Airship 27 Productions - Now available!
DR.WATSON’S AMERICAN ADVENTURE

Airship 27 Productions announces the release of their latest title and the second in their series of adventures starring Dr.Watson, the brave, stout hearted ally and companion to the World’s Greatest Detective.

When Sherlock Holmes, who was presumed dead at the hands of his arch nemesis, Professor Moriarty, returned in the story Dr.Watson chronicles as “The Adventure of the Empty House,” we were told how the Great Detective had spent the intervening years abroad in disguise as a secret agent for England.  For the devoted Holmes fan, that seemed sufficient to close this chapter of the duo’s life and move on to new adventure.
But when a heavy locker box arrives at 221 B Baker St. from the United States addressed to Dr. Watson, it is Holmes who finds his curiosity piqued.

What is in the mysterious box?  Who sent it and why?  Holmes summons his loyal companion who in turn sets about telling Holmes of his own unique adventure abroad during his hiatus.  What follows is an amazing mystery involving Watson’s lovely wife, Mary, and her family history.  The answer to the puzzle rests in the foothills of the Adirondacks of upper New York State and the couple soon set sail for America, Mary hoping the trip will pull her husband’s mood from the gloom in which it was mired since the supposed death of Holmes.  Once in New York, they encounter the vibrant, colorful civil servant, Teddy Roosevelt, who provides the vital clue that triggers the Watsons' quest?

From the majestic peaks of the Adirondacks to open plains of the wild west, Erwin K. Roberts spins a fantastic, rip-roaring yarn that will have Holmes and Watson fans cheering from the first page to the last.  Featuring interior illustrations by artist Pedro Cruz and a colorful cover by Rob Davis & Shane Evans, “Dr.Watson’s American Adventure” is a rollicking grand adventure in the classic pulp style.

This volume also features a special PULP Bonus; “Hyde and Seek” – brand new adventure starring her Majesty’s Secret Agent, Hound Dog Harker by Aaron Smith.

Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde
Now live on Kickstarter - Make a pledge today!
Last chance to pledge!
The last time to pledge is April 29, 3AM EST!

We're at 183%!  Thank you!
Previously, I've announced that three Doc Wilde novels would be released this year, to be followed by two more next year. Then I added the Dark Avenger Option that allows supporters to add the fourth book, Doc Wilde and The Daughter of Darkness to their rewards package at a special rate.

Now, several of you have asked me what I have planned for the fifth book, and if there's any way you can add it as well, to round out the pentalogy as it were.

So, with eight days left and me still hoping to get as close to my ideal goal of 200% as possible...why not?

In the fifth book, Doc Wilde and The Chariots of the Frogs, the Frogs of Doom return to our world on a much more epic scale, ready to turn back the tide of warm-blooded evolution once and for all with armies of batrachian monstrosities, dark amphibious magics, and the eldritch power of their dark god. Also really wanting to eat the Wildes, who got in their way last time.

And, yes, you can add the book to your package if you like by adding this new option:

(NEW) THE MONSTRO FROG OPTION
You can now get the fifth Doc Wilde novel, Doc Wilde and The Chariots of the Frogs, as part of your Kickstarter package, at a special rate. Add $5 to your pledge and you get the ebook; add $13 and you get the ebook and the trade paperback; add $20 and you get both plus a bookplate signed by both Gary and me. (For international orders, an additional $10 will be needed to cover shipping on the paperback).

As special thanks for their high level of support, supporters at SERIAL DAREDEVIL level and higher who add the trade paperback for $20 will have it upgraded to a numbered limited edition to match those already in their rewards package.
The “Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde” project is now live on Kickstarter, and people are invited to join us on the adventure.

“In a young adult book market crowded with the depressing and the dour, Tim Byrd’s Doc Wilde swings in on a jungle vine to raise the flag high for adventure. Infused with pace, fun, and all the two-fisted action a reader could ask for, Wilde lovingly riffs on situations straight out of the old pulps, even while making them fresh for a new generation.”       — Zack Stentz, screenwriter, Thor, X-Men: First Class

I'm Tim Byrd. The Doc Wilde stories are my tribute to the pulp stories I loved growing up, and still love today. Like The Incredibles or the Indiana Jones films, they are suitable for kids and adults both,  full of action and humor and weird science and occult menace and lots of derring-do.

The Kickstarter project encompasses three Doc Wilde novels, all to be released by year’s end. The books will be available in trade paperback and ebook formats, and will have gorgeous covers and interior illustrations by the great Aussie comic book artist Gary Chaloner.

Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom (previously published by Putnam) will reappear in an improved new edition in June, featuring not only the new artwork inside and out by Gary, but my “author’s cut” preferred edit and a new short Doc Wilde adventure.

In August, we’ll release Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull, the long-awaited second book, in which the Wildes face a mind-blowing mystery and a truly bizarre villain.

In November the third adventure will appear, Doc Wilde and The Dance of the Werewolf, a dark tale featuring lycanthropes and witchcraft. At least two more Doc Wilde adventures will follow in 2013.

(If you follow the links above you can read excerpts from each of the books).

For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a patronage system in which creators present something they’d like to do and supporters can pledge funds to help them do it, in return for rewards varying from thank you's to copies of the items created to interactions of various sorts with the creator. The creator posts his intentions and a target amount of money he is trying to raise; if, within the time the Kickstarter runs, enough money is pledged to hit that target, then the Kickstarter succeeds. If the target amount is not met, the Kickstarter has failed and no money is exchanged.

The target for this project is $3,000, covering all three books. That’s a minimum goal, not a maximum; once it’s reached, the Kickstarter continues and people can still get involved. The funds will go toward art, book design, and editing, as well as paying for the writing. Any extra funds will be applied to producing more books.

I’ve come up with reward levels for pledges ranging from $5 for an ebook copy of one of the novels and the supporter’s name on the book’s acknowledgments page, up to $400 for signed limited editions of the books along with a bunch more cool stuff. There are only three slots available at the highest level, and four at the second highest, because they include exclusive one-of-a-kind rewards, so those are first come, first served.

If you’re looking for adventure…it’s time to GO WILDE!

