Best known for his thrilling tales of Dr. Fu Manchu, author Sax Rohmer also penned the adventures of the resourceful Major Bernard de Treville, known better as "The Crime Magnet," a roving adventurer who encounters intrigue in every corner of the globe. With his companion, Digger, he follows in the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Originally published in This Week magazine between 1937 to 1945, only a handful of these rare tales have ever been reprinted. Here, for the first time, are all fifteen short stories, plus the exciting serial, "The Panama Plot." Accompanied by an all-new introduction by Will Murray, historian of popular literature, this is the most significant Sax Rohmer collection in decades. Authorized by the Rohmer estate.

"These are superb yarns of suspense, written in terse, hardboiled prose."

"The stories that make up The Rajah From Hell possess an added appeal. As Dashiell Hammett did in The Maltese Falcon, Bedford-Jones has taken a basic storyline that's pure pulp—Mysterious, sinister Indians! Obscure murder methods! A vengeance quest that lasts for years!—and couched it in modern, realistic terms, producing a highly entertaining amalgam. Take a look and you'll see what I mean. I think you'll be thoroughly entertained."—James Reasoner from his introduction.

Edgar Rice Burroughs Commemorative Stamp
First Day of Issue: August 17, 2012

The Postal Service is proud to honor Edgar Rice Burroughs, one of the most popular and prolific authors of the early 20th century,” said Stephen Kearney, executive director, Stamp Services. “Best known for inventing the iconic character Tarzan, he wrote more than 70 books, including historical fiction and several popular series of science fiction tales. Social media is a great way to preview our stamp program while also making it easy for people to share the news about stamps of interest with their friends.

Restless by nature, Burroughs (1875-1959) served with the U.S. Cavalry, dredged for gold, worked as a door-to-door salesman and a railroad policeman, and perfomed many other varied jobs until he published his first story, “Under the Moons of Mars,” in 1912 — and found his destiny as a writer.

This Forever stamp shows Tarzan, Burroughs’ most famous literary creation, clinging to a tree by a vine with his left hand and wielding a weapon in his right. Burroughs appears in profile in the background. Hulbert Burroughs, the author’s son, took the 1934 photograph that served as the basis for the stamp portrait of Burroughs. The depiction of Tarzan is an interpretation of the character by artist Sterling Hundley of Chesterfield, VA, under the direction of art director Phil Jordan of Falls Church, VA.

This stamp issuance coincides with the 100th anniversary of the publication of “Under the Moons of Mars,” and his first Tarzan story, “Tarzan of the Apes,” in 1912.

American Science Fiction: Nine Classic Novels of the 1950s (boxed set)
Arriving this Summer!

Modern science fiction came of age in the 1950s, and it was inAmericathat the genre broke most exuberantly free from convention. Moving beyond the pulp magazines, science fiction writers stretched their imaginations at novel length, ushering in an era of stylistic experiment and freewheeling speculation that responded in wildly inventive ways to the challenges and perplexities of an era of global threat and rapid technological change. Long unnoticed or dismissed by the literary establishment, these “outsider” novels are now recognized as American classics.

• Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth, The Space Merchants, What’s it all worth?
• Theodore Sturgeon, More Than Human, Could this be the next stage of evolution?
• Leigh Brackett, The Long Tomorrow, Who will control post-apocalyptic America?
• Richard Matheson, The Shrinking Man, Ever feel small?
• Robert A. Heinlein, Double Star, Are politicians ever really themselves?
• Alfred Bester, The Stars My Destination, What is the price of revenge?
• James Blish, A Case of Conscience, What in God’s name are we to do with aliens?
• Algis Budrys, Who?, Can you trust?
• Fritz Leiber, The Big Time, Is the past ever really past?

Gary K. Wolfe, editor, is Professor of Humanities in Roosevelt University’s Evelyn T. Stone College of Professional Studies and the author, most recently, of Evaporating Genres: Essays on Fantastic Literature and Sightings: Reviews 2002–2006.

About a month back, PulpFest 2012 was very proud to announce that we’d be selling
longtime fan, scholar, and collector Al Tonik’s substantial collection of pulps, paperbacks,
hardcovers, dime novels, comic books, fanzines, and, particularly, reference books.

Now that we have begun cataloging Albert's substantial holdings,
it has become apparent that we must take a couple of years to work through the collection.
Therefore, only a portion–still rather substantial–will be put up for bid at our 2012 Saturday Night Auction.

In order to thank the PulpFest membership for their patience,
Al has decided to sell one of his most prized possessions–
a recreation of the November 1934 front cover art to The Phantom Detective,
painted by the original artist, Rafael DeSoto.

Visit http://www.pulpfest.com/2012/07/24/rafael-desoto-painting-to-be-sold-at-auction/
for further details, including a photo of the painting and replica of the pulp.

Pulp fiction authors survived by being fast.
Beginning at 4:30 PM on Thursday, August 9th, pulp historian and publisher John Locke
will discuss the complex working conditions faced by the army of writers who labored at breakneck speed
to provide millions of words—all at 1- to 2-cents apiece.

This lecture will take place at the Thompson Library, 1858 Neil Avenue Mall,
on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
It is free and open to the public.
It is co-sponsored by the Aldus Society and the Rare Books and
Manuscripts Library of the Ohio State University Libraries, in conjunction with Pulpfest 2012.

In addition to Mr. Locke’s lecture, the Thompson Library will be hosting a small exhibit of
Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard items culled from the university’s collections,
including some typescripts of Howard’s poetry.
It will be held in the Special Collections display area on the first floor of the library.

Further details can be found at www.pulpfest.com.

They were called scribes, word slingers, hacks, and penny-a-worders.
But perhaps the most favored term, especially among the men and women who labored for the
bloody pulps, was fictioneer or, more specifically, a fiction writer, particularly a
prolific creator of commercial or pulp fiction.

Since 2009, PulpFest has been celebrating today's fictioneers with afternoon reading by "New Pulp" writers.
We'll continue that practice in 2012 beginning with Christopher Paul Carey,
the author licensed by the estate of Philip José Farmer to continue the
Science-Fiction Grandmaster's Khokarsa series (begun in HADON OF ANCIENT OPAR and FLIGHT TO OPAR).

On Friday, 08/10, at 1 PM, Chris will start off our "New Fictioneers" readings.
He'll be reading from THE SONG OF KWASIN (which he co-authored with Farmer) and EXILES OF KHO.
In addition, at 11 AM on the same day, Chris will be signing the entire limited edition print run of
EXILES OF KHO. You can learn more details by visiting www.pulpfest.com.

In October 1912, Edgar Rice Burroughs introduced readers of
THE ALL-STORY magazine to "Tarzan of the Apes."
100 years later, that name still resonates across the globe.

Stop by the PulpFest website for a look at PulpFest's Tarzan programming.
Our post "Tarzan: A Hero for the Ages" is now online.
You'll also be able to see a post on THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN,

PulpFest is very pleased to announce that illustrators Jim & Ruth Keegan,
best known for their comic strip series "The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob,"
published by Dark Horse Comics, will be appearing at the "Summer’s Great Pulp Con" in August.
Jim & Ruth, along with their friend Mark Schultz, will be helping PulpFest 2012 to celebrate
the 80th anniversary of Robert E. Howard’s Conan of Cimmeria.

