The Howard Review - New issue planned for Howard Days 2007!
Dennis McHaney has announced that there will be a new issue of  THE HOWARD REVIEW in time for Howard Days in June  2007.  Dennis said that he plans to do a new issue once a year, but it will no longer be a magazine.  It will be a book and each issue will be a theme issue.  The first new issue will feature Breckenridge Elkins.

Late in the year, Dennis plans a best of THE HOWARD REVIEW book.  That will most likely be in December.

Dennis also announced that he has done most of the work on a follow up book to ROBERT E. HOWARD: WORLD'S GREATEST PULPSTER. This will be a color book on collecting Howard in the sixties and in the small press. This was originally going to be a black and white book, but Dennis decided it needed to be in color, especially with all those Lancer covers as full pagers.

After these projects are complete and a volume Dennis is planning for Project Pride, he plans to lay off Howard for a while and finish some movie projects he has been working on.

THE LAST MIMZY AND OTHER STORIES  - Available in book stores February 27th!
Originally published as THE BEST OF HENRY KUTTNER

by Henry Kuttner; with an Introductionby Ray Bradbury

These seventeen classic stories create their own unique galaxy of vain, protective, and murderous robots; devilish angels; and warm and angry aliens. In “Mimsy Were the Borogoves”–the inspiration for New Line Cinema’s major motion picture The Last Mimzy–a boy finds a discarded box containing a treasure trove of curious objects. When he and his sister begin to play with these trinkets–including a crystal cube that magnifies the unimaginable and a strange doll with removable organs that don’t quite correspond to those of the human body–their parents grow concerned. And they should be. For the items are changing the way the children think and perceive the world around them–for better or worse.

Originally published in 1975, this collection features a selection of short stories that first appeared between 1939 and 1955 in magazineslike ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION, THRILLING WONDER STORIES, AMAZING STORIES, UNKNOWN, and THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION.
Trade paperback, 5x7, 352 pages    SRP: $13.95

ThePulp Rack - Ryerson Johnson interview!
With the very gracious permission of Will Murray and Doug Ellis, I'm excited and pleased to present this interview with pulp fictioneer Ryerson Johnson. Johnson was Guest of Honor at PulpCon 19, and Murray interviewed him as one of the convention's events. Ellis, publisher of the fanzine PULP VAULT -- perhaps better known now as one of the organizers of the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention -- published the transcribed interview in issue number 8 of that fine publication.

With their permission, The Pulp Rack presents this interview in two parts. For those who enjoyed the pulp-writer name dropping in Paul Malmont's novel, "The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril," you'll find similar treasure here, as Johnson discusses Lester Dent, Arthur Burks, L. Ron Hubbard, and more.

The interview is presented as a PDF scan of the original appearance in
PULP VAULT's pages. For that reason, the break between the two sections isn't perfect -- is, in fact, a bit of a cliff hanger. But perhaps that's appropriate for an interview with a writer who specialized in exciting pulp adventure.
For part one of the interview, visit this URL:   http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/02/an_interview_wi_1.html

Part two of "An Interview with Ryerson Johnson" by Will Murray is now up at The Pulp Rack.

17 new prose short stories of the PHANTOM! High adventure and intrigue in the African jungle, on the high seas, and in the city! There is always justice that needs to be served, whether it's in the present...or the past.

Nearly five centuries ago, during a daring raid at sea, pirates took the life of merchant ship captain Christopher Standish. In the heat of the pitched battle aboard the ship, Standish's son was knocked overboard to wash ashore on a remote beach where he was found by a friendly pygmy tribe. After stumbling upon the body of his father's killer, young Standish swore an oath on the murderer's skull to devote his life, and the lives of his sons and their sons, to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice. To the outside world, this man, seemingly immortal, has always worn the mask. As the legend grew, it transcended the life of any one mortal. And that legend became THE PHANTOM!

