SGT.JANUS – SPIRIT BREAKER

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the debut of the newest occult investigator in the grand tradition as such notable pulp heroes as William Hodgson Hope’s Carnacki, Seabury Quinn’s Jules de Grandin, Manly Wade Wellman’s John Thunstone and the popular Ravenwood, Stepson of Mystery.

Situated in the rural back country of Edwardian England is an old, mysterious house whose unique owner earns his living as a Spirit-Breaker, a hunter of ghosts.  A former military veteran, Sgt.Roman Janus has devoted his life to aid those haunted, both emotionally and physically by obsessive wraiths whose spirits are still anchored to our world.

Sgt.Janus – Spirit Breaker is the creation of new pulp writer Jim Beard.  Part detective, part occultist, Janus is himself a man of mystery whose own past is shrouded and the motivations behind his calling kept hidden.  Within this volume you will find eight tales as narrated by his clients, each with his or her own perspective on this uncanny hero and his amazing career. Filled with suspense, terror and agonizing pathos, each a solid mesmerizing journey into the unknown world beyond.

Featuring a cover by artist Jeff Herndon and eight stunning illustrations by Eric Johns, with design work by Pulp Factory Award winning Art Director, Rob Davis and edited by Managing Editor Ron Fortier, Sgt.Janus – Spirit Breaker is the first in a new series by one of today’s leading stars in New Pulp Fiction.

“…Beard’s fiction is anything but pat and routine. While he may deliberately conjure the spirits of authors of Victorian and Edwardian occult fiction before him, Beard’s prose is fresh and entirely modern in his, at times, frank and unsettling tales of the wages of his characters’ past sins. Each story breezes by and like the best tales told round the campfire, it leaves the reader hungry for more.”

Doc Savage in THE INFERNAL BUDDHA
Softcover & ebook editions - Now available!
Hardcover edition coming soon!
Coming to comic shops in August!

Altus Press is proud to announce the release of the third volume in its acclaimed Wild Adventures of Doc Savage series, written by Will Murray and Lester Dent, writing as Kenneth Robeson.

Set in the Fall of 1936, THE INFERNAL BUDDHA tells the epic story of Doc Savage's desperate quest to control the Buddha of Ice, a relic of unknown origin—and
what may become the most dangerous object on Earth!

When a mummy arrives at Doc Savage's New York headquarters wearing the clothes of his missing assistant, engineer Renny Renwick, Doc, Monk, and Ham rush to Singapore where they get on the trail of a swashbuckling pirate who calls himself  the Scourge of the South China Sea, in whose hands a piece of the infernal Buddha has fallen. The trail leads to Pirate Island, the fate of Renny, and a mysterious box
containing a terrible, unstoppable power.

But that is only the beginning of the quest into which the Man of Bronze plunges—one that will take him to the upper reaches of the Yellow Sea and a series of wild ocean battles against the vicious factions fighting for control on the infernal Buddha.

Before it is all over, every human life on Earth will tremble on the brink of eternity, and Doc Savage will face his greatest test.

"This may be my wildest Doc novel to date," says author Will Murray. "THE INFERNAL BUDDHA is a fantasy epic full of corsairs, criminals and other culprits. The menace is planetary. The threat, extinction. Doc Savage has a reputation for saving the world. This time he does it on the greatest scale possible. I began this book back in 1992, working from an opening situation Lester Dent started in 1935. Together, we have produced a true Doc Savage epic. And it only took about 75 years…."

THE INFERNAL BUDDHA will be released as a trade paperback and e-book in May, with the hardcover edition following in June. All editions will feature a startling cover painted by Joe DeVito, depicting Doc Savage as the Buccaneer of Bronze! This cover was painted from a still taken in 1964 of legendary model Steve Holland, and is a variant pose shot for famed illustrator James Bama's classic cover to THE MAN ON BRONZE. There has never been a Doc cover like it!

The hardcover edition will include two bonus features—an Afterword by Will Murray detailing the creation of this story, and a memoir by James Bama of his days painting the Bantam Books Doc covers.

THE UNOFFICIAL AND UNAUTHORIZED GUIDE TO 100 YEARS OF TARZAN
Coming in September!

In October 1912, readers of The All-Story magazine were enthralled by Edgar Rice Burroughs' tale of John Clayton, an orphaned English lord given a simian upbringing in the African jungle who went on to reclaim his birth-right in civilisation while maintaining one foot in the savage land he had conquered. This book traces Tarzan's history in prose, film, comic strips, comic books, radio, stage, television, computer games and merchandise, charting the rise of one of the most popular and iconic characters in fiction. The book also examines the massive changes in public attitudes towards Africa, race, hereditary peers and wildlife conservation over the past century.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER / MURANIA PRESS
BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #31 / 32
Now available!

