SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE RETURN OF BARON GRUNER

Following the overwhelming success of the second Robert Downey Jr. film blockbuster, Airship 27 Productions is pleased to present a brand new mystery suspense novel starring the Great Detective; Sherlock Holmes – The Baron’s Revenge by Gary Lovisi.

In 1902 Sir James Damery enlisted the aid of Sherlock Holmes to prevent the daughter of an old friend from marrying a womanizing Austrian named Adelbert Gruner who was suspected of murdering his first wife.  Dr.Watson chronicled the case as “The Adventure of the Illustrious Client.”  By its conclusion, Gruner was exposed to the young lady when Holmes came into possession of an album listing his many amorous conquest.  Then a former prostitute mistress took her own revenge by throwing acid in his face and permanently disfiguring him.

Holmes believed the matter concluded. He is proven wrong when a hideous murder occurs rife with evidence indicating the Baron has returned.  Soon the Great Detective will learn he has been targeted for revenge in a cruel and sadistic fashion. Not only does the Baron wish his death but he is obsessed with causing Holmes emotional suffering.  He desires nothing less that the complete and utter destruction of the Great Detective in body and soul.

Now Gary Lovisi spins a fast paced tale of horror and intrigue that is both suspenseful and poignant, all the while remaining true to Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories.  “The Baron’s Revenge” is a thrilling sequel to a classic Holmes adventure fans will soon be applauding.

“We are thrilled to have this as both our first release of the new year and also as our first solo effort as a publisher,” Editor In Chief Ron Fortier reported.  “As of Jan. 1st, 2012 Airship 27 Productions titles will be available at the site listed below.”

It began with an uncanny encounter on busy Seventh Avenue. Two men pass each other in the street, walking along calmly one minute—struck down the next by a horrific fate.

All over Manhattan, soundless detonations cut down prince and pauper alike. No one is safe. Great buildings are reduced to ruin. Banks are demolished. The authorities stand helpless.

Only one man, Doc Savage—scientist, adventurer and superman—can penetrate the eerie enigma that threatens to bring the mightiest city on earth to its knees. But when The Alchemist decrees that the Man of Bronze must surrender unconditionally to save New York, will Doc be snuffed out next?

From the besieged canyons of New York to the rugged coast of Alaska, Doc Savage and his men race to resolve the riddle that brings grisly doom to ordinary citizens—and threatens the economic recovery of a Depression-besieged world.

Blogging Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon, Part Eighteen – “Jungles of Mongo
“Jungles of Mongo” was the eighteenth installment of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between June 21 and November 1, 1942, “Jungles of Mongo” picks up where the preceding installment, “Queen Desira” left off with the seductive Queen and a bare-chested Flash riding the local steed, a gryph through the lush jungles of Tropica with Dr. Zarkov and Dale Arden bringing up the rear. Prince Brazor, who has usurped the throne of Tropica from Desira, releases a pack of bloodwolves to hunt them down.

“BOB LARKIN: THE ILLUSTRATED MAN” WEB SITE LAUNCHES
Online Gallery of Acclaimed Artist’s Work Debuts!

BOB LARKIN has provided cover artwork for every major U.S. book-publishing house, from Ace Books and Simon & Schuster to Random House and Penguin; movie posters for Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and New Line Cinema; and comic book covers for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Warren Publishing, and now Boom! Studios. Renowned for his work as successor to legendary painter James Bama’s cover artistry for Bantam Books’ Doc Savage pulp series, Larkin’s talents have been acclaimed by colleagues and art fans around the world.

Now, those fans can find his work on display at the Web site “Bob Larkin: The Illustrated Man.” Launched on January 6, 2012 by longtime fans Scotty Phillips and Courtney Rogers, the site displays the book, comic, and magazine covers, movie posters, and toy packaging art that has inspired a generation of artists.

“Why a Bob Larkin blog?” asked Rogers. “Three reasons: First, because Bob’s prodigious amount of artistic output deserves to be collected all in one place, to enable fans and art lovers to go to one source and see an incredible amount of varied material. Second, Bob's talent is simply amazing; his work is deserving of being shared and marveled at. And third—and probably most important—because Bob is just the greatest person around and he deserves the attention and accolades.”

“THE BOB LARKIN SKETCHBOOK” DEBUTS
StarWarp Concepts Presents Legendary Artist’s First Pencil-Art Collection

He’s created some of comics’ most iconic images—a snarling Hulk raising a green-hued fist in anger, Conan the Barbarian strangling an enemy, even the disco-inspired first-issue cover for The Dazzler—and inspired some of the industry’s most popular artists.

From Doc Savage and Spider-Man to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and The Rock, from the Planet of the Apes to Babylon 5 and Star Wars, and from James Cameron’s low-budget epic Piranha II to William Shatner’s directorial turn on Star Trek V, there’s little that artist Bob Larkin hasn’t painted. But few of his fans have ever seen the incredible pencil drawings that begin these eye-catching pieces—until now.

Available exclusively from independent publishing house StarWarp Concepts, THE BOB LARKIN SKETCHBOOK is the acclaimed artist’s first collection of pencil art, featuring superheroes, wrestling stars, and pulp adventurers—including a pair of brand-new Doc Savage sketches exclusive to this volume! For more information, please visit www.StarwarpConcepts.com.

CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR BOB LARKIN
“Nothing was more inspiring to me as a young wannabe comics artist than to become like Bob Larkin and try my best to breathe life into dreams like he did.”  —Alex Ross, in The Savage Art of Bob Larkin (SQP Inc.)

“Larkin’s magazine and paperback covers are both legendary and iconic. There are few pop culture touchstones which this artist hasn’t depicted with his unique and powerful style of illustration.”  —Bud’s Art Books

“Long before Alex Ross, Bob Larkin became the first major painter to be known for superhero covers, thanks to his work on Marvel’s magazine covers.”
—ComicMix.com

“Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, if you saw Bob Larkin’s name on the cover to a magazine or comic, you simply had to have it…. This is a guy that’s never truly received the credit for being one of the best all-time cover artists.”  —Shotgun Reviews

“To try and deny the awesomeness of Bob Larkin’s art is to deny your very existence. It is impossible.”  —Marvel.com

About the Artist:
BOB LARKIN has provided cover artwork for every major U.S. book-publishing house, from Ace Books and Simon & Schuster to Random House and Penguin; movie posters for Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures, and New Line Cinema; and comic book covers for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Warren Publishing. A highly praised successor to renowned painter James Bama as cover artist for Bantam Books’ Doc Savage pulp series, Larkin’s talents have been acclaimed by colleagues and art fans around the world.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Scaled-Back DVD Set Announced with the Fan-Favorite '1st Season'
Now available!