In addition to their celebrated comic strip version of Howard's life, the Keegans have illustrated
Howard's fiction for Wandering Star, Del Rey Books, and The Robert E. Howard Foundation.

Jim, Ruth, and Mark will be appearing in PulpFest’s dealers’ room where they will have some of their Howard-related work on display. On Saturday evening, August 11th, the three artists will discuss the artistic challenges of illustrating Howard’s work and will present an historical overview of seven decades of Conan art.

Who was Norman of Torn, the terrible outlaw, the fame of whose daring exploits was ringing through all England? Where did he come from? Was he of noble blood, as some thought, or a base born churl? All that Norman of Torn knew about himself was that he had been raised by an old Frenchman in the decrepit Castle of Torn and that he had been taught swordsmanship, French, horsemanship and a hatred of the English. Even at the age of seventeen he was the greatest swordsman in England and his reputation as a fearless outlaw had traveled far and wide. At eighteen there was a tremendous price upon his head. At nineteen he was the leader of a fierce robber band of more than one thousand men of all kinds, from nobleman to serf; the only requisites for admission being willingness and ability to fight and an oath to obey the laws made by the Outlaw of Torn.

For years the Earth Men suffered under the rule of their conquerors. Gradually their efforts were rewarded, and they forced their enemies over the mountains to the narrow plain by the great western sea. Then a descendant of Julian 5th appeared and led the hosts in the last great battle that freed the earth of its conquerors. The story is full of colorful, weird and spectacular scenes and rapid and thrilling action. This book contains the complete unedited trilogy.

This is one of the most impressive Indian stories that has been written in recent years. Differing from the usual Burroughs tales of weird fantasy, it not only has thrills and excitement galore but it shows us the beauty and grandeur of the life of the red man when he crossed the plains. The hero of the story is Shoz-Dijiji, the Black Bear, whose father and mother, Jerry and Annie McDuff, Scotch immigrants, were killed by a tribe of Apaches while crossing the plains to California. The infant was adopted by the chief of the tribe and raised as an Indian. Ironically, he was taught a hatred of the whites, which he bore with fanatical intensity. In the background of this vivid tale of the Indian is a romance, different than romance as we know it. Nevertheless, love is love in any language with every people, in all climes, and THE WAR CHIEF is a magnificent picture of Indian love. Written by America’s great versatile author, Edgar Rice Burroughs, it is another book that has that intangible something—personality.

BEHOLD "THE NIGHT WIND" by Christopher Yates
Cover and interior illustrations by Mark Maddox

A fifth, original installment of the Night Wind saga
set immediately after the events in the fourth installment!

Coming in late 2012!

Bingham and Katherine Harvard are polite, New York society.  He is an Ivy League graduate, heir to his foster father’s fortune, and successor to the presidency of New York’s Centropolis Bank.  She is the daughter of a United States Senator, scion of the Maxwilton family, the political dynasty of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Husband and wife reside at the sprawling Long Island estate, Myquest.

The Harvards’ elevated status in the social register is not high enough to avoid the clutch of crime.  Years ago Bing earned an alias, The Night Wind, in a bare-fisted brawl with the law in an all-sweeping revenge against false witnesses.  With five times the strength of an average man, Bingham prevailed.  Later, Lady Kate was a prisoner in her own home, but sprang man-traps of her own devising in a successful bid at freedom.  Using sleuthing skills attained as a New York City police detective was no small advantage during her plight.  Together they have resolved to take the battle to the villain instead of awaiting fate to drop yet another scoundrel on their doorstep.

Aided by the United States Secret Service, and their valet, Julius, the Harvards race headlong into chaos.  Dubbed the Dry Capital of the World and home of the Anti-Saloon League, the principal proponent of the successful drive for national prohibition, one would never guess that Westerville, Ohio could be described as chaotic.  But a half dozen suspected arsons hit speakeasies in nearby Columbus, drawing in organized crime from New York to protect their business…until they, too are hunted down like game animals.

Amidst this turmoil, United States Senator Warren G. Harding is conducting his campaign for President of the United States from the front porch of his home in Marion, Ohio.  His challenger for the Oval Office is the Governor of the State of Ohio.

History is being made in central Ohio this fall season of 1920.  Will it be historically tragic or triumphant?

The ingredients for anarchy are in the bowl waiting to be stirred.

Be prepared to be blown away.  Behold, “The Night Wind!”

The first four installments of the Night Wind saga were written by the father of serial detective Nick Carter, Frederic Merrill Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey.  The Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose life-span in American popular culture ran from 1913 to the early 1920s.

Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence.  His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s fiction magazines The Cavalier and All-Story Weekly just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher.

Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: Alias “The Night Wind,” The Return of the Night Wind, The Night Wind’s Promise, and The Lady of the Night Wind.  In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as Alias “The Night Wind.”

After almost 100 years out of print, Alias “The Night Wind” was re-released by Wildside Press in March 2007.  The Wildside Press edition of the sequel: The Return of the Night Wind was released in September 2007, and the third installment The Night Wind’s Promise hit bookstores in September 2008.  The fourth novel: The Lady of the Night Wind was released in April 2009.

BEHOLD “THE NIGHT WIND” is a fifth, original installment of the Night Wind saga set immediately after the events in the fourth installment.
BEHOLD “THE NIGHT WIND” was written under contract with Wildside Press, with cover and interior illustrations by Mark Maddox and a foreword by Win Scott Eckert

The copy-edited manuscript was delivered to Borgo Press, an imprint of Wildside Press, the first week of June 2012.
Anticipated release is immediately before or amidst the 2012 Holidays.
Formats, so far, are trade paperback and e-book, prices to be announced later.

Stay tuned for the official release announcement…soon.

Fading Shadows
Shadowhawke: First Flight by K.G. McAbee & Tom Johnson

Now available!

Deposed from her Balkan kingdom, the Spider Lady rules a new kingdom in America. Taking over the New York underworld, she operates from a hidden underground cavern. Those who oppose her are forced into her deadly web. But one man and his fighting team take up the trail to bring justice to the Queen of the underworld. The Shadowhawke!

With the ever-rising cost of pulp-related books, Tom Johnson re-launched his old Fading Shadows imprint to see if it was possible to produce a book for under $10.00. With Gail McAbee’s birthday coming up in November, Tom chose their action-packed pulp story, “Shadowhawke: First Flight” as an experiment.

This 128-page (4 x 7) paperback is the result. Printing isn’t cheap, but we’ve eliminated the middleman. With only a few copies ordered for this experimental product, Tom is offering them on a first come basis at $10.00 (includes US postage). This was not meant for regular sales and is not available on Amazon or in bookstores.

FRANK R. PAUL: THE FATHER OF SCIENCE FICTION ILLUSTRATION
Jerry Weist (writer) • Frank R. Paul (art & cover)
Coming in October!

Frank R. Paul is almost universally recognized as the "Father of Science Fiction Illustration," and rightly so, since his work has influenced and inspired generations of artists and visionaries over the past eighty years. From Flash Gordon to Luke Skywalker, Paul's presence is still being felt in the twenty-first century.

