Pulp Ark 2012 - Lifetime Achievement Award Winner announced: Howard Hopkins! The Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient for 2012 has been selected. Tommy Hancock, partner in Pro Se Productions, the sponsor of PULP ARK, the Official New Pulp Convention as well as the founder and organizer of Pulp Ark, reported to PULPED! host Ron Fortier that the selection process for the Lifetime Achievement Award, established in 2011, had been completed and a recipient named. Ten people considered to be involved in the New Pulp Movement significantly at this point were invited to participate on the Lifetime Achievement Selection Committee. Each of these Committee members were given an opportunity to nominate three people for the Award. The top three from these nominations were then placed on a ballot and the Committee voted from that ballot. The members of the Committee included, Hancock, Barry Reese, Derrick Ferguson, Ron Fortier, Bobby Nash, Art Sippo, Van Plexico, Matt Moring, Michael Brown, and Joe Gentile. To qualify for the recognition, a person must have been heavily involved in Pulp in some capacity significantly for at least ten years and had a known impact on Pulp. According to Hancock, the recipient of this year's Pulp Ark Lifetime Achievement Award is Howard Hopkins. Known for his ability to work in multiple genres as well as his absolute love for all things Pulp, Howard first came to the notice of many Pulp fans as the publisher of Golden Perils, one of the first and premier Pulp fanzines. Hopkins' publishing career involved many stories in many genres and included him working not only as a writer, but as a Pulp historian and an Editor. This award will be given posthumously as Hopkins passed away suddenly on January 12, 2012. "This recognition," Hancock acknowledged, "is well deserved. Nominated last year, Howard was the fifth highest nominated in 2011 for the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. One needs simply to look at the voluminous list of fiction as well as non fiction and editing Howard did to see that this award is the least that he is worthy of. Many of us have learned how to better our craft because of Howard. And we will continue to learn from him for years to come." The award will be given to Howard's wife, Dominique, on her husband's behalf. The Awards Ceremony will be held during Pulp Ark 2012 on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

MARVEL TALES Limited Edition Hardcover - Coming soon! Lance Thingmaker, who did a limited-edition hardcover of all 18 issues of the '30s fanzine, THE FANTASY FAN, is planning a similarly hardcover, slipcased reprint of the entire run of MARVEL TALES. MARVEL TALES was an early "semi-pro" magazine, five issues of which were edited and published by William Crawford in 1934/35. Production values were low, paper stock was cheap, and prices are high on the occasional copies of various issues that turn up on eBay and on the book search sites. MARVEL TALES #2 contains Robert E. Howard's "The Garden of Fear." MARVEL TALES #3 contains Robert Bloch's first published story, "Lilies." For a complete list of each issues' contents, see http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?24239. The publisher, who goes by the name of Lance Thingmaker, is offering the book at $40 postpaid. Lance Thingmaker maintains an eBay website at the link below, although the book has not yet been posted to the site. He accepts Paypal payments at creepycult@gmail.com, which is also the address where he can be contacted for information on other payment methods. I own a copy of the FANTASY FAN limited-edition hardcover and can attest to the quality of production of that volume. Only 100 numbered copies of the slipcased edition will be done, so time is of the essence if this appeals to you. Thanks to Robert Lichtman for the tip!

