Altus Press - Coming soon!

Altus Press has announced a collection of The Semi-Dual stories J.U. Giesy & Junius B. Smith.  The Semi-Dual stories were an an occult detective series. The first series appeared in THE CAVALIER in 1912, which is what Altus Press will be reprinting in the first volume.

Prince Abduel Omar of Persia, the astrologist popularly known as “Semi-Dual,” came to the public’s notice, and begins a career which lasted for decades. Semi-Dual becomes one of the greatest occult detectives of the years before WW2, using his telepathy, insight into humans, and infallible astrological predications to protect a number of innocent men and women (usually women) from a variety of evil men. Semi-Dual works from his office on the 20th floor of the Urania Building in New York City. Semi-Dual’s enemies range from the very humble–gangsters and treacherous French Foreign Legion officers–to the mightily wicked–the Black Brotherhood, a cult of devil-worshipers devoted to the cause of “Erlik, Commander of the Hosts of All Evil.”

Coming in April | Pre-order now!

Gods of Opar: Tales of Lost Khokarsa collects for the first time anywhere Philip José Farmer’s epic Khokarsa cycle, including the never-before-published conclusion to the trilogy, The Song of Kwasin.

In Hadon of Ancient Opar, the young hero Hadon journeys from his outpost city to the heart of the ancient African empire of Khokarsa, battling in the Great Games for the chance to win the king’s crown. But just as Hadon stands upon the precipice of victory, the tyrannical King Minruth usurps the throne and overturns the beneficent, centuries-old rule of the priestesses of Kho. Now Hadon must set out upon a hero’s journey unlike any other—to hunt down a living god and return with his bounty.

Illustrators  - Coming Spring 2012!
A new art quarterly devoted to the finest
European Illustrators of the 20th Century!

First issue Spring 2012 - more details, including ordering, coming soon!

Illustrators is all about some of the most iconic images ever to see print. In the pages of Illustrators you will read about some of the most inspired artists to commit their art to print. These are the people who with brush, pen and pencil were capable of transporting their audiences to the farthest reach of their imaginations.

The audiences that many of these artists were catering for were international, their work was collected and admired by readers the length and breadth of Europe and the US. But with the passing of years and the ascendancy of new media, much of this brilliant and inspirational work is falling from the collective conscious.

Illustrators will remedy that by presenting you with a publication that four times a year will guide you through the stories behind these artists, the publishers that commissioned them, the agents that promoted them, the friends and partners that posed for them and the crazy stuff such as the artist who created his incredible covers in an unfurnished bedsit with a parrot for company. All this and more will be revealed in each edition of Illustrators.

These features written by some of the most eminent enthusiasts of this oft neglected art form will provide a contextualization to the truly fabulous artwork which we will be presenting you with in each and every issue of Illustrators. Wherever possible we will be bringing you scans of some of the most incredible examples of original artwork by the artists concerned.

Early issues of Illustrators will be bringing you the art of Fortunino Matania, Reginald Heade, Chris Foss, John Millar Watt, Luis Garcia, Jordi Penalva, Giorgio De Gaspari and Graham Coton, as well as artists who although equally brilliant are in many ways unknown and unsung.

With contributions from writers and artists such as David Roach, David Ashford, Steve Holland, Rian Hughes and Norman Wright as well as access to many of the artists and/ or their agents and their families we aim to provide the most authoritative insight into the stories behind the UK and Europe's most inspired and inspirational artists.

Our first issue debuts with a feature on Denis McLoughlin and an interview with the legendary Ian Kennedy looking back on his sixty two years in the business.

Pulp Ark 2012 - Lifetime Achievement Award Winner announced: Howard Hopkins!
The Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient for 2012 has been selected.  Tommy Hancock, partner in Pro Se Productions, the sponsor of PULP ARK, the Official New Pulp Convention as well as the founder and organizer of Pulp Ark, reported to PULPED! host Ron Fortier that the selection process for the Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2011, had been completed and a recipient named.

Ten people considered to be involved in the New Pulp Movement significantly at this point were invited to participate on the Lifetime Achievement Selection Committee.  Each of these Committee members were given an opportunity to nominate three people for the Award.  The top three from these nominations were then placed on a ballot and the Committee voted from that ballot.  The members of the Committee included, Hancock, Barry Reese, Derrick Ferguson, Ron Fortier, Bobby Nash, Art Sippo, Van Plexico, Matt Moring, Michael Brown, and Joe Gentile.

To qualify for the recognition, a person must have been heavily involved in Pulp in some capacity significantly for at least ten years and had a known impact on Pulp.  According to Hancock, the recipient of this year's Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award is Howard Hopkins.

Known for his ability to work in multiple genres as well as his absolute love for all things Pulp, Howard first came to the notice of many Pulp fans as the publisher of Golden Perils, one of the first and premier Pulp fanzines.   Hopkins' publishing career involved many stories in many genres and included him working not only as a writer, but as a Pulp historian and an Editor.

This award will be given posthumously as Hopkins passed away suddenly on January 12, 2012.  "This recognition," Hancock acknowledged, "is well deserved.  Nominated last year, Howard was the fifth highest nominated in 2011 for the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award.   One needs simply to look at the voluminous list of fiction as well as non fiction and editing Howard did to see that this award is the least that he is worthy of.   Many of us have learned how to better our craft because of Howard.  And we will continue to learn from him for years to come."

The award will be given to Howard's wife, Dominique, on her husband's behalf.
The Awards Ceremony will be held during Pulp Ark 2012 on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #6:
Dan Fowler: SNATCH

In the flood of pulp magazines featuring the hard-hitting exploits of a single hero, only one magazine read as if its stories had been torn out of the headlines. That was G-Men, starring the closest equivalent to Eliot Ness and his Untouchables the pulps dared offer up.