PULPDOM
From
publisher C. E. Cazedessus II:
"Pulpdom is a magazine about the popular novelists and the pulp magazines they wrote for during the early 20th century.
It is the current name of a series of magazines that I have published most of my life.
It all began in May 1960 with ERB-dom No. 1, a fanzine about Edgar Rice Burroughs. After some twists and turns for over 36 years, the name PULPDOM was adopted in January, 1997, and the mission of the magazine gelled into a celebration of all the popular pulps & authors, from the 1800s into the 1950s."

"The current December 2006 issue, PULPDOM #47, is mostly about "The Argosy in Transition", a look at the contributors and front covers of most of the issues from Jan. 1912 through 1917, when it became a weekly for the first time since the 1890s. Its 28 pages, has several in color, and is available inside the USA $5 + $1 postage.
Six issue subscriptions are$30."

New York, NY (February 16, 2007) — This June, Baen Books will revive the foremost action hero of the pulp fiction era, The Spider, in a new trade paperback edition entitled, THE SPIDER: ROBOT TITANS OF GOTHAM, featuring three wild action thrillers by legendary pulp writer Norvell W. Baen Books, a leading science fiction publisher with Simon & Schuster distribution, will be presenting The Spider Ring to booksellers through promotional mailings, and at BookExpo America, the American Booksellers Association convention being held in New York City, June 1-3, 2007.  The Spider Ring will make its way onto the hands of fans at the San Diego Comic-Con, July 26-28, 2007.

“Jim Steranko has created a masterpiece of a cover painting for THE SPIDER: ROBOT TITANS OF GOTHAM volume and The Spider Ring premium tradition was revived to celebrate,” states Argosy Communications president Joel Frieman.

Spearheading The Spider Ring project is award-winning cartoonist and designer Chris Kalb, who explains, “We went for something timeless. Something that evokes The Spider’s own ring, but with a 'Spider Club' twist.  Hopefully, we created a new classic."

Moonstone Books - THE PHANTOM GOES TO WAR TO SAVE INVISIBLE CHILDREN!
Moonstone Books & www.InvisibleChildren.com Team Up for  Special Charity Story Arc to Benefit the Victims of Ugandan Civil War Waged with Child Soldiers
For the last decade, a Ugandan Warlord has fought his self-proclaimed Holy War on the backs of children he's stolen from their homes in the middle of the night. After an intense indoctrination of physical, mental and spiritual torture, these children are taught to fight in his name against their own families and peoples. An unimaginable number of children have died for him, while countless more will live out their lives scarred and disfigured, bearing mortal wounds on their souls that will never heal.

Banding together to offer food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and a better life to the children who have managed to escape this madman, are three westerners who created www.invisiblechildren.com. These men have raised awareness of the plight of these children internationally, through independent films, appearances on television such as "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and various guerilla-marketing campaigns, but still so much more needs to be done.

When "The Phantom" creator Lee Falk was alive, he never hesitated to have his heroic creation take on fictionalized versions of the very madmen who make life in third world nations so hellish for those trying to live their lives in peace. To that end, Moonstone Books' newest Phantom scribe Mike Bullock has crafted a three-part story beginning this June and running monthly all summer long to further raise awareness of this terrible man and the atrocities he commits every day.

"This is exactly the kind of Phantom story we've always wanted to do!" said Moonstone Editor in Chief, Joe Gentile. "When Mike brought this to me, I couldn't say yes fast enough. Sure it's great to create quality comic books, but it's far more rewarding knowing you're doing something that makes a positive difference in the world around us."

To bring this tale to life in the pages of *The Phantom*, Moonstone Books has enlisted legendary artists Darryl Banks and Terry Austin to create a series of "B" covers to adorn each issue. For every "B" cover purchased, Moonstone Books has pledged to make a donation to www.invisiblechildren.comon behalf of those hurt by this tragedy. Industry vet and fan favorite artist Marat Mychaels has crafted the A covers while interior art will be handled by regular series artists Silvestre Szilagyi and Bob Pedroza.

"This may very well be the most important comic story I've ever written," states Bullock. "I cannot over stress how important it is for all of you to pre-order these issues from your comic retailer."

