L. Golemon: THE SUPERNATURALS -
Now available!
Summer
Place—built at the turn of the twentieth century by one of the
richest and most powerful men in the world. Tucked away in the
pristine Pocono Mountains and used as a summer retreat for the rich
and famous, Summer Place was the description of charm and beauty.
Built to spec, the twenty-four bedrooms and manicured grounds sparkled.
It was truly a home that was as warm and beautiful as any well-appointed
resort. From the Author of the Event Group thrillers! For a retreat that boasted the most glamorous setting in all of America, the gable roofed mansion was the epitome of tranquility…until 1925 when something went horribly wrong. Once homey and inviting, Summer Place had now become a haven for evil incarnate. A dark presence came to the yellow and white trimmed mansion, and it was now collecting the souls it needed to survive and thrive amongst the mountains that surround it. Closed down by the owners and not lived in since the start of World War II, Summer Place has been maintained in its pristine condition, waiting for the team of men and women to discover its dark secret. In a national television broadcast reminiscent of Orson Wells War of the Worlds broadcast of 1939, America will witness on live television the coming of true evil, and it will be up to Professor Gabriel Kennedy, a disgraced Psychologist who had once faced the evil inside of Summer Place and came away a true believer in its extraordinary power. Now, along with the paranormal ghost hunting team; The Supernaturals, Kennedy will draw out and try to end the haunting that has been going on at Summer Place for over a hundred years. You are asked to bear witness to the battle of wills as the thing inside of Summer Place will not go down without a fight! |

GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER - Now Smites Evil—via Kindle!
Puritan Swordsman’s Adventures Debut on Amazon’s Popular e-Reader White Rocket Books proudly announces the release in Kindle format of Gideon Cain: Demon Hunter, the multi-award-nominated Sword-and-Sorcery anthology co-created by Van Allen Plexico (SENTINELS; LUCIAN) and Kurt Busiek (Dark Horse’s CONAN; ASTRO CITY), among other New Pulp luminaries. The book contains seven stories that see the dour Puritan battling evil both demonic and all-too-human, on land and sea, in deserts and forests and frozen wastes. Having witnessed the travesty of the Salem Witch Trials first hand, Cain leaves his home and family behind to fulfill his divinely-decreed destiny. Now, armed only with his flintlock pistols, imposing mortuary sword engraved with angelic runes, and his unshakeable faith in his holy cause, Cain relentlessly pursues the arch-demon Azazel, corruptor of Mankind, across the globe. Along the way, he clashes with pirates, savages, monsters and madmen. |

LUCIAN: Dark God’s Homecoming - Now Available for Kindle!
Acclaimed SF/Action/Mystery Pulp Debuts on Popular E-Reader White Rocket Books proudly announces the release in Kindle format of LUCIAN: Dark God’s Homecoming, the acclaimed Science Fiction/Action/Mystery pulp by Van Allen Plexico (SENTINELS; GIDEON CAIN). Drawing inspiration from the fantastic pulp-SF tales of Roger Zelazny (Chronicles of Amber), Jack Vance (The Dying Earth) and Philip Jose Farmer (World of Tiers), LUCIAN introduces us to the Dark Lord of the Golden City, an arrogant and selfish god whose insurgency to rule in Heaven failed and led to his exile on the human-occupied worlds of the far-future. When circumstances conspire to bring him back to his celestial City, Lucian discovers that most of his fellow gods and goddesses have been murdered and that, as the devil, he is of course the prime suspect. Now he’s on the run, barely a step ahead of his vengeful brothers and sisters, seeking evidence to prove his innocence (at least this once!) and to find the real killer—before his fellow gods catch him and end his immortal existence once and for all. Along the way, he becomes saddled with a beautiful and resourceful starship captain, who may force him to confront the hard truths about himself—if he doesn’t kill her first! |

