Age of Aces
New and now available!

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces. But America has it’s own unnatural secret weapon: Captain Philip Strange. A mental marvel from birth, he was so terrifyingly effective that the Allies referred to him as “The Phantom Ace of G-2.” But to the Germans he was “The Brain-Devil,” whose penetrating green eyes were both a legend and a nightmare.

Keyhoe’s Philip Strange stories ran for nine years—from 1931 through 1939—in the pages of Flying Aces magazine. This first volume in our new series contains six exciting tales of terror skies! It also features an introduction by Sid Bradd and is beautifully wrapped up in an exciting new design by Chris Kalb!

Stories include:
“Cocardes of Courage” – Flying Aces, September 1931
“The Drome of Dread” – Flying Aces, November 1931
“The Red Demon” – Flying Aces, July 1932
“Scourge of the Skies” – Flying Aces, November 1932
“Vengeance of V-99” – Flying Aces, February 1933
“The Unholy Horror” – Flying Aces, July 1933
Plus:
“Donald E. Keyhoe and the Brain-Devil of G-2″ by Sidney H. Bradd
A Bibliography of all Philip Strange’s Adventures
An exciting book design by Chris Kalb.

David L. Golemon: THE SUPERNATURALS - Now available!
From the Author of the Event Group thrillers!
Summer Place—built at the turn of the twentieth century by one of the richest and most powerful men in the world. Tucked away in the pristine Pocono Mountains and used as a summer retreat for the rich and famous, Summer Place was the description of charm and beauty. Built to spec, the twenty-four bedrooms and manicured grounds sparkled. It was truly a home that was as warm and beautiful as any well-appointed resort.

For a retreat that boasted the most glamorous setting in all of America, the gable roofed mansion was the epitome of tranquility…until 1925 when something went horribly wrong. Once homey and inviting, Summer Place had now become a haven for evil incarnate. A dark presence came to the yellow and white trimmed mansion, and it was now collecting the souls it needed to survive and thrive amongst the mountains that surround it.

Closed down by the owners and not lived in since the start of World War II, Summer Place has been maintained in its pristine condition, waiting for the team of men and women to discover its dark secret. In a national television broadcast reminiscent of Orson Wells War of the Worlds broadcast of 1939, America will witness on live television the coming of true evil, and it will be up to Professor Gabriel Kennedy, a disgraced Psychologist who had once faced the evil inside of Summer Place and came away a true believer in its extraordinary power. Now, along with the paranormal ghost hunting team; The Supernaturals, Kennedy will draw out and try to end the haunting that has been going on at Summer Place for over a hundred years.

You are asked to bear witness to the battle of wills as the thing inside of Summer Place will not go down without a fight!

Dime Novel Castle
Coming November 4th!
Old Sleuth, the Detective; or, The Bay Ridge Mystery
Originally Published June 10, 1872

Old Sleuth is a famous detective much feared by the underworld because he has an uncanny knack for finding obscure clues to unravel mysteries that have baffled the police.  A supposedly wizened old man with white, mutton chop whiskers and glasses, Old Sleuth is in reality Harry Loveland, a man presumably in his early 30s -- at least in the first story; in the subsequent tales, he is, in fact, an old man.

The creation of Harlan Page Halsey (October 23, 1837-- December 16, 1898), Old Sleuth was the first detective in dime novel fiction to be featured in a continuous series of stories; his adventures, however, were few and far between.

The first Old Sleuth story was printed in the weekly story paper, The Fireside Companion (Old Sleuth, the Detective; or, The Bay Ridge Mystery) on June 10, 1872; it concluded three months later on October 14, 1872.  Five more Old Sleuth tales followed in 1875, 1883, 1884, 1888 and 1891.  The stories were reprinted in the Old Sleuth Library in the late 1880s and some of them were reprinted elsewhere over the years to the very end of the dime novel era.

In this meticulously researched and fantastically pictorialized volume, Frank Reade and his peerless progeny are brought to life in all their globetrotting escapades with amazing electric airships, submarines, and robots, as well as historical figures like Houdini and Geronimo. Frank Reade did exist, but only in the pages of 19th-century dime novels. While the authors have completely re-imagined and enriched those tales into a family biography, they have also restored the incredible original engravings — most of which haven’t been seen in print in more than a century — and now present these lost pieces of Americana alongside their own creatively realized imagery. Part science fiction and part alternate history, Frank Reade is equally as imaginative as the authors’ previous epic volume, Boilerplate, and presents an even more rollicking narrative.

GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER - Now Smites Evil—via Kindle!
Puritan Swordsman’s Adventures Debut on Amazon’s Popular e-Reader

White Rocket Books proudly announces the release in Kindle format of Gideon Cain: Demon Hunter, the multi-award-nominated Sword-and-Sorcery anthology co-created by Van Allen Plexico (SENTINELS; LUCIAN) and Kurt Busiek (Dark Horse’s CONAN; ASTRO CITY), among other New Pulp luminaries.
The book contains seven stories that see the dour Puritan battling evil both demonic and all-too-human, on land and sea, in deserts and forests and frozen wastes.

Having witnessed the travesty of the Salem Witch Trials first hand, Cain leaves his home and family behind to fulfill his divinely-decreed destiny.  Now, armed only with his flintlock pistols, imposing mortuary sword engraved with angelic runes, and his unshakeable faith in his holy cause, Cain relentlessly pursues the arch-demon Azazel, corruptor of Mankind, across the globe.  Along the way, he clashes with pirates, savages, monsters and madmen.

“New Pulp” all-star scribes Scott Harris, K. G. McAbee, James Palmer, Ian Watson, David Wright, and Brian Zavitz join writer/editor/co-creator Van Allen Plexico in delivering seven savage tales of holy vengeance.

Says Plexico of this new electronic edition: “I was extremely proud to bring GIDEON CAIN to the world as part of another publisher’s paperback line.  Now I’m equally excited to see the grim Puritan hacking-and-slashing his way onto Kindles, by way of White Rocket Books!  Having the involvement from day one on this project of the guy who wrote one of the greatest CONAN runs ever—Kurt Busiek—should guarantee readers of what kind of Sword-and-Sorcery adventure they have in store here.”

Originally published in trade paperback in 2010 by Airship 27, GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER was nominated for three Pulp Factory Awards (two for Best Story; one for best artwork).  Additionally, Plexico and Watson were nominated for Best Pulp Writer by PulpArk.  The new Kindle edition presents all seven stories in their entirety, along with the Introduction by Busiek, at the low price of only $2.99.

White Rocket Books is a leader in the New Pulp movement, publishing exciting action and adventure novels and anthologies since 2005, in both traditional and electronic formats.   White Rocket books have hit the Amazon.com Top 15-by-Genre and have garnered praise from everyone from Marvel Comics Editor Tom Brevoort to Kirkus Reviews.

On sale as of October 27, 2011, GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER is a $2.99 e-book from White Rocket Books.

Hippocampus Press: A Monster of Voices: Speaking For H. P. Lovecraft
Now available!
For more than two decades, Robert H. Waugh has been one of the most penetrating scholars of the work and thought of H. P. Lovecraft. His earlier volume, The Monster in the Mirror (2006), contained a treasury of essays that displayed Waugh’s exhaustive knowledge of Lovecraft’s work and his skill in placing Lovecraft in a broader literary context. This new collection of essays cements Waugh’s reputation as a pioneering Lovecraft scholar.

Among the contributions are studies of the influence of World War I on “The Rats in the Walls”; Lovecraft’s relationship to his two late colleagues, Robert Bloch and Fritz Leiber, as well as to such other writers as D. H. Lawrence, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Eugene O’Neill; the influence of Roman literature and history on Lovecraft; and the sublimated eroticism of “The Thing on the Doorstep” and “Medusa’s Coil.” All in all, this volume, containing several previously unpublished essays, displays the inexhaustible depths of Lovecraft’s writing and Robert H. Waugh’s deftness in probing its intricacies.

