Conde Nast - Doc Savage and The Shadow websites close down!
Last week I reported that the law firm of Sabin, Bermant & Gould LLP representing Conde Nast has been sending out email letters to people with Doc Savage and Shadow web sites asking them to remove all copyrighted and trademarked material from their websites.  This includes etexts, pulps covers, comic book covers, etc.

Since last week, several websites have confirmed receiving a formal letter via the U.S. mail asking them to remove all copyrighted and trademarked material from their websites.  Numerous websites are now down. A partial listing follows:

Conde Nast - Girasol Collectables Shadow Pulp Replicas End!
Girasol Collectables Inc. regrets to announce that our Shadow Replicas will no longer be available. We have received notice from a law firm stating that we are in violation of copyright. We were producing Shadow Replicas under the understanding that the original magazines were not covered by the copyright held by Conde Nast on the Shadow character but apparently we were mistaken.  Girasol ceased selling the Shadow Replicas immediately but will, of course, still be offering other Replica titles on an ongoing basis.

Next week I will have details on the three new Pulp Replicas for February.

Conde Nast - Possible Plans for The Shadow?
Howard (GOLDEN PERILS) Hopkins has spoken with three individuals that had direct communication with a lawyer from Sabin, Bermant & Gould LLP representing Conde Nast.  The lawyer said major things are in the works for The Shadow, including a new movie and what appears to be a reprinting of the original pulps, possibly as some sort of facsimile versions. There are also a number of other things in the works, including streaming online (sanctioned) Shadow radio programs. Conde Nast says it does not want to sue anyone and they support the fan sites.  They just don't want PDF versions, etexts, and things online that may potentially harm these deals.
E-texts on the net this week
The Shadow Magazine
Voodoo Death is reviewed this week.
Death of a Brother-In-Law by Jonathan Blade is this week's Two-Minute Shadow Mystery.

Robert Mullen's Shadow PDF and The Shadow Magazine Interior Artwork:
Both sites are now down after receipt of a letter from Conde Nast.

ShadowPDF:   The ShadowPDF site has received a letter from Conde Nast. As a result, in the next couple of weeks the ShadowPDF will be changing.  Copyrighted material will be coming down. Non-Shadow material will  remain for your enjoyment.  ShadowPDF still hopes to finish posting the Amazon Anne saga and to transform the site into something about The Shadow that is not objectionable to Conde Nast.

Doc Savage PDF
The Doc Savage PDF site has received a letter from Conde Nast.  All etexts have been removed from the site.

The Shrevnitz Memorial Library:

H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror
The first issue of H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror is being redated from Spring 2004 to Summer 2004 due to distribution problems.  Warren Lapine is in the middle of moving all of DNA Publication's magazines from one distributor to another -- from IPD to Ingram -- and H.P. Lovecraft's Magazine of Horror is caught in the middle.

However, 10,000 copies are being printed in February for a special promotion.  Everyone who subscribed will get one of those advance copies. (They will be slightly different from the newsstand copies -- no bar code -- so you'll see more of Bob Eggleton's fantastic cover art.)  Bob is also doing the cover for #3. Steve Hickman is doing the cover for #2.  Click here for a look at upcoming material for future issues.

Hugh B.Cave
There is a four-page interview with Hugh B. Cave (liberally sprinkled with black&white reproductions of magazine covers) in the current issue of Filmfax Plus magazine.  Filmfax Plus magazine is available at Barnes & Noble and Borders bookstores.  Thanks to Paul Dellinger for this news item.
Indiana Jones 4
According to Variety, Screenwriter Frank Darabont [“The Green Mile”] has completed the script. "I've finished my work, so now it's in the hands of God, or Spielberg and Lucas if you prefer," said Darabont. According to the trade, the film should go before the cameras this year with star Harrison Ford, Director Steven Spielberg and George Lucas Executive Producing.
John Carter, Warlord of Mars
Paramount Pictures optioned the entire, eleven volume, Edgar Rice Burroughs series for $300,000 back in 2002. Rumor now has it that an offer is out to Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS) to direct.
King Kong
E! News Daily interviewed Naomi Watts and director Peter Jackson at the BAFTA/LA luncheon last Saturday, and Watts confirmed she is set to star in Universal's King Kong.  "I will sit in the hand of King Kong," she said laughing and referring to the Ann Darrow role. She also mentioned that she'll start filming in August for a December 14, 2005 release.  Jackson added that he wants "to approach King Kong as a drama, not as a fantasy, not as anything other than a straight drama and explore what would really happen in that situation and I think would be interesting."

LOVECRAFT - Available February 4th!
LOVECRAFT is an original hardcover graphic novel from DC Comics pairing the writing talents of screenwriter Hans Rodionoff and comics writer Keith Giffen with the exquisite painted art of Enrique Breccia.

