Agent 13 - Feature film in the works!

Universal is finalizing a deal to pick up Agent 13, a sci-fi project that sees Charlize Theron attached to star and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt attached to direct.  T.S. Nowlin is the writer behind the pitch, which is based on the comic book from 1988. It was created by Flint Dille and David Marconi.

I'm Tim Byrd. The Doc Wilde stories are my tribute to the pulp stories I loved growing up, and still love today. Like The Incredibles or the Indiana Jones films, they are suitable for kids and adults both,  full of action and humor and weird science and occult menace and lots of derring-do.

The Kickstarter project encompasses three Doc Wilde novels, all to be released by year’s end. The books will be available in trade paperback and ebook formats, and will have gorgeous covers and interior illustrations by the great Aussie comic book artist Gary Chaloner. 

Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom (previously published by Putnam) will reappear in an improved new edition in June, featuring not only the new artwork inside and out by Gary, but my “author’s cut” preferred edit and a new short Doc Wilde adventure.

In August, we’ll release Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull, the long-awaited second book, in which the Wildes face a mind-blowing mystery and a truly bizarre villain.

In November the third adventure will appear, Doc Wilde and The Dance of the Werewolf, a dark tale featuring lycanthropes and witchcraft. At least two more Doc Wilde adventures will follow in 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a patronage system in which creators present something they’d like to do and supporters can pledge funds to help them do it, in return for rewards varying from thank you's to copies of the items created to interactions of various sorts with the creator. The creator posts his intentions and a target amount of money he is trying to raise; if, within the time the Kickstarter runs, enough money is pledged to hit that target, then the Kickstarter succeeds. If the target amount is not met, the Kickstarter has failed and no money is exchanged.

The target for this project is $3,000, covering all three books. That’s a minimum goal, not a maximum; once it’s reached, the Kickstarter continues and people can still get involved. The funds will go toward art, book design, and editing, as well as paying for the writing. Any extra funds will be applied to producing more books.

I’ve come up with reward levels for pledges ranging from $5 for an ebook copy of one of the novels and the supporter’s name on the book’s acknowledgments page, up to $400 for signed limited editions of the books along with a bunch more cool stuff. There are only three slots available at the highest level, and four at the second highest, because they include exclusive one-of-a-kind rewards, so those are first come, first served.

The serial was subsequently published in book form later that same year by Methuen Press in the UK and McBride & Nast in the US. The novel chooses to divide the story into four sections. THE STORY: The immortal and insidious Doctor Fu Manchu requires artifacts which will lead him to the tomb of Genghis Khan to complete his conquest of Asia, and, subsequently, the world. In San Angeles, California, he convenes a meeting of the Si-Fan, an international conspiracy which helps him draw up his plans. When archeologist Dr. James Parker is killed so that Fu Manchu can obtain rare scrolls in his possession, his son Allan joins forces with Sir Denis Nayland Smith of the British Foreign Office to avenge his father's death.
TRANSFER QUALITY: This long-lost serial was traded among collectors in terrible quality VHS tape versions for years and has been released on DVD previously only in an edition mastered from an inferior 16mm dupe print. We are pleased to announce that we have been offered the opportunity to release this serial from a transfer created from of the original Republic master print which is of extremely high quality and not washed out or missing detail in dark areas. The original film was created in the 1970s from the Republic Pictures 35mm original print or negative, we're not sure which. The picture quality is spectacular, however, though the image quality is slightly higher than that of an average DVD, the resolution achieved in the new digital transfer will not make a potential Blu-Ray release look substantially different enough from a DVD to call for one so the release will be on standard DVD only.

James Bond - Vintage Books & Amazon Publishing to reprint James Bond books!
Vintage Publishing has acquired the ten-year licence to republish all fourteen of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books in the UK, along with his two non-fiction titles, The Diamond Smugglers and Thrilling Cities. They will take over from Penguin in April, and will publish Fleming’s entire Bond collection in both ebook and print format in the summer of this year.

Thomas & Mercer, an imprint of Amazon Publishing, has acquired a ten-year license to publish all fourteen of Ian Fleming’s James Bond books in North America, as well as his two works of non-fiction, Thrilling Cities and The Diamond Smugglers. From summer 2012, all sixteen titles will be reissued both in print and as ebooks, to thrill a new generation of readers.