This special book-length (234 pages) double issue is our most ambitious yet. The main feature is a 22,000-word essay on Zane Grey and his involvement with Hollywood, illustrated with more than 60 rare photos. Other articles cover Tom Mix’s silent-movie adaptations of Max Brand novels, the evolution of Western fiction in pulp magazines, the making of Republic’s 1938 cliffhanger serial featuring the Lone Ranger, an overview of the Doubleday-published pulp titled WEST, and a behind-the-scenes report on the discovery and marketing of Roy Rogers. Finally—and this last item would be worth the price alone—we reprint a classic 1919 Western novella by Stewart Edward White, THE KILLER, which has been out of print for decades and was the inspiration for the 1932 George O’Brien Western titled MYSTERY RANCH. At 36,000 words, this thrilling yarn deserves publication as a standalone book, but we’ve included it as bonus material! There are nearly 100 movie photos reproduced in this issue, with nearly as many pulp covers and original pieces of art by such well-known Western illustrators as Walter M. Baumhofer, Tom Lovell, and Gayle Hoskins, to name just a few.

$21.95 plus $5.00 shipping.

The Spring 2012 issue features a Will Murray article—almost a psychoanalysis—on the Spider, pulpdom’s most emotionally complex hero. BnT editor Ed Hulse offers a detailed, behind-the-scenes look at the 1940 cliffhanger serial starring Victor Jory as The Shadow. Old-Time Radio historian Martin Grams Jr. presents a comprehensive overview of the short-lived 1948 Green Lama radio series based on Ken Crossen’s pulp hero. A 1941 writers-magazine article by Frank Gruber stresses the importance of invention in plotting mysteries. A classic hard-boiled detective story (William E. Barrett’s “The Mobster Man” from 1933) and several departments round out the issue, which has the usual complement of rare photos, pulp covers, and original artwork.

CLASSIC PULP REPRINTS #2:
BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS, by J. Allan Dunn
Now available!

By reader acclimation, this 1921 novel was among the most popular ever published in the legendary pulp magazine ADVENTURE. It appears in book form for the first time in a Murania Press edition that also reprints a special introduction written by Dunn himself and ADVENTURE editor Arthur Sullivant Hoffman. It also boasts a cover by N. C. Wyeth. After being shipwrecked, nine average men of varying backgrounds finally reach land. With no tools, weapons, or supplies—not even a pocketknife or a watch-crystal among them—the castaways realize they can endure isolation only by working as a team and making ingenious use of their limited knowledge. But Nature’s most hostile forces are arrayed against them, and when prolonged privation eventually drives one of the nine mad, their chances of survival are further diminished.

$19.95 plus $4.00 shipping.

Fantom Press
Showcase Presents Doc Savage
Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze
Last chance for signed copies!

When veteran comic artist Tony DeZuniga fell ill last month, Fantom Press reached out to his wife Tina to see if there was anything they could do to help.

Tony and Tina live in Central California up to 2007 when they first moved to Southern California and then finally to the Philippines two years ago where Tony officially retired from comics.  Fantom Press was lucky to get to know Tony and get a couple of great commissions from him, one of which was used on the book plate for the signed edition of the Showcase Doc Savage volume released last year.

Fantom Press contacted comic's legend Neal Adams and spread the word about the family's financial crisis. The DeZunigas didn't have health insurance and unlike hospitals in the United States, they had to provide a deposit a couple of times a week to the hospital in order to receive the proper care.

Fantom Press' postings were picked up by several news agencies and within 48 hours, over 10K had been sent via PayPal to Tina, mostly by comic fans they had never met, and Tony received the proper treatment in his final days.

Even though Tony has passed, his family still needs to pay medical bills as well as for his funeral costs.
Fantom Press has less than 20 copies of the signed edition of Showcase Doc Savage that includes a book plate signed by Tony, as well as Val Mayerik, Ernie Chan, and Doug Moench.

100% of the profits for the sales will be given to Tina DeZuniga as well as 50% of the profits from the sales for any other in-stock items on site through June 1st, with the other half being contributed to the Larkin family as usual.

I made the same offer to the comic collecting community when Tony first fell ill and sold the 20 copies I had in stock. This will be your last chance to get something signed by this great artist, so I would urge you to act quickly is you want a copy.

Ernie Chan, along with Roy Thomas, Steve Englehart, Rich Buckler, Tom Palmer, and Tony Isabella, signed book plates for the collected edition of the Marvel color comics, Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze.

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction continues!

The last two auctions close this weekend.
Tonight, starting at 7:00 pm eastern time, auction #11 will start to close.
One lot per minute, until all 183 lots have been completed.

Welcome back to another weekend of auctions with the Frank M. Robinson Collection.  Starting tonight at 7:00 pm Eastern Time, Auction #9 begins to close.  A total of 175 lots with tons of great stuff will close.  Titles like ALL-FICTION, AIR STORIES, ARGOSY and ARGOSY ALL-STORY WEEKLY, DIME DETECTIVE, COWBOY STORIES, CRIME BUSTERS, COLLEGE STORIES, EVERYBODY'S, PIRATE STORIES, PETE RICE and so much more.  Each auction has it's own special flavor, and great material.  Don't miss out starting now, and ending tonight as the first lot begins to close at 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

Please be aware that this auction, each lot will now close ONE MINUTE apart, instead of 2 lots per minute.  This will give everyone plenty of time to get your bids in.  Also, remember that any lot that receives a bid with less than a minute remaining will be extended an additional 3 minutes, and no more bids are received.  All other lots will continue to close on time.