The Necronomicon.  Cthulhu.  A town called Arkham populated by bizarre and insane monstrosities.  These icons of horror were envisioned by one man: Howard Philips Lovecraft.  But were these visions of horror only in his mind, or could he see into a world that couldn't be seen?

From his bizarre childhood, when his mother would dress him as a girl, to his adult days, when he would meet Harry Houdini, Lovecraft was haunted by grotesque visions.  He dedicated his life to writing blood-boiling "fictional" tales, all in an attempt to appease his living nightmares.  But that obsession would take its toll.  His parents both sent to asylums and his loving wife driven away, Lovecraft would spend most of his life as a recluse, his only company being his demons and the occasional visit to his publisher.  Some called him insane.  Some called him a genius.  Either way, the story of America's greatest horror writer is a tale as haunting as the demons that plagued him.

LOVECRAFT is written by Hans Rodionoff; adapted by Keith Giffen; art and cover by Enrique Breccia.
144 pages, $24.95, in comic shops on February 4, 2004.

Mystery*File - #41 is now available!
Steve Lewis has revived his fanzine, MYSTERY*FILE.
MYSTERY*FILE consists of reviews of mysteries and detective novels, of commentary on mystery and crime fiction, of checklists and matters of bibliographic interest, and of letters.  MYSTERY*FILE is a "print" magazine only.  None of the material in it will appear on-line.  The Internet has revolutionized the world, but there's still nothing like the feel of paper in your hands and the thrill of seeing printed words on the page.

The primary focus of MYSTERY*FILE is not to be an up-to-date newsletter for the field, but a place where old and new works co-exist, where older mysteries can be brought up and discussed as well as those by the most recent hot authors, and where the careers of writers can be looked at in perspective.  MYSTERY*FILE is for those fans who love to read and talk about mysteries and series characters, and those who love to make checklists and those who love to have them, and if you can assist in  accomplishing any of these goals, then so much the better.

The efforts of a number of people helped produce each issue, and they'd appreciate your comments, both on their work and on the books and the movies they talk about.  Letters are not only accepted for publication, they are requested, if not demanded.

MYSTERY*FILE #41 is now available.

Star Wars: Clone Wars - New Episodes!
Cartoon Network has announced that chapters 11-20 of Star Wars: Clone Wars will air at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) from Friday, March 26 to Thursday, April 8.
Star Wars on DVD - Coming October or November of 2004!
The Rebel Scum fan website is reporting that in recent presentations at London's Toy Fair event, Lucasfilm marketing partner TLC Marketing revealed once again that Lucasfilm plans to release Episodes 4, 5 and 6 on DVD format in October or November of 2004.

Rumor is that they'll be released as a 4-disc set, with 3 movie discs (1 for each film) and a disc of bonus materials, much like last year's Indiana Jones Trilogy DVD release. Lucas has repeatedly said not to expect the original versions of the films on DVD, so it is anticipated that the release will be much-rumored "Archive Editions", which would basically be the Special Editions released in the 1990s, only with further tweaks, changes, enhancements and additions to bring them more into line with the new prequels. An official announcement is expected by May.

THE EFFICIENCY EXPERT by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Jimmy Torrance graduated from college without a hope -- he'd spent his hours at the university learning how to box, how to swim, how the hit a baseball and lead a football team. He set out for Chicago with all the enthusiastic eagerness of a man who knows in his heart of heart, that he's on the winning team. But Chicago wasn't Ivy-league college football, a there was no team to captain: What Jimmy found in Chicago was a tough life in a tough place at a miserable wage. He found the decency of folks any ordinary fellow would have branded criminals, and he found the criminality of upstanding citizens who surrounded him. He found a whore with a heart of gold, and a safe-cracker who was also a man a body could rely on. And most important of all, in that freakish, frightful burg, Jimmy found a thing called love. . . .

WINGS OVER THE WORLD By Tom Quinn - Now Available!
Tales from the Golden Age of Air Travel. Air travel in the 1930s was a glorious adventure reserved only for the well-heeled traveler. To fly to Africa on an Empire "flying boat" was a five-day aerial voyage via lakes that had to be cleared of hippos before touchdown. On a wartime Boeing flying boat crossing the Atlantic, the navigator plotted his course by the stars.

This is a unique portrait of the early decades of British civil aviation as seen through the eyes of the men and women who knew it best. Ten veterans of this golden age of flying--pilots, navigators, stewardesses and station commanders--reminisce about the early days of air travel: silver-service meals above the African bush, booming radial engines, terrible turbulence and true seat-of-the-pants flying.

Abundantly illustrated with over 150 period posters, archive photos, and memorabilia, this is a wonderful work of nostalgia and a priceless piece of social history told by those who experienced it firsthand. Aurum, 2003.
Hard Cover, 8x10, 186 pages, $29.95.

Battlestar Galactica
Cinescape Online has scooped the news that the Sci-Fi Channel has given Battlestar Galactica a six episode commitment. According to this Vancouver-based source, the  Sci-Fi Channel has given the producers of the new GALACTICA a six-episode commitment. It just hasn't been officially announced yet.