“It’s a true delight…Tim Byrd has taken Doc Savage, added in a pinch of Robert E. Howard, a liberal dose of H.P. Lovecraft, and mixed it all together in a well done, enchanting pastiche of the pulps that will appeal to the adult audience as well as the young adult readers. It is an over the top at times, rip-roaring adventure that returns us to the days of yesteryear and leaves us wanting more.”               —The Baryon Review

DRUMS OF FU MANCHU
In the final stages of proofing - Coming in May!
Transferred from a film master made from the original Republic Pictures Archive print.

REPUBLIC 1940 / 15 Chapters
Directed by: William Witney, John English
Starring: Henry Brandon as Dr. Fu Manchu
William Royle as Sir Nayland Smith
Robert Kellard as Allan Parker

Supporting Cast: Gloria Franklin as Fah Lo Suee, Olaf Hytten as Dr. Petrie, Tom Chatterton as Professor Randolph, Luana Walters as Mary Randolph, Lal Chend Mehra as Sirdar Prahin, George Cleveland as Professor Parker, John Merton as Loki, Dwight Frye as Anderson, John Dilson, Wheaton Chambers, George Pembroke, Guy D'Ennery

THE STORY: The immortal and insidious Doctor Fu Manchu requires artifacts which will lead him to the tomb of Genghis Khan to complete his conquest of Asia, and, subsequently, the world. His gruesome fanged Dacoit slaves help him eliminate anyone who refuses to accommodate his will. In San Angeles, California, he convenes a meeting of the Si-Fan, an international conspiracy which helps him draw up his plans. When archeologist Dr. James Parker is killed so that Fu Manchu can obtain rare scrolls in his possession, his son Allan joins forces with Sir Denis Nayland Smith of the British Foreign Office to avenge his father's death.

TRANSFER QUALITY: This long-lost serial was traded among collectors in terrible quality VHS tape versions for years and has been released on DVD previously only in an edition mastered from an inferior 16mm dupe print. We are pleased to announce that we have been offered the opportunity to release this serial from a transfer created from of the original Republic master print which is of extremely high quality and not washed out or missing detail in dark areas. The original film was created in the 1970s from the Republic Pictures 35mm original print or negative, we're not sure which. The picture quality is spectacular, however, though the image quality is slightly higher than that of an average DVD, the resolution achieved in the new digital transfer will not make a potential Blu-Ray release look substantially different enough from a DVD to call for one so the release will be on standard DVD only.

Robert E. Howard - Paradox Entertainment and Davis Films sign Solomon Kane film / TV license!
Davis Films and Solomon Kane Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary to Paradox Entertainment Inc., have signed a license agreement for film and TV rights to cutlass-wielding Puritan Solomon Kane, created by Robert E. Howard.

The minimum guarantee for the five-year term generates a positive cash flow in the second quarter of at least 3 MSEK. Paradox retains all license and merchandise rights.

Davis Films, headed by producer Samuel Hadida, previously held the film and TV rights together with Wandering Star. Together they released the first Solomon Kane film in 2009 featuring, among others, James Purefoy, Max von Sydow, and Rachel Hurd-Wood.

“We’re very happy to expand our relationship with Davis Films and Samuel Hadida as they have great experience in building successful, international franchises,“ said Fredrik Malmberg, President of Paradox Entertainment.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 2012!
Only seven weeks to go until Robert E. Howard Days 2012 in beautiful Cross Plains, Texas. There’s still plenty of time to send in your pre-registration and make plans to attend to best two days in Howard fandom. If you check the REH DAYS 2012 page (tab at the top), you’ll find a few revisions for your attendance pleasure. Here’s a partial list.

1. The Friday night Celebration Banquet has been moved to the Baptist Church Family Life Center, which is one block north of the Library. There’s three times as much space there, so Project Pride won’t be limited to a certain amount of seats. (But please pre-register so they know how many are coming!) Dinner is chicken-fried steak with all the fixin’s!

2. The Howard House and Museum will be open on Thursday June 7th from 2-4 pm. No docents will be on duty, but you may take a tour and stop in the Gift Shop! This will get you early access to the new REH Museum t-shirt, among other great REH gifts!

3. There WILL be a panel at 9:00 pm on Friday night after the Banquet/Silent Auction/REH Foundation Awards at the church. FISTS AT THE ICE HOUSE will be presented by REH boxing experts Mark Finn and Chris Gruber with assistance from Jeff Shanks. This will take place AT the old Ice House on Main Street (well, on the empty concrete slab behind it). Bring your flashlights. We’re trying something new this year – and yes, we have permission…

4. There will again be some extemporaneous REH (only) poetry reading under the street light in the back yard of the House on Friday night. We’re calling it REH Streetlamp Poetry.

CELEBRATING EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AND
THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES AND JOHN CARTER‼

Convention Update
Well, the convention is now just over a week away, so we figured it was time for one more update.  Both our hotel nights and pre-registrations are up from the last few years (and we set a record for attendance last year), and we sold out of our 143 tables a few months ago.  So we're hoping for our biggest show yet!

The images for the Friday night (April 27) auction from the estate of Jerry Weist are now available on our Facebook page.
A tinyurl link to that is:  http://tinyurl.com/d8pl8pm

A pdf of the auction catalog itself is on our website, available for downloading and completely searchable.  We've highlighted many authors and artists in the various 200 lots, which run to around 1800 pulps.

If you're arriving on Thursday (April 26), make sure to stop by the con suite (which should be room 1611).  Beginning around 7:00 pm, you'll be able to pick up your registration materials, including your passes to our special showing of JOHN CARTER at the AMC Theater next to the hotel.  As always, we won't be set up to take new registrations Thursday (we'll start taking those on-site Friday morning), so if you'd like to attend the screening, please remember to pre-register.

A couple of other highlights we thought we'd mention:

-- Saturday (April 28) at 12:30 we'll be showing TARZAN: LORD OF THE LOUISIANA JUNGLE, a new documentary on the shooting of the 1918 silent TARZAN OF THE APES (which will follow the documentary).  Producer Al Bohl will be attending the convention.  We have a full slate of ERB film programming running Friday and Saturday -- make sure to check the website for details!