The origins of this exemplary series are obscure. Leo Margulies, editor-in-chief of the Thrilling chain, may have been eyeing rival titles such as Secret Service Operator #5 and Secret Agent X, thinking there’s gold in fictionalizing the exploits of undercover men. Early in 1935, Margulies let it be known in the trade that he was planning to issue Secret Service Detective Stories—a bland and uninspiring title if one was ever floated.

But Secret Service Detective Stories never materialized. In April, James Cagney starred in a blockbuster film, G Men.  That July, a radio program by that same name debuted to strong ratings. It later became even more famous as Gang Busters. Pulp editors always looked to Hollywood and the headlines for inspiration. Margulies didn’t need to be hit over the head.  He scrapped the Secret Service concept and appropriated the popular title, which had been coined by gangster George “Machine Gun” Kelly when, after being surrounded by armed F.B.I. agents in 1933, threw up his hands and cried, “Don’t shoot, G-Men! Don’t shoot, G-Men!” Or so the legend goes. G-Man stood for Government Men, specifically F.B.I. agents.

These were the days of iron-fisted Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover battling back the gangster tide that was overrunning major cities all across America. Seeing the local law-enforcement was outnumbered and outgunned—if not compromised—by organized crime he reorganized the old Bureau of Investigation into America’s first national police force—sanctioned to cross state lines in the pursuit of justice. In the pulps, the urban menace of mobster crime had given rise to The Shadow and all the superhuman crime-fighters who followed.

Five years into this ever-shifting reality, Margulies and his editors must have decided the reading public was ready for a crime-crusher who didn’t wear a black cape or a weird mask, and who operated within the law. They were ready for the real deal.

So they created Special Agent Daniel Fowler. Young but hardened, the product of the FBI’s new scientific investigation methods, Fowler and his aides, Larry Kendal and Sally Vane, formed a special roving unit of the Bureau, willing and able to rush to any state in the Union to combat counterfeiters, extortionists and sundry foreign spies.

To write the exploits of such a non-nonsense hero, they understood that they needed a writer of a different cut than the boys who were grinding out The Phantom Detective every month. Maybe they tried a few of their Phantom authors and they flopped. In any case, they called in George Fielding Eliot, a former major in U. S. intelligence.

Titled after an underworld slang term for kidnapping, with the Lindbergh baby kidnapping fresh in the public consciousness, and inspired by the notorious Purple Gang, the premier exploit of Dan Fowler and his team was called Snatch! It was an instant success among readers who had been reading daily newspaper accounts of the F. B. I.’s successful crusade against John Dillinger and “Baby Face” Nelson, and other otherwise-unstoppable Public Enemies. Their bodies were fast piling up—filled with government lead, with no sign of The Shadow or the Spider anywhere in real life.

Seared by crime, trained by Hoover, and motivated by a stern sense of justice, Special Agent Fowler went on to a long and successful career spanning nearly two decades, and a single 1937 film, Federal Bullets. Only the death of the pulp magazine industry put an end to his fame.

In order to do justice to this riveting hero, we’ve recruited the impeccable-voiced Richard Epcar to narrate Snatch! If you like Richard's hard-hitting performance as much as we do, expect to hear a big announcement regarding Richard Epcar and Radio Archives next month. We can't wait!

Age of Aces
Now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. A mental marvel from birth, he was so terrifyingly effective that the Allies referred to him as “The Phantom Ace of G-2.” But to the Germans he was “The Brain-Devil,” whose penetrating green eyes were both a legend and a nightmare.

Keyhoe’s Philip Strange stories ran for nine years—from 1931 through 1939—in the pages of Flying Aces magazine. This first volume in our new series contains six exciting tales of terror skies! It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

Originally published between February 13 and August 13, 1944, “Triumph in Tropica” marked the transition from Alex Raymond to Austin Briggs as artist for the strip. The storyline picks up where the preceding installment, “Battle for Tropica” left off with Flash and Dale entering the capitol with Tartara and her son, Timor. The cowardly Timor turns Flash and Dale in to the secret police. A gunfight ensues ending in Timor’s death. Flash, Dale, and Tartara manage to elude the police with the aid of Trico, the beggar who poses as a half-blind cripple.

THE STORY: The immortal and insidious Doctor Fu Manchu requires artifacts which will lead him to the tomb of Genghis Khan to complete his conquest of Asia, and, subsequently, the world. His gruesome fanged Dacoit slaves help him eliminate anyone who refuses to accommodate his will. In San Angeles, California, he convenes a meeting of the Si-Fan, an international conspiracy which helps him draw up his plans. When archeologist Dr. James Parker is killed so that Fu Manchu can obtain rare scrolls in his possession, his son Allan joins forces with Sir Denis Nayland Smith of the British Foreign Office to avenge his father's death.

TRANSFER QUALITY:
This long-lost serial was traded among collectors in terrible quality VHS tape versions for years and has been released on DVD previously only in an edition mastered from an inferior 16mm dupe print. We are pleased to announce that we have been offered the opportunity to release this serial from a transfer created from of the original Republic master print which is of extremely high quality and not washed out or missing detail in dark areas. The original film was created in the 1970s from the Republic Pictures 35mm original print or negative, we're not sure which. The picture quality is spectacular, however, though the image quality is slightly higher than that of an average DVD, the resolution achieved in the new digital transfer will not make a potential Blu-Ray release look substantially different enough from a DVD to call for one so the release will be on standard DVD only.

DOUBLE DANGER TALES #64
Kindle Edition now available!

Compere had not been able to get Peggy away from the door leading to the stairwell, and he knew that danger lay in that direction. He increased his deadly fire, but had become a non-moving target himself. A bullet from one of the gangster’s guns clipped the little gas container on his belt, and suddenly two skull-faced apparitions appeared, one on each wrist of his hands. With a slight movement of his wrists, the gas-filled balloons were disconnected and flew from his outstretched arms with a loud hiss, each flying in opposite directions.