Jerry Weist, noted Science Fiction historian, scholar, and founding editor of the prestigious EC comic fanzine Squa Tront, has turned his keen insight towards Paul, who envisioned a world of futuristic cities, space travel and alien life forms. These fantastic visions were realized in the pages of Amazing Stories and hundreds of other science fiction pulps and digest magazines. Weist, who authored Ray Bradbury: An Illustrated Life (in collaboration with Bradbury) has brought together informative text on Paul and a visual record of nearly every one of his incredible covers, as well as some of his very best, and rarely seen, pen and ink interior illustrations.

This will be a visual feast for lovers of classic science fiction art.
With an introduction by Vincent Di Fate, Hugo Award-winning science fiction illustrator.

Hardcover,
8” x 12”, Full Color, 160 pages, $29.99

Join us Thursday, August 9th – Sunday, August 12th
at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Columbus, Ohio for PulpFest 2012.

You'll also be able to see a post on THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN,
the one and only Tarzan film that Burroughs produced.

Please visit http://www.pulpfest.com/programming/other-guests/ for more on Jim & Ruth Keegan
and Mark Schultz. PulpFest will run from August 9th through 12th.

If you were an aviator living in Kansas City and you took off one fine morning for New York and landed in Los Angeles, that would be surprising—it would give you quite a laugh. But suppose that you had taken off for Mars and landed on Venus! Could you laugh that off! That is precisely what Carson Napier did—he landed on Venus. How it all happened and what happened to him is told in this new novel of high imaginative fiction. If you have never travelled with Edgar Rice Burroughs, there is a treat in store for you. If you have already accompanied him to the heart of Africa, to Mars, to the Moon, to the center of the earth, you have had a foretaste of the thrills that await you.

Pulpville Press - Now available!

Here are two of Burroughs realistic stories of life in the early 20th Century. THE GIRL FROM FARRIS’S: “There are no good men,” said the Girl with a cynicism born of cruel experience in the narrow lines of her sordid existence. To the Man, reared in an environment of luxury and knowing little of life’s seamy side, this was incomprehensible. He was foreman of the grand jury; she, a member of “the oldest profession in the world.” THE OAKDALE AFFAIR: From the moment the mysterious burglar enters the palatial home of Jonas Prim in Oakdale until he stands beside a professional tramp as both are about to be lynched, this story contains melodramatics with a kidnaping, two murders, a horrible stalking thing, and a gypsy’s death.

Pulp Forums - Now online!
The majority of pulp discussion these days is happening on various Yahoo newsgroups, but Jason Aiken believes that a centralized forum would be beneficial as well. This is especially true for bringing new fans into the hobby, as people in their teens, twenties and early thirties grew up on message boards /  forums and don't have much experience with Yahoo or newsgroups. To that end, Jason has started up a message board for pulp discussion called PULP FORUMS. You can visit and register at the link below.

Jason hopes that pulp and new pulp can coexist in one place and we can get some good discussions going, as well as have some veteran pulpsters interact with new fans.

THE NEFERTITI-TUT EXPRESS by Ray Bradbury
Now available and coming soon to Amazon.com!

"In the late summer of 188-, a train leaves Cairo heading across the desert... carrying an odd assortment of Egyptians, Europeans and English men and women. A cannon fires at the train from the dunes and the train's fuel tender is knocked apart. Lacking fuel, the train stops dead near a small Egyptian ruin from another age. Foraging for fuel the passengers are driven further into the desert by a brief sand storm where they stumble upon the remains of an ancient Egyptian tombyard."

Thus begins a ghost story by Ray Bradbury. Inspired by a telephone call from the noted animator Chuck Jones, Ray Bradbury dashed to his typewriter composing a poem entitled, "The Nefertiti-Tut Express." However, the bizarre subject matter continued to haunt the author and he expanded it to over 2,000 words of a completed screenplay outline.

Lost in his files for fourteen years, Bradbury rediscovered the screenplay in 1990. Unable to revive it, he sent the manuscript to his friend, writer Harlan Ellison, to see if he could add dialog and directing instruction. But Ellison's own demanding publication schedule forbade time for revisionary work, and the manuscript lay dormant and was soon forgotten.

Now, more than thirty-five years after its conception, Ray Bradbury's original screenplay outline, "the Nefertiti-Tut Express," has at last been fleshed-out and reanimated through the artistic vision of Gary Gianni, with more than twenty illustrations.

Trade edition, less than 3000 copies printed
.

The book is printed upon nice acid free papers withheavy paper covers and is saddle-stiched enabling the book to lay flat to better view the twenty illustrations by Gary Gianni.  The book sells for $29.95 plus shipping.

Ray Bradbury received his copy two weeks before he died and this was his comment.
"The NEFERTITI-TUT EXPRESS is a beautiful and fantastic book!" - Ray Bradbury

Airship 27 Productions - Coming in August!
CAPTAIN ACTION – PULP HERO!

Airship 27 Productions, one of the premier publishers in the New Pulp movement, and Captain Action Enterprises, licensors of the popular Captain Action toy line, have joined forces to produce the first ever Captain Action pulp novel, “Riddle of the Glowing Men,” by Jim Beard.  The book debuts this August at PulpFest in Columbus, Ohio.

“We are tremendously excited to be working with Joe Ahearn and Ed Catto of Captain Action Enterprises,” said Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor, Ron Fortier.  “This is the first time we’ve ever put together a title based on a highly popular and successful license.”

Captain Action is based on the action figure created in 1966 by Stan Weston for Ideal Toys. He came equipped with a wardrobe of costumes allowing him to become many different heroes such as Batman, The Lone Ranger, the Green Hornet and many more. In 1967, Captain Action proved so popular that the line was expanded to include a sidekick, Action Boy and a blue skinned alien foe with bug eyes, the nefarious Dr. Evil.  The following year, DC Comics licensed the character from Ideal and published five issues of Captain Action featuring industry luminaries such as Jim Shooter, Wally Wood and Gil Kane.

Since 2005, Captain Action Enterprises, has been producing an array of exciting new collectibles, including statues, toys, comics, trading cards, and apparel. Still, the one remaining venue the enduring hero had yet to conquer was that of a prose novel. Enter veteran writer Jim Beard, a life-long fan of the

character.  “Jim approached us late last year with this idea for a Captain Action pulp novel,” recalls Catto. “We were immediately intrigued by the possibilities and began seriously exploring the idea.”

It was Beard who then brought Ahearn and Catto to Airship 27 Productions.  “At the time I’d just finished my first book for Airship 27,” Beard elaborates.  “Impressed with their industry leading quality and professionalism, I knew they were the right people to usher Captain Action into the fast-paced world of pulpdom.”

The challenge of doing a licensed property appealed to Fortier and his partner and Art Director, Rob Davis and they signed on.  Their first goal was to assemble the finest art team possible. This was achieved by recruiting the talented cover painter, Nick Runge.  Runge’s work on such IDW titles as Angel & Terminator –Salvation has spotlighted him as being one of the finest new artists in the graphic field today.  Davis himself took on the task of doing the nine interior illustrations while also designing the entire package.