AUCTION #10 will start closing at 5:00 pm Eastern Time.  Plenty of time to get your bids in now.  Each lot will close 1 minute apart.  Great stuff in this auction as well, with more ARGOSY and ARGOSY ALL-STORY WEEKLY, COMPLETE GANG NOVEL MAGAZINE, DANGER TRAIL, DIME DETECTIVE, DOCTOR DEATH, DUSTY AYRES, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE, SPEAKEASY STORIES, WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE and more.

1) You must be registered to bid.  Please either register, or update your registration by going to the website: www.adventurehouse.com and click on the Auction Logo.  Then click on the link for the first Auction and click on the link 'Click Here to Register to Bid.'  This will allow you to either register for the first time, or update your file, and get your bidder number and password....

2) PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU PLAN ON BIDDING! Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction.  For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes.  Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount.  Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. A scenario could be as follows:

Next Bid Required states - $100, the reserve is $300 and you place a bid for $500, then the accepted bid will be $500, not $300.

If the reserve has been met, then a second field will be visible under the 'Your Maximum', and this allows you to place a MAX BID allowing our system to bid for you.  A suggested scenario:

Next Bid Required states - $100, place an initial bid of $100, and continue to place subsequent bids based on the Next Bid Required until you reach the reserve price, or at least as high as you'd like to bid.  If you do reach the reserve, then you may place a MAX BID in the 'Your Maximum' bid field, and our system will bid for you.

Please DO NOT place a MAX BID under the YOUR BID field.  It will accept that as your bid price.  If you have made this mistake, please contact us and I'll fix it for you.

3) Searching for an author, or title?  Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in?  Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers.  a) You may use the search function built into the auction site.  Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.'  You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses.  When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid.  b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.'  This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order.

4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM.

5) All prices at final gavel price, DOES NOT include the BUYERS PREMIUM.  The Buyers Premium and credit card fee [if the invoice is paid by credit card or Paypal] will be added on at the end of the auction.  The initial invoice will not include the cost of shipping, we will add that once we receive your decision on preferred shipping method.

Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams!

Michael Knox is the brash and arrogant assistant of renowned archaeologist Dr. Spiridon Simos. A chance encounter with a beautiful Egyptian woman at Dr. Simos' wedding in Corfu leads the young man on a whirlwind journey to Cairo where he barely survives the terrifying reincarnation of the ancient Pharaoh Khunum-Khufu.

A chain of events quickly unfold that embroils Knox with obsessive British agent, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and his pursuit of the master criminal, Dr. Fu Manchu. Slowly, the young man begins to piece together the threat posed to the world as Fu Manchu and his seductive, but sadistic daughter Koreani tear the dread secret society, the Si-Fan, apart.

Before Michael Knox can act on the intelligence in his possession, he must first survive death in a myriad of strange guises from a savage gorilla trained to crush a man's spine to the unrelenting pursuit of Margarita, the disarming dwarf assassin who brings terror to the Orient Express, to one thousand poisonous butterflies unleashed at the Munich Conference as Europe teeters on the brink of a Second World War.

As madness sweeps the globe, one hedonistic young man must examine his own life as he realizes the world's future hangs in the balance. The action moves swiftly from Greece to Egypt to Africa to Europe in a breathtaking battle of ideologies as Sax Rohmer's infamous creation seeks to realize THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU...

Radio Archives
FREE Download: Weird Tales Radio Show

“Weird Tales” was a proposed radio series recorded in Hollywood in 1932 and based on stories in the famous horror themed Pulp of the same name, notable for featuring such iconic authors as Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. The series was produced by Hollywood Radio Attractions, 4376 Sunset Drive, Hollywood. In a promotional flyer for the program, they advertise three episodes that had been produced and the company was planning to record a total of 52 half-hour shows.

Scholars looking at the history of “Weird Tales” magazine have heard about the series for years, but no recordings of the shows themselves or many detail about the series have surfaced until now.

Radio Archives is giving you a chance to hear an episode of Weird Tales for Free! Similar to “The Witch’s Tale”, the show was created in such a way that they could be played as one half-hour program each week or split into two fifteen minute shows, completing one story each week. Click the Weird Tales Banner and listen to the Weird Tales radio show today!

The series (or proposed series) was produced by Hollywood Radio Attractions, 4376 Sunset Drive, Hollywood.  In a promotional flyer for the program, they advertise three episodes that had been produced - the company was planning to record a total of 52 half-hour shows.  Similar to "The Witch's Tale", the show was created in such a way that they could be played as one half-hour program each week or split into two fifteen minute shows, completing one story each week.  So, what you're hearing is part two of "The Mystery of Nagara", which, if run on-air, could be run as a self-contained fifteen minute show, likely with an introduction and commercial by a local announcer.

