FRANK READE: ADVENTURES IN THE AGE OF INVENTION
(Writer) Paul Guinan, Anina Bennett (Art)
Paul Guinan
In this meticulously researched and fantastically pictorialized volume,
Frank Reade and his peerless progeny are brought to life in all their
globetrotting escapades with amazing electric airships, submarines,
and robots, as well as historical figures like Houdini and Geronimo.
Frank Reade did exist, but only in the pages of 19th-century dime
novels. While the authors have completely re-imagined and enriched
those tales into a family biography, they have also restored the
incredible original engravings — most of which haven’t been seen
in print in more than a century — and now present these lost pieces
of Americana alongside their own creatively realized imagery. Part
science fiction and part alternate history, Frank Reade is equally as
imaginative as the authors’ previous epic volume, Boilerplate, and presents
an even more rollicking narrative. Now available and arriving in comic shops February 1! Hardcover, 8x11, 176 pages, $24.95

Hippocampus Press - Winner of the Horror Writers Association's Specialty
Press Award for 2011! Hippocampus Press will receive the Horror Writers Association's Specialty Press Award for 2011. The award will be presented during the gala Bram Stoker Awards™ Banquet to be held this year in Salt Lake City on March 31. The annual Specialty Press Award recognizes a publisher outside the mainstream New York City publishing community that specializes in dark-themed fiction. Winners are typically "small presses" specializing in limited editions, small print runs, or the work of new and relatively unknown authors. The winner of the award is determined by a majority vote of the HWA Board of Trustees. Derrick Hussey's Hippocampus Press specializes in classic horror with an emphasis on the works of H. P. Lovecraft and other pulp writers of the 1920s and 1930s. They publish novels, collections, anthologies, non-fiction and poetry, mostly in trade editions, and they also publish the periodicals Dead Reckonings and the Lovecraft Annual. Authors published by Hippocampus include Algernon Blackwood, Ramsey Campbell, Lord Dunsany, Thomas Ligotti, H. P. Lovecraft, H. L. Mencken, A. Merritt, Adam Niswander, W. H. Pugmire, Clark Ashton Smith, Jonathan Thomas, and other authors, both classic and contemporary. Hussey started Hippocampus in 1999 with S. T. Joshi's annotated edition of Supernatural Horror in Literature by H. P. Lovecraft. In 2010, Hippocampus Press received a Nightmare Award, and their publications have also won a Black Quill Award and been nominated for two International Horror Guild Awards, the Spectrum Award, and the Bram Stoker Award. They have also published a five-volume edition of Lovecraft's essays, the "Lovecraft's Library" series (classic works which inspired Lovecraft), and the definitive two-volume biography of Lovecraft, I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. P. Lovecraft, by S. T. Joshi. |

PulpFest 2012 is very pleased to announce that award-winning science-fiction writer Mike Resnick will be its guest of honor. Winner of five Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award, Mike first became involved in science fiction through the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs. With this year being the hundredth anniversary of the start of Burroughs’ writing career, it is fitting that our guest of honor is an author who, early in his career, "wanted nothing more than to write books in the style of Edgar Rice Burroughs." A recognized authority on the works of Burroughs, Mike is currently editing, with Bob Garcia, THE WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, an anthology of mostly original stories inspired by Burroughs and his creations. It will be published by Baen Books. For further information about our special guest, please visit the PulpFest website. Over the last ten days, the PulpFest website has been updated, bringing it into line for the 2012 convention that will take place from Thursday, August 9th through Sunday, August 12th. You'll be able to register for the convention, book a room at the hotel, read about our guest of honor, look at our programming schedule, and much, much more. Please visit www.pulpfest.com and check it out. There are still some minor tasks that need to be done, largely pertaining to archiving the posts dealing with last year's event, but the site is now good to go. While you're here, PulpFest now has its own twitter account. Go to https://twitter.com/ and become one of our followers. |