Robert E. Howard - Paradox Entertainment and Davis Films sign Solomon Kane film / TV license!
Davis Films and Solomon Kane Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary to Paradox Entertainment Inc., have signed a license agreement for film and TV rights to cutlass-wielding Puritan Solomon Kane, created by Robert E. Howard.

The minimum guarantee for the five-year term generates a positive cash flow in the second quarter of at least 3 MSEK. Paradox retains all license and merchandise rights.

Davis Films, headed by producer Samuel Hadida, previously held the film and TV rights together with Wandering Star. Together they released the first Solomon Kane film in 2009 featuring, among others, James Purefoy, Max von Sydow, and Rachel Hurd-Wood.

“We’re very happy to expand our relationship with Davis Films and Samuel Hadida as they have great experience in building successful, international franchises,“ said Fredrik Malmberg, President of Paradox Entertainment.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 2012!
Only seven weeks to go until Robert E. Howard Days 2012 in beautiful Cross Plains, Texas. There’s still plenty of time to send in your pre-registration and make plans to attend to best two days in Howard fandom. If you check the REH DAYS 2012 page (tab at the top), you’ll find a few revisions for your attendance pleasure. Here’s a partial list.

1. The Friday night Celebration Banquet has been moved to the Baptist Church Family Life Center, which is one block north of the Library. There’s three times as much space there, so Project Pride won’t be limited to a certain amount of seats. (But please pre-register so they know how many are coming!) Dinner is chicken-fried steak with all the fixin’s!

2. The Howard House and Museum will be open on Thursday June 7th from 2-4 pm. No docents will be on duty, but you may take a tour and stop in the Gift Shop! This will get you early access to the new REH Museum t-shirt, among other great REH gifts!

3. There WILL be a panel at 9:00 pm on Friday night after the Banquet/Silent Auction/REH Foundation Awards at the church. FISTS AT THE ICE HOUSE will be presented by REH boxing experts Mark Finn and Chris Gruber with assistance from Jeff Shanks. This will take place AT the old Ice House on Main Street (well, on the empty concrete slab behind it). Bring your flashlights. We’re trying something new this year – and yes, we have permission…

4. There will again be some extemporaneous REH (only) poetry reading under the street light in the back yard of the House on Friday night. We’re calling it REH Streetlamp Poetry.

CELEBRATING EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AND
 THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES AND JOHN CARTER‼
Convention Update
Well, the convention is now just over a week away, so we figured it was time for one more update.  Both our hotel nights and pre-registrations are up from the last few years (and we set a record for attendance last year), and we sold out of our 143 tables a few months ago.  So we're hoping for our biggest show yet!

The images for the Friday night (April 27) auction from the estate of Jerry Weist are now available on our Facebook page.

A pdf of the auction catalog itself is on our website, available for downloading and completely searchable.  We've highlighted many authors and artists in the various 200 lots, which run to around 1800 pulps.

If you're arriving on Thursday (April 26), make sure to stop by the con suite (which should be room 1611).  Beginning around 7:00 pm, you'll be able to pick up your registration materials, including your passes to our special showing of JOHN CARTER at the AMC Theater next to the hotel.  As always, we won't be set up to take new registrations Thursday (we'll start taking those on-site Friday morning), so if you'd like to attend the screening, please remember to pre-register.

A couple of other highlights we thought we'd mention:

  -- Saturday (April 28) at 12:30 we'll be showing TARZAN: LORD OF THE LOUISIANA JUNGLE, a new documentary on the shooting of the 1918 silent TARZAN OF THE APES (which will follow the documentary).  Producer Al Bohl will be attending the convention.  We have a full slate of ERB film programming running Friday and Saturday -- make sure to check the website for details!

  -- Our Friday evening panel, before the estate auction, will be THE ERB ILLUSTRATORS by Gary Gianni & Randy Broecker.  A lively overview of well-known and obscure artists who have visualized the stories of the prolific author.  A visual presentation will accompany the discussion.  Gary Gianni has illustrated the stories of  Ray Bradbury , R.E. Howard, Michael Chabon and George R.R. Martin. He drew Prince Valiant for 8 years and a variety of comics ranging from Batman to The Shadow.  Randy Broecker is author of "Fantasy of the 20th Century" and is noted for over three decades of work in the field of fantasy and horror illustration.