-- Our Friday evening panel, before the estate auction, will be THE ERB ILLUSTRATORS by Gary Gianni & Randy Broecker.  A lively overview of well-known and obscure artists who have visualized the stories of the prolific author.  A visual presentation will accompany the discussion.  Gary Gianni has illustrated the stories of  Ray Bradbury , R.E. Howard, Michael Chabon and George R.R. Martin. He drew Prince Valiant for 8 years and a variety of comics ranging from Batman to The Shadow.  Randy Broecker is author of "Fantasy of the 20th Century" and is noted for over three decades of work in the field of fantasy and horror illustration.

-- Our Saturday evening panel, before the Saturday night auction, will be EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS: A LOOK AT THE FIRST 100 YEARS AND BEYOND - A look at the great fictional worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs from the Tarzan novels to the Underground world of Pellucidar to Beyond the Farthest Star. We'll look at the 100 year legacy of adventure and see what's new in the future.  Panelists:  Joan V. Bledig: Member of the Chicago chapter of the local Burrough Bibliophiles: The Muckers will moderate the discussion; Mike "The Tarzan Guy" Conran, collector of everything ERB; Douglas Klauba, Moonstone cover artist and John Carter of Mars fan; Bob Garcia, co-editor of the forthcoming WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS anthology; & Michael Hudson, Publisher with Sequential Pulp Comics, a specialty imprint producing six Authorized ERB and one Kline property under a co-publishing arrangement with Dark Horse Comics.

-- In addition to our Friday night auction, as usual, we'll have one on Saturday night which will draw from a variety of sources.
Among the items we already have lined up for that are the following:

-- BLACK MASK September 1929 - with the first installment of THE MALTESE FALCON!
     -- BLACK MASK - a 1925 issue featuring Hammett
-- FAR EAST ADVENTURE STORIES - the first issue!
-- FLASH GORDON'S STRANGE ADVENTURE MAGAZINE - the only issue of this rare pulp
-- TARZAN'S HIDDEN JUNGLE - a copy of the 1954 film script by pulp great FRANK GRUBER!

And our program book, which is nearly 150 pages devoted to ERB, will feature four newly discovered, never before reprinted articles by ERB!

We'll hope to see you at this year's Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention!

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only (but see the HOTEL section for details on how to get a $10 refund on your membership!).  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Ages 13 & under are free.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com).

DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 130 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the eighth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine.  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set.

AUCTIONS:  We will have 2 auctions, Friday and Saturday nights.

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby!

HOTEL:  For our twelfth show, for the fifth year in a row we’re at the Westin Lombard, in the Western suburbs of Chicago.  The Westin is located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $109/night, same as the last 2 years (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. Central time on April 5, 2012!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  Movie theaters are also a short walk away.  And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away.  If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel.  Please mention the con when booking rooms.  Also, since it greatly benefits the convention to have folks stay at the Westin during the show, if you attend the con and stay at the Westin, we will refund you $10 of your membership at the show (limit 2 refunds per hotel room).

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
The Frank M. Robinson Auction continues!

1) You must be registered to bid.  Please either register, or update your registration by going to the website: www.adventurehouse.com and click on the Auction Logo.  Then click on the link for the first Auction and click on the link 'Click Here to Register to Bid.'  This will allow you to either register for the first time, or update your file, and get your bidder number and password....

2) PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU PLAN ON BIDDING! Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction.  For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes.  Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount.  Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. A scenario could be as follows:

Next Bid Required states - $100, the reserve is $300 and you place a bid for $500, then the accepted bid will be $500, not $300.

If the reserve has been met, then a second field will be visible under the 'Your Maximum', and this allows you to place a MAX BID allowing our system to bid for you.  A suggested scenario:

Next Bid Required states - $100, place an initial bid of $100, and continue to place subsequent bids based on the Next Bid Required until you reach the reserve price, or at least as high as you'd like to bid.  If you do reach the reserve, then you may place a MAX BID in the 'Your Maximum' bid field, and our system will bid for you.

Please DO NOT place a MAX BID under the YOUR BID field.  It will accept that as your bid price.  If you have made this mistake, please contact us and I'll fix it for you.

3) Searching for an author, or title?  Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in?  Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers.  a) You may use the search function built into the auction site.  Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.'  You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses.  When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid.  b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.'  This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order.

4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM.

5) All prices at final gavel price, DOES NOT include the BUYERS PREMIUM.  The Buyers Premium and credit card fee [if the invoice is paid by credit card or Paypal] will be added on at the end of the auction.  The initial invoice will not include the cost of shipping, we will add that once we receive your decision on preferred shipping method.

6) All auctions, #9 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times:

Frank M. Robinson Auction #9
May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #10
ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #11
May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #12
May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams!

Semi-Dual by J.U. Giesy & Junius B. Smith

Altus Press has announced a collection of The Semi-Dual stories J.U. Giesy & Junius B. Smith.  The Semi-Dual stories were an an occult detective series. The first series appeared in THE CAVALIER in 1912, which is what Altus Press will be reprinting in the first volume.

Prince Abduel Omar of Persia, the astrologist popularly known as “Semi-Dual,” came to the public’s notice, and begins a career which lasted for decades. Semi-Dual becomes one of the greatest occult detectives of the years before WW2, using his telepathy, insight into humans, and infallible astrological predications to protect a number of innocent men and women (usually women) from a variety of evil men. Semi-Dual works from his office on the 20th floor of the Urania Building in New York City. Semi-Dual’s enemies range from the very humble–gangsters and treacherous French Foreign Legion officers–to the mightily wicked–the Black Brotherhood, a cult of devil-worshipers devoted to the cause of “Erlik, Commander of the Hosts of All Evil.”

Doc and Patricia Savage attempt to thwart the deadly plots of a red-hooded mastermind in "He Could Stop the World," a pulp classic by Laurence Donovan that inspired an early Superman story by Jerry Siegel. Then, "The Laugh of Death" could change the outcome of World War II, in a Lester Dent thriller that introduced Doc's new Fortress of Solitude that inspired the Man of Steel's glacier hideaway. This double-novel collector's edition leads off with a knockout cover by legendary paperback artist James Bama. and also reprints both classic color pulp covers by Robert G. Harris and Emery Clarke, Paul Orban's classic interior illustrations and historical commentary by Will Murray. (Sanctum Books) 978-1-60877-087-8 Softcover, 7x10. 128 pages, B&W, $14.95

Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde
Now live on Kickstarter - Make a pledge today!
The last day to pledge is April 28!

