Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction
continues!
The last two auctions close this weekend. Tonight, starting at 7:00 pm eastern time, auction #11 will start to close. One lot per minute, until all 183 lots have been completed. Welcome back to another weekend of auctions
with the Frank M. Robinson Collection. Starting tonight at 7:00
pm Eastern Time, Auction #9 begins to close. A total of 175 lots
with tons of great stuff will close. Titles like ALL-FICTION, AIR
STORIES, ARGOSY and ARGOSY ALL-STORY WEEKLY, DIME DETECTIVE, COWBOY STORIES,
CRIME BUSTERS, COLLEGE STORIES, EVERYBODY'S, PIRATE STORIES, PETE RICE
and so much more. Each auction has it's own special flavor, and great
material. Don't miss out starting now, and ending tonight as the first
lot begins to close at 7:00 pm Eastern Time.
Please be aware that this auction, each lot will now close ONE MINUTE apart, instead of 2 lots per minute. This will give everyone plenty of time to get your bids in. Also, remember that any lot that receives a bid with less than a minute remaining will be extended an additional 3 minutes, and no more bids are received. All other lots will continue to close on time. AUCTION #10 will start closing at 5:00 pm Eastern Time. Plenty of time to get your bids in now. Each lot will close 1 minute apart. Great stuff in this auction as well, with more ARGOSY and ARGOSY ALL-STORY WEEKLY, COMPLETE GANG NOVEL MAGAZINE, DANGER TRAIL, DIME DETECTIVE, DOCTOR DEATH, DUSTY AYRES, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE, SPEAKEASY STORIES, WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE and more. 1) You must be registered
to bid. Please either register, or update your registration by
going to the website: www.adventurehouse.com and click on the
Auction Logo. Then click on the link for the first Auction
and click on the link 'Click Here to Register to Bid.' This
will allow you to either register for the first time, or update your
file, and get your bidder number and password....
2) PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU PLAN ON BIDDING! Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction. For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes. Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount. Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. A scenario could be as follows: Next Bid Required states - $100, the reserve is $300 and you place a bid for $500, then the accepted bid will be $500, not $300. If the reserve has been met, then a second field will be visible under the 'Your Maximum', and this allows you to place a MAX BID allowing our system to bid for you. A suggested scenario: Next Bid Required states - $100, place an initial bid of $100, and continue to place subsequent bids based on the Next Bid Required until you reach the reserve price, or at least as high as you'd like to bid. If you do reach the reserve, then you may place a MAX BID in the 'Your Maximum' bid field, and our system will bid for you. Please DO NOT place a MAX BID under the YOUR BID field. It will accept that as your bid price. If you have made this mistake, please contact us and I'll fix it for you. 3) Searching for an author, or title? Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in? Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers. a) You may use the search function built into the auction site. Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.' You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses. When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid. b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.' This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order. 4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM. 5) All prices at final gavel price, DOES NOT include the BUYERS PREMIUM. The Buyers Premium and credit card fee [if the invoice is paid by credit card or Paypal] will be added on at the end of the auction. The initial invoice will not include the cost of shipping, we will add that once we receive your decision on preferred shipping method. Hope you will find the
pulp of your dreams!

Tarzan - New feature film in the works! Constantin Film’s Tarzan movie has been quietly been in development but is now entering the casting stage. Kellan Lutz, co-star of the Twilight movies, has signed on to star as the title character and Spencer Locke, perhaps best known for playing K-Mart in Constantin’s Resident Evil movies, has nabbed the role of Jane Porter. The movie will be a performance-capture 3D production. Tarzan is the child of billionaire entrepreneurs who die in a plan crash. Their company, Greystoke Industries is then taken over by a villainous type, later to become Tarzan’s antagonist. Jane is the daughter of an African guide. She is, of course, a conservationist. Ultimately she’ll team up with Tarzan to fight an army of mercenaries paid by Greystoke Industries. |

Tony DeZuniga (1941 – May
11, 2012) Tony DeZuniga, co-creator of Jonah Hex and The Black Orchid, has passed away at age 71. He suffered a stroke in April and had been battling a series of health problems since then. Tony entered the flourishing comic book industry in The Philippines in 1957, working as a letterer to finance his college education at the University of Santa Tomas. He was a seminal figure in the “Filipino Invasion” of the ’70s and ’80s which saw artists like Nestor Redondo, Alex Nino, and Alfredo Alcala entering the U.S. market. He helped introduce many of the artists to US editors and then served as an agent for several years. Tony is best known to pulp fans for his work on Doc Savage and Conan for Marvel Comics. |

