CONAN
#24 - Preview now available online! Written by Kurt Busiek, art by Cary Nord, colored by Dave Stewart, cover by Tony Harris. Dark Horse Comics has posted a preview at http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=10-323 Eisner-award-nominated artist Cary Nord and Eisner-Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart return to Conan to launch a brand-new story arc by Kurt Busiek building up to the adaptation of Robert E. Howard's original Conan yarn, "The Hall of the Dead." Fresh from his triumphs in the City of Thieves with a willing, wanton wench at his side, Conan's out for the good life‹drinking, debauchery, and a nighttime looting spree so unrestrained that even the crowned heads of Zamora are displeased. All this attention-getting sets a rogue as wily as Conan on his tail, and if that wasn't enough, the Cimmerian's ways might just place him on the business end of an entire army. 32 pages, $2.99, in stores on January 18.

McFarland Publishing - Now available! Talbot Mundy, Philosopher of Adventure, A Critical Biography by Brian Taves This critical biography chronicles both the actual travels and the philosophical meanderings of Talbot Mundy, one of the pioneers of the fantasy and adventure genre. Less celebrated than his contemporaries Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, Mundy was no less gifted when it came to the literary portrayal of faraway lands. He was one of the first western writers to show an appreciation of eastern culture, and his writing became an outlet for his radical ideas on religion and philosophy. At the age of sixteen, Mundy left his native England to begin his life of adventure—a journey that took him from India to the Middle East to Tibet and finally to America, which became his adopted home. The American spirit of adventure matched Mundy’s own, and it was here that he found a true audience for his work. This book explores Mundy’s oeuvre—much of it set in exotic locales through which he himself had traveled—and considers both his novels and his lesser known writing, as well as his film and radio work. Books such as Rung Ho!, King-of the Khyber Rifles, Caves of Terror, Purple Pirate and Tros of Samothrace are discussed and placed within the framework of Mundy’s life and philosophy. The final chapter evaluates the enduring value of his writings. Appendices include a comprehensive list of Mundy’s works and a chronological listing by their original publication dates. photographs, notes, appendices, bibliography, index, 344 pages, softcover (7 x 10), $39.95 Visit the McFarland website to order.

Robert
E. Howard's home town, Cross Plains, Texas, ravaged by wildfires Robert E. Howard's home town, Cross Plains, Texas, was devastated by wildfires earlier this week. Over 7700 acres were burned and the latest count is that 116 homes were destroyed in and near the town and about 36 damaged. This is a town of approximately 1,000 people some 150 miles from Dallas. Most of the homes destroyed in Cross Plains were modest, working-class houses built during the 1930s and '40s. The fire spared a town landmark, the nearly century-old house (now a museum) of Robert E. Howard. The Boston Globe reports: http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2005/12/28/wind_driven_grass_fires_kill_one_in_texas/ New York Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/29/national/29fires.html?th&emc=th From Howard scholar Rusty Burke: A relief fund has been set up at the Texas Heritage Bank. Donations can be sent to: City of Cross Plains Fire Relief Fund c/o Texas Heritage Bank PO Box 699 Cross Plains, TX 76443 They can only accept cash and checks. Bill Cavalier, Official Editor of the Robert E Howard United Press Association (REHupa) has set up a PayPal account to accept donations but it won't be activated until early next week, so those of you who want to donate via PayPal (which also, of course, enables you to use a credit card) will have to wait until then. We'll be posting information at the REHupa website, http://www.rehupa.com. If you'd like them to know that the contribution is coming from an REH fan, you could just add a little note, or else you can send your donation to Bill for inclusion with those of other REH fans. You can also donate to the Red Cross: they do accept credit cards if you call them at (325) 677-2622. I hope that you will donate whatever you can, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to the relief efforts. Every little bit helps. And PLEASE -- spread this appeal to other REH fans! The needs are urgent and immediate. And, unfortunately, the weather conditions have not changed, so the danger of fire continues, at least through the weekend.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! | |
AGE OF THE STORYTELLERS
by Mike Ashley - Available January 1st! The years from 1880 to 1950 were the golden age of storytelling, seeing the creation of such famous fictional characters as Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu, Father Brown, Hercule Poirot, even Winnie the Pooh. This was the age of Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Buchan, A.E.W. Mason, Sapper, Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, Arnold Bennett and so many more. It was an age that coincided with the glory of the popular monthly illustrated magazine, typified by The Strand, which set the standard for popular fiction with the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Strand soon encouraged rivals and imitators such as Pearson's Magazine, The Windsor, The Royal, Pall Mall, The Idler and many more. This is the first reference guide to consider these magazines in detail, providing coverage of 144 titles, seventy in full-length entries, charting their contribution to and influence upon popular literature. There are illustrations reproducing covers and features from every magazine, with 72 color images, including many magazines that are now extremely rare. In addition to much new information this book also considers the collecting significance of these titles and will be of importance to collectors and bookdealers as well as literary researchers and bibliophiles. The publisher is Oak Knoll Press and The British Library 9.5 x 7.5 inches cloth, dust jacket 320 pages with 72 color and 60 b/w illustrations, $95.00 This title can be ordered from Amazon.com.uk

