2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
April 12-14, 2013 Well, with the New Year fast approaching, the clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2013 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention. The con will run from April 12-14, 2013 (with the con suite opening the night of April 11), and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. The last two years our dealer room has had 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration this year. Based on the last two years, we should sell out of wall tables in early January, and island tables in early February, so if you've been thinking of getting a table at the convention, please let us know as soon as possible! This year's themes will celebrate the 80th anniversaries of science fiction and fantasy magazines (using as our starting point Weird Tales for fantasy and the scientifiction issue of Science & Invention for SF), as well as the 100th anniversary of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu. Those themes will be the focus of our film programming, once again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well as our art show, program book and evening panels. If you have any appropriate art that you'd be willing to make available for display, please let me know. And we're still looking for more material for the program book, which once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books (and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline is March 5, 2013). Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from the estate of Jerry Weist, but this time most of the material will be from Jerry's personal collection (as well as a few lots from the warehouse find that has been the focus of the last few year's auctions). As many of you know, Jerry collected for condition, and there are some beautiful pulps among the over 1100 items that will be spread across 200 lots. We're in the process of photographing and scanning, and have 41 lots currently available for viewing on our website and Facebook page -- check them out! More will be added soon. Among the highlights of the auction are over 80 issues of ALL-STORY, including 16 issues with ERB (including 3 installments of his first story, UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS), a complete run of PLANET STORIES in great condition, 11 stunning issues of REAL DETECTIVE TALES AND MYSTERY STORIES, a rare publisher's bound copy of OVERLAND MONTHLY featuring 2 stories and 2 poems by CLARK ASHTON SMITH (including his first published story and first published poem), items from the files of the Gernsback magazines, early issues of BLUE BOOK, and tons more. If you're planning on staying at the hotel, the deadline for booking rooms and getting the convention rate is 5:00 pm Central on March 25, 2013. You can book online at the website the hotel set up for us: https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/5324 You can also find the
link on our website and Facebook page.
We look forward to seeing
you at the convention!

The 2013 Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of
Friendship (ECOF) Gathering - May 17-19, 2013!
The 2013 Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) Gathering will be held 17-19 May in Morris, Illinois. Morris is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago, at the junction of Interstate 80 and Illinois Route 47. The Chicago regional chapter of The Burroughs Bibliophiles, The Muckers, are hosting. Artist Mike Hoffman will be guest of honor. Registration rate is still to be determined. If you plan on attending, book your room at the Quality Inn, 200 Gore Rd, Morris, Illinois, 60450, (815) 942-6600. A small block of rooms is being held for us until 15 April. Book under the event code “The Muckers” for an $85 plus tax room rate, single, double, or triple occupancy. This is $10 less than their normal rate. If four persons will be occupying one room, the hotel will charge an additional $6 for the room. The hotel offers a free hot breakfast entry along with standard continental breakfast fare, as well as free wi-fi. The convention organizer recommends you book early, as the ECOF will coincide with graduation time in the area. There is a restaurant/bar concession in the building which opens at 4:00 p.m. Drinks purchased there can be brought into the hotel breakfast area. Also, there is a Chili’s and an IHOP within walking distance of the hotel. The dealers’ room setup will start at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning. We must be out of the room by 4:00 pm on Saturday. The Saturday evening unofficial “banquet” will be from 5:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Trails Clubhouse in Minooka, about 15 minutes east of the hotel. A Sunday morning farewell breakfast will be at the hotel. For attendees who stay longer, there will be a post-convention get-together at the home of the ECOF organizer, with an opportunity to view her collection. |

Blogging Austin
Briggs’ Flash Gordon – Part Thirteen, “The Storm Queen of Valkr” / “The
Wizard King of the Fur Men” -
Now online! “The Storm Queen of Valkr” was the twenty-sixth installment of the Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between March 24 and September 29, 1946, “The Storm Queen of Valkr” opens with Flash’s rocketship crashing down in the eye of the hurricane. Flash pulls Dale from the wreckage just as the ship explodes. They are rescued by a party of amazons riding giant wolves and discover their leader is Valkir, Queen of the Forbidden Kingdom of Valkr where they have landed. Once they reach Valkir’s palace, Flash is placed in the Queen’s harem. He soon meets her royal consort, Marko and her dwarf jester, Roki. At dinner, Flash offends Valkir by stating he is President of Mongo. She challenges him to a fencing match. When Flash bests her, her oversized house cat pounces upon him. Flash fights off the great cat. Later Marko confides in him that Kang’s rocketship has likewise crashed down in Valkr and the deposed Emperor is wooing the Queen and setting himself up as a rival to Marko. This marks an interesting departure from the established formula where the reader would expect the Queen to quickly fall for Flash with her consort becoming a jealous rival to our hero. Enter the
Phantom
In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated
the 32nd president of the United States of America, proclaiming that “We
have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Adolph Hitler was named the Chancellor
of Germany, amid promises of a parliamentary democracy. San Francisco
broke ground for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. King Kong
premiered in New York City and the game of Monopoly was invented. Prohibition
came to an end. And the hero pulp revolution began.
The tremendous success of Street & Smith’s The Shadow Magazine prompted the return of the single-character periodical. The first of these hero pulps was The Phantom Detective. Launched by Ned Pines’ Thrilling Group, the Phantom was the alter ego of man-about-town Richard Curtis Van Loan. A veteran of the first world war, this moneyed playboy was bored with life until a family friend recommended he “try his hand at solving a mysterious crime which had stumped the police.” His initial success led Van Loan to dedicate his life and fortune to combat crime, making the Phantom “a name known and admired by the police of every nation.” The first issue of The Phantom Detective was dated February 1933. It would be followed that year by other single-character pulps including Doc Savage, The Spider, and Pete Rice Magazine. The Summer 1953 issue would be the final number of The Phantom Detective. It was the longest-lived of the hero pulps, lasting for just over twenty years. Join PulpFest
in July for a celebration of “The Hero Pulps of 1933.”

Pulp Magazines
Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

What he and his high-tech super-soldiers find along the way will shake the Empire to its very foundations, and unleash a crisis of galactic proportions that not all the armies in creation can hold back... "Plexico is the master of space opera." --Pulp Fiction Reviews LORDS OF FIRE begins a new galaxy-shattering adventure from the author of HAWK: HAND OF THE MACHINE and LUCIAN: DARK GOD’S HOMECOMING, and bridges the divide between those two novels and universes. Tachyon Publications: THE APES OF WRATH - Now available! by Richard Klaw, editor From the jungles of Tarzan to outer space and beyond, the apes in these remarkable tales boldly go where humans dare not. Provocative and fantastical, this clever anthology delves into the cultural fascination with—and dread of—humanity's simian cousins. In "Evil Robot Monkey," a disgruntled chimp receives an implant that makes him more cunning than his cohort and humans alike; and a murder mystery unravels with the discovery of a hair that does not appear quite human in the classic Poe tale, "Murders in the Rue Morgue." Merging steampunk with slapstick, "The Ape-Box Affair" has a not-so-ordinary orangutan landing on Earth in a spherical flying ship—where he is promptly mistaken for an alien; and Joe R. Lansdale has King Kong setting a terrible example with booze and Barbie dolls in "Godzilla's Twelve-Step Program." Intertwining beloved classics with inventive new writings, this collection explores the lighter and darker sides of these furry primates and holds a mirror to man's deepest anxieties and desires.