Debuting to strong ratings, last month's broadcast of the two-part, four-hour BATTLESTAR GALACTICA mini-series earned the Sci Fi Channel its third highest ratings ever for a program. The second night of GALACTICA grabbed a larger share of the audience than the first night. Usually this kind of good news would be enough to launch the program into a full-fledged series but the show's high cost per episode is contributing to cold feet by Sci-Fi Channel suits. It's expected that all of the primary cast members from the mini-series will re-appear in the series version of GALACTICA.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #6 - Delayed due to health problems!
BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #6 was delayed due to health problems, but will hopefully be available later this month.

Acknowledging that this year marks the 70th birthday of many notable pulp heroes (including Doc Savage, The Spider, G-8, The Phantom Detective, Nick Carter, and Pete Rice), BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #6 pays tribute to the great single-character magazines of yore.  In "Last Hurrahs," Mark Trost and Ed Hulse revisit the waning days of the classic hero titles, analyzing the final issues and commenting on the characters' evolutions (or lack of same). Noted pulp historian and novelist Will Murray makes his first appearance in BnT with "Dithering Over Doc," a slightly expanded version of his PEAPS article postulating that Doc Savage, Pete Rice, and the reconstituted Nick Carter might have been intended to make their pulp-page debuts the year before they actually did. Speaking of Nick, his dime-novel incarnation was believed by many readers to be a real person; this according to his creator, John Coryell, who reminisces about the Great Detective in an article we're reprinting from a 1918 issue of DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE. Our latest installment of "Tricks of the Trade" features a 1935 interview with Thrilling Group editor-in-chief Leo Marguiles—an interview conducted by Mort Weisinger, the SF fan who would become one of Leo's proteges in just a few years! And "Cliffhanger Classics" spotlights THE JUNGLE GODDESS, a phenomenally popular silent serial inspired by the stories of H. Rider Haggard and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Chronicles of Conan Volume 3 - Available January 28th!
CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOLUME 3: THE MONSTER OF THE MONOLITHS AND OTHER STORIES  will be available in comic shops on January 28th.  This is the third volume in a series collecting the early Conan comic-book stories by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith. Originally created in the 1930s, Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian has survived to emerge as one of this century’s most powerful and popular characters. Even more impressive than the character’s lasting appeal over the past seven decades, is the caliber of talent involved in all of the various Conan incarnations. Of those, there are few that speak as clearly and as uniquely as artist Barry Windsor-Smith. Over the course of these early stories, Windsor-Smith’s stunning evolution from comic-book cartoonist to full-fledged artist is apparent and thrilling to behold. This volume collects issues #14, #15, and #17-#21 and features completely remastered color.

Soft cover, 156 pages, Full color, $15.95.

CONAN COLLECTOR PIN #3: CONAN #242 COVER ART
A snarling Conan the Barbarian, bearing his full weight and battlelust down on an equally powerful and just-as-annoyed Red Sonja! Kids, kids! Rent a room, already! Comic art icon Jim Lee creates this classic "battle of the sexes" for Marvel's Conan comic, and now it's a wearable piece of artwork! A full color metal pin, measuring 1.25 x 2 inches, and limited to just 2,500 pieces. The retail price is $9.95.

CONAN COLLECTOR PIN #3 is solicited in the February PREVIEWS (available January 28th).

Conde Nast
It appears that Conde Nast has hired the law firm of Sabin, Bermant & Gould LLP to send out email letters to people with Doc Savage and Shadow web sites asking them to remove all copyrighted and trademarked material from their websites.  This includes etexts, pulps covers, comic book covers, etc.  At least four websites that I am aware of have received such an email.
Dark Shadows
The WB is bringing back another attempt at a "Dark Shadows" remake. John Wells (Third Watch, The West Wing) is producing, creator Dan Curtis is signed on, and Smallville writer/producer Mark Verheiden is writing the series pilot.  Some casting details have leaked for the WB's upcoming remake of the gothic vampire series and are up at BarnabusUndead. Darkside Press - PRELUDE TO ARMAGEDDON by Cleve Cartmill
Heinlein, Simak, Hubbard, de Camp, Cartmill... These are the foundations upon which John W. Campbell built the Golden Age in ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION and UNKNOWN WORLDS. All of these authors have had much of their fiction collected and are well-known to today's readers. Cleve Cartmill has been remembered primarily for his notoriously prescient atomic bomb story, Deadline, which brought Federal Agents swooping down on Campbell's offices worried that there had been a leak at the Manhattan Project. Cleve Cartmill was far, far more than merely the author of this one well-known tale; his fantasy novellas rank among some of the best to have been published in UNKNOWN and his science fiction still holds up well today some sixty years later. This is the first of a projected set of five volumes that will collect all of Cartmill's superlative fiction in a matched set. The trade edition will be $40.
This collection is strictly limited to only 500 copies and features an introduction from award winning author/editor John Pelan and a striking cover by Allen Koszowki. The book is anticipated to begin shipping in late September.
Visit the Darkside Press website to pre-order this book today.

