Hard Case Crime -
Coming in 2012!
February 2012 THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake Cover art by Gregory Manchess The year is 1977, and America is finally getting
over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that
was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian
Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless
USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five
remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army,
who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way
to bring their cause back to life...
Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver
is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized
crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends
an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man.
It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal
when the agent’s secret begins to unravel...
Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years. May 2012 69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block Cover art by Robert McGinnis 69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman. It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite. From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it. STRANGE EMBRACE: They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might. It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life! Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation. June 2012! JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH
HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!
Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave... First publication ever!

Pulp Empire - Open call for submissions! Since 2010, Pulp Empire publishing has created quarterly anthologies featuring dozens of stories by new pulp authors. The success of the recent Pirates & Swashbucklers anthology leads in to Pulp Empire’s publishing initiative for 2012: new anthologies backed by a cohesive theme! First, Pulp Empire introduces the world to Heroes of Mars. The new anthology offers writers a chance to tell tales in the world of Barsoom, the now public domain world originally created by writer Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912. Stories will tell tales from all over Burroughs’ sword and science saga. Submissions are due on December 31, 2011. Modern Pulp Heroes has a concept as straight forward as its title. The anthology will feature stories of true blue pulp heroes but placed in a modern 21st century setting. Characters don’t have to be masked, but Pulp Empire wants to see a real high adventure setting with heroes in a contemporary setting. Submissions are due on March 15, 2012. Today we also announce our third anthology, Aliens Among Us. This anthology will focus on This book will feature tales of humans in any non-future setting as they learn that aliens exist and very well walk among us. This can take the form of alien invasion scenarios, abductions, friendships or whatever an author sees their human/alien relationship to be. Submissions are due on April 30, 2012. For details on all these anthologies, please visit Pulp Empire’s submissions page. |

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

Pulp Obscura - Writers
and First Quarter Publishing Schedule Announced! Pro Se Productions, a leading Publisher in the New Pulp Movement, and Altus Press, the foremost Publisher of quality Pulp reprints and new works such as THE WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE, announced a partnership in November, and revealed today specifics to what has become known as the PULP OBSCURA Imprint. The concept behind Pulp Obscura is that Altus Press and Pro Se Press will work in conjunction to produce related products. When Altus Press publishes specially selected titles featuring rare and largely forgotten Pulp characters’ original stories, Pro Se will bring together the best writers of New Pulp today and simultaneously release a collection of newly written tales starring the same character. This stunning partnership will showcase both the classic adventures of some of pulp's lost treasures while simultaneously allowing New Pulp's finest to bring those characters back to life. “This,” Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor-in-Chief of Pro Se Productions, “is no easy task. First to provide New Pulp stories, brand new exciting adventures of rare classic Pulp Characters and to coordinate that with Altus Press. But then finding the write creators, the authors who can breathe new life into these concepts and on top of that, deciding and planning which books will come out in the coming year. It’s a heck of a task and one that has been rewarding on so many levels.” Thirteen books in the Pulp Obscura line from Pro Se have been planned. At least eight of these will be timed to release simultaneously with the reprinted adventures of the same characters as produced by Altus Press. Five more will be published by Pro Se that will feature characters Altus Press has already published the available adventures of in the past. “We are extremely proud,” Hancock stated, “to be able to announce a fantastic line up of writers for Pulp Obscura. Some of the creators involved are well known figures in the Pulp Community, others are prestigious in other genres and literary fields, and there’s even a blossoming new author or two thrown in the mix. It shows a project has great promise when you as a Publisher simply put a call out for authors who might be interested in participating and you get not only a flood of interest, but also writers who stay on through the selection process of what will be written and who will write it. Pulp Obscura could not have a better line up of creators for both their skill and their commitment.” "It's going to be great to see this new material. Interest in the series has been huge and the enthusiasm by the writers will certainly result in plenty of enjoyable reads," added Matt Moring, publisher of Altus Press. "I cannot recall such a publishing plan ever in the history of the pulp community." The writers involved in
