Dark Horse Comic's Conan series to
end and restart as CONAN THE CIMMERIAN! Dark Horse Comics announced at the San Diego Comic Con that CONAN ends with a double-sized issue #50. But kicking off in May 2008 will be a brand-new series based on the Robert E. Howard creation titled CONAN THE CIMMERIAN, written by current series scribe Tim Truman and drawn by new artist Tomas Giorello, that jumps ahead to Conan’s mercenary days. “The idea is that we’re going to re-title the book for each section of his life,” says Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson. “[Conan creator Robert E.] Howard had very distinct sections of Conan’s life, and each one for us will run about 50 issues and encompass a running narrative that includes several of the Howard stories and books within each arc. Now we’re going to launch again with the second part of his life.” Adds new series editor Matt Dryer, “It’s going to take things in a new direction. Conan’s grown up a lot in a very short period of time. He’s got more experience now than he did in the original series, which will help him to make stronger decisions and be a better warrior. In the original series, he was exposed to a lot of things for the very first time: treacherous people, sorcery, monsters and even gods. Now that he’s had that exposure, he’s going to be better equipped to handle these things as they crop up. And down the road, he’s going to be getting his first taste of leadership.” A new chapter in the Cimmerian saga isn’t the only new addition to the Conan legacy, as artist Giorello—who finishes off the current title with issues #47-#50, replacing outgoing penciler Cary Nord, who departs following September’s Conan #44—joins the long list of pencilers who have rendered the Cimmerian’s adventures. he 33-year-old Giorello lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and initially hooked up with Dark Horse at the San Diego Con in 2001, after Ron Marz introduced him to editor Dave Land, which led to various Star Wars gigs. According to Richardson, the next step for Dark Horse will be to plan out its 50-issue arc on Conan the Cimmerian. “We’ll have a big Conan summit in [a month or so] and start to outline the story for the next arc. Conan has been doing so well that other publishers are copying it, right down to the marketing campaign and reprint strategy.”

Frazetta-inspired
comics - Five new titles on the way from Image Comics! It was announced at Comic Con International that artist Jay Fotos, is moving forward on expanding the line of Frazetta-inspired comics. Fotos announced a line-up of several one shots and a new mini-series, all based on famous Frazetta paintings and featuring the work of a team of recognized comics creators. "The Silver Warrior" is a four-issue mini-series by Fotos, Nat Jones and Joshua Ortega. One-shots include Rick Remender on Frazetta's "Creatures," "Swamp Demon" written by Joshua Ortega, Steve Niles handling "Dracula Meets The Wolfman," and Mark Kidwell doing the same for "Dark Kingdom." "The Frazettas are so pleased with how 'Death Dealer' is turning out and sales are good, that I approached them about continuing on with the 'Frazetta Comic Universe,'" said Fotos. "They think I'm nuts, but I feel these books will be like the Time-Life books of the comic world. If you're a Frazetta fan you must have these on your shelf!" Fotos explained, "With the new 'Silver Warrior' four-issue mini, we wanted to keep in the same world as 'Death Dealer,' tying them together, but still keeping them at arms length from each other. 'Dark Kingdom' and 'Swamp Demon' tie in with the Death Dealer world. 'Dracula Meets the Wolfman' and 'Creatures' are all on their own and all with room to expand if we wanted." "All titles will bare the name 'Frank Frazetta's...' with logos and layout similar to the 'Death Dealer' series," Fotos continued. "Like I said, we are building a library, kind of a brand name with these books so when you see it on the shelf you know it came from us and can expect the same quality." "We are still in development with most of these books," added Fotos. That's why we have all these titles slated for 2008 releases. Visit the Comic Book Resources website for the full article.