“Riddle of the Glowing Men,” is set in the sixties where secret agent, Miles Drake, aka, Captain Action, is attacked at A.C.T.I.O.N. headquarters by several assassins whose green skin glows as if radiated.  In the process of learning the identity of these killers and the reason behind their attack, Captain Action teams with a beautiful female Russian agent and their quest leads them to a hidden civilization under the frozen wasteland of Siberia. “Jim Beard has written a terrific, authentic Captain Action adventure,” applauds Fortier. “It perfectly captures the break-neck speed and thrills of the early pulps only with today’s modern sensibilities. This book is sure to appeal to both Captain Action fans and new pulp enthusiasts alike.”

Joe Ahearn and Ed Catto will be hosting a Captain Action panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con with further details about other exciting plans for the classic hero.  Artist Nick Runge will also be present at his table in Artist Alley.  Fortier, Davis and Beard will be in attendance at
PulpFest and will announce the book’s actual publication date.

Pulpmaster: The Theodore Roscoe Story
by Audrey Parente
foreword by Theodore Roscoe

The allure of French Foreign Legionnaire Thibaut Corday’s adventures flowed from the pen of Theodore Roscoe. Exotic tales from a dusky outpost unfolded in glossy-covered 10-cent magazines, before television. Hundreds of Roscoe’s yarns, published on cheap pulp paper unraveled mysteries, immortalized hometown heroes and stirred the imagination of a generation. In real life, Roscoe stowed aboard tramp steamers and mingled with locals in far away corners. His intriguing style later echoed in non-fiction works, when he was among the first to view declassified Lincoln assassination documents and when he documented historic American military operations. Journalist Audrey Parente became steeped in American pulp history when she lived blocks away from Roscoe in Ormond Beach, Florida, where she chronicled his life for this book.

MASKS
Dynamite pulp hero crossover!

Coming in November!

This November, Dynamite Entertainment and writer Chris Roberson are teaming up to bring comic book readers "Masks," the first Dynamite crossover featuring the publisher's lineup of famous pulp heroes of yesteryear: Green Hornet, Kato, The Shadow, Miss Fury, Black Bat, Zorro, The Spider and others.

This eight-issue event book features a who’s who of pulp icons united to rebel against an upstart political party that sweeps into office in New York State with plans to put the entire country under their thumb.

Here’s Dynamite’s plot summary for the crossover series: "In Masks #1, it's 1938, and the Justice Party has swept into office in New York State. But the newly-elected officials are in the control of powerful criminals, who quickly corrupt the law to their own advantage.  When a fascist police state is instituted, the only ones who stand in defense of the innocent are masked vigilantes like the Shadow, the Green Hornet, Kato, and the Spider. When the law is unjust, justice must be an outlaw..."

While the entire series will be written by Roberson, the debut issue of "Masks" also features the art of Alex Ross -- and not just on covers. Ross is painting the entire issue, interiors and all, marking his first interiors since DC Comics' "Justice." Roberson spoke with CBR News in detail following the book's announcement about all things from his love of the pulp crime genre  and his plans for getting all the heroes in one place.

Ron Ely, Doc Savage

In 1975, Ron Ely won the sought-after role of Doc Savage for George Pal’s 1975 motion-picture of the same name. While fans of the pulp magazines don’t feel the movie lives up to the expectations of the printed page, it’s still a fun film. During the late thirties, Doc Savage and his five Amazing Adventurers are sucked into the mystery of Doc’s father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc’s father’s death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold. It was reported that a sequel had been filmed in the Lake Tahoe area simultaneously with the principal photography for the first Doc Savage movie, but the sequel was never completed because of the poor box office for that first film. George Pal, famous for The Time Machine (1960) and War of the Worlds (1953), passed away shortly after this movie was released in theaters, possibly another reason why a sequel was never completed.

Ron Ely, Television’s Tarzan
In 1966, Ron Ely signed to play the lead role of Tarzan (a.k.a. Lord Greystoke), in a successful television series that ran two full seasons. Already well educated and fed up with civilization, Tarzan returned to the jungle and, more-or-less assisted by chimpanzee Cheetah and orphan boy Jai, waged war against poachers and other bad guys.    Guest stars included Julie Harris, Jock Mahoney, James Earl Jones, Ethel Merman, Simon Oakland and Diana Ross, among others. The series    was so successful he even starred in two movies made from that series in 1970. Ely claims that he refused to use a stunt double in his vine-swinging or animal fights, and as a result he was often injured on the set. It has been noted by Tarzan fans that Ely’s physical appearance and dialogue were much more like those of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character than could be said for any other Tarzan.

Warner Archive recently released the complete first season on DVD and will be available from vendors at the convention. We will also be screening a couple episodes on the big screen this weekend!

TARZAN CELEBRATES 100 YEARS!
Helping to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Tarzan this year is one of our weekend guests, Ron Ely. He was the 15th screen Tarzan (if you don’t count Gordon Griffith) and was to have played a Tarzan impersonator in a projected Mike Henry television show, which never materialized. He had been tested 14 months earlier when Henry got the part. Prior to Tarzan, he was seen sharing screen time with Clint Walker in The Night of the Grizzly (1966), Mitzi Gaynor in South Pacific (1958) and Clifton Webb in The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker (1959).

Ron Ely’s first big break was playing the recurring role of Mike Madison on the television series, The Acquanauts. Professional salvage divers Larry, Drake and Mike (played by Ron Ely), made their living braving the dangers of deep water, recovering sunken wrecks off the Southern California coast. Frequently, these assignments brought them into conflict with more human dangers from people who wanted to reach the wrecks first, or who had a vested interest in seeing that what had been sent to the bottom stayed there. Midway through the program’s run, the divers moved their shop to Malibu, and name of the show became Malibu Run.

Come meet Ron Ely and get his autograph, ask him questions you'd like to know the answers to, get your photo taken with him and celebrate 100 years of Edgar Rice Burroughs' famed creation.

Some of the other guests announced to date are:
James Darren, Singer and Actor

Tall, good-looking James Darren was a student of acting coach Stella Adler and made his name in the 1950s in a series of teenage-themed films. A better actor than most of his contemporary teenage heartthrobs, which is probably why he was the only actor who appeared in all three Gidget movies, Gidget (1959), Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963).  It was in 1965 that James Darren was approach to co-star in a television series, The Time Tunnel, which has since become a pop culture classic.

Robert Colbert from The Time Tunnel and Maverick
Robert Colbert became an enduring television icon when he got the starring leads on Maverick and The Time Tunnel, two classic televisions series that can still be seen in reruns today.

The Lone Ranger Rides Again!
Robert Daniel, grandson of the late Brace Beemer (radio's The Lone Ranger), will be among the many attendees at the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention. Robert will have some impressive photos and artifacts from Beemer's scrapbooks on display.

SUN KOH Volume 2: QUEST OF THE SECRET MASTERS
by Dr. Art Sippo

Coming in late 2012!

Pro Se Productions, a leading publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announces an addition to its already dynamic publishing calendar for 2012!

