singles
Each 99 cent eBook Single contains a single
short story, one of the many amazing tales selected from the
pages of Terror Tales and Rangeland Romances.
These short stories are not included in any
of our other eBooks.
Terror Tales: "A Kiss for the Blood
Lady" by Ralston Shields
Dr. Corvin saved my life — or did he? For he transferred my healthy
brain into the body of a killer-maniac, a man who had spent his days spilling
the blood he needed to appease the beautiful, sylph-like Prani. Now, I too
craved Prani, and for her, I was willing to offer the blood of my wife!
In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names — the shudder
pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird me most
popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher Harry Steeger
was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed of pulp story
survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became infamous, even
to this day. This ebook contains a classic story from the pages of Terror
Tales magazine, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $0.99.
Dime Mystery Magazine: "They Dance
And Die" by James Duncan
To Raoul Barr the voice of his own dead had spoken — yet no voice
was so fearful as that half-mad music which followed it, bringing the dancing
death in its wake... In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various
names — the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines
— weird menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Dime Mystery
Magazine was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications,
whose publisher Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater
of Paris. This breed of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in
that time, they became infamous, even to this day. This ebook contains a
classic story the pages of Dime Mystery Magazine, reissued for today’s readers
in electronic format. $0.99.
Rangeland Romances #20: "Gamblin’
Gal"
Lovely Lucky made a reckless bet with conniving Caleb — hoping to
find a way to handsome Sid’s arms. Her betting folly won her a kiss — and
an unwelcome sweetheart. One of the most popular settings for romance stories
was the old west, where men were men and women were women. As many a swooning
damsel could attest, "There's something about a cowboy." The western romance
became one of the most popular types of magazines sold during the early and
mid-twentieth century. $0.99.
