Age of Aces
Now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. But America has it’s own unnatural secret weapon: Captain Philip Strange. A mental marvel from birth, he was so terrifyingly effective that the Allies referred to him as “The Phantom Ace of G-2.” But to the Germans he was “The Brain-Devil,” whose penetrating green eyes were both a legend and a nightmare.

Keyhoe’s Philip Strange stories ran for nine years—from 1931 through 1939—in the pages of Flying Aces magazine. This first volume in our new series contains six exciting tales of terror skies! It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

Stories include:
“Cocardes of Courage” – Flying Aces, September 1931
“The Drome of Dread” – Flying Aces, November 1931
“The Red Demon” – Flying Aces, July 1932
“Scourge of the Skies” – Flying Aces, November 1932
“Vengeance of V-99” – Flying Aces, February 1933
“The Unholy Horror” – Flying Aces, July 1933
Plus:
“Donald E. Keyhoe and the Brain-Devil of G-2″ by Sidney H. Bradd
A Bibliography of all Philip Strange’s Adventures
An exciting book design by Chris Kalb.

ROBIN HOOD: ARROW OF JUSTICE
THE SAGA CONTINUES

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are happy to announce the release of I.A.Watson’s second book in his new retelling of the classic Robin Hood legend.

In book one of this series, “Robin Hood, King of Sherwood,” award winning author Ian Watson introduced the classic outlaw hero from British lore in a fresh and exciting new way. We learned of a carefree youth suddenly cast into the role of hero to save his people from the cruel and sadistic tyranny of Prince John, left to rule over the kingdom while his brother, Richard the Lionheart traveled to the Holy Lands to fight in the Third Crusade.

Suffering under unbearable taxation, the people suffered daily until the brash young outlaw, Robin of Loxley, at the goading of a lovely young maid, stepped forth to challenge this illegal oppression and restore true justice to the land.  In this second chapter his daring robberies of the jaded gentry have stirred the ire of the Sheriff of Nottingham and his allies. A devious plot is hatched in the guise of an archery contest to lure the daring Robin Hood within the city limits and there trap him.  Once more Ian Watson spins a tale of action and adventure steeped in rich historical lore as he relates perhaps the most reckless of the Robin’s famed exploits.  Can the King of Sherwood, aided by his loyal band of rogues, claim the prized Golden Arrow or will the walls of Nottingham become his tomb?

Robin Hood, Arrow of Justice is another rollicking grand adventure that continues this innovative and wonderful retelling of a truly classic legend loved by millions.  This volume once again spotlights a gorgeous painted cover by Pulp Factory Award Winning recipient Mike Manley, with interior illustrations and designs by Art Director Rob Davis.  Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to return to Sherwood Forest in;

Robin Hood; Arrow of Justice

This is the tenth release of 2011 for the popular pulp production outfit and their 43rd catalog title.  “It’s been a remarkable year,” said Editor Ron Fortier, “and we’re thrilled to be ending in on such a high note.”

Beb Books - Now available!

Perley Poore Sheehan wrote all types of fiction, from action-adventure, to fantasy and science fiction and from crime stoppers to romance.  Beb Books is happy to announce the publication of two of Perley Poore Sheehan’s light comedies, Phyllis of Fountain Square (from 1916) and “Upstairs” (from 1919) in one affordable volume.

In Phyllis of Fountain Square a young man desires to become a motion picture writer. Slapstick and screwball comedies were in their day and this story is aout as screwy as they come. Jay Hopkins, a clerk at a Cincinnati packing company, has written what he’s sure will be a blockbuster movie script but just before he can mail off the script pickpockets snatch away the envelope. He then accuses a pretty girl he had been watching as being part of this gang. But when she confesses is she telling the truth or having a joke on the young man. Is she leading him deeper and deeper into crime or having a wild whirl with someone she know rather more than she’ws letting on?

“Upstairs” is very much a modern Cinderella story set in an exclusive hotel in New York. The daughter on one of its steam engineers takes over the job her brother was doing before he left for the Great War. But she dreams of going upstairs, if only for an hour, to see what it like walking among High Society. A friendly bellhop offers to lend her a gown left behind by one of the tenants but her masquerade seems on the verge of falling through from the start and as she darts from room to room in the vast hotel she leaves behind a trail of chaos and broke-hearts.

74 pages,  8.5 x 11, side stapled, with all the original illustrations
(there’s only one *sigh*) for just $5 plus postage and handling.

The Curse of Capistrano from 1919 and The Further Adventures of Zorro from 1922. Both books are $5 each plus postage and handling.

Crossroad Press: ASK THE DICE by Ed Lynskey - Now available!
Over the past two decades, Tommy Mack Zane has faithfully worked as a contract killer for Watson Ogg, the Washington, D.C. crime boss. Now middle age creeping up finds Tommy Mack edgy, jaded, and weary of his grisly trade. As he contemplates retirement, he is framed for the murder of Mr. Ogg’s niece. Desperate, Tommy Mack enlists the aid of his friends, the mercurial D. Noble and burly Esquire to do battle with Mr. Ogg and his mercenary “dark suits.” A new, better life filled with his passions for poetry and jazz drives Tommy Mack to the slambang climax where a few dark secrets about his past are unearthed.

Told in spare, lean prose, Ask the Dice is a brisk, literate, and idiosyncratic noir. Mr. Lynskey’s crime novels have been praised by such luminaries as James Crumley, Ken Bruen, and Megan Abbott. Robert Wade (Wade Miller) wrote in the San DiegoUnion-Tribune: “A new wave of young writers is experimenting with the old-style thriller…among  the most promising is Ed Lynskey.”

This eBook is available in MOBI (Kindle) EPUB (Sony / Nook / iPad / Kobo) PDF (Adobe) and PRC (Mobipocket) formats.

THE DEFINITIVE FLASH GORDON AND JUNGLE JIM, VOLUME 1
By Alex Raymond
Arriving in comic shops November 30th!
IDW’s Library of American Comics is producing The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim as part of the Ultimate Alex Raymond Collection. The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim will present every Sunday by Raymond from both classic strips together for the first time, in the oversized 12” x 16” champagne edition format. The artist’s post-war modernist detective series, Rip Kirby, is currently being collected.

Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney is editing and designing the deluxe editions. “Although Flash Gordon has been previously reprinted, this—finally—is the first meticulously remastered and restored edition that prints the strip in a large size and in Raymond’s original format that includes the Jungle Jim topper. We believe this will be the definitive edition for the ages.”

Created by Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon is arguably the most famous science fiction comic strip of all time. It follows adventures of the title character and his companions—Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov—as they leave Earth to discover the source of meteors that are threatening the planet, and gets waylaid on the planet Mongo, where they battle the evil Ming the Merciless. The three Earthlings encounter one strange race after another, from the water-breathing Shark-Men of the Undersea Kingdom, to the winged Hawkmen, to the ferocious Tusk-Men.

All the while, Flash finds himself in the arms of one  beautiful woman after another—much to Dale Arden’s chagrin.

Jungle Jim was created as a strip topper for Flash Gordon, and followed the life of Jim Bradley, who fought pirates, slave traders, and assorted villains in the exotic Southeast Asia of the 1930s. This neglected Raymond classic also features Jim’s native cohort Kolu and femme fatale Lille DeVrille.
Hardcover, 176 pages, 12” x 16”,
$75.00

Dime Novel Castle
Coming December 2, 2011!
Old King Brady, The Sleuth-Hound
Published in The New York Detective Library in November 1885.

Old King Brady was the first detective in dime novel fiction to appear on a regular basis; he appeared in print on average about once a month from his debut in November 1885 through mid-1894.  There are about 104 of these stories.

After a five-year absence, Old King Brady reappeared in 1899.  This time he was partnered with a youthful Harry Brady (no relation) who was known as Young King Brady.  Together the two Bradys formed a detective agency.  The Old and Young King Brady dime novel series lasted a full fourteen years, from January 1899 to December 1912, producing 726 original weekly adventures.

Old King Brady's full name is James Brady, a tall immigrant from Ireland many years ago who has been a member of the New York police force for more years than he cares to count.  Almost a mythic figure operating out of police headquarters, he has worked himself into an unusual place on the force whereby he works on only cases that interest him. He is frequently asked to investigate unusual cases. Other times adventure finds him.

His tired, weary face is handsome and clean shaven, unlike many of his detective contemporaries, who prefer beards.  He wears a long, blue coat that is tightly buttoned at the top that has innumerable pockets for carrying an array of items (as well as concealing them), and he is always seen wearing a wide brimmed hat.

Brady has several vulnerabilities, including not being able to swim and not being a very good shot with a pistol.  Notwithstanding these strikes against him, which humanize him, his chief characteristic is his bulldog tenacity.  Once he has assigned himself to a case, he will literally track a criminal down to the ends of the earth to see justice done.

Finally, Brady performs his duties like a real detective; there is an air of realism about the man.  He questions suspects, gathers clues, weighs evidence, draws conclusions until he has cornered his prey. Along the way of each tale, though, is plenty of action, enough to satisfy any dime novel detective fan.

Gryphon Books - New books by Gary Lovisi!
Here’s a short list of some of my most recent books that I hope you’ll be interested in reading. They include fiction in various genres and some non-fiction. Copies gladly signed upon request. Great for Christmas and holiday gifts! Enjoy!

MARS NEEDS BOOKS! (Borgo / Wideside, tpb original, 2011, $20.), A new, original science fiction novel about men on Mars who have escaped the oppresive Earth world government that controls EVERYTHING. Ryan had been one of their most trusted agents until now. However Ryan knows that his mind has been tampered with and nothing is as it seems. Now he has become a reader, an obsessive paperback reader and collector, but why? And why does he read only the old hard-copy hard-boiled crime and noir paperbacks from the Last Century -- as all the men on Mars do? In a novel with aspects of Orwell's bleak 1984 and dark doses of Philip K. Dick, Ryan seeks to discover the truth behind all the lies and mind control in his world. Is it all some conjured up literary fantasy in his own guilt-twisted mind? Is he still confined in a prison cell back on Earth, reading a science fiction novel called Mars Needs Books! The men on Mars read, collect, trade and talk obsessively about the great old crime writers and the great old vintage paperbacks even as they do all they can to defy the all-controlling government Authority that seeks to crush all men by manipulation of a digital record that is created out of lies and changed by the minute. What is the truth!

Honky-Tonk Girl by Charles Beckman, Jr. with an introduction by Gary Lovisi (Borgo / Wildside, tpb, 2011, $16.) A classic hard crime and noir Jazz novel by a famed Texas Jazz musician and pulp writer. This new edition reprints the rare Falcon Books digest with the same cover art, now in a new attractive trade paperback edition for the first time in 60 years! It's a teriffic read, a stunning Jazz noir tale where Johnny Nickles and his Jazz band seek to escape criminals and corrupt pols who are killing them off one by one.

Paperback Parade #79, (Gryphon Books, digest magazine, $10) latest issue with articles on the "The Frankenstein Horror Series" classic horror paperbacks by Peter Enfantino; A checklist of Holloway House 'Black Experience' paperbacks by Dan Roberts; "Century Science Fiction" paperbacks by Jon D. Swartz; "Colossus and the Works of D.F.Jones" by Gary Lovisi, news, ads, and more!

Bad Girls Need Love Too (Krause Books, 2010, a great bargain at just $10.) is a lovely hardcover book with almost 200 of the greatest sexy and provocative paperback covers shown in full color and accompanied by the outrageous and campy blurbs and teaser text that was used to help sell these books to legions of frisky male paperback buyers in the 50s and 60s. It’s a fun, cool ride and makes a great gift book for that special someone at a special bargain price of just $10.00!

More Secret Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Ramble House, 2011, trade paperback, $16; hardcover $29.) collects three new Sherlock Holmes pastiches, two long stories that were heavily cut when published which have been restored to their original lengths and are published here for the first time in America. The book includes a new introduction about how the stories came to be written and a Historical Note at the end of each story to put them into historical perspective. This book is the all-tme Bestseller of Ramble House Books!

Also still available:
Secret Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Ramble House, 2007, trade paperback, $16; hardcover $29.) My earlier collection of three Sherlock Holmes pastiche stories, including “The Adventure of the Missing Detective” which the Mystery Writers of America nominated as Best Short Story of the year. Also contains a new introduction and an  Afterword by famed author Richard A. Lupoff.

Murder of a Bookman (Wildside Mystery Double #5, 2011, trade paperback original, $16.)
Two biblio-mystery crime novels back-to-back in this new “Double” format. Murder of A Bookman has Detective Bentley Hollow investigating the brutal murder of bookseller Brian MacDonald, who was less than honest in his professional and personal dealings, so there is no lack of suspects. Meanwhile, Hollow has problems of his own, his wife has just left him and he has been partnered on the case with a detective he loathes and who hates him. By the time he finds a solution to the crime his life will be irrevocably changed! First of a new mystery series.

Bookman is backed with The Paperback Show Murders by Robert Reginald, (cover art by Robert Maguire) where murders at an LA paperback show form the backdrop for a fun crime read. Both books feature fascinating and fun lore from the world of collectable books. You’ll get a kick out of reading both sides of this new biblio mystery Wildside  “Double”!

Driving Hell’s Highway (Wildside Mystery Double #4, 2011, trade paperback original, $16.) He had no past and no future, only the long open road ahead of him. What he would find out there he had no idea, but he knew it would be full of danger and violence. A hard-boiled surreal noir novel about a lone man driving the back roads of America and what he finds there. This novel is backed with Devil’s Plague by Michael R. Collings a fine violent murder mystery novel.

Gargoyle Nights (Wildside Double #16, 2011, trade paperback, $16.) In the last days of Oldearth’s last city the greatest wizard of mystical Shenumbra creates a monstrous gargoyle to carry out his sinister designs -- then things get out of hand. Inspired by the fantasy horrors of H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Jack Vance; a series of three previously published stories in which the dreaded gargoyle pursues it’s dark mission throughout the eons.  This novel is backed with Do The Weird Crime, Do The Weird Time by Don Webb, a stunning collection of bizarre crime stories.
Ultra-Boiled (Ramble House, 2010, trade paperback $20; hardcover $39, cover art by Joseph Cali), this first edition book collects 23 of my most intense hard crime tales from various print magazines, online sources, and adds many new, never-before published stories as well. A big, fat book full of hard, brutal, intense crime and noir stories the way they used to be written in the good old days!     ORDERING: All books are available from the publisher’s websites: Krause Books at www.krausebooks.com; Ramble House at www.ramblehouse.com and Wildside at www.wildsidebooks.com; and of course ALL are also available from Gryphon Books.

Lone Scout of Letters - Now available!
Herbert C. Klatt was a primary figure of the Lone Scouts of America movement in Texas. Not only did he contribute to Lone Scout, the organization’s official organ, he also wrote articles for a plethora of “tribe papers” and edited Lone Scout columns for regional and community newspapers.

Despite all this, Klatt is probably best known as a friend and correspondent of Texas author Robert E. Howard. Klatt’s importance in Howard’s biography has not been fully explored, but he was instrumental in the introduction of his more famous friend to the group of writers that eventually produced The Junto, including Harold Preece and Booth Mooney.

Upon his death in 1928, Klatt’s friends attempted to garner support for a memorial collection of his writings. Plans were made and printers contacted, but the attempt was never realized—-until today.

This anthology collects Klatt's letters to Tevis Clyde Smith and a sampling of his Lone Scout material. It also includes material by Robert E. Howard, Truett Vinson, and Smith.

222 pages, 6.0 wide × 9.0 tall
This anthology is available in two editions via lulu.com: hardcover for $25 and paperback for $16.

Philip José Farmer - Coming in 2012!

U.K publisher Titan Books has entered into an agreement with the
Estate of Philip Jose Farmer to bring a large selection of
Mr. Farmer's backlist titles back into print.

Significantly, many of the books which are a part of the arrangement initially were published as standalone novels, but came to be considered part of Mr. Farmer's ongoing Wold Newton Family cycle.

Now, for the very first time, these novels will be published and packaged as a formal part of a Wold Newton series.

The Other Log of Phileas Fogg
First up is Mr. Farmer's The Other Log of Phileas Fogg, a "secret history" novel revealing the hidden events behind Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days. First published in 1973, the book is considered to be one of the first examples of elder steampunk.

The Other Log of Phileas Fogg is currently scheduled for release in May 2012, and will be available at major outlets such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Editions will include trade paperback and digital (Kindle & Nook).

Time's Last Gift
Second in Titan's lineup is Mr. Farmer's Time's Last Gift, a time travel novel featuring a well known Lord of the Jungle, whose initials, TLG, happen to match the abbreviation of the book's title. First published in 1972, and revised in 1977, Time's Last Gift is one of Mr. Farmer's finest novels, and serves as a prequel to his series of books featuring the land of Khokarsa in Ancient Africa (Hadon of Ancient Opar, Flight to Opar, and the forthcoming The Song of Kwasin.)

Time's Last Gift is currently scheduled for release in June 2012, and will be available at major outlets such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Editions will include trade paperback and digital (Kindle & Nook).

Lord Tyger
Third in Titan's lineup is Mr. Farmer's Lord Tyger, considered by many to be Mr. Farmer's finest standalone novel. First published in 1970, the novel tells the tale of Ras Tyger, who is kidnapped by an insane millionare bent on recreating the famous Lord of the Jungle. Tyger is raised in a remote African valley by people he believes to be apes; heroic, and beautiful, he is master of his world. And he rules his kingdom with sex, savagery, and sublime innocence. But the laws of nature and those of man are set to collide....