The appearance of the banshees was so sudden, gangsters turned their fire on the two escaping gas balloons, and Compere accounted for another four hoodlums as their guns had been diverted from him.

Unfortunately, his luck was running out. He heard a light sound from behind, a short sigh from Peggy, and then he felt the cold hard steel of the barrel of a revolver digging into his spine. A vicious voice grunted from behind, "Drop your cannons, friend, or this girl gets a bullet in the head!"

Gary Lovisi - Announcing THREE GREAT NEW BOOKS!
Sherlock Holmes: The Baron's Revenge by Gary Lovisi
In 1902 Sir James Damery enlisted the aid of Sherlock Holmes to prevent the daughter of an old friend from marrying a womanizing Austrian nobleman named Adelbert Gruner who was suspected of murdering his first wife. Dr. Watson chronicled the case as "The Adventure of the Illustrious Client." By its conclusion, Gruner was exposed to the young lady by Holmes and a former prostitute mistress took her own revenge on the man permanently disfiguring him.

Holmes believed the matter concluded. He is proven wrong when a hideous murder occurs rife with evidence indicating to him that the Baron has returned. Soon the Great Detective will learn he has been targeted for revenge in a cruel and sadistic fashion. Not only does the Baron wish his death but he is obsessed with causing Holmes emotional suffering -- nothing less than the complete and utter destruction of the Great Detective in body and soul.

Sherlock Holmes: The Baron's Revenge spins a fast paced tale of horror and intrigue that is both suspenseful and poignant, all the while remaining true to Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. It is a thrilling sequel to a classic Holmes adventure that fans will soon be applauding.

Lovisi is a Mystery Writer's of America Edgar Nominated author for the Best Short Story of the year which featured Sherlock Holmes. Now he presents his first-ever exciting Sherlock Holmes original novel containing one of the most vile and dangerous villains The Great Detective has ever faced!

MARVEL TALES Limited Edition Hardcover - Coming soon!
Lance Thingmaker, who did a limited-edition hardcover of all 18 issues of the '30s fanzine, THE FANTASY FAN, is planning a similarly hardcover, slipcased reprint of the entire run of MARVEL TALES.

MARVEL TALES was an early "semi-pro" magazine, five issues of which were edited and published by William Crawford in 1934/35. Production values were low, paper stock was cheap, and prices are high on the occasional copies of various issues that turn up on eBay and on the book search sites.
MARVEL TALES #2 contains Robert E. Howard's "The Garden of Fear." MARVEL TALES #3 contains Robert Bloch's first published story, "Lilies."

For a complete list of each issues' contents, see http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?24239.

The publisher, who goes by the name of Lance Thingmaker, is offering the book at $40 postpaid.
Lance Thingmaker maintains an eBay website at the link below, although the book has not yet been posted to the site.
He accepts Paypal payments at creepycult@gmail.com, which is also the address where he can be contacted for information on other payment methods.

I own a copy of the FANTASY FAN limited-edition hardcover and can attest to the quality of production of that volume.
Only 100 numbered copies of the slipcased edition will be done, so time is of the essence if this appeals to you.

Thanks to Robert Lichtman for the tip!

DEATHWALKER by R. A. Jones
TOUCHED BY DEATH

Airship 27 Productions announces the release a brand new fantasy novel by noted comic book writer, R.A. Jones; “Deathwalker.”  Jones is best remembered for is early work for Malibu Comics where he created the adult action series, “Scimitar” along with artist Rob Davis.  Now he turns his imagination to a different kind of hero, this one inspired by a certain Robert E. Howard barbarian.

While on his vision quest, the young Cheyenne brave High Bird encounters the spirit of Death.  The powerful wraith recruits the boy as his new agent in the world and High Bird returns to his tribe altered forever as Deathwalker.  When the Cheyenne become the target of a vengeful Pawnee Shaman, Stands Alone, only Deathwalker can stand between this evil sorcerer and the total destruction of his people.

Writer R.A. Jones has woven a new and exciting fantasy set against the background of authentic Native American lore and culture.  He dares to imagine what this wild untamed land would have become had there been no conquests by outside civilizations beyond the great waters.  Here is an old world re-envisioned in a bold new action packed adventure worthy of pulp writers such as Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Featuring stunning cover art by Laura Givens with interior illustrations by Michael Neno.

Airship27 is proud to present R.A. Jones’ DEATHWALKER, another original and quality title in the New Pulp movement.

Blogging Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon, Part Twenty – "Battle for Tropica"
“Battle for Tropica” was the twentieth installment of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between July 18, 1943 and February 6, 1944, “Battle for Tropica” marks the final installment to be completely illustrated by the character’s creator, Alex Raymond. The storyline picks up where the preceding installment, “Fiery Desert of Mongo” left off with the roguish desert chieftain Gundar pledging to aid Flash in restoring Desira to the throne of Tropica. Desira is reluctant to trust the outlaw chief, but Gundar makes it known that he has aspirations of becoming the Queen’s royal consort for his troubles. Meantime, Gundar’s discarded queen, Pequit vows to make sure that Gundar never reach the throne of Tropica.

Some of the guests announced to date are:
James Darren, Singer and Actor
Tall, good-looking James Darren was a student of acting coach Stella Adler and made his name in the 1950s in a series of teenage-themed films. A better actor than most of his contemporary teenage heartthrobs, which is probably why he was the only actor who appeared in all three Gidget movies, Gidget (1959), Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963).  It was in 1965 that James Darren was approach to co-star in a television series, The Time Tunnel, which has since become a pop culture classic.

Robert Colbert from The Time Tunnel and Maverick
Robert Colbert became an enduring television icon when he got the starring leads on Maverick and The Time Tunnel, two classic televisions series that can still be seen in reruns today.