“Even though the New Pulp Movement,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is still in its infancy, relatively speaking, there have already been some writers and works that stand out.  Authors and books who will truly be remembered as being the best of what New Pulp has to offer and considered classics by those after us, and even by many today. One such book from the last two years was "Sun Koh: Heir of Atlantis" written by Dr. Art. Sippo.   Pro Se is extremely proud to announce that we will be publishing and promoting Volume Two of The Collected Stories of Sun Koh, tentatively titled ‘ Quest of the Secret Masters’ written once again by Dr. Art Sippo.”

According to Sippo, “Sun Koh was a character created by Paul Mueller for Germany’s pulp magazines who was based on Doc Savage. He was intended to be the Nietzschean Übermensch. He was an Aryan prince from ancient Atlantis who came to the future and descended out of the sky to land in London. He had come to prepare for the coming of the next Ice Age when Atlantis would rise again from the ocean. He would save all those who were fit to survive and use them to repopulate the lost continent. Of course, those he considered to be most fit were of Aryan/German extraction according to the theories of the Theosophists whose mythology had been taken over by the Nazis.”

“Between 1933 and 1938 there were 150 Sun Koh stories published. Sun Koh epitomized the Aryan ideal and fought all sorts of villains and super-science threats very similar to those from the Doc Savage stories.  Strangely enough, the Nazis found these stories frivolous and in some cases subversive. Eventually they forced the series to end and Mueller had Sun Koh discover and conquer the newly risen Atlantis inside the Hollow Earth in 1938. That brought an end to the series.”

Sippo continued, “Sun Koh was the most successful of all the Doc Savage clones (if we exclude the comic characters like Superman and Batman). I was fascinated by the idea of such a character having so many adventures in a language that I could not read. I became frustrated and decided to write my own stories about Sun Koh preserving as much of the original adventure ideas as possible and excluding all the Nazi nonsense.”

“We are ecstatic,” Hancock stated, “to be a part of the work Art is doing with this great character.   He has taken a character that could have been lost to history and even more, marred by the country and period it originated in, and using the original tales and roots of the story, created and woven an intelligent, action packed adventure that not only does not skirt the philosophical issues involved, but instead turns them on their ear by showing Sun Koh to be more than what label anyone puts on him.   Art writes him as, even as a Prince of Atlantis, a very human hero who has to make choices about what sort of man he will be in the world around him.”

“Quest of the Secret Masters” is currently in production and will be published in late 2012 from Pro Se Productions!   Press releases featuring more information and interviews with Dr. Sippo and more will follow in coming weeks as publication approaches!

Pro Se Publications and Reese Unlimited debut
LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME TWO: DIE GLOCKE!
Now available!

Pro Se Productions, a leading New Pulp Publisher proudly announces its latest release.  From Reese Unlimited, an imprint of Pro Se Productions, and Pro Se's Sovereign City Project comes the second volume of one of New Pulp's most popular and newest heroes- THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME TWO: DIE GLOCKE! by Veteran New Pulp Author Barry Reese!

Lazarus Gray and his aides in Assistance Unlimited return for what may prove to be their greatest challenge... What is the secret of Die Glocke? Will Lazarus Gray and his teammates discover the answer in time to stop a power hungry madman and his undead soldiers? The Adventures of Lazarus Gray returns with an epic adventure where the fate of the world is at stake. Is even Lazarus Gray up to a task that could take him to the very gates of Hell itself? Also, Assistance Unlimited takes a case that will bring them face to face with Terror and the making of a Hero! Included in this volume is an updated timeline of Reese's works and an interview with the author himself!

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME TWO: DIE GLOCKE most definitely builds on what Reese established in Volume Two, but also explodes with new concepts and themes.  “I never really think about themes when I’m writing a story,” Reese says, “but in hindsight, sometimes I can see recurring ideas. With Die Glocke, I really wanted to focus on the family dynamic that we’ve established with the members of Assistance Unlimited. These people would die for one another and I wanted to show why that was and how far that loyalty could be tested.”

“The story is also about paying homage to the many things that went into the creation of Lazarus Gray,” continues Reese. “Obviously, there are elements of The Avenger in the series but I also drew heavily upon Indiana Jones, the Hellboy stories by Mike Mignola and Andy McDermott’s novels. I wanted to incorporate elements from all of those, in terms of plot elements, specific scenes and just the overall feel of those works.  Hopefully, I’ve taken all of that and combined it with my own creations to feel fresh and new – but with all my New Pulp work, I feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Featuring cover and interiors by George Sellas and one interior piece by Anthony Castrillo and logo, format, and design work by Sean Ali, DIE GLOCKE-THE ADVENTURES OF LAZARUS GRAY VOLUME TWO: DIE GLOCKE is a must have for any fan of Action, Adventure, and New Pulp! The Three Planeteers
Now available!

During the Golden Age of Science Fiction, one writer towered over all others. The legendary Edmond Hamilton was the pulp pioneer who took over where Jules Verne and H. G. Wells left off. Hamilton wrote on a scale that dwarfed anything that had come before. Where other writer’s imaginations saw only expeditions to the Moon and Mars, Hamilton envisioned a future filled with an interplanetary police force, space pirates and fearsome weapons capable of destroying whole planets. Among readers of his early fiction in magazines ranging from Amazing Stories to Weird Tales, this penchant for galaxy-spanning space opera soon earned him the nickname of “World-Wrecker” Hamilton.

Although NASA has all but debunked the possibility of humanoid life on Mars and

Venus—not to mention the frigid, inhospitable outer planets—21st century readers still thrill to Hamilton’s infectiously enthusiastic yarns, which influenced both Star Trek and Star Wars.

One of the most intriguing is The Three Planeteers, which ran in the January, 1940 issue of Startling Stories. Inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ classic adventure tale, The Three Musketeers, Hamilton’s reinterpretation of the concept brings together an Earthman, John Thorn, allied a pair of friendly aliens, Sual Av of Venus and hulking Mercurian, Gunner Welk, who are out to stop a sinister despot from shifting the balance of power from the peace-loving Alliance of Inner Planets to the planet-hungry League of Cold Worlds. When the resourceful trio are branded interplanetary outlaws, their only hope is to ally themselves with the renegade Companions of Space, led by the bewitching pirate princess, Lana Cain.

This swashbuckling space opera was the type of pulp Hamilton did best, and set the stage for his legendary Captain Future series, also from the publisher of Startling Stories. In that series, as in The Three Planeteers, Hamilton postulated a future Solar System inhabited by distinct races of aliens, each with their own characteristics and cultures. Against this backdrop, the non-stop action races from the inner worlds to the outer regions, with atom-pistols and ray-blasters frying combatants on both sides.

Joey D’Auria voices The Three Planeteers’ stellar cast of heroes and despicable space pirates. This is vintage space opera at its most arresting and audacious! Only $20.98 in a deluxe Six Audio CD set.

William Preston
A new "Old Man" story is coming in late July!

"Unearthed" is coming! The next story in William Preston's pulpish "Old Man" sequence will be on magazine racks and available online in late July. If you missed the earlier stories, "Helping Them Take the Old Man Down" and "Clockworks," you can buy them together in e-book format at either Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

Like "Clockworks," "Unearthed" is a prequel, a novella that takes our hero back to 1925 and his first, life-changing adventure—and resolving some mysteries raised in the previous stories. Two more stories, sequels to the original, are in the works.