John Pelan Presents: Classics of Science Fiction
The first two volumes are now available!
It’s amazing, astounding, and even thrilling! In a startling development, we’re pleased to announce the most astonishing publishing news of the year! Hot on the heels of his acclaimed line of weird menace and supernatural thrillers offered by Dancing Tuatara Press, award-winning horror author/editor John Pelan has set his sites on the science fiction genre!

From the early years of Amazing Stories and Astounding Science Fiction to the 1960s and the dawn of the New Wave editor Pelan has assembled a stellar line-up of short story collections by some of his favorite authors in the field. Material has been sourced from publications from Argosy to Weird Tales and these collections are entirely new, with much of the material having never appeared in book form at all!

There will be a new title issued every month!
At present we have our schedule set through early 2012:
September – THE CHARIOTS OF SAN FERNANDO – Malcolm Jameson
October – THE STORY WRITER & OTHER STORIES – Richard Wilson
November – THE HOUSE THAT TIME FORGOT – Robert F. Young
December – TWO SUNS OF MORCALI – Evelyn E. Smith
January – A NICHE IN TIME – William F. Temple

We asked Mr. Pelan “Why a SF line, and why now?”
“Well, I’ve spent the last year building up the Dancing Tuatara Press imprint with reprints of pre-WWII British supernatural thriller and reviving the work of authors of weird menace stories such as Wyatt Blassingame, Donald Dale, John H. Knox, and Arthur Leo Zagat. At the same time I was putting together definitive collections of the works of Frank Belknap Long and Arthur J. Burks for Centipede Press. In fact, it was the latter two projects that really got me to take a look at several authors that have seemingly been neglected over the years; I’d pick up a run of Astounding or Unknown in order to acquire a Burks or Long story and catch myself reading Malcolm Jameson, Raymond Z. Gallun and Cleve Cartmill. This was the stuff I grew up reading along with contemporary publications. It occurred to me that if this material wasn’t published during the 1960s boom or picked up by a specialty press such as Haffner Press or NESFA, it wasn’t likely to get published at all… Novels are easy, all one has to do is pick up an existing book and fire up the OCR… Short story collections, not so much… A lot of thought has to go in to assembling a collection and then there’s the challenge of gathering the material! My publishing career has always been about issuing books that I’d like to have in my collection that likely wouldn’t exist if I didn’t produce them myself. My hope is that there are 400-500 people out there that either share my tastes or at least are intrigued enough based on previous releases to check out an author they may not be familiar with. I’m fortunate enough to be working with a team that has an absolutely amazing (no pun intended) turn around time on getting a book out to market. Assume I turn in Malcolm Jameson Volume #1 tomorrow (7/25) we can reasonably expect a finished book by the end of August! In a business where one sometimes has to wait years to see the fruits of one’s labor, that sort of instant gratification is the kind of thing that keeps me fired up to continue producing new titles.

John Pelan Presents: Classics of Science Fiction & Fantasy debuted with the publication of Malcolm Jameson’s Chariots of San Fernando, a substantial collection primarily featuring material from Astounding Science Fiction Stories, Unknown and Weird Tales. Included is Jameson’s highly regarded trilogy of “Anachron Inc.” stories, as well as a number of tales from Unknown that have never been reprinted in any form at all!

The second volume, The Story Writer and Other Stories, is the first of several collections gathering the best short fiction of Richard Wilson. We’re expecting that readers are going to be very enthusiastic about this imprint. We can be contacted directly at jpelan13@gmail.com or through our website: http://www.ramblehouse.com

LUCIAN: Dark God’s Homecoming - Now Available for Kindle!
Acclaimed SF/Action/Mystery Pulp Debuts on Popular E-Reader

White Rocket Books proudly announces the release in Kindle format of LUCIAN: Dark God’s Homecoming, the acclaimed Science Fiction/Action/Mystery pulp by Van Allen Plexico (SENTINELS; GIDEON CAIN).

Drawing inspiration from the fantastic pulp-SF tales of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), Jack Vance (The Dying Earth) and Philip Jose Farmer (World of Tiers), LUCIAN introduces us to the Dark Lord of the Golden City, an arrogant and selfish god whose insurgency to rule in Heaven failed and led to his exile on the human-occupied worlds of the far-future.  When circumstances conspire to bring him back to his celestial City, Lucian discovers that most of his fellow gods and goddesses have been murdered and that, as the devil, he is of course the prime suspect.  Now he’s on the run, barely a step ahead of his vengeful brothers and sisters, seeking evidence to prove his innocence (at least this once!) and to find the real killer—before his fellow gods catch him and end his immortal existence once and for all. Along the way, he becomes saddled with a beautiful and resourceful starship captain, who may force him to confront the hard truths about himself—if he doesn’t kill her first!
Says Van Allen Plexico of this new electronic edition: “The response this book has received in its paperback format, from Airship 27, has been more than gratifying.  Readers seem to love this black sheep of a character and find themselves enjoying rooting for the bad guy!  Now that it’s available on Kindle, I’m hoping it finds a whole new audience that will take the Dark Lord into their hearts!”

Pulp Fiction Reviews said of LUCIAN: “Fans of Jack Vance and Roger Zelazny will eat this up. Good stuff start to finish."
Van Allen Plexico is best known for the popular SENTINELS series of contemporary superhero pulp novels, as well as for the sword-and-sorcery anthology GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER (with Kurt Busiek and others) and the ASSEMBLED! books, exploring the history of Marvel Comics’ Avengers.  In 2011 he was nominated for Pulp Story of the Year (by the Pulp Factory, for “The Red Flame of Death,” from GIDEON CAIN) and Writer of the Year (by PulpArk).

On sale as of October 25, 2011, LUCIAN: Dark God’s Homecoming is a $2.99 Kindle e-book from White Rocket Books.

PRO SE PRESENTS #3 - Now available!
PRO SE PRESENTS #3, the latest issue of Pro Se Press' monthly Pulp Magazine, is now on sale!  This issue features the novella, THE HUNTER ISLAND ADVENTURE by well known New Pulp author Wayne Reinagel.

Never before in print, THE HUNTER ISLAND ADVENTURE features characters from Reinagel's INFINITE HORIZONS Universe and his PULP HEROES trilogy.  "Infinite Horizons," according to Reinagel, "explores the secret lives and revealing the unrecorded adventures of the greatest heroes and villains to ever walk the Earth.

"In the worlds of Infinite Horizons, the question is explored, what if the Victorian and Pulp era adventures actually occurred in our universe. And taking into account all of the events that have happened since that time, how would this have altered the pulp heroes from the 30’s and 40’s? The answers to these questions are presented in the first trilogy of Infinite Horizons novels entitled Pulp Heroes.

"Pulp Heroes is an epic adventure, spanning two centuries in time and linking the incredible lives of history’s most popular Victorian Age adventurers of the 1800’s with the greatest action heroes of the Pulp Era and an assortment of well-known, real-life figures."

THE HUNTER ISLAND ADVENTURE is a story about Pam Titan, Doc Titan's cousin and an adventurer in her own right, and three associates who end up on a wild adventure all their own.  Although available in ebook form, this will be the first time that the story has appeared in print.

"We are more than honored," Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions says, "to be the home for Wayne's novella.  Known for his epic storytelling and adventures that span decades, even centuries, full of his own creations as well as reinterpretations of real historical figures and literary characters, Wayne also proves he's extremely capable in telling gripping tales in a short form.  And now you can find out how capable in PRO SE PRESENTS #3!"