We're at 143%!

Thomas Sigismund Stribling (1881-1965) penned many short works for the periodicals of his day—adventure, satirical, boys adventure, detective and science fiction—which appeared in Everybody's, The Century Magazine, Holland's Magazine, Youth's Companion, American Boy and Adventure. For the later, he is well remembered as the author of a series of detective stories featuring psychologist sleuth Doctor Poggioli.

Ripped from the pages of Adventure are two unreprinted short novels of science fiction, "Web of the Sun" and "The Green Splotches."

But the short story form could not corral the ambitious T.S. Stribling who would win the 1933 Pulizer Prize for the Novel for his work, "The Store."

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #8:
The Spider "Wings of the Black Death"

A scourge not seen since the Middle Ages descends on America's largest city, wielded by a criminal mastermind who threatens to wipe out New York ... and reveal The Spider's true identity in the process!

"Wings of the Black Death", Norvell W. Page's inaugural novel as author of The Spider, is now available in a deluxe audiobook from RadioArchives.com!

Following on the success of RadioArchives.com first Spider audiobook, "Prince of the Red Looters", this new audio adventure pits Richard Wentworth, alias The Spider, against the first of a long line of evil malefactors devised by Page that would inhabit the webbed crusader's life for the next ten years
.

The Spider Battles a Vicious Foe
In "Wings of the Black Death", Manhattan is under siege from a new brand of terrorist – a human monster who calls himself the Black Death. Unless the city fathers pay a monumental ransom, New York will become a city of unspeakable destruction.

As Will Murray says in his introduction, "With his first white-heat story, Norvell W. Page remade Richard Wentworth into a messianic avenger unlike anything pulp readers ever read before. Driven, deadly, The Spider was a daredevil caught between the law that branded him as a criminal and the underworld he terrorized with his metallic laugh and searing lead."

Dynamic Narration and Production
Produced by Roger Rittner, with full period music score and extensive sound effects, "Wings of the Black Death", like its predecessor, is narrated by Nick Santa Maria, with Robin Riker as Nita Van Sloan.

"Listeners who enjoyed 'Prince of the Red Looters' will delight in Nick's dynamic narration," Roger says, "as well as an extended and enhanced role for Robin as Nita battles the malevolent Black Death on her own. Will Wentworth come to the rescue? (Do you have to ask?)"

For just a taste of the excitement, CLICK HERE to listen to a preview.

"Wings of the Black Death" is available now at just $19.98 in a deluxe six Audio CD set.

Sequential Pulp Comics
ATHENA VOLTAIRE FLIES TO
SEQUENTIAL PULP ON A DARK HORSE
Globetrotting aviatrix Athena Voltaire battles Nazis, occult science, and mythical creatures against the backdrop of the pulp era. And now she’s coming in for a landing with Sequential Pulp Comics.

Co-publishers Sequential Pulp Comics and Dark Horse Comics are pleased to announce their publishing plans for writer/artist Steve Bryant’s 1930s heroine.

“Steve and I share a common love for all things pulp and for telling great stories. His character, Athena Voltaire, could not be a better fit for our line of graphic novels,” said Sequential Pulp president Michael Hudson. “These stories will have a beginning, a middle, and a true end to them, giving the reader a complete and fulfilling experience. The art and the writing are masterful. I can’t wait to see how Steve and his team develop this wonderful property as we move ahead.”

"I can't think of a better home for Athena Voltaire than the Sequential Pulp imprint. Their commitment to adapting genre classics and creating new pulp icons is second to none," said Bryant. "To be published through Dark Horse is the cherry on top. Hellboy, B.P.R.D., Buffy, Battlepug—they put out some of the best comics on the stands today. I’m flattered and humbled to see my book added to such a prestigious line!"

Athena Voltaire launched as a part of the Modern Tales family of webcomics in 2002 and was nominated for a Best Digital Comic Eisner Award in 2005. The feature was also included in St. Martin's The Year's Best Graphic Novels, Comics and Manga (2004 edition).

In addition to covering representational rights, the exclusive print and digital publishing agreement calls for an Omnibus edition containing remastered versions of the previously published Athena Voltaire material followed by new adventures, including two graphic novels and an illustrated prose anthology.

With titles scheduled into 2015 and beyond, Athena Voltaire is sure to continue to please her existing fan base as well as those who will be coming aboard through this relaunch. Anyone who enjoys pulp, classic adventure stories, classic and modern comics will fall in love with this heroine who is unlike any other in comics today.

CELEBRATING EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AND
THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES AND JOHN CARTER‼

We're pleased to announce that in connection with our theme this year
-- celebrating 100 years of John Carter and Tarzan --
JOHN CARTER will be coming to the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention this year!

We've booked a screen at the AMC Yorktown 17 theater, to show JOHN CARTER exclusively for con goers the evening of Thursday, April 26, at around 10:00 pm. We're still working out some of the logistics with the theater, but we should be giving out free passes to con goers in the con suite that evening, beginning around 7:00 pm, along with the pre-registration packets. To get a pass, you'll need to be pre-registered (since like always, we won't be set up to take new registrations that evening). Passes will be given out on a first come, first served basis, but we've booked a large enough theater that, barring an incredible increase in our usual attendance on Thursday evening, there should be plenty of passes for everyone who wants to attend. It should be great to see the film with an audience full of pulp fans and we'll hope to see you there!  It's a great film -- Deb & Doug are about to go see it for the fourth time this weekend.

Also, one last reminder -- in order to get the convention rate (which is highly discounted from the regular rate) for hotel rooms at our con hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, you need to book your rooms by 5:00 pm central time on April 5, 2010.

Our hotel has extended the time in which you can register for a room at the convention rate --
reservations must now be made with the hotel by 5:00 pm central on April 12, 2012 in order to get the hotel rate.