Says Van Allen Plexico of this new
electronic edition: “The response this book has received in its paperback
format, from Airship 27, has been more than gratifying. Readers seem
to love this black sheep of a character and find themselves enjoying rooting
for the bad guy! Now that it’s available on Kindle, I’m hoping it finds
a whole new audience that will take the Dark Lord into their hearts!” Pulp Fiction Reviews said of LUCIAN: “Fans of Jack Vance and Roger Zelazny will eat this up. Good stuff start to finish." Van Allen Plexico is best known for the popular SENTINELS series of contemporary superhero pulp novels, as well as for the sword-and-sorcery anthology GIDEON CAIN: DEMON HUNTER (with Kurt Busiek and others) and the ASSEMBLED! books, exploring the history of Marvel Comics’ Avengers. In 2011 he was nominated for Pulp Story of the Year (by the Pulp Factory, for “The Red Flame of Death,” from GIDEON CAIN) and Writer of the Year (by PulpArk). White Rocket Books is a leader in the New Pulp movement, publishing exciting action and adventure novels and anthologies since 2005, in both traditional and electronic formats. White Rocket books have hit the Amazon.com Top 15-by-Genre and have garnered praise from everyone from Marvel Comics Editor Tom Brevoort to Kirkus Reviews. Pulp Adventurecon - November 5, 2011!
During 2001 and 2002, Philadelphia-based illustrator Eric Battle
and Brooklyn-based writer Alex Simmons landed a dream assignment – working
on the adventures of one of the greatest fictional heroes of all time, Tarzan
of the Apes. As the writer and illustrator of the syndicated Tarzan newspaper
strip, their job was to provide action and thrills to millions of fans the
world over. The fact that Simmons and Battle are both African-American
presented them with both a challenge and a unique opportunity to present
the legendary character in a new light, while retaining his original identity.Eric Battle and Alex Simmons will appear on Saturday, November 5th, 2011, at the annual Pulp AdventureCon, held at the Ramada Inn in Bordentown, NJ. There will be vendors with rare pulp magazines, movie posters, and vintage paperbacks. There are also showcased new publications that revive both the heroes and tradition of pulp fiction. Pulp magazines were an inexpensive form of entertainment in the days before the internet, cell phones, and even television. They first appeared with Argosy in 1897, flourished in the 1930s, and ultimately died or reinvented themselves in the 1950s. Many of the fictional heroes we see in movies today; Zorro, The Shadow, and Doc Savage, started in the Pulps. Tarzan first appeared in the pages of The All-Story Magazine in 1912, ninety-nine years ago. Some literary historians have questioned Edgar Rice Burrough’s portrayal of Africans. The original pulp magazines were products of their era – and, as a result, there are portrayals of ethnic groups that seem stilted by today’s standards. “Tarzan was among the iconic fictional characters that I was exposed to as a kid,” says Alex Simmons. “I turned to writing, began writing children’s books. In the mid-1990s, I began writing and self-publishing Blackjack, a series about an African-American soldier of fortune. I met a senior editor at United Features Syndication – she enjoyed my work on Blackjack and asked if I would be interested in writing Tarzan. "Most assuredly, part of me was looking at the way Tarzan had been handled in the early days. Whatever negative things had been done, there were some positives, and I decided that here was an opportunity for me to portray this character in a story, as a writer and a person of color, that I could proudly stand beside, without feeling that I had belittled my people or myself.” Alex Simmons has written and created a number of juvenile mysteries, written three movie novelizations for Disney and three biographies for Steck-Vaughn, including one on Denzel Washington. He has also written numerous comic book stories for DC Comics, Archie Comics, and Graphic Classics, as well as his own original creations. Simmons is the founder of the annual Kids Comic Con, founder and curator of the Color of Comics Exhibition. Eric Battle has illustrated many of the Marvel and DC universes’ biggest characters, including Spider-Man, Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Green Lantern. His work on the Tarzan strips is second to none, and marked a milestone in the Tarzan character's history, as the first African-American artist to draw the Sunday strip. The Pulp AdventureCon will be held on November 5th, 2011 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ. The show runs from 10AM to 5PM. Admission is $5.00. Weird Tales - Update
on the new publisher (Marvin Kaye)! Weird Tales, America’s first and foremost magazine of gothic fantasy, science fiction and horror, has been purchased by Nth Dimension Media, Inc., co-founded by veteran writer and science fiction book anthologist Marvin Kaye and director/producer John Harlacher. Kaye is the latest in a series of distinguished editors who have guided “The Unique Magazine” through nearly nine decades. Under the direction of current editor-in-chief Ann VanderMeer the publication earned a Hugo Award, the most prestigious honor in the sci-fi world. Publisher Harlacher plans to have VanderMeer edit one final issue before turning over the reins to Kaye in early 2012. Kaye says he is “interested in continuing and expanding the splendid work” of VanderMeer. “When I take over the helm,” he adds, “I hope Ann will continue her involvement as a consulting and contributing editor.” Kaye describes his own vision for Weird Tales as “Janus-faced,” honoring the long history of the publication while continuing its legacy of discovering new and unusual fiction. Content will feature works of well-known, midlist and new writers, and a few reprints of classic stories. Beginning in February 2012 each issue will have a theme, though Kaye states, “the usual assortment of stories and poetry will be included along with tales that fit the governing conceit.” The new Weird Tales will be open to nearly all sorts of genre fiction, including absurdist humor, fantasy, horror, mystery and surrealism. “The only kind of story that probably won’t fit would be neo-realism,” says Kaye, “though even there I’m willing to be convinced otherwise.” Kaye, the author of sixteen novels and editor of over 30 genre fiction anthologies, has a long personal history with Weird Tales. Fascinated by the “creepy-looking” magazine that his sister Dorothy brought into their Philadelphia home, he was an avid fan by the age of nine. He edited two anthologies celebrating the magazine’s distinctive brand of fiction: “Weird Tales: the Magazine That Never Dies,” published in 1988, and “The Best of Weird Tales: 1923,” published in 1997. Kaye also edited H.P. Lovecraft’s Magazine of Horror, which will remain an ongoing portion of Weird Tales. No novice to the world of fantasy and horror, Harlacher is the co-director of “Nightmare,” an interactive theatre experience widely recognized as New York’s most horrifying haunted house. This year’s motif, a creepy rendition of familiar fairy tales, has been described by Fangoria horror magazine as “entirely spooky and full of nasty, nasty fun…imaginative, and yes, hilarious and repulsive.” Weird Tales was launched in 1923 as a showcase for writers of speculative and alternative fiction – in other words, stories that were too bizarre to be published anywhere else. It launched the careers of such authors as H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, and Robert E. Howard; even Tennessee Williams made his first sale to Weird Tales. The original magazine folded in 1954, but resurfaced over the years in the form of reprint anthologies, original magazines and paperback editions. Weird Tales has been printed regularly since 1988, when it was resurrected by editor-publishers John Gregory Betancourt, Darrell Schweitzer and George H. Scithers. Subscribe Basic Weird: Four issue subscription for $20 (U.S. Only) Deluxe Weird: Four issues plus a cosmically horrific Lovecraftian bonus $30 (U.S. Only) International Weird also available Digital Weird: Four-issue ebook subscription for $11.95 |