Lord Tyger is currently scheduled for release in July 2012, and will be available at major outlets such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Editions will include trade paperback and digital (Kindle & Nook).

Startling Stories: Fall 2011 - Now available!

Welcome back to everyone’s favorite pulp anthology, Startling Stories! We return with this special All-Classic, All-Pulp Reprint special issue and resolve to be the “Best Damn SF Magazine in the Solar System”. Which—considering the state of our solar system—is a goal we can most definitely aspire to!

Since the advent of the modern science fiction genre in 1926 with the first issue of Hugo Gernsbach’s "Amazing Stories", there have been literally thousands of stories that have fired the imaginations of millions of readers. With a vast array of styles, themes and ideas SF and fantasy authors have explored all the myriad aspects of “life, the universe, and everything”, with varying degrees of success.

For an editor, the joy of mining this rich heritage can also be the most frustrating and difficult of tasks. What tales should be bypassed and which chosen to best entertain his readers? To best represent all that SF can accomplish? To best convey and pass on his love for the field and what it can be? Not an easy task, I can tell you. Here in Startling Stories we try to do this by showcasing some of the forgotten sci-fi practitioners of the past. Of the glorious age of Pulp Science Fiction... As well as featuring these great stories, we also have Classic Pulp Art & Pin-ups, plus 2 Golden Age Comics from "Outer Space" by the legendary Steve Ditko!

Altus Press and Pro Se Productions
New PULP OBSCURA line announced!

Two Pulp Publishers join forces to bring Fans more and more of the stories they love!  Altus Press, the foremost publisher in quality Pulp reprints as well as the Publisher of THE WILD ADVENTURES OF DOC SAVAGE and Pro Se Productions, one of the leading companies in the New Pulp Movement announce today a cooperative effort and imprint to provide even more Pulp Fiction, both classic and New, to diehard fans of Pulp or simply exciting adventure fiction!

Beginning in February, Altus Press and Pro Se Productions will work in conjunction to produce related products. When Altus Press publishes specially selected titles featuring rare and largely forgotten Pulp characters’ original stories, Pro Se will bring together the best writers of New Pulp today and simultaneously release a collection of newly written tales starring the same character. This stunning partnership will showcase both the classic adventures of some of pulp's lost treasures while simultaneously allowing New Pulp's finest to bring those characters back to life.

“For a long time, I thought there was a good opportunity to simultaneously release classic pulp reprints and a companion volume of new stories featuring that same character. These are solid, well-rounded characters who have tons of untapped potential. I'm glad to see there are plans afoot to take advantage of this and utilize two companies' joint promotions towards a common complimentary product,” notes Altus Press' Publisher Matt Moring.

This is,” said Tommy Hancock, Partner in and Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions, “an honor and privilege for both me personally and Pro Se.   Working with Matt and Altus Press to provide complimentary material to the great work he is already doing is simply a good move forward for Pro Se.  And I am such a fan of the obscure, lesser known, even totally forgotten characters of Pulp that this project is already one of my favorites and it’s just a few days old.”

Beginning with the first cooperative publication in February, Pro Se will initiate a new imprint.  PULP OBSCURA will be the title of the line and will feature a logo and other graphics highlighting the relationship between Pro Se and Altus Press.  Both companies will provide various forms of cross promotion as well for the complimentary releases.

“Pro Se,” Hancock commented, “has largely stayed out of the Public Domain market as far as New Pulp goes because many publishers are doing the better known characters and doing them well.  We’ve been looking for something different, something that makes Pro Se distinctive in this field.  PULP OBSCURA, shining the talent of writers and creators on the little or completely unknown heroes and villains of Classic Pulp, makes that distinction.”

Pro Se Press will publish a New Pulp collection each time Altus Press produces a new reprint collection that both companies consider appropriate for the PULP OBSCURA treatment.  Pro Se, with the encouragement of Altus Press, will also be exploring Altus Press’ catalog and be publishing New Pulp collections of previously published reprints that will have no future volumes.

The first PULP OBSCURA related project will be THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE written by Donald E. Keyhoe to be released from Altus Press in February. Best known for writing the adventures of Philip Strange, UFO legend Donald E. Keyhoe also wrote another long-running aerial hero for the pages of FLYING ACES: Richard Knight. This collection will include the first four stories from this series, tales that mix in elements of lost races, dinosaurs and more!

Also in February, Pro Se will simultaneously release THE NEW ADVENTURES OF RICHARD KNIGHT VOLUME ONE as the debut title in its Pulp Obscura line.   Based on the stories included in Altus Press’ volume, six writers will write Knight as he wings into all new dangers, startling mysteries, and discoveries that may very well change the world!

The writers featured in this first collection are-Terry Alexander - A member of multiple writers groups. Primarily a horror writer, Published in several anthologies from Static Movement, Open Casket Press, Living Dead Press, Knightwatch Press, May December Publications, Paper Cut Publishing, Moonstone Books and Mini Komix.

74 pages,  8.5 x 11, side stapled, with all the original illustrations (there’s only one *sigh*)
for just $5 plus postage and handling.

And don’t forget out our other recent releases

And the first two stories of Don Vega, Senor Zorro
The Curse of Capistrano from 1919 and The Further Adventures of Zorro from 1922. Both books are $5 each plus postage and handling.

Last, but hardly least, J. Allan Dunn’s  great pirate novel, Sign of the Skull.

Fight Card Series - Now available!
Mel Odom and Paul  Bishop teamup
to create and write the pulp inspired Fight Card series!

The Fight Card series began when Mel Odom released a short story on Kindle which caught the attention of Paul Bishop, a career LAPD detective, who -- like himself -- grew up on pulps, Gold Medal novels, and the idea of tough guys. They talked about the story, about their mutual loves, and wished that someone still wrote stories like that. Mel and Paul ultimately decided, much to our benefit, that they would write the stories they longed to read.

The series is set in the 1950s. Mel's character, Mickey Flynn, is a merchant marine sailor who's tough as nails.  Paul's character is Patrick Flynn, an LAPD detective on Chief Parker's infamous Hat Squad.  The brothers grew up in an orphanage in Chicago where they were taught the "sweet science" by Father Tim.  The orphanage is nicknamed Our Lady of the Glass Jaw.

Once other writers found out what they were doing, a few of them wanted on board and were granted admission to the club.
Coming up next is Eric Beetner's "Split Decision" in December.

The Fight Card covers are by Keith Birdsong

Felony Fists:  Los Angeles 1954

Patrick “Felony” Flynn has been fighting all his life. Learning the “sweet science” from Father Tim the fighting priest at St. Vincent’s, the Chicago orphanage where Pat and his older brother Mickey were raised, Pat has battled his way around the world – first with the Navy and now with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Legendary LAPD chief William Parker is on a rampage to clean up both the department and the city. His elite crew of detectives known as The Hat Squad is his blunt instrument – dedicated, honest, and fearless. Promotion from patrol to detective is Pat’s goal, but he also yearns to be one of the elite.

And his fists are going to give him the chance.

Gangster Mickey Cohen runs LA’s rackets, and murderous heavyweight Solomon King is Cohen’s key to taking over the fight game. Chief Parker wants wants Patrick “Felony” Flynn to stop him – a tall order for middleweight ship’s champion with no professional record.

Leading with his chin, and with his partner, LA’s first black detective Tombstone Jones, covering his back, Patrick Flynn and his Felony Fists are about to fight for his future, the future of the department, and the future of Los Angeles.

The Cutman:  Havana, Cuba. 1954.

Mickey Flynn is an ex-Korean War vet turned merchant marine. He was born in the ghettos of Chicago and raised in an orphanage with his younger brother, Patrick. He was one of several young men who received an education from the nuns at St. Vincent's.

But he was also taught the "sweet science" by Father Tim, a Golden Gloves boxer and retired police officer who only knew one way to bring a troubled boy to manhood. Father Tim worked with his young charges, taught them how to jab and punch and throw a hook that seemed to come out of nowhere. THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH by Ariel S. Winter
Cover art by Chuck Pyle

THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BOOK LIKE THE TWENTY-YEAR DEATH

A breathtaking first novel written in the form of three separate crime novels, each set in a different decade and penned in the style of a different giant of the mystery genre.

1931—The body found in the gutter in France led the police inspector to the dead man’s beautiful daughter—and to her hot-tempered American husband.

1941—A hardboiled private eye hired to keep a movie studio’s leading lady happy uncovers the truth behind the brutal slaying of a Hollywood starlet.