Pulp Adventurecon - November 5, 2011!
During 2001 and 2002, Philadelphia-based illustrator Eric Battle and Brooklyn-based writer Alex Simmons landed a dream assignment – working on the adventures of one of the greatest fictional heroes of all time, Tarzan of the Apes. As the writer and illustrator of the syndicated Tarzan newspaper strip, their job was to provide action and thrills to millions of fans the world over. The fact that Simmons and Battle are both African-American presented them with both a challenge and a unique opportunity to present the legendary character in a new light, while retaining his original identity.

Eric Battle and Alex Simmons will appear on Saturday, November 5th, 2011, at the annual Pulp AdventureCon, held at the Ramada Inn in Bordentown, NJ. There will be vendors with rare pulp magazines, movie posters, and vintage paperbacks. There are also showcased new publications that revive both the heroes and tradition of pulp fiction.

Pulp magazines were an inexpensive form of entertainment in the days before the internet, cell phones, and even television. They first appeared with Argosy in 1897, flourished in the 1930s, and ultimately died or reinvented themselves in the 1950s. Many of the fictional heroes we see in movies today; Zorro, The Shadow, and Doc Savage, started in the Pulps. Tarzan first appeared in the pages of The All-Story Magazine in 1912, ninety-nine years ago. Some literary historians have questioned Edgar Rice Burrough’s portrayal of Africans. The original pulp magazines were products of their era – and, as a result, there are portrayals of ethnic groups that seem stilted by today’s standards.

“Tarzan was among the iconic fictional characters that I was exposed to as a kid,” says Alex Simmons. “I turned to writing, began writing children’s books. In the mid-1990s, I began writing and self-publishing Blackjack, a series about an African-American soldier of fortune. I met a senior editor at United Features Syndication – she enjoyed my work on Blackjack and asked if I would be interested in writing Tarzan.
"Most assuredly, part of me was looking at the way Tarzan had been handled in the early days. Whatever negative things had been done, there were some positives, and I decided that here was an opportunity for me to portray this character in a story, as a writer and a person of color, that I could proudly stand beside, without feeling that I had belittled my people or myself.”

Alex Simmons has written and created a number of juvenile mysteries, written three movie novelizations for Disney and three biographies for Steck-Vaughn, including one on Denzel Washington. He has also written numerous comic book stories for DC Comics, Archie Comics, and Graphic Classics, as well as his own original creations. Simmons is the founder of the annual Kids Comic Con, founder and curator of the Color of Comics Exhibition.

Eric Battle has illustrated many of the Marvel and DC universes’ biggest characters, including Spider-Man, Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Green Lantern. His work on the Tarzan strips is second to none, and marked a milestone in the Tarzan character's history, as the first African-American artist to draw the Sunday strip.

The Pulp AdventureCon will be held on November 5th, 2011 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ.
The show runs from 10AM to 5PM. Admission is $5.00. For more information, www.boldventurepress.com.

PULP ARK 2012 - April 20-22, 2012!
PRO SE PRODUCTIONS announces today that PULP ARK 2012, The Official New Pulp Convention, will be held April 20-22, 2012.  PULP ARK will be held once again in the scenic Ozark Mountains in Batesville, Arkansas, a town with a rich history and full of life all its own that sets it apart from other small town venues.  PULP ARK 2012 will be held at the Independence County Fairgrounds in Batesville with ample room for vendors, guests, panels, and multiple outside activities!

"This is our second year," Tommy Hancock, PULP ARK Founder and Coordinator states, "and even though our first year was in many ways indicative of the first year of anything, we actually have quite a lot to live up to.  With our 30 or so guests last year, we found the perfect mix of Convention and Creators' Conference.   We found a formula that works for PULP ARK that is a little different than other conventions and conferences and we have to make sure we continue that aspect of it.  Also, though, we have to make sure
PULP ARK 2012 is an event that brings in fans from all over Arkansas, nearby states, and from wherever else, fans that will interact with our guests and make it a successful weekend for all.  So, with our eye on keeping some of the closeness that developed on the conference side of PULP ARK, this is all going to be a full blown Fan's Convention experience as well.  Guaranteed."

Hancock states that announcements will be forthcoming with details regularly concerning PULP ARK 2012 and can be found at http://www.prosepulp.com/#!pulp-ark

"We have," Hancock said, "returning guests and will be revealing those in the next day or so.  We are also pleased to announce we have many new guests  attending, including writers, publishers, artists, and several cool enthusiasts and performers.  One such group is the Clockwork Mechanalists, a fantastic Steampunk group out of Memphis, Tennessee.  Steampunk is an exciting area of interest and, in my opinion, as pulp as anything can be and the Mechanilists will be at PULP ARK to entertain and educate us all!"  Hancock stated that future announcements would provide more information on the  Mechanalists, Steampunk, and even a surprise announcement related to the Mechanalists and the Convention/Conference.  Hancock also promised that other guests and performers would receive similar spotlights as given the Mechanilists here in coming announcements.

PULP ARK 2012 will also have several contests going in association with the event.  "We will once again," Hancock stated, "present the Pulp Ark Awards for excellence in Pulp Fiction in the previous year.  But there'll be other awards presented in an unique way as well.  We'll be announcing several writing and art contests within the next week and the prizes for some of them are actually exciting prospects for the winning creators."

A major selling point of PULP ARK 2012 to guests, exhibitors, vendors, and performers who may be interested in attending is that there is no charge for single table space and no membership fee for vendors, guests or performers.  "We want these people to come and entertain and meet fans.  At this point in our life as a convention/conference, it's most important to us to make sure PULP ARK has a great lineup of guests and talent."

With the promise of releases and announcements rather consistently from now until PULP ARK 2012, Pro Se Productions invites you as fans, writers, creators, performers, exhibitors and vendors to be a part of PULP ARK 2012!  Email Hancock at proseproductions@earthlink.net or call 870-834-4022 for more information and remember to check out http://www.prosepulp.com/#!pulp-ark for regular updates!

"Become a Warrior" is the unexpected tale of a child who loses all she holds dear, only to gain unforeseen power and unlikely revenge. Further entries come from early sword & sorcery legends such as Jack Vance and Catherine Louise (who wrote as C. L.) Moore, the next wave of talents including Fritz Leiber and Michael Moorcock, and modern trendsetters like Karl Edward Wagner and David Drake. An original story from Michael Shea rounds out this essential anthology, which will particularly appeal to fans of action-oriented fantasy titles such as the Lord of the Rings and the Song of Fire and Ice series.

The Alluring Art of MARGARET BRUNDAGE: The Queen of Pulp Pin-Up Art
Coming Spring 2012!
Stephen D. Korshak & J. David Spurlock

Starting in 1932, Margaret Brundage forever changed the look of Fantasy, Science-Fiction and Horror with her alluring sensationalistic covers for the legendary pulp magazine, Weird Tales. Brundage, whose contemporaries include Virgil Finlay and Hannes Bok, is unique as she was the first female cover artist of the pulp era. Decades before the gothic fetish craze, Brundage's lush, provocative paintings, which frequently featured smoldering, semi-nude young women bearing whips, became a focus of acute attention and controversy. At the very peak of the notorious pulp’s classic run, the magazine’s appeal was due as much to Brundage’s covers as to the stories inside by famous authors H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch and Conan creator, Robert E. Howard. The Alluring Art of Margaret Brundage is the first book devoted to this noted artist.

Authors and compilers Stephen D. Korshak and J. David Spurlock follow their seminal collaboration, The Paintings of J. Allen St. John, with The Alluring Art of Margaret Brundage which, also features essays by noted artist Rowena Morrill, Weird Tales historian Robert Weinberg, First Fandom member / founding Shasta publisher Melvin Korshak, and more.