Fantom Press - Project
update 10-13-2011!
I just received the signature pages back from Phil Winslade in the UK and I have Brian Azzarello lined up to sign near the end of the month. This line up of creators has proven to be the most difficult bunch I’ve had to deal with, with Rags Morales being responsible for three months of the delay in releasing the book. I had hopes of being able to get Batman/Doc Savage artist Phil Noto to sign as well, but after agreeing to a few months back, I’ve been unable to get his to respond to any of my attempts to get in contact with him. If I can’t get in touch with Phil by the time I get the pages back from Mr. Azzarello, I’m afraid we’ll just have to live without his contribution. I still have copies available and with luck, they will be shipping in early November. The signed edition will be limited to a maximum of 50 copies, but I’ll likely cap the edition at the actual copies ordered by the deadline of October 21st. If you have reserved a copy, please pay for them now There are still copies available for those who did not reserve a copy previously, but please order within the next week if you want to insure a copy for yourself. This custom bound volume will match the Showcase Doc Savage hard cover edition and will be limited to 26 copies as well. 17 signers on board for this project with 5 copies remaining. Projected completion date is mid November. I received word from Sideshow that the statues are on the way from China and they expect to start shipping around the end of the month from their warehouse in Southern California. The statues will ship directly from Sideshow to customers in the United States. Please check the shipment as soon as you can and inspect the statue for any damage. If there is a problem, please contact me and I’ll deal with Sideshow to get a replacement. I’ve been promised shipping information from Sideshow and will forward what information to you when I get it. The edition was sold out, but thanks to one party not paying the balance due on their reservation, I’ve put that statue back up for sale to the first interested party. The prints have been directly mailed to buyers with the exception of foreign shipments. The prints will be included with the statue for international shipments. I do want to point out that the Doc Savage Radio Adventures CD sets are back in stock and all copies are signed by cover artist Bob Larkin. A free copy of the Python Isle key chain will also be included with all CD sets ordered. |

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011! The 36th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention will take place October 20-23 2011 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ. the four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations. The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive. The invited guest list looks great so far, led by Ethel and Albert star/creator Peg Lynch. I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. The Mercury Theater's Arthur Anderson, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more. Local New York talk show legend Joe "Nostalgia King" Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along. Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders" on old time radio. The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates. In addition, Pulp entertainment scholars Anthony Tollin and Martin Grams, Jr. will both host original presentations on pulp entertainment and radio. Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms. The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations. It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform. On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests. Friday - "Funnies Friday: OTR and the Comics" (9th annual "Funny Friday" Comedy panel), hosted by Maggie Thompson and James Gauthier, with Sal Amendola, Michael Kaluta, Dick Ayers, Dennis O'Neil, comic artists and Anthony Tollin. Shows scheduled for recreation this year include Let's Pretend, Easy Aces, Gunsmoke, My Favorite Husband, Ethel and Albert, Phil Harris/Alice Faye, Lights Out, and more. Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $76/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at www.fotr.net. Please contact Sean Dougherty, publicity coordinator, at 201-739-2541 or SeanDD@optonline.net or @doughertysean on Twitter, or The Friends of Old Time Radio Convention on Facebook for more information. |