G.G. Pendarves: THING OF DARKNESS -
Now available! THING OF DARKNESS by G.G. Pendarves, Edited by Mike Ashley Casebound - $45.00 G.G. Pendarves (Gladys Trenery) was one of the most respected writers for WEIRD TALES during the magazine's glory years of the late 1920s and early 1930s. One of the few British authors to achieve great popularity with readers of "The Unique Magazine", Pendarves had two of her tales reprinted twice in the pages of the magazine. As an author who incorporated the colorful atmosphere of her native Cornwall into her Jamesian tales of ancient dooms and ancestral haunts, Pendarves brings a disturbing verisimilitude to her ghostly tales. This is the first of two volumes collecting all of her weird fiction. Mike Ashley is one of the foremost authorities on fantastic and weird fiction with dozens of anthologies and single-author collections to his credit. Recent projects include the definitive biography of Algernon Blackwood and numerous anthologies. Mike is currently at work preparing the definitive index of fiction magazines for the British Library. As G.G. Pendarves is without a doubt one of the most important WEIRD TALES authors to remain uncollected until now. This is a limited edition. Order now to avoid possible disappointment. Darkside Press has confirmed a shipping date of 12/15/05 and anticipates copies shipping just before Christmas. $45.00 the copy. This title is now available from Darkside Press.

Lone Ranger comic book series Dynamite Entertainment has confirmed that the new Lone Ranger series will be written by Brett (Serenity) Matthews, and art directed by John Cassaday. "We've been working on this for quite a while, because we have to get this just right," explained Dynamite Spokesperson J. Allen in a statement. "After all, The Lone Ranger is the archetype of the modern superhero, he is the definition of 'Americana,' a crusader for truth, justice and the American way. With all that in mind, our series has to be both faithful to the true essence of the character while creating exciting new situations for him, and we've found two guys to do just that." Allen noted that Cassaday will not be the series artist, but will be providing design work and will oversee all the art for the interiors by the yet to be named series artist, and will be the only cover artist for the series.
Matthew Reilly: Seven Deadly Wonders
- Available in bookstores December 2005! In ancient times, a Golden Capstone was placed atop the Great Pyramid at Giza during a rare solar event called the Tartarus Rotation. Once every 4,500 years, a superhot sunspot -- the Tartarus Sunspot -- aligned itself with Earth and caused immense worldwide flooding and sun-scorching. It is said that when the Capstone sat atop the Great Pyramid, no such flooding or solar damage occurred. And, according to legend, whosoever places the Capstone on the pyramid at the next Tartarus Rotation will gain absolute power over Earth for the next 1,000 years. In 2006, the Tartarus Rotation will come again, but the Capstone is nowhere to be found. With the fate of global dominance hanging in the balance, nearly every world power sends forth its troops to locate the Capstone. Among them are the United States, the European Union, Israel, ruthless terrorists, and one other unusual force: a coalition of seven smaller nations that have decided that the Capstone is too powerful for any one country to hold. So they band together against all odds and send an eight-man team to take on all the great forces in the chase. Led by an Australian super-soldier named Jack West Jr., the team includes a Canadian professor, two crack Irish commandos (one of whom is female), a Spanish paratrooper, a Jamaican soldier, an Arab commando, and a daredevil New Zealand pilot. And with them always is a little girl named Lily, the ten-year-old daughter of the Oracle of Siwa -- one of only two people in the world who can decode an ancient text that leads to the Capstone. This stalwart group embarks on a global journey filled with booby-trapped mines, stupendous ancient wonders, gigantic evil forces, and adventure beyond imagination. From the Colossus of Rhodes to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, from the Lighthouse at Alexandria to the Great Pyramid itself, fasten your seatbelts and hang on as the author of Ice Station and Scarecrow takes you on the adventure of your life! Captain
Hazzard From an interview with Ron Fortier at Silver Bullet.com: I recently resurrected the classic pulp hero Captain Hazzard, who only appeared in his own magazine once and then disappeared. That adventure was called PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY. My plans are to bring Hazzard back in both pulps and comics. To do this I've rewritten Python Men, and it will be published by Wild Cat Books early next year. A few short months later, Wild Cat Books will publish CITADEL OF FEAR, the first new Captain Hazzard adventure in 67 years, as written by yours truly and writer Martin Powell. It's a series we hope to keep running as long as the fans want more. Meanwhile, at the same time Powell and I are producing the new pulp adventures, writer Chris Mills and I are launching a brand new Captain Hazzard comic books series. Our first entry in this venture is a 3 issue mini-series adaptation of Python Men. The art is by newcomers Craig Shepard and Sean Tenhoff. The idea each venue will cross-advertise the other. By the end of 2006 it is my hope to make Captain Hazzard a household name.