Blogging Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon,
Part Seventeen – “Queen Desira” “Queen Desira” was the seventeenth installment of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between January 4 and June 14, 1942, “Queen Desira” gets off to a rollicking start with Colonel Gordon called to a meeting with the Defense Department in Washington DC. The US needs Dr. Zarkov’s ray beams for national defense (a subtle reference to the Second World War that the US had recently entered), but the radium shortage prevents the realization of the project. Flash and Zarkov convince the Defense Department to allow them to build a rocketship to return to Mongo to mine more radium. Flash tells Dale that he is going off on a secret mission, but cannot tell her where. Suspicious, Dale pays a visit to Zarkov and snoops around his house for clues. Confronting him with the truth, Zarkov admits their mission is to return to Mongo. Dale pleads with Zarkov to take her with him and he agrees to smuggle her aboard the rocketship in a trunk. 2012 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention
April 27 - 29, 2012! Well, with the start of the New Year, the clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2012 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention. This year's con will run from April 27-29 (with the con suite opening the night of April 26), and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. Last year we expanded our dealer room to 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration this year. Tables have been selling faster than ever and as of this post, we have only 16 left (all wall tables are sold out). So if you've been thinking of getting a table at this year's convention, please let us know as soon as possible! This year's theme will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs' fictional creations, Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars (and there's an AMC theater within a few hundred feet of the hotel, at which Disney's upcoming John Carter movie may hopefully still be playing the weekend of the convention). That theme will be the focus of our film programming, once again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well as our art show, program book and evening panels. Among others, our film show will feature the new documentary, "Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle," as well as a re-edit of the 1918 "Tarzan of the Apes." If you have any ERB art that you'd be willing to make available for display -- whether pulp, paperback, hardcover, comic or movie poster -- please let me know. In addition to strictly ERB art, we're looking for art for stories by competitors of ERB or inspired by ERB -- such as Otis Adelbert Kline or Jungle Stories -- or non-ERB art by artists associated with ERB, such as J. Allen St. John. And we're still looking for more ERB material for the program book, which once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books (and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline is March 15, 2012). Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from the estate of Jerry Weist. We have all of the roughly 1,800 pulps for this year's 200 lots in hand, and are in the process of photographing lots now. We'll begin posting photos on our website and Facebook page shortly. If you're planning on staying at the hotel, the deadline for booking rooms and getting the convention rate is 5:00 pm Central on April 5, 2012. You can book online at the website the hotel set up for us: http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=1112277231&key=C5665 You can also find the link on our website and Facebook page. Since hotel room nights are very important to us, as they are for all conventions (among other things, it determines our rate for function space and, even more importantly, the hotel's willingness to have us back in future years), we're trying something new this year as a small incentive -- if you stay at the hotel for the convention, we'll refund you $10 of your membership fee at the con (limit of 2 refunds per hotel room). We look forward to seeing you at the convention! E-texts on the net this week The Shadow in Review: This weeks new Shadow review is "Face of Doom" from the March 15, 1938 issue of The Shadow Magazine. Pulpgen-Online Pulps: Now with over 1000 stories online! "Death on Location" by Robert Leslie Bellem from DAN TURNER-HOLLYWOOD DETECTIVE, April, 1942 Featuring: Dan Turner A camera never lies about a murder it has recorded. But a murderer can lie, and it's up to Dan to discover who knifed the heroine of the desert pic while she was bathing in her dressing tent. "Super-Woman Stuff" by Grace G. Bostwick from ALL-STORY WEEKLY, July 5, 1919 This is the simple and unpolished story of a girl who possessed the glorious desire to be free. A love story narrated by a male hair dresser. Maimee, a regular customer, only 18, complains to "Phileep" that no one seems interested in her. She's also full of 'ideas' about 'superwoman stuff' which I'm assuming means free love and stuff. |

R.I.P. John Celardo, 93, of Graniteville, New York, a talented and skilled artist, cartoonist and comics editor whose syndicated comic strip, “Tarzan,” became popular worldwide, died January 6th in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in the European theater and attaining the rank of captain. After his military service, he lived in Castleton Corners, then eventually settled in Graniteville. He began working as an artist in the late 1930s drawing animals at the Staten Island Zoo for the National Youth Administration, which help prepare him for his subsequent career as a cartoonist. After creating sports cartoons for Street & Smith magazines, he began drawing for comic books, including a job at the Eisner-Iger shop. During the 1940s, he was an assistant art director and a major contributor to the Fiction House line, notably for WINGS COMICS. Celardo also illustrated Ki-Gor novels in JUNGLE STORIES. Over decades, he did work for a variety of publishers, including American Comics Group, DC Comics, Gold Key, Quality, Standard, St. John and Whitman. In the early 1950s, he succeeded Bob Lubbers as illustrator of the Tarzan comic strip. He began the Tarzan daily strip on January 18, 1954 and the Sunday strip on February 28, 1954, eventually drawing a total of 4350 daily strips and 724 Sunday strips. His work was then appearing in 225 newspapers in 12 different countries. Celardo continued on Tarzan until Russ Manning took it over in the 1960s, and he then succeeded Joe Kubert on Tales of the Green Beret. He drew the daily Buz Sawyer comic strip from 1983 until it was discontinued on October 7, 1989. |

Robert E Howard Days 2012 - June 8-9, 2012! Posted by Rusty Burke at the REH Forum: The Robert E. Howard Foundation, The Robert E. Howard United Press Association, and Project Pride are pleased to announce that Charles Hoffman will be the Guest of Honor for Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, June 8-9, 2012. Chuck is one of the pre-eminent essayists in Howard-dom, having kick-started serious criticism of REH with his "Conan the Existentialist" in 1974. It was due to my enormous respect for his body of work that I asked him to provide the essay in the first volume of The Best of Robert E. Howard from Del Rey. You can read more about Chuck at the Foundation and REHupa websites, and read some of his essays at his blog (which he needs to start updating again...). We're still kicking around ideas for panels and other events, so stay tuned for more news, and start making plans to be in Cross Plains in June. Opportunities to meet Chuck tend to be few and far between -- and he's definitely a guy worth meeting! Detailed information about this years Howard Days including
an event schedule are posted at the link below.

Hard Case Crime -
Coming in 2012!
February 2012 THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake Cover art by Gregory Manchess The year is 1977, and America is finally getting
over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that
was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not
aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and
veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops
in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed
People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo
Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life...
Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver
is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized
crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government
sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s
right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one
that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to
unravel...
Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years. May 2012 69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block Cover art by Robert McGinnis 69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman. It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite. From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it. STRANGE EMBRACE: They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might. It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life! Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation. June 2012! JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH
HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!
Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave... First publication ever!

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |
