The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 12-13, 2012!
Greetings fans of The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention,
1976-2011. I'm writing with the best possible news about
the future of old time radio fandom in the metro-New York/New
Jersey area. There will be a convention in Newark this fall
- if enough of you are willing to participate. Were you one of the people stalking the halls during that final Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, reveling in the big crowd, exuberant atmosphere and great community? One of the ones who thought "it would be a shame if this went away forever," or "I hope I get a chance to spend time with these people again." Well, your wishes have been granted. Celebrating Audio Theater - Old & New, a brand-new convention, will take place October 12-13, 2012 at the same old Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, NJ that was home to Friends of Old Time Radio all those years. It will feature live old time radio recreations as well as performances of modern audio drama, and a mix of panels and historical presentations familiar to FOTR attendees. Please see our website above for a more complete description of what we're up to. Also please see the "Buy Your Tickets" page and associated PayPal buttons and do so. CATON is a brand new, volunteer, non-profit organization. FOTR had a healthy cash cushion saved after 36 years. CATON has a few contributions from the initial committee members and that's it. If we don't sell at least 200 dinner tickets by July 1, 2012, the event won't happen. That's the minimum service for the banquet hall at the hotel. Last year's huge, enthusiastic, FOTR crowd was inspirational. We know many of you came because it was the "last" event. We hope that enough of you realized once you came that this community - and the art form that inspired it - is worth saving and perpetuating. Please join us. Since this list is comprised of FOTR veterans, I'll predict some of the Q&A but of course, write back with any questions of your own. Q. Who's in charge here? A. Our overall chairperson is Steven M. Lewis of The Gotham Radio Players. Sean Dougherty (me) is handling marketing, Craig Wichman, a long-time FOTR actor, is handling guest relations. Maggie Thompson has been acting as secretary and Jill Schissel has been handling the incorporation/legal issues. Q. What about Jay Hickerson? A. Jay is comfortably retired in Florida and while he has given us great advice about how to get the event going, he is not actively involved in CATON. Also, for anyone who hadn't heard, he suffered a bad fall just after the last FOTR convention. He is fully healed and doing great. Q. Which special guests are you inviting? A. It's March so the guest list hasn't started to take shape. We expect to draw on the New York-city area actors who have participated in FOTR in recent years. Arthur Anderson of The Mercury Theater and Let's Pretend has agreed to be our honorary chairman for the first event but beyond him it's too early to tell. Unless we get an overwhelming (and fast) reaction in terms of early ticket sales, it is unlikely we will be able to invite special guests from outside the area but FOTR itself went years before adding West Coast guests. We are committed to a mix of professional casts as well as providing a forum for talented amateur groups, similar to FOTR. Q. So what are you going to do? A. We are soliciting proposals now via the website for presentations and performances at CATON. If you are a historian, actor, director, author, or other person with something to add, please check the site, fill out the form and e-mail us and we'll let you know. I'd expect to see many familiar faces on stage as well as some new ones as we incorporate the best of modern audio drama into the program. Q. What about the dealers? A. We're reaching out and seeing who would be interested in selling at this event. Radio Spirits has already contacted us and expressed interest. Beyond that, well, buy your tickets. If we can tell dealers that pre-sales are strong, we'll have more of them. Q. Why is the new convention only two days instead of four? A. The first FOTR convention was only a single day. Committing to a minimum attendance for a banquet on Thursday night seemed a little too ambitious for a start-up event. Q. How many performances do you expect to have? A. We discussed that number at the last meeting and depending on how long we want to go in the evening it could be as many as ten in the two days. Keep watching the "2012 Program" page on the website. Right now, it's empty but it will fill in as we evaluate proposals (as of last Thursday, we already had two to evaluate). Q. Will there be a new e-mail list for the new event to which I can also subscribe? A. Yes, probably but frankly there isn't one right now. It's likely the next message to this list will be about that. In the meantime, our website, twitter feed, the old Friends of Old Time Radio Convention Facebook page, and the new CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew Facebook page, are the best ways to get frequent updates. Q. How Can I help? A. Forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested. I'm also putting together a canned "this is Celebrating Audio Theater Old & New" paragraph that bloggers can paste into their sites. Write me for it, it should be ready by tonight or tomorrow. Please find "CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew" on Facebook and like us. Please following the @CATOANCON twitter feed. We know, CATON was taken, so we needed to add the "a." It's not ideal. There is a "donate" button on the left side of our website's home page. If you are feeling especially helpful, please donate to us. Of course, the best donation would be to buy your tickets now and trust us to deliver the show. Ticket purchases will be refunded if the convention doesn't occur for any reason. Donations will be returned only if we didn't need the money for something we couldn't cancel. If you want us to be able to invite Chuck McCann or Shirley Mitchell from the West Coast, the donate button is really good way to help make that happen. We also still need volunteers for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity at the event. If you think you have some time between now and October to help us with marketing, logistics, web design, mailing list administration, event staffing or anything similar, please let us know and we WILL find something for you to do. Please contact me with any questions. See you - everyone together now - in Newark in October! Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

Robert
E. Howard Days - June 8-9, 2012!
Robert E. Howard Days 2012 is happening June 8th and 9th in Cross Plains, Texas, and we’d surely like to see you there! This annual festival to celebrate the life and work of Ol’ Two-Gun Bob Howard features the gathering of Howard fans from all over the world at the very spot where he created all of his marvelous work. Project Pride of Cross Plains, The Robert E. Howard Foundation and the Robert E. Howard United Press Association join forces each June to present two days of REH fellowship and everyone is invited. Come and enjoy tours of the Howard House and the town of Cross Plains, a Bus Tour, a Banquet and a Barbeque, panels, a silent auction, swap meet, a commemorative postal cancellation, plus some special events – and best of all, the opportunity to gather with fellow Howard fans to celebrate his life and legacy. This years is the 80th anniversary of the birth of REH’s most famous creation, Conan of Cimmeria, and we’re having a party! While nobody knows the words to Happy Birthday in the original Cimmerian tongue, there will be cake! (Without the 80 candles – too much of a fire hazard!) So make plans to join us in Cross Plains June 8th and 9th. I’m in the process of getting the fully detailed schedule together, but all of the usual fun activities continue this year. Here’s a short schedule so you can start planning. Hope to see you there! Visit the link
below for a schedule of events and registration information.