All editions feature big, 9” x 12” lavish illustrated, full-color pages with text.

The Compleat Adventures of Satan Hall
by Carroll John Daly
    Introduction by Robert Weinberg

Satan Hall is a man who, under the protection of a police badge, commits legal murder. Not that the city isn't better off for the deaths he causes. The men he kills are notorious, but they die without a fair trial by a jury of their peers. They die while "resisting arrest" or in the "perpetration of a crime". At least that's what the police reports usually say....

The Compleat Adventures of "Needle Mike"
by William E. Barrett
Introduction by Robert Weinberg

Look no further for all the exciting "Needle Mike" stories. William E. Barrett wrote sixteen of these fast-paced crime stories between 1934 and 1938 for readers of Detective Story Magazine and Dime Detective Magazine. Lee Server in the Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers describes the protagonist: "Barrett’s pulp masterwork was the Needle Mike series, gloriously seedy adventures of a crime-solving tattoo artist. Needle Mike was a gray-haired, gold-toothed, jaundiced-looking lowlife who practiced his trade in a ratty office building otherwise occupied by lawyers and mail-order tricksters. In reality, Mike is young Ken McNally, the son of a St. Louis millionaire, who occasionally drops out of polite society, heavily disguised, assumes his grubby alternative identity ...."

The Compleat Adventures of the Suicide Squad
by Emile C. Tepperman
    Introduction by Robert Weinberg

The Squad was created by Emile Tepperman, a name recognizable to fans of pulps, and appeared in Ace G-Man beginning in May 1939. The Squad is actually a trio of men, G-Men who make up the "F.B.I. Suicide Squad." They are Special Agents Johnny Kerrigan, Dan Murdoch, and Stephen Klaw. To quote one of their stories,

Long ago, they had found that they had one thin in common--a deliberate, willful, daredevil recklessness which made them always seek the longest odds and the most dangerous tasks. As Special Agents of the F.B.I. they were never assigned to routine jobs, but got only those assignments from which there was little chance of returning alive.

Sgt. Jimmy Wentworth was created by Sidney Herschell Small and appeared in Detective Fiction Weekly from 1931 to 1936. Wentworth, who in an interesting coincidence shares the same last name as The Spider, was a San Francisco policeman who fought two Spider-esque Fu Manchu-influenced enemies, Kong Gai, the King Cobra ("the mysterious and ferocious legendary figure of Chinatown...Kong Gai was back of every evil happening in Chinatown") and then Kong Gai's son, the Nameless One and his Tong of Death.

    Introductions by Robert Weinberg

Donald Keyhoe wrote a number of air adventure stories for Flying Aces, and other magazines, and created two larger-than-life superheroes in this genre. The first of these was Captain Philip Strange, referred to as "the Brain Devil" and "the Phantom Ace of G.2.". Captain Strange was an American intelligence officer during World War I who was gifted with ESP and other mental powers. Beb Books - Now available!

Beb Books isn’t dead but we have been too quiet for too long. And as the Christmas season approaches we have a number of tasty treats that will make great stocking stuffers for a friend... or for your self.

First up is a thrilling adventure of pirates, swashbuckling and a fortune in buried loot. From the April 18, 1918 issue of Adventure comes J. Allan Dunn’s complete novel, Sign of the Skull, a tale in the tradition of Treasure Island.

Justin Penrith, a destitute student is at the hanging of the notorious pirate Thomas Towne where he witnesses the pirate throw a ring into the crowd. On the ring is a clue to the location of his last great treasure. A chance encounter with a crippled youth, Frank Madden, sends him off on a voyage to recover that treasure ahead of the survivors of Towne’s own crew.

Our second treat bring into print for the first time in 90 years the sequel to The Curse of Capistrano — The Further Adventures of Zorro! BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER / MURANIA PRESS
Coming in November!
BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS by J. Allan Dunn

Number Two in Murania’s Classic Pulp Reprints series, featuring J. Allan Dunn’s BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS, written in 1921 and published in the legendary pulp magazine ADVENTURE. It’s the suspenseful story of nine men stranded on an island without tools, weapons, or supplies—not even so much as a watch or penknife among them. Dunn’s compelling account of their desperate struggle to survive in inhospitable surroundings enthralled ADVENTURE readers and is still regarded as the finest story of its kind. The Murania Press edition includes a new Preface by BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER editor Ed Hulse, along with an Introduction by ADVENTURE’s editor, Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, reprinted from the magazine’s “Camp-Fire” department.

BAREHANDED CASTAWAYS is priced at $19.95 and will be available through the new Murania Press web site, which will go on line in mid-November (www.muraniapress.com).

Also coming late next month, after several unavoidable postponements, will be the long-awaited DISTRESSED DAMSELS AND MASKED MARAUDERS.

Additionally, Murania head honcho Ed Hulse offers an apology for recent shipping snafus affecting BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER subscribers: “Some months ago, while simultaneously coping with health problems, financial difficulties and a family tragedy, I accepted the help of a well-meaning friend who offered to assist with order fulfillment and subscriber shipments of BnT’s Spring and Summer issues. Unfortunately, she became overwhelmed and as a result some subscriber copies of issues 29 and 30 fell between the cracks. I believe the errant copies have now all been mailed, but any subscribers who still haven’t received theirs should contact me at bnteditor@yahoo.com.”

New from Off-Trail Publications:
THE PERIL OF THE PACIFIC by J. Allan Dunn
The complete PEOPLE'S serial
Introduction by John Locke

When J. Allan Dunn broke into the pulps in 1914, he drew upon his well-traveled past for inspiration. The Peril of the Pacific, a five-part serial from Street & Smith’s PEOPLE’S magazine (July-November 1916), incorporates his experiences like no other story, taking for its settings the places in the west that Dunn knew best, San Francisco and California’s Central Coast.

Reprinted for the first time since its original publication, Peril is a Japanese invasion epic. It’s the future history, set in 1920, of a war pitting a force of American irregulars against a relentless naval empire bent on conquest. In the Americans’ favor: iron will and a new generation of futuristic technology. At risk: the entire American west . . . and a beautiful young woman . . .

Radio Archives - Now available!
In 1947, a new serial sailed its way to the airwaves, one quite unlike anything to come before it. High seas intrigue. Colorful, exciting characters, both within the stories and behind the mike. Pulse pounding, pulpy tales of pirates and buccaneers. All of this and more can be found in fifteen-minute punches of action and adventure with Afloat with Henry Morgan, Volume 1.

A 52 episode Australian series, Afloat with Henry Morgan definitely has an all ages appeal. This is due primarily to the intense pacing of the stories themselves as well as the historical component, the fact that Henry Morgan, the buccaneer spotlighted in 'Afloat' was indeed a real person! Spending nearly his entire seafaring career in the Caribbean, wild tales of adventure swirl around the real life Morgan from 1655, his first noted appearance in the area, up until his death in 1688. Morgan's legend as a carousing, hard fighting ambitious man lived far beyond his passing, providing fertile soil for Afloat with Henry Morgan to sprout from nearly 300 years later.

This classic program was produced by well-known Australian radio personality George Edwards. Edwards lent not only his production skills to Afloat, but shared his amazing vocal talents as well. Known as "The Man with a Thousand Voices," Edwards parlayed his ability to sound like a young child, any male he wanted to, nearly any nationality necessary, and even older women into a legendary career as a radio actor. The skill to do sometimes twelve different voices in a single episode definitely fit the needs of Afloat with Henry Morgan, with it being a lower budget affair.

Written by Warren Berry, Afloat with Henry Morgan follows Morgan and his intrepid band of privateers through storms, swamps, deep into the hands of the enemy, and of course across the wide-open seas. Stories center around political conspiracies, pilfered Aztec necklaces, coups and swordplay, and of course the double crossing and conniving ways of good old-fashioned pirates!