1951—A desperate man pursuing his last chance at redemption finds himself with blood on his hands and the police on his trail...

Three complete novels that, taken together, tell a single epic story, about an author whose life is shattered when violence and tragedy consume the people closest to him. It is an ingenious and emotionally powerful debut performance from literary detective and former bookseller Ariel S. Winter, one that establishes this talented newcomer as a storyteller of the highest caliber.

The history of the thriller is populated by striking supervillains—Doctor Nikola, Professor Moriarity, Fantomas, and perhaps the most diabolical of all, Doctor Fu Manchu. A variation on these evil geniuses was the Mad Scientist. And no fictional scientist was madder than the man who called himself Doctor Death.

The creation of a newspaperman and pulp writer named Harold Ward writing under the obscure pen name of Zorro, Doctor Death was the star of his own bizarre pulp magazine back in 1935. He was equal parts Doctor Frankenstein and Albert Einstein, with a dash of Fu Manchu and a dram of wormwood. In reality, a Yale psychologist with the improbable name of Rance Mandarin, Doctor Death was a scientist who wandered over to the dark side, consorting with demons, elementals, zombies, disinterred mummies, other unclean denizens of Hell.

Apparently, Mandarin practiced a strange brand of necromancy because he believed that the Almighty had commanded him to force modern man to abandon automation, quit the factories, cease inventing, and revert to a pre-industrial state. In the depths of the great Depression of the 1930s, this may have struck the American reading public as the height of horror.

A frightened nation responded to this challenge by organizing the Secret Twelve, a band of the top U. S. civil and business leaders, whose number included the President of the United States and the nation's top gang leader! It was quite a group. The heroic head of that organization was the remarkable Jimmy Holm, a millionaire criminologist and occultist who joined New York's Finest as a detective. Working under Inspector John Ricks, and sometimes allied with Mandarin's mysterious assistant, the exotic Nina Fererra, Holm battled Doctor Death from Manhattan to Egypt and into the very bowels of Hell itself.

The series is one of the rare unabashedly supernatural series the pulps ever produced. When Jimmy Holm confronts the undead minions of Doctor Death, the mummies and zombies are the real deal. The explanation for that is very simple: Harold Ward was a frequent contributor to the legendary Weird Tales magazine…and that's why Doctor Death is a classic of its type.

RadioArchives.com is resurrecting this wild and wonderful series by presenting Doctor Death's first fatal foray into reversing mankind's fortunes, 12 Must Die, in a audiobook voiced by the talented Joey D'Auria. Get yours today for $14.98 for Audio CDs and $9.98 for the Digital Download!

Robert E. Howard - Film projects in the works!
According to an exclusive interview at THE DAILY BLAM, Fredrik Malmberg says there are “no firm plans” for a sequel to CONAN THE BARBARIAN, but he still has plenty of big plans. He’s currently focusing on bringing other Robert E. Howard stories to the big screen: “A Conan sequel would be nice, but also of course, we’re working on both Kull the Conqueror  and Dark Agnes , and Vultures as of now…. We have been working a little bit on one of his stories called “Pigeons From Hell,” which is a pivotal, classic horror story that he wrote. The boxing stories, we’ve actually also been discussing some of that.”

Tarzan: His First 100 Years - Coming in 2012!
How Ancient Literature became Modern Mythology, and created an Ape-Man mecca in Southern California
by David A. Lemmo and Rachael Wenban

A centennial history of Tarzan will be appearing in 2012 to coincide with the world-wide celebrations of both the first multimedia superstar and the first super hero to appear in the 20th Century:  TARZAN: HIS FIRST 100 YEARS. How Ancient Literature became Modern Mythology, and created an Ape-Man mecca in Southern California.  The authors are David A. Lemmo and Rachael Wenban.  David is curator of the Museum of Modern Mythology and Pop Culture with over thirty years experience as an antiquarian bookseller, and a long time ERB/Tarzan fan.  Rachael is a midwife and photographer, with twelve years experience as a book seller. The publisher is Angel City Press of Santa Monica, California.

TARZAN: HIS FIRST 100 YEARS is an examination and reference work on the Ape-Man.  The authors' emphasis is on the socio-economic-scientific history of his many incarnations in the context of entertainment that became modern mythology.  The book is similar to TARZAN AND TRADITION by Erling B. Holtsmark, in that the authors examine Tarzan in the context of mythology.  However, where Holtsmark covers only the first six books, this new work includes all of the stories as part of "The Saga" (as with the labors and wanderings of Hercules, Odysseus, and King Arthur).  Holtsmark stays with ancient mythology in his juxtapositions, where TARZAN: HIS FIRST 100 YEARS includes the Ape-Man's connections to ancient myth, legends, modern literature, science, culture, and how all of these led to the concept of modern myth.

The book emphasizes the inter-genre aspect of the meme we know of as Tarzan, which enables him to adapt to the future.  That Tarzan is more than just a "jungle man" is integral to the core of the original character.  He is also a British Lord, family man, secret agent, science fiction adventurer, an RAF officer during World War II, and at times, has been a paranormal investigator.  This is a distinctly different way of presenting the character we thought we knew for a hundred years, following him into a growing 21st Century World.

Tarzan's connections to both ancient myth and modern characters greatly helped the growth and acceptance of the academic study of pop culture.  He is a "Bridge between two Pantheons," a century-old expression of the ancient mythic age.  His impact on society and cultural heritage extends beyond mere entertainment: a symbol of environmental conservation and animal rights, protector of indigenous traditional cultures, and is a world-wide example of the capacity of humans to rise above unfortunate circumstances to become rational, ethical, and dignified.

Tarzan is at the head of a line of early 20th Century archetypes (such as The Shadow and Doc Savage) that were later combined by writers to create new ones (such as Superman and Batman).  The Ape-Man pioneered (beginning in 1916) the Fandom movement that pervades our culture.  Here's a quote by iconic fantasy/science fiction author Ray Bradbury: "Edgar Rice Burroughs was and is the most influential writer, bar none, of our century."  When asked about this statement by writer Lawrence Grobel, Bradbury replied, "I have talked to astronauts, biochemists, anthropologists, astronomers---they all say Edgar Rice Burroughs."

Bradd

An exciting book design by Chris Kalb.

The Flower of Silence” was the first installment of Sax Rohmer’s The Si-Fan Mysteries. The story was first published in Collier’s on April 8, 1916 and was later expanded to comprise the first four chapters of the third Fu-Manchu novel, The Si-Fan Mysteries first published in 1917 by Cassell in the UK and by McBride & Nast in the US under the variant title, The Hand of Fu Manchu. This third serial began only four months after the second concluded. As Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA(r) Special Assignments Team rush to investigate, they find themselves drawn into the extraordinary ambitions of an African dictator, the creation of a weapon of almost mythical power, and an unimaginably audacious plan to extort the world's major nations. Old Sleuth, the Detective; or, The Bay Ridge Mystery
Originally Published June 10, 1872

Old Sleuth is a famous detective much feared by the underworld because he has an uncanny knack for finding obscure clues to unravel mysteries that have baffled the police.  A supposedly wizened old man with white, mutton chop whiskers and glasses, Old Sleuth is in reality Harry Loveland, a man presumably in his early 30s -- at least in the first story; in the subsequent tales, he is, in fact, an old man.

The creation of Harlan Page Halsey (October 23, 1837-- December 16, 1898), Old Sleuth was the first detective in dime novel fiction to be featured in a continuous series of stories; his adventures, however, were few and far between.

The first Old Sleuth story was printed in the weekly story paper, The Fireside Companion (Old Sleuth, the Detective; or, The Bay Ridge Mystery) on June 10, 1872; it concluded three months later on October 14, 1872.  Five more Old Sleuth tales followed in 1875, 1883, 1884, 1888 and 1891.  The stories were reprinted in the Old Sleuth Library in the late 1880s and some of them were reprinted elsewhere over the years to the very end of the dime novel era.

A Wall Street Haul; Or, A Bold Stroke For A Fortune
Original Nick Carter Novel #2 By John Russell Coryell
Originally Published in Street and Smith's, New York Weekly in 1899

This is the second adventure of Nick Carter created by John Russell Coryell. Nick Carter has been a private detective for a little over a year and has been very successful in his chosen vocation.  Everyone knows his  pseudonym, Harvey Jones, but no one knows the existence of his real identity except Inspector Byrnes.  Nick has married the girl he fell in love with in his first adventure, and in this tale he involves her a bit in solving the mystery of “A Wall Street Haul,” a massive amount of bonds taken from one of New York’s most famous banks –– and with precious few clues to go by.  It is necessary to read this story first because Nick Carter’s next adventure is The Sequel.