Ron Ely, Doc Savage and Television’s Tarzan
The 15th screen Tarzan (if you don’t count Gordon Griffith) was to have played a Tarzan impersonator in a projected Mike Henry television show, which never materialized. He had been tested 14 months earlier when Henry got the part. In 1966, Ron Ely signed to play the lead role of Tarzan (a.k.a. Lord Greystoke), in a successful television series that ran two full seasons. Already well educated and fed up with civilization, Tarzan returned to the jungle and, more-or-less assisted by chimpanzee Cheetah and orphan boy Jai, waged war against poachers and other bad guys. Guest stars included Julie Harris, Jock Mahoney, James Earl Jones, Ethel Merman, Simon Oakland and Diana Ross, among others. The series was so successful he even starred in two movies made from that series in 1970. Ely claims that he refused to use a stunt double in his vine-swinging or animal fights, and as a result he was often injured on the set. It has been noted by Tarzan fans that Ely’s physical appearance and dialogue were much more like those of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character than could be said for any other Tarzan.

In 1975, Ron Ely won the sought-after role of Doc Savage for George Pal’s 1975 motion-picture of the same name. While fans of the pulp magazines don’t feel the movie lives up to the expectations of the printed page, it’s still a fun film. During the late thirties, Doc Savage and his five Amazing Adventurers are sucked into the mystery of Doc’s father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc’s father’s death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold. It was reported that a sequel had been filmed in the Lake Tahoe area simultaneously with the principal photography for the first Doc Savage movie, but the sequel was never completed because of the poor box office for that first film. George Pal, famous for The Time Machine (1960) and War of the Worlds (1953), passed away shortly after this movie was released in theaters, possibly another reason why a sequel was never completed.

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES Arriving in comic shops February 15!
The Chalice of Death

By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Three complete novels of mystery in space from Grand Master Robert Silverberg explode back into print for the first time in decades in this thrilling new Planet Stories collection! These extremely scarce tales originally appeared in the legendary Ace Double novel series, and represent a future multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author bridging the explosive, action-oriented science fiction adventures of the early pulps with more introspective themes of the new wave that swept sci-fi in the 1960s.

In The Chalice of Death, a human from the far edge of space must track down the legendary planet that birthed his race tens of thousands of years ago. For the legends hold that the long-forgotten Earth holds the Chalice of Life, and the Chalice of Life holds immortality!

In Starhaven, interplanetary fugitive Johnny Mantell flees authorities to the artificial pirate world known as Starhaven, sanctuary for the criminals and misfits of space. There he finds a new home for himself—as well as questions about his past, his future, and his very identity itself!

In Shadow on the Stars, deep space colonist Baird Ewing returns to Earth for the first time in the thousand years since his ancestors first departed, seeking aid against the aliens who seek to destroy his colony. But the weapon he finds upon the ancient Earth can save only one planet, and Ewing must choose between his two home worlds.

Seldom or never reprinted since their original appearances and with a new introduction by the author, these three novels of science fiction adventure blaze back onto the scene, revealing early masterworks of one of the genre’s most gifted and celebrated storytellers!

Pro Se Productions: PULP OBSCURA
Lester Dent's Fade Foster and and Lynn Lash to appear in new stories!

Pro Se Productions, an up and coming Publisher in the New Pulp field and known for original characters, announces today an exciting addition to its first foray into classic Pulp characters, the PULP OBSCURA line.

As previously announced, Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, the premier producer of Pulp Reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, will be producing collections of New Pulp tales based on characters that Altus is reprinting.  These characters will not necessarily be the better-known Pulp characters, but rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from Pulp’s Golden Era.  Although many of these characters, such as Richard Knight, the aviator hero featured in the first PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the Public Domain, Pro Se reveals today that not only will there be volumes of PULP OBSCURA involving characters requiring permission and licensing to use, but the two characters currently in question were created by possibly the best known and respected Classic Pulp Author ever.

“Pro Se is absolutely proud,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions stated, “to be able to say that with the sanction of the representative of the heirs of Norma Dent, PULP OBSCURA will include collections featuring brand new tales written by modern writers of two heroes created and originally written by Lester Dent.”

Later in 2012, Altus Press has plans to reprint the original stories written by Lester Dent of two of his characters, both falling into the ‘gadget detective’ category, a particular niche that Dent often wrote in and one that definitely carried over into his Doc Savage stories.  These two characters, Foster Fade, the Crime Spectacularist and Lynn Lash will appear in Altus reprint editions and will also appear in anthologies of New Pulp tales featuring the characters as companion volumes to the Altus reprints.

“I can’t really express,” Hancock said, “how absolutely cool it is to be able to be a part of bringing two classic Dent characters back to life in a sense.   Although some Pulp Fans, particularly Dent devotees, are aware of Fade and Lash, they are largely unknown characters to many readers today.  To be able to not only have their original adventures in print again with Altus Press, but to also be producing and creating brand new stories to continue where Mr. Dent left off and to bring awareness to not just these characters, but to the wonderful variety of characters that still live from the Pulp Age as well as the lesser known work of Dent himself, its simply astounding for me to even be associated with it.”

Although definite dates for publishing have not been established, Hancock stated that recruiting the writers for the first two anthologies, one featuring each character, would begin immediately and would follow the same standard applied to previous PULP OBSCURA titles.  Anyone interested in having the opportunity to propose a tale for either THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE, THE CRIME SPECTACULARIST VOLUME ONE or THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH VOLUME ONE simply needs to email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net.   Those interested will then, according to Hancock, be given an opportunity to make proposals in the coming days.

"Thanks,” Hancock stated, “to Matt Moring from Altus Press for coming to Pro Se and wanting to bring new life to all these classic characters that have sat dormant far too long. And much appreciation to Will Murray and the Dent heirs for allowing Pro Se and the writers we’ll gather to be a part of something the man many of us consider the best Pulp creator ever started.”

THE OFFICIAL NEW PULP CONVENTION
BATESVILLE, ARKANSAS

APRIL 20-22, 2012

PRO SE PRODUCTIONS announces today that PULP ARK 2012, The Official New Pulp Convention, will be held April 20-22, 2012.  PULP ARK will be held once again in the scenic Ozark Mountains in Batesville, Arkansas, a town with a rich history and full of life all its own that sets it apart from other small town venues.  PULP ARK 2012 will be held at the Independence County Fairgrounds in Batesville with ample room for vendors, guests, panels, and multiple outside activities!

"This is our second year," Tommy Hancock, PULP ARK Founder and Coordinator states, "and even though our first year was in many ways indicative of the first year of anything, we actually have quite a lot to live up to. With our 30 or so guests last year, we found the perfect mix of Convention and Creators' Conference.  We found a formula that works for PULP ARK that is a little different than other conventions and conferences and we have to make sure we continue that aspect of it.  Also, though, we have to make sure PULP ARK 2012 is an event that brings in fans from all over Arkansas, nearby states, and from wherever else, fans that will interact with our guests and make it a successful weekend for all.  So, with our eye on keeping some of the closeness that developed on the conference side of PULP ARK, this is all going to be a full blown Fan's Convention experience as well.  Guaranteed."

Hancock states that announcements will be forthcoming with details regularly concerning PULP ARK 2012 and can be found at the links below.

"We have," Hancock said, "returning guests and will be revealing those in the next day or so.  We are also pleased to announce we have many new guests  attending, including writers, publishers, artists, and several cool enthusiasts and performers.  One such group is the Clockwork Mechanalists, a fantastic Steampunk group out of Memphis, Tennessee.  Steampunk is an exciting area of interest and, in my opinion, as pulp as anything can be and the Mechanilists will be at PULP ARK to entertain and educate us all!"  Hancock stated that future announcements would provide more information on the  Mechanalists, Steampunk, and even a surprise announcement related to the Mechanalists and the Convention/Conference.  Hancock also promised that other guests and performers would receive similar spotlights as given the Mechanilists here in coming announcements.

PULP ARK 2012 will also have several contests going in association with the event.  "We will once again," Hancock stated, "present the Pulp Ark Awards for excellence in Pulp Fiction in the previous year.  But there'll be other awards presented in an unique way as well.  We'll be announcing several writing and art contests within the next week and the prizes for some of them are actually exciting prospects for the winning creators."

A major selling point of PULP ARK 2012 to guests, exhibitors, vendors, and performers who may be interested in attending is that there is no charge for single table space and no membership fee for vendors, guests or performers.  "We want these people to come and entertain and meet fans.  At this point in our life as a convention/conference, it's most important to us to make sure PULP ARK has a great lineup of guests and talent."

With the promise of releases and announcements rather consistently from now until PULP ARK 2012, Pro Se Productions invites you as fans, writers, creators, performers, exhibitors and vendors to be a part of PULP ARK 2012!  Email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net or call 870-834-4022 for more information and remember to check out http://www.prosepulp.com/#!pulp-ark for regular updates!

The Rusty Hevelin Service Award
Each year, PulpFest recognizes the efforts and ongoing involvement of one person in the improvement, elevation, and continuance of keeping the pulps alive and well for this generation and future generations. In the past, this person, elected by his or her peers, was presented with a framed art print known as The Munsey Award (pictured at left).

As a result of the recent death of one of the organizers and stalwarts of the hobby, PulpFest has decided that henceforth the Munsey will be called The Rusty Hevelin Service Award,  or, in short, The Rusty. Hopefully, this will be accepted as a tribute to a man who was influential in making  PulpFest and its predecessors as successful as they are today.

The first annual Rusty Hevelin Service Award will be presented at PulpFest 2012. Nominations for the award are now being accepted. All members of the pulp community, whether they plan to attend PulpFest 2012 or not, are welcome to nominate a deserving person for this year’s Rusty.

David Saunders, the son of the legendary pulp artist Norman Saunders, has created a limited-edition print to serve as The Rusty. David’s work, pictured above, is a refreshing homage to classic pulp art that honors the entire pulp community and their common love of the purple prose of the bloody pulps.

If you have someone in mind that you feel worthy to receive this year’s Rusty, please let us know. All members of the pulp community, excepting past winners of the Munsey or Lamont awards, are eligible for this prestigious prize. Please send the person’s name and a brief paragraph describing why you feel that person should be honored to Mike Chomko, 2217 W. Fairview Street, Allentown, PA 18104-6542 or to mike@pulpfest.com. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2012. The recipient of the Rusty will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of recognized experts in the field of pulp literature. The award will be presented on Saturday evening, August 11th during the convention’s evening programming.

Age of Aces
Now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. But America has it’s own unnatural secret weapon: Captain Philip Strange.

Stories include:
“Cocardes of Courage” – Flying Aces, September 1931
“The Drome of Dread” – Flying Aces, November 1931
“The Red Demon” – Flying Aces, July 1932
“Scourge of the Skies” – Flying Aces, November 1932
“Vengeance of V-99” – Flying Aces, February 1933
“The Unholy Horror” – Flying Aces, July 1933
Plus:
“Donald E. Keyhoe and the Brain-Devil of G-2″ by Sidney H. Bradd
A Bibliography of all Philip Strange’s Adventures
An exciting book design by Chris Kalb.

ILLUSIONS OF IMMORTALITY by Edmond Haraucourt
adapted by Brian Stableford

Edmond Haraucourt (1856-1941) was amongst the pioneers of French scientific romance influenced by H. G. Wells, easily ranking alongside the better-known Maurice Renard and J.-H. Rosny Aîné.

In this collection of nine ground-breaking science fiction stories, published beween 1888 and 1919, he describes the rise of the Antichrist, the cataclysmic consequences of the discovery of an immortality serum, a journey across the ruins of Paris in the Year 6983, the fall of the Moon upon the Earth, the last of the Great Wars that ends all life on Earth, and even a fututistic "Planet of the Apes" where evolved gorillas wonder, "Are Apes descended from Humans?"