In 2004, Universal Studios Home Entertainment released a DVD set of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - The Complete Epic Series, a 5-disc package (all double-sided DVDs) with the complete 2-season run of the show (32 episodes, including 5 double-length special episodes).

The two seasons of the program were very different from each other, with the first 21-episode run (including 3 double-length installments) being based on Earth and having Buck, Wilma, and ambuquad robot Twiki (Felix Silla, The Addams Family's "Cousin Itt" and voiced by Mel Blanc, of "Bugs Bunny" fame) getting their mission directions from Dr. Elias Huer (Tim O'Connor) and the disc-like computer carried by Twiki, Dr. Theopolis (voiced by Eric Server, B.J. and the Bear). The opening credits were narrated by William Conrad (Cannon, Jake and the Fatman, and narrator on The Fugitive).

The second season (11 episodes, with the first two of them being double-length stories) had Buck, Wilma, and Twiki relocated to deep space, on board the starship Searcher, where they were led by Admiral Asimov (Jay Garner) and joined by Dr. Goodfellow (Wilfrid Hyde-White), the alien Hawk (Thom Christopher), and "superior" robot Crichton (voiced by Jeff Davis).

This season was much less loved by fans, and likley has been most memorable for the (in)famous "off-think" scene (do a web search for that, if you're not familiar with it). Since it was relatively short, however, Universal included it in their "Complete Epic Series" DVD release 7 years ago...a collection which is still officially in print as of this writing, and lists for $26.98 SRP. However, it's become much harder to find than it used to be.

Universal has now announced that on January 24th they will release Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1, a collection of JUST the original Earth-based season with Dr. Huer, Dr. Theopolis. It also includes a galaxy of guest stars that include Pamela Hensley, Henry Silva, Roddy McDowall, Buster Crabbe, Jack Palance, Tim Robbins, Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Markie Post, James Sloyan, Peter Graves, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gary Coleman, Ray Walston, Michael Ansara, Dorothy Stratten, Morgan Brittany, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Mary Woronov, Anne Lockhart, Dennis Haysbert, Jerry Orbach, Judy Landers, Julie Newmar, and Vera Miles.

These 21 episodes running 1166 minutes come on 6 single-sided DVDs, presented in full screen video, English mono sound, and with subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The original complete series release had no bonus material, and similarly there have been no extras announced for this title, either. Cost for the Season 1 DVDs are $24.98 SRP.

Dime Novel Castle

Old King Brady's Triumph By A N.Y. Detective
This is issue #2 of Old King Brady, published in
The New York Detective Library, December 5, 1885.

Old King Brady was the first detective in dime novel fiction to appear on a regular basis; he appeared in print on average about once a month from his debut in November 1885 through mid-1894.  There are about 104 of these stories.

After a five-year absence, Old King Brady reappeared in 1899.  This time he was partnered with a youthful Harry Brady (no relation) who was known as Young King Brady.  Together the two Bradys formed a detective agency.  The Old and Young King Brady dime novel series lasted a full fourteen years, from January 1899 to December 1912, producing 726 original weekly adventures.

Old King Brady's full name is James Brady, a tall immigrant from Ireland many years ago who has been a member of the New York police force for more years than he cares to count.  Almost a mythic figure operating out of police headquarters, he has worked himself into an unusual place on the force whereby he works on only cases that interest him. He is frequently asked to investigate unusual cases. Other times adventure finds him.

His tired, weary face is handsome and clean shaven, unlike many of his detective contemporaries, who prefer beards.  He wears a long, blue coat that is tightly buttoned at the top that has innumerable pockets for carrying an array of items (as well as concealing them), and he is always seen wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Brady has several vulnerabilities, including not being able to swim and not being a very good shot with a pistol.  Notwithstanding these strikes against him, which humanize him, his chief characteristic is his bulldog tenacity.  Once he has assigned himself to a case, he will literally track a criminal down to the ends of the earth to see justice done.

Finally, Brady performs his duties like a real detective; there is an air of realism about the man.  He questions suspects, gathers clues, weighs evidence, draws conclusions until he has cornered his prey. Along the way of each tale, though, is plenty of action, enough to satisfy any dime novel detective fan.

Fading Shadows
DOUBLE DANGER TALES #64
Now available!

Compere had not been able to get Peggy away from the door leading to the stairwell, and he knew that danger lay in that direction. He increased his deadly fire, but had become a non-moving target himself. A bullet from one of the gangster’s guns clipped the little gas container on his belt, and suddenly two skull-faced apparitions appeared, one on each wrist of his hands. With a slight movement of his wrists, the gas-filled balloons were disconnected and flew from his outstretched arms with a loud hiss, each flying in opposite directions.

The appearance of the banshees was so sudden, gangsters turned their fire on the two escaping gas balloons, and Compere accounted for another four hoodlums as their guns had been diverted from him.

Unfortunately, his luck was running out. He heard a light sound from behind, a short sigh from Peggy, and then he felt the cold hard steel of the barrel of a revolver digging into his spine. A vicious voice grunted from behind, "Drop your cannons, friend, or this girl gets a bullet in the head!"

DOUBLE DANGER TALES #64 features two pulp crime mysteries by Tom Johnson in a 4 x 7 paperback:
Murder Town and The Legend.
Until these start selling, the series is being published in a limited run. $7.95, plus $2.25 postage (in the U.S.).

FRANK READE: ADVENTURES IN THE AGE OF INVENTION
(Writer) Paul Guinan, Anina Bennett (Art) Paul Guinan
Now available and arriving in comic shops February 1!

In this meticulously researched and fantastically pictorialized volume, Frank Reade and his peerless progeny are brought to life in all their globetrotting escapades with amazing electric airships, submarines, and robots, as well as historical figures like Houdini and Geronimo. Frank Reade did exist, but only in the pages of 19th-century dime novels. While the authors have completely re-imagined and enriched those tales into a family biography, they have also restored the incredible original engravings — most of which haven’t been seen in print in more than a century — and now present these lost pieces of Americana alongside their own creatively realized imagery. Part science fiction and part alternate history, Frank Reade is equally as imaginative as the authors’ previous epic volume, Boilerplate, and presents an even more rollicking narrative.

