If you are a fan of the air war pulps, or have read some of Age of Aces’ pulp reprints, you have heard the name Sid Bradd. He has been writing articles about the air pulps for over 40 years. Many people know him from his essay in Nick Carr’s The Flying Spy, which detailed the life and adventures of G-8 and His Battle Aces. He was a supporter and contributor to our work here at Age of Aces. But more importantly, he was our friend.

The book also examines the massive changes in public attitudes towards Africa, race, hereditary peers and wildlife conservation over the past century.

BLACK DOG BOOKS ANNOUNCES NEW EDITIONS BY L. PATRICK GREENE
Black Dog Books announced an exclusive agreement with the heirs of L. Patrick Greene to represent the L. Patrick Greene Literary Trust and issue new collections of works by the author.
"We are extremely honored to enter into this agreement with the family to represent and publish these collections," said Black Dog Books publisher Tom Roberts. "A large portion of Greene¹s fiction was collected in a series of three dozen hardcover editions published solely in his native England. Long out of print, these will now be made available readers worldwide in both print and ebook editions."
Prior to undertaking a career as an author, L. Patrick Greene (1891-1971) spent four years 'in-country' as a member of the Rhodesian Mounted Police. His experiences as a self-reliant constable fueled much of the African-set adventure fiction he would later pen, appearing in the all-fiction pulp magazines such as Short Stories, Adventure or Blue Book.
"While many writers followed in the footsteps of Kipling and other authors with their representation of British Colonial Africa, Greene is nearly unique in the fiction of the period in that he took a sympathetic viewpoint towards the plight of the indigenous peoples in his writings while Northern Europeans, seeped in the racially superior doctrine of the day, chose to exploit and belittle them," shared Roberts.
This viewpoint by Greene was not without reason. "As a young policeman Greene was injured while on patrol," Roberts continued, "and would likely have died were it not for the intersession of the Africans, who, at great personal hardship, transported Greene one hundred miles by foot to the nearest medical facility equipped to treat and save his life. Greene never forgot the debt he owed to the Africans, praised and uplifted the native people whenever possible for their generosity and knowledge of their land."
Black Dog Books¹ first release of Greene¹s fiction will be BARTERING THE SOULS OF MEN, the first of a two-book set collecting the adventures of South African mounted policeman 'Dynamite' Drury. BARTERING THE SOULS OF MEN will be released in 2013 with a foreword by Stephen Greene.
A second volume of Greene¹s stories is now in preparation by Black Dog Books. Subsequent collections will follow.

I think you'll be thoroughly entertained."—James Reasoner from his introduction.

Hundreds of years before the hero Hadon sailed forth from his shining city of gold and jewels upon his legendary adventures, the heroine-priestess Lupoeth set out upon the decree of the oracle to discover a new land upon the untamed shores of ancient Africa’s southern sea. But Lupoeth finds herself little prepared for the trials ahead, as well as those that follow upon her heels—for the jealous queen who wants her rival banished has appointed a worshiper of the sun god with a criminal past as the expedition’s priest, hoping to undermine the mission and seal its doom.
Now, lost in the deep jungle, Lupoeth must fight to keep her ill-equipped band of followers alive in the face of deadly beasts, savage Neanderthals, and conspiring enemies. Soon she finds the most accursed deity of her people’s faith, exiled from the empire by the Great Goddess Kho Herself, may be her only ally in this wild land. But Sahhindar, the god of Time and bronze, has a mysterious agenda of his own—one that Lupoeth fears might spell doom not only for her expedition, but for the entire world…

| Mulholland Books - The Saint Returns in December!
Hodder's crime and thriller imprint Mulholland Books is bringing the Saint books by Leslie Charteris (right) back into print, and making them available as e-books for the first time in the UK.
Mulholland Books editor Ruth Tross acquired British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in the 35 titles from Jane Gelfman of Gelfman Schneider New York. They all feature the debonair sleuth, Simon Templar, nicknamed "the Saint" because of his initials-and likened by Tross to Robin Hood, "master of disguise, always getting in and out of scraps". The series was made into a televsion programme in the 1960s featuring Roger Moore in the title role.
The first batch of titles will be released on 6th December, with Enter the Saint, The Saint Closes the Case, The Avenging Saint, and Featuring the Saint all published in e-book and paperback, priced £8.99. Mulholland will then release four or five titles each month through to July 2013.
The books will each have new introductions by other thriller writers and Saint fans, with the introduction to Enter the Saint to be written by Patricia Charteris Higgins, the author's daughter. Ian Dickerson, who runs The Saint fan dub and moderates a number of Saint internet forums, is also in the process of compiling extra material to run in the e-books, to give the novels context.
Tross said: "The Saint has always been published by Hodder. So while it made sense for us to do this through Mulholland, because we have that focus on crime, we wanted to keep it within Hodder. I think all publishers are moving towards looking at backlists, and the advantage digital gives us to get those to a new audience. There is a serious group of people who are mad keen fans of the original TV series, and also a whole generation of fans who are aware of the character, but not the source material."
On the look of the series, Tross said: "It is going to have a fairly consistent branding image, using the stick man with the halo and gun. Certainly in series publishing it is going to have a strong style and image across the whole series that the reader will recognise across all the titles. I think lots of people will recognise the image already, perhaps some without knowing exactly why."
Look out for the first four titles in December, just in time for a Saintly Christmas.
Thanks to Ian Dickerson for the tip!