This disc, seems to be the only discs that survive from the series.  The other shows would have been a fascinating listen - they got some top Hollywood acting talent for the programs.  Here's a rundown of the episodes listed as being available in the flyer:

Program 1 - "The Living Dead", based on Kirk Mashburn's Novellete, "De Brignac's Lady" with Jason Robards, William Farnum, Viola Dana, Richard Tucker, John Ince, Wally Reid, Jr. and featuring music by the "Mata Hari Orchestra direct from Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood, California"

Program 2 - "The Curse of Nagana", from Hugh B. Cave's short story "The Ghoul Gallery" with Richard Carle, Johnny Harron, Florence Britton, Cyrill Delavante, John Ince, Pierre White, Lucille Amaya with music by an "Arabian Orchestra".

Program 3 - "The Three from the Tomb", from a novel by Edmund Hamilton with William Farnum, Bert Roach, Prisicilla Dean, Pat O'Malley, John Ince, Frank Glendon and Robert Hoover.

The Spider #13 - Builders of the Black Empire
By what strange twist of Fate did the fearful menace which was to shadow every man and woman in New York City first rear its venomous head in the distant Caribbean? When terror suddenly boarded a little tramp steamer and left crimson havoc littering its narrow decks a spluttering wireless flashed the doom of every living thing aboard. Within a week, the same ghastly fate struck a gigantic new ocean liner, its luxurious cabins occupied by the elite and powerful of a dozen different nations! Death — swift and terrible — rode the ocean lanes. And the Spider — taken for once off guard — was supposedly dying in a hospital room on the very day when that terror from the seas first showed itself in all its terror above the city skyline. How can the Spider, fighting death himself, help the nation he loves in her hour of greatest need?

The Spider #16 - The City Destroyer
Thousands of busy persons bent over their desks in the tallest building in the world — conducting the commerce of the nation — when suddenly the steel girders began to creak and twist, and the gigantic edifice swayed giddily in the rising wind. Never before had criminal brains devised a more cunning or a more horrible weapon to garner their ill-gotten treasures. And never before was the Spider so strenuously put to test — for the Master, the man behind the devastation and death, eluded every suspicion, foresaw every contingency, left no tell-tale clues behind him as he ravaged, slayed and pillaged… Richard Wentworth, working for once hand in hand with the organized forces of law and order, fights the grimmest battle of his long career. Can the Spider avenge the countless dead who have already fallen? Can he bring the Murder Master to the justice he so richly deserves?

As a special Bonus, Will Murray has written “Meet the Spider” especially for this series of eBooks.

FROM OUT OF THE SHADOWS: THE STORY OF BRET MORRISON
By Elizabeth McLeod

The following article, written by radio historian Elizabeth McLeod, is presented in celebration of the 100th birthday of Bret Morrison on May 5th.
His was one of the iconic voices of the radio era.

Crackling out of the ether at half past five every Sunday afternoon, the reinforced-concrete sneer of The Shadow declared his knowledge of the Evil that Lurked in The Hearts of Men, and gave the medium perhaps its single most memorable signature. Even people who've never actually listened to a vintage radio program all the way through have, perhaps buried deep in their subconscious memory, some awareness of that voice, that laugh.

Any old-time-radio buff with a laptop and an internet connection, or even a well-thumbed paperback copy of The Big Broadcast can probably come up with the names off the top of their head. "Orson Welles, Bill Johnstone, Steve Courtleigh, John Archer..." they'll recite, with perhaps the completists among them throwing in Frank Readick, James LaCurto, and Carl Kroenke. And then they'll sum up with, "...and the longest-lasting Shadow, Bret Morrison."

That's all he's remembered for, really, in the great scope of radio history. Bret Morrison was The Shadow. He played the role from 1944 to 1954, and reprised it for phonograph records as late as 1968. And when he died in 1978, those newspapers that carried his obituary invariably described him as "Radio's Shadow." It's the role that's remembered, not the man.

But, there was more to Bret Morrison than a menacing laugh and a threatening, filtered voice. He was a versatile actor who made a name for himself in the competitive world of pre-war radio long before donning the Shadow's cloak. Chicago was the cradle of radio drama when he began his career in the late 1920's, while still a high school student. His career carried him from studio to studio, station to station, network to network, from Chicago to Hollywood, wherever a versatile voice was needed. He was cast in everything from daytime serials to nighttime boy-meets-girl anthologies, from the glossy Lux Radio Theatre to the outré experiments of Arch Oboler. But he never became a star, which was the best thing that could have happened to his career...

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction continues!

6) All auctions, #11 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times:

Frank M. Robinson Auction #11
May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #12
May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern
Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams!

Doc Savage in THE INFERNAL BUDDHA
Softcover & ebook editions - Now available!
Hardcover edition will follow in June!

Subscriber copies should start mailing next week.

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #33
Now available!

$11.95 plus $2.50 shipping.

Note: The Murania Press website still has a few glitches
but will be on line and fully operational this coming week.

Tarzan - New feature film in the works!
Constantin Film’s Tarzan movie has been quietly been in development but is now entering the casting stage.