Hardcover, 8x11, 176 pages,  $24.95

They publish novels, collections, anthologies, non-fiction and poetry, mostly in trade editions, and they also publish the periodicals Dead Reckonings and the Lovecraft Annual. Authors published by Hippocampus include Algernon Blackwood, Ramsey Campbell, Lord Dunsany, Thomas Ligotti, H. P. Lovecraft, H. L. Mencken, A. Merritt, Adam Niswander, W. H. In 2010, Hippocampus Press received a Nightmare Award, and their publications have also won a Black Quill Award and been nominated for two International Horror Guild Awards, the Spectrum Award, and the Bram Stoker Award. They have also published a five-volume edition of Lovecraft's essays, the "Lovecraft's Library" series (classic works which inspired Lovecraft), and the definitive two-volume biography of Lovecraft, I Am Providence: The Life and Times of H. Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES - Now available!
The Chalice of Death

By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Three complete novels of mystery in space from Grand Master Robert Silverberg explode back into print for the first time in decades in this thrilling new Planet Stories collection! These extremely scarce tales originally appeared in the legendary Ace Double novel series, and represent a future multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author bridging the explosive, action-oriented science fiction adventures of the early pulps with more introspective themes of the new wave that swept sci-fi in the 1960s.

In The Chalice of Death, a human from the far edge of space must track down the legendary planet that birthed his race tens of thousands of years ago. For the legends hold that the long-forgotten Earth holds the Chalice of Life, and the Chalice of Life holds immortality!

In Starhaven, interplanetary fugitive Johnny Mantell flees authorities to the artificial pirate world known as Starhaven, sanctuary for the criminals and misfits of space. There he finds a new home for himself—as well as questions about his past, his future, and his very identity itself!

In Shadow on the Stars, deep space colonist Baird Ewing returns to Earth for the first time in the thousand years since his ancestors first departed, seeking aid against the aliens who seek to destroy his colony. But the weapon he finds upon the ancient Earth can save only one planet, and Ewing must choose between his two home worlds.

Seldom or never reprinted since their original appearances and with a new introduction by the author, these three novels of science fiction adventure blaze back onto the scene, revealing early masterworks of one of the genre’s most gifted and celebrated storytellers!

PulpFest 2012 is very pleased to announce that award-winning science-fiction writer Mike Resnick will be its guest of honor. Winner of five Hugo Awards and a Nebula Award, Mike first became involved in science fiction through the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs. With this year being the hundredth anniversary of the start of Burroughs’ writing career, it is fitting that our guest of honor is an author who, early in his career, "wanted nothing more than to write books in the style of Edgar Rice Burroughs."

A recognized authority on the works of Burroughs, Mike is currently editing, with Bob Garcia, THE WORLDS OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, an anthology of mostly original stories inspired by Burroughs and his creations. It will be published by Baen Books.

For further information about our special guest, please visit the PulpFest website.

Over the last ten days, the PulpFest website has been updated, bringing it into line for the 2012 convention that will take place from Thursday, August 9th through Sunday, August 12th.

You'll be able to register for the convention, book a room at the hotel, read about our guest of honor, look at our programming schedule, and much, much more. Please visit www.pulpfest.com and check it out.

There are still some minor tasks that need to be done, largely pertaining to archiving the posts dealing with last year's event, but the site is now good to go.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #5:
THE GREEN LAMA

A more unlikely multi-media success than the jade-robed Buddhist monk who fought crime under the nom de guerre of The Green Lama would be hard to imagine.

Conceived in 1939 at the behest of the editors of Munsey Publications to compete with the juggernaut that The Shadow had become in print, on radio and in film, The Green Lama was the creation of writer Kendall Foster Crossen, who was asked to think up a hero who could lure mystery-minded readers away from The Shadow’s loyal legion of followers. Inspired by a Columbia University student named Theos Casimir Barnard, who had journeyed to far-off Tibet to plumb the occult mysteries of Lamaism, Crossen concocted millionaire Jethro Dumont, who did the same.

It was an outlandish concept. While The Shadow possessed the power to cloud men’s minds after his time in the East, The Green Lama relied on other, even weirder, powers—including the ability to become radioactive and electrically shock opponents into submission! He carried a traditional scarf, which he employed to bind and befuddle opponents and possessed a knowledge of vulnerable nerve centers which he put to good use in hand-and-hand combat. Being a practicing Buddhist, it would not do to pack a pair of .45 automatics a la The Shadow!

Writing as Richard Foster, Crossen produced The Case of the Crimson Hand, which was published in the April, 1940 Double Detective under the equally colorful title, The Green Lama. That first installment raised the magazine’s circulation several notches. Amazingly, the Lama was a hit. Thirteen additional stories followed over the next four years, with provocative titles like The Case of the Hollywood Ghost and Babies for Sale. Assistants ranging from ordinary Manhattanites to a professional magician came and went with every adventure, which often involved emerging super-criminals and Fifth Column menaces.

RadioArchives.com has selected The Green Lama to be the first 2012 release in its acclaimed Will Murray Pulp Classics line of audiobooks. His first case and its sequel, Croesus of Murder, are presented in one set, voiced by the talented Michael McConnohie. Thus, the hero of a dozen different incarnations has found a new world to conquer! You’ll never encounter another hero anything like him. Om Mani Padme Hum! The Green Lama knows! Will Murray’s Audio Pulp Classics #5 The Green Lama is available now!

WALLY WOOD COMPLETE GALAXY ILLUSTRATIONS HC
(Writer) Roger Hill; (Art) Wally Wood
Coming in April!

Wally Wood's career is legendary among the annals of comic's history. He rocketed to fame working on Will Eisner's The Spirit newspaper strip and became one of the most talented artists working for EC Comics during the 1950s. Wood also became a star of EC's satire comic called Mad, which went on to even greater success as a magazine, allowing the artist to apply his amazing talents in a broader spectrum. When the comics industry fell on lean times during the mid 1950s, Wood segued into the field of science fiction pulp illustration, providing over 200 beautiful drawings and several color cover paintings for the digest magazines; particularly Galaxy. Wood left behind a legacy of great art, much of which has never been reprinted. This book will feature them all. Long time Wally Wood historian Roger Hill has spent the past twenty years pulling together the history of Wood's involvement with the pulp digests and tracking down original art for this project. Over half of the images have been pulled from the originals or from Wood's personal file copies, allowing Wood fans the finest possible reproduction!