| PARKER THE HUNTER Softcover - Coming in November!
Darwyn Cooke
The Hunter is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loved and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind-to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him!
Richard Stark (AKA Donald Westlake) was a master writer of crime fiction and Parker is arguably his greatest Creation-having been featured in more than a dozen novels and several well-regarded films (including Point Blank with Lee Marvin and Payback with Mel Gibson), and an upcoming one starring Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez that will be released this fall.
Master storyteller Darwyn Cooke has won nearly every award available to comics creators. His DC: The New Frontier was turned into an Emmy-nominated animated feature. The Hunter is the first in a series of Parker graphic novels that Cooke is adapting, the first two earning the comics Auteur more Eisner and Harvey awards for his already crowded mantle.

| Pulpville Press - Now available! THE ART TREASURE MURDERS by John L. Benton
STEPHEN DUANE, FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
He had a justly famous record with the F.B.I., and through a maze of violent action and stealthy murder, he traces the ART TREASURE MURDERS to their startling denouement. Some of the greatest of the world’s paintings—slit from their frames in the great museums of Europe by the deft hand of the “Surgeon”, so-called because the stroke of his knife is as deft and unerring as that of the greatest in the medical world. Then a wealthy art dealer of Boston is stabbed to death by the single thrust of a needle-pointed knife. A New York portrait painter meets the same dark death. A collector, a gallery clerk, an art salesman… Through the American art world strikes the terror of the needle-pointed knife. Is it the knife of the “Surgeon”? Special Agent Stephen Duane of the F.B.I. stepped into the case when Charles Francis Coleman was found in his car stabbed to death.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #13
Unabridged Audiobook
The Octopus
“The City Condemned to Hell”
Now available!
One of the most bizarre pulp magazines ever published was titled The Octopus.
Released in 1939 by Popular Publications, it turned the formula of The Spider on its head. Instead of centering on a fearless avenger of crime, it focused on the master criminal himself!
His true identity unknown, The Octopus is a denizen of the underworld, bent on bringing America's greatest city to its knees through a campaign of terror and horror never before seen.
|
| Writers Norvell W. Page of Spider fame, backed by Edith and Eljir Jakobsson produced this weird epic under the name of Randolph Craig. Evidently they were attempting to duplicate the success of The Spider—with a weird twist. But there was more to The Octopus than an archfiend who dressed like a cuttlefish. Just as no pulp series can last long without a worthy villain, they understood that without a formidable foe, The Octopus would flop. So they created a hero with three identities. Jeffrey Fairchild is a wealthy medico. By day, he masquerades as kindly old Dr. Skull, treater of the sick in New York's East Side slums. But at night, he dons a more sinister guise and becomes the sworn foe of all crime—The Skull Killer! Branding his kills on the forehead like the Spider, The Skull Killer takes on The Octopus and his purple-eyed minions in the wildly over-the-top story, The City Condemned to Hell.
Backing up this masterpiece of weird menace are three novelettes torn from the pages of the only issue of The Octopus ever published. This audiobook is narrated by the talented brothers of Doug Stone and Glen Stone.

The Spider #17: The Pain Emperor
In a hundred thousand homes, families sat down together at the supper table. A few hours later, those persons were dead — killed by poison in canned foods! Thousands of women used cosmetics, and acid made their faces forever hideously scarred. A master criminal, daring and clever, was ruthlessly slaughtering Americans to win immense illicit profits for himself. Only one man was powerful enough and wise enough to stop this wholesale murder — Richard Wentworth, champion of oppressed humanity, better known as the Spider. And the Spider was engaged in the bitterest battle of his career, fighting the Avenger, a false, wily crusader who was determined to destroy him! Another epic exploit of America's best-loved pulp-fiction character of the 1930s and 1940s: The Spider — Master of Men!
The Spider #18: The Flame Master
Richard Wentworth was playing the most dangerous game in the world — a man-hunter outside the law; a righteous lone-wolf avenger of the weak; a scourge of the evil, the wicked and the corrupt! Loathed by the organized armies of the underworld, hunted ruthlessly by the forces of the law, he was ever between two raking cross-fires... Seldom, however, had the Spider, Master of men, faced the odds which challenged him when the man called Aronk Dong summoned all the underworld to serve him in the most ghastly campaign of rampant crime and wholesale slaughter this country had ever experienced. Armed with a weapon which struck through stone walls at victims sleeping peacefully in their beds, it was small wonder that criminals everywhere hailed the new leader — and flocked in evil glee to his dark banner! Another epic exploit of America's best-loved pulp-fiction character of the 1930s and 1940s: The Spider — Master of Men!
As a special Bonus, Will Murray has written “Meet the Spider” especially for this series of eBooks.

The maddest of the Mad Scientists — Doctor Death — starred in his own bizarre pulp magazine in early 1935. S. civil and business leaders, headed by Jimmy Holm, a millionaire criminologist and occultist. One of the rare unabashedly supernatural series the pulps ever produced.

| TARZAN 100TH ANNIVERSARY STATUE
Coming in November!
For a century the mighty Lord of the Jungle has captured the hearts and the imagination of people of all ages who love action and adventure. In this special Centennial Anniversary statue, internationally acclaimed artist Joe DeVito captures the rugged essence of Edgar Rice Burroughs' creation: Tarzan's perfectly coordinated form, sculpted by nature, radiates power and animal grace. His blade, as always, is ever ready to protect and defend his beloved realm and its animals from all who would harm it. Intertwined in the base that supports Tarzan, we see the key characters in his saga: Jane, the love of his life; Kerchak, his mortal enemy; D'Arnot, who introduced him to European civilization; and his noble jungle companions, Tantor the elephant and the Golden Lion. Riding a trusted vine, secure in his iron grip, the Jungle Lord symbolically arcs with them into a new century!
This Centennial Edition statue of Tarzan of the Apes brings to vibrant life, in three kinetic dimensions, the spectacular hero that Edgar Rice Burroughs created in literature so many years ago. Each statue uniquely hand-painted in amazing life-like detail, standing 15" tall including the base.