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction
continues!
6) All auctions, #9 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids. Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times: Frank M. Robinson Auction #9 May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #10 ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #11 May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #12 May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Hope you will find the

The Friends of Old
Time Radio Convention - October 12-13, 2012! Greetings fans of The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, 1976-2011. I'm writing with the best possible news about the future of old time radio fandom in the metro-New York/New Jersey area. There will be a convention in Newark this fall - if enough of you are willing to participate. Were you one of the people stalking the halls during that final Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, reveling in the big crowd, exuberant atmosphere and great community? One of the ones who thought "it would be a shame if this went away forever," or "I hope I get a chance to spend time with these people again." Well, your wishes have been granted. Celebrating Audio Theater - Old & New, a brand-new convention, will take place October 12-13, 2012 at the same old Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, NJ that was home to Friends of Old Time Radio all those years. It will feature live old time radio recreations as well as performances of modern audio drama, and a mix of panels and historical presentations familiar to FOTR attendees. Please see our website above for a more complete description of what we're up to. Also please see the "Buy Your Tickets" page and associated PayPal buttons and do so. CATON is a brand new, volunteer, non-profit organization. FOTR had a healthy cash cushion saved after 36 years. CATON has a few contributions from the initial committee members and that's it. If we don't sell at least 200 dinner tickets by July 1, 2012, the event won't happen. That's the minimum service for the banquet hall at the hotel. Last year's huge, enthusiastic, FOTR crowd was inspirational. We know many of you came because it was the "last" event. We hope that enough of you realized once you came that this community - and the art form that inspired it - is worth saving and perpetuating. Please join us. Since this list is comprised of FOTR veterans, I'll predict some of the Q&A but of course, write back with any questions of your own. Q. Who's in charge here? A. Our overall chairperson is Steven M. Lewis of The Gotham Radio Players. Sean Dougherty (me) is handling marketing, Craig Wichman, a long-time FOTR actor, is handling guest relations. Maggie Thompson has been acting as secretary and Jill Schissel has been handling the incorporation/legal issues. Q. What about Jay Hickerson? A. Jay is comfortably retired in Florida and while he has given us great advice about how to get the event going, he is not actively involved in CATON. Also, for anyone who hadn't heard, he suffered a bad fall just after the last FOTR convention. He is fully healed and doing great. Q. Which special guests are you inviting? A. It's March so the guest list hasn't started to take shape. We expect to draw on the New York-city area actors who have participated in FOTR in recent years. Arthur Anderson of The Mercury Theater and Let's Pretend has agreed to be our honorary chairman for the first event but beyond him it's too early to tell. Unless we get an overwhelming (and fast) reaction in terms of early ticket sales, it is unlikely we will be able to invite special guests from outside the area but FOTR itself went years before adding West Coast guests. We are committed to a mix of professional casts as well as providing a forum for talented amateur groups, similar to FOTR. Q. So what are you going to do? A. We are soliciting proposals now via the website for presentations and performances at CATON. If you are a historian, actor, director, author, or other person with something to add, please check the site, fill out the form and e-mail us and we'll let you know. I'd expect to see many familiar faces on stage as well as some new ones as we incorporate the best of modern audio drama into the program. Q. What about the dealers? A. We're reaching out and seeing who would be interested in selling at this event. Radio Spirits has already contacted us and expressed interest. Beyond that, well, buy your tickets. If we can tell dealers that pre-sales are strong, we'll have more of them. Q. Why is the new convention only two days instead of four? A. The first FOTR convention was only a single day. Committing to a minimum attendance for a banquet on Thursday night seemed a little too ambitious for a start-up event. Q. How many performances do you expect to have? A. We discussed that number at the last meeting and depending on how long we want to go in the evening it could be as many as ten in the two days. Keep watching the "2012 Program" page on the website. Right now, it's empty but it will fill in as we evaluate proposals (as of last Thursday, we already had two to evaluate). Q. Will there be a new e-mail list for the new event to which I can also subscribe? A. Yes, probably but frankly there isn't one right now. It's likely the next message to this list will be about that. In the meantime, our website, twitter feed, the old Friends of Old Time Radio Convention Facebook page, and the new CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew Facebook page, are the best ways to get frequent updates. Q. How Can I help? A. Forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested. I'm also putting together a canned "this is Celebrating Audio Theater Old & New" paragraph that bloggers can paste into their sites. Write me for it, it should be ready by tonight or tomorrow. Please find "CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew" on Facebook and like us. Please following the @CATOANCON twitter feed. We know, CATON was taken, so we needed to add the "a." It's not ideal. There is a "donate" button on the left side of our website's home page. If you are feeling especially helpful, please donate to us. Of course, the best donation would be to buy your tickets now and trust us to deliver the show. Ticket purchases will be refunded if the convention doesn't occur for any reason. Donations will be returned only if we didn't need the money for something we couldn't cancel. If you want us to be able to invite Chuck McCann or Shirley Mitchell from the West Coast, the donate button is really good way to help make that happen. We also still need volunteers for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity at the event. If you think you have some time between now and October to help us with marketing, logistics, web design, mailing list administration, event staffing or anything similar, please let us know and we WILL find something for you to do. Please contact me with any questions. See you - everyone together now - in Newark in October! Hard Case Crime -
Coming in 2012!
69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block Cover art by Robert McGinnis 69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman. It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite. From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it. STRANGE EMBRACE: They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might. It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life! Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation. June 2012! JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH
HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!
Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave... First publication ever!
August 2012! THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH by Ariel S. Winter Cover art by Chuck Pyle A breathtaking first novel written in the form
of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned
in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.
1931
The body found in the gutter in France led
the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her
hot-tempered American husband.
1941
A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s
leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of
a Hollywood starlet.1951
A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption
finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber. First publication ever!