WINGS OF WAR by Lt. Scott Morgan
Now available!

Our latest title, Wings of War, collecting the first two novel-length adventures of John Masters, The Lone Eagle, is now available for purchase.  Visit our Wings of War listings page to learn more or order your copy today.

Pilot extraordinaire John Masters was an ace operative of the U.S. Secret Service when war broke out. So it was only natural that when the first squadron of Yank flyers went to France to strafe the Boche, Masters went too, only operating undercover.

Masters became the Lone Eagle of the Skies, displaying an indomitable courage and dynamic driving power to push any secret mission to a successful conclusion; a fighting ace whose dark and inscrutable movements became the scourge of all enemy powers.

Suspected by many, some men feared him, some men hated him. The alluring but deadly female German spy R-47 may have loved him. Masters became that mysterious Nemesis of the Western Front known only as The Lone Eagle!

Author: F.E. Rechnitzer writing as Lt. Scott Morgan
Genre: Adventure/Air War
ISBN: 978 -1-884449-20-8
Price: Trade paperback / 188 pages / Price: $19.95 US

"John Masters blasts his way across the skies in the kind of aerial action that will thrill modern readers as much as it did the pulp readers of the '30s. The Lone Eagle is a hero for the ages!"
Bill Crider, contributing author to the Nick Carter and Stone: M.I.A. Hunter series

"In the 1930s, the Lone Eagle set the bar for realistic action adventure with a tough guy loner able to survive against all comers. John Masters blazed a bullet-strewn path that series heroes of the 1970s and 1980s were hard pressed to follow."
Mel Odom, contributing author to the SuperBolan, Stonyman and Executioner series

"Combat ace John Masters was one of the most realistic air heroes of the pulp era. It's about damn time these bullet-torn tales were reprinted!"
Will Murray, contributing author to the Destroyer series

"Great fun!"
Stephen Mertz, contributing author to the Executioner, Tunnel Rats and Cody's Army series

Blogging Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon, Part Seventeen – “Queen Desira”
“Queen Desira” was the seventeenth installment of Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between January 4 and June 14, 1942, “Queen Desira” gets off to a rollicking start with Colonel Gordon called to a meeting with the Defense Department in Washington DC. The US needs Dr. Zarkov’s ray beams for national defense (a subtle reference to the Second World War that the US had recently entered), but the radium shortage prevents the realization of the project. Flash and Zarkov convince the Defense Department to allow them to build a rocketship to return to Mongo to mine more radium. Flash tells Dale that he is going off on a secret mission, but cannot tell her where. Suspicious, Dale pays a visit to Zarkov and snoops around his house for clues. Confronting him with the truth, Zarkov admits their mission is to return to Mongo. Dale pleads with Zarkov to take her with him and he agrees to smuggle her aboard the rocketship in a trunk.

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER / MURANIA PRESS
Coming in February!
BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS by J. Allan Dunn

Number Two in Murania’s Classic Pulp Reprints series, featuring J. Allan Dunn’s BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS, written in 1921 and published in the legendary pulp magazine ADVENTURE. It’s the suspenseful story of nine men stranded on an island without tools, weapons, or supplies—not even so much as a watch or penknife among them. Dunn’s compelling account of their desperate struggle to survive in inhospitable surroundings enthralled ADVENTURE readers and is still regarded as the finest story of its kind. The Murania Press edition includes a new Preface by BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER editor Ed Hulse, along with an Introduction by ADVENTURE’s editor, Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, reprinted from the magazine’s “Camp-Fire” department.

BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS is priced at $19.95 and will be available through the new Murania Press web site, which will go on line soon.

Also coming soon will be the long-awaited DISTRESSED DAMSELS AND MASKED MARAUDER
.

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #31-32 - Coming in February!
The Fall/Winter issue of Ed Hulse’s magazine takes a look at the Western genre with articles on Zane Grey, his early pulp novels, and the movies made from his works; Max Brand’s novel, “The Untamed” and its 1920 film version starring Tom Mix; the making of Republic’s 1938 Lone Ranger serial; Rogers Terrill’s 1941 Writer’s Digest article on the evolution of the Western pulp story; a primer on Western pulp collecting; a chapter from Will Murray’s upcoming book on the genre; a correspondence-based look at the professional relationship of Wild West Weekly editor Ron Oliphant with his star writer, Paul S. Powers; and a survey of Doubleday’s West magazine. A reprint of “The Killer,” an offbeat, long-out-of-print Western short novel by Stewart Edward White rounds out this double-length issue.

COLD WAR HEROES by Tom Johnson
Now available!

An uppercut seared Danny’s chest. His lungs felt like they were stuffed with hot ashes. He took a wild swing and connected. Cardona’s nose collapsed with a sluggish flow of crimson, and now it was the Italian’s turn to hold on to his opponent, crowding him into a corner.

A hook drove home near Danny’s heart, and the wind shortened instantly. He tried to get up on his toes, to stay away and jab the cook off his balance. But there was no life in his reflexes now. Cardona forced his guard down and nailed him on the cheekbone. Donovan tried to clinch again, but Cardona stepped away and Danny’s knees buckled, dropping him to the mat.

The referee’s voice picked up the count, and with each stroke Danny could hear the words drumming against his ears – “You cops ain’t so tough without a gun, Donovan!”

“Get up, punk!” Cardona yelled. “I’m not through pounding on you yet. Get up and take it, damn you!”

Danny got one knee under him and one glove on the ropes, pulling himself up just before the count of ten by Calvin, the tall, broad-shouldered referee.

A top boxing novel.

Pulp goes Top Secret in this military comedy drama set in Europe during the height of the Cold War. A group of misfit MPs must confront spies and the black market while dealing with a boxing tournament on Post! Not since M*A*S*H* and Soldier In The Rain have we been treated to an inside look at military life with a touch of humor by a soldier who actually experienced it.