I don't often do reviews. Primarily because I just don't have the time. However, sometimes a product comes along that just screams out to be mentioned. The CRIME, MYSTERY, & GANGSTER FICTION MAGAZINE INDEX is one of those products. If you have a serious interest in the pulps, you will absolutely want to have this CD Index. The CD contains a index for each author, title, issue, series, publisher, and artist, as well as a chronological index by author. There is also an Issue Checklist which I find most helpful. You can look up any crime, mystery, or gangster pulp and display a grid that shows the volume and number of each issue and when it was published. There is also a brief history of the magazine and the publishers name and address (when known). Better yet, when you click on the volume and number for an issue, a new screen reveals the full contents of the magazine along with a thumbnail of the cover that links back to the cover database at Galactic Central! If you are online, a larger cover scan will be available to view. The index is similar to the online Fiction Mags Index. |

Doc Con 14 -
Saturday, November 12, 2011!
It has been a challenging year this year to prepare for this con,
but we finally have some information to get to all of you.Doc Con 14 will be held at Courtney Rogers' house in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday, November 12, 2011. . Courtney will open his doors at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, with the con officially kicking off at 10 a.m. We will be going until 5 or 6 p.m. After that time, those who would like to stay are invited to “Doc Con after Dark.” There will be an entrance fee of $20, just like the past three years. This amount will get you a copy of "The Big Book of Bronze #4" that Jay Ryan is feverishly putting together, plus cover lunch. The main food and soft drinks and water will be provided. We will have several activities throughout the day to keep everyone occupied, plus plenty of time for individual and group discussions. It will be our usual great day of fun and fellowship based around Doc Savage. Jay Ryan will be hosting Friday night activities, which will include going out for dinner and then recording a radio play at his home. Stay tuned for more information regarding Friday night. We will also convene for Sunday breakfast for those so inclined. Here is what you need to do: — Let us know if you are attending — We will have a raffle again this year. Those choosing to participate should bring an item or items. — Bring whatever items you want to give away, sell, or show off — We are also asking everyone to bring some ancillary food items. Either chips, desserts or other snacks would be great. Please let us know what you'd like to bring so we can (hopefully) prevent us from getting too much of one thing. — Bring $20 cash for the entrance fee — Bring cash (or check) in case there is something you see to buy. Terry Allen will be coming with plenty of Fantom Press merchandise, too. — Bring your ideas for a short session to discuss Doc Con 15 and future of Doc Con Thank you for your patience, and we all look forward to seeing each other in November. Friends of Old Time Radio Convention -
October 20-23, 2011! Raider wonders what kind of Latin hell he's gotten himself into, and