CITY by Jean-Marc & Randy Lofficier
Inspired by a novel from Joël Houssin

A sci-fi thriller based on a classic French novel, evocative of Bladerunner and Mad Max.

US$15.95 / GBP £9.99
5x8 trade paperback, 176 pages

My name is Judith Lee. I am a teacher of the deaf and dumb. I teach them by what is called the oral system-that is, the lip-reading system. I must have a special sort of knack in that direction, because I do not remember a time when, by merely watching people speaking at a distance, no matter at what distance if I could see them clearly, I did not know what they were saying. This knack of mine is almost equivalent to another sense. It has led me into the most singular situations, and it has been the cause of many really extraordinary adventures...

There were several notable women detectives in 19th century popular literature, such as Baroness Orczy's Lady Molly and George R. Sims' Dorcas Dene, but Richard Marsh's Judith Lee is unique and amongst the best.

Her stories are forgotten classics of mystery fiction. Like his illustrious model, Arthur Conan Doyle, Richard Marsh relied on strongly-plotted yarns and a memorable hero: a lip-reading young woman with the busybody nature of a Miss Marple and the jujitsu knowledge of a Sherlock Holmes, facing a variety of dastardly devils, damsels in distress, cads and shady sportsmen.

The Judith Lee stories were published to great acclaim in The Strand Magazine starting in 1911 and were first collected in book form in 1912. Their creator, Richard Marsh (1857-1915), was a British author best remembered for his 1897 supernatural thriller The Beetle. He was still writing Judith Lee stories when he passed away, and his widow issued a final collection in 1916. This omnibus volume includes both collections, as well as a never reprinted story from 1916.

Black Coat Press: THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU by William Patrick Maynard
Coming April 2nd!
Michael Knox is the brash and arrogant assistant of renowned archaeologist Dr. Spiridon Simos. A chance encounter with a beautiful Egyptian woman at Dr. Simos' wedding in Corfu leads the young man on a whirlwind journey to Cairo where he barely survives the terrifying reincarnation of the ancient Pharaoh Khunum-Khufu.

A chain of events quickly unfold that embroils Knox with obsessive British agent, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and his pursuit of the master criminal, Dr. Fu Manchu. Slowly, the young man begins to piece together the threat posed to the world as Fu Manchu and his seductive, but sadistic daughter Koreani tear the dread secret society, the Si-Fan, apart.

Before Michael Knox can act on the intelligence in his possession, he must first survive death in a myriad of strange guises from a savage gorilla trained to crush a man's spine to the unrelenting pursuit of Margarita, the disarming dwarf assassin who brings terror to the Orient Express, to one thousand poisonous butterflies unleashed at the Munich Conference as Europe teeters on the brink of a Second World War.

As madness sweeps the globe, one hedonistic young man must examine his own life as he realizes the world's future hangs in the balance. The action moves swiftly from Greece to Egypt to Africa to Europe in a breathtaking battle of ideologies as Sax Rohmer's infamous creation seeks to realize THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU...

The hardcover edition features a foreword by the great Will Murray and a back cover illustration by the legendary Mike Vosburg and fifteen b&w interior illustrations by Michael McQuary, plus a bonus epilogue, "Intermezzo" that moves back and forth through the series from Nayland Smith's perspective. Both the hardcover and trade paperback are once again blessed with gorgeous cover art from Christine Clavel.

Thanks to William Patrick Maynard for the dust jacket scan!

WINGS OF WAR by Lt. Scott Morgan
Now available!

Our latest title, Wings of War, collecting the first two novel-length adventures of John Masters, The Lone Eagle, is now available for purchase.  Visit our Wings of War listings page to learn more or order your copy today.

Pilot extraordinaire John Masters was an ace operative of the U.S. Secret Service when war broke out. So it was only natural that when the first squadron of Yank flyers went to France to strafe the Boche, Masters went too, only operating undercover.

Masters became the Lone Eagle of the Skies, displaying an indomitable courage and dynamic driving power to push any secret mission to a successful conclusion; a fighting ace whose dark and inscrutable movements became the scourge of all enemy powers.

Suspected by many, some men feared him, some men hated him. The alluring but deadly female German spy R-47 may have loved him. Masters became that mysterious Nemesis of the Western Front known only as The Lone Eagle!

Author: F.E. Rechnitzer writing as Lt. Scott Morgan
Genre: Adventure/Air War
ISBN: 978 -1-884449-20-8
Price: Trade paperback / 188 pages / Price: $19.95 US

"John Masters blasts his way across the skies in the kind of aerial action that will thrill modern readers as much as it did the pulp readers of the '30s. The Lone Eagle is a hero for the ages!"
Bill Crider, contributing author to the Nick Carter and Stone: M.I.A. Hunter series

"In the 1930s, the Lone Eagle set the bar for realistic action adventure with a tough guy loner able to survive against all comers. John Masters blazed a bullet-strewn path that series heroes of the 1970s and 1980s were hard pressed to follow."
Mel Odom, contributing author to the SuperBolan, Stonyman and Executioner series

"Combat ace John Masters was one of the most realistic air heroes of the pulp era. It's about damn time these bullet-torn tales were reprinted!"
Will Murray, contributing author to the Destroyer series

"Great fun!"
Stephen Mertz, contributing author to the Executioner, Tunnel Rats and Cody's Army series

Fading Shadows

DOUBLE DANGER TALES #64 features two pulp crime mysteries by Tom Johnson in a 4 x 7 paperback:
Murder Town and The Legend.
Until these start selling, the series is being published in a limited run. $7.95, plus $2.25 postage (in the U.S.).
For this initial run, book and postage is $10.00.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in 2012!