COLD WAR HEROES by Tom Johnson is loosely based on the author’s experience with the 202nd Military Police Company in France during the 1960s.

Frank Reade and His Steam Man of the Plains; Or, The Terror of the West By “NONAME”

The author of the stories of Frank Reade, Sr., was Harry Enton (1854-1927). His successor on the series and author of the Frank Reade, Jr. stories was Luis P. Senarens (1863-1939), who wrote all of them under the house name “Noname.”

Frank Reade, an inventor and adventurer was the creator of the Steam Man of the Plains (to distinguish it from Edward Ellis’ Steam Man of the Prairies), a steam horse, a steam team (two horses pulling a wagon), and something called a steam tally-ho (three horses pulling a wagon to carry the mail). These inventions, created in his New York home workshop, were not true robots, but mechanical figures powered by steam-driven pistons that worked the legs of the man or horse. His first adventure was called “The Steam Man of the Plains; or, The Terror of the West,” (1876) but the title was altered in later printings. After four adventures the grown up Frank retired and in 1882 turned the inventing business over to his son, Frank Reade, Jr., a true chip of the old block. Frank, Jr. continued inventing and adventuring through nearly 200 stories.

The earliest stories appeared as serials in the story paper Boys of New York, were soon reprinted in the Five Cent Wide Awake Library Awake Library and kept in print in The Frank Reade Library and Frank Reade Weekly Magazine.

Howard Lance Hopkins (1962 - 2012) R.I.P.

Howard Lance Hopkins, 50, of Old Orchard Beach, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 12, 2012, in Biddeford. He was born in Biddeford on December 12, 1961, son of Frank and Lynne Dion Hopkins. He was a graduate of Scarborough High School.

The superheroes of Howard’s youth, Doc Savage, The Avenger and The Shadow, influenced his decision to become a professional writer. For the past 24 years, Howard has written numerous books including Westerns for Hale Publications, graphic novels such as a Sherlock Holmes series and a widely known children’s series called the Nightmare Club. Most recently, he focused his energy on writing the Chloe Files, a character derived from his novel Grimm.

Howard was an avid reader of superhero comic books, including Wonder Woman, Superman and The Hulk, to name a few.

He will be remembered as a devoted, loving and very supportive husband. He will be greatly missed not only by his loving and caring wife of 22 years, Dominique Morency Hopkins, but by many, especially his nephew Steap and niece Sam, who he loved, mentored and guided as his own. Mr. Hopkins was a member of the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dominique of Old Orchard Beach,
His parents – Lynne and Frank Hopkins
His sister – Robyn Hopkins
His in laws – Madeleine and Victor Morency and Marianne and Michael Fleischm
His goddaughter – Renee Whitehouse
Several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews and Cousins

As long-time pulp fans know, Howard published the fanzine GOLDEN PERILS and authored a book on The Avenger, THE GREY NEMESIS.
GOLDEN PERILS ran for 20 print issues from 1985 to 1992 and was later revived as an e-zine for another 20 issues.

More recently, Howard was employed by Moonstone Books where he wrote stories for their pulp anthologies (THE SPIDER CHRONICLES, THE GREEN HORNET CHRONICLES, THE GREEN HORNET CASEFILES) and served as editor for THE AVENGER CHRONICLES and THE JUSTICE INC. FILES as well as contributing stories to these volumes. Howard also wrote 33 westerns in hardcover and trade paperback
as Lance Howard, horror novels, and a paranormal adventure series, The Chloe Files, based on a character derived from his novel GRIMM.

Howard had many irons in the fire and fortunately for us, the future will bring numerous publications that Howard was editing and/or writing stories for.
The Lone Ranger: Vendetta by Howard Hopkins

Sherlock Holmes: The Crossovers Casebook edited by Howard Hopkins

Howard passed way too young and he will be missed.

Chuck Juzek asked to pass the following info along to the pulp fan community.
Due to a mistake by their insurance agent 6 months ago that Dominique only became aware of after Howard’s death, Howard’s life insurance had lapsed at the time of his death. As a result, in addition to everything else that his passing means to her, she’s now scrambling in order to find the funds to pay for his funeral expenses. If you have the ability, she’s accepting donations to help pay for those expenses; at her request, I’m giving her address for anyone that wishes to contribute.

KONG: King of Skull Island - New ipod / ipad app now available!
KONG: King of Skull Island and is a prequel/sequel to the original King Kong story. It's based on a print release from 2004, which was a richly illustrated coffee table book with illustrations by the well known comic and fantasy artist Joe DeVito, who along with Brad Strickland also wrote the story.

We've included many of the illustrations from that book and integrated them with the story, adding some motion graphics (only in the opening and closing for now, but part 2 will have more) and music as well.  The integration is what's unique and cannot be adequately described here. You'll just have to see it to believe it. The illustrations are really gorgeous, especially on the iPad. They actually look better there than they did in the original prints.

Coming in June!

Terrifying barbarians, cunning mages, and daring heroes run rampant through these exceptional classics of the exciting sword & sorcery genre. From Robert E. Howard to Jane Yolen, this fast-paced anthology is a chronological gathering of influential, inventive, and entertaining fantasy adventure stories. In "Tower of the Elephant," Conan takes up jewel thievery but, as is his wont, proves far better with his sword. "The Flamer Bringers" finds anti-hero Elric infiltrating a band of bloodthirsty mercenaries and outwitting a powerful sorcerer. "Become a Warrior" is the unexpected tale of a child who loses all she holds dear, only to gain unforeseen power and unlikely revenge. Further entries come from early sword & sorcery legends such as Jack Vance and Catherine Louise (who wrote as C. L.) Moore, the next wave of talents including Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock, and modern trendsetters like Karl Edward Wagner and David Drake. An original story from Michael Shea rounds out this essential anthology, which will particularly appeal to fans of action-oriented fantasy titles such as the Lord of the Rings and the Song of Fire and Ice series.

2012 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention
April 27 - 29, 2012!

Well, with the start of the New Year, the clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2012 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention.  This year's con will run from April 27-29 (with the con suite opening the night of April 26), and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL.  Last year we expanded our dealer room to 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration this year.  Tables have been selling faster than ever and as of this post, we have only 16 left (all wall tables are sold out).  So if you've been thinking of getting a table at this year's convention, please let us know as soon as possible!

