Abingdon Pulp
& Paperback Conference - Saturday,
June 21 and Sunday, June 22! Curt Philips is hosting a small SF conference here in Abingdon, VA on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. (We'll also have some kind of social function on the evening of Friday, June 20 for those who may want to arrive early but I'm still looking at what that will be. Several interesting alternatives - mostly involving food - present themselves.) It's called the Abingdon Pulp & Paperback Conference and yes, this is short notice, but I invite any of you who might like to attend to come to Abingdon and join us. I expect to have a website up soon and will certainly post that link here. I already have intentions to attend in hand from two writers and I'm hoping for more. I'm also looking for additional book dealers who'd like to attend. If anyone here would be interested in being a dealer, or would just like to bring some surplus pulps, fiction magazines or books along to sell or trade, we'll have a place for you too. The weekend will be one of relaxed book-hunting and book conversation with like minded people, and as the name indicates, our main focus will be on pulp magazines and paperback books, vintage or otherwise. I hope that we'll have a couple of panal discussions with accomplished writers, publishing professionals and book collectors, I'm hoping to arrange a special display by a certain local artist whom you've all heard of, and there'll be some local attractions available for your enjoyment including walks in the 230 year-old Town of Abingdon, visits to two major flea markets where *I* find great old books just about every weekend, you can, if you wish, take in a play at the world famous Barter Theater located just down the street, and if it ever stops snowing here in town I'll go out and pick out a good place for us to have a Saturday night banquet. So the focus for the Abingdon Pulp & Paperback Conference will be books, food, visiting the attractions of the beautiful southwest Virginia mountains and hanging out with other book people. I expect this to be a relatively small gathering with a mixture of local fans and folks from across the region (this is where you all come in...). I hope that many of you will be able to join us in Abingdon. Details, prices (cheap!) and so forth should be available right here and on the event website very soon. I'll let you know. As I said, I'm looking for a few more dealers of good books. If you're such a dealer, e-mail me and we'll see if we can talk you into coming to Abingdon. I'm also looking for any suggestions from any of you about other things we might do at the conference and other folks who might like to attend. I can be contacted directly at the email address below. Arthur C. Clarke - Passed away in his adopted home of Sri Lanka on March 19. Arthur C. Clarke, a visionary science fiction writer who won worldwide acclaim with more than 100 books on space, science and the future, died Wednesday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, an aide said. He was 90. Clarke, who had battled debilitating post-polio syndrome since the 1960s and sometimes used a wheelchair, died at 1:30 a.m. after suffering breathing problems, aide Rohan De Silva said. Clarke moved to Sri Lanka in 1956, lured by his interest in marine diving which he said was as close as he could get to the weightless feeling of space. "I'm perfectly operational underwater," he once said. Co-author with Stanley Kubrick of Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey," Clarke was regarded as far more than a science fiction writer. He was credited with the concept of communications satellites in 1945, decades before they became a reality. Geosynchronous orbits, which keep satellites in a fixed position relative to the ground, are called Clarke orbits.

I can be contacted directly at the address and phone number below. Curt Phillips Absarka_prime@comcast.net

BUCK
ROGERS - Dynamite Entertainment to launch new comic book series! For almost 80 years, more
than any other, the name Buck Rogers has simply meant "The Future". And now that future is coming to you from Dynamite Entertainment! Before caped heroes were leaping tall buildings, Buck was spanning the stars . . . and the centuries. A man accidentally thrust into an extraordinary future, Buck is science fiction's first superstar and one of our culture's most enduring icons. In its original version, Buck Rogers ran as a comic strip continuously for 38 years in over 400 newspapers. True to his adventurous reputation, Buck is also known for his star turns in radio, movie serials, and television series. And now, comics and more from Dynamite Entertainment! Flint Dille, a prominent animation and videogame creator as well as the grandson of Buck's originator, John Flint Dille, oversees the Buck Rogers franchise. "My family and I have always considered the Buck legacy a sort of ‘sacred trust'," Dille says, "and we are absolutely confident that this collaboration with Dynamite honors that trust." Nick Barrucci, Publisher and President of Dynamite Entertainment, is very enthusiastic to be working on one of his "dream projects since childhood," and to be working with Flint and his family legacy in that process. Barrucci proudly confirms that fan favorites, Alex Ross and John Cassaday, will be integral to Dynamite's Buck launch, with both Alex and John providing character designs, Alex providing a cover to issue #1, and John serving as regular series cover artist starting with issue #1. "Dynamite's job right now," Barrucci says, "is to find the writer and the artist who share my and my team's respect and affection for Buck Rogers, and who can help bring Buck, once again, into an exciting new future." Dynamite's agreement with the Dille Estate allows for the creation of Buck Rogers comics, collections, including classic material, comics-based fine art prints, posters, action figures, trading cards, statues, and other high-end collectibles. Look for promotional art and announcements at www.dynamiteentertainment.com in the coming weeks and at San Diego ComiCon this summer.

