Also, feature film actor Ethan Hawke has inked a deal to star in an upcoming episode of ALIAS as a CIA agent who finds himself in need of being rescued by Jennifer Garner's character. 

"The Courtyard was my attempt to write a story within the mythology of H.P. Lovecraft that did not try to regurgitate Lovecraft's style," says creator Alan Moore. "It was an attempt to write a Lovecraftian story that was set in what was then the near future rather than in a Lovecraftian Era.  As such, I thought it was a very successful story and it has always been a little favorite of mine in terms of my horror output.  I am looking forward a great deal to seeing what Jacen does with the Avatar version."

Buck Rogers, a hero whose name came to define a genre, first appeared in an original story entitled Armageddon-2419, written by Philip Francis Nowlan. The main character was a pursuit pilot, who in an unlikely turn of events stepped into a cloud of radioactive gas inside an abandoned mine and disappeared into 500 years of suspended animation. When he emerged, Anthony - soon to be "Buck" - Rogers, found himself in a land of rocket pistols, hovercrafts, paralysis rays, and electo-hypno mentalaphones. Artist Dick Calkins made the strip rich with sidebar features, designing scores of odd aliens, sleek rayguns, and streamlined rocketships.

The article indicated that Conan Properties, Inc. was frustrated with the slow development process that Conan 3 (a.k.a. King Conan) was enduring at Warners, as well as with the Wachowskis' ongoing work on The Matrix sequels. (Apparently, production on Conan 3 wouldn't have commenced until the Wachowskis were finished with The Matrix series.)

The article went on to reveal some changes that fans can expect from this new Conan movie. With Milius and Schwarzenegger no longer involved, Conan Properties allegedly wants to set up Conan at another studio - no word yet on where - with the hopes of producing "a kinder, gentler Conan," in the words of one source.  Conan Properties wants to cast a younger thesp as the title character and to produce a more "friendly" Conan film on a less epic (i.e., cheaper) scale using The Scorpion King as its template. (Spider-Man was another example of the kind of audience-friendly film that Conan Properties, Inc. wants to emulate.) Conan Properties, hoping to strike while the iron is hot, want to produce a cheapie Conan flick that will enjoy a boffo opening weekend.

Swedish-based Paradox Entertainment recently bought 20% of Conan Sales Company, which according to a company press release, holds all intellectual property rights in and associated with the character Conan. This deal gives Paradox a say in all Conan licensing partnerships, including the film deal that was set up at Warner Brothers. 

In a followup article on 26 November, IGN FilmForce reported that they were contacted today by Fredrik Malmberg of Conan Properties, Inc., the company that owns the character of (and controls the film rights to) Conan the Barbarian. Mr. Malmberg contacted them in regards to their report that broke the news that writer/director John Milius, star Arnold Schwarzenegger, and producers Larry and Andy Wachowski were no longer involved with the making of King Conan: Crown of Iron. While never fully dismissing IGN FilmForce's report, Mr. Malmberg did assure them that Conan Properties keeps its "ears to the ground and we do listen to the fans."

Mr. Malmberg advised FilmForce that Conan Properties "always and regularly receive pitches about how and when Conan should be made. Some people tell us Conan should be kinder. Some say less expensive. A lot think quicker. There are always advises left and right. This is because Conan is at the top of many people's minds and Conan is a great franchise. I can definitely tell you the next Conan movie will NOT be cheaper. It will have the best production value, the best studio and the best director. There are no exceptions. As far as we are concerned, Warners is not out and we are in discussions with them about the project."

Malmberg did concede that "the wait for new entertainment has been long and we need to see some action on the screen. And, as a comment, Conan is the real Barbarian. Scorpion King was not." He also revealed that Conan Properties "will shortly have our new website up to get closer to the fan community." 

When pressed to comment as to whether Milius, Schwarzenegger and the Wachowskis are off the project, Mr. Malmberg replied that
"you are asking me to participate in the rumour mill and I cannot. Suffice to say it is only [Warner Brothers] who decides about [the] Wachowskis, Schwarzenegger and Milius - it is not our task. With scripts, we may have comments but so do a lot of other people involved in a film production. We have not contacted anybody but as I mentioned before we get contacted by top creative talent in all media on a regular basis with their opinions of how to do or not to do things."

R. H. Barlow (1918-1951) was in every way a remarkable individual. An enthusiast of fantasy and horror fiction since childhood, he came in touch with H. P. Lovecraft when he was only 13. He was already attempting to write short fantasy tales, and Lovecraft took onsiderable pains to tutor Barlow in the principles of fiction writing. This volume, which for the first time gathers Barlow's substantial body of weird fiction and poetry, contains all six of Barlow's collaborations with Lovecraft, including such celebrated works as The Battle That Ended the Century and The Night Ocean (which new research has shown to be almost entirely Barlow's work). Barlow went on to write superb short stories without Lovecraft's assistance, including A Dim-Remembered Story, The Root-Gatherers, and Return by Sunset. In the 1940s, when Barlow moved to Mexico (where he became a noted anthropologist), he turned to poetry, producing such scintillating volumes as Poems for a Competition (1942) and View from a Hill (1947). Barlow's life was tragically cut short by suicide, but this volume shows that he had already fulfilled the promise of his early work by producing tales of a substance, maturity, and depth that few of Lovecraft's colleagues could match. The gathering together of his collected weird fiction and poetry is an event that should be welcomed by all lovers of the weird and fantastic.