Pulps 1st - Pulp Image Library Version 5 is now available!
The Pulp Image Library version 5 is now available with almost 21,000 pulp cover images.  It'sthe best pulp cover reference available. There are also new versionsof the SF & Fantasy, Detective & Mystery, Anthology, Western,Heroes & Villains CDs and a new Air and War CD.
Pulp Image Library version 5 retails for $50 and can be ordered from http://www.pulps1st.com
The Pulps 1st website should be updated soon or you can contact Mark Halegua at msh@pulps1st.com

Review:  If you enjoy viewing pulp cover art, then Pulp Image Library version 5 is just what you are looking for. With almost 21,000 cover images, you will spend countless hours looking at all the images on this CD.  The CD contains more images in one place than you are likely to find anywhere else. Included are images from the hero pulps, sports pulps, weird menace pulps, western pulps, romance pulps, detective pulps, adventure pulps, science fiction and fantasy pulps, you name it, they are here.

The pulp cover images for each pulp title are containedin a separate folder. Folders are arranged alphabetically, so locating covers for a particular title is a snap. Looking for a particular image by publication date? No problem! All files are named by the month and year of the magazine. There are folders for 903 different pulp titles, although some folders are empty awaiting the availability of images. The images themselves range in size from 144 pixels wide (the smallest I found so far)
to 710 pixels (the largest I found so far). Most images seem to be in the range of 350 to 500 pixels wide, a good size for viewing. Resolution variesfrom 72 dpi to 200 dpi in the images I have viewed so far.

You are probably thinking, why should I pay for a CD when I can download images off the Internet for free?  The answer is simple. I have been downloading cover images off the Internet for years
and I have many of the cover imagesthat are on this CD.  Some of my downloaded cover images are largerin size and/or of better quality. However, I have downloaded nowhere near 21,000 cover images and my downloaded images are not as conveniently organized. You can spend lots and lots of hours downloading and cataloging images yourself or buy this CD and start enjoying the images right away. Pulp Image Library Version 5 is a good value that is well worth the price of admission.

The Pulp Rack - New updates!
"FLAMING LONDON: Alternative Fictional History by Joe R. Lansdale."
FLAMING LONDON is the second of three books from Lansdale published by Subterranean Press, in which he creates an alternative history for fictional and semi-fictional versions of historical personages. (How is a personage different from a person? Is a personage like a parsonage -- the home in which a person or a parson lives? I'm starting to feel like an Abbott and Costello bit here...)
You'll find the new posting at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/02/flaming_london.html

Pulp Uncovered: How Pulp FictionMagazines Changed America  - March 15-18,2007
A Pulp Fiction Festival Sponsoredby Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island
Cheap pulp fiction magazines of the early 1900s defied social taboos against violence, sex and bad taste. Condemned by moralists and scorned by the elite, pulp stories flaunted violence, reveled in promiscuous sex, and stereotyped just about everyone.

Visit the Pulp Uncovered website at
http://www.pulpuncovered.com/

For more information contact:  info@pulpuncovered.com

The Festival is a community event sponsored by the American studiesdepartment at Brown University and it celebrates pulp fiction magazines from the 1920s-40s.We are looking at how the art, stories, and creators of pulp magazines influenced/mirrored society and how they broke many social taboos.

The Festival will take place March 15-17 in honor of the 70th anniversaryof the death of HP Lovecraft, Providence's own pulpster. There will be two museum exhibits on Brown's campus: one on the action-detectivepulps including Doc Savage, and another exhibit on Lovecraft and the horror pulps.

Brown is working with many organizations such as the Rhode Island Historical Society, Providence PreservationSociety, RISD Museum, the Providence Athenaeum and Lovecraft's old haunt the Ladd Observatory, all of which are co-sponsoring public events. For example, there will be two walking tours on different aspects of Lovecraft's life and work, we'll have a RISD Museum event talking about the art of the pulps, a Lovecraft astronomy night at the Ladd Observatory, and various lectures and panel discussions. We also have a Pulp Film Festival at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, featuring some pulp-inspired movies and some film noir classics. As this is a large community event, I expect we'll have some good media coverage.