Haffner Press - Now available!
Shannach – The Last: Farewell to Mars
by Leigh Brackett

Introduction by Anne McCaffrey
Illustrated by Ed Emshwiller and Frank Kelly Freas

Picking up where Lorelei of the Red Mist: Planetary Romances left off, this volume collects the final 17 stories of strange adventures on other worlds from the undisputed "Queen of Space Opera."  Drawn from the last years of pulp magazines such as Planet Stories, Startling Stories, and Thrilling Wonder Stories, Shannach – The Last: Farewell to Mars sees Brackett at the peak of her talents.

Oddly, it is at this point where she abandons the "planetary romance" sub-genre and embarks on a small string of stories tinged with social relevance. This departure didn't stop editors asking for some of "that old Brackett magic" and she offered up two latter day tales ("The Road to Sinharat" and "Purple Priestess of the Mad Moon") before returning to chronicle further adventures of Eric John Stark in her final "Skaith" novels. Closing out the collection is a trio of tales written on commission from the "king of anthologies," Roger Elwood.

The book is adorned with Frank Kelly Freas' and Ed Emshwiller's vintage illustrations from the original  pulp magazines.

Hardcover,
582 pages, $40.00

Haffner Press - Autumn 2011 Update!
Things have been über-busy at the Secret Moon Base, but it's time for a status update on all that's happening so . . . Onward!

1) SHANNACH - THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS
We now hold copies of this brand new release and it's be-yoo-tee-full!  With Kelly Freas' vintage cover art, this is a really great looking book.  And the contents are equally awesome.  Of course, with all this "keen-ness" something went wrong.  The original dustjacket had an intolerable typo (my bad) on the spine, so we've gone ahead and printed a corrected second-state dustjacket. All copies ordered direct from Haffner Press, and select retailers, will ship with the first-state jacket wrapped to the book and shrinkwrapped, with a rolled and bagged copy of the second state jacket included.  $40 gets it to you with free shipping in the Continental USA.

2) 2011 WORLD FANTASY CONVENTION
We're also recovering from an unplanned opportunity to exhibit at the 2011 World Fantasy Convention in San Diego last week.  We arranged to have SHANNACH?THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS make it's debut, and we tried as best we could to collect autographs in the charity books, IN MEMORY OF WONDER'S CHILD and THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF THE JACK WILLIAMSON LECTURESHIP.  We think succeeded fairly well on all counts and we'll announce in a few weeks what new signatures have been added to these books.

3) ARTIST ROLL CALL
We are *extremely* pleased to announce that we have deals with the following artists for two of our 2012 releases:

THE COMPLETE JOHN THUNSTONE by Manly Wade Wellman will have cover art by Raymond Swanland.  Raymond's work is ideally suited to the supernatural horrors that John Thunstone faces in this massive collection.  We hope to have images before the end of the year.

THE MICHAEL GRAY MYSTERIES by Henry Kuttner & Catherine L. Moore, a collection of four paperback original novels from the late 50s, will feature original cover art by classic movie poster and paperback artist Robert McGinnis. Mr. McGinnis has recently been providing cover art for Hard Case Crime's line of books, and we're eager to see what he delivers for this Kuttner/Moore title.

4) THUNDER IN THE VOID
Holy cow!  As if that weren't enough, we're days away from sending THUNDER IN THE VOID, a massive collection of Space Opera stories by Henry Kuttner (including a never-before-published story, "The Interplanetary Limited") to the printer.  You can reserve your $40 copy here or, preorder it as part of one of our (in)famous "Early Bird" deals on the Haffner Press homepage.

5) HOLLYWOOD ON THE MOON / MAN ABOUT TIME: THE PETE MANX ADVENTURES
With all the other goings-on with our Henry Kuttner projects, we want to assure you all that this project to collect all the SF collaborations of Henry Kuttner and Arthur K. Barnes is going forward and we look for a release in Late February.  Details are here.

6) FREDRIC BROWN MYSTERIES
Keep Watching the Skies for news on our upcoming slate of Fredric Brown titles.  Editorial work on the first two volumes is in the home stretch and we will announce contents, pricing, and availability as soon as possible.

7) HALO FOR HIRE: THE PAUL PINE MYSTERIES
Meanwhile, we will take this opportunity to briefly announce that we have an agreement to collect all the novels and shorts featuring Chicago private eye Paul Pine from Howard Browne (sometimes writing as "John Evans".)
Contents are:
   HALO IN BLOOD
   HALO FOR SATAN
   HALO IN BRASS
   "So Dark for April"
   A TASTE OF ASHES
   "The Paper Gun"

A fine summary of the "Paul Pine" works is available on the Thrilling Detective website.
We'll have ordering information as soon as it becomes available.
Okay, fellow astrogators.  That's it for now.  We'll send another update around the Thanksgiving holiday.
Meanwhile, there are hundred of orders still to be processed for SHANNACH - THE LAST: FAREWELL TO MARS.  (Oh, my aching back!)

Keep Watching the Skies!

PLANETARY STORIES #23 / PULP SPIRIT #13 are now available online for immediate reading!
TWO features have been added. I felt they were too important to hold for Issue 24.

First, there is a report from Ahrvid Engholm about a presentation he attended at the Stockholm Technical Museum, with some great Swedish scientists in attendance plus many NASA displays. Ahrvid took many photos while he was there, and we've included many of them. (Did you know there was a Swedish astronaut who had been of TWO Discovery missions?)

In addition to that, there is a PDF action comic book attached! You've gotta see CHOPPER JANE vs UFOs - It's a First.

PLANETARY STORIES #23

PULP SPIRIT #13

Thursday, August 9th – Sunday, August 12th, 2012

The PulpFest organizing committee is delighted to announce that next year’s convention will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Columbus, Ohio—a bigger and better venue for a con that has been growing by ten percent per year since its start in 2009. PulpFest 2012 will begin on Thursday evening, August 9th, and run through Sunday, August 12th.

PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers has spent the last three months scouting hotels to find one better equipped to host our steadily growing conference. The committee investigated the possibility of moving to other cities, including Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh, before electing to remain in Columbus, from which PulpFest has drawn a substantial number of new members to our community.

Size, location, affordability, and availability are just a few of the many factors that must be taken into consideration when selecting a venue. After careful consideration, we settled on the Hyatt Regency because it not only meets our current needs but is large enough to accommodate our continued growth.

Although PulpFest enjoyed a good working relationship with the Ramada Plaza, that hotel’s shortcomings had grown to outnumber its advantages. We think the Hyatt will be a much better fit. The downtown area is ideal for out-of-town attendees lacking rental cars; the hotel sits in the middle of the active Short North Arts District and is just a few minutes’ walk from the trendy Arena District. There are shops and restaurants galore right outside the hotel’s entrance. Ohio State University is nearby, and various tourist attractions are easily accessible, offering numerous entertainment options for PulpFest members accompanied by their families.

The Hyatt Regency recently completed a $12 million refurbishment of its guest rooms, adding WiFi access, iHome Stereo with iPod docking access, and other amenities commensurate with the hotel’s size and stature. Attendees who don’t feel like going outside for meals or libations can take advantage of the Hyatt’s spacious cafe, coffee bar, and cocktail lounge. Fitness-minded members can take a break for shopping in the dealers room to enjoy the hotel’s indoor pool, spa services, and 24-hour gym.

Dealers should have an easier time loading and unloading their wares, thanks to a separate hotel entrance leading directly to a freight elevator that stops on the floor where our huckster room will be located. The Hyatt’s ballroom will easily accommodate more tables than did the Ramada Plaza’s conference center.

The many advantages afforded by our new home will result in an increase in our sleeping-room rate to $109 per night, which includes one free parking pass. However, since the Hyatt Regency is significantly more spacious and comfortable, we believe attendees will be very pleased with our choice. We’re also confident that you’ll appreciate the hotel’s proximity to a wide variety of shops, eateries, and other attractions.

In the weeks and months to come, we’ll be presenting you with more information about the Hyatt Regency and our plans for PulpFest 2012, which we are determined to make the best yet. So please be sure to revisit us frequently for the latest news!

With the ever-rising cost of pulp-related books, Tom Johnson re-launched his old Fading Shadows imprint to see if it was possible to produce a book for under $10.00. With Gail McAbee’s birthday coming up in November, Tom chose their action-packed pulp story, “Shadowhawke: First Flight” as an experiment.

This 128-page (4 x 7) paperback is the result. Printing isn’t cheap, but we’ve eliminated the middleman. With only a few copies ordered for this experimental product, Tom is offering them on a first come basis at $7.95, plus postage. This was not meant for regular sales and is not available on Amazon or in bookstores. Contact Tom at fadingshadows40@gmail.com for ordering information while they last.