Pulp Magazines Project
- Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

Pulp Newsgroups - Now online! There are numerous pulp newsgroups that are of potential interest to pulp fans. Information on several of these groups and a link to sign up is posted below. Abraham Merritt: This group is dedicated to all of the fiction of ABRAHAM MERRITT. Merritt's novels, short stories, paperbacks, hardcovers, pulps, reprints, and any movies based on these works can all be discussed here. Also, any artwork from any of the above pertaining to Merritt's writing can be discussed and displayed. If interested, questions and statements about other authors that copied or imitated Merritt's style can be posted. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ABEMERRITTFANS/ CoverUps: Sharing and trading of Pulp Fiction covers. Discussion not only allowed, but encouraged! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Cover_Ups/ Doc Con: The annual Doc Savage Convention gathered together for the first time on October 24, 1998. Robert E. Howard Days - June 2012! Only seven weeks to go until Robert E. Howard Days 2012 in beautiful Cross Plains, Texas. There’s still plenty of time to send in your pre-registration and make plans to attend to best two days in Howard fandom. If you check the REH DAYS 2012 page (tab at the top), you’ll find a few revisions for your attendance pleasure. Here’s a partial list. 1. The Friday night Celebration Banquet has been moved to the Baptist Church Family Life Center, which is one block north of the Library. There’s three times as much space there, so Project Pride won’t be limited to a certain amount of seats. (But please pre-register so they know how many are coming!) Dinner is chicken-fried steak with all the fixin’s! 2. The Howard House and Museum will be open on Thursday June 7th from 2-4 pm. No docents will be on duty, but you may take a tour and stop in the Gift Shop! This will get you early access to the new REH Museum t-shirt, among other great REH gifts! 3. There WILL be a panel at 9:00 pm on Friday night after the Banquet/Silent Auction/REH Foundation Awards at the church. FISTS AT THE ICE HOUSE will be presented by REH boxing experts Mark Finn and Chris Gruber with assistance from Jeff Shanks. This will take place AT the old Ice House on Main Street (well, on the empty concrete slab behind it). Bring your flashlights. We’re trying something new this year – and yes, we have permission… 4. There will again be some extemporaneous REH (only) poetry reading under the street light in the back yard of the House on Friday night. We’re calling it REH Streetlamp Poetry. 5. PLEASE donate REH items to the Silent Auction. You can send them to: Project Pride, POB 534, Cross Plains, TX 76443, or bring them to the Howard House by 3 pm Friday afternoon during Howard Days. Hope to see both familiar and new faces under the wonderful Texas sky in a few more weeks. It’s like a big family reunion of Howard fans, so y’all come. Any questions: e-mail “Indy” Bill Cavalier at 2cavaliers@sbcglobal.net. |