IMPORTANT SCHEDULING CHANGE!
FRIDAY NIGHT PULP PARTY!
Despite having booked our hotel dates and times nearly a year in advance, we've just been informed by the hotel that they've double-booked the dealer room for Friday, May 4, and we will not have access to this room until Friday evening.  But would something like this deter Conan the Cimmerian?  No, by Crom!  And it won't deter us either! Accordingly, our Friday schedule has changed for the dealer room. We will now begin dealer set-up as soon as we can on Friday, which we currently anticipate will be between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.  It's possible that dealer set-up may be able to begin a little earlier than that; as the situation becomes clearer, we will post updates to the website.  The dealer room will open to the public at 7:00 p.m. and will remain open until midnight for our Friday Night Pulp Party.  We will begin our Pulp Filmfest on Friday afternoon for those arriving prior to the opening of the dealer room, and will no longer be selling Early Bird Admissions.  The flier is still accurate for Saturday's and Sunday's schedules.  We apologize for the late change but hope you'll still join us for a fun Friday night filled with buying and selling pulps (and telling tall tales of the ones that got away)!

Black Light, A Story of Karma
Joe Beddington is heir to an enormous fortune, but must kowtow to the whims of his mother. They are living a while in India, attempting to find the lost daughter of a friend of Mrs. Beddington.

Joe falls in love with Rita, a girl who is a devotee in a secret temple. Like a spider, Mrs. Beddington weaves a complex web that will advance her goals but frustrate Joe's. This web draws in several others, including a local Maharajah, who delights in cruetly.

But it is not Mrs. Beddington's web at all--it is the unfolding of the wheel of karma. At the proper moment, the head of the temple calls on divine justice in a stunning Hindu ritual called "the black light," and each character must confront the consequences of his or her deeds--or die from the bite of the cobra of justice.

This is the only complete version of this great novel ever publishedin the United States.
Price: $19.99.

The Thunder DragonGate
The Thunder Dragon Gate is the name of a monastery in Tibet, thought to be the portal to Shambala, and therefore revered as a symbol for the threshold to higher levels of spiritual consciousness. American secret agent Tom Grayne and his wife Elsa are trying to smuggle the keeper of the gate, Thö-pa-ga, back into Tibet to resume his ordained duty-and to learn what they can about the path to Shambala.

Only a few things stand in their way--a power-mad rajah named Dowlah, an array of Chinese and Japanese agents, the Tibetan government, the Indian government, and a huge man-eating spider called a shang-shang. This ferocious spider--the female eats its mate after copulating-is the source of many common Tibetan superstitions which are most effective in keeping the ignorant and the fanatical away from the Thunder Dragon Gate. It is said that the gate itself is guarded by a shang-shang!

This fast-paced adventure novel by Talbot Mundy illuminates the power of the mind to defeat superstitions-and the need to do so before one can tread the path to enlightenment.     $18.99

Winds from the East
A collection of stories, articles, and poems by Talbot Mundy, edited by Brian Taves
Talbot Mundy was one of the most popular writers of adventure fiction in America during the first half of the 20th century. His stories and novels brought to life the customs and lifestyles of India, Tibet, and the Middle East more vividly than any other writer.

Beyond that, Mundy was one of the most inspired esoteric writers of the time. His novels are filled with insights into not only the mystic traditions of India and Tibet, but also the basic spiritual principles of reincarnation, karma, destiny, duty, and beauty.

While many Mundy novels are still widely read today, most of his stories, poems, and essays have been unknown for more than fifty years. This anthology corrects this omission. It reprints many of his key "shorter" writings in a single "reader," edited by Mundy biographer Brian Taves. It is an excellent introduction to the work of this seminal author-and the wondrous world of his wisdom and imagination.    $21.99

Darkside Press/Midnight House- Coming soon!
DarksidePress has several forthcoming volumes of interest to pulp (and pre-pulp) fans:

Next up from Midnight House is Uel Key's collection of the adventures of supernaturalsleuth Arnold Rhymer taken from the pages of PEARSON'S MAGAZINE 1917-1922.