Dave Stevens - Passed away Monday, March 10th. Dave Stevens, an artist best known for creating "The Rocketeer" comic book, which reflected a fascination with Bettie Page that brought the 1950s pin-up queen renewed attention, has died. He was 52. Stevens died Monday at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Calif., from complications related to treatment for leukemia. In 1981, Stevens was working as a commercial illustrator when a friend asked him to contribute a story to another comic book. His "throwaway idea," as he called it, was a succinct ode to 1930s-style, pulp-fiction adventures and movie serials. The comic -- in which a stunt pilot battles evil after finding a rocket-powered backpack -- became a cult success. A decade later it was made into the live-action Disney movie "The Rocketeer" with Billy Campbell as the title character. Dave Stevens website is at http://www.davestevens.com/
Dave Stevens Memorial
Show on Geekerati Radio As you may have heard recently, one of our own, Artist/Creator Dave Stevens has passed on after a lengthy bout with leukemia. Dave was noted for being the creator of the comic book turned movie, "The Rocketeer", and the artist responsible for rekindling interest in 1950's fetish model Miss Betty Page. The fact is that Dave - in his variety of interests including comics, film, movie serials, pinups, jazz, comic strips, aviation and cartoons - touched all of our lives in one way or another. He was a master craftsman who diligently labored over every drawing, making it the best work it could be, expressing the love he felt inside for his subject. To celebrate the man and his work and to increase awareness of the disease which took him too soon, We here at the Geekerati podcast are dedicating our next show to Dave Stevens. We would like anyone who has stories about working with Dave, meeting him at conventions, or his work to call into our live show on Monday, March 17th, 2008 (7pm PST) to share. If you know anyone who has worked with Dave Stevens please forward this email so that they may participate. Geekerati is a featured show of the BlogTalkRadio network (and a part of the BlogCritics channel on BTR), a network that is revolutionizing the way podcasting is done on the internet. The shows initially air live and then are stored on iTunes as podcasts. You can listen to archived episodes at www.blogtalkradio.com/geekerati or look up Geekerati on iTunes.

University in Huntington, W. Va. From
the Nashville SF Club Newsletter, forwarded by Curt Phillips Mike
Allen seeks stories about Nelson Bond to share at the April opening of Marshall
University's Nelson Bond Room. "I waited to confirm some details before posting about this. Nelson Bond, whom I was lucky enough to count as a friend and mentor, died in November 2006 at age 97. His alma mater, Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., has been at work assembling a replica of his Roanoke, Va. office in their special collections library. The library is holding a reception April 18 and 19 to commemorate the opening of the Nelson Bond Room, and much to my astonishment and awe, they have asked me to be the guest speaker. To those who aren't familiar with Nelson's work, his Wikipedia entry sums up his career fairly adroitly, though it lacks many of the dramatic details, such as the lawsuit filed against him by Orson Welles over the script for the movie "The Night America Trembled" or how his dramatic adaptation of George Orwell's Animal Farm led to him also being entitled to royalties from Sir Peter Hall's musical adaptation —- Orwell's widow insisted on it, even though Nelson had nothing to do with Hall's production. SFWA chose him as Author Emeritus in 1998; there is an irony in that, in that while Nelson did write science fiction (and fantasy tales, westerns, detective stories and radio plays) he was never comfortable with being labeled a "science fiction writer." Nelson was a practical man; he wrote for the markets that paid, period, and when the markets quit paying good money he moved on. To those who are familiar with his work, I would love, if at all possible, to hear any Nelson Bond stories you might have, about him or his stories, that I could share when I speak at this event. Of course, to stand out from the crowd and sell, one needed a gimmick. Into this newly exuberant market came a publishing house named Ace Books, with the seductive promise of two books for the price of one. It also had the eye-catching premise of two separate covers, joined at the spine like Siamese twins. Finished with one book? Flip the paperback over and begin again with a new novel, complete with its own package. It was something completely different -- and it sold! ART
SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original
pulp and paperback art. For the fourth year in a row, the art show is sponsored
by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustration-magazine.com). If you have any art
you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact
us – we’re particularly looking for Doc Savage and other pulp
hero art. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. Our art show will feature
a major display of original art by award-winning artist Ed Emshwiller! For the Eighth annual Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April
25-27, 2008), we're pleased to announce that our art show will feature a major
display of original art by award-winning artist Ed Emshwiller, better known as
Emsh. Emsh, who along with his wife Carol is the subject of the recently
published "Emshwiller: Infinity x Two: The Life & Art of Ed & Carol Emshwiller"
by Lois Ortiz, began his art career in the twilight of the pulp era, working there
briefly before moving over to create 100s of covers for science fiction digests
and paperbacks. Among these were many of the classic Ace doubles covers.