Some of the guests announced to date are: James Darren, Singer and Actor Tall, good-looking James Darren was a student of acting coach Stella Adler and made his name in the 1950s in a series of teenage-themed films. A better actor than most of his contemporary teenage heartthrobs, which is probably why he was the only actor who appeared in all three Gidget movies, Gidget (1959), Gidget Goes Hawaiian (1961) and Gidget Goes to Rome (1963). It was in 1965 that James Darren was approach to co-star in a television series, The Time Tunnel, which has since become a pop culture classic. Robert Colbert from The Time Tunnel and Maverick Robert Colbert became an enduring television icon when he got the starring leads on Maverick and The Time Tunnel, two classic televisions series that can still be seen in reruns today. Ron Ely, Doc Savage and Television’s Tarzan The 15th screen Tarzan (if you don’t count Gordon Griffith) was to have played a Tarzan impersonator in a projected Mike Henry television show, which never materialized. He had been tested 14 months earlier when Henry got the part. In 1966, Ron Ely signed to play the lead role of Tarzan (a.k.a. Lord Greystoke), in a successful television series that ran two full seasons. Already well educated and fed up with civilization, Tarzan returned to the jungle and, more-or-less assisted by chimpanzee Cheetah and orphan boy Jai, waged war against poachers and other bad guys. Guest stars included Julie Harris, Jock Mahoney, James Earl Jones, Ethel Merman, Simon Oakland and Diana Ross, among others. The series was so successful he even starred in two movies made from that series in 1970. Ely claims that he refused to use a stunt double in his vine-swinging or animal fights, and as a result he was often injured on the set. It has been noted by Tarzan fans that Ely’s physical appearance and dialogue were much more like those of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character than could be said for any other Tarzan. In 1975, Ron Ely won the sought-after role of Doc Savage for George Pal’s 1975 motion-picture of the same name. While fans of the pulp magazines don’t feel the movie lives up to the expectations of the printed page, it’s still a fun film. During the late thirties, Doc Savage and his five Amazing Adventurers are sucked into the mystery of Doc’s father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc’s father’s death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold. It was reported that a sequel had been filmed in the Lake Tahoe area simultaneously with the principal photography for the first Doc Savage movie, but the sequel was never completed because of the poor box office for that first film. George Pal, famous for The Time Machine (1960) and War of the Worlds (1953), passed away shortly after this movie was released in theaters, possibly another reason why a sequel was never completed. Pro Se Productions: PULP OBSCURA Pro Se Productions, an up and coming Publisher in the New Pulp field and known for original characters, announces today an exciting addition to its first foray into classic Pulp characters, the PULP OBSCURA line. Lester Dent's Fade Foster and and Lynn Lash to appear in new stories! As previously announced, Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus Press, the premier producer of Pulp Reprints as well as the Publisher of The Wild Adventures of Doc Savage written by Will Murray, will be producing collections of New Pulp tales based on characters that Altus is reprinting. These characters will not necessarily be the better-known Pulp characters, but rather largely unknown and forgotten heroes and villains from Pulp’s Golden Era. Although many of these characters, such as Richard Knight, the aviator hero featured in the first PULP OBSCURA volume from Pro Se, are currently in the Public Domain, Pro Se reveals today that not only will there be volumes of PULP OBSCURA involving characters requiring permission and licensing to use, but the two characters currently in question were created by possibly the best known and respected Classic Pulp Author ever. “Pro Se is absolutely proud,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions stated, “to be able to say that with the sanction of the representative of the heirs of Norma Dent, PULP OBSCURA will include collections featuring brand new tales written by modern writers of two heroes created and originally written by Lester Dent.” Later in 2012, Altus Press has plans to reprint the original stories written by Lester Dent of two of his characters, both falling into the ‘gadget detective’ category, a particular niche that Dent often wrote in and one that definitely carried over into his Doc Savage stories. These two characters, Foster Fade, the Crime Spectacularist and Lynn Lash will appear in Altus reprint editions and will also appear in anthologies of New Pulp tales featuring the characters as companion volumes to the Altus reprints. “I can’t really express,” Hancock said, “how absolutely cool it is to be able to be a part of bringing two classic Dent characters back to life in a sense. Although some Pulp Fans, particularly Dent devotees, are aware of Fade and Lash, they are largely unknown characters to many readers today. To be able to not only have their original adventures in print again with Altus Press, but to also be producing and creating brand new stories to continue where Mr. Dent left off and to bring awareness to not just these characters, but to the wonderful variety of characters that still live from the Pulp Age as well as the lesser known work of Dent himself, its simply astounding for me to even be associated with it.” Although definite dates for publishing have not been established, Hancock stated that recruiting the writers for the first two anthologies, one featuring each character, would begin immediately and would follow the same standard applied to previous PULP OBSCURA titles. Anyone interested in having the opportunity to propose a tale for either THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FOSTER FADE, THE CRIME SPECTACULARIST VOLUME ONE or THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LYNN LASH VOLUME ONE simply needs to email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net. Those interested will then, according to Hancock, be given an opportunity to make proposals in the coming days. "Thanks,” Hancock stated, “to Matt Moring from Altus Press for coming to Pro Se and wanting to bring new life to all these classic characters that have sat dormant far too long. And much appreciation to Will Murray and the Dent heirs for allowing Pro Se and the writers we’ll gather to be a part of something the man many of us consider the best Pulp creator ever started.”