Thanks to William Preston for the tip!

Age of Aces
Now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. But America has it’s own unnatural secret weapon: Captain Philip Strange. A mental marvel from birth, he was so terrifyingly effective that the Allies referred to him as “The Phantom Ace of G-2.” But to the Germans he was “The Brain-Devil,” whose penetrating green eyes were both a legend and a nightmare.

Keyhoe’s Philip Strange stories ran for nine years—from 1931 through 1939—in the pages of Flying Aces magazine. This first volume in our new series contains six exciting tales of terror skies! It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

Stories include:
“Cocardes of Courage” – Flying Aces, September 1931
“The Drome of Dread” – Flying Aces, November 1931
“The Red Demon” – Flying Aces, July 1932
“Scourge of the Skies” – Flying Aces, November 1932
“Vengeance of V-99” – Flying Aces, February 1933
“The Unholy Horror” – Flying Aces, July 1933
Plus:
“Donald E. Keyhoe and the Brain-Devil of G-2″ by Sidney H. Bradd
A Bibliography of all Philip Strange’s Adventures
An exciting book design by Chris Kalb.

Amazing Stories
The world's first science fiction magazine returns!

Amazing Stories, the world's first science fiction magazine, will begin its return to regular publication on July 1st with Volume 0, Number 1, the Relaunch Prelaunch issue.

All kinds of wonderful things have been happening at Amazing Stories over the past several months and some of them have prompted a change to the overall plan for Amazing Stories return.

As some of you may recall, I was planning on beginning the funding effort following the presidential elections in November. I'd originally wanted to go for the whole enchilada all at once and scale back from there as necessary.

Recent developments have caused me to accelerate certain aspects of the plan and to modify my approach to launching.

Now the plan is to break the project up into smaller pieces and fund those individually. Instead of scaling back, we'll be building up.

This change has been engendered by a very exciting recent development that will both strengthen Amazing's brand and create a revenue stream. The details of this development will be announced the weekend of July 14-15. The announcement will take place at the San Diego Comic Con (CA) and Readercon (MA) conventions.

I felt that it would be foolish to waste such an opportunity and decided to create the Relaunch Prelaunch issue of Amazing Stories so that there would be somewhere to go and something to look at when the announcement was made.

Since I had already gathered a fair amount of material for the blog, I decided to put it all together and create an issue of the magazine with it. The content ranges from reminisces on Amazing from Robert Silverberg, Barry Malzberg and Patrick L Price, to fiction by Jack Clemons (all of which is being reprinted from earlier renditions of the magazine) to an extensive series of round-robin interviews with 13 of the Book View Cafe authors - Maya Bohnhoff, Brenda Clough, Chris Dolley, katharine E. Kimbriel, Sue Lange, Vonda McIntyre, Linda Nagata, Pati Nagle, Phyllis Radford, Deborah J. Ross, Sarah Smith, Jennifer Stevenson, Judith Tarr and Dave Trowbridge and some (short) editorializing from me.

I think there's plenty of good stuff there that will be released throughout the course of the month. Anyone who hears about Amazing Stories from the announcements (I'll be sending it out to you all as well) will find several pieces to read when they visit and the promise of more to keep them coming back. And this will not be the last Relaunch Prelaunch issue; I've already started getting stuff in for the next one (an essay on Tarzan & Burroughs from John M Whalen) and more on the way (though I am not anywhere close to the three-months-out I ought to be). Hold on to your fiction, but if you've got an interesting article, interview, review, feel free to send it inI. I'm not paying and I can't promise I'll use it, but....

It now seems that the time to pull out all of the stops has arrived a few months earlier than I had originally anticipated. I am now putting together the outline of a Kickstarter (or similar) crowd-funding plan and presentation that will be released in the next couple of months.

In order to make it all work I will need everyone's help.
So what can you do?
Nothing if you'd prefer. Or you could:
Visit the site. Share it with your friends. Comment on something you find there. Link to it. Sign up on the Facebook page.
Say nice things and think good thoughts.

The more Amazing Stories resembles a going concern, the easier it will be to obtain the funding and the closer we will all be to seeing what we want to see, the return of Amazing Stories!

The website and blog can be found here: http://www.amazingstoriesmag.com/
The Facebook Page is here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Amazing-Stories/267141773319031

I have plenty of space on the site to help promote and publicize fellow travelers. If getting a spot up on Amazing's site will help you promote the magazine, please send your artwork and link or get in touch so we can put a plan together. I'm happy to do what I can in return for your support.

And finally
Thank You All for your support, your kind words and your good wishes.

The Year 5865 by Hippolyte Mettais
adapted by Brian Stableford

The Year 5865 was published in 1865. It is a remarkable novel, consisting of a first-person narrative related by a character living 4000 years hence, after various disasters have obliterated almost all the documents relating to the world with which we are familiar. In consequence, the narrator's knowledge of the reader's world is severely limited and densely clouded by myth.

Hippolyte Mettais' innovative literary method in attempting to interpolate didactic material into a melodrama provides an anticipatory echo of a future subgenre of popular fiction: the "lost race" story. But unlike H. Rider Haggard's She (1887), Abraham Merritt's Dwellers in the Mirage (1932) and other classics, here, it is not present-day explorers who find relics of an ancient civilization but futuristic explorers who find echoes of ours.

A remarkable pioneer of futuristic fantasy, The Year 5865 is a uniquely intriguing classic of the genre, log ripe for rediscovery.

The Tower of Destiny by Joseph Méry
adapted by Brian Stableford

In 1799, Bonaparte launched sixty attacks on Saint-Jean-d'Acre and did not capture it. There was a tower there, nicknamed the Infernal Tower, that resisted every assault. Bonaparte evebtually lifted the siege, uttering these words, which no one understood: "The fate of the world resides in that tower." But if Saint-Jean-d'Acre had fallen, Bonaparte would have become Emperor of India, and History would not have recorded neither Austerlitz, nor Waterloo. The Infernal Tower was the Tower of Destiny, Turris fatidica.

Joseph Méry (1798-1866) was the nearest French equivalent to Edgar Allan Poe as a ground-breaking pioneer of speculative fiction. The title piece is a significant exercise in alternate history, in which Méry imagined that Napoleon's life took a different turn in Egypt in 1799. The Truth About Creation argues in a mock-serious manner that there is nothing supernatural about God's creation of the world. The Lunarians, inspired by the New York Sun's famous "moon hoax" of 1835, offers a colorful picture of a Selenite civilization. The Explorations of Victor Hummer describes the rediscovery of a mythical city in Egypt. What We Shall See outlines the Utopian prospects of future human progress and includes some striking imagery of a future Paris, also featured in the classic The Ruins of Paris.

US $22.95 / GBP £14.99
5x8 trade paperback, 280 pages

Night of the Nyctalope is a collection of 17 stories featuring Leo Saint-Clair, France's premier pulp superhero from the 1920s and 1930s. The title piece is a translation of a rare original tale published in 1944 by the character's creator, Jean de La Hire, in which Leo saves a young woman from the clutches of an evil sorcerer in Occupied Paris.