  -- Our Saturday evening panel, before the Saturday night auction, will be EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS: A LOOK AT THE FIRST 100 YEARS AND BEYOND - A look at the great fictional worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs from the Tarzan novels to the Underground world of Pellucidar to Beyond the Farthest Star. We'll look at the 100 year legacy of adventure and see what's new in the future.  Panelists:  Joan V. Bledig: Member of the Chicago chapter of the local Burrough Bibliophiles: The Muckers will moderate the discussion; Mike "The Tarzan Guy" Conran, collector of everything ERB; Douglas Klauba, Moonstone cover artist and John Carter of Mars fan; Bob Garcia, co-editor of the forthcoming WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS anthology; & Michael Hudson, Publisher with Sequential Pulp Comics, a specialty imprint producing six Authorized ERB and one Kline property under a co-publishing arrangement with Dark Horse Comics.

  -- In addition to our Friday night auction, as usual, we'll have one on Saturday night which will draw from a variety of sources.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only (but see the HOTEL section for details on how to get a $10 refund on your membership!).  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Ages 13 & under are free.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com).
DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 130 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2012.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the eighth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine.  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set.

AUCTIONS:  We will have 2 auctions, Friday and Saturday nights.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories.  More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine.

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby!
HOTEL:  For our twelfth show, for the fifth year in a row we’re at the Westin Lombard, in the Western suburbs of Chicago.  The Westin is located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $109/night, same as the last 2 years (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. Central time on April 5, 2012!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  Movie theaters are also a short walk away.  And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away.  If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel.  Please mention the con when booking rooms.  Also, since it greatly benefits the convention to have folks stay at the Westin during the show, if you attend the con and stay at the Westin, we will refund you $10 of your membership at the show (limit 2 refunds per hotel room).

PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. 3) Searching for an author, or title?  Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in?  Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers.  a) You may use the search function built into the auction site.  Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.'  You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses.  When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid.  b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.'  This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order.

4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM.

I'm Tim Byrd. The Doc Wilde stories are my tribute to the pulp stories I loved growing up, and still love today. Like The Incredibles or the Indiana Jones films, they are suitable for kids and adults both,  full of action and humor and weird science and occult menace and lots of derring-do.

The Kickstarter project encompasses three Doc Wilde novels, all to be released by year’s end. The books will be available in trade paperback and ebook formats, and will have gorgeous covers and interior illustrations by the great Aussie comic book artist Gary Chaloner. 

Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom (previously published by Putnam) will reappear in an improved new edition in June, featuring not only the new artwork inside and out by Gary, but my “author’s cut” preferred edit and a new short Doc Wilde adventure.

In August, we’ll release Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull, the long-awaited second book, in which the Wildes face a mind-blowing mystery and a truly bizarre villain.

In November the third adventure will appear, Doc Wilde and The Dance of the Werewolf, a dark tale featuring lycanthropes and witchcraft. At least two more Doc Wilde adventures will follow in 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a patronage system in which creators present something they’d like to do and supporters can pledge funds to help them do it, in return for rewards varying from thank you's to copies of the items created to interactions of various sorts with the creator. The creator posts his intentions and a target amount of money he is trying to raise; if, within the time the Kickstarter runs, enough money is pledged to hit that target, then the Kickstarter succeeds. If the target amount is not met, the Kickstarter has failed and no money is exchanged.

The target for this project is $3,000, covering all three books. That’s a minimum goal, not a maximum; once it’s reached, the Kickstarter continues and people can still get involved. The funds will go toward art, book design, and editing, as well as paying for the writing. Any extra funds will be applied to producing more books.

I’ve come up with reward levels for pledges ranging from $5 for an ebook copy of one of the novels and the supporter’s name on the book’s acknowledgments page, up to $400 for signed limited editions of the books along with a bunch more cool stuff. There are only three slots available at the highest level, and four at the second highest, because they include exclusive one-of-a-kind rewards, so those are first come, first served.

Thomas Sigismund Stribling (1881-1965) penned many short works for the periodicals of his day—adventure, satirical, boys adventure, detective and science fiction—which appeared in Everybody's, The Century Magazine, Holland's Magazine, Youth's Companion, American Boy and Adventure. For the later, he is well remembered as the author of a series of detective stories featuring psychologist sleuth Doctor Poggioli.

Ripped from the pages of Adventure are two unreprinted short novels of science fiction, "Web of the Sun" and "The Green Splotches."