The first 28 episodes of this cliffhanger non-stop serial are presented in Afloat with Henry Morgan, Volume 1. Restored to the finest sparkling quality possible by Radio Archives, this collection brings you seven hours of history, mystery, hard men, courageous women, and sea battles galore! Thrill as Morgan becomes involved in the theft of an Aztec artifact, plots are hatched and betrayed, raids are planned and double crossed, and a plethora of characters, many voiced by George Edwards, all come together to take you Afloat with Henry Morgan in this first volume of this classic show brought to you by RadioArchives.com.

Order your Seven Hour CD set today for only $20.98 or Download the entire volume for $13.98! Only from RadioArchives.com.

Radio Archives: The Pulp Bookstore - Grand Opening!
Known for continually offering its customers the best in products and service, Radio Archives is proud to announce the opening of The Pulp Book Store. This innovative site will provide both Pulp enthusiasts and those who are simply curious a one-stop opportunity to browse and shop the best the Pulp market in all its many facets has to offer every single day!

Pulp Fiction, even though its heyday was in the early 20th Century, has been popular as long as it has existed and continues to excite readers today. Often fast paced, action packed, and full of fantastical ideas, over the top characters, and imaginative adventures, Pulp can be about cowboys, aliens, ancient gods, two-fisted detectives, bigger than life gangsters, femme fatales, and so many other sorts of characters as it reaches into nearly every genre imaginable.

In the last few years, Pulp has resurged. Some have called it a renaissance, others simply saying that due to current economic and societal situations, pulp literature is once again sought by the masses. Regardless of the view taken, the fact that so many companies are involved in either the reproduction of classic Pulp stories or creating brand new pulp stories written by modern writers proves that Pulp is still viable as a creative outlet. Add to that the rising prominence once again of such classic Pulp icons as Doc Savage, The Shadow, and The Spider, there can be no denying that Pulp strikes a chord with consumers and shows no signs of that changing.

Pulp is also all about variety. Not only are there classic and new pulp stories, but nearly every genre has stories within it that are clearly pulp. Be it science fiction, hard boiled crime, rootin' tootin' westerns and so many others, Pulp discriminates against no genre. This, along with the resurgence of Pulp publishers and its popularity, is why Radio Archives has established the Pulp Book Store.

The plan for the Book Store is simple, to become a central hub for all Pulp products. Although this may be a lofty goal, the vision behind it is basic. Instead of having to shop all over the internet and go from site to site to buy the Pulp that they want, consumers will have one location to browse a multitude of Publishers and Pulp Providers. Publishers will have a single location that will sell their products, a location that is set aside for Pulp type material only, so as customers come to view one item, every publisher gets a chance with their store to win new customers for their products.

This concept even works for the accidental browser, one who is slightly curious about Pulp or maybe knows nothing about it. In the Pulp Book Store, that person will find more than enough information and opportunities to sample this thing called Pulp.

If you're interested in Pulp Classics, then the Pulp Book Store features the best in Pulp Reprint Publishers. Ride along with the well remembered classic Pulp heroes as they fight wrong and make right! Or, if your interest leans more toward more obscure characters, you'll find those too in some of the great replicas and reprints produced by leading publishers in the Pulp world, all right here at The Pulp Book Store!

Looking for something new? Pulpy tales written by modern writers and using either original characters or simply new stories about existing characters, are growing in popularity. Pulp icons blaze new trails in original adventures, such as Will Murray's all new Doc Savage novels. A pantheon of modern original heroes step front and center to keep up the good fight as well. New tales in a classic style keep Pulp Fiction current and alive and can be found here at the Pulp Book Store!

Pulp Publishers, your home can easily be here. The Pulp Book Store is a shared marketplace where you have your own store, your own identity, yet you're in a market of like products, of companies that like you are interested in promoting Pulp. There is no better place to be to do that than amongst others doing it. Opportunity exists for all to succeed within the Pulp Book Store.

If you purchase several products from several publishers, everything is shipped to you in the same box. Our Flat Rate ground postage means that no matter how many companies you buy from, you pay only one small amount for postage and you pay for everything together. Possibly the best news, Place your order by 7:30pm Eastern Time and your order is mailed the same day. Unbelievable but true.

If Pulp is a part of your life, then browse the Pulp Book Store and enjoy. If you end up there out of curiosity or by accident, then please look around. We're sure there is something offered by our many Publishers that will intrigue you. And if you're a publisher and wish to be a part of this, send a message to Service@radioarchives.com. Regardless, Radio Archives recognizes Pulp is here to stay and wants the Pulp Book Store to be the one stop all encompassing site where it grows and thrives.

Weird Tales - Update on the new publisher (Marvin Kaye)!
Weird Tales, America’s first and foremost magazine of gothic fantasy, science fiction and horror, has been purchased by Nth Dimension Media, Inc., co-founded by veteran writer and science fiction book anthologist Marvin Kaye and director/producer John Harlacher.

Kaye is the latest in a series of distinguished editors who have guided “The Unique Magazine” through nearly nine decades. Under the direction of current editor-in-chief Ann VanderMeer the publication earned a Hugo Award, the most prestigious honor in the sci-fi world.

Publisher Harlacher plans to have VanderMeer edit one final issue before turning over the reins to Kaye in early 2012. Kaye says he is “interested in continuing and expanding the splendid work” of VanderMeer. “When I take over the helm,” he adds, “I hope Ann will continue her involvement as a consulting and contributing editor.”

Kaye describes his own vision for Weird Tales as “Janus-faced,” honoring the long history of the publication while continuing its legacy of discovering new and unusual fiction. Content will feature works of well-known, midlist and new writers, and a few reprints of classic stories.

Beginning in February 2012 each issue will have a theme, though Kaye states, “the usual assortment of stories and poetry will be included along with tales that fit the governing conceit.”

The new Weird Tales will be open to nearly all sorts of genre fiction, including absurdist humor, fantasy, horror, mystery and surrealism. “The only kind of story that probably won’t fit would be neo-realism,” says Kaye, “though even there I’m willing to be convinced otherwise.”

Kaye, the author of sixteen novels and editor of over 30 genre fiction anthologies, has a long personal history with Weird Tales. Fascinated by the “creepy-looking” magazine that his sister Dorothy brought into their Philadelphia home, he was an avid fan by the age of nine. He edited two anthologies celebrating the magazine’s distinctive brand of fiction: “Weird Tales: the Magazine That Never Dies,” published in 1988, and “The Best of Weird Tales: 1923,” published in 1997. Kaye also edited H.P. Lovecraft’s Magazine of Horror, which will remain an ongoing portion of Weird Tales.

No novice to the world of fantasy and horror, Harlacher is the co-director of “Nightmare,” an interactive theatre experience widely recognized as New York’s most horrifying haunted house. This year’s motif, a creepy rendition of familiar fairy tales, has been described by Fangoria horror magazine as “entirely spooky and full of nasty, nasty fun…imaginative, and yes, hilarious and repulsive.”

Weird Tales was launched in 1923 as a showcase for writers of speculative and alternative fiction – in other words, stories that were too bizarre to be published anywhere else. It launched the careers of such authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Robert E. Howard; even Tennessee Williams made his first sale to Weird Tales. The original magazine folded in 1954, but resurfaced over the years in the form of reprint anthologies, original magazines and paperback editions. Weird Tales has been printed regularly since 1988, when it was resurrected by editor-publishers John Gregory Betancourt, Darrell Schweitzer and George H. Scithers.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Scaled-Back DVD Set Announced with the Fan-Favorite '1st Season'
Coming January 24!