This year's theme will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs' fictional creations, Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars (and there's an AMC theater within a few hundred feet of the hotel, at which Disney's upcoming John Carter movie may hopefully still be playing the weekend of the convention).  That theme will be the focus of our film programming, once again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well as our art show, program book and evening panels.  Among others, our film show will feature the new documentary, "Tarzan: Lord of the Louisiana Jungle," as well as a re-edit of the 1918 "Tarzan of the Apes."

If you have any ERB art that you'd be willing to make available for display -- whether pulp, paperback, hardcover, comic or movie poster -- please let me know.  In addition to strictly ERB art, we're looking for art for stories by competitors of ERB or inspired by ERB -- such as Otis Adelbert Kline or Jungle Stories -- or non-ERB art by artists associated with ERB, such as J. Allen St. John.  And we're still looking for more ERB material for the program book, which once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books (and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline is March 15, 2012).

Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from the estate of Jerry Weist.  We have all of the roughly 1,800 pulps for this year's 200 lots in hand, and are in the process of photographing lots now.  We'll begin posting photos on our website and Facebook page shortly.

If you're planning on staying at the hotel, the deadline for booking rooms and getting the convention rate is 5:00 pm Central on April 5, 2012.  You can book online at the website the hotel set up for us:

http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=1112277231&key=C5665

You can also find the link on our website and Facebook page.  Since hotel room nights are very important to us, as they are for all conventions (among other things, it determines our rate for function space and, even more importantly, the hotel's willingness to have us back in future years), we're trying something new this year as a small incentive -- if you stay at the hotel for the convention, we'll refund you $10 of your membership fee at the con (limit of 2 refunds per hotel room).

We look forward to seeing you at the convention!

Age of Aces
Now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. But America has it’s own unnatural secret weapon: Captain Philip Strange. A mental marvel from birth, he was so terrifyingly effective that the Allies referred to him as “The Phantom Ace of G-2.” But to the Germans he was “The Brain-Devil,” whose penetrating green eyes were both a legend and a nightmare.

Keyhoe’s Philip Strange stories ran for nine years—from 1931 through 1939—in the pages of Flying Aces magazine. This first volume in our new series contains six exciting tales of terror skies! It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

"Super-Woman Stuff" by Grace G. Bostwick from ALL-STORY WEEKLY, July 5, 1919
This is the simple and unpolished story of a girl who possessed the glorious desire to be free.  A love story narrated by a male hair dresser. Maimee, a regular customer, only 18, complains to "Phileep" that no one seems interested in her. She's also full of 'ideas' about 'superwoman stuff' which I'm assuming means free love and stuff.

For this initial run, book and postage is $10.00.

Fading Shadows is planning an anniversary issue of Echoes that should be available in June.

John Celardo (1918 - 2012) - R.I.P.
John Celardo, 93, of Graniteville, New York, a talented and skilled artist, cartoonist and comics editor whose syndicated comic strip, “Tarzan,” became popular worldwide, died January 6th in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in the European theater and attaining the rank of captain. After his military service, he lived in Castleton Corners, then eventually settled in Graniteville. He began working as an artist in the late 1930s drawing animals at the Staten Island Zoo for the National Youth Administration, which help prepare him for his subsequent career as a cartoonist.

After creating sports cartoons for Street & Smith magazines, he began drawing for comic books, including a job at the Eisner-Iger shop. During the 1940s, he was an assistant art director and a major contributor to the Fiction House line, notably for WINGS COMICS. Celardo also illustrated Ki-Gor novels in JUNGLE STORIES.
Over decades, he did work for a variety of publishers, including American Comics Group, DC Comics, Gold Key, Quality, Standard, St. John and Whitman.

In the early 1950s, he succeeded Bob Lubbers as illustrator of the Tarzan comic strip. He began the Tarzan daily strip on January 18, 1954 and the Sunday strip on February 28, 1954, eventually drawing a total of 4350 daily strips and 724 Sunday strips. His work was then appearing in 225 newspapers in 12 different countries. Celardo continued on Tarzan until Russ Manning took it over in the 1960s, and he then succeeded Joe Kubert on Tales of the Green Beret. He drew the daily Buz Sawyer comic strip from 1983 until it was discontinued on October 7, 1989.

LORD OF THE JUNGLE - Arriving in comic shops January 18!
Tarzan, the original Lord of the Jungle returns!
EXPANSION OF EDGAR RICE BURROUGH’S CLASSIC TALE!

Dynamite is proud to announce the December release of Lord of the Jungle! Dynamite's Lord of the Jungle is true to Edgar Rice Burroughs original tale, savage, violent, and uncensored for the first time in its 100 year history!  We are so proud and excited about this book, that we are offering the first FULL issue for the introductory price of just $1.00!

Based on the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure story, Tarzan of the Apes, the first of his famous series, which initially began publication in All Story Magazine in 1912.  The saga of Greystoke begins in December, written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Roberto Castro, and featuring covers by Alex Ross, Lucio Parillo, Ryan Sook, and Paul Renaud!

"Tarzan's DNA is in everything from super heroes to space epics," says writer Arvid Nelson.  "But I was surprised at how little I knew about him, because the many adaptations wander very far from the original character. His true story is so much deeper and more interesting -- that's we're trying to bring to life in Lord of the Jungle."

"To allow the series to be accessible to fans old and new, we are offering the first issue at the Introductory Price of $1.00 for the full ENTIRE 32 page comic, as well as dedicating both of the Dynamite front gate folds of the October shipping Previews Magazine to our launch," says Dynamite Entertainment President and Publisher Nick Barrucci. "Get on board for the biggest comic book launch this December!"

MERCILESS: THE RISE OF MING
Coming in April!

The iconic legend Flash Gordon made his dynamic splash back into comics with Dynamite Entertainment with Flash Gordon - Zeitgeist! Spinning off from that series is the prequel comic book series, Merciless - The Rise of Ming #1, which is written by Scott Beatty and drawn by Ron Adrian, with an incredible cover from Alex Ross and is in stores April 2012! In issue #1, Prince Ming begins his rise to dominion over the entirety of Mongo! But who (or what) was Ming before he was 'Merciless'? Find out here as the origin of one of science fiction's preeminent villains is presented in all its diabolical details! Be sure to get Merciless - The Rise of Ming #1 in April 2012!