- Dark Horse Comics announces a new writer! Dark Horse Comics is pleased to announce that after a short stint with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola writing the monthly Conan series, Timothy Truman takes over as the regular writer on the series, as of issue #33. Current Conan writer Kurt Busiek has decided to amicably move on from the title to pursue other ventures after an award-winning run of over two years on the title. Mignola’s short run on the title came about when editor Scott Allie was seeking out Busiek’s replacement. Mignola suggested a bizarre and haunting adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s “The Hall of the Dead”—as well as encouraging Dark Horse to hire Truman as the permanent replacement. “Truman really has the same sensibilities as Howard,” commented Mignola. “His stuff has that gritty, tough, action-adventure feel, but he also knows the bigger-than-life pulp-era monster stuff that comes from the old-fashioned supernatural literature. You can tell he learned that from reading writers like Howard as opposed to from reading superheroes.” Busiek agrees. “I’m absolutely thrilled that Dark Horse got Tim Truman for Conan,” said the former Conan scribe. “And I’m not just saying that because I suggested him. I’ve been a fan of Tim’s work since he did Scout, way back in the Pleistocene Era, and I think he’s terrific at rough heroics in a brutal, corrupt, decadent world, which suits Conan beautifully. Heck, if it had been a choice between Tim and me, back when Dark Horse started the series, I’d have picked Tim.” Cary Nord will continue as the artist for the series. “It was great to work with a writer of Kurt’s caliber”, enthused Nord. “It gave me an amazing opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business. I look forward to working with Tim Truman. I guarantee we’ll keep up the excitement and intensity in the next chapter of Conan’s life.”

