BLOOD AND THUNDER: THE LIFE AND ART OF ROBERT E. HOWARD By Mark Finn
- Now available for pre-order!

Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan the Cimmerian, Solomon Kane, King Kull, and many other characters that helped define the genre of heroic fantasy, lived all of his thirty years in the small town of Cross Plains, Texas. While his books remain continually in print, Howard himself has fallen into obscurity, the details of his personal life become mired in speculation, half-truth, and lies. This engaging biography traces the roots of his writings, correcting many long-standing misconceptions, and takes us on a tour of Howard's world as he saw it best: through his own incomparable imagination.

Mark Finn is an award-winning scholar, author, essayist and playwright. He was the recipient of the 2005 Cimmerian Award for Outstanding Achievement in Robert E. Howard studies, and he has presented papers on the author at many international conferences. He lives in Austin, Texas.

This book is scheduled for November release from MonkeyBrain Books.
Paperback: 400 pages; Dimensions (in inches): 6 x 9
Release Date: November 2006, List Price: $15.95

Visitors will find 20% off storewide for the entire first month. You can also sample audio clips from the new line of REB Inc. Audio Books. And each month starting in July they will offer at least one of their regular $4.99 ebooks for just 10 cents!

FORTHCOMING EBOOKS
Renaissance E Books congratulates 93-years young veteran pulpster Stuart J. Byrne, whose magnum opus, "Star Quest," was the #1 bestselling science fiction ebook at several key sites for over three weeks - and spent more than two months in the top ten! Fans of his fabulous Star Man series will be delighted to know that Renaissance E Books will be publishing the entire series in omnibus editions, each volume showcasing two classic Star Man adventures. Plus, Renaissance E Books is bringing into print for the first time-ever all three novels in Byrne's classic Michael Flannigan pulp trilogy, exactly as the author wrote them: "Land Beyond the Lens," "The Golden Gods" and "The Return of Michael Flannigan" (the first two were published in a truncated volume many years ago, minus the concluding installment, and with a sexed up text the author did not approve, as Godman).

Renaissance E Books is are truly excited that they have just acquired reprint rights from the good folks at Spectrum Literary Agency to a round two dozen classic pulp space operas by the writer who invented space opera, Edmond Hamilton. Find out why they didn't just give an award for Sense of Wonder to Edmond Hamilton - they named it after him! Most of these moody, poetic novellas and novels have never been reprinted since their first appearance in pulps like IMAGINATION, UNIVERSE, and THRILLING WONDER STORIES in the 1950s, when Hamilton was at the height of his powers as a writer, producing his most haunting and affecting prose works with one hand, while turning out memorable scripts for DC comics like Batman, Adam Strange, the Legion of Superheroes, and the first ever Superman-Batman team-up with the other. Something of the flavor of these wonderful lost space operas can be gleaned from their titles which include "Corridor of the Suns," "Citadel of the Star Lords," "Earthman," "Come Home" (AKA "The Sun Smasher"), "Planet of Exile," "The Ship from Infinity," "Fugitive of the Stars," "Lords of the Morning Star," "Thunder World," "Battle for the Stars," "World of Never-Men," and "Doom Star." This treasure chest of delights for those who love classic pulp space opera even includes a never-before-reprinted tale of the Star Kings, Star Hunter. Newer readers will get a chance to discover why THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION says "the scope, color, and dynamic clarity of [Hamilton's] liberated action did much to define the Sense of Wonder for generations of readers" and hails his work as "genuine space opera."

BARGAIN OMNIBUS EDITIONS
Renaissance E Books bargain omnibus editions of famous sf/f/h classics - typically three complete novels reprinted in one inexpensive ebook - have proved such a hit with ereaders that we are stepping up production of these reading feasts. Already in print are The First Lord Dunsany Omnibus: The Book of Wonder, A Dreamer's Tales, Fifty-One Tales, The Gods of Pegana, and the Sword of Welleran and Other Stories; The First William Morris Omnibus: House of the Wolflings, Well at World's End, Wood Beyond the World; The First H. G. Wells Omnibus: Invisible Man, War of the Worlds, ;Island of Dr. Moreau; The Second H. G. Wells Omnibus: Time Machine, First Men in the Moon, When the Sleeper Wakes; Three Classic Fantasy Novels: Stephen's Crock of Gold; Garnett's Lady into Fox; Thackeray's The Rose and the Ring. Just out and already on many fantasy ebook bestseller lists is Legends of an Extraordinary Gentleman: The Allan Quatermane Omnibus #1 - Allan's Wife, Marie, Child of the Storm, the first of a five volume omnibus reprinting of the strange encounters of H. Rider Haggard's immortal character with African magic, majesty and might. More omnibus editions will be forthcoming.