February 2012
THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake
Cover art by Gregory Manchess

The year is 1977, and America is finally getting over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life...

April 2012
BLOOD ON THE MINK by Robert Silverberg

Cover art by Michael Koelsch

Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to unravel...

Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years.

May 2012
69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block

Cover art by Robert McGinnis

69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman.

It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite.

From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it.

STRANGE EMBRACE:
They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might.

It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life!

Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation.

June 2012!
FALSE NEGATIVE by Joseph Koenig
Cover art by Glen Orbik

JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!

Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave...

First publication ever!

ILLUSTRATION MAGAZINE #36
Now available and arriving in comic shops February 8!

John Berkey, science fiction artist extraordinaire, is the cover feature this issue. His movie posters for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Wars, King Kong (remake), Towering Inferno, Superman III and more are icons of the period. He also created countless gorgeous covers for SF paperbacks, specializing in "hard" science fiction with amazingly real-looking space stations, starships and planets. And he had a long career in advertising and commercial art, all chronicled here in a well-illustrated feature. Rose O'Neill feature here is worth the price of admission all by itself. The reproductions here, from her rare "monsters" series, from fantasy illustrations and illustrated books, not to mention some fine Kewpies pieces, are just a delight. Rose has long been button-holed as the Kewpie creator, but she offers far more in provocative and highly detailed art in both line and color. Don't miss this rare glimpse of a long under-served illustrator. Plus excellent new book reviews and exhibit news.

Arriving in bookstores February 7!

This adaptation will not only give readers an amazing novelization of the upcoming John Carter film, but also the original text of A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The movie John Carter tells the story of a war-weary former military captain during the Civil War, who is inexplicably transported to Mars. He quickly (and reluctantly) becomes embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet. The adaptation, written by Stuart Moore, wonderfully brings the movie's otherworldly action and adventure to the page, while keeping the themes of family, planetary survival, and loyalty at heart.

Queen of the Gangsters: Volume 1: Broadwalk Empire
Stories by Margie Harris
Introduction by David Bischoff

Margie Harris was the first woman hardboiled crime fiction writer in history. She wrote some of the toughest, roughest, most remorseless stories to be found in ’30s gangster pulps like Gangland Stories, Racketeer Stories and Mobs. Her avid readers questioned whether she could even be a woman. Who is this “Margie Harris”? they wondered aloud. Who is this frail who cracks wise from the inside?

I’m “just another twist,” she told them—a woman of mystery then—a woman of mystery now. She palled around with the death-row doomed and the Chicago underworld. She may have been a newswoman; may have worked in the law. One point was not in doubt. She slammed her typewriter like a machine gun, mowing down good guys and bad guys alike; shooting them, knifing them, blowing them up—lacing her prose with metaphysical commentary on the destinations of their damned souls.

Tough. Rough. Hardboiled. Through the explosive stories of Margie Harris we savor the meeting of fist and flesh, the clatter of machine guns, the stench of gas fumes from sleek Packards barreling down city streets, the bitterness of bootleg hooch, the glory of sin. A violent symphony of hot jazz.

In an age when gangsters were royalty, Margie Harris was their queen.

This inaugural anthology of her work collects eight explosive stories, an introduction by David Bischoff, and a bio of Margie Harris.

David Bischoff is a New York Times bestselling  author, editor and script writer whose credits include the classic fantasy series, The Gaming Magi, and work on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He teaches in an MFA program at Seton Hill University.

Planetary Stories - Issue #24 is now available!
Planetary Stories has developed a reputation for change, but this time it is MAJOR change - and that should be plural.

But first, this issue. Number 24 introduces some new authors and artists, all full of talent. Mark Fewell and Graham Jacobson do some great Space Opera from different slants; Michael McQuown introduces what we hope will become a new series.

We also have well-established authors like I A Watson (who gives us a look at his own version of the Robin Hood character) while Bill Craig brings us an action-packed Western and Erwin K Roberts adds another thrilling chapter to his WWII stories about Cody. Rick Brooks (who has been with us since our first issue, seven years ago) brings more Space Opera of the quality we have learned to expect from him.

A new artists, Jim Gullet, is introduced and we welcome back one of our popular artists, Jim Garrison. We also have art from Jose Sanchez, Kevin Duncan, Rob Davis, Pedro Cruz, and the always-reliable Mark Fults.

Changes
For one thing, you can click Planetary Stories OR Pulp Spirit individually! They are each in PDF form, so www.planetarystories.com/PlanetaryStories24.pdf will bring up PS24 alone, and www.planetarystories.com/PulpSpirit14.pdf gives access to the latest issue of Pulp Spirit. Lacking our usual pulp background color, other than in jpegs.

We've modified the overall layout so you can get the entire PDF of each issue or, to enable access to specified stories or other items, you can go to www.planetarystories.com/PS24.htm  or www.planetarystories.com/spirit14.htm to get to a clickable Table of Contents for each magazine.

We'd appreciate feedback on these changes, thanx.

Pro Se Productions: THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT
Now available!
Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announces today the release of the first collection from its PULP OBSCURA line.  Pro Se, in conjunction with Altus Press, noted Publisher of Pulp reprints as well as the home of Will Murray’s new Doc Savage novels, developed the PULP OBSCURA line to spotlight characters from the classic days of Pulp Fiction that are considered unknown or rare in the modern era.

“This concept,” stated Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se, “is really the brainchild of Altus Press’ founder and publisher, Matt Moring.  He saw the potential in many of the characters he plans to reprint the original adventures of via Altus Press to be used in new stories by modern day writers.  The characters he and I discussed are in the Public Domain and therefore free writers to tackle and publishers to print.  Out of that rose PULP OBSCURA, a name I’d come up with a year or so ago out of my own thoughts of one day focusing on rare characters that most people, even the hardcore Pulp fans, don’t know exist.”