Warriors of Mars - Coming in February!
Writer: Robert Napton; Art" Jack Jadson; Cover: Joe Jusko

After the incredible critical and commercial success of Dynamite's Warlord of Mars, Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris, and Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom series, comes Warriors of Mars #1!  Before John Carter another earthman visited the Red planet: Lt. Gullivar Jones.  Now these legendary warriors are brought together for the first time!  When Lt. Guillivar Jones happens upon a mysterious old man with a beautiful carpet he soon finds himself transported through space and time to the planet Mars where he meets the beautiful Princess Hera and a ferocious tribe of Red Martians bent on capturing her!  Warriors of Mars is written by Warlord of Mars: Fall of Barsoom writer Robert Napton, drawn by Jack Jadson, with covers by the legendary Joe Jusko and will hit comic stores February 2012!

"Gullivar was written first, but Carter cornered the market and became a legend," says writer Robert Napton.  "It's Gullivar Vs. John Carter-let the battle begin!  It's a thrill to bring these two southern gents together on the same stretch of red turf and let them have at it.  But it won't be all blood and guts.  There's a story to be told.  Many have heard of Gullivar of Mars, but don't know who he is and how he's a different sort of man from Carter despite being caught in the same otherworldly circumstances.  This is one mash-up fans of pulp won't want to miss."

"We've found a smart and clever way to tie these two pulp heroes together and rescue Gullivar from relative obscurity and place him up on the dais among the greats," adds Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt.  "We're going to explore more of the eras of Mars with Gullivar, the past, present and future and  Robert Napton has proven himself more than capable of spinning some excellent Barsoomian tales and we've paired him with a great new artistic find in Jack Jadson."

Princess of Mars is an Edgar Rice Burroughs science fiction novel, the first of his famous series, which initially began publication in serialized form within the pages of All-Story Magazine in February 1912. It is also Burroughs' first novel, predating his Tarzan stories. Full of swordplay and daring feats, the story is considered a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.

“Vengeance of V-99” – Flying Aces, February 1933

THE XENOBIOTIC INVASION by Théo Varlet
adapted by Brian Stableford

The Xenobiota had invaded the tracks; a vehement thrust of the extraterrestrial creation was developing aggressive battalions of lichen on the rails, a reddish-purple coating bristling with spikes, like a giant crystallization. In the vault, packets of branched stalactites were hanging from the trolley-wires and the feeder cables. Prolongations of these vegetal masses were surging forth, developing like the sections of an expanding telescope. After a brief interval, a blood-red bubble formed at the tip, which burst with a noise like a pop-gun, projecting its dust of spores.

Aurore Lescure, the first woman astronaut to have gone into space, returns to Earth with deadly alien spores which feed on electricity and threatens to utterly destroy our civilization.

The Nyctalope Steps In is a collection of 15 stories featuring France's premier pulp superhero from the 1920s and 1930s. The title piece is a translation of a rare tale serialized in a regional newspaper in 1942, the last story ever written by the character's creator, Jean de La Hire, in which his hero comes to terms with France's occupation by the Nazis.

Fourteen other stories, eight of which were especially written for this volume, offer more exciting adventures from the Nyctalope's secret origins, lost in the mists of time, to his excursions into the future, from the blood-drenched trenches of World War I to the far-off planet Mars.

Also included in this book is a complete Nyctalope chronology by Emmanuel Gorlier.

THE WING by Jean Richepin
adapted by Brian Stableford

She had had a vision of Joson winged, wanting to fly toward her in order to ask her for the figures on electrical fertilization, and she had great difficulty stopping herself from crying out: "No! Don't fly like that! You'll have a horrible fall! Your wings are poor. It only needs one. That wing I shall furnish myself. Wait!"

The Wing, A Romance of the New Age (1911) is the story of the alerion, a flying machine capable of neutralizing gravity by harnessing Earth's telluric currents, powered by atomic disintegration and controlled by radio signals; but even more, it is the story of its inventors, their lives and loves, and the tragedies that bind them.

The Black Temple
Fantasy and heavy metal collide in this animated, psychedelic quest of barbarians, she-demons, and monsters!

The Black Temple is a 3d Animated film being produced here in Melbourne by Cameron Crichton and SubZero Media. We are looking for sponsors and fans. If you like Conan, Sinbad, Jason and the Argonauts, Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Frazetta, Bisley, Heavy Metal, D&D, Moorcock, Lovecraft, Gor, Gore and Hot Chicks then this film is for you.

PREMISE
Based loosely on Herman Hesse's Steppenwolf, The ageing warrior, Seven, is introspective, philosophical and verging on insanity. He is outcast from society under his own volition as he believes himself above and separate from them, but at the same time he wrestles with his internal 'wolf', his base, lower self, his desire for sex, stimulants and violent conquest. He wanders the land searching for a mystical place called the Black Temple, his Holy Grail, an analogy for his self acceptance which will bring him back into the world and allow him to appreciate life.

INFLUENCE
The amazing films of Ray Harryhausen; Jason and the Argonauts, Sinbad and Clash of the Titans, to name a few, provide huge amounts of inspiration for The Black Temple. Writers like Michael Moorcock, H.P. Lovecraft and John Norman who create worlds of wonder and original fantasy are also inspiring us to create an original world through which we can spin an amazing story.

If you like what we are doing here and you would like to be a part of the production all you have to do is provide a link to your most suitable concept art when you make a sponsor donation, you can donate any amount. As well as receiving the standard rewards for sponsoring The Black Temple you go into the running for your creature concept to be realised as a fully animated 3D character in the movie plus a cash prize of $400.

Join us on Facebook and follow the progress of our production and the concept art competition. All artwork will be uploaded to our facebook album and published in our feed with links to the artist's site. At the end of Stage Two Ten finalists will be selected by the Director and the winner will be judged by our sponsors.

Winners will receive AUD$400, a deluxe pack, an invitation to the premiere screening of The Black Temple, full accreditation in both the film and on IMDB and a featurette in the special features on the DVD release.

The Murania Press edition includes a new Preface by BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER editor Ed Hulse, along with an Introduction by ADVENTURE’s editor, Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, reprinted from the magazine’s “Camp-Fire” department.

BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS is priced at $19.95 and will be available through the new Murania Press web site, which will go on line in mid-November (www.muraniapress.com).

Also coming late next month, after several unavoidable postponements, will be the long-awaited DISTRESSED DAMSELS AND MASKED MARAUDERS.

Additionally, Murania head honcho Ed Hulse offers an apology for recent shipping snafus affecting BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER subscribers: “Some months ago, while simultaneously coping with health problems, financial difficulties and a family tragedy, I accepted the help of a well-meaning friend who offered to assist with order fulfillment and subscriber shipments of BnT’s Spring and Summer issues. Unfortunately, she became overwhelmed and as a result some subscriber copies of issues 29 and 30 fell between the cracks. I believe the errant copies have now all been mailed, but any subscribers who still haven’t received theirs should contact me at bnteditor@yahoo.com.”

Clive Clussler: Devil's Gate (The Numa Files) - Coming November 14th!
Clive Cussler  (Author), Graham Brown (Author)

A Japanese cargo ship cruises the eastern Atlantic near the Azores- when it bursts into flames. A gang of pirates speeds to take advantage of the disaster- when their boat explodes. What is happening in that part of the world? As Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA(r) Special Assignments Team rush to investigate, they find themselves drawn into the extraordinary ambitions of an African dictator, the creation of a weapon of almost mythical power, and an unimaginably audacious plan to extort the world's major nations. Their penalty for refusal? The destruction of their greatest cities.

Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Devil's Gate is one of the most thrilling novels yet from the grand master of adventure.

CONAN THE BARBARIAN (2011) DVD - Coming November 22nd!
The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this summer! Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination — in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds — Conan's exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal 3D action-adventure film. A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil. Deftly adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and faithful to the mythology and psychology of his iconic character, "Conan the Barbarian" stars Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Said Taghmaoui, and Ron Perlman.

CD-ROM: Locus Press, Available now!

  • Mystery, Detective, and Espionage Fiction: A Checklist of Fiction in U.S. Pulp Magazines, 1915-1974 compiled by Michael L. Cook and Stephen T. Miller
  • Monthly Murders: A Checklist and Chronological Listing Of Fiction In The Digest-Size Mystery Magazines In The United States And England compiled by Michael L. Cook
The CRIME, MYSTERY, & GANGSTER FICTION MAGAZINE INDEX: 1915-2010 combines, enhances, and brings up to date the information from these previous indexes, and includes thousands of magazine cover images.
Includes indexes by Author, Title, Issue, Series, Publisher, Artist, and Chronological by Author.