In 2004, Universal Studios Home Entertainment released a DVD set of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - The Complete Epic Series, a 5-disc package (all double-sided DVDs) with the complete 2-season run of the show (32 episodes, including 5 double-length special episodes).

The two seasons of the program were very different from each other, with the first 21-episode run (including 3 double-length installments) being based on Earth and having Buck, Wilma, and ambuquad robot Twiki (Felix Silla, The Addams Family's "Cousin Itt" and voiced by Mel Blanc, of "Bugs Bunny" fame) getting their mission directions from Dr. Elias Huer (Tim O'Connor) and the disc-like computer carried by Twiki, Dr. Theopolis (voiced by Eric Server, B.J. and the Bear). The opening credits were narrated by William Conrad (Cannon, Jake and the Fatman, and narrator on The Fugitive).

The second season (11 episodes, with the first two of them being double-length stories) had Buck, Wilma, and Twiki relocated to deep space, on board the starship Searcher, where they were led by Admiral Asimov (Jay Garner) and joined by Dr. Goodfellow (Wilfrid Hyde-White), the alien Hawk (Thom Christopher), and "superior" robot Crichton (voiced by Jeff Davis).

This season was much less loved by fans, and likley has been most memorable for the (in)famous "off-think" scene (do a web search for that, if you're not familiar with it). Since it was relatively short, however, Universal included it in their "Complete Epic Series" DVD release 7 years ago...a collection which is still officially in print as of this writing, and lists for $26.98 SRP. However, it's become much harder to find than it used to be.

Universal has now announced that on January 24th they will release Buck Rogers in the 25th Century - Season 1, a collection of JUST the original Earth-based season with Dr. Huer, Dr. Theopolis. It also includes a galaxy of guest stars that include Pamela Hensley, Henry Silva, Roddy McDowall, Buster Crabbe, Jack Palance, Tim Robbins, Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Markie Post, James Sloyan, Peter Graves, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gary Coleman, Ray Walston, Michael Ansara, Dorothy Stratten, Morgan Brittany, Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Mary Woronov, Anne Lockhart, Dennis Haysbert, Jerry Orbach, Judy Landers, Julie Newmar, and Vera Miles.

These 21 episodes running 1166 minutes come on 6 single-sided DVDs, presented in full screen video, English mono sound, and with subtitles in English, French and Spanish. The original complete series release had no bonus material, and similarly there have been no extras announced for this title, either. Cost for the Season 1 DVDs are $24.98 SRP.

Conan Meets the Academy: Multidisciplinary Essays on the Enduring Barbarian
Edited by Jonas Prida
Available Spring/Summer 2012!

About the Book
In 1932, Robert E. Howard penned a series of fantasy stories featuring Conan, a hulking Cimmerian warrior who roamed the mythical Hyborian Age landscape engaging in heroic adventures. More than the quirky manifestation of Depression-era magazines, Conan the Barbarian has endured as a cultural mainstay for over 70 years. This multidisciplinary collection offers the first scholarly investigation of Conan, from Howard’s early stories, through mid-century novels and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic films, to the 2011 cinematic remake of Conan the Barbarian. Drawing on disciplines such as stylometry, archeology, cultural studies, folklore studies, and literary history, the essays examine statistical analyses of Conan texts, the literary genesis of Conan, later-day parodies, Conan video games, and much more. By displaying the wide range of academic interest in Conan, this volume reveals the hidden scholarly depth of this seemingly unsophisticated fictional character.

Contents
"Hyborian Age Archeology: Unearthing the Historical and Anthropological Foundations of Conan's World"
"Barbarism Ascendant: The Poetic and Epistolary Origins of Conan and Cimmeria"

Fantom Press - Project update 10-13-2011!

I just received the signature pages back from Phil Winslade in the UK and I have Brian Azzarello lined up to sign near the end of the month. This line up of creators has proven to be the most difficult bunch I’ve had to deal with, with Rags Morales being responsible for three months of the delay in releasing the book. I had hopes of being able to get Batman/Doc Savage artist Phil Noto to sign as well, but after agreeing to a few months back, I’ve been unable to get his to respond to any of my attempts to get in contact with him.  If I can’t get in touch with Phil by the time I get the pages back from Mr. Azzarello, I’m afraid we’ll just have to live without his contribution. I still have copies available and with luck, they will be shipping in early November.
The signed edition will be limited to a maximum of 50 copies, but I’ll likely cap the edition at the actual copies ordered by the deadline of October 21st. If you have reserved a copy, please pay for them now  There are still copies available for those who did not reserve a copy previously, but please order within the next week if you want to insure a copy for yourself.
This custom bound volume will match the Showcase Doc Savage hard cover edition and will be limited to 26 copies as well.  17 signers on board for this project with 5 copies remaining.  Projected completion date is mid November.
I received word from Sideshow that the statues are on the way from China and they expect to start shipping around the end of the month from their warehouse in Southern California. The statues will ship directly from Sideshow to customers in the United States. Please check the shipment as soon as you can and inspect the statue for any damage. If there is a problem, please contact me and I’ll deal with Sideshow to get a replacement.   I’ve been promised shipping information from Sideshow and will forward what information to you when I get it. The edition was sold out, but thanks to one party not paying the balance due on their reservation, I’ve put that statue back up for sale to the first interested party.  The prints have been directly mailed to buyers with the exception of foreign shipments. The prints will be included with the statue for international shipments.
I do want to point out that the Doc Savage Radio Adventures CD sets are back in stock and all copies are signed by cover artist Bob Larkin.  A free copy of the Python Isle key chain will also be included with all CD sets ordered.

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011!
The 36th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention will take place October 20-23 2011 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ.  the four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations.  The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive.

The invited guest list looks great so far, led by Ethel and Albert star/creator Peg Lynch.  I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again.  The Mercury Theater's Arthur Anderson, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more.  Local New York talk show legend Joe "Nostalgia King" Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along.  Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders" on old time radio.  The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates.

In addition, Pulp entertainment scholars Anthony Tollin and Martin Grams, Jr. will both host original presentations on pulp entertainment and radio.

Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms.  The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations.  It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform.  On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests.

Friday -  "Funnies Friday: OTR and the Comics" (9th annual "Funny Friday" Comedy panel), hosted by Maggie Thompson and James Gauthier, with Sal Amendola, Michael Kaluta, Dick Ayers, Dennis O'Neil, comic artists
and Anthony Tollin.

Shows scheduled for recreation this year include Let's Pretend, Easy Aces, Gunsmoke, My Favorite Husband, Ethel and Albert, Phil Harris/Alice Faye, Lights Out, and more.

Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $76/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at www.fotr.net.

Please contact Sean Dougherty, publicity coordinator, at 201-739-2541 or SeanDD@optonline.net or @doughertysean on Twitter, or The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention on Facebook for more information.

THE LEOPARD WOMAN by Stewart Edward White

Stewart Edward White is not only famed as a great author, but as an explorer, big game hunter and sportsman as well. Major White is known in Africa as the man who holds the world's lionshooting record, the man who mapped German East Africa for sporting purposes and then turned over his data to the British government at the outbreak of the war, and like performances. He made two expeditions into Central Africa spending in all 22 months in the wilds. He penetrated country never entered by a white man before. He spend months alone among thousands of wild savages and came out unharmed.

Through all his adventures and wanderings, not the least of which is his recent service in the world war with the famous California "Grizzlies" regiment, Major White has been very lucky in escaping serious injury, having had countless narrow escapes from all manner of death in many lands.

"I never went in search of literary material," he remarked upon one occasion. "Deliberately searching for it, going in for adventure solely for the purpose of getting atmosphere and experience to write about, is a sure way not to get it."