Wildside Press - Schedule update!
Wildside Press has hired full-time production person Steve Segal to work on their various magazine publications and get them back on schedule. The
Wildside Press production schedule got backed up during the first half of 2006 and Wildside Press apologizes to those who have waited longer than expected for issues to arrive, however, they are now getting things back on track.

The new issues of WEIRD TALES, FANTASY MAGAZINE and ADVENTURE TALES
(both the regular edition and the book paper edition)
are on the press right now. The next issues of STRANGE TALES and H.P. LOVECRAFT'S MAGAZINE OF HORROR are scheduled for early September. From there, all the titles will move forward on a regular, predictable, quarterly schedule (except, of course, for WEIRD TALES, which is bimonthly).

Wildside Press would really like to hear everyone's feedback on the magazines -- opinions on anything and everything, from subscription service to page design and whatever else happens to strike your brain. Please feel free to drop an email to
Steve Segal directly with suggestions or complaints: stephenhsegal@yahoo.com.

Doc Savage and The Shadow - New authorized pulp reprints!
The Shadow and Doc Savage are returning to thrill fans old and new. Anthony Tollin has acquired the license to reprint the original Shadow and Doc Savage pulp novels, and will be publishing trade paperback reprints in partnership with Nostalgia Ventures, Inc., a leader in the field of radio and television nostalgia. These Shadow and Doc Savage volumes are officially licensed by Condé Nast, the owner of the famous properties.

"This is a dream come true for me," proclaims Anthony Tollin, the former DC Comics professional who is also a leading pulp and radio historian. Tollin co-authored Walter B. Gibson's THE SHADOW SCRAPBOOK in 1979, and has long desired to get Gibson's Shadow novels back in print. "We're reissuing the classic pulp stories with the original covers and interior art, with the type reset for clarity. We're initially releasing the stories in a double-novel format. Our first volume, already at the printers, reprints Walter Gibson's 'Crime, Insured' and 'The Golden Vulture,' a Shadow novel that Lester Dent wrote in 1932 that was later revised by Gibson and published in 1938. This is the Shadow novel that won Lester Dent the Doc Savage contract. Our first story, 'Crime, Insured' is recognized as Walt Gibson's greatest action thriller, in which a criminal organization penetrates The Shadow's operation and captures his major agents, and The Shadow is trapped as the entire New York underworld invades his sanctum."

This series of trade paperbacks is the first licensed publication of The Shadow novels in 22 years, and the first authorized reprinting of the original Doc Savage pulp novels in 15 years.  The Shadow Magazine debuted in 1931 and launched the 1930s hero-pulp boom, inspiring dozens of characters including the Phantom Detective, the Spider, the Avenger and the Green Lama. Bob Kane and Bill Finger cited The Shadow as a major influence on the creation of Batman, while Clark Savage Jr., the Man of Bronze, was a major influence on the creation and development of Clark Kent, the Man of Steel.

"If Street & Smith had not published The Shadow and Doc Savage, there might never have been any Superman or Batman," observes popular-culture historian Will Murray, who collaborated with Lester Dent on seven posthumous Doc Savage novels. "Between them, Walter Gibson and Lester Dent created the archetype of the superhero, and most of  the fiction formulas and trappings of the eternal battle between superhero and supervillain that has come to dominate popular culture in the last 75 years. I like to call Lester Dent 'the Father of the Superhero' because, while Superman and Batman had other influences, both borrowed liberally from Doc Savage, the original owner of the Fortress of Solitude."

The first volume of The Shadow is at the printers and will be at selected specialty stores in mid-July, and shipping from Diamond Distributors in October. Each paperback will retail for $12.95 and contain two complete, unabridged pulp adventures of The Shadow, with reproduction of the original covers by George Rozen and interior illustrations by Edd Cartier
.

The reprints can also be ordered directly from: Anthony Tollin; P.O. Box 761474; San Antonio; TX 78245-1474 (sanctumotr@earthlink.net; add $3.00 for postage and packaging) or from Nostalgia Ventures' website (www.nostalgiaventures.com).