But the short story form could not corral the ambitious T.S. Stribling who would win the 1933 Pulizer Prize for the Novel for his work, "The Store."

 THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES AND JOHN CARTER‼
We're pleased to announce that in connection with our theme this year
 -- celebrating 100 years of John Carter and Tarzan --
JOHN CARTER will be coming to the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention this year!

We've booked a screen at the AMC Yorktown 17 theater, to show JOHN CARTER exclusively for con goers the evening of Thursday, April 26, at around 10:00 pm. We're still working out some of the logistics with the theater, but we should be giving out free passes to con goers in the con suite that evening, beginning around 7:00 pm, along with the pre-registration packets. To get a pass, you'll need to be pre-registered (since like always, we won't be set up to take new registrations that evening). Passes will be given out on a first come, first served basis, but we've booked a large enough theater that, barring an incredible increase in our usual attendance on Thursday evening, there should be plenty of passes for everyone who wants to attend. It should be great to see the film with an audience full of pulp fans and we'll hope to see you there!  It's a great film -- Deb & Doug are about to go see it for the fourth time this weekend.

Also, one last reminder -- in order to get the convention rate (which is highly discounted from the regular rate) for hotel rooms at our con hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, you need to book your rooms by 5:00 pm central time on April 5, 2010.
Our hotel has extended the time in which you can register for a room at the convention rate --
reservations must now be made with the hotel by 5:00 pm central on April 12, 2012 in order to get the hotel rate.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only (but see the HOTEL section for details on how to get a $10 refund on your membership!).  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Ages 13 & under are free.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com).
DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 130 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2012.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the eighth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine.  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set.

AUCTIONS:  We will have 2 auctions, Friday and Saturday nights.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories.  More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine.

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby!
HOTEL:  For our twelfth show, for the fifth year in a row we’re at the Westin Lombard, in the Western suburbs of Chicago.  The Westin is located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $109/night, same as the last 2 years (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. Central time on April 5, 2012!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  Movie theaters are also a short walk away.  And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away.  If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel.  Please mention the con when booking rooms.  Also, since it greatly benefits the convention to have folks stay at the Westin during the show, if you attend the con and stay at the Westin, we will refund you $10 of your membership at the show (limit 2 refunds per hotel room).

Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction.  For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes.  Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount.  Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. 3) Searching for an author, or title?  Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in?  Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers.  a) You may use the search function built into the auction site.  Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.'  You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses.  When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid.  b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.'  This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order.

4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM.

I'm Tim Byrd. The Doc Wilde stories are my tribute to the pulp stories I loved growing up, and still love today. Like The Incredibles or the Indiana Jones films, they are suitable for kids and adults both,  full of action and humor and weird science and occult menace and lots of derring-do.

The Kickstarter project encompasses three Doc Wilde novels, all to be released by year’s end. The books will be available in trade paperback and ebook formats, and will have gorgeous covers and interior illustrations by the great Aussie comic book artist Gary Chaloner. 

Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom (previously published by Putnam) will reappear in an improved new edition in June, featuring not only the new artwork inside and out by Gary, but my “author’s cut” preferred edit and a new short Doc Wilde adventure.

In August, we’ll release Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull, the long-awaited second book, in which the Wildes face a mind-blowing mystery and a truly bizarre villain.

In November the third adventure will appear, Doc Wilde and The Dance of the Werewolf, a dark tale featuring lycanthropes and witchcraft. At least two more Doc Wilde adventures will follow in 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a patronage system in which creators present something they’d like to do and supporters can pledge funds to help them do it, in return for rewards varying from thank you's to copies of the items created to interactions of various sorts with the creator. The creator posts his intentions and a target amount of money he is trying to raise; if, within the time the Kickstarter runs, enough money is pledged to hit that target, then the Kickstarter succeeds. If the target amount is not met, the Kickstarter has failed and no money is exchanged.

The target for this project is $3,000, covering all three books. That’s a minimum goal, not a maximum; once it’s reached, the Kickstarter continues and people can still get involved. The funds will go toward art, book design, and editing, as well as paying for the writing. Any extra funds will be applied to producing more books.

I’ve come up with reward levels for pledges ranging from $5 for an ebook copy of one of the novels and the supporter’s name on the book’s acknowledgments page, up to $400 for signed limited editions of the books along with a bunch more cool stuff. There are only three slots available at the highest level, and four at the second highest, because they include exclusive one-of-a-kind rewards, so those are first come, first served.

