Adventure House - Frank M. Robinson Auctions!
Greetings
from Adventure House. Auction #1 closed with some firsts for us.
#1 - the most amount of books ever sold in one evening. #2 - the most amount of dollars we've ever sold in one evening. With nearly $500,000 taken in, the Frank M. Robinson Auction has really started with a bang. Not all lots met the reserve, and some lots sold were done so after the auction when we offered the high bidder the option to purchase the lot at Frank's reserve price. Yet a good number of lots sold above estimated value, proving...at least to us that, pulp collecting is still a vibrant, rewarding hobby. We've posted the prices realized to the auction site, and updated some of the lots to reflect those lots that the high bidder has agreed to purchase, and there are some lots yet to be determined. We received some reports that people thought the auction went through without selling anything, let me put that rumor to rest. We did pull down the results for a day, to allow the high bidders to determine if they were going to meet the reserve, and as previously reported, have restored those prices realized. Because runs of magazines have been sold in Auction #1, we've almost completed the process of marking those books as SOLD in the other auctions. If you have found your bids missing, it's because the item has been sold. Frank Robinson has expressed his sincere thanks to all those who have viewed, bid and purchased lots in this first auction. Although we've removed the ability to bid on those items sold in the first auction, from the last 11 on the docket, there is still a boat-load of incredible stuff to bid on. All auctions, #6
through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
1) You must be registered to bid. Please either register, or update your registration by going to the website: www.adventurehouse.com and click on the Auction Logo. Then click on the link for the first Auction and click on the link 'Click Here to Register to Bid.' This will allow you to either register for the first time, or update your file, and get your bidder number and password.... 2) PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU PLAN ON BIDDING! Our auction site is closer to a live auction, than an eBay auction. For those lots that receive a bid with less than a minute left, will automatically extend that lot for an additional 3 minutes. Allowing the under-bidder to rebid if so desired. Another example of our auction being closer to a live auction, is that in a live auction, if you yelled out bid price for an item, the auctioneer will accept that....regardless if auctioneer was looking for a lesser amount. Therefore if you enter a bid higher than what is called for in 'Next Bid Required', the system will accept that. PLEASE READ OVER THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS: For those auctions that HAVE NOT met their reserve price, a single field listed as 'Your Bid' is visible, allowing you to place in the 'Next Bid Required' price. A scenario could be as follows: Next Bid Required states - $100, the reserve is $300 and you place a bid for $500, then the accepted bid will be $500, not $300. If the reserve has been met, then a second field will be visible under the 'Your Maximum', and this allows you to place a MAX BID allowing our system to bid for you. A suggested scenario: Next Bid Required states - $100, place an initial bid of $100, and continue to place subsequent bids based on the Next Bid Required until you reach the reserve price, or at least as high as you'd like to bid. If you do reach the reserve, then you may place a MAX BID in the 'Your Maximum' bid field, and our system will bid for you. Please DO NOT place a MAX BID under the YOUR BID field. It will accept that as your bid price. If you have made this mistake, please contact us and I'll fix it for you. 3) Searching for an author, or title? Need to know which auction a certain book is going to be available in? Well there are several methods you may go about seeking the answers. a) You may use the search function built into the auction site. Enter an author name, or a title, or even just a date into the field marked 'Keywords:', make sure the 'Search In' drop-down box is set to 'ALL.' You can then refine the search by clicking on the drop-down box next to the Keywords field, and choose from among the choices to limit the number of responses. When the auction site finds all the answers, it will display the item, which auction it's in, and allow you to click on a link to go to that auction and bid. b)You can also click on the link at the top of every page listed as 'AUCTION INDEX.' This PDF will allow you to do a search by title, or date, or even allow you to print out all the items, in alphabetical and publication order. 4) For those lots that DO NOT reach reserve price, the high bidder will receive an offer to purchase the lot at the reserve price, plus the 10% BUYERS PREMIUM. 5) All prices at final gavel price, DOES NOT include the BUYERS PREMIUM. The Buyers Premium and credit card fee [if the invoice is paid by credit card or Paypal] will be added on at the end of the auction. The initial invoice will not include the cost of shipping, we will add that once we receive your decision on preferred shipping method. 6) Auctions #6 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids. Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times: Frank M. Robinson Auction #6 March 31, 2012 - 08:00 - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF TARZAN OF THE APES‼ March Update!