Photos for the Friday night auction at the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention
(starting at around 8:00 pm April 27, 2012) will be added soon to our website and facebook page,
but for now, here's a link to the catalog of all 200 lots (around 1800 pulps).

6) All auctions, #7 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.  Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times:

Frank M. Robinson Auction #7
April 13, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #8
April 14, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #9
May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #10
ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #11
May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #12

Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde
Now live on Kickstarter - Make a pledge today!
The last day to pledge is April 28!

We're at 123%!  Thank you!
I really appreciate your continued support in getting the word out. Just because we passed our goal doesn't mean we're done. In truth, my hope all along has been that we hit at least 200%, which will be $6,000. That's still only two thousand per book, and will give us a bit more of a comfortable margin in getting plenty of art for each book and setting us up for starting on next year's books.

To celebrate our success, I'm adding an option that all supporters, regardless of pledge level, can take advantage of.
THE DARK AVENGER OPTION
You can now get the fourth Doc Wilde novel as part of your Kickstarter package, at a special rate.
Add $5 to your pledge and you get the ebook; add $13 and you get the ebook and the trade paperback; add $20 and you get both plus a bookplate signed by both Gary and me.

The book will be released in the first half of 2013.
And what is the fourth book? You're hearing it here first... Doc Wilde and The Daughter of Darkness

As a further incentive to keep helping us by blogging, tweeting, talking us up on Facebook, etc., I'm adding a stretch goal for when we reach $6,000 that will benefit all supporters who've pledged at least 5$.

If we raise $6,000, I will write a fifth short adventure and everyone who has pledged $5 or more will get an ebook copy for no extra charge. Supporters at PULP HERO and above will receive a signed trade paperback copy as well. In the event anyone else wants a trade paperback copy, you'll be able to get it for $10 (plus international shipping if needed); supporters at SERIAL CLIFFHANGER and above will have their copies signed to match their existing set.

This is issue #3 in the Old Sleuth dime novel series, first published in the Fireside Companion for 26 weeks from February 16, to August 13, 1883.

A bloody handkerchief on the banks of the Bronx river is found.  This leads to other clues: signs of a struggle, bloody fingerprints on a tree, hair ripped from the scalp a head, a crushed diamond ring.  Also a woman is missing.  But whether she is involved or not in these mysterious discoveries is undetermined, but it all looks very suspicious.  Old Sleuth is called out of retirement when everyone else has failed to find a clue.  What seems like an almost impossible task, considering the time that has elapsed before Old Sleuth takes up the case is quickly dismissed as the famous detective doggedly uncovers one clue after another before unraveling the once unfathomable mystery.

James Bond - William Boyd to write new James Bond novel!
Ian Fleming Publications has announced that William Boyd will write the next James Bond novel. Boyd's yet untitled novel will take Bond back to the 1960s and will be published in Fall 2013 by Jonathan Cape in the UK and HarperCollins in the U.S and Canada.

Here is the full press release:

William Boyd, the award-winning and bestselling author of Restless and Any Human Heart, is to write the next James Bond novel.

The novel, which is yet to be titled, will be published in the UK and Commonwealth in autumn 2013 by Jonathan Cape – Ian Fleming’s original publisher and an imprint of Vintage Publishing – and simultaneously by HarperCollins Publishers in USA & Canada. Rights were sold in the English language by Jonny Geller of Curtis Brown, on behalf of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.

William Boyd is the third author in recent years to be invited by the Ian Fleming estate to write an official Bond novel, following in the footsteps of the American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, who wrote Carte Blanche in 2011, and Sebastian Faulks, whose Devil May Care was published to mark Ian Fleming’s centenary in 2008.

Boyd is a writer of international acclaim whose 11 novels and short-story collections have been translated into over 30 languages with many of them adapted for film and television. While the details and title of the next 007 adventure naturally remain secret, the author has revealed that next year’s publication will mark a return to 'classic Bond' and will be set in the late 1960s.

Boyd comments: "When the Ian Fleming estate invited me to write the new James Bond novel I accepted at once. For me the prospect appeared incredibly exciting and stimulating – a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. In fact my father introduced me to the James Bond novels in the 1960s and I read them all then – From Russia with Love being my favourite."

Corinne Turner, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd, comments: "William Boyd is a contemporary English writer whose classic novels combine literary elements with a broad appeal. His thrillers occupy the niche that Ian Fleming would fill were he writing today and with similar style and flair. This alongside his fascination with Fleming himself makes him the perfect choice to take Bond back to his 1960s world."

As well as the publication of the new novel, 2013 is a significant year for Bond, marking 60 years since Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale, was published by Cape in 1953. Cape was also the publisher of the first ever official Bond novel following Fleming's death in 1964, when Kingsley Amis took up the mantle writing Colonel Sun as Robert Markham in 1968.

Dan Franklin, Publisher, Jonathan Cape comments: "It is fantastic that Bond is returning to Cape, his birthplace, and even more so that he will do so in the hands of William Boyd. I can’t think of anyone better qualified."

Hundreds of years before the hero Hadon sailed forth from his shining city of gold and jewels upon his legendary adventures, the heroine-priestess Lupoeth set out upon the decree of the oracle to discover a new land upon the untamed shores of ancient Africa’s southern sea. But Lupoeth finds herself little prepared for the trials ahead, as well as those that follow upon her heels—for the jealous queen who wants her rival banished has appointed a worshiper of the sun god with a criminal past as the expedition’s priest, hoping to undermine the mission and seal its doom.

Now, lost in the deep jungle, Lupoeth must fight to keep her ill-equipped band of followers alive in the face of deadly beasts, savage Neanderthals, and conspiring enemies. Soon she finds the most accursed deity of her people’s faith, exiled from the empire by the Great Goddess Kho Herself, may be her only ally in this wild land. But Sahhindar, the god of Time and bronze, has a mysterious agenda of his own—one that Lupoeth fears might spell doom not only for her expedition, but for the entire world…

Adventures in Science Fantasy

Now accepting pre-orders!
The book is expected to ship by the end of April or early May!