Sixteen other stories, all written especially for this volume, offer more exciting adventures spanning over a century, from Leo's first exploits against dark mystic powers in 1900 Paris, his adventures as an explorer in darkest Africa before WWI, his secret missions on Earth and on Mars during the Great War, his encounter with Dracula before the Fall of Berlin, to his very recent visit at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena...

The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 12-13, 2012!
Greetings fans of The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, 1976-2011.  I'm writing with the best possible news about the future of old time radio fandom in the metro-New York/New Jersey area.  There will be a convention in Newark this fall - if enough of you are willing to participate.

Were you one of the people stalking the halls during that final Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, reveling in the big crowd, exuberant atmosphere and great community?  One of the ones who thought "it would be a shame if this went away forever," or "I hope I get a chance to spend time with these people again."

Well, your wishes have been granted.  Celebrating Audio Theater - Old & New, a brand-new convention, will take place October 12-13, 2012 at the same old Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, NJ that was home to Friends of Old Time Radio all those years.

It will feature live old time radio recreations as well as performances of modern audio drama, and a mix of panels and historical presentations familiar to FOTR attendees.

Please see our website above for a more complete description of what we're up to.  Also please see the "Buy Your Tickets" page and associated PayPal buttons and do so.  CATON is a brand new, volunteer, non-profit organization.  FOTR had a healthy cash cushion saved after 36 years.  CATON has a few contributions from the initial committee members and that's it. If we don't sell at least 200 dinner tickets by July 1, 2012, the event won't happen.  That's the minimum service for the banquet hall at the hotel.

Last year's huge, enthusiastic, FOTR crowd was inspirational.  We know many of you came because it was the "last" event.  We hope that enough of you realized once you came that this community - and the art form that inspired it - is worth saving and perpetuating.

Please join us.

Since this list is comprised of FOTR veterans, I'll predict some of the Q&A but of course, write back with any questions of your own.

Q.  Who's in charge here?
A.  Our overall chairperson is Steven M. Lewis of The Gotham Radio Players. Sean Dougherty (me) is handling marketing, Craig Wichman, a long-time FOTR actor, is handling guest relations.  Maggie Thompson has been acting as secretary and Jill Schissel has been handling the incorporation/legal issues.

Q. What about Jay Hickerson?
A.  Jay is comfortably retired in Florida and while he has given us great advice about how to get the event going, he is not actively involved in CATON.  Also, for anyone who hadn't heard, he suffered a bad fall just after the last FOTR convention.  He is fully healed and doing great.

Q.  Which special guests are you inviting?

A.  It's March so the guest list hasn't started to take shape.  We expect to draw on the New York-city area actors who have participated in FOTR in recent years.  Arthur Anderson of The Mercury Theater and Let's Pretend has agreed to be our honorary chairman for the first event but beyond him it's too early to tell.  Unless we get an overwhelming (and fast) reaction in terms of early ticket sales, it is unlikely we will be able to invite special guests from outside the area but FOTR itself went years before adding West Coast guests.  We are committed to a mix of professional casts as well as providing a forum for talented amateur groups, similar to FOTR.

Q.  So what are you going to do?
A.  We are soliciting proposals now via the website for presentations and performances at CATON.  If you are a historian, actor, director, author, or other person with something to add, please check the site, fill out the form and e-mail us and we'll let you know.  I'd expect to see many familiar faces on stage as well as some new ones as we incorporate the best of modern audio drama into the program.

Q.  What about the dealers?
A.  We're reaching out and seeing who would be interested in selling at this event.  Radio Spirits has already contacted us and expressed interest. Beyond that, well, buy your tickets.  If we can tell dealers that pre-sales are strong, we'll have more of them.

Q.  Why is the new convention only two days instead of four?
A.  The first FOTR convention was only a single day.  Committing to a minimum attendance for a banquet on Thursday night seemed a little too ambitious for a start-up event.

Q.  How many performances do you expect to have?
A.  We discussed that number at the last meeting and depending on how long we want to go in the evening it could be as many as ten in the two days. Keep watching the "2012 Program" page on the website.  Right now, it's empty but it will fill in as we evaluate proposals (as of last Thursday, we already had two to evaluate).

Q.  Will there be a new e-mail list for the new event to which I can also subscribe?

A.  Yes, probably but frankly there isn't one right now.  It's likely the next message to this list will be about that.  In the meantime, our website, twitter feed, the old Friends of Old Time Radio Convention Facebook page, and the new CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew Facebook page, are the best ways to get frequent updates.

Q.  How Can I help?
A.  Forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested.  I'm also putting together a canned "this is Celebrating Audio Theater Old & New" paragraph that bloggers can paste into their sites.  Write me for it, it should be ready by tonight or tomorrow.

Please find "CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew" on Facebook and like us. Please following the @CATOANCON twitter feed.  We know, CATON was taken, so we needed to add the "a."  It's not ideal.

There is a "donate" button on the left side of our website's home page.  If you are feeling especially helpful, please donate to us.  Of course, the best donation would be to buy your tickets now and trust us to deliver the show.  Ticket purchases will be refunded if the convention doesn't occur for any reason.  Donations will be returned only if we didn't need the money for something we couldn't cancel.  If you want us to be able to invite Chuck McCann or Shirley Mitchell from the West Coast, the donate button is really good way to help make that happen.

We also still need volunteers for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity at the event.  If you think you have some time between now and October to help us with marketing, logistics, web design, mailing list administration, event staffing or anything similar, please let us know and we WILL find something for you to do.

Please contact me with any questions.
See you - everyone together now - in Newark in October!

Hard Case Crime - Coming soon!

August 2012!
THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH by Ariel S. Winter
Cover art by Chuck Pyle

A breathtaking first novel written in the form of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.

1931
The body found in the gutter in France led the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her hot-tempered American husband.

1941
A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of a Hollywood starlet.

1951
A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...

Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber.

First publication ever!

THE COCKTAIL WAITRESS

Destined to take its place alongside his other classics, THE COCKTAIL WAITRESS is Cain at his brutal and seductive best.
First publication ever!

A lost, unpublished novel by one of the greatest noir novelists of all time, discovered 35 years after his death
Featuring a 4,000-word afterword by Hard Case Crime editor Charles Ardai discussing the book, its discovery, and the process of editing Cain’s original manuscripts

Hermes Press: Buck Rogers - Howard Chaykin to write and illustrate new adventures!
Hermes Press have signed Howard Chaykin to write and illustrate a new mini-series featuring Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering and the far-flung future.
Over the past five years, Hermes Press has been reprinting the classic Buck Rogers comic strip in archival edition hardcovers.

Chaykin’s new series will take the feature back to its origins and have the look and feel of the “classic” Buck Rogers. Hermes Press publisher Dan Herman believes that the strength of the original newspaper strip is “its great sci-fi tales, characters, and its vision of the future — it’s a great tradition to draw on and this new series will pay homage to the classic version of the newspaper strip.”

Chaykin feels that Buck Rogers is one of the great science-fiction features and is completely revved up about creating a new version of the feature. “When Dan casually asked me whether I had any interest in reviving BUCK ROGERS, my reaction was first physical—genuine goose bumps—followed by complete delight at the thought of paying back a concept that was so utterly seminal in my thinking about our medium and our field.”