In Donald E. Keyhoe’s imaginings, the stormy skies of World War I are filled with giant pterodactyls, mystic fireballs and demon aces.

THE HUMAN ARROW
by Félicien Champsaur, adapted by Brian Stableford

The Human Arrow, written just prior to World War I, is the story of the first non-stop Paris-to-New York flight by rocket-powered plane as it never happened. French engineer Henri Rozal faces tough competition from rivals for the hand of his fiancée, as well as shady dealings from financiers trying to steal his invention. But as the shadow of war looms, is Rozal's utopian dream of a peaceful planet traversed by powerful flying machines fated to turn into an apocalyptic nightmare?

This edition is the first time that the two versions of the story, the original 1917 edition as well as its rewritten conclusion published in 1927, to take into account Charles Lindbergh's flight and the horrors of World War I, have been published in a single volume.

Also included is Champsaur's novella, The Last Man (1885), which describes how a comet increases the oxygen in Earth's atmosphere and causes Paris to revert to a jungle, and Man to an ape-like beast.

SHERLOCK HOLMES vs. JACK THE RIPPER
Edited and adapted by Frank Morlock

Jack the Ripper is one of the most enduring archetypes in criminal fiction. This book presents, for the first time in English, two of the earliest pieces of Ripper fiction ever written in French: Gaston Marot & Louis Péricaud's stage play Jack the Ripper from 1889, and No. 16 of the French pulp series The Secret Files of the King of Detectives (which later became Harry Dickson) from 1908 in which the Great Detective matches his wits against Jack the Ripper.

BAAL: THE DEVIL'S LOVERS
by Renée Dunan, adapted by Brian Stableford

In Baal (1924), the great and seductive sorceress Palmyre teaches her assistant Renée the secret of her magic, including her ability to interact with creatures from other worlds, such as the unspeakable Baal, whose octopus-like form is the three-dimensional projection of an unfathomable four-dimensional entity.

The book includes The Devil's Lovers (1929), a heroic saga about Satanism and Witchcraft that follows the adventures of a poacher and his daring wife in war-torn 16th century France.

These two ground-breaking supernatural thrillers from early feminist writer Renée Dunan, also known for her crime fiction and erotic historical novels, depict witchcraft as having its psychological origins in sexuality, reflecting the repression of the sexual impulses by the social norms of the times. "Highly original works that fully deserve translation for the benefit of fans of modern horror fiction and exotic erotica." Brian Stableford.

Clive Clussler: Devil's Gate (The Numa Files) - Coming November 14th!
Clive Cussler  (Author), Graham Brown (Author)

A Japanese cargo ship cruises the eastern Atlantic near the Azores- when it bursts into flames. A gang of pirates speeds to take advantage of the disaster- when their boat explodes. What is happening in that part of the world? As Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA(r) Special Assignments Team rush to investigate, they find themselves drawn into the extraordinary ambitions of an African dictator, the creation of a weapon of almost mythical power, and an unimaginably audacious plan to extort the world's major nations. Their penalty for refusal? The destruction of their greatest cities.

Filled with the high-stakes suspense and boundless invention unique to Cussler, Devil's Gate is one of the most thrilling novels yet from the grand master of adventure.

I don't often do reviews. Primarily because I just don't have the time. However, sometimes a product comes along that just screams out to be mentioned. The CRIME, MYSTERY, & GANGSTER FICTION MAGAZINE INDEX is one of those products. If you have a serious interest in the pulps, you will absolutely want to have this CD Index. The CD contains a index for each author, title, issue, series, publisher, and artist, as well as a chronological index by author. There is also an Issue Checklist which I find most helpful. You can look up any crime, mystery, or gangster pulp and display a grid that shows the volume and number of each issue and when it was published. There is also a brief history of the magazine and the publishers name and address (when known). Better yet, when you click on the volume and number for an issue, a new screen reveals the full contents of the magazine along with a thumbnail of the cover that links back to the cover database at Galactic Central!  If you are online, a larger cover scan will be available to view. The index is similar to the online Fiction Mags Index.

The CD Index can be used on a Windows of Macintosh PC with a CD-ROM or DVD drive. Although publication in several hardbound volumes is planned for 2012, the hard copy will no doubt be pricey and not as easy to use as the html version that works with your web browser and is now available at an unbelieveable price. This index has been a work-in-progress for quite a few years and Phil Stephensen-Payne, William G. Contento, and Stephen T. Miller have done an astounding job that they can well be proud of. I heartily recommend this product with no reservations.

Curse of the Phantom Shadow
Pulp inspired film project in the works!

The year is 1948 and the United States has a new enemy, The Phantom Shadow. This dark figure has diabolical plans for captured scientist, Dr. Hammond, and his War Department weapons of mass destruction. Upon the Phantom Shadow launching a treacherous missile attack on key locations in the United States, the government takes action.

There is only one man to call, Agent 236, an elite government agent. Agent 236 has been dispatched to launch a rescue.

Along the way, Agent 236 is befriended by a  spunky, sarcastic, gas station attendant who just happens to have pinup girl good looks.  She also just happens to be looking for a little action, and excitement. Luckily, Agent 236 is the man of her dreams. Agent 236 puts the station attendant and her tow truck into service in pursuit of the Phantom Shadow.

Why Are We Raising Money?
After spending the bulk of my personal savings, we are still short of completing our movie. We need to rent a vintage 1940s tow truck, a green screen stage, and bring our cast and crew to our final shooting location in Pahrump, Nevada.  In addition to this we have post-production costs to consider.
We have 75% of our movie's footage in the can. The last 25% is unfortunately the most expensive.

Rewards
As our way of saying thank you, we are offering rewards. Assuming we reach our funding goals, all of the rewards will be sent out January 12th of 2012. The exceptions being movie credits, and the final DVD. These rewards will arrive approximately in May of 2012. (As soon as post-production has been completed.)

Project Intentions
Once our project has been completed, we intend to submit it to many film festivals. More importantly we hope to use this short film as a launch pad to a feature length film with the same characters. Ideally we would like to shoot 3 feature length movies with these characters, and situations. Most importantly, we want a showcase to demonstrate the talent of our cast and crew.

Project History
These characters and situations are the culmination of almost one decade of work. They had their origins in comic book proposals. I have spent the last three years, in many cases working without a crew, assembling props from scratch,  and acquiring our initial footage. This has been a labor of love, passion, and limitless tenacity. As anyone who knows me will attest, I always finish what I start.

Thank you for stopping by our project's page, and we hope you can find it in your hearts (and wallets) to help us in this endeavor!

Doc Con 14 - Saturday, November 12, 2011!

It has been a challenging year this year to prepare for this con, but we finally have some information to get to all of you.
Doc Con 14 will be held at
Courtney Rogers' house in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday, November 12, 2011.
.
Courtney will open his doors at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, with the con officially kicking off at 10 a.m. We will be going until 5 or 6 p.m. After that time, those who would like to stay are invited to “Doc Con after Dark.”

There will be an entrance fee of $20, just like the past three years. This amount will get you a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze #4" that Jay Ryan is feverishly putting together, plus cover lunch. The main food and soft drinks and water will be provided. We will have several activities throughout the day to keep everyone occupied, plus plenty of time for individual and group discussions. It will be our usual great day of fun and fellowship based around Doc Savage.

Jay Ryan will be hosting Friday night activities, which will include going out for dinner and then recording a radio play at his home.
Stay tuned for more information regarding Friday night.

We will also convene for Sunday breakfast for those so inclined.