The REH Foundation Press is proud to present ADVENTURES IN SCIENCE FANTASY, a collection of Robert E. Howard’s sort of science fiction stories. Michael A. Stackpole, author of Conan the Barbarian (the novelization of the recent film) and many other books, writes in his introduction:

Howard’s stories do not adhere to one definition of science fiction, which holds that science must be part of the solution of any problem. In fact, in most of these stories, the application of science is the genesis of the problem, and man’s heroic spirit is the solution.

This volume checks in at 298 pages, and will be printed in hardback with dust jacket, in a limited quantity of 200 copies, each individually numbered. Cover art by Mark Schultz; introduction by Michael A. Stackpole; and edited by Rob Roehm. The book is expected to ship by the end of April or early May.

Rough Edges

Sequential Pulp Comics
The FIRST Action-Adventure Hero Returns in a new series of Quatermain Adventures from Sequential Pulp Comics!

Allan Quatermain may not be as well known as Tarzan or Indiana Jones, but he adventured his way through lost civilizations long before those two characters’ adventures had been put into writing.

Quatermain first appeared in Sir H. Rider Haggard's 1886 novel, King Solomon's Mines, and he set the standard for generations of adventure heroes. Haggard's second most famous character, the iconic Ayesha followed a year later in the rousing "lost civilization" yarn, She. Both Quatermain and Ayesha proved to be so popular that Haggard wrote one of the earliest versions of a "crossover" with Allan and She. Both characters have proven to be remarkably durable over the decades in both print and film and continue to thrill audiences today.

With a resurgence in pulps and classic adventure at an all time high, Sequential Pulp’s Michael Hudson felt a graphic novel series built around the adventures of Allan Quatermain was due and thus was born the first two books A Quatermain Adventure: King Solomon’s Mines and A Quatermain Adventure: She.  Michael Hudson says, "Our version of King Solomon's Mines is the first in a series of wild  adventures that take Quatermain and his companions all over the world...and even beneath it. The second graphic novel in the series is an adaptation of She, which blends elements from both the original novel and She and Allan.  I’m thrilled to have two creators well versed in adventure comic storytelling in  Mark Ellis and Pablo Marcos on King Solomon’s Mines. The work that has been coming in is stunning!”

When offered scripting reins on the project, veteran action-adventure novelist Mark (James Axler) Ellis saw it as an opportunity to "re-imagine" Quatermain and his milieu.  Ellis says,  "Quatermain is not just the template for all modern adventure heroes, but for the 'Englishman who went native' character archetype.  I thought it would be interesting to examine that a bit in our series.  So Pablo and I decided to present Allan as younger man, more dynamic, with a touch of the savage about him. And that extends to sexy female characters such as Princess Ignosa in King Solomon's Mines."

Quatermain remains popular with movie studios. Such actors as Stewart Granger, Richard Chamberlain and  Sir Sean Connery have portrayed him.  Recently Sonar Entertainment announced a 10 episode TV series entitled Quatermain, expected to go into production on location in Africa later this year. Sequential Pulp’s King Solomon’s Mines will solicit mid 2013 followed by She.

Why Do Old Books Smell So Good? - Now online!
E-book sales may be on the rise, but some readers remain faithful to their physical novels. Is it the act of turning a page or the prospect of stumbling upon new stories in bookstore aisles that keeps hardcover readers coming back for more? Most will tell you that e-readers lack the multi-sensory experience of physical books -- the sight, the touch, and yes, the smell.

Like fresh rain or comfort food, sniffing a worn favorite novel is a calming experience.
But why do old books smell so great?

Yellowed Perils - Now online!
Today we introduce a new feature here on Yellowed Perils.
This ongoing feature will showcase a piece of great pulp art, so I’m cleverly calling it Great Pulp Art.

Kicking off is a great meta-cover by Graves Gladney for The Shadow story “The Wasp Returns” (Feb. 1, 1940).
What makes it interesting is the self-referencing magazine stand that The Shadow takes cover behind.
I’m not sure how well protected you would be by the two or three stacked pulps when the bullets fly.

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2012.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories.  More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine.

Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!

Greetings from Adventure House.  Auction #1 closed with some firsts for us.
#1 - the most amount of books ever sold in one evening.
#2 - the most amount of dollars we've ever sold in one evening.

With nearly $500,000 taken in, the Frank M. Robinson Auction has really started with a bang.  Not all lots met the reserve, and some lots sold were done so after the auction when we offered the high bidder the option to purchase the lot at Frank's reserve price. Yet a good number of lots sold above estimated value, proving...at least to us that, pulp collecting is still a vibrant, rewarding hobby.

We've posted the prices realized to the auction site, and updated some of the lots to reflect those lots that the high bidder has agreed to purchase, and there are some lots yet to be determined. We received some reports that people thought the auction went through without selling anything, let me put that rumor to rest.  We did pull down the results for a day, to allow the high bidders to determine if they were going to meet the reserve, and as previously reported, have restored those prices realized. Because runs of magazines have been sold in Auction #1, we've almost completed the process of marking those books as SOLD in the other auctions.  If you have found your bids missing, it's because the item has been sold.

Frank Robinson has expressed his sincere thanks to all those who have viewed, bid and purchased lots in this first auction.  Although we've removed the ability to bid on those items sold in the first auction, from the last 11 on the docket, there is still a boat-load of incredible stuff to bid on.

Auctions #7 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.

6) All auctions, #7 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.  Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times:

Frank M. Robinson Auction #7
April 13, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #8
April 14, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #9
May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #10
ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #11
May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Frank M. Robinson Auction #12
May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern

Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams!

Now live on Kickstarter - Make a pledge today!
The last day to pledge is April 28!

WE DID IT!
In just over a week, we hit and passed the goal!
The Astonishing Adventures of Doc Wilde Kickstarter is now a success!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your support, both through your pledges and your spreading the word about our little venture.
Now to see how much higher the Wildes can go!

Audiocomics: The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War!
Now available for pre-order!

AudioComics Pulp is proud to announce the first episode in its Pulp Adventures series: The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War. Created by Lars Anderson in the pages of Saucy Romantic Adventures and Mystery Adventures, The Domino Lady is the alter-ego of Ellen Patrick, a wealthy UC Berkeley graduate out to avenge the murder of her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, in the Raymond Chandler-esque Southern California of 1935. While she brandished a .45 and syringe of knockout serum, her greatest weapon was her sexuality, which she would use to disarm her unsuspecting opponents. Routinely stealing from her targets, she donates most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, leaving a calling card with the words “Compliments of the Domino Lady” behind.