"In most heroic fiction, we (the readers, that is) never really question why the villains do very bad things. It's always just assumed that evil is as evil does," says writer Scott Beatty. "Ming is one of the great antagonists of science fiction. In many ways, he's archetypal and the model for all intergalactic despots to follow. But he's not just Ming. Everybody knows he's Ming the MERCILESS. And he's successful at being just that. Ming has a plan. For EVERYTHING. Readers of FLASH GORDON can think of MERCILESS: THE RISE OF MING as "required reading" for the series' central conflict. It's a primer that reveals not just who Ming the Merciless is--well before he ruled all of Mongo--but just what he did to get there... and WHY he did it."

"Scott [Beatty] has taken the groundwork laid by Eric [Trautmann] and Alex [Ross] in Flash Gordon and gone back in time to tell the tale of the Rise of Ming," states Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt. "This is the direct precursor to the story in Flash Gordon and presents the definitive origin of the universe's most merciless dictator."

The Munsey is a prestigious award given each year at PulpFest to the person deemed most worthy by the majority of his or her peers.  It recognizes the efforts and ongoing involvement of the recipient in the improvement, elevation, and continuance of keeping the pulps alive and well. As a result of the recent death of one of the organizers and stalwarts of the hobby, PulpFest is announcing that henceforth the award will be called The Rusty Hevelin Service Award, or, in short, the Rusty.  Hopefully, this will be accepted as a tribute and memory to a man who was influential in making PulpFest and its predecessors as successful as they are today.
During the winter of 1912, when readers of The All-Story picked up the February issue, little did they realize that they were being introduced to an author who would quickly become one of the leading practitioners of American popular fiction. At the top of the contents page was a story entitled "Under the Moons of Mars." Although the author was listed as Norman Bean, the name was a pseudonym for Edgar Rice Burroughs. Soon to become one of the best paid authors to labor for the pulp market, Burroughs would make an indelible mark on American pop culture with the creation of Tarzan.

In August, PulpFest will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of "Under the Moons of Mars," better known by its book title A Princess of Mars and soon to be a major motion picture from Disney. For further details, please visit http://www.pulpfest.com/.

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of two of Edgar Rice Burroughs' most famous creations: Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars.
While Tarzan is the better known of the two, John Carter came first, appearing in the novel, "Under the Moons of Mars," published in the February 1912 issue of THE ALL-STORY, a pulp magazine published by the Munsey Company.

In August of this year, PulpFest will celebrate "100 Years of John Carter" with panels, presentations, and more. Please visit
www.pulpfest.com for further details. And don't forget, Disney's major motion picture, JOHN CARTER, will be premiering in movie theaters on March 9th.

Robert E Howard Days 2012 - June 8-9, 2012!

Posted by Rusty Burke at the REH Forum:
The Robert E. Howard Foundation, The Robert E. Howard United Press Association, and Project Pride are pleased to announce that Charles Hoffman will be the Guest of Honor for Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, June 8-9, 2012.

Chuck is one of the pre-eminent essayists in Howard-dom, having kick-started serious criticism of REH with his "Conan the Existentialist" in 1974. It was due to my enormous respect for his body of work that I asked him to provide the essay in the first volume of The Best of Robert E. Howard from Del Rey.

You can read more about Chuck at the Foundation and REHupa websites, and read some of his essays at his blog (which he needs to start updating again...).

We're still kicking around ideas for panels and other events, so stay tuned for more news, and start making plans to be in Cross Plains in June. Opportunities to meet Chuck tend to be few and far between -- and he's definitely a guy worth meeting!

Detailed information about this years Howard Days including an event schedule are posted at the link below.

It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

The Adventures Of A Parisian Aeronaut In The Unknown Worlds
by Alfred Driou; adapted by Brian Stableford

The Adventures Of A Parisian Aeronaut In The Unknown Worlds (1856) by Alfred Driou is a social satire in which our satellite is reached via hot air balloon. It stands out as a markedly anomalous literary item of its times, not merely for its imaginative extravagance, but also for its keen interest in technological progress. Predating Jules Verne, whose Five Weeks in a Balloon was published in 1863, Driou might be reckoned a pioneer in the popularization of science in France.

"The Adventures Of A Parisian Aeronaut is just as anomalous in the history of imaginative fiction as it is in the context of Driou's literary career; there is nothing else like it. That is partly to do with its awkward hybrid status, uneasily suspended between religious fantasy and travelogue, and between wild imagination and vulgar popularization." Brian Stableford.

NEMOVILLE
12 proto-science fiction tales by
G. Bethuys, Alfred Bonnardot, Alphonse Brown, Emma-Adele Lacerte,
Claude Manceau, René du Mesnil de Maricourt, Pierre Mille, José Mosellli,
C. Paulon, Emerich de Vattel; edited by Brian Stableford

This is a new collection of 12 French proto-science fiction tales penned between 1757 and 1924, translated and annotated by renowned science fiction writer and scholar Brian Stableford.

From a pioneering venture on the exploration of "inner space" by renowned Swiss philosopher Emerich de Vattel to visions of Paris in ruins being explored by future antiquarians; from interplanetary communication with the planet Mars to the discovery of a spaceship from Mercury, which crashed in the Antarctic, and the moving saga of the Earthmen who tried to save its alien pilot, this fifth collection provides an unparalleled view of the evolution of French scientific romances.

In the title piece, Quebec helped to make up for France's lack of female genre writers with Emma-Adèle Lacerte's 1917 sequel to Jules Verne's classic tale, Twenty Thousands Leagues Under the Sea.

“The Black Chapel” was the ninth and final installment of Sax Rohmer’s The Si-Fan Mysteries. The story was first published in Collier’s on June 2, 1917 and was later expanded to comprise Chapters 34 - 40 of the third Fu-Manchu novel, The Si-Fan Mysteries first published in 1917 by Cassell in the UK and by McBride & Nast in the US under the variant title, The Hand of Fu Manchu. The US book title marks the first time that the hyphen was dropped from the character’s name, although it was retained within the text.

It has been a long time since we've had Jim Campanella on the show. A fun time was had by all as we did more than our usual patented off topic tangents. After the show Ric went and listen to the Rick Brant recording. All you have to do is mention that the Jonny Quest is based off of it and you got my attention. Be sure and check out Jim site, his shows are very professional and entertaining.