PRELUDE TO ARMAGEDDON can also be pre-ordered from Mike Chomko.
Orders over $30 are discounted 10% and shipped postpaid.

The Goon
Alan Hardy has recommended a fairly new comic book series to me as one that has a modern, but "pulpy" feel to it.  The comic is THE GOON and it is published by Dark Horse Comics.  Dark Horse describes this series as a hilarious blend of pulpy horror and slapstick comedy following the ongoing misadventures of the man they call the Goon and his spastic sidekick Franky as they battle the legions of the undead!  THE GOON is available in comic shops for $2.99.  THE GOON can also be ordered online at http://www.darkhorse.com/comics/title.php.  The most recent issue is #4.

Dark Horse has a free online issue of THE GOON #1 available for reading on their website at http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=12-592.

Thanks to Alan Hardy for the recommendation.

Haffner Press
CEMETERY DANCE MAGAZINE #47 (now available) contains a four page interview with Haffner Press founder and publisher Stephen Haffner.  The interview covers Haffner's background as a publisher and the books published by Haffner Press to date.  Of particular interest are the future plans of Haffner Press

Dzienianowicz and Robert Morrish (Cemetery Dance), Fantasy Press-esque books collecting the Hollywood on the Moon series and the "Pete Manx" time traveling farces, and Kuttner's latter day mystery novels including Man Drowning.

The Collected Stories of Jack Williamson is currently projected at eight volumes (and growing).
There will be two more Leigh Brackett collections.

Stephen Haffner and Richard A. Hauptmann, Jack Williamson's bibliographer, have been working for the better part of three years on Seventy-Five: The Diamond Anniversary of a Science Fiction Pioneer - Jack Williamson.

No anthology gives a better feel for or a more consistently higher caliber of golden age story telling in the genre. Each story has a color in its title, hence the anthology title, RAINBOWFANTASIA.

King Conan
IGN Filmforce  are reporting another blow to the anticipated "King Conan" with news that Larry and Andy Wachowski Have left the project. According to the site, they would have produced the film, which John Milius is onboard to write and direct. Sources informed the site that "..The Wachowskis - who had reportedly clashed with Milius over the tone and direction of the film - left King Conan of their own volition. The project had remained stalled in development hell while the Wachowskis completed their Matrix trilogy. The future of King Conan is now up in the air. Whether Warner Brothers will continue to develop it or if they will allow their option to lapse instead remains to be seen. No word yet on who might replace the Wachowskis as producer should Warners choose to stick with Conan."

John Milius is reportedly still intent on getting the project off the ground, and that's even without original star Arnold Schwarzenegger. The most recent name branded about for the part of the older Conan is wrestler Triple H.

THE MEMOIRS OF HORATIO HUMBERTON by J. Paul Suter, introduction by Robert Weinberg
A total of ten adventure novelettes appeared in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE between July 1932 and January 1937 featuring the Necrologist Sleuth, Horatio Humberton. These stories feature elements of the supernatural, and the outrageous, and are collected here for the first time. Unfortunately only one featured a cover illustration for the magazine. You will not be disappointed with these hard-boiled escapades, bordering on humorous escapist detective fiction.  The ten stories are:  The Angel of the Damned, Eyes of the Dead, The Werewolf Horrors, The Mill of Horror, Seconds of Doom, Shoes for the Dead, Post Mortem, Dead and Buried, The Hairy Death, and The Corpse the Cat Dragged In.

Writing in THE DIME DETECTIVES (The Mysterious Press, 1988), Ron Goulart said: "Horatio Humberton...was a part-time dick and a full-time undertaker. 'Though Horatio Humberton earned the principal part of his living by the
direction of funerals," it was explained "another science, the study of crime, was much nearer his heart. When it came to embalming a murdered man, he could do a good job; but he would be far more enthusiastic in the task of
finding the murderer."  The retail price of this 386-page book will be $50.

THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE DEAN by Merle Constiner, introduction by Robert Weinberg
The Dean operates a fortune-telling business in a disreputable part of town. He is assisted in his adventures by Benton Matthews, a specialist in locks and guns. He also has the ear of Captain Kunkle, and grudgingly, the assistance of Lieutenant Malloy of the police department. Clients arrive with outrageous problems which generally lead to brilliant solutions. These nineteen unusual and unique stories will be published in THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF THE DEAN, by Merle Constiner and introduced by Robert Weinberg. They were originally published in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE from August 1940 through December 1945. A folio-sized hardcover, this "Lost Treasure from the Pulps" will retail for $75.

THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT by Frederick C. Davis, introduction by Robert Weinberg
Bill Brent works for a newspaper, and as punishment he is assigned the "Lorna Lorne's Lost Lover's Advice Column" by his editor. However, inquiries for advise addressed to Lorna often result in misadventures, murder, and mayhem. The fifteen stories to be published in THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT, by Frederick C. Davis, introduced by Robert Weinberg, were originally published in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE from May 1941 through June 1946. A folio-sized hardcover, this "Lost Treasure from the Pulps" will retail for $75.

Several new titles have been added to the LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS series for later in 2004.
Coming up are:  THE COMPLEAT MOON MAN by Frederick C. Davis - which will include all of the Moon Man stories ever published  and THE MAGICAL MYSTERIES OF DON DIAVOLO by Clayton Rawson - authorized by the Rawson estate, this volume will include the four very scarce Don Diavolo novels from the pulps as well as Rawson's five other pulp detective short stories.  Making it a true collector's item, BSDB hopes to have a new introduction for the book by Clayton Rawson's son.

Mike Chomko is now accepting pre-orders for all three of these volumes.

This issue really cranks up the noir, as it dives deep into Kolchak's very soul. He begged Tony for a nice, normal lead, and that's what he got. Seems an Air Force base in upstate New York's engaged in a little cover up, so our man Carl Kolchak high-tails it cross country in a fresh pressed suit and a smile on his face. Using his singular reporting skills, and his annoying interpersonal skills, he gets all the answers allright. Too bad these answers may send him straight to an insane asylum. How cruel is Man? Wanna find out? Carl did, and would love to lay it out for you. Right here. Right now.

THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT by Edgar Rice Burroughs
I am forced to admit that even though I had traveled a long distance to place Bowen Tyler's manuscript in the hands of his father, I was still a trifle skeptical as to its sincerity, since I could not but recall that it had not been many years since Bowen had been one of the most notorious practical jokers of his alma mater. The truth was that as I sat in the Tyler library at Santa Monica I commenced to feel a trifle foolish and to wish that I had merely forwarded the manuscript by express instead of bearing it personally, for I confess that I do not enjoy being laughed at. I have a well-developed sense of humor -- when the joke is not on me.

Mr. Tyler, Sr., was expected almost hourly. The last steamer in from Honolulu had brought information of the date of the expected sailing of his yacht Toreador, which was now twenty-four hours overdue. Mr. Tyler's assistant secretary, who had been left at home, assured me that there was no doubt but that the Toreador had sailed as promised, since he knew his employer well enough to be positive that nothing short of an act of God would prevent his doing what he had planned to do. I was also aware of the fact that the sending apparatus of the Toreador's wireless equipment was sealed, and that it would only be used in event of dire necessity. There was, therefore, nothing to do but wait . . .

"Greetings from the dead," declares Maxwell Broadbent on the videotape he left behind after his mysterious disappearance. A notorious treasure hunter and tomb robber, Broadbent accumulated over a half a billion dollars' worth of priceless art, gems, and artifacts before vanishing---along with his entire collection---from his mansion in New Mexico.

At first, robbery is suspected, but the truth proves far stranger: As a final challenge to his three sons, Broadbent has buried himself and his treasure somewhere in the world, hidden away like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh. If the sons wish to claim their fabulous inheritance, they must find their father's carefully concealed tomb.

The race is on, but the three brothers are not the only ones competing for the treasure. This secret is so astounding it cannot be kept quiet for long. With half a billion dollars at stake, as well as an ancient Mayan codex that may hold a cure for cancer and other deadly diseases, others soon join the hunt---and some of them will stop at nothing to claim the grave goods.

Fearless
The WB has dumped the drama series FEARLESS before anyone, save some industry types and the nation's TV critics, got to see it. The outcome was widely assumed when the network pulled the show from its fall schedule, saying producer Jerry Bruckheimer wanted more time to develop the concept. Jordan Levin, The WB's co-CEO, officially signed its death warrant Tuesday (Jan. 13) at the TV Critics Association press tour.

FEARLESS, based on a series of books by Francine Pascal, starred Rachael Leigh Cook (SHE'S ALL THAT) as a young FBI agent genetically incapable of feeling fear. The chief criticism of the series was that Cook's character came off more affectless than fearless.

Flash Gordon Volume 4 by Mac Raboy - Available January 21st!
Continuing Dark Horse Comics' tradition of finer reprint books, the fourth (and final) volume in the archival collection of Mac Raboy's lengthy Flash Gordon run will be available in comic shops on January 21st.

This series marks the first time that Raboy's Flash Gordon strips have ever been collected. Beginning his comics career in 1940, Emanuel "Mac" Raboy is perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. He graduated from a government-funded art class, was heavily influenced by Alex Raymond's style, and, in the Spring of 1948, he signed on with King Features to illustrate the "Flash Gordon" Sunday page. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Mac Raboy's run on this serial was actually longer than Raymond's. Raboy drew the strip until his death in December of 1967, and several of his early wood engravings (from his fine art days) remain in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum.  This is a 256 page, black and white, trade paperback for a retail price of $19.95.