Domino Lady appeared specifically in “spicy pulp” magazines, pulps that typically featured semi-pornographic short stories. Such magazines had smaller print runs (and were as a result a few cents higher in price) and were usually sold “under the counter” upon request. Only a handful of Domino Lady

were published, all of which were collected in Bold Venture Press’ Compliments of the Domino Lady, featuring a cover from the one and only Jim Steranko. Now, for the first time ever in both pulp and audio history, the Domino Lady rides the radio waves as Ellen Patrick’s alter-ego makes her first appearance in 1935 San Diego, investigating the disappearance of an actual one million dollar bill from an International Exposition. Complication: the head of security is her cocky ex-boyfriend…

The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War was recorded on November 19, 2011 in San Francisco, CA and will be released as an Mp3 download the week of April 23, 2012.

THE DOUBLE LIFE by Charles Asselineau
adapted by Brian Stableford

The Double Life (1858) is a collection of supernatural stories on the theme of dreams, glimpses into life beyond death and other posthumous experiences by Romantic author Charles Asselineau, better remembered today for his friendship with Charles Baudelaire, but also a significant pioneer in the literary development of dream materials.

It includes two remarkable items of supernatural fiction, "The Second Life" and ""The Musician's Hell", which translator Brian Stableford calls "eccentric masterpieces of the genre," as well as the experimental classic, "The Lie" (1846).

Trade Paperback Edition - Now available!

Michael Knox is the brash and arrogant assistant of renowned archaeologist Dr. Spiridon Simos. A chance encounter with a beautiful Egyptian woman at Dr. Simos' wedding in Corfu leads the young man on a whirlwind journey to Cairo where he barely survives the terrifying reincarnation of the ancient Pharaoh Khunum-Khufu.

A chain of events quickly unfold that embroils Knox with obsessive British agent, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and his pursuit of the master criminal, Dr. Fu Manchu. Slowly, the young man begins to piece together the threat posed to the world as Fu Manchu and his seductive, but sadistic daughter Koreani tear the dread secret society, the Si-Fan, apart.

Before Michael Knox can act on the intelligence in his possession, he must first survive death in a myriad of strange guises from a savage gorilla trained to crush a man's spine to the unrelenting pursuit of Margarita, the disarming dwarf assassin who brings terror to the Orient Express, to one thousand poisonous butterflies unleashed at the Munich Conference as Europe teeters on the brink of a Second World War.

As madness sweeps the globe, one hedonistic young man must examine his own life as he realizes the world's future hangs in the balance. The action moves swiftly from Greece to Egypt to Africa to Europe in a breathtaking battle of ideologies as Sax Rohmer's infamous creation seeks to realize THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU...

WINGS OF WAR by Lt. Scott Morgan
Now available!

Our latest title, Wings of War, collecting the first two novel-length adventures of John Masters, The Lone Eagle, is now available for purchase.  Visit our Wings of War listings page to learn more or order your copy today.

Pilot extraordinaire John Masters was an ace operative of the U.S. Secret Service when war broke out. So it was only natural that when the first squadron of Yank flyers went to France to strafe the Boche, Masters went too, only operating undercover.

Masters became the Lone Eagle of the Skies, displaying an indomitable courage and dynamic driving power to push any secret mission to a successful conclusion; a fighting ace whose dark and inscrutable movements became the scourge of all enemy powers.

Suspected by many, some men feared him, some men hated him. The alluring but deadly female German spy R-47 may have loved him. Masters became that mysterious Nemesis of the Western Front known only as The Lone Eagle!

Author: F.E. Rechnitzer writing as Lt. Scott Morgan
Genre: Adventure/Air War
ISBN: 978 -1-884449-20-8
Price: Trade paperback / 188 pages / Price: $19.95 US

"John Masters blasts his way across the skies in the kind of aerial action that will thrill modern readers as much as it did the pulp readers of the '30s. The Lone Eagle is a hero for the ages!"
Bill Crider, contributing author to the Nick Carter and Stone: M.I.A. Hunter series

"In the 1930s, the Lone Eagle set the bar for realistic action adventure with a tough guy loner able to survive against all comers. John Masters blazed a bullet-strewn path that series heroes of the 1970s and 1980s were hard pressed to follow."
Mel Odom, contributing author to the SuperBolan, Stonyman and Executioner series

"Combat ace John Masters was one of the most realistic air heroes of the pulp era. It's about damn time these bullet-torn tales were reprinted!"
Will Murray, contributing author to the Destroyer series

"Great fun!"
Stephen Mertz, contributing author to the Executioner, Tunnel Rats and Cody's Army series

THUNDER IN THE VOID by Henry Kuttner
Now available and arriving in comic shops April 11!

Prior to his marriage to fellow science-fantasy writer Catherine L. Moore in 1940, Henry Kuttner wrote stories of Lovecraftian horror, weird-menace “shudder” tales, and thrilling adventure stories. But he also wrote blood-n-thunder Space Opera stories in the vein of Edmond Hamilton (one of young Kuttner’s favorite authors) told with a rough-edge style similar to Kuttner’s protege Leigh Brackett.

THUNDER IN THE VOID is a massive collection of 16 vintage Space Opera stories selected from classic pulp magazines such as Weird Tales, Marvel Science Stories, Astonishing Stories, Super Science Stories, Super-Detective, and of course, Planet Stories. Most of the these are appearing in book form for the first time. An added bonus, Haffner Press is pleased to include anunpublished story by Kuttner, “The Interplanetary Limited.”

Award-winning author (and the only writer to stage a live performance of a Kuttner Space Opera story) Mike Resnick contributes an introduction reflecting on his admiration for stories by Kuttner (and Moore).

Hard Case Crime - Coming in 2012!

April 2012
BLOOD ON THE MINK by Robert Silverberg

Cover art by Michael Koelsch

Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to unravel...

Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years.

69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block

Cover art by Robert McGinnis

69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman.

It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite.

From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it.