Robert Silverberg - In the
Beginning The sf Grandmaster's follow up to the career retrospective PHASES OF THE MOON is a glance back to the earliest days of his career. Included with pulp stories not reprinted in decades will be more of the commentary that made PHASES so much more than just a collection. "I have to confess, right up front here, that you will not find a great deal in the way of poetic vision in these stories, or singing prose, or deep insight into character. Nor are these stories that will tell you much that is new to you about the human condition. These are stories in what is now pretty much a lost tradition in science fiction, the simple and unselfconsciously fast-paced adventure story of the pulp-magazine era. They are stories from the dawn of my career, which began in the closing years of that era, and are straightforward tales of action, in the main, that were written partly for fun and partly for money." --Robert Silverberg, from the Introduction Limited: 1000 signed numbered hardcover copies - $40 Lettered: 26 signed traycased copies, bound in leather - $150 Table of Contents: Yokel with Portfolio (1955) Long Live the Kejwa (1956) Guardian of the Crystal Gate (1956) Choke Chain (1956) Citadel of Darkness (1957) Cosmic Kill (1957) New Year's Eve--2000 A.D. Tarzan
Musical A former "American Idol" contestant who didn't make the finals of the television talent show will play Tarzan in a new musical of the classic jungle story on Broadway next year. The producers of "Tarzan" said on Thursday Josh Strickland, who was a contestant on the second season of the hit show on the Fox television network, would play the lead in the musical which is due to open in May with music by Phil Collins. Earlier this year the producers of "Tarzan" held open casting calls for the lead, saying they were looking for somebody "charming, sexy, vulnerable, animal-like, mysterious and ... toned, like a swimmer." The musical has been adapted from the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "Tarzan of the Apes" and the 1999 Disney film with music by the former Genesis drummer Collins.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP &
PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006 The Windy City website has been updated to add initial info on next year's show. IMPORTANT NOTE – In mid-June, the hotel we’d used in April 2005 and had booked for April 2006, the Ramada Plaza O’Hare, informed us they’d been sold and were demolishing their convention facilities in late 2005. We were fortunate enough to reach a deal with the Wyndham O’Hare (in many respects a nicer hotel) – which is right next to the Ramada – to take the con in 2006, but the only weekend they could accommodate us for 2006 was May 5-7. So, both the hotel and dates have changed if you pre-registered at the past Windy City Pulp & PB Con! This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, and in connecion with that anniversary, we're planning a number of special Shadow displays and events. Please check the website for details as they're available. Click here to download the pre-registration form. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $30 for all three days, $20 for Friday only, $20 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only. Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com). If you register before April 1, 2006, your membership badge will be mailed to you, allowing you to by-pass the registration line and pick up your program book and other materials at your convenience. DEALER INFO: Dealer setup begins Friday at 10am – the dealer room is open to the public from 2-6 pm Friday, 9 am-5 pm Saturday and 9 am-4pm Sunday. There is no access to the room on Thursday. For dealers, tables are 6’ long. Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs. Wall tables are $75, island tables are $65 and half island tables are $35. Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a membership. AUCTION: The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm. If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com. ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the second year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustration-magazine.com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. There will be one session Friday (beginning at 8 pm) and one session Saturday (following the auction). More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (http://www.geocities.com/poppub/). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $60 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $35 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $20 (3.25" x 2"). The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2006. Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment). CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby. WEBSITE: The con’s website is http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com. We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the show, so please check it for the most recent information. HOTEL INFO: The Wyndham is only minutes from O’Hare airport (the hotel operates a free shuttle service which runs approximately every 20 minutes – and from the east, you can now circle around the city, rather than go through; from other directions, you don’t have to go through the city). The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel). One car per room parks free of charge; otherwise there’s a parking charge of $6.00 (no in and out privileges). Please make sure to mention the convention when booking hotel rooms. Thanks! Click here to download the pre-registration form. Captain Hazzard - PYTHON
MEN OF THE LOST CITY Chapters 1 thru 16 are now available! Ron Fortier has revived the pulp hero CAPTAIN HAZZARD and is bringing him back for the fans to enjoy. He has completely rewritten the one and only CAPTAIN HAZZARD pulp story, PYTHON MEN OF LOST CITY. The first chapter of the story is now available online at the Modern Pulp website with illustrations by Rob Davis. This story will run as a weekly serial for the next fifteen weeks, with new chapters being posted every Sunday. After all fifteen chapters have been posted, they will be collected into a trade paperback available from Wild Cat Books. Then what will follow is a brand new series of Captain Hazzard adventures by Ron and veteran comic-scribe, Martin Powell. At the same time, Chris Mills and Ron have a three part comic mini-series based on PYTHON MEN in the works. Craig Shepard is the penciller for the project and he is embellished by inker Sean Tenoff. Both are newcomers to the field and have tremendous potential. Shepard's pencils are delicate in the tradition of Tom Yeates and Gene Colan, whereas Tenoff's inks are smooth and true to those pencils. Rounding the team will be Digital Caps own Jaymes as our letterer and Bishop Bowie of Graphic Balance as our colorist. Chris Mills will also take on editing and design duties. The idea is to bring back the character two-fold, both in pulps where he was sired, and in comics, in all new stories. A Captain Hazzard cover mockup is shown at the right.