I don't often do reviews. Primarily because I just don't have the time. However, sometimes a product comes along that just screams out to be mentioned. The CRIME, MYSTERY, & GANGSTER FICTION MAGAZINE INDEX is one of those products. If you have a serious interest in the pulps, you will absolutely want to have this CD Index. The CD contains a index for each author, title, issue, series, publisher, and artist, as well as a chronological index by author. There is also an Issue Checklist which I find most helpful. You can look up any crime, mystery, or gangster pulp and display a grid that shows the volume and number of each issue and when it was published. There is also a brief history of the magazine and the publishers name and address (when known). Better yet, when you click on the volume and number for an issue, a new screen reveals the full contents of the magazine along with a thumbnail of the cover that links back to the cover database at Galactic Central!  If you are online, a larger cover scan will be available to view. The index is similar to the online Fiction Mags Index.

The CD Index can be used on a Windows of Macintosh PC with a CD-ROM or DVD drive. Although publication in several hardbound volumes is planned for 2012, the hard copy will no doubt be pricey and not as easy to use as the html version that works with your web browser and is now available at an unbelieveable price. This index has been a work-in-progress for quite a few years and Phil Stephensen-Payne, William G. Contento, and Stephen T. Miller have done an astounding job that they can well be proud of. I heartily recommend this product with no reservations.

Curse of the Phantom Shadow
Pulp inspired film project in the works!

The year is 1948 and the United States has a new enemy, The Phantom Shadow. This dark figure has diabolical plans for captured scientist, Dr. Hammond, and his War Department weapons of mass destruction. Upon the Phantom Shadow launching a treacherous missile attack on key locations in the United States, the government takes action.

There is only one man to call, Agent 236, an elite government agent. Agent 236 has been dispatched to launch a rescue.

Along the way, Agent 236 is befriended by a  spunky, sarcastic, gas station attendant who just happens to have pinup girl good looks.  She also just happens to be looking for a little action, and excitement. Luckily, Agent 236 is the man of her dreams. Agent 236 puts the station attendant and her tow truck into service in pursuit of the Phantom Shadow.

Why Are We Raising Money?
After spending the bulk of my personal savings, we are still short of completing our movie. We need to rent a vintage 1940s tow truck, a green screen stage, and bring our cast and crew to our final shooting location in Pahrump, Nevada.  In addition to this we have post-production costs to consider.
We have 75% of our movie's footage in the can. The last 25% is unfortunately the most expensive.

Rewards
As our way of saying thank you, we are offering rewards. Assuming we reach our funding goals, all of the rewards will be sent out January 12th of 2012. The exceptions being movie credits, and the final DVD. These rewards will arrive approximately in May of 2012. (As soon as post-production has been completed.)

Project Intentions
Once our project has been completed, we intend to submit it to many film festivals. More importantly we hope to use this short film as a launch pad to a feature length film with the same characters. Ideally we would like to shoot 3 feature length movies with these characters, and situations. Most importantly, we want a showcase to demonstrate the talent of our cast and crew.

Project History
These characters and situations are the culmination of almost one decade of work. They had their origins in comic book proposals. I have spent the last three years, in many cases working without a crew, assembling props from scratch,  and acquiring our initial footage. This has been a labor of love, passion, and limitless tenacity. As anyone who knows me will attest, I always finish what I start.

Thank you for stopping by our project's page, and we hope you can find it in your hearts (and wallets) to help us in this endeavor!

Dime Novel Castle
Now available!

Doc Con 14 - Saturday, November 12, 2011!

It has been a challenging year this year to prepare for this con, but we finally have some information to get to all of you.
Doc Con 14 will be held at
Courtney Rogers' house in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday, November 12, 2011.
.
Courtney will open his doors at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, with the con officially kicking off at 10 a.m. We will be going until 5 or 6 p.m. After that time, those who would like to stay are invited to “Doc Con after Dark.”

There will be an entrance fee of $20, just like the past three years. This amount will get you a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze #4" that Jay Ryan is feverishly putting together, plus cover lunch. The main food and soft drinks and water will be provided. We will have several activities throughout the day to keep everyone occupied, plus plenty of time for individual and group discussions. It will be our usual great day of fun and fellowship based around Doc Savage.

Jay Ryan will be hosting Friday night activities, which will include going out for dinner and then recording a radio play at his home.
Stay tuned for more information regarding Friday night.

We will also convene for Sunday breakfast for those so inclined.

Here is what you need to do:
— Let us know if you are attending
— We will have a raffle again this year. Those choosing to participate should bring an item or items.
— Bring whatever items you want to give away, sell, or show off
— We are also asking everyone to bring some ancillary food items. Either chips, desserts or other snacks would be great.
Please let us know what you'd like to bring so we can (hopefully) prevent us from getting too much of one thing.
— Bring $20 cash for the entrance fee
— Bring cash (or check) in case there is something you see to buy. Terry Allen will be coming with plenty of Fantom Press merchandise, too.
— Bring your ideas for a short session to discuss Doc Con 15 and future of Doc Con

Thank you for your patience, and we all look forward to seeing each other in November.
Courtney Rogers & William Lampkin

Electric Tiki / Sideshow Collectables: DOC SAVAGE STATUE
Now available and pre-orders are shipping!

Sideshow Collectables and Electric Tiki presents the eighteenth character
in its ongoing tribute to Classic Heroes, Doc Savage!

"He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." Clark Savage, Jr., aka Doc Savage, first appeared in 1933 in the pages of Doc Savage magazine. Created by Henry W. Ralston and John L. Nanovic for Street and Smith publications, Doc Savage was created to capitalize on the success of another pulp hero, The Shadow. Writer Lester Dent was the first to fully flesh out the character, and artist James Bama gave the "Man of Bronze" the classic appearance he is known for today. Having been trained by a team of scientists from birth, Doc grew to almost superhuman abilities.

Electric Tiki's Doc Savage statue depicts the hero on an icy winter base, featuring the original "Fortress of Solitude." The translucent blue dome reveals a hidden hatch, featuring the Doc Savage logo. Standing 12" tall, Doc Savage is sculpted by Rubén Procopio and Bryan Wynia.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in 2012!

February 2012
THE COMEDY IS FINISHED by Donald E. Westlake
Cover art by Gregory Manchess

The year is 1977, and America is finally getting over the nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam and the national hangover that was the 1960s. But not everyone is ready to let it go. Not aging comedian Koo Davis, friend to generals and presidents and veteran of countless USO tours to buck up American troops in the field. And not the five remaining members of the self-proclaimed People’s Revolutionary Army, who’ve decided that kidnapping Koo Davis would be the perfect way to bring their cause back to life...

April 2012
BLOOD ON THE MINK by Robert Silverberg

Cover art by Michael Koelsch

Somewhere in Philadelphia, a master engraver is turning out brilliant forgeries of U.S. currency plates for organized crime. To bring the operation down from the inside, the government sends an agent undercover posing as a West Coast crime lord’s right-hand man. It’s a dangerous game of impersonation—one that could prove fatal when the agent’s secret begins to unravel...

Unavailable for half a century and never before published in book form, BLOOD ON THE MINK features a new afterword by the author discussing the novel’s origins in the pages of one of the last surviving pulp magazines—plus two of Silverberg’s short stories from the pulps, also appearing for the first time in more than 50 years.

May 2012
69 BARROW STREET / STRANGE EMBRACE by Lawrence Block

Cover art by Robert McGinnis

69 BARROW STREET:
Greenwich Village: home to every form of depravity and perversion known to man...or woman.

It’s on the streets of the Village that Ralph met Stella—but what started as a love affair between a painter and his seductive muse has become torment as he’s found himself drawn into her world of cruel pleasures. It's a tinderbox of hatred and desire—and when beautiful Susan Rivers moves into their apartment building, tempting Ralph and Stella both, it’s set to ignite.

From dim waterfront bars to the movie houses of Times Square, from nights in rat-trap hotel rooms to drug-fueled orgies in ground-floor apartments, no one can bring 1960s New York to life like Edgar Award winner Lawrence Block. And in this early tale of psychological suspense—unavailable for fifty years and never before published under his real name—readers will discover a harrowing portrait of men and women pushed to their limits and beyond. It’s a double shot of darkness as only Lawrence Block can deliver it.

STRANGE EMBRACE:
They say the show must go on—but in the case of Broadway’s next sensation, A Touch of Squalor, someone’s out to make sure the show never opens. And when threats don’t do the trick, a straight razor to the throat just might.

It’s a case for the NYPD...but with a mysterious killer targeting his cast, producer Johnny Lane can’t just wait in the wings. There’s a Playbill full of suspects, giving Johnny the casting challenge of his career: who to put in the role of murderer, when the wrong call could bring down the curtain on his show—or his life!

Published here for the first time in half a century—and the first time ever under the author’s real name—STRANGE EMBRACE is one of MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block’s earliest detective novels. And for fans of Block’s whodunits who want to see where it all began, it’s cause for a standing ovation.