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |

Radio Archives -
NEW Pulp Radio Category has been added! Radio Archives, well known for high quality audio collections, introduces a new category of Old Time Radio! Are you a fan of fast paced, action packed adventures? Do you enjoy larger than life heroes, over the top villains, and impossible plots and schemes? Whether or not you're a Mystery, Western, Science Fiction,or simply a fan of Adventure and Suspense, Radio Archives has what you're looking for in its new category, Pulp Radio! Pulp means many things to many people. Historically, Pulp refers to fiction magazines that were printed on cheap wood pulp paper. The paper was coarse with rough edges. Publishers found this cheaper to produce and began turning out magazines that ran around 128 or so pages and only cost a dime. For ten cents, readers could encounter far away lands, lost civilizations, thugs with guns, cowboys and Indians, and anything else fiction writers of the day came up with. Although first introduced in the 1890s, Pulp magazines really came into their own in the 1930s and 40s. This was due in large part to the popularity of what have come to be known as the Hero Pulps. Take a poll today on what Pulp heroes the public remembers, any that have a clue what Pulp is will likely say, "Doc Savage" or "The Shadow" or "The Spider." Well-versed armchair fans might even rattle off "The Black Bat" or "The Avenger." Hero Pulps provided readers with stories about ideal men fighting for right and justice against insurmountable odds. Although Hero Pulps are the most fondly remembered by some, Pulp magazines provided the stage for so many other genres. Nearly regardless of a reader's taste in fiction, it could be found in a Pulp magazine. Western, Action Adventure, Sports, Mystery, Crime, Horror, Fantasy, Science Fiction, even Romance Pulps dominated newsstands and kiosks all over America. That is, until the early 1950s when for various reasons, Pulp magazines faded from view. In an effort to explain why Pulp has had the impact it has, many have come up with definitions of what Pulp is. Most include Pulp being fast paced and plot oriented with clearly defined, larger than life protagonists and antagonists and creative descriptions, clever use of turns of phrase and other aspects of writing that add to the intensity and pacing of the story. Any of that sound familiar, radio Detective fans? Or how about those of you who enjoy a good frontier shootout on your favorite western show? Looking at that definition, it is clear that Pulp had not only an impact on later mediums, but definitely shared characteristics with a source of entertainment that experienced its golden age simultaneously with the Pulps. That entertainment that we now call Old Time Radio. Like Pulp, Old Time Radio covers many genres and many styles of storytelling. There are shows, though, that fit squarely into what many would consider to be Pulp. Detective programs, particularly, fit the model extremely well. In the space of a little over twenty minutes, radio writers had to introduce the detective, establish the cast of characters, set up the mystery to be solved, throw in one or two red herrings or a fight scene, and then resolve everything. These detectives were tough, heroic men and stood out in one way or another, like Richard Diamond and his singing, Johnny Dollar and his expense account, or Nero Wolfe and his eccentricities. And the bad guys, always some grand plan to dupe money out of someone or even larger schemes. Some would call stories like that plot oriented, fast paced fiction with larger than life heroes and villains. Here at Radio Archives, we call it Pulp Radio. And Pulp Radio doesn't stop at hard-boiled gumshoes, either! Western lawmen and the desperadoes they tangled with week in and week out on the radio rode the same trails as their Pulp cowboy counterparts. Astronauts and aliens on the airwaves fit the bill for larger than life and fast paced! And even characters that first found life in the Pulps lived even longer thanks to Radio. Pulp Radio is full of mayhem and monsters, good and evil, and stories that still today ring true with Fans of great Heroic Fiction of any medium. Titles that you'll find in
Radio Archives' Pulp Radio section include:
The New Adventures of Michael Shayne - Jeff Chandler's rugged voice adds to the pace and intensity of this Pulp type detective program from beginning to end, bringing Brett Halliday's fictional detective to explosive life! The Shadow of Fu Manchu - Sax Rohmer's Villain of All Villains continues his life of Tyranny and Evil in this relentlessly fast paced radio show! The Planet Man - This Sci-Fi show definitely walks the line between Camp and Pulp, but has all the ear markings of excitement, over the top characters, and life and death situations it needs to be Pure Pulp! Luke Slaughter of Tombstone - Westerns, prime Pulp territory, shined just as brightly in Radio's Golden Age. The adventures of Luke Slaughter have all the toughness, six guns, horses and outlaws that it takes to make a Western tale great Radio Pulp! If you're a Pulp fan looking for something that sounds like what you love to read, then the shows in Radio Archive's Pulp Section are just what you've been after. The fact that aspects of Pulp can be found in Old Time Radio adds a whole other level of enjoyment for Pulp Fiction readers. Not only can you get the visceral excitement of following adventure on the written page, but you can hear stories in the same vein, tales that make your heart beat faster and even sometimes make your blood run cold. Rapid fire dialogue and matching action, characters that fire the imagination, and everything else you love about Pulp can be found in the shows in Radio Archive's Pulp Radio! And if you're an Old Time Radio enthusiast intrigued by fast paced, exciting adventures, then you've come to the right place! Detective fans that peruse this new section may find that the same elements that appeal to them in their whodunits also are part and parcel to frontier tales and space operas. Likewise, cowboy aficionados might find just as much pistol shootin' and desperadoes in a mystery or crime show! Not convinced yet? Then hear for yourself by picking up one of the collections in Radio Archives' Pulp Radio section today! |

Sony Pictures has tapped TV scribes Matthew Federman & Stephen Scaia to write the studio’s reboot of the Zorro franchise, which won’t be a remake but an origin tale of the comic book icon based on the 2005 Isabel Allende novel. It will be the latest take on the sword-wielding do-gooder following Sony’s 2005 pic The Legend Of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and directed by Martin Campbell. Federman and Scaia are known for their TV work — their credits include Jericho, Warehouse 13 and Human Target and they currently serve as supervising producers on ABC’s Charlie’s Angels. They also just finished writing a Paris-set World War II action drama being developed by Chernin Entertainment and Fox Television Studios for cable. Zorro will be their second feature effort after adapting River Of Doubt, about Teddy Roosevelt’s 1914 trip down the Amazon River, for Jon Turteltaub’s Junction Entertainment. They are repped by CAA and Mosaic. |