SAHARA  - Upcoming movie featuring Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt!
Variety reports that bestselling novelist Clive Cussler has sued Crusader Entertainment for allegedly changing the SAHARA screenplay without Cussler's consent in spite of Cussler's script approval rights. The complaint was filed with the aim to prevent the release of the film, and cut back or off the author's relationship with the production company. Paramount began shooting late last year and has scheduled the film for a fourth quarter 2004 release. The suit states that basically the agreement Cussler signed with Crusader gave him "unqualified right of approval" over the screenplays, and that after Cussler approved the SAHARA script, it was then altered subsequently without his consent.

The movie and book follows adventurer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) who along with a beautiful UN investigator (Penelope Cruz) and his sidekick (Steve Zahn) must stop a dangerous threat in Africa to the world's oceanic ecosystems.

Star Wars Sequels?
It's long been known that George Lucas had at least six films in mind when he made the original three STAR WARS films. It has taken him until now to pick up where he left off and make the prequel trilogy. Lucas has also suggested in the past that he had ideas for a final three movies, making the STAR WARS saga a grand trilogy of trilogies. More recently, however, Lucas denied having considered any post-Return of the Jedi episodes.

The December issue of British entertainment magazine HOTDOG has hit the stands in the U.S., and TheForce.net reports on this passage about Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew: "No wonder Peter 'Chewbacca' Mayhew is smiling. Not only has he been rescued from obscurity and given the chance to reprise his role as our Wookiee comrade for Episode III, but his contract also stipulates that he'd be required to appear in Episodes 7, 8, and 9."
Stay tuned to TheForce.net for the latest on the sequel rumors.

OUT OF TIME'S ABYSS by Edgar Rice Burroughs
This is the tale of Bradley after he left Fort Dinosaur upon the west coast of the great lake that is in the center of the island. Upon the fourth day of September 1916, he set out with four companions through the heavy Caspakian air. About them upon the ground, among the trees and in the air over them moved and swung and soared the countless forms of Caspak's teeming life. They had taken a dozen steps, perhaps, when a hideous growl broke from a dense thicket ahead, the leafy branches parted, and the  hideous head of a gigantic bear emerged. "Lie still!" shouted Bradley. "Can't waste ammunition." Like a bolt of lightning the bear flashed down upon the Englishman. "Now run!" Bradley called to Tippet and himself turned in flight toward a nearby tree. The other men, now safely ensconced upon various branches, watched the race with breathless interest. Would Bradley make it? It seemed scarce possible. And if he didn't. . . !

That's great news for La, the high priestess for the Flaming God, who's had a serious crush on the apeman since their first encounter. THE ETERNAL SAVAGE by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Tarzan is featured in this story that is truly about Nu. "Nu, the son of Nu, his mighty muscles rolling beneath his smooth bronzed skin, moved silently through the jungle primeval. His handsome head with its shock of black hair, roughly cropped between sharpened stones, was high held, the delicate nostrils questioning each vagrant breeze for word of Oo, hunter of men.

"Now his trained senses catch the familiar odor of Ta, the great woolly rhinoceros, directly in his path, but Nu, the son of Nu, does not hunt Ta this day. Does not the hide of Ta's brother already hang before the entrance of Nu's cave? No, today Nu hunts the gigantic cat, the fierce saber-toothed tiger, Oo, for Nat-ul, wondrous daughter of old Tha, will mate with none but the mightiest of hunters.[R] Only so recently as the last darkness, as, beneath the great, equatorial moon, the two had walked hand in hand beside the restless sea she had made it quite plain to Nu, the son of Nu, that not even he, son of the chief of chiefs, could claim her unless there hung at the thong of his loin cloth the fangs of Oo."

"Professor Moriarty, once reported dead, but now rejuventated by the Time Machine which Moriarty has swiped from H.G. Wells' time traveler . . . Doyle to H.G. Wells to Dvorkin . . . nice triple play!" -- The New York Times

TALES OF TERROR: BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH by Julian Hawthorne, Editor
In the first decade of the twentieth century, Julian Hawthorne -- son of Nathaniel Hawthorne and not only a talented writer in his own right, but a writer who spent his entire life proving himself, over and over again -- in the first decade of the twentieth century, Julian Hawthorne collected his favorite weird stories from writers around the world and organized them, mostly geographically, for Scribners -- which published them in a series of "mystery" anthologies under the "Lock and Key Library" rubric. More rightly, the anthologies are Weird Fiction -- some of the stories are mystery; some would do well published as modern horror, or SF, or fantasy; all of them exquisite and of interest to modern genre readers.

"Tales of Terror: Between Heaven and the Earth" was published as the Old-Time English Writers volume. It includes stories from early nineteenth century Britain's masters of the weird, including Charles Dickens, Edward George Bulwer-Lytton, Charles Robert Maturin, and William Makepeace Thackeray.