From Jess Nevin's The Pulp Heroes:
ProfessorArnold Rhymer, M.D.,a doctor and lecturer who works closely with Scotland Yard on casesthat are unusual or exotic. Rhymer, though, for all his education, is actually on the youngish side. He's tall, lean and agile, although he is not superhumanly strong. Nor does he have psychic abilities or occult powers; if his opponent won't be brought down with cold steel or hot lead, as (for example) a vampire he confronts will not, Rhymer is in trouble. Of course, he's sly and persistent, and what he lacks in extraordinary physicality he makes up for in erudition and cunning. (He also relies, Holmes-like, on logic; "guessing is always destructive to logic. Far better observe small facts upon which large impressions may depend.") His stories also give hints of his being widely traveled; he's intimately acquainted, for example, with the appearance of a Gurkha's kukri knife, and that's knowledge that no ordinary English doctor would have. He is, of course, a very effective occult detective.

Darkside Press is putting the finishing touches on THE CHILDLESS ONES, the first volume collecting all of Daniel F. Galouye's short fiction.  Daniel Francis Galouye published his first novelette "Rebirth" in William L. Hamling's IMAGINATION, a magazine famous for its intergalactic-set space operas. Later novelettes and stories appeared in IMAGINATION, GALAXY, and FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION.  His first novel, DARK UNIVERSE, was published in 1961 and was short listed for the Hugo Award.

In the heat of the pitched battle aboard the ship, Standish¹s son was knocked overboard to wash ashore on a remote beach where he was found by a friendly pygmy tribe. After stumbling upon the body of his father¹s killer, young Standish swore an oath on the murderer¹s skull to devote his life, and the lives of his sons and their sons, to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice. To the outside world, this man, seemingly immortal, has always worn the mask. As the legend grew, it transcended the life of any one mortal. And that legend became The Phantom.

Greenberg).  You'll find it at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/01/wood_on_the_sno.html

"Manly Wade Wellman's Sergeant Jaeger Stories."
Contrary to how the Black Mask style as practiced by Dashiell Hammett and his hard-boiled confreres seemed to influence so pervasively popular fiction writing in the United States — Hammett's staccato, fast-moving style became common in the hero pulps, among some western and science fiction writers, and nearly the de facto style of Gold Medal authors and others during the paperback original novel boom — the horror tale and weird tale typically kept a more lush style because of the Weird Tales genre's reliance on atmosphere and building up of sensation. Robert E. Howard's sword and sorcery tales were something of a hybrid; but by the time Karl Edward Wagner was writing his Kane stories he had a style that was recognizably influenced by the hard-boiled and mainstream fiction styles.

In reading what editor John Pelan calls the Sergeant Jaeger stories — "Fearful Rock" (Weird Tales issues for February, March, and April 1939); "Coven" (Weird Tales July 1942); and "Toad's Foot" (The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction April 1979) — Manly Wade Wellman clearly did not follow the laconic Black Mask style. If anything, Wellman's southern-influencedstorytelling here almost seems leisurely, if I can go so far, and the horrific details he relates are all the more frightening because of the controlled manner he uses to relate these tales.

You can read this essay at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/01/manly_wade_well.html

"Joe Kubert's Ape Man: From Newsprint to Glossy Stock Hardcover."
This little essay looks at Tarzan — The Joe Kubert Years vol. 1 (Milwaukie, Oregon: Dark Horse Books. 2005).
Dark Horse has done Edgar Rice Burroughs' fans and Joe Kubert's fans a great service by collecting these stories from the beginning of National Periodicals' (DC Comics) run of Tarzan comics (issues 207 through 214, published in 1972). (A trip to the comic shop turns up volume 2 as recently published.) Russ Manning was a wonderful comic book artist, but Kubert's storytelling and artwork elevated the character from the kiddie-safe presentation of Dell/Gold Key comics to better reflect the raw savagery and iconic grandeur of ERB's most famous creation.