The reprints will also be available from Adventure House
Bud Plant,  Mike Chomko, Vintage Library, and other pulp dealers. The first volume of  The Shadow will be available at Pulpcon and the San Diego Comic Con.

The first volume of Doc Savage will follow in November and will contain "Fortress of Solitude" and "The Devil Genghis." These are the two pulp adventures that pitted the Man of Bronze against master-villain John Sunlight. Rounding out each volume are historical articles by pulp historians including Tollin and Murray.

A second volume of The Shadow, reprinting "The Chinese Disks" and "Malmordo," will also be released in November.
The third volume of The Shadow will contain "The Murder Master" and "The Hydra."
Priority is being given to the pulp stories that haven't been previously reprinted in mass-market paperbacks or hardcovers.  Only a small fraction of the 325 pulp novels were reprinted by Bantam, Pyramid/Jove, Dover and the Doubleday Crime Club.  The goal is to help fill that gap and publish many of the good stories that have never been reprinted.

"And that's only the beginning," Tollin adds. "The Shadow and Doc Savage aren't the only classic pulp characters I've been licensed to reprint. I think fans of classic adventure heroes are going to be very excited by some of our future projects."

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, has been hailed by literary critics as the inventor of modern horror, and a cultivating force behind such modern writers as Robert Bloch (Psycho), Wes Craven (The Craft, Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream), and Stephen King (Pet Semetary, Carrie, Children of the Corn), just to name a few.

The Rats In The Walls
After its complete restoration, the narrator of this tale moves into his ancestral family home. Soon afterward, however, he begins to hear noises in the walls. Suspecting rats, he sets out traps but finds these vermin are not the kind so easily dispatched. One of the all-time creepiest of Lovecraft's tales.

The Shunned House
In the city of Providence stands an antique home of which everyone whispers. Never called “haunted” exactly, it is known as a place “unlucky,” one in which people have supposedly died in alarmingly great numbers. This is what Lovecraft's narrator tells us, just before he and his uncle begin a series of investigations into the old place, a place with a terrible odor, one that is stronger in the basement than any place else--

The Music Of Eric Zann
In the city of Lights, an impoverished student hears incredible music coming from peaked garret overhead. He knows little of the violin, but is certain from the fantastic pieces he hears night after night that he is in the presence of a highly original genius. But, it isn't long before he finds himself wondering, why does Zann only play at night? And why every night?

Brought to life again by the incomparable Wayne June come horrors from the mind of the Master himself, in the way that only he can.

3 CDs, almost 3 hours of AudioBook entertainment!

Conan lays waste to sorcerous abominations birthed from the wretched desert as famous horror and western writer Joe R. Amidst the burning desolation of Stygia, Conan has acquired a camel, a drunken companion, and objects of great power coveted by a wizard whose greed is only rivaled by his hate. What Conan seeks is profit, but he will take a fight—especially if it means teaching a dark sorcerer about the merciless ways of Cimmerian steel.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Keith Richards, who producers have been in talks with for years to play the role of Captain Jack Sparrow’s pop, has finally agreed to star in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. According to The Star, Richards will probably film his “Pirates of the Carribean 3” role in August, whilst The Rolling Stones are taking a respite from their tour.  Director Gore Verbinski said with a wink that Richards' role would be "open to interpretation."

Though Internet scuttlebutt had it that producers tried to get Richards for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (due out next month), it was stated that the plan was always to get the rocker to do an appearance in the third film, and the third film only.

CONAN - Boaz Yakin to write and potentially direct "Conan the Barbarian"
VARIETY reports that Warner Bros. is looking to re-establish Conan as more than a chat host. Warner Bros. has set Boaz Yakin to write and potentially direct "Conan the Barbarian," a new take on the Robert E. Howard-created character.

WB is eyeing an early 2007 production start for the film, which will be produced by Irving Azoff, Jon Jashni, Richard Alexander and Akiva Goldsman. Peter Sederowsky and Fredrik Malmberg of Paradox Entertainment, the intellectual property company that controls rights to the Howard estate, exec produce.

Yakin, best known for writing and directing "Fresh" and for directing the gridiron hit "Remember the Titans," has been a fan of the Howard series since childhood and came up with a take that impressed the studio.