This is issue #3 in the Old Sleuth dime novel series, first published in the Fireside Companion for 26 weeks from February 16, to August 13, 1883.

A bloody handkerchief on the banks of the Bronx river is found.  This leads to other clues: signs of a struggle, bloody fingerprints on a tree, hair ripped from the scalp a head, a crushed diamond ring.  Also a woman is missing.  But whether she is involved or not in these mysterious discoveries is undetermined, but it all looks very suspicious.  Old Sleuth is called out of retirement when everyone else has failed to find a clue.  What seems like an almost impossible task, considering the time that has elapsed before Old Sleuth takes up the case is quickly dismissed as the famous detective doggedly uncovers one clue after another before unraveling the once unfathomable mystery.

James Bond - William Boyd to write new James Bond novel!
Ian Fleming Publications has announced that William Boyd will write the next James Bond novel. Boyd's yet untitled novel will take Bond back to the 1960s and will be published in Fall 2013 by Jonathan Cape in the UK and HarperCollins in the U.S and Canada.

William Boyd, the award-winning and bestselling author of Restless and Any Human Heart, is to write the next James Bond novel.

The novel, which is yet to be titled, will be published in the UK and Commonwealth in autumn 2013 by Jonathan Cape – Ian Fleming’s original publisher and an imprint of Vintage Publishing – and simultaneously by HarperCollins Publishers in USA & Canada. Rights were sold in the English language by Jonny Geller of Curtis Brown, on behalf of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd.

William Boyd is the third author in recent years to be invited by the Ian Fleming estate to write an official Bond novel, following in the footsteps of the American thriller writer Jeffery Deaver, who wrote Carte Blanche in 2011, and Sebastian Faulks, whose Devil May Care was published to mark Ian Fleming’s centenary in 2008.

Boyd is a writer of international acclaim whose 11 novels and short-story collections have been translated into over 30 languages with many of them adapted for film and television. While the details and title of the next 007 adventure naturally remain secret, the author has revealed that next year’s publication will mark a return to 'classic Bond' and will be set in the late 1960s.

Boyd comments: "When the Ian Fleming estate invited me to write the new James Bond novel I accepted at once. For me the prospect appeared incredibly exciting and stimulating – a once-in-a-lifetime challenge. In fact my father introduced me to the James Bond novels in the 1960s and I read them all then – From Russia with Love being my favourite."

The FIRST Action-Adventure Hero Returns in a new series of Quatermain Adventures from Sequential Pulp Comics!

Allan Quatermain may not be as well known as Tarzan or Indiana Jones, but he adventured his way through lost civilizations long before those two characters’ adventures had been put into writing.

Quatermain first appeared in Sir H. Rider Haggard's 1886 novel, King Solomon's Mines, and he set the standard for generations of adventure heroes. Haggard's second most famous character, the iconic Ayesha followed a year later in the rousing "lost civilization" yarn, She. Both Quatermain and Ayesha proved to be so popular that Haggard wrote one of the earliest versions of a "crossover" with Allan and She. Both characters have proven to be remarkably durable over the decades in both print and film and continue to thrill audiences today.

With a resurgence in pulps and classic adventure at an all time high, Sequential Pulp’s Michael Hudson felt a graphic novel series built around the adventures of Allan Quatermain was due and thus was born the first two books A Quatermain Adventure: King Solomon’s Mines and A Quatermain Adventure: She.  Michael Hudson says, "Our version of King Solomon's Mines is the first in a series of wild  adventures that take Quatermain and his companions all over the world...and even beneath it. When offered scripting reins on the project, veteran action-adventure novelist Mark (James Axler) Ellis saw it as an opportunity to "re-imagine" Quatermain and his milieu.  Ellis says,  "Quatermain is not just the template for all modern adventure heroes, but for the 'Englishman who went native' character archetype.  I thought it would be interesting to examine that a bit in our series.  So Pablo and I decided to present Allan as younger man, more dynamic, with a touch of the savage about him. And that extends to sexy female characters such as Princess Ignosa in King Solomon's Mines."

Quatermain remains popular with movie studios. Such actors as Stewart Granger, Richard Chamberlain and  Sir Sean Connery have portrayed him.  Recently Sonar Entertainment announced a 10 episode TV series entitled Quatermain, expected to go into production on location in Africa later this year. Sequential Pulp’s King Solomon’s Mines will solicit mid 2013 followed by She.