THE CASE OF THE COLONIST'S CORPSE
SHAMELESS PLUG:  This is not really pulp-related, but the authors are good friends of mine, so here goes.
STAR TREK: THE CASE OF THE COLONIST'S CORPSE is a Sam Cogley Mystery by Bob Ingersoll and Tony Isabella.  Cogley was the eccentric, computerphobic lawyer who represented Captain Kirk in the first-season STAR TREK episode Court-Martial.  Co-authors Ingersoll and Isabella have taken the character and crafted a "Perry Mason" mystery with him. The book plays in three genres: it's a STAR TREK (and science fiction) novel, it's a whodunnit, and it's a legal thriller.  The editor and publisher thought the novel should look as much like the old Perry Mason paperbacks as possible.  Consequently, the cover design and the type are just like the Perry Mason paperbacks.  Best of all, the book was also printed with tinted pages like the Perry Mason paperbacks!

If you are a Perry Mason fan, a Star Trek fan, or just looking for something a little different, you can't go wrong spending a few hours devouring this book. This is a 288 page mass market paperpack for $6.99.
It is available in bookstores everywhere or from Amazon.com.

You may also want to checkout the first novel by Ingersoll and Isabella, CAPTAIN AMERICA: LIBERTY'S TORCH.
It features spot illustrations by Mike Zeck and a killer cover by Jim Steranko!

Conan
The Official Conan Website is reporting that initial orders for the first issue of the new Dark Horse Conan comic series that debuts in late February are 51,000 copies.  That is a pretty strong debut in todays comics market.

Dark Horse also announced that sales of the Chronicles of Conan graphic novel collections were holding steady. The first volume was the number one selling graphic novel in October, 2003; volume II has just been released, with the third volume at the printers and the fourth volume finishing up production.

Jack Williamson
Last June, science fiction author Kevin Anderson announced that he delivered to DC Comics all six scripts of a 1940's-era Justice Society of America series, LORD DYNAMO, which features the Golden Age incarnations of the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and others.  The team's mascot and historian Johnny Thunder, who wants to become a writer for the pulp magazines, teams up with real-life science fiction author Jack Williamson to develop superhero tales for AMAZING STORIES magazine.  Anderson obtained permission from Jack Williamson and AMAZING STORIES to create this thrilling and heartwarming miniseries. Barry Kitson was named as the artist for the series.

This week, Barry Kitson announced that "For the immediate future I'm concentrating on a major JSA miniseries written by Kevin Anderson which will give me the opportunity to draw all the original JSAers for the first time and allow me to work again with Senior Editor Peter Tomasi."

Sources at DC indicate that JSA: Lord Dynamo may get a name change, but is targeted for a late summer start.

Moonstone Books - I LOVE A MYSTERY
Moonstone Books has acquired publishing rights to the old-time radio series I Love a Mystery
Moonstone will first publish a remastered collection of the seldom-seen I Love a Mystery newspaper strip by Don Sherwood, targeted for trade paperback form in late summer. The radio series, written, produced and directed by Carlton E. Morse, ran from 1939-1953, and there were also four movies (three in the late 1940's and one in 1966).

Here's how Moonstone describes the property:
"I Love a Mystery featured three memorable rough-and-tumble seekers of fun, mayhem and adventure; Jack, Doc and Reggie. A combination of the Three Musketeers and Robin Hood all rolled into one, the three considered themselves Soldiers of Fortune with a difference, ones with a conscience and a morality to adhere to. The three had originally met while fighting for the losing side during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, but they united again stateside after surviving that conflict against seemingly impossible odds.

"In the carefree early days the stories were basically rough and tumble pulp action stories as the trio literally stumbled into adventure just for the fun of it. As Jack put it, 'We simply weren't cut out for regular working hours, we like to move around too much.' Later, the emphasis was more on mystery, adventure, and the supernatural as the trio took on clients and opened the A-1 Detective Agency in Hollywood; Doc hires Jerry Booker, as the A-1's super-scrumptious spunky secretary/co-adventurer."