Yakin's concept is more faithful to the Howard story than were the two
Dino De Laurentiis-produced "Conan" films that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the sword-wielding conqueror.

WB has tried diligently to revive Conan and got close twice. "The Matrix" directors Larry and Andy Wachowski circled, and then Robert Rodriguez emerged, but hiring the latter became problematic after he quit the Directors Guild of America so he could co-helm "Sin City" with Frank Miller.

Thanks to Rusty Burke and the REHComics newsgroup for the information.

Indiana Jones 4
According to George Lucas, Sir Sean Connery – who has apparently retired, not that that ever means anything in Hollywood – will indeed be returning for “Indiana Jones 4”, reprising his role as Indy’s wise-old pop, Henry Jones.

According to Lucas, Connery has been written into the script, so now it’s just a matter of coaxing him into doing it.
"I would love him to be in the next Indiana Jones...maybe I can push him into it," Lucas told the show. "We are writing him in whether he wants to do it or not."

"24" Movie - Work is underway!
It's now official - work is underway on "24: The Movie". Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox has closed a deal with series creators Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow, as well as showrunner Howard Gordon, to bring the Kiefer Sutherland real-time thriller to the bigscreen.

Surnow and Cochran will write the script, with Gordon working on the story - a rough sketch of the plot has already been drafted. No talent deals are yet in place, though Sutherland -- an exec producer of the hit Fox series -- has made it clear he's interested in starring in the film should it snag a greenlight.

It's understood the work on the script will begin late this summer, just as production on the sixth season of the show gets under way. Once execs see the script and look at ratings for the first few episodes of season six, they'll be able to make a decision on greenlighting production of the film very early in 2007.

Shooting will then take place next spring and summer during the hiatus between season six and seven. The plan is then to abandon the real-time conceit of the TV show which allows scribes much greater plot possibilities, most notably international travel. The film is not expected to be tied too heavily to the "24" mythology, allowing those who haven't watched the series to understand the movie's action.

Hippocampus Press Newsletter
The following information is from the latest Hippocampus Press newsletter.

Coming in June
LOVECRAFT'S NEW YORK CIRCLE is at the printer but has been plagued with technical problems. The cover has had to be redone twice due to corrupt or missing fonts. We have taken the delay as an opportunity to make a few changes inside the book as well, incorporating several late revisions which Mara Kirk Hart suggested, and which strengthen the book. Without the necessity of redoing the cover, these interior changes would not have been able to be made, so there is a silver lining to these clouds of delay. This book will probably hit the streets in late June.

Coming in July
Scott Connor's anthology of criticism on Clark Ashton Smith, THE FREEDOM OF FANTASTIC THINGS, is in the final proof stage and will probably be released in July. The paperback will appear slightly in advance of the hardcover, but we do not expect the lengthy delay between release of the two states that happened with our last set of hardcovers, Lovecraft's COLLECTED ESSAYS Volumes 3 & 4.

Coming in August
In August, we will release the next entry into our Lovecraft's Library series, AN EXCHANGE OF SOULS and LAZARUS by Barry Pain and Henri Beraud respectively. We are releasing these two short novels in an unusual binding style recalling the "Ace Doubles" of the past, whereby one work was printed in the normal fashion, and another work printed upside down and backwards, so that one would read it by turning the book over! This has of course necessitated two different cover designs. We have been fortunate to obtain the very rare cover art from the 1911 original edition of AN EXCHANGE OF SOULS. LAZARUS featured a text-only cover design in its original 1925 release, which we have temporarily placed at our website for your inspection. Our edition will feature a striking print by Ralph Fabri.

Incidentally, this "Ace Double" format would appear to be a good way of putting two works together that are too short to be issued by themselves. We are planning future Hippocampus Doubles including, F. B. Young's COLD HARBOUR and Leland Hall's SINISTER HOUSE, to be released together in this fashion.

Coming in September
W. H. Pugmire's collection THE FUNGAL STAIN AND OTHER DREAMS will be released in September. The great Lovecraftian artist Robert H. Knox returns to Hippocampus for this title, and will be providing cover art and interior illustrations.  RHK is working closely with Mr. Pugmire to develop suitably decadent images that reflect the author's unique vision.

Mythos enthusiasts will welcome the news that Bob Price has agreed to come on board as a sort of "series editor" for our burgeoning line of Mythos titles.