Kellan Lutz, co-star of the Twilight movies, has signed on to star as the title character and Spencer Locke, perhaps best known for playing K-Mart in Constantin’s Resident Evil movies, has nabbed the role of Jane Porter. The movie will be a performance-capture 3D production.

Tarzan is the child of billionaire entrepreneurs who die in a plan crash. Their company, Greystoke Industries is then taken over by a villainous type, later to become Tarzan’s antagonist. Jane is the daughter of an African guide. She is, of course, a conservationist. Ultimately she’ll team up with Tarzan to fight an army of mercenaries paid by Greystoke Industries.

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction continues!

6) All auctions, #9 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times:

Frank M. Robinson Auction #9
May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #10
ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #11
May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #12

Audiocomics: The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War!
Now available on iTUNES!

AudioComics Pulp is proud to announce the first episode in its Pulp Adventures series: The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War. Created by Lars Anderson in the pages of Saucy Romantic Adventures and Mystery Adventures, The Domino Lady is the alter-ego of Ellen Patrick, a wealthy UC Berkeley graduate out to avenge the murder of her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, in the Raymond Chandler-esque Southern California of 1935. While she brandished a .45 and syringe of knockout serum, her greatest weapon was her sexuality, which she would use to disarm her unsuspecting opponents. Routinely stealing from her targets, she donates most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, leaving a calling card with the words “Compliments of the Domino Lady” behind.

Domino Lady appeared specifically in “spicy pulp” magazines, pulps that typically featured semi-pornographic short stories. Such magazines had smaller print runs (and were as a result a few cents higher in price) and were usually sold “under the counter” upon request. Only a handful of Domino Lady

were published, all of which were collected in Bold Venture Press’ Compliments of the Domino Lady, featuring a cover from the one and only Jim Steranko. Now, for the first time ever in both pulp and audio history, the Domino Lady rides the radio waves as Ellen Patrick’s alter-ego makes her first appearance in 1935 San Diego, investigating the disappearance of an actual one million dollar bill from an International Exposition. Complication: the head of security is her cocky ex-boyfriend…

The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War was recorded on November 19, 2011 in San Francisco, CA.

THE DOMINION OF THE WORLD
by Gustave Le Rouge & Gustave Guitton
adapted by Brian Stableford

Volume 1. The Plutocratic Plot

The Dominion of the World (1900) represents a transition from classic Vernian anticipation to the pulp serials of the 1920s and 1930s. It is also the only science fiction work that sought to dramatize the "Transatlantic Peril", positing a fundamental difference of culture and attitude between the United States and Europe. Despite some of its outlandishness, hindsight has lent the world imagined by Gustave Guitton and Gustave Le Rouge (The Vampires of Mars) a certain prophetic quality.

A secret cabal of American billionaires, led by William Boltyn, would like nothing more than to crush Europe, or at least subject it to harsh economic domination, and eventually become masters of the world. To that end, they scheme to use a deadly array of highly advanced weapons invented by Engineer Hattison and an army of psychics under the command of the sinister Harry Madge. Their grand plan, however, is opposed by the heroic endeavors of a handful of Frenchmen...

Contents: La Conspiration des Milliardaires [The Billionaires' Conspiracy] (1899)
Introduction and notes by Brian Stableford

US $20.95 / GBP £12.99
5x8 trade paperback, 248 pages

In the second volume of the series, as France seemed headed for war with England over colonial disputes in Africa, the secret cabal of American billionaires, led by William Boltyn, schemes to stop French scientist Arsène Golbert from completing his plans for a subatlantic railway. Meanwhile, in his secret citadel of science hidden in the Rocky Mountains, mad engineer Hattison has created an invincible army of "iron men", robots that will ensure the billionaires' victory...

Thomas Sigismund Stribling (1881-1965) penned many short works for the periodicals of his day—adventure, satirical, boys adventure, detective and science fiction—which appeared in Everybody's, The Century Magazine, Holland's Magazine, Youth's Companion, American Boy and Adventure. For the later, he is well remembered as the author of a series of detective stories featuring psychologist sleuth Doctor Poggioli.

Ripped from the pages of Adventure are two unreprinted short novels of science fiction, "Web of the Sun" and "The Green Splotches."

But the short story form could not corral the ambitious T.S. Stribling who would win the 1933 Pulizer Prize for the Novel for his work, "The Store."

DEJAH THORIS & THE WHITE APES OF MARS #2
Arriving in comic shops May 9!
(Writer) Mark Rahner (Art) Lui Antonio
(Cover) Brandon Peterson, Alé Garza (1-in-10)

First they were forced to watch from hiding while the men in her party were torn apart and eaten by white apes. Now an unarmed and vastly outnumbered Princess Dejah Thoris and her female friends must flee for their own lives in an ancient, dead city! The apes are still hungry. No-holds-barred horror and suspense like you've never seen in John Carter's world, by "Rotten" creator Mark Rahner. And it just keeps getting worse.

DRUMS OF FU MANCHU
Now available!

Transferred from a film master made from the
original Republic Pictures Archive print
and
with an introduction by Fu Manchu author William Patrick Maynard.