STRANGE EMBRACE:
They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might.

It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life!

Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation.

FALSE NEGATIVE by Joseph Koenig
Cover art by Glen Orbik

JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!

Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave...

THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH by Ariel S. Winter
Cover art by Chuck Pyle

A breathtaking first novel written in the form of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.

1931
The body found in the gutter in France led the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her hot-tempered American husband.

1941
A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of a Hollywood starlet.

1951
A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...

Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber.

Queen of the Gangsters: Volume 1: Broadwalk Empire
Stories by Margie Harris
Introduction by David Bischoff

Margie Harris was the first woman hardboiled crime fiction writer in history. She wrote some of the toughest, roughest, most remorseless stories to be found in ’30s gangster pulps like Gangland Stories, Racketeer Stories and Mobs. Her avid readers questioned whether she could even be a woman. Who is this “Margie Harris”? they wondered aloud. Who is this frail who cracks wise from the inside?

I’m “just another twist,” she told them—a woman of mystery then—a woman of mystery now. She palled around with the death-row doomed and the Chicago underworld. She may have been a newswoman; may have worked in the law. One point was not in doubt. She slammed her typewriter like a machine gun, mowing down good guys and bad guys alike; shooting them, knifing them, blowing them up—lacing her prose with metaphysical commentary on the destinations of their damned souls.

Tough. Rough. Hardboiled. Through the explosive stories of Margie Harris we savor the meeting of fist and flesh, the clatter of machine guns, the stench of gas fumes from sleek Packards barreling down city streets, the bitterness of bootleg hooch, the glory of sin. A violent symphony of hot jazz.

In an age when gangsters were royalty, Margie Harris was their queen.

This inaugural anthology of her work collects eight explosive stories, an introduction by David Bischoff, and a bio of Margie Harris.

David Bischoff is a New York Times bestselling  author, editor and script writer whose credits include the classic fantasy series, The Gaming Magi, and work on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He teaches in an MFA program at Seton Hill University.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Quatermain: New action-adventure series based on the classic stories by H. Rider Haggard
Coming soon!

Sonar Entertainment Inc. and Ecosse Films have joined forces to develop and produce Quatermain. The new 10×60 action-adventure series is based on the classic swashbuckling stories by iconic Victorian-era author H. Rider Haggard. The announcement of the project, which is being introduced at Cannes during MIPTV, 2012, was made today by Stewart Till, CEO, Sonar Entertainment and Douglas Rae, Founder, Managing Director and Executive Producer, Ecosse Films. Rae will serve as executive producer on the project. Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle (Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal) are the writers.

Allan Quatermain, a rugged expedition leader based in the busy, wild port of Durban, has recently turned his back on the lucrative but bloodthirsty practice of game hunts. He is approached by Baron Henry, a wealthy German noble, and Clarice Good, the beautiful but disgraced daughter of a US Governor, to help them find Baron Henry’s brother, who’s been missing since embarking on a dangerous attempt to locate the lost diamond mines of King Solomon.

Quatermain resolves to take on the mission to pay for his young son’s schooling in London – a boy he hopes to give a life very different from his own. Using a rough-sketched map left behind, Quatermain and his African tracker Umbopa lead Baron Henry and Clarice set off across the scorching desert, where they encounter constant dangers and incredible, non-stop adventures along the way.

“Allan Quatermain is one of the greatest adventure heroes in all of literature. In the years since his introduction, he has subsequently inspired many hugely successful characters and franchises, including the Indiana Jones series,” said Till. “We are extremely excited about this opportunity to partner with Ecosse as we introduce Quatermain to a new generation and bring his timeless exploits into the 21st Century.”

“We are delighted to be developing this ambitious new international series with such an experienced and inspiring company as Sonar Entertainment,” added Rae. “Quatermain has huge potential for an international audience.”

Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle
Believe it or not, Tarzan turns 100 years old this year. In celebration of that milestone, Bossier City’s Al Bohl and his daughter, filmmaker Allison Bohl now of Lafayette have teamed up to produce a feature-length documentary entitled, Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.

In August of 1917 an eclectic band of filmmakers, actors and circus acrobats fought malaria, unbearable heat and the swamp of the Louisiana Atchafalaya River Basin to bring to the silver screen the best-selling book Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It was an instant hit with audiences, considered one of the top six motion pictures of the silent era, and one of the first 10 films to earn over one million dollars at the box office. The film was shot in Morgan City, Louisiana.

“My interest was first peaked when I was told many years ago that after making the movie the monkeys and apes refused to get back in the cages, so they left them,” said Bohl. “After research, I found out that the making of the film was as amazing as the movie itself.”

Over a period of four years, Al and his daughter combed through hundreds of photos and documents and videotaped up to seventy hours of interviews and locations. They interviewed scholars, authors, historians, fans, experts in merchandise, actors, an expert in primates, the curator of the Burroughs’ collection and the family of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Their travels in Louisiana included Morgan City, New Orleans, Patterson and Baton Rouge. They also gathered interviews in Los Angeles and Tarzana, California. More footage was taped in Ohio, Kentucky and Chicago, Illinois.

Bohl said, “Besides the ape question, our documentary investigates many things such as the claims of the killing of a lion on screen, the use of African Americans as natives and the life of Edgar Rice Burroughs who many feel is the father or grandfather of American science fiction.”

In addition, the Bohls re-edited the original Tarzan of the Apes silent film and added an entirely new orchestral musical score written by Kermit Poling of Shreveport.

The documentary and new version of the silent Tarzan film will be premiered on April 13 and 14, 2012 in Morgan City during the first Tarzan Festival in the character’s history. For more information on the festival contact:www.cajuncoast.com.

The Louisiana State Museum in Patterson, LA opens a year-long exhibition entitled “Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.” It features a wide variety of Tarzan memorabilia from the last one hundred years. “Tarzan continues to be famous on an international scale,” said Bohl, “I believe people will be absolutely amazed by the very large display of Tarzan books and merchandise in this exhibition.” One item of note is an actual painting done by the chimpanzee that died recently. He was believed to be the oldest living “Cheetah” from the Tarzan movies. For more information about the exhibition contact: www.louisianatravel.com/louisiana-state-museum-patterson.