Here is what you need to do:
— Let us know if you are attending
— We will have a raffle again this year. Those choosing to participate should bring an item or items.
— Bring whatever items you want to give away, sell, or show off
— We are also asking everyone to bring some ancillary food items. Either chips, desserts or other snacks would be great.
Please let us know what you'd like to bring so we can (hopefully) prevent us from getting too much of one thing.
— Bring $20 cash for the entrance fee
— Bring cash (or check) in case there is something you see to buy. Terry Allen will be coming with plenty of Fantom Press merchandise, too.
— Bring your ideas for a short session to discuss Doc Con 15 and future of Doc Con

Thank you for your patience, and we all look forward to seeing each other in November.
Courtney Rogers & William Lampkin

THE CONSUMMATA
Mickey Spillane, Max Allan Collins
Cover art by Robert McGinnis

Compared to the $40 million the cops think he stole, seventy-five thousand dollars may not sound like much. But it’s all the money in the world to the struggling Cuban exiles of Miami who rescued Morgan the Raider. So when it’s snatched by a man the Cubans trusted, Morgan sets out to get it back. A simple favor—but as the bodies pile up...dead men and beautiful women...the Raider wonders what kind of Latin hell he's gotten himself into, and just who or what is the mysterious Consummata?

Begun by mystery master MICKEY SPILLANE in the late 1960s and completed four decades later by his buddy MAX ALLAN COLLINS (Road to Perdition), The Consummata is the long-awaited follow-up to Spillane’s bestseller The Delta Factor—a breathtaking tale of treachery, sensuality, and violence, showcasing two giants of crime fiction at their pulse-pounding, two-fisted best.

At risk: the entire American west . . . and a beautiful young woman . . .

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Radio Archives - NEW Pulp Radio Category has been added!
Radio Archives, well known for high quality audio collections, introduces a new category of Old Time Radio! Are you a fan of fast paced, action packed adventures? Do you enjoy larger than life heroes, over the top villains, and impossible plots and schemes? Whether or not you're a Mystery, Western, Science Fiction,or simply a fan of Adventure and Suspense, Radio Archives has what you're looking for in its new category, Pulp Radio!

Pulp means many things to many people. Historically, Pulp refers to fiction magazines that were printed on cheap wood pulp paper. The paper was coarse with rough edges. Publishers found this cheaper to produce and began turning out magazines that ran around 128 or so pages and only cost a dime. For ten cents, readers could encounter far away lands, lost civilizations, thugs with guns, cowboys and Indians, and anything else fiction writers of the day came up with.

Although first introduced in the 1890s, Pulp magazines really came into their own in the 1930s and 40s. This was due in large part to the popularity of what have come to be known as the Hero Pulps. Take a poll today on what Pulp heroes the public remembers, any that have a clue what Pulp is will likely say, "Doc Savage" or "The Shadow" or "The Spider." Well-versed armchair fans might even rattle off "The Black Bat" or "The Avenger." Hero Pulps provided readers with stories about ideal men fighting for right and justice against insurmountable odds.

Although Hero Pulps are the most fondly remembered by some, Pulp magazines provided the stage for so many other genres. Nearly regardless of a reader's taste in fiction, it could be found in a Pulp magazine. Western, Action Adventure, Sports, Mystery, Crime, Horror, Fantasy, Science Fiction, even Romance Pulps dominated newsstands and kiosks all over America. That is, until the early 1950s when for various reasons, Pulp magazines faded from view.

In an effort to explain why Pulp has had the impact it has, many have come up with definitions of what Pulp is. Most include Pulp being fast paced and plot oriented with clearly defined, larger than life protagonists and antagonists and creative descriptions, clever use of turns of phrase and other aspects of writing that add to the intensity and pacing of the story. Any of that sound familiar, radio Detective fans? Or how about those of you who enjoy a good frontier shootout on your favorite western show? Looking at that definition, it is clear that Pulp had not only an impact on later mediums, but definitely shared characteristics with a source of entertainment that experienced its golden age simultaneously with the Pulps. That entertainment that we now call Old Time Radio.

Like Pulp, Old Time Radio covers many genres and many styles of storytelling. There are shows, though, that fit squarely into what many would consider to be Pulp. Detective programs, particularly, fit the model extremely well. In the space of a little over twenty minutes, radio writers had to introduce the detective, establish the cast of characters, set up the mystery to be solved, throw in one or two red herrings or a fight scene, and then resolve everything. These detectives were tough, heroic men and stood out in one way or another, like Richard Diamond and his singing, Johnny Dollar and his expense account, or Nero Wolfe and his eccentricities. And the bad guys, always some grand plan to dupe money out of someone or even larger schemes. Some would call stories like that plot oriented, fast paced fiction with larger than life heroes and villains. Here at Radio Archives, we call it Pulp Radio.

And Pulp Radio doesn't stop at hard-boiled gumshoes, either! Western lawmen and the desperadoes they tangled with week in and week out on the radio rode the same trails as their Pulp cowboy counterparts. Astronauts and aliens on the airwaves fit the bill for larger than life and fast paced! And even characters that first found life in the Pulps lived even longer thanks to Radio. Pulp Radio is full of mayhem and monsters, good and evil, and stories that still today ring true with Fans of great Heroic Fiction of any medium.

Titles that you'll find in Radio Archives' Pulp Radio section include:

The New Adventures of Michael Shayne - Jeff Chandler's rugged voice adds to the pace and intensity of this Pulp type detective program from beginning to end, bringing Brett Halliday's fictional detective to explosive life!

The Shadow of Fu Manchu - Sax Rohmer's Villain of All Villains continues his life of Tyranny and Evil in this relentlessly fast paced radio show!

The Planet Man - This Sci-Fi show definitely walks the line between Camp and Pulp, but has all the ear markings of excitement, over the top characters, and life and death situations it needs to be Pure Pulp!

Luke Slaughter of Tombstone - Westerns, prime Pulp territory, shined just as brightly in Radio's Golden Age. The adventures of Luke Slaughter have all the toughness, six guns, horses and outlaws that it takes to make a Western tale great Radio Pulp!

If you're a Pulp fan looking for something that sounds like what you love to read, then the shows in Radio Archive's Pulp Section are just what you've been after. The fact that aspects of Pulp can be found in Old Time Radio adds a whole other level of enjoyment for Pulp Fiction readers. Not only can you get the visceral excitement of following adventure on the written page, but you can hear stories in the same vein, tales that make your heart beat faster and even sometimes make your blood run cold. Rapid fire dialogue and matching action, characters that fire the imagination, and everything else you love about Pulp can be found in the shows in Radio Archive's Pulp Radio!

And if you're an Old Time Radio enthusiast intrigued by fast paced, exciting adventures, then you've come to the right place! Detective fans that peruse this new section may find that the same elements that appeal to them in their whodunits also are part and parcel to frontier tales and space operas. Likewise, cowboy aficionados might find just as much pistol shootin' and desperadoes in a mystery or crime show! Not convinced yet? Then hear for yourself by picking up one of the collections in Radio Archives' Pulp Radio section today!

Zorro - Sony hires writers to reboot the movie franchise!
Sony Pictures has tapped TV scribes Matthew Federman & Stephen Scaia to write the studio’s reboot of the Zorro franchise, which won’t be a remake but an origin tale of the comic book icon based on the 2005 Isabel Allende novel. It will be the latest take on the sword-wielding do-gooder following Sony’s 2005 pic The Legend Of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and directed by Martin Campbell. Federman and Scaia are known for their TV work — their credits include Jericho, Warehouse 13 and Human Target and they currently serve as supervising producers on ABC’s Charlie’s Angels. They also just finished writing a Paris-set World War II action drama being developed by Chernin Entertainment and Fox Television Studios for cable. Zorro will be their second feature effort after adapting River Of Doubt, about Teddy Roosevelt’s 1914 trip down the Amazon River, for Jon Turteltaub’s Junction Entertainment. They are repped by CAA and Mosaic.