CELEBRATING EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS AND
 THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES AND JOHN CARTER‼
We're pleased to announce that in connection with our theme this year
 -- celebrating 100 years of John Carter and Tarzan --
JOHN CARTER will be coming to the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention this year!

We've booked a screen at the AMC Yorktown 17 theater, to show JOHN CARTER exclusively for con goers the evening of Thursday, April 26, at around 10:00 pm. We're still working out some of the logistics with the theater, but we should be giving out free passes to con goers in the con suite that evening, beginning around 7:00 pm, along with the pre-registration packets. To get a pass, you'll need to be pre-registered (since like always, we won't be set up to take new registrations that evening). Passes will be given out on a first come, first served basis, but we've booked a large enough theater that, barring an incredible increase in our usual attendance on Thursday evening, there should be plenty of passes for everyone who wants to attend. It should be great to see the film with an audience full of pulp fans and we'll hope to see you there!  It's a great film -- Deb & Doug are about to go see it for the fourth time this weekend.

Also, one last reminder -- in order to get the convention rate (which is highly discounted from the regular rate) for hotel rooms at our con hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, you need to book your rooms by 5:00 pm central time on April 5, 2010.
Our hotel has extended the time in which you can register for a room at the convention rate --
reservations must now be made with the hotel by 5:00 pm central on April 12, 2012 in order to get the hotel rate.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only (but see the HOTEL section for details on how to get a $10 refund on your membership!).  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Ages 13 & under are free.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com).
DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 130 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2012.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the eighth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine.  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set.

AUCTIONS:  We will have 2 auctions, Friday and Saturday nights.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories.  More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine.

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby!
HOTEL:  For our twelfth show, for the fifth year in a row we’re at the Westin Lombard, in the Western suburbs of Chicago.  The Westin is located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $109/night, same as the last 2 years (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. Central time on April 5, 2012!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  Movie theaters are also a short walk away.  And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away.  If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel.  Please mention the con when booking rooms.  Also, since it greatly benefits the convention to have folks stay at the Westin during the show, if you attend the con and stay at the Westin, we will refund you $10 of your membership at the show (limit 2 refunds per hotel room).

Greetings from Adventure House.  Auction #1 closed with some firsts for us. 
#1 - the most amount of books ever sold in one evening. 
#2 - the most amount of dollars we've ever sold in one evening. 

With nearly $500,000 taken in, the Frank M. Robinson Auction has really started with a bang.  Not all lots met the reserve, and some lots sold were done so after the auction when we offered the high bidder the option to purchase the lot at Frank's reserve price. Yet a good number of lots sold above estimated value, proving...at least to us that, pulp collecting is still a vibrant, rewarding hobby. 

We've posted the prices realized to the auction site, and updated some of the lots to reflect those lots that the high bidder has agreed to purchase, and there are some lots yet to be determined. We received some reports that people thought the auction went through without selling anything, let me put that rumor to rest.  We did pull down the results for a day, to allow the high bidders to determine if they were going to meet the reserve, and as previously reported, have restored those prices realized. Because runs of magazines have been sold in Auction #1, we've almost completed the process of marking those books as SOLD in the other auctions.  If you have found your bids missing, it's because the item has been sold. 

Frank Robinson has expressed his sincere thanks to all those who have viewed, bid and purchased lots in this first auction.  Although we've removed the ability to bid on those items sold in the first auction, from the last 11 on the docket, there is still a boat-load of incredible stuff to bid on.
Auctions #7 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
1) You must be registered to bid.  Please either register, or update your registration by going to the website: www.adventurehouse.com and click on the Auction Logo.  Then click on the link for the first Auction and click on the link 'Click Here to Register to Bid.'  This will allow you to either register for the first time, or update your file, and get your bidder number and password....

2) PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU PLAN ON BIDDING! Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction.  For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes.  Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount.  Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. A scenario could be as follows:

Next Bid Required states - $100, the reserve is $300 and you place a bid for $500, then the accepted bid will be $500, not $300. 