Work is progressing apace on the final volume of Lovecraft's COLLECTED ESSAYS, the first volume of Smith poetry collection, and the Howard critical anthology. Expect more information on these and other titles in the near future.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. - DVD set of Season 1 delayed!
It looks like the reported release of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. in July will not be happening. Apparently there is a dispute over who owns the rights between Warner Bros. and Anchor Bay.  WARNER claims that they own the rights and plan to release season sets, but not in 2006.

Dark Horse Comic's Conan  Series - Update on upcoming issues!
Timothy Truman has revealed that the Free Comic Book Day Conan story, "The Spear" serves as a sort of prelude for a King Conan story that he is doing with artist Paul Lee for Conan #35 and #36. These issues serve as a bit of an intermission, so Cary Nord can take a breather before launching into the epic adaptation and expansion of REH's "Rogues in the House". Truman reports that Paul Lee has already started turning in art for issue 35 and the art looks great. The artwork is a bit darker in tone than his previous Conan work.

Thanks to Tim Truman and the REH Comics Newsgroup for the information.

Doc Savage and The Shadow audio books
Marc Butler has completed an audio version of Doc Savage in "Birds of Death."
Marc Butler has also begun an audio version of the very first Shadow adventure,
"The Living Shadow."
These are amateur efforts, but Marc has attempted to do a decent job with voices and pacing.
Marc is also adding appropriate sound effects to enhance the experience.
The raw recording of all of the chapters of "The Living Shadow" are finished and Marc is now post- processing them, cleaning up the "uh's" and "oops" and things like that, plus adding in sound effects.

The first couple of chapters are available for download in MP3 format from Marc's website now.
Marc plans to average about a chapter a day uploading as post-processing is easier and faster than recording.

Gotham Pulp Collectors Club - Next meeting is June 10, 2006!
There is a new club for pulp collectors to meet in the NYC/Metro area.
It meets the 2nd Saturday of every month.

The Theme for the June meeting is western pulps.
What are your favorite western pulps?  Frontier, Dime Western, Western Story, Thrilling Western, what?
A few of us will bring their favorites for a little show and tell (including Ed Hulse, and you know how good THOSE pulps will look).   We'll talk about western pulps and, if you've a mind to, bring some pulps to trade (they don't have to be westerns).
Name:  Gotham Pulp Collectors Club
Time: 1-4 PM
Place: Hudson Park Library, 66 Leroy Street, Manhattan (West Village)

PULPCON 35 - August 3-6, 2006
PULPCON 35 will be held August 3-6, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio.
Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor
William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan.

Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey.

Pulpcon is introducing a new price structure for memberships, offering full memberships Thursday-Sunday (T-S), Friday-Sunday (F-S) and Saturday-Sunday (S-S). Dealers will be required to purchase T-S memberships.

Memberships arriving at the Pulpcon mailbox on or before May 13, 2006 are $20 (T-S) and $10 (S-S).
Memberships arriving in our box May 14th through July 15th are: $30 T-S, $20 F-S and $10 S-S.
Those arriving July 16th or later will be held for at-the-door registration: $40 (T-S), $20 (F-S) and $10 (S-S).

Watch the PULPCON website for the latest information as it becomes available.

The Pulp.Net - 10th anniversary online!
ThePulp.Net is celebrating its 10th anniversary online this year. To celebrate, they have posted several nifty gifts for you. They've created a Pulp.Stuff section where you can download pulp desktop images and icons, as well as order limited-edition t-shirts, bumper stickers and other swag if you wish.

So surf on over to http://thepulp.net and check out the celebration.
They will be updating the
Pulp.Stuff throughout the year.

This month, two new pulp wallpapers were added to the
Pulp.Stuff section at ThePulp.Net.
June's wallpapers are called “warning” and “sword."

Add them to your collection. ThePulp.Net will be replacing them in a month or two with two new ones.

Also, June 1 means its time for a new pulp T-shirt design.
June delivers the first of our pulp superlative series designs.
This one sports “I like my pulps... top-notch” on the back and a pulp hero and TPN logo on the front.

As a bonus, the black version of the May shirt design, “dime,” will be around a bit longer because of its popularity.
It features the “10 cent” art on the front, with the slogan “When your next adventure was just a dime away” printed in small white type around the art.
You'll find a link to it on the Pulp.Stuff page, too.