New at The Pulp Rack
   In the "Contemporary Pulp" section, there's an appreciation of Comico's Jonny Quest comic book series and an appreciation by Trever Palmer of George Gilman's EDGE and ADAM STEELE series.
   To launch the addition of the Adventure Fiction material, there are two fictioneer biographies from "Adventure Pulp" section:  one on Arthur J. Burks and the other on Garrett P. Serviss. 
   Western author and pulp fanzine publisher Howard Hopkins adds an article about Black Horse Westerns, the imprint from British publisher Robert Hale Books that is keeping alive the old western-pulp tradition for today's readers.
   Jim Griffin adds a brief introduction to the work of Kirby Jonas, a contemporary writer who writes westerns in the pulp mold.
   Work continues on the Max Brand Photo-Bibliography of stories published in magazines by Frederick Faust, based on the great "Frederick Faust: A Bibliography" by Jon Tuska in THE MAX BRAND COMPANION. Added this week: 1937.

The new series is written by Ron Zimmerman with art by legendary Western artist John Severin.
Marvel has been reporting that the title will have an outrageous concept, while Zimmerman himself in an interview said he’ll be giving the character an “interesting, dark twist” .  This is a 32 page color comic for $2.99.

Alan Moore is starting to think about the next adventure. All that was revealed is that the League of 1898 was not the first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the next mini-series will feature a League of the past, along with a
League of a few decades later, circa World War 1.  While League Volume II heads towards it's ultimate conclusion, Alan and Kevin have already planned out the events and characters of Volume III and they are planning on diving straight into it as soon as the current series wraps up. 

Terra Obscura

Set in England at the turn-of-the-century as in the book, Pendragon Pictures production of War of the Worlds will be an accurate translation to the screen.  Their previous modern-day version of War of the Worlds was abandoned due to the events of September 11th. The majority of fans supported Pendragon Pictures' actions, though some were displeased.   "Some people wrote us to say they thought we were giving in to the terrorists by shutting the picture down," reflects producer Susan Goforth. "What they didn't know is that our updated version had scenes with people jumping from burning buildings and planes falling out of the sky. Portions of the script were so close to the WTC attack, I don't think the world would ever have accepted that version. There is a staggering amount of interest from all over the world in our production of War of the Worlds. Overwhelmingly people are supporting our decision to set the picture in the correct time."

Director Timothy Hines adds, "In light of recent and ongoing world events, and with the urging of respected Wells supporters like Charles Keller, director of the Wells Society, I am convinced it's the only way to do it. It was the first extraterrestrial story and still, over a hundred years later, the most revered by the world.

According to Dark Horse, “First introduced as ‘Conan the Cimmerian’ in the 1930's, Howard's character quickly garnered an enormous following the world over. Over the past 70 years the barbarian hero has been brought to life in books, comics, television, and film. Recently rumored to be in the works is a new Conan feature film!”

Based on Francine Pascal's series of young adult novels, Fearless revolves around Gaia Moore, whose mom was murdered and whose antiterrorist operative dad is in hiding. Her genetic mutation and special training make her a superhero of sorts, but she's also just a high school student, a la early Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The WB is targeting the pilot for next fall.

Diamond Comic Distributors is shipping the second book in the Marvel Comics Killraven mini-series to comic shops to arrive on 13 November.  This is a six issue mini-series written and pencilled by Alan Davis with Mark Farmer inking and Gregory Wright coloring.   Each issue is 32 pages with ads for $2.99.

The Gault Papers
Our biggest news recently has been the addition to The Pulp Rack of a Talbot Mundy category and the Gault Papers -- the bibliographic information that R.T. "Ditch" Gault compiled and posted to the Internet a number of years ago under the title "Bibliographic Information on Talbot Mundy's Tibetan, Jimgrim, and Tros Story Series." With Gault's death, that material disappeared from the Internet. Thanks to Carl William Thiel, this material is now available again at The Pulp Rack for the great research resource that it is. More Mundy-related material is on the way soon.

The softcover edition was listed on Diamond's list of expected items to ship next week, but is not shipping yet.

Calling all Western & Spicy fans! We have the December 1937 issue of SPICY WESTERN available. 
Satan Sits In by James Lawson is the lead story and the pulp is graced with a great H.J. Ward cover of a buxom belle being menaced by a bottle-wielding bad guy. 

The second Replica for this month is the February 1, 1935 issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE entitled The Plot Master. This is an early issue that has not been reprinted in paperback and it can be yours for a fraction of the price of an original.

As always, these reprints are exact copies including the illustrations, ads and back-up stories and have been printed on off-white paper, staple-bound and finished off with a high quality reproduction of the original cover. MANDRAKE was created in 1934 by Lee Falk and is now syndicated in more than 200 newspapers on six continents. The strip follows Mandrake’s adventures as he uses his powers of hypnotism and illusion to fight crime. His partners are Lothar and his girlfriend, Princess Narda. 

Specific details are being tightly guarded, but Hyde Park’s helmer, Ashok Armitraj, has said the project will follow the magician on a “big-canvas adventure story” from the United States to Europe to South America.