THE
LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN Classic Media and Dynamite Entertainment are proud to announce a new ongoing comic book series featuring the Lone Ranger. The new Dynamite comics will feature the Lone Ranger, Tonto and more characters from the venerable franchise. The agreement also allows Dynamite to repackage and publish previous Lone Ranger comics material. "To be able to include such a powerful, iconic character to our growing stable of comic book projects is an honor beyond words," explained Dynamite Spokesperson J. Allen. "We've talked with two big-name creators now about this project, and hope to announce their involvement in a few short weeks. Once the script and first cover are in, we will solicit. We're taking the character back down to his roots, and giving fans their first look at an incredible hero. When you think about it, he is the original masked man! Truly, the first super-hero!" The first of 2,956 episodes of The Lone Ranger aired on radio for the first time on January 30, 1933 on WXYZ radio in Detroit, Michigan and later on the Mutual Broadcasting System radio network. The Lone Ranger became one of the most successful properties on radio. The radio series also inspired numerous comic books, two movie serials, books, a live action television series (1949-1957) best known for starring Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as Tonto, and a Saturday morning animated cartoon. The last time the character appeared on-screen as a major motion picture was in 1981's Legend of the Lone Ranger. The first issue will be scheduled for release as the series is further along.

Robert E. Howard Birthday
Celebration - Fort Worth, Texas, January 21, 2006! Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 21 (the day before REH's birthday). On that day, on the beautiful west side of Fort Worth, just down from the art museums, a Celebration of the 100th birthday of REH will be held at the Black Dog Tavern. Lots of different beers to choose from, darn few lectures, and an open mic where various folks (including YOU if I recognize you coming in the door) will be reading bits and pieces of REH material, including letters, poems and snippets from stories. The emphasis will be on introducing folks to the range of REH's work, as well as his love of Texas. I'd expect there to be around 2 hours of material to work through. Folks can either bring in what THEY would like to read, or I will have several set pieces that I'll be looking for volunteers to read. The owner is VERY excited to get the chance to do this. While they host lots of different live bands through the week, from jazz to heavy metal, they have a regular Thursday night poetry open mic, so this is right up their alley. He's already lining up the local papers and literati, and discussing posters (Dave: NO, I won't save you one, unless you could down here and get it), and I've got someone here that knows how to work the Dallas side. We'd obviously like as many REH fans and scholars as possible to show up as we can get. I'd shore like to get Mark Finn to come on up, either by himself or bring the troupe and do a live one. Hopefully James Reasoner, the Baums, Glenn sounded VERY interested when I mentioned it to him. Me, Romeo, Ethan, whoever else we can get here. Need to figure out the weight to DHL Rusty here. I'm already working on some basic handouts and some neat giveaways. So come on, here's your chance to perform in front of a drunk audience (well, outside a frat house, I mean, and not involving animals (sorry Gary)), and maybe hear some things you didn't know. More details to come as they become available. Please spread this around to all the usual places and suspects, if you would please. Thanks. Paul Herman

The coupon code for this is: HOLIDAY25 In other news: WINGS IN THE NIGHT, the fourth volume in our planned ten-volume set of THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD is now available! This latest volume collects Robert E. Howard's fiction and prose published in WEIRD TALES from July 1932 to May 1933. These works represent literary stepping-stones to Howard's infamous Cthulhu mythos stories and his most famous character of all -- Conan the Cimmerian -- and ably demonstrate that each of Howard's stories improved and added to his formidable skills as a master of fantasy and adventure. WINGS IN THE NIGHT includes "Phoenix on the Sword," the historically important first Conan story, establishing the very unique character of Conan, and sets in place the history and many of the attributes of the Hyborian Age, from which all the later stories would flow. Includes two more Conan stories: "The Scarlet Citadel" and "The Tower of the Elephant!" Cover by Stephen Fabian. Wildside Press's first three titles going out nationally through Diamond Distribution are now available! Included are three thousand copies each of the first volume of THE WEIRD WORKS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD: SHADOW KINGDOMS, by Robert E. Howard; NO ONE NOTICED THE CAT, by Anne McCaffrey; and TOAST, by Charles Stross. Forthcoming Wildside / Prime / Cosmos titles include books by Neal Asher, Paul Di Filippo, Theodora Goss, Robert E. Howard, Anne McCaffrey, Clark Ashton Smith, Jeff VanderMeer, Lawrence Watt-Evans, and many more! Holiday Cheers, The Wildside Press staff