Altus Press - Chronology of Shadows: A Timeline of The Shadow's Exploits! CHRONOLGY OF SHADOWS: A TIMELINE OF THE SHADOW'S EXPLOITS by Rick Lai is now available! For the first time in print, Rick Lai's CHRONOLGY OF SHADOWS (his timeline of the pulp character The Shadow) has been updated & assembled in an easy-to-navigate package. From the introduction: This book is an attempt to create a coherent chronology of the published exploits of The Shadow, the pulp hero who was created by Walter B. Gibson under the pseudonym of Maxwell Grant. Many of my observations were based upon valuable information in these excellent reference books written about The Shadow: Frank Eisgruber's Gangland's Doom (Robert Weinberg, 1974), The Shadow Scrapbook (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc., 1979) by Walter B. Gibson (with additional material by Anthony Tollin), The Duende History of The Shadow Magazine (Odyssey Publications, 1980), by Will Murray (with additional material by Walter B. Gibson, Robert Sampson and Theodore TInsley), and Robert Sampson's The Night Master (Pulp Press, 1982). In preparing this chronology, I re-read all the novels according to the submission order in which they were listed in The Duende History of The Shadow Magazine. Before identifying the chronological factors in this pulp series, it must be established which of The Shadow's published exploits form the true series. Besides Gibson, the alias of Maxwell Grant was used by four other contributors to this series, Theodore Tinsley, Bruce Elliott, Lester Dent and Dennis Lynds. Altus Press, 196 pages, 6x9, $14.95 Order from the Lulu.com bookstore at http://www.lulu.com/content/882621 Coming Soon: HALO OF HORROR, an all-new, 128 page story starring Secret Agent X written by Stephen Payne. To the Mysteries of India, Tibet,
and Beyond: The Worlds of Talbot Mundy - July 25, 2007! The LCPA What If ... Science Fiction &
Fantasy Forum and the Motion Picture, Broadcasting, & Recorded Sound Division
present: "To the Mysteries of India, Tibet, and Beyond: The Worlds
of Talbot Mundy" A presentation by Brian Taves, author, Talbot
Mundy: Philosopher of Adventure, editor, Winds From the East: An Anthology of
Stories, Articles, and Poems by Talbot Mundy. A book signing will follow and copies will be available for purchase. An excerpt from the 1953 movie, KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES, adapted from one of Mundy's best-known novels, will be included in the presentation, as well as a portion of one of Mundy's 1940 radio shows. In 1895, 16-year-old Talbot Mundy fled the Victorian upbringing of his native England for a life of adventure. He crossed the entire northern frontier of India, into Tibet, spent four years in Africa, and traveled the Middle East in the wake of World War I. Colonial odysseys of the time led most writers to echo Rudyard Kipling's support of British imperialism, Sax Rohmer's "yellow peril," or Joseph Conrad's bleak "heart of darkness." Not Mundy. His fantasy-adventure books challenged assumptions of Western cultural superiority in favor of Eastern religious teaching and feminism. His ground-breaking fiction in the 1910s through the 1930s was influential in his own time and is still widely read. Fu Manchu - New feature film in the works! On the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, President of Distant Horizon, Anant Singh announced a slate of forthcoming projects that include a retirn of Fu Manchu to the big screen. The revival of the world’s first and most notorious super-villain, Fu Manchu in a new film heads the list of exciting new projects. Fu Manchu has been mostly a forgotten figure, except for the Peter Sellers’ starrer, “The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu” in 1980, and a brief appearance by Nicholas Cage essaying the role in Rob Zombie’s faux-trailer “Werewolf Women of the S.S.” in “Grindhouse.” The film will be produced by Distant Horizon’s Anant Singh and Brian Cox along with Harry Alan Towers and Maria Rohm who were key figures in the popular 1960s series of Fu Manchu feature films starring Christopher Lee – “The Face of Fu Manhcu” (1965), “The Brides of Fu Manchu” (1966), “The Vengeance of Fu Manchu” (1967), “The Blood of Fu Manchu” (1968), and “The Castle of Fu Manchu” (1969). Distant Horizon is currently in discussion with potential writers and directors. Singh said that the project will address the xenophobia of the original material head-on with the possible collaboration with Chinese filmmakers in a bold effort to turn Sax Rohmer’s underlying sentiments on its head. “We will re-invent Fu Manchu as an anti-hero who fits in with a more socially conscious world and that addresses the very complex multi-polar world we all live in today. We have already begun to discuss Fu’s rebirth with a number of exciting talents in Hong Kong and mainland China. If you look at the enduring popularity of films like “The Mummy,” or even “Wolfman” or “Dracula,” It is clear that the old film serial villains still offer an enormous entertainment value that works across a broad, worldwide audience, so reinvention and modern updates always make sense. We can’t wait to re-introduce this character to worldwide movie audiences. Fu Manchu is an icon and a part of cinema’s aristocracy as demonstrated by Quentin Tarantino’s use of the character in “Grindhouse”,” continued Singh.

The Pulp Rack - New additions! Georges Dodds provides this newspaper clipping about ADVENTURE writer Mundy's views on providing assistance to Armenia as that country struggled for its independence and democratic rule following World War 1. These columns of type provide a look at Mundy's life after he had settled down to being a popular author of adventure fiction. Here we see that his writing about exotic lands has led to his being considered something of an expert on foreign relations. It is very interesting to read Mundy's views on the Islamic world and on America's place in the international community from nearly 100 years later. You'll find the article at this URL at The Pulp Rack: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/07/talbot_mundy_am.html This week's Put a Penny in the Pulp Rack's Pocket spiel: Use the link below to purchase Talbot Mundy's "Jimgrim and a Secret Society" -- or any other item during the same Amazon session -- and you'll contribute some sheckels to The Pulp Rack's coffers, for which we thank you kindly. Gateways to Forever: The Story of
the Science-Fiction Magazines, 1970-1980 - Now available! In the 1970s science fiction exploded into the popular consciousness, appearing everywhere along the cultural spectrum—from David Bowie’s alien stage persona to the massively successful global juggernaut that was Star Wars. With the American involvement in Vietnam reaching its bitter conclusion, the Apollo moon program ending, and awareness of humanity’s destructive impact on the environment increasing, our planet began to seem a smaller, lonelier, more fragile place—and the escapist appeal of science fiction grew. Corresponding with these tumultuous events was a period of significant American economic decline, and, as Mike Ashley shows in GATEWAYS TO FOREVER, the once-enormously-popular science fiction magazines struggled to survive. The third volume of this award-winning series chronicles the publications’ most difficult period so far. The decade began with the death of John Campbell Jr., the man who launched the magazine Astonishing, and with it science fiction’s prominence as a genre. The widespread popularization of sci-fi imagery reflected a newly diversified market—new anthologies, fanzines, role-playing games, comics, and blockbuster films all fought for the attention and money of sci-fi fans. Ashley shows how the traditional magazines coped with these setbacks but also how they, as always, looked to the future, as the decade closed and the earliest precursors to the Internet emerged. Mike Ashley’s groundbreaking history is a monument to science fiction’s evolution. As the genre continues to infiltrate mainstream literature, GATEWAYS TO FOREVER is essential reading for anyone interested in seeing how it all began.