The first PULP OBSCURA volume is THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT.   The title character originally appeared in FLYING ACES Magazine in the 1930s and was written by Donald E. Keyhoe, an author known later in his career for his writing on UFOs.   Appearing in numerous tales into the 1940s, Knight was considered a flying detective type, an agent of the government who used the cover of millionaire flyboy to investigate plots, usually those involving things such as lost valleys or other oddities, against America.

As stated on the book itself-From the past flies new tales of one of Pulp’s forgotten heroes!  Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press presents the first volume in its PULP OBSCURA line!  Bringing adventures and heroes lost in yesterday blazing to life in new pulp tales today!  Six high flying, wild and weird adventures from I.A. Watson, Barry Reese, Frank Schildiner, Joshua Reynolds, Terry Alexander, and Adam Lance Garcia!
Come fly with this hero of the airways as he battles threats to America from the common to the extraordinary! The first new stories since 1942!

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is available now from Pro Se Press as a Kick Off Special for PULP OBSCURA.  Altus Press’ volume which this New Pulp book is a companion to, THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT, VOLUME ONE, will be out within days.  In the future, Hancock explained, Altus’ reprint volume and Pro Se’s New Pulp companion volume will be released on the same day.  “We did this,” Hancock said, “as a special gift to those who have been following the development of PULP OBSCURA and readers eager to see what we’re doing.  There’s been a lot of buzz about this project, which we all greatly appreciate, and we wanted to reward that.”

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT features a spectacular cover by Mike Fyles and the cover design work of Sean Ali.  Interior Format and Design is the work of Matt Moring and the ebook design is by Russ Anderson.  THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT is now available at Amazon and via Pro Se’s Createspace store at https://www.createspace.com/3783368, $12.00 in print.  It is also available for $2.99 for the Kindle on Amazon, the Nook on Barnes & Noble, and in various formats at www.smashwords.com.

Pro Se Productions: TALES OF THE VAGABOND BARDS by Nancy Hansen
Now available!
Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, announced its latest release today!  A three story collection entitled ‘Tales of the Vagabond Bards’ written by Nancy Hansen is now available.   Hansen, a prolific author in Pulp Fantasy, follows up her first novel, “Fortune’s Pawn” with this trio of tales set in the same world as the novel, but looking at events through a different set of eyes.

According to Pro Se, “In a time of upheaval, where magick and religion often collide, those who keep the old ways are increasingly shunned and ridiculed. The Vagabond Bards, a dedicated group of musicians, singers, actors, poets, and teachers of the unwritten oral folklore of the Terran Worlds, are finding themselves coming under pressure to disband or face probable imprisonment—even death. For generations these roving men and women have spread throughout the population, dedicating their lives to educating and assisting their fellow Humans while recording and preserving their knowledge and experiences, making sure the tales of the past are kept alive throughout the mostly illiterate masses. Sworn to Understand, Love, and Keep the Truth, they now face strong opposition from the upstart religion of Helios the Sun God, whose belief is sweeping the countryside, rewriting history and changing views of the past in the most alarming manner. These are the tales of those heroic troubadours, who fight for justice not with weapons, but with words.”

This exciting collection of fantasy fiction from one of New Pulp’s brightest stars in the genre not only debuts a whole new cast of characters and tales from Hansen, but is also the first volume in Pro Se’s latest author focused imprint-Hansen’s Way!

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Tarzan Swings Again in Louisiana - New Documentary on first Tarzan Movie!
New film documents Louisiana’s first blockbuster production, 1918’s “Tarzan of the Apes.”

In August of 1917 an eclectic band of filmmakers, actors and circus acrobats fought malaria, unbearable heat and the swamp of the Louisiana Atchafalaya River Basin to bring to the silver screen the best-selling book “Tarzan of the Apes” by Edgar Rice Burroughs.  It was an instant hit with audiences, considered one of the top six motion pictures of the silent era, and one of the first 10 films to earn over one million dollars at the box office.  The film was shot in Morgan City, Louisiana.

The character of Tarzan turns 100 years old this year.  In celebration of that milestone,  Bossier City’s Al Bohl and his daughter, filmmaker Allison Bohl now of Lafayette have teamed up to produce a feature-length documentary entitled, “Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.”

“My interest was first peaked when I was told many years ago that after making the movie the monkeys and apes refused to get back in the cages, so they left them,” said Bohl.  “After research, I found out that the making of the film was as amazing as the movie itself.”

Over a period of four years, Al and his daughter combed through hundreds of photos and documents and videotaped up to seventy hours of interviews and locations.  They interviewed scholars, authors, historians, fans, experts in merchandise, actors, an expert in primates, the curator of the Burroughs’ collection and the family of Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Their travels in Louisiana included Morgan City, New Orleans, Patterson and Baton Rouge.  They also gathered interviews in Los Angeles and Tarzana, California.  More footage was taped in Ohio, Kentucky and Chicago, Illinois.

Bohl said, “Besides the ape question, our documentary investigates many things such as the claims of the killing of a lion on screen, the use of African Americans as natives and the life of Edgar Rice Burroughs who many feel is the father or grandfather of American science fiction.”

In addition, the Bohls re-edited the original “Tarzan of the Apes” silent film and added an entirely new orchestral musical score written by Kermit Poling of Shreveport.

The documentary and new version of the silent Tarzan film will be premiered on April 13 and 14, 2012 in Morgan City during the first Tarzan Festival in the character’s history.  For more information on the festival contact: www.cajuncoast.com.

The Louisiana State Museum in Patterson, LA opens a year-long exhibition entitled “Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle.” It features a wide variety of Tarzan memorabilia from the last one hundred years.

“Tarzan continues to be famous on an international scale,” said Bohl, “I believe people will be absolutely amazed by the very large display of Tarzan books and merchandise in this exhibition.”  One item of note is an actual painting done by the chimpanzee that died recently who was believed to be the oldest living “Cheetah” from the Tarzan movies.