Douglas Preston / Lincoln Child: GIDEON'S CORPSE
Arriving in book stores January 10!

A top nuclear scientist goes mad and takes an innocent family hostage at gunpoint, killing one and causing a massive standoff.  A plume of radiation above New York City leads to a warehouse where, it seems, a powerful nuclear bomb was assembled just hours before.

Sifting through the evidence, authorities determine that the unthinkable is about to happen: in ten days, a major American city will be vaporized by a terrorist attack.

Ten days. And Gideon Crew, tracking the mysterious terrorist cell from the suburbs of New York to the mountains of New Mexico, learns the end may be something worse--far worse--than mere Armageddon.

Glenn Lord (1931 - 2011)

Glenn Lord passed away on December 31, 2011. He was born on November 17, 1931 to the union of LeRoy and Lurline Lord in Pelican, LA.  Glenn served his country dutifully during the Korean War. He retired from Champion Paper. He was also famous in own right as literary agent for Robert E. Howard. He is preceded in death by his parents. Glenn is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lou Ann and son, James Lord and wife Lynn and daughter, Glenda Felkner and husband Andy. He is further survived by four grandchildren, Stephen Cupples, Alan Nabors, Danielle Smith and Ryan Smith.  Glenn was a member of Spirit Life Church of God. Reverend LeRoy Butts will officiate services and final interment will be at Rosewood Memorial Park with honors well deserved.

Glenn Lord was Robert E. Howard's number 1 fan and he tracked down and preserved most of Robert E. Howard's writings. As the Literary Agent for Howard's estate, Glenn published and put publishing deals together from the late 1950s up to the 1990s. As a collector, he owns the vast majority of everything that REH wrote. Glenn was instrumental in supplying copies of REH texts for Howard researchers and publishers like Wandering Star, Del Rey, and the Robert E. Howard Foundation to produce textually accurate writings. Howard fans unquestionably owe a great debt to Glenn Lord for his works.

Dennis McHaney published a tribute to Glenn on his 80th birthday. This handsome volume focuses on Glenn as agent, author and editor, and his ground-breaking Howard journal, The Howard Collector. This anthology contains tributes from Don Herron, Morgan Holmes, Roy Thomas, Dennis McHaney, Patrice Louinet, Fred Blosser, James Reasoner, Frank Coffman, Rusty Burke, Leo Grin, Paul Herman, Bill Cavalier, Damon Sasser, Barbara Barrett, and Rob Roehm, plus a history of The Howard Collector with index by McHaney, and five works of Howard fiction from the pages of that journal This book is available in both hardback and paperback from Lulu.com.

The REH: Two-Gun Raconteur website has posted a  week of tributes and remembrances.

The Pulp.Net has posted an interview with Glenn from Pulcon 2007 where Glenn was the Guest of Honor.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in 2012!

February 2012
THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake
Cover art by Gregory Manchess

The year is 1977, and America is finally getting over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life...

April 2012
BLOOD ON THE MINK by Robert Silverberg

Cover art by Michael Koelsch

Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to unravel...

Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years.

May 2012
69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block

Cover art by Robert McGinnis

69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman.

It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite.

From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it.

STRANGE EMBRACE:
They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might.

It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life!

Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation.

June 2012!
FALSE NEGATIVE by Joseph Koenig
Cover art by Glen Orbik

JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!

Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave...

First publication ever!

Queen of the Gangsters: Volume 1: Broadwalk Empire
Stories by Margie Harris
Introduction by David Bischoff

Margie Harris was the first woman hardboiled crime fiction writer in history. She wrote some of the toughest, roughest, most remorseless stories to be found in ’30s gangster pulps like Gangland Stories, Racketeer Stories and Mobs. Her avid readers questioned whether she could even be a woman. Who is this “Margie Harris”? they wondered aloud. Who is this frail who cracks wise from the inside?

I’m “just another twist,” she told them—a woman of mystery then—a woman of mystery now. She palled around with the death-row doomed and the Chicago underworld. She may have been a newswoman; may have worked in the law. One point was not in doubt. She slammed her typewriter like a machine gun, mowing down good guys and bad guys alike; shooting them, knifing them, blowing them up—lacing her prose with metaphysical commentary on the destinations of their damned souls.

Tough. Rough. Hardboiled. Through the explosive stories of Margie Harris we savor the meeting of fist and flesh, the clatter of machine guns, the stench of gas fumes from sleek Packards barreling down city streets, the bitterness of bootleg hooch, the glory of sin. A violent symphony of hot jazz.

In an age when gangsters were royalty, Margie Harris was their queen.

This inaugural anthology of her work collects eight explosive stories, an introduction by David Bischoff, and a bio of Margie Harris.

David Bischoff is a New York Times bestselling  author, editor and script writer whose credits include the classic fantasy series, The Gaming Magi, and work on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He teaches in an MFA program at Seton Hill University.

If She Only Had a Machine Gun: Crime Stories by Richard Credicott
Introduction by Dave Credicott
Edited by John Locke & Rob Preston

For the first time, we’re able to offer a complete pulp career in a single volume. Richard Credicott’s first story appeared in October 1929, unlucky timing indeed. Over the next few years, he struggled to make the pulp racket pay. His best work appeared in the gang pulps and ranks with the very best to be found there, wildly entertaining stories of mob mayhem and intrigue. His specialty was the molls, the tough chicks who gave the ultra-violent gangster life the touch of spice that made it all worthwhile.

This volume includes all eighteen of Richard Credicott’s stories, published from 1929-33, in MOBS, THE UNDERWORLD, RACKETEER STORIES, GANGLAND STORIES, DETECTIVE-DRAGNET, DIME DETECTIVE, and others. Included is a complete biography of Credicott’s life and writing career, offering rare insights into the ups and downs of the pulp-magazine world of the early Depression.

Until this time, there were no known living relatives of any of the gang-pulp authors. In fact, it’s exceedingly difficult to discover even the most basic information about this mostly obscure group. Therefore, it was a complete surprise and an unexpected privilege to meet Richard’s son, Dave Credicott, who enthusiastically provided an introduction to this volume, counterpointing the history with reminiscences of his father.

All of which makes this volume a unique contribution to pulp history.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.
