Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008! Since November 2000, Pulp Adventurecon has been the only show on the east coast devoted specifically to pulp fiction magazines, and their paperback descendants. For the first time, we’re attempting two great shows this year – March 29th and November 1st, 2008. Our first spring show was a success, with plenty of happy customers who entered the Ramada and remained with us for most of the day. As collector/dealer Rick Hall said, “There was BUZZ in the room.” People were buzzing over the latest selection of pulp reprint editions at Mike Chomko’s table; some were buzzing over the John Gunnison’s captivating Adventure House wall display. John brought several issues of Black Mask, the legendary pulp magazine that cultivated the careers of Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner, and many others. If John had brought copies with Dashiell Hammett stories, right now I’d be in serious financial trouble. Rich Greene displayed an intriguing selection of original artwork, including Boris Vallejos’ painting for The Red Terrors, a Doc Savage paperback thriller. Dan Roberts brought several boxes of $1 paperbacks. I scoured through them and purchased some detective-hardboiled gems from the 1950s and 1960s. CJ Henderson chatted up several fans regarding his stories in new anthologies featuring The Domino Lady, The Spider, and The Avenger. His novel “To Battle Beyond” unites the unlikely trio of The Black Bat, The Domino Lady, and Inspector Lagrasse against the Cthulhu menace. Our next show will be NOVEMBER 1, 2008 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ. Past attendees can attest to the convenience of this location –immediately off the New Jersey Turnpike, Exit 7, when you take the Route 206 north ramp, heading toward Trenton. The Ramada is less than 500 feet from the ramp. We’ll have the usual 50 tables with something for everyone … the only thing missing is YOU … Collectors and dealers come from as far away as Virginia and New Hampshire. If you love the old pulp fiction, and live within a few hours of the Trenton, New Jersey area, there is simply no reason not to attend. It's also the 85th anniversary for Weird Tales debut. His tremendous output of poetry, totaling nearly 1000 original poems written over a span of more than fifty years, is of the highest craftsmanship and runs the gamut of subject matter from breathtaking “cosmic” verse about the stars and galaxies to plangent love poetry to pungent satire to delicate imitations of Japanese haiku. This edition prints, for the first time, Smith’s entire poetic work, including hundreds of uncollected and unpublished poems. The poems have been arranged chronologically by date of writing, so far as can be ascertained. This first volume includes poetry from the first two to three decades of Smith’s career, when he published such noteworthy volumes as The Star-Treader (1912), Ebony and Crystal (1922), and Sandalwood (1925). Smith’s early work was written under the tutelage of the celebrated California poet George Sterling, but Smith quickly surpassed his mentor in the writing of cosmic and lyric verse. Smith’s greatest poetic triumph, perhaps, was The Hashish-Eater, a poem of nearly 600 lines that strikingly evokes the myriad suns of unbounded space and the baleful monsters that may lurk therein. Although much affected by Sterling’s passing, Smith carried on in his poetic work, seeking new modes of expression and expanding his range beyond the cosmic and lyrical verse that had dominated his early career. Having taught himself French in the mid-1920s, Smith began composing original poems in French, also translating them into English or translating his earlier English poems into French. Although Smith wrote relatively little verse during the period of his extensive writing of fantastic fiction (1929–35), he resumed work in the later 1930s, especially under the influence of his friends Eric Barker and Madelynne Greene, for whom he wrote the poetic cycle entitled The Hill of Dionysus. In the late 1940s he experimented with imitations of Japanese haiku, and in the 1950s, having taught himself Spanish, he wrote numerous original poems in Spanish. Also among his later output are a number of witty satires on the vagaries of modern poetry. In its entirety, Clark Ashton Smith’s work stands as one of the great literary contributions to twentieth-century poetry. Created even before Superman in comic strips of the '30s, the Phantom is being translated for TV by screenwriters Daniel Knauf and his son, Charles Knauf.