Hundreds of years before the hero Hadon sailed forth from his shining city of gold and jewels upon his legendary adventures, the heroine-priestess Lupoeth set out upon the decree of the oracle to discover a new land upon the untamed shores of ancient Africa’s southern sea. But Lupoeth finds herself little prepared for the trials ahead, as well as those that follow upon her heels—for the jealous queen who wants her rival banished has appointed a worshiper of the sun god with a criminal past as the expedition’s priest, hoping to undermine the mission and seal its doom.

Now, lost in the deep jungle, Lupoeth must fight to keep her ill-equipped band of followers alive in the face of deadly beasts, savage Neanderthals, and conspiring enemies. Soon she finds the most accursed deity of her people’s faith, exiled from the empire by the Great Goddess Kho Herself, may be her only ally in this wild land. But Sahhindar, the god of Time and bronze, has a mysterious agenda of his own—one that Lupoeth fears might spell doom not only for her expedition, but for the entire world…

This limited edition novella will be signed by the author, Christopher Paul Carey, coauthor with Philip José Farmer of the third novel in the Khokarsa series. The print run will be determined by the number of preorders we receive by June 30, 2012. A very limited number of copies beyond the preorders will be printed.

Some of the guests announced to date are:

Ron Ely, Doc Savage and Television’s Tarzan
The 15th screen Tarzan (if you don’t count Gordon Griffith) was to have played a Tarzan impersonator in a projected Mike Henry television show, which never materialized. He had been tested 14 months earlier when Henry got the part.

TARZAN AND THE LOST EMPIRE (Tarzan #13) by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Here is Tarzan penetrating a strange land in Africa from which no traveler has ever returned. Natives have told of hills that rise out of a huge void where the great plateau ceases. They have told of white men in armour who have emerged from the abyss to carry off natives into slavery. The roar of life rumbles upward through the canyon like distant thunder. It is toward this land that Erich von Harben, archaeologist, ventures with a party of natives. The natives come back inarticulate with horror, but there is no trace of Von Harben. Then Tarzan sets out alone to hunt for him, moving silently into the jungle. He goes to penetrate the mystery of the Lost Empire, and finds himself fighting for life amid the love, war and intrigue of a forgotten Roman Province. Long available only with censored text, ERBville Press is proud to present the original First Edition book version of this novel in the Tarzan Series.

The story opens with Arthur Delcourt, an American millionaire business man, who, with his wife and three-year-old son, have chartered a yacht and are enjoying a much delayed honeymoon cruise. Following a tropical storm, the yacht strikes a derelict and is wrecked. Arthur Delcourt meets his death when the boats are taken to, but his wife and little son are more fortunate, for they manage to clamber aboard a bit of wreckage. The following day the woman sights a beautiful island; but when the bit of wreckage is gripped by the surf, the woman is devoured by a shark. The child, however, is more fortunate, for he reaches the shore in safety. He, a mere child of three, is the survivor of the fittest! And thus begins a new life for the little waif, for he is found and adopted by Beneiro, the chief of the native village, who believes the child is an answer to recent prayers to the village god, Tsara. The child is named Bantan, meaning white child of the sea of unknown parents.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Resnick Speaks!
On Friday, August 10th, PulpFest guest of honor Mike Resnick
will talk about his many years as an author and editor.
With 2012 being the hundredth anniversary of the start of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ writing career,
it is fitting that our guest of honor is an author who, early in his career,
"wanted nothing more than to write books in the style of Edgar Rice Burroughs" (ERBmania!).

80 Years of Conan the Cimmerian
Although tales of swordsmen and sorcerers had certainly preceded them,
it would be the stories of Robert E. Howard’s Conan of Cimmeria that would popularize the genre,
paving the way for characters such as C. L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry, Henry Kuttner’s Elak of Atlantis,
Fritz Leiber’s Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné,
Karl Edward Wagner’s Kane, and Glen Cook’s Black Company.

Barsoom & Beyond: Mars in the Pulps
Mars, the Red Planet. Edgar Rice Burroughs called it Barsoom and this year marks the
100th anniversary of his "Under the Moons of Mars," originally serialized in Munsey’s The All-Story.
But ERB was one of many authors to write about Mars for the pulps.
On Friday, August 10th, PulpFest’s Ed Hulse will take a look at several visions of Mars
as he moderates a panel called "Barsoom & Beyond: Mars in the Pulps."

Mark Schultz Attending PulpFest 2012
PulpFest is very pleased to announce that author and illustrator Mark Schultz, best known for his
award-winning comics series Xenozoic Tales, will be appearing at the "Summer’s Great Pulp Con" in August.
Mark, along with his friends Jim and Ruth Keegan, will be joining PulpFest 2012 to help celebrate the
80th anniversary of Robert E. Howard’s Conan.

At the Newsstand with Ed Hulse and Garyn G.  Roberts
This summer’s PulpFest will begin almost 75 years to the day after the September 1937 Astounding Stories hit newsstands across the nation. That issue was the first to benefit from the input of John W. Campbell, a pioneering science-fiction writer hired to assist F. Orlin Tremaine, who had been at the magazine’s helm since Street & Smith purchased it from publisher William Clayton in 1933. With Tremaine’s guidance, Astounding had become the preeminent SF pulp, but its best days were yet to come. Just a few months after joining the magazine’s staff, Campbell assumed full editorial control of the monthly and promptly instituted policies that ushered in what later became known as the Golden Age of Science Fiction.

Sid Bradd, RIP (1925 - 2012)
It is with a heavy heart we share news of the passing of Sid Bradd.

Word has reached us today of the passing of Sidney H. Bradd, author, artist, designer and renown aviation historian. Many older readers and those who attend such gatherings as Pulpcon may remember Sid for his articles in such journals as Xenophile where he contributed essays on G-8 and His Battle Aces or other aviation-related pulps. Few would probably know Sid held numerous patents; many households contained appliances Sid designed.

Sid was both a fan of aviation pulps and their heroes as well as a  recognized aviation historian. I was fortunate enough to be able to include Sid's wonderful article "G-8-Flying Spy of the Pulps" in our in-depth tribute to the Popular Publications line of periodicals appearing Windy City Pulp Stores No.11. And his opinions and insight can also be found in the introduction to our title, Wings of War.

Sid had recently come out of retirement to contribute articles to the Age of Aces line of books and website. His biography of author Robert J. Hogan can be read here. I had approached Sid about providing an introduction to our title, Dusty Ayers—Battle of the Black Lightning. Unfortunately time conspired against this happening.

Sid touched the lives of many through his helpful spirit. His thoughtfulness and generosity to share his knowledge contributed to my research, for which I am that much richer.

Appearing on Sid's obituary card is the following verse:

I searched along history's trail
where, sky-pierced now the clouds had broken,
I saw no bird, I saw a plane
no word need to be spoken.
I stood, my eyes turned upward still,
and drank the air, breathed the light.
Then like a hawk upon the wind
I climbed the sky,
I made the fight.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Johanne, and their three daughters on their loss.