If the reserve has been met, then a second field will be visible under the 'Your Maximum', and this allows you to place a MAX BID allowing our system to bid for you.  A suggested scenario:

Next Bid Required states - $100, place an initial bid of $100, and continue to place subsequent bids based on the Next Bid Required until you reach the reserve price, or at least as high as you'd like to bid.  If you do reach the reserve, then you may place a MAX BID in the 'Your Maximum' bid field, and our system will bid for you.

Please DO NOT place a MAX BID under the YOUR BID field.  It will accept that as your bid price.  If you have made this mistake, please contact us and I'll fix it for you.

3) Searching for an author, or title?  Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in?  Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers.  a) You may use the search function built into the auction site.  Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.'  You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses.  When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid.  b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.'  This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order.

4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM.

5) All prices at final gavel price, DOES NOT include the BUYERS PREMIUM.  The Buyers Premium and credit card fee [if the invoice is paid by credit card or Paypal] will be added on at the end of the auction.  The initial invoice will not include the cost of shipping, we will add that once we receive your decision on preferred shipping method.

I'm Tim Byrd. The Doc Wilde stories are my tribute to the pulp stories I loved growing up, and still love today. Like The Incredibles or the Indiana Jones films, they are suitable for kids and adults both,  full of action and humor and weird science and occult menace and lots of derring-do.

The Kickstarter project encompasses three Doc Wilde novels, all to be released by year’s end. The books will be available in trade paperback and ebook formats, and will have gorgeous covers and interior illustrations by the great Aussie comic book artist Gary Chaloner. 

Doc Wilde and The Frogs of Doom (previously published by Putnam) will reappear in an improved new edition in June, featuring not only the new artwork inside and out by Gary, but my “author’s cut” preferred edit and a new short Doc Wilde adventure.

In August, we’ll release Doc Wilde and The Mad Skull, the long-awaited second book, in which the Wildes face a mind-blowing mystery and a truly bizarre villain.

In November the third adventure will appear, Doc Wilde and The Dance of the Werewolf, a dark tale featuring lycanthropes and witchcraft. At least two more Doc Wilde adventures will follow in 2013.

For those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it’s a patronage system in which creators present something they’d like to do and supporters can pledge funds to help them do it, in return for rewards varying from thank you's to copies of the items created to interactions of various sorts with the creator. The creator posts his intentions and a target amount of money he is trying to raise; if, within the time the Kickstarter runs, enough money is pledged to hit that target, then the Kickstarter succeeds. If the target amount is not met, the Kickstarter has failed and no money is exchanged.

The target for this project is $3,000, covering all three books. That’s a minimum goal, not a maximum; once it’s reached, the Kickstarter continues and people can still get involved. The funds will go toward art, book design, and editing, as well as paying for the writing. Any extra funds will be applied to producing more books.

I’ve come up with reward levels for pledges ranging from $5 for an ebook copy of one of the novels and the supporter’s name on the book’s acknowledgments page, up to $400 for signed limited editions of the books along with a bunch more cool stuff. There are only three slots available at the highest level, and four at the second highest, because they include exclusive one-of-a-kind rewards, so those are first come, first served.

AudioComics Pulp is proud to announce the first episode in its Pulp Adventures series: The Domino Lady: All’s Fair in War. Created by Lars Anderson in the pages of Saucy Romantic Adventures and Mystery Adventures, The Domino Lady is the alter-ego of Ellen Patrick, a wealthy UC Berkeley graduate out to avenge the murder of her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, in the Raymond Chandler-esque Southern California of 1935. While she brandished a .45 and syringe of knockout serum, her greatest weapon was her sexuality, which she would use to disarm her unsuspecting opponents. Routinely stealing from her targets, she donates most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, leaving a calling card with the words “Compliments of the Domino Lady” behind.

Domino Lady appeared specifically in “spicy pulp” magazines, pulps that typically featured semi-pornographic short stories. Such magazines had smaller print runs (and were as a result a few cents higher in price) and were usually sold “under the counter” upon request. Only a handful of Domino Lady

were published, all of which were collected in Bold Venture Press’ Compliments of the Domino Lady, featuring a cover from the one and only Jim Steranko. Now, for the first time ever in both pulp and audio history, the Domino Lady rides the radio waves as Ellen Patrick’s alter-ego makes her first appearance in 1935 San Diego, investigating the disappearance of an actual one million dollar bill from an International Exposition. Complication: the head of security is her cocky ex-boyfriend…

Prior to his marriage to fellow science-fantasy writer Catherine L. Moore in 1940, Henry Kuttner wrote stories of Lovecraftian horror, weird-menace “shudder” tales, and thrilling adventure stories. But he also wrote blood-n-thunder Space Opera stories in the vein of Edmond Hamilton (one of young Kuttner’s favorite authors) told with a rough-edge style similar to Kuttner’s protege Leigh Brackett.