REPUBLIC 1940 / 15 Chapters
Directed by: William Witney, John English
Starring: Henry Brandon as Dr. Fu Manchu
William Royle as Sir Nayland Smith
Robert Kellard as Allan Parker

Supporting Cast: Gloria Franklin as Fah Lo Suee, Olaf Hytten as Dr. Petrie, Tom Chatterton as Professor Randolph, Luana Walters as Mary Randolph, Lal Chend Mehra as Sirdar Prahin, George Cleveland as Professor Parker, John Merton as Loki, Dwight Frye as Anderson, John Dilson, Wheaton Chambers, George Pembroke, Guy D'Ennery

THE STORY: The immortal and insidious Doctor Fu Manchu requires artifacts which will lead him to the tomb of Genghis Khan to complete his conquest of Asia, and, subsequently, the world. His gruesome fanged Dacoit slaves help him eliminate anyone who refuses to accommodate his will. In San Angeles, California, he convenes a meeting of the Si-Fan, an international conspiracy which helps him draw up his plans. When archeologist Dr. James Parker is killed so that Fu Manchu can obtain rare scrolls in his possession, his son Allan joins forces with Sir Denis Nayland Smith of the British Foreign Office to avenge his father's death.

TRANSFER QUALITY: This long-lost serial was traded among collectors in terrible quality VHS tape versions for years and has been released on DVD previously only in an edition mastered from an inferior 16mm dupe print. We are pleased to announce that we have been offered the opportunity to release this serial from a transfer created from of the original Republic master print which is of extremely high quality and not washed out or missing detail in dark areas. The original film was created in the 1970s from the Republic Pictures 35mm original print or negative, we're not sure which. The picture quality is spectacular, however, though the image quality is slightly higher than that of an average DVD, the resolution achieved in the new digital transfer will not make a potential Blu-Ray release look substantially different enough from a DVD to call for one so the release will be on standard DVD only.

The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 12-13, 2012!
Greetings fans of The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, 1976-2011.  I'm writing with the best possible news about the future of old time radio fandom in the metro-New York/New Jersey area.  There will be a convention in Newark this fall - if enough of you are willing to participate.

Were you one of the people stalking the halls during that final Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, reveling in the big crowd, exuberant atmosphere and great community?  One of the ones who thought "it would be a shame if this went away forever," or "I hope I get a chance to spend time with these people again."

Well, your wishes have been granted.  Celebrating Audio Theater - Old & New, a brand-new convention, will take place October 12-13, 2012 at the same old Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, NJ that was home to Friends of Old Time Radio all those years.

It will feature live old time radio recreations as well as performances of modern audio drama, and a mix of panels and historical presentations familiar to FOTR attendees.

Please see our website above for a more complete description of what we're up to.  Also please see the "Buy Your Tickets" page and associated PayPal buttons and do so.  CATON is a brand new, volunteer, non-profit organization.  FOTR had a healthy cash cushion saved after 36 years.  CATON has a few contributions from the initial committee members and that's it. If we don't sell at least 200 dinner tickets by July 1, 2012, the event won't happen.  That's the minimum service for the banquet hall at the hotel.

Last year's huge, enthusiastic, FOTR crowd was inspirational.  We know many of you came because it was the "last" event.  We hope that enough of you realized once you came that this community - and the art form that inspired it - is worth saving and perpetuating.

Please join us.

Since this list is comprised of FOTR veterans, I'll predict some of the Q&A but of course, write back with any questions of your own.

Q.  Who's in charge here?
A.  Our overall chairperson is Steven M. Lewis of The Gotham Radio Players. Sean Dougherty (me) is handling marketing, Craig Wichman, a long-time FOTR actor, is handling guest relations.  Maggie Thompson has been acting as secretary and Jill Schissel has been handling the incorporation/legal issues.

Q. What about Jay Hickerson?
A.  Jay is comfortably retired in Florida and while he has given us great advice about how to get the event going, he is not actively involved in CATON.  Also, for anyone who hadn't heard, he suffered a bad fall just after the last FOTR convention.  He is fully healed and doing great.

Q.  Which special guests are you inviting?

A.  It's March so the guest list hasn't started to take shape.  We expect to draw on the New York-city area actors who have participated in FOTR in recent years.  Arthur Anderson of The Mercury Theater and Let's Pretend has agreed to be our honorary chairman for the first event but beyond him it's too early to tell.  Unless we get an overwhelming (and fast) reaction in terms of early ticket sales, it is unlikely we will be able to invite special guests from outside the area but FOTR itself went years before adding West Coast guests.  We are committed to a mix of professional casts as well as providing a forum for talented amateur groups, similar to FOTR.

Q.  So what are you going to do?
A.  We are soliciting proposals now via the website for presentations and performances at CATON.  If you are a historian, actor, director, author, or other person with something to add, please check the site, fill out the form and e-mail us and we'll let you know.  I'd expect to see many familiar faces on stage as well as some new ones as we incorporate the best of modern audio drama into the program.

Q.  What about the dealers?
A.  We're reaching out and seeing who would be interested in selling at this event.  Radio Spirits has already contacted us and expressed interest. Beyond that, well, buy your tickets.  If we can tell dealers that pre-sales are strong, we'll have more of them.