With less than 2 months remaining until the 12th Windy City Pulp
and Paper Convention (April 27-29, 2012), we thought the time was right
for a quick update. Particularly since this year's convention celebrates
Edgar Rice Burroughs and the 100th anniversary of his two iconic heroes,
Tarzan and John Carter, and we're now only 2 days away from the release
of Disney's "John Carter!"All 143 dealer tables have sold out. While we've always sold all our tables, this year they sold faster than ever before, so perhaps that's a hopeful sign that the economy is turning around a bit (or maybe it just means that pulp fans are anxious for the convention season to start!). If you'd like to be added to the waitlist in case we have any cancellations, please let us know. We're still in the process of photographing the nearly 1800 pulps that will be in the Friday night (April 27) auction from the estate of Jerry Weist. A catalog of all 200 lots, as well as pictures of all of the lots, should be available on our website and on our facebook site soon. But there's lots of stuff! The film schedule has now been set and the schedule, along with detailed film notes, is also available on our website. As one might expect, with our ERB theme most of the films center around Tarzan, though a few non-Tarzan ERB films also are on the program. We'll also be showing the new documentary, "Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle," with producer Al Bohl in attendance. The art show will focus on ERB and his work, and will feature rare pulps and hardcovers on display in addition to art. If you have any ERB related art you'd be willing to loan for the display, please let us know -- we're also doing displays on the non-ERB art of artists associated with ERB (such as St. John) and on art related to books by ERB's competitors (such as Otis Adelbert Kline). If you plan on staying at the convention hotel (which we encourage!), please remember that the deadline for booking as part of our room block is 5:00 pm Central time on April 5, 2012. For those arriving the day before the convention, the con suite will be open on Thursday night (April 26). If you're pre-registered, you'll be able to pick up your badge and materials Thursday night in the con suite, but we won't be selling at the door registrations until Friday morning. We'll hope
to see you at the Windy City!
MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only (but see the HOTEL section for details on how to get a $10 refund on your membership!). We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public). Ages 13 & under are free. Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com). DEALER INFO: Dealer setup begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from 11:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday. For dealers, tables are 6’ long. Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs. Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80. The dealer room will have around 130 tables. Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2"). The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 15, 2012. Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@comcast.net for ad and other program book matters (other than payment). ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the eighth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine. If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show hours will be posted to the website when they are set. AUCTIONS: We will have 2 auctions, Friday and Saturday nights. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories. More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine. WEBSITE: www.windycitypulpandpaper.com is the con’s website. We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the con, so please check it for the most recent information. Also be sure to check out and join our Facebook page! CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Thursday night (come pick up your badges) until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby! HOTEL: For our twelfth show, for the fifth year in a row we’re at the Westin Lombard, in the Western suburbs of Chicago. The Westin is located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport. Room rates are $109/night, same as the last 2 years (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. Central time on April 5, 2012!). Parking is free. The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent (within walking distance) to Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center. For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos. Movie theaters are also a short walk away. And if you like to gamble, the Aurora River Boat is about 10 miles away. If you are flying in and not renting a car, please check the website for details on various cab companies and shuttle services that offer fixed price transportation to and from the hotel. Please mention the con when booking rooms. Also, since it greatly benefits the convention to have folks stay at the Westin during the show, if you attend the con and stay at the Westin, we will refund you $10 of your membership at the show (limit 2 refunds per hotel room). PAY BY: Paypal (account register@windycitypulpandpaper.com) or check payable to Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, LLC. Send checks to: 13 Spring Lane, Barrington Hills, IL 60010) |