Alias the Gray Seal - Omnibus: The First Two Books Featuring the Legendary Gentleman-Thief
by Frank L. Packard
REINTRODUCING THE GREATEST ROMANTIC DUO IN SUSPENSE FICTION Jimmy Dale was the most brilliant of all thieves, a member of society by day, at night a celebrated cat burglar, "The Gray Seal." But vulnerable to blackmail, he was only a pawn in the hands of the "Tocsin," the mysterious, unseen woman who forced him to steal–for good! When she orders him to "Lay low for a year, Jimmie," he lies low, and when she sends him a letter saying, "Crack this safe, Jimmie," he dons his mask and gets out his safe cracker. He poses in the tenderloin as " Larry of the Bat,". and learns all the secrets of thieves, and paradoxically finds himself hunted by the police and the underworld. With both baying at his heels, Jimmy Dale uses his criminal talents to right wrongs, save lives, preserve reputations, and expose wrongdoers to the light of day. How could Jimmy help but fall in love with the Tocsin–and how could he know that when he finally found her, he’d be placing her life in the gravest danger and that their adventures would only be beginning! Here in one ebook are the first two adventures of Jimmy Dale, Alias The Gray Seal. The Saturday Review called them: "Stories of excitement, intrigue, etc., which have no equal." The New York World said: "These tales are abounding in 'pep! Beyond doubt the most polished narratives of the underworld yet published." Contains The Adventures of Jimmy Dale (1917) and The Further Adventures of Jimmy Dale (1918) – over 800 pages in hardcover.  The price is just $4.49.

Supernatural Crime
The Supernatural Crime website features the weekly adventures of two '30s-styled crime fighters: FEMME NOIR and  BROTHER GRIM.

BROTHER GRIM: Sworn enemy of the Port Nocturne underworld, the skull-visaged BROTHER GRIM wages an
unrelenting war against the weird menaces and super-criminals that are beyond the reach of mortal law, dealing blazing justice from the barrels of twin, silver-plated automatics.  BROTHER GRIM is by Ron Fortier, Christopher Mills, and Delfin Barral.

FEMME NOIR features Femme Noir, a very private private eye who works the mean streets and bloody alleys of a city where crime and corruption are the status quo and the nights seem to last forever. Take a midnight stroll down the rain-slick streets of Port Nocturne, where the acrid scent of gunpowder hangs in the air like cheap perfume, where every dark alley comes to a dead end, and justice is blonde!   FEMME NOIR is written by Christopher Mills and illustrated by Joe Staton.

Also featured on the website are are SUPERNATURAL CRIME and NIGHTMARK.

SUPERNATURAL CRIME also features Femme Noir in a comic strip written by Christopher Mills and illustrated by Dario Carrasco.

NIGHTMARK is GIDEON KING, a former New York City cop and wounded Spanish Civil War veteran turned Boston private eye.  This is a hard-boiled detective/horror fiction hybrid comic series in the pulp tradition. NIGHTMARK is written and toned by Christopher Mills and illustrated by Darren Goodhart

Four well done comic strips in the pulp tradition that I think you will enjoy!

COLLECTED ESSAYS, VOLUME 1: AMATEUR JOURNALISM by H. P. Lovecraft
Edited by S. T. Joshi  and scheduled for March 2004
Cloth: ISBN 0-9721644-1-3: $40.00         Paper: ISBN 0-9721644-2-1: $20.00
Discovering the amateur press in 1914, Lovecraft immediately flooded the many small papers of his friends and colleagues with contributions discussing the nature, purpose, and future of amateur journalism. He also edited his own magazine, The Conservative (1915-23), filling it with additional essays. In these articles Lovecraft discusses the conflict between the United and the National Amateur Press Associations; the "halcyon days" of the amateur movement (1885-95); and the "needs and betterment" of the amateur cause. We read of Lovecraft's bitter feuds with his fellow amateurs; his exhaustive critiques of their writing; and, most poignant of all, his touching affirmation of "What Amateurdom and I Have Done for Each Other," in which he concludes simply: "What Amateur Journalism has given me is—life itself."

Lovecraft's writings in the realm of literary criticism are unfailingly acute and cover a surprisingly wide range. Besides his authoritative early essay on "The Literature of Rome" (1918), other works condemn free verse and simple spelling, and devote attention to neglected poets. Discovering weird fiction as his chosen field, he produced such scintillating essays as "Lord Dunsany and His Work" (1922) and "Supernatural Horror in Literature" (1927), along with essays on Frank Belknap Long and Clark Ashton Smith. Late in life Lovecraft codified his grasp of weird literature by writing such trenchant pieces as "Notes on Writing Weird Fiction" (1933) and "Some Notes on Interplanetary Fiction" (1934). One of his last writings, "Suggestions for a Reading Guide" (1936), is a comprehensive discussion of world literature.

The Pulp Rack - New update!
The Pulp Rack starts off 2004 by posting a new article about Frederick Faust, aka Max Brand.
Duane Spurlock has written this one, Frederick Faust's Abrupt Endings.

Frederick Faust's stories frequently seem to defy the traditional plot arc, in which a denouement -- or falling action that wraps up loose ends -- follows the climax. More than one reader has commented with a grumble about the abrupt endings of Faust's stories. With the body of his tale told, the author seems to have no interest in providing a typical sense of closure to his readers. Like a rocket that has expended all its fuel and then falls to earth, a Faust story speeds pell-mell to its climax, and then stops.

This article looks at three possible explanations for the abruptness of Faust's endings for his stories, then explores a fourth reason: that in writing and ending his stories, Faust followed the model of an older sort of literature.