Q.  Why is the new convention only two days instead of four?
A.  The first FOTR convention was only a single day.  Committing to a minimum attendance for a banquet on Thursday night seemed a little too ambitious for a start-up event.

Q.  How many performances do you expect to have?
A.  We discussed that number at the last meeting and depending on how long we want to go in the evening it could be as many as ten in the two days. Keep watching the "2012 Program" page on the website.  Right now, it's empty but it will fill in as we evaluate proposals (as of last Thursday, we already had two to evaluate).

Q.  Will there be a new e-mail list for the new event to which I can also subscribe?

A.  Yes, probably but frankly there isn't one right now.  It's likely the next message to this list will be about that.  In the meantime, our website, twitter feed, the old Friends of Old Time Radio Convention Facebook page, and the new CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew Facebook page, are the best ways to get frequent updates.

Q.  How Can I help?
A.  Forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested.  I'm also putting together a canned "this is Celebrating Audio Theater Old & New" paragraph that bloggers can paste into their sites.  Write me for it, it should be ready by tonight or tomorrow.

Please find "CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew" on Facebook and like us. Please following the @CATOANCON twitter feed.  We know, CATON was taken, so we needed to add the "a."  It's not ideal.

There is a "donate" button on the left side of our website's home page.  If you are feeling especially helpful, please donate to us.  Of course, the best donation would be to buy your tickets now and trust us to deliver the show.  Ticket purchases will be refunded if the convention doesn't occur for any reason.  Donations will be returned only if we didn't need the money for something we couldn't cancel.  If you want us to be able to invite Chuck McCann or Shirley Mitchell from the West Coast, the donate button is really good way to help make that happen.

We also still need volunteers for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity at the event.  If you think you have some time between now and October to help us with marketing, logistics, web design, mailing list administration, event staffing or anything similar, please let us know and we WILL find something for you to do.

Please contact me with any questions.
See you - everyone together now - in Newark in October!

Expected shortly - Available for pre-order!

Gods of Opar: Tales of Lost Khokarsa collects for the first time anywhere Philip José Farmer’s epic Khokarsa cycle, including the never-before-published conclusion to the trilogy, The Song of Kwasin.

In Hadon of Ancient Opar, the young hero Hadon journeys from his outpost city to the heart of the ancient African empire of Khokarsa, battling in the Great Games for the chance to win the king’s crown. But just as Hadon stands upon the precipice of victory, the tyrannical King Minruth usurps the throne and overturns the beneficent, centuries-old rule of the priestesses of Kho. Now Hadon must set out upon a hero’s journey unlike any other—to hunt down a living god and return with his bounty.

The saga continues in Flight to Opar, as a decree by the oracle hurtles Hadon upon a perilous quest that will determine the fate of the next twelve millennia. In The Song of Kwasin, Hadon’s herculean cousin returns to Khokarsa after long years of exile in the Wild Lands. But soon Kwasin finds that in order to clear his name he will have to take up the cause against King Minruth himself and stop him before he fulfills his mad quest for immortality high atop the sun god’s bloody ziggurat.

While the editor of this series only recently came upon the above quote from 2008, these eyes read no truer words. Work has been underway for nearly a year on assembling the first two volumes of a series provisionally titled LOADED: THE COLLECTED FREDRIC BROWN. Now is your chance to get in on the ground floor of what is hoped to be the definitive collection of Fredric Brown sans his science fiction works. Assembled in chronological order of publication, this set will contain all the short fiction (of all genres: mystery, horror, noir, western, detection, etc.) and all of Brown’s novels (again, excepting his sf works). You’ll be able to enjoy Fredric Brown at his longer lengths from The Fabulous Clipjoint and Night of the Jabberwock to The Lenient Beast and Mrs. Murphy’s Underpants.

Assisting with this effort have been Brown bibliographer Phil Stephensen-Payne and Brown biographer Jack Seabrook. This massive undertaking could not have been accomplished without their help.

“Of all of Raymond Chandler’s followers, the most Chandlerish of them all might have been Howard Browne. His private eye hero, PAUL PINE, is simply one of the great eyes, no matter how inspired by (or derivative of ) Chandler’s Philip Marlowe he might have been. All the Pine books are well worth reading, and A Taste of Ashes (1957) in particular is just a flat-out, stone-cold private eye classic. Pine is a former investigator for the Illinois State attorney’s office in Chicago who works as a P.I. in Chicago. He’s got the obligatory cynicism, snappy similes and metaphors down pat, though he tends to be a bit more down to earth than Marlowe, and often mocks his own tendencies to moroseness and world-weariness. And let’s face it — Browne was a stronger plotter than Chandler.

In 1985, almost thirty years after Pine’s last appearance, Dennis McMillan published a book The Paper Gun. That volume collected the only previously-published Pine story, “So Dark For April,” plus an incomplete Pine novel that Browne, in the forword, called “a story complete in itself. But it is not the whole novel.” He states that he had lost interest in the private eye genre, and so the story is only 122 pages in length, too long for a short story, but too short for a novel.’ —adapted from “Paul Pine” by Kevin Burton Smith, www.thrillingdetective.com

HALO FOR HIRE contains all the Paul Pine stories.