All auctions, #3
through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
6) All auctions, #3 through #12 are currently open and accepting bids. Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times: Frank M. Robinson Auction #3 March 10, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #4 March 23, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #5 March 24, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #6 March 31, 2012 - 08:00 - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #7 April 13, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #8 April 14, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #9 May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #10 ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #11 May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #12 May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams! |

The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 12-13, 2012!
Greetings fans of The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, 1976-2011.
I'm writing with the best possible news about the future of old time radio
fandom in the metro-New York/New Jersey area. There will be a convention
in Newark this fall - if enough of you are willing to participate. Were you one of the people stalking the halls during that final Friends of Old Time Radio Convention, reveling in the big crowd, exuberant atmosphere and great community? One of the ones who thought "it would be a shame if this went away forever," or "I hope I get a chance to spend time with these people again." Well, your wishes have been granted. Celebrating Audio Theater - Old & New, a brand-new convention, will take place October 12-13, 2012 at the same old Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, NJ that was home to Friends of Old Time Radio all those years. It will feature live old time radio recreations as well as performances of modern audio drama, and a mix of panels and historical presentations familiar to FOTR attendees. Please see our website above for a more complete description of what we're up to. Also please see the "Buy Your Tickets" page and associated PayPal buttons and do so. CATON is a brand new, volunteer, non-profit organization. FOTR had a healthy cash cushion saved after 36 years. CATON has a few contributions from the initial committee members and that's it. If we don't sell at least 200 dinner tickets by July 1, 2012, the event won't happen. That's the minimum service for the banquet hall at the hotel. Last year's huge, enthusiastic, FOTR crowd was inspirational. We know many of you came because it was the "last" event. We hope that enough of you realized once you came that this community - and the art form that inspired it - is worth saving and perpetuating. Please join us. Since this list is comprised of FOTR veterans, I'll predict some of the Q&A but of course, write back with any questions of your own. Q. Who's in charge here? A. Our overall chairperson is Steven M. Lewis of The Gotham Radio Players. Sean Dougherty (me) is handling marketing, Craig Wichman, a long-time FOTR actor, is handling guest relations. Maggie Thompson has been acting as secretary and Jill Schissel has been handling the incorporation/legal issues. Q. What about Jay Hickerson? A. Jay is comfortably retired in Florida and while he has given us great advice about how to get the event going, he is not actively involved in CATON. Also, for anyone who hadn't heard, he suffered a bad fall just after the last FOTR convention. He is fully healed and doing great. Q. Which special guests are you inviting? A. It's March so the guest list hasn't started to take shape. We expect to draw on the New York-city area actors who have participated in FOTR in recent years. Arthur Anderson of The Mercury Theater and Let's Pretend has agreed to be our honorary chairman for the first event but beyond him it's too early to tell. Unless we get an overwhelming (and fast) reaction in terms of early ticket sales, it is unlikely we will be able to invite special guests from outside the area but FOTR itself went years before adding West Coast guests. We are committed to a mix of professional casts as well as providing a forum for talented amateur groups, similar to FOTR. Q. So what are you going to do? A. We are soliciting proposals now via the website for presentations and performances at CATON. If you are a historian, actor, director, author, or other person with something to add, please check the site, fill out the form and e-mail us and we'll let you know. I'd expect to see many familiar faces on stage as well as some new ones as we incorporate the best of modern audio drama into the program. Q. What about the dealers? A. We're reaching out and seeing who would be interested in selling at this event. Radio Spirits has already contacted us and expressed interest. Beyond that, well, buy your tickets. If we can tell dealers that pre-sales are strong, we'll have more of them. Q. Why is the new convention only two days instead of four? A. The first FOTR convention was only a single day. Committing to a minimum attendance for a banquet on Thursday night seemed a little too ambitious for a start-up event. Q. How many performances do you expect to have? A. We discussed that number at the last meeting and depending on how long we want to go in the evening it could be as many as ten in the two days. Keep watching the "2012 Program" page on the website. Right now, it's empty but it will fill in as we evaluate proposals (as of last Thursday, we already had two to evaluate). Q. Will there be a new e-mail list for the new event to which I can also subscribe? A. Yes, probably but frankly there isn't one right now. It's likely the next message to this list will be about that. In the meantime, our website, twitter feed, the old Friends of Old Time Radio Convention Facebook page, and the new CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew Facebook page, are the best ways to get frequent updates. Q. How Can I help? A. Forward this e-mail to anyone you think might be interested. I'm also putting together a canned "this is Celebrating Audio Theater Old & New" paragraph that bloggers can paste into their sites. Write me for it, it should be ready by tonight or tomorrow. Please find "CelebratingAudioTheaterOldandNew" on Facebook and like us. Please following the @CATOANCON twitter feed. We know, CATON was taken, so we needed to add the "a." It's not ideal. There is a "donate" button on the left side of our website's home page. If you are feeling especially helpful, please donate to us. Of course, the best donation would be to buy your tickets now and trust us to deliver the show. Ticket purchases will be refunded if the convention doesn't occur for any reason. Donations will be returned only if we didn't need the money for something we couldn't cancel. If you want us to be able to invite Chuck McCann or Shirley Mitchell from the West Coast, the donate button is really good way to help make that happen. We also still need volunteers for a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity at the event. If you think you have some time between now and October to help us with marketing, logistics, web design, mailing list administration, event staffing or anything similar, please let us know and we WILL find something for you to do. Please contact me with any questions. See you - everyone together now - in Newark in October!
All auctions, #2
through #12 are currently open and accepting bids.
6) All auctions, #2 through #12 is currently open and accepting bids. Each of those future auctions will close at the following dates and times: Frank M. Robinson Auction #2 March 09, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #3 March 10, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #4 March 23, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #5 March 24, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #6 March 31, 2012 - 08:00 - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #7 April 13, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #8 April 14, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #9 May 04, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #10 ENDING ON: May 05, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #11 May 18, 2012 - 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Frank M. Robinson Auction #12 May 19, 2012 - 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm Eastern Hope you will find the pulp of your dreams! |

Hard Case Crime -
Coming in 2012!
Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver
is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized
crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government
sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime
lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one
that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins
to unravel...
Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years. May 2012 69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block Cover art by Robert McGinnis 69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman. It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite. From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it. STRANGE EMBRACE: They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might. It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life! Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation. June 2012! JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH
HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!
Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave... First publication ever!

John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

Discussion of all genres is welcome and we particularly want to hear about any rare and unusual paperbacks or stories *about* paperbacks that you might be able to share. We discuss the cover artists, the writers, the publishers, and anyone and everyone connected with the great world of vintage paperback books. Read a great old book lately? Come on in and tell us about it! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VintagePaperbacks/ Western Pulps: This list is dedicated to the discussion of Western pulp magazines -- the characters, the authors, the stories, the paperback reprints, and anything else connected with Western pulps. Though the primary emphasis is on pulps, we also discuss non-pulp Western novels, movies, comics, etc. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WesternPulps/ |