THUNDER IN THE VOID is a massive collection of 16 vintage Space Opera stories selected from classic pulp magazines such as Weird Tales, Marvel Science Stories, Astonishing Stories, Super Science Stories, Super-Detective, and of course, Planet Stories. Most of the these are appearing in book form for the first time. An added bonus, Haffner Press is pleased to include anunpublished story by Kuttner, “The Interplanetary Limited.”

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Quatermain: New action-adventure series based on the classic stories by H. Rider Haggard
Coming soon!

Sonar Entertainment Inc. and Ecosse Films have joined forces to develop and produce Quatermain. The new 10×60 action-adventure series is based on the classic swashbuckling stories by iconic Victorian-era author H. Rider Haggard. The announcement of the project, which is being introduced at Cannes during MIPTV, 2012, was made today by Stewart Till, CEO, Sonar Entertainment and Douglas Rae, Founder, Managing Director and Executive Producer, Ecosse Films. Rae will serve as executive producer on the project. Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle (Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal) are the writers.

Allan Quatermain, a rugged expedition leader based in the busy, wild port of Durban, has recently turned his back on the lucrative but bloodthirsty practice of game hunts. He is approached by Baron Henry, a wealthy German noble, and Clarice Good, the beautiful but disgraced daughter of a US Governor, to help them find Baron Henry’s brother, who’s been missing since embarking on a dangerous attempt to locate the lost diamond mines of King Solomon.

Quatermain resolves to take on the mission to pay for his young son’s schooling in London – a boy he hopes to give a life very different from his own. Using a rough-sketched map left behind, Quatermain and his African tracker Umbopa lead Baron Henry and Clarice set off across the scorching desert, where they encounter constant dangers and incredible, non-stop adventures along the way.

Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle
Believe it or not, Tarzan turns 100 years old this year. In celebration of that milestone, Bossier City’s Al Bohl and his daughter, filmmaker Allison Bohl now of Lafayette have teamed up to produce a feature-length documentary entitled, Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.

In August of 1917 an eclectic band of filmmakers, actors and circus acrobats fought malaria, unbearable heat and the swamp of the Louisiana Atchafalaya River Basin to bring to the silver screen the best-selling book Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It was an instant hit with audiences, considered one of the top six motion pictures of the silent era, and one of the first 10 films to earn over one million dollars at the box office. The film was shot in Morgan City, Louisiana.

“My interest was first peaked when I was told many years ago that after making the movie the monkeys and apes refused to get back in the cages, so they left them,” said Bohl. “After research, I found out that the making of the film was as amazing as the movie itself.”

Over a period of four years, Al and his daughter combed through hundreds of photos and documents and videotaped up to seventy hours of interviews and locations. They interviewed scholars, authors, historians, fans, experts in merchandise, actors, an expert in primates, the curator of the Burroughs’ collection and the family of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Their travels in Louisiana included Morgan City, New Orleans, Patterson and Baton Rouge. They also gathered interviews in Los Angeles and Tarzana, California. More footage was taped in Ohio, Kentucky and Chicago, Illinois.

Bohl said, “Besides the ape question, our documentary investigates many things such as the claims of the killing of a lion on screen, the use of African Americans as natives and the life of Edgar Rice Burroughs who many feel is the father or grandfather of American science fiction.”

In addition, the Bohls re-edited the original Tarzan of the Apes silent film and added an entirely new orchestral musical score written by Kermit Poling of Shreveport.

The documentary and new version of the silent Tarzan film will be premiered on April 13 and 14, 2012 in Morgan City during the first Tarzan Festival in the character’s history. For more information on the festival contact:www.cajuncoast.com.

The Louisiana State Museum in Patterson, LA opens a year-long exhibition entitled “Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.” It features a wide variety of Tarzan memorabilia from the last one hundred years. “Tarzan continues to be famous on an international scale,” said Bohl, “I believe people will be absolutely amazed by the very large display of Tarzan books and merchandise in this exhibition.” One item of note is an actual painting done by the chimpanzee that died recently.