June 2012!
FALSE NEGATIVE by Joseph Koenig
Cover art by Glen Orbik

JOSEPH KOENIG RETURNS—WITH HIS FIRST NEW NOVEL IN 20 YEARS!

Newspaperman Adam Jordan’s byline ran above two big articles in the early editions. One of them got him fired. The other landed him a job writing true crime pieces for Real Detective magazine. The story he’s working on now—a beauty contestant found strangled on an Atlantic City beach—is one that boardwalk power brokers would rather see covered up then covered. And if Adam keeps digging, he may find that he’s digging his own grave...

First publication ever!

New from Off-Trail Publications:
THE PERIL OF THE PACIFIC by J. Allan Dunn
The complete PEOPLE'S serial
Introduction by John Locke

When J. Allan Dunn broke into the pulps in 1914, he drew upon his well-traveled past for inspiration. The Peril of the Pacific, a five-part serial from Street & Smith’s PEOPLE’S magazine (July-November 1916), incorporates his experiences like no other story, taking for its settings the places in the west that Dunn knew best, San Francisco and California’s Central Coast.

Reprinted for the first time since its original publication, Peril is a Japanese invasion epic. It’s the future history, set in 1920, of a war pitting a force of American irregulars against a relentless naval empire bent on conquest. In the Americans’ favor: iron will and a new generation of futuristic technology. At risk: the entire American west . . . and a beautiful young woman . . .

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Radio Archives

Radio Archives, known as a leading producer of quality Audio collections as well as a popular purveyor of Pulp Fiction announces the blending of the two in its latest product line. Not only is Radio Archives adding twelve new audiobooks to its future lineup, it is doing so with the direction of perhaps the best known Pulp expert and author of the modern era. Acting as series producer, historian/author Will Murray lends his name to Radio Archive’s newest line of audiobooks. Will Murray’s Pulp Classics are now available from Radio Archives and take both Pulp and audio to a whole new level!

Murray’s involvement with past Radio Archives projects led to this new innovation in sharing Pulp classics with today’s audience. “Like everything about my association with RadioArchives.com,” stated Murray, “it was like being struck by lightning. They had just released the first two Doc Savage audiobooks and were preparing The Spider and Secret Agent X, which I had recommended to them, when Tom Brown suggested expanding the line under the umbrella of Will Murray’s Pulp Classics.”

With the success of the Doc Savage audiobooks, based on Murray’s Doc novels, and the early indicators that The Spider audiobook was a hit, discussion of this project turned toward what other classic characters would get the Will Murray’s Pulp Classic treatment. “We already had a full Spider program planned, and the first Secret Agent X novel, The Torture Trust, mapped out,” Murray explained, “so Tom and I hashed out a number of titles that would both compliment and contrast those. As a kind of pulp alternate-reality version of Batman, the Black Bat was a natural. Since Zombies are all the rage, who better than the past master of the undead, Dr. Death? With the legions of weird menaces like mad scientists, vampires and—yes, more Zombies—that he fought, G-8 and His Battles Aces, made sense. And for a dose of Untouchables-style reality, George Fielding-Eliot’s hard-fighting G-Man, Dan Fowler. In almost every case, we’re launching each character with his inaugural exploit.”

Although the stories used in Will Murray’s Pulp Classics first appeared in print during the heyday of the Pulp magazines, Murray sees the transition of these tales to audiobooks as a good and logical one. “Pulp fiction endures because in contrast to the bloated novels modern publishers insist on foisting upon the reading public, vintage pulp fiction tells a fast-moving, never-flagging, riveting narrative that holds you in your seat until you careen to The End. Audiobooks demand that the reader’s attention be held tightly. Whether it’s Doc Savage, the Spider or Dan Fowler, pulp novels are a perfect fit. I’ve had several of my Destroyer novels adapted as audiobooks in years past, but this is the first time I’d been hands-on in this medium since I worked with Roger Rittner on the Adventures of Doc Savage radio series.”

Murray looks forward to the future of the Pulp Classics line and sees the customers and listeners as a vital part of it. “For the first year, we’re going to be introducing our top heroes. The buying public will tell us whether they want more G-8, Dr. Death or the Spider. And I’m sure that same audience will make suggestions. I’d like to do some horror and fantasy pulp writers, like A. Merritt and William Hodgson, a few exceptional Westerns, and high adventures in the Talbot Mundy vein. But pulp fans prefer heroes, so we’ll see if, for example, we can find a Dan Turner detective story that works as an audiobook. Ultimately, I hope we can mine all the major pulp genres. We expect involved and excited listeners will be the ones to surprise us, not vice versa.”

The first two entries in Will Murray’s Pulp Classics are now available from Radio Archives.

If Batman ever had a brother,
he would be the pulp hero called the Black Bat.

Both bat-caped heroes debuted in the same year, 1939. It was a strange coincidence. Blame The Shadow for that. He was in his eighth year fighting crime in the pages of his celebrated pulp magazine, and Orson Welles was bringing him to life on radio, when two different publishers decided the time was perfect to copy The Shadow.

Batman was the creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. He debuted in Detective Comics #37, dated March, 1939, in "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate," which was freely adapted from the 1936 Shadow mystery, Partners of Peril.

At virtually the same time, over at the Thrilling Group pulp house, editor in chief Leo Margulies asked prolific writer Norman A. Daniels to create a new hero for Black Book Detective magazine. Daniels came up with a character he called the Tiger. Margulies liked his idea, but decided the new hero should be more mysterioso, like The Shadow, and renamed him the Black Bat. The new nemesis of criminals was first published in the July, 1939 Black Book Detective.

As they appeared on the covers of their respective magazines, Batman and the Black Bat were strikingly similar. While the Black Bat lacked Batman's signature spread-winged chest emblem and bat-ears on his cowl, both had similar finned gauntlets.

The similarities did not go much beyond their ebony costumes. The Black Bat was a district attorney named Anthony Quinn—this was long before the actor of that name made the scene. Blinded by a cowardly criminal, Quinn lost his sight, his face acid-scarred around the eyes. No longer able to practice law, Quinn retired. But a miracle eye transplant restored his sight, and more. Quinn discovered that he could see in the dark. This gave him inspiration.

Gathering together a small band of assistants—reformed conman "Silk" Kirby and muscleman "Butch" O'Leary—Quinn decided to wage an unrelenting secret war on the criminal element. Joining him is lovely Carol Baldwin. It was the corneas of her dying policeman father which were grafted into Tony's own eyes, restoring his sight.

The first Black Bat adventure, Brand of the Black Bat, relates all that. It's a stirring story of crime and corruption, and of a courageous avenger determined to track down the vicious gangster who robbed him of his brilliant career, all the while thwarting Captain MacGrath of the N.Y.P.D., who suspects Quinn and the Black Bat are one and the same. For like The Shadow, but unlike Batman, The Bat carries a brace of .45 automatics and the will to use them. This does not make the cloaked vigilante popular with the police.

There has never been a media crossover for this long-running pulp hero. No radio show, no movie serial, no comic books. So it is with justifiable pride that RadioArchives.com lures the Black Bat out of the shadows of his original era and into the 21st century with his first audiobook, read with impeccable skill and fidelity by the accomplished Michael McConnohie.  Brand of the Black Bat is available now from Radio Archives for $14.98 for Audio CDs and $9.98 for the Digital Download!

.

In Prince of the Red Looters, The Spider faces one of his most cunning criminal enemies — The Fly! The Fly's ruthlessly efficient crime organization commits a chain of bold and deadly atrocities on New York City, while The Fly taunts The Spider in a series of ever more dangerous duels.

"The sword fights will have listeners sitting on the edge of their seats," Roger says. "Prince of the Red Looters will be a stunning addition to RadioArchives.com's audiobook line."

THE THIRD BEAST - Now available!
by Patrick H. Adkins, author of Lord of the Crooked Paths

Stephen King meets Edgar Rice Burroughs
in a pulp-inspired suburban Lost Race horror thriller.

Anthropologist Carl Stevens looked out at what used to be his quiet suburban neighborhood and mused that his whole world seemed to have changed. He had no idea how right he was. When civilization collapses around you into depravity and madness, the only reasonable response may be to arm yourself to the teeth and try to fight your way out!

A missing child, predatory bands of machete-wielding youths, neighbors who begin to display cranial features more suited to the prehuman fossils Stevens studies—The Third Beast is a gripping tale of imagination, suspense, terror, and headlong action in the tradition of the wildest pulp yarns.

“An impressive accomplishment . . . really nightmarish fantasy, replete with thrills. . . .  I found the story fascinating, its effect powerful.”
—Paul Spencer, editor, Kalki

This 76,000-word novel is now available for Kindle, Nook, iPad, and other devices (including desktop and laptop computers using free, downloadable software) at a limited-time promotional price of only 99 cents.

A free sample of the opening chapters is available from major retailers.