Each year, PulpFest recognizes the efforts and ongoing involvement of one person in the improvement, elevation, and continuance of keeping the pulps alive and well for this generation and future generations. In the past, this person, elected by his or her peers, was presented with a framed art print known as The Munsey Award (pictured at left). As a result of the recent death of one of the organizers and stalwarts of the hobby, PulpFest has decided that henceforth the Munsey will be called The Rusty Hevelin Service Award, or, in short, The Rusty. Hopefully, this will be accepted as a tribute to a man who was influential in making PulpFest and its predecessors as successful as they are today. The first annual Rusty Hevelin Service Award will be presented at PulpFest 2012. Nominations for the award are now being accepted. All members of the pulp community, whether they plan to attend PulpFest 2012 or not, are welcome to nominate a deserving person for this year’s Rusty. David Saunders, the son of the legendary pulp artist Norman Saunders, has created a limited-edition print to serve as The Rusty. David’s work, pictured above, is a refreshing homage to classic pulp art that honors the entire pulp community and their common love of the purple prose of the bloody pulps. If you have someone in mind that you feel worthy to receive this year’s Rusty, please let us know. All members of the pulp community, excepting past winners of the Munsey or Lamont awards, are eligible for this prestigious prize. Please send the person’s name and a brief paragraph describing why you feel that person should be honored to Mike Chomko, 2217 W. Fairview Street, Allentown, PA 18104-6542 or to mike@pulpfest.com. The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2012. The recipient of the Rusty will be selected by a panel of judges consisting of recognized experts in the field of pulp literature. The award will be presented on Saturday evening, August 11th during the convention’s evening programming.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in 2012! February 2012 THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake Cover art by Gregory Manchess The year is 1977, and America is finally getting over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life... Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to unravel... Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years. May 2012 69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block Cover art by Robert McGinnis 69 BARROW STREET: Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman. It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite. From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it. STRANGE EMBRACE: They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might. It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life! Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation. June 2012! JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS! Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave... First publication ever!

Planetary Stories - Issue #24 is now available! Planetary Stories has developed a reputation for change, but this time it is MAJOR change - and that should be plural. But first, this issue. Number 24 introduces some new authors and artists, all full of talent. Mark Fewell and Graham Jacobson do some great Space Opera from different slants; Michael McQuown introduces what we hope will become a new series. We also have well-established authors like I A Watson (who gives us a look at his own version of the Robin Hood character) while Bill Craig brings us an action-packed Western and Erwin K Roberts adds another thrilling chapter to his WWII stories about Cody. Rick Brooks (who has been with us since our first issue, seven years ago) brings more Space Opera of the quality we have learned to expect from him. A new artists, Jim Gullet, is introduced and we welcome back one of our popular artists, Jim Garrison. We also have art from Jose Sanchez, Kevin Duncan, Rob Davis, Pedro Cruz, and the always-reliable Mark Fults. Changes For one thing, you can click Planetary Stories OR Pulp Spirit individually! They are each in PDF form, so www.planetarystories.com/PlanetaryStories24.pdf will bring up PS24 alone, and www.planetarystories.com/PulpSpirit14.pdf gives access to the latest issue of Pulp Spirit. Lacking our usual pulp background color, other than in jpegs. We've modified the overall layout so you can get the entire PDF of each issue or, to enable access to specified stories or other items, you can go to www.planetarystories.com/PS24.htm or www.planetarystories.com/spirit14.htm to get to a clickable Table of Contents for each magazine. We'd appreciate feedback on these changes, thanx.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

THE RED REEF by James Reasoner - Now available! Several years ago James Reasoner wrote a pulp-inspired adventure story called "The Red Reef" for the final issue of Dave Zeltserman's HARDLUCK STORIES. Since that version is no longer on-line, Reasoner has published an e-book version of the story on Amazon, and for the next three days it's absolutely free. This is a 4300 word short story, not a novel, but it's pretty good stuff. Inspired by the classic adventure stories that appeared in such pulp magazines as ARGOSY and ADVENTURE, "The Red Reef" features the colorful glamour and the gritty danger of the South Seas as a guilt-ridden ship's captain gets a last chance at redemption. Written by bestselling novelist James Reasoner (the RANCHO DIABLO and WIND RIVER series, as well as cult classic novels TEXAS WIND and DUST DEVILS), this 4300-word short story first appeared in the final issue of the legendary webzine HARDLUCK STORIES and is now available again!