69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block

Cover art by Robert McGinnis

69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman.

It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite.

From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it.

STRANGE EMBRACE:
They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might.

It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life!

Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation.

JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!

Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave...

THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH by Ariel S. Winter
Cover art by Chuck Pyle

A breathtaking first novel written in the form of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.

1931
The body found in the gutter in France led the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her hot-tempered American husband.

1941
A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of a Hollywood starlet.

1951
A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...

Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber.

Black Gate / Seti Says

Hundreds of years before the hero Hadon sailed forth from his shining city of gold and jewels upon his legendary adventures, the heroine-priestess Lupoeth set out upon the decree of the oracle to discover a new land upon the untamed shores of ancient Africa’s southern sea. But Lupoeth finds herself little prepared for the trials ahead, as well as those that follow upon her heels—for the jealous queen who wants her rival banished has appointed a worshiper of the sun god with a criminal past as the expedition’s priest, hoping to undermine the mission and seal its doom.

Now, lost in the deep jungle, Lupoeth must fight to keep her ill-equipped band of followers alive in the face of deadly beasts, savage Neanderthals, and conspiring enemies. Soon she finds the most accursed deity of her people’s faith, exiled from the empire by the Great Goddess Kho Herself, may be her only ally in this wild land. But Sahhindar, the god of Time and bronze, has a mysterious agenda of his own—one that Lupoeth fears might spell doom not only for her expedition, but for the entire world…

Queen of the Gangsters: Volume 1: Broadwalk Empire
Stories by Margie Harris
Introduction by David Bischoff

Margie Harris was the first woman hardboiled crime fiction writer in history. She wrote some of the toughest, roughest, most remorseless stories to be found in ’30s gangster pulps like Gangland Stories, Racketeer Stories and Mobs. Her avid readers questioned whether she could even be a woman. Who is this “Margie Harris”? they wondered aloud. Who is this frail who cracks wise from the inside?

I’m “just another twist,” she told them—a woman of mystery then—a woman of mystery now. She palled around with the death-row doomed and the Chicago underworld. She may have been a newswoman; may have worked in the law. One point was not in doubt. She slammed her typewriter like a machine gun, mowing down good guys and bad guys alike; shooting them, knifing them, blowing them up—lacing her prose with metaphysical commentary on the destinations of their damned souls.

Tough. Rough. Hardboiled. Through the explosive stories of Margie Harris we savor the meeting of fist and flesh, the clatter of machine guns, the stench of gas fumes from sleek Packards barreling down city streets, the bitterness of bootleg hooch, the glory of sin. A violent symphony of hot jazz.

In an age when gangsters were royalty, Margie Harris was their queen.

This inaugural anthology of her work collects eight explosive stories, an introduction by David Bischoff, and a bio of Margie Harris.

David Bischoff is a New York Times bestselling  author, editor and script writer whose credits include the classic fantasy series, The Gaming Magi, and work on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He teaches in an MFA program at Seton Hill University.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 2012!
Only seven weeks to go until Robert E. Howard Days 2012 in beautiful Cross Plains, Texas. There’s still plenty of time to send in your pre-registration and make plans to attend to best two days in Howard fandom. If you check the REH DAYS 2012 page (tab at the top), you’ll find a few revisions for your attendance pleasure. Here’s a partial list.

1. The Friday night Celebration Banquet has been moved to the Baptist Church Family Life Center, which is one block north of the Library. There’s three times as much space there, so Project Pride won’t be limited to a certain amount of seats. (But please pre-register so they know how many are coming!) Dinner is chicken-fried steak with all the fixin’s!

2. The Howard House and Museum will be open on Thursday June 7th from 2-4 pm. No docents will be on duty, but you may take a tour and stop in the Gift Shop! This will get you early access to the new REH Museum t-shirt, among other great REH gifts!

3. There WILL be a panel at 9:00 pm on Friday night after the Banquet/Silent Auction/REH Foundation Awards at the church. FISTS AT THE ICE HOUSE will be presented by REH boxing experts Mark Finn and Chris Gruber with assistance from Jeff Shanks. This will take place AT the old Ice House on Main Street (well, on the empty concrete slab behind it). Bring your flashlights. We’re trying something new this year – and yes, we have permission…

4. There will again be some extemporaneous REH (only) poetry reading under the street light in the back yard of the House on Friday night. We’re calling it REH Streetlamp Poetry.

5. PLEASE donate REH items to the Silent Auction. You can send them to: Project Pride, POB 534, Cross Plains, TX 76443, or bring them to the Howard House by 3 pm Friday afternoon during Howard Days.

Hope to see both familiar and new faces under the wonderful Texas sky in a few more weeks. It’s like a big family reunion of Howard fans, so y’all come.

Any questions: e-mail “Indy” Bill Cavalier at 2cavaliers@sbcglobal.net.