He was one of the true greats in science fiction illustration in the 1950's and
early 1960's, winning multiple Hugo Awards as Best Artist, before essentially
retiring from the field (save for occasional covers) and concentrating on experimental
film making. For this year's Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, we're
pleased to announce that our art show will be displaying approximately 50 original
Emsh cover paintings -- one of the largest displays of Emsh's original paintings
ever assembled -- drawn from several private collections. For more info on the convention, visit our website, www.windycitypulpandpaper.com. AUCTION: The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm. If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. More info, including the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/). 2008 Windy City
film program FRIDAY* - 16mm, all other films on DVD 11:30 am: The Bat Whispers (1930). Based on the novel by Mary Roberts Rinehart (from the play by Rinehart and Avery Hopwood), originally serialized in Flynn’s Magazine during July and August of 1926. This marvelously creepy old-dark-house chiller features a grotesque costumed villain that, reportedly, was one of Bob Kane’s inspirations for Batman. Chester Morris, later to gain fame as Boston Blackie, plays a no-nonsense detective sent to an abandoned country estate in search of the Bat, who covets a fortune in embezzled money secreted in the mansion by a crooked banker who turns up dead. This groundbreaking early talkie was shot in both conventional 35mm and 65mm widescreen versions. We’re showing the rarely seen widescreen version. 01:00 pm: The Spider’s Web (1938). Chapters One through Three. The Master of Men leaped from the pages of his Popular Publications pulp magazine to the silver screen in this fast-paced 1938 serial, a non-stop orgy of gun-blazing action. We’re running all 15 pulse-pounding episodes this weekend. Wealthy criminologist Richard Wentworth (played by Warren Hull) disguises himself as both the Spider and underworld habitué Blinky McQuade while attempting to foil the Octopus, a ruthless criminal mastermind whose campaign of terrorization and destruction is aimed at bending the entire country to his will! With the lovely Iris Meredith as Wentworth’s sweetheart, Nita Van Sloan. 02:15 pm: Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975). Like the Spider, Doc Savage made his first appearance on the nation’s newsstands in 1933. As part of our 75th-birthday tribute to this pulp-fiction superstar, we’re showing not one but two versions of the 1975 George Pal production starring former Tarzan Ron Ely as Lester Dent’s Man of Bronze. This afternoon we’re running the original theatrical version; tomorrow you can see an unauthorized revision reportedly edited by a Doc fan to remove scenes deemed objectionable or irritating. 04:00 pm: The Spider’s Web. Chapters Four through Six. 05:00 pm: Savage Fury (1956). Feature-length version of a 1935 serial, Call of the Savage, adapted from Otis Adelbert Kline’s “Jan of the Jungle,” originally serialized in Argosy during April and May of 1931. Noah Beery Jr. stars as Jan, the jungle boy who grows up wearing a wristband on which, unbeknownst to him, is inscribed a formula that will cure infantile paralysis. The formula is coveted by two unscrupulous scientists (Walter Miller and Frederic MacKaye), who plan to collect a half-million dollar grant offered for its development. They follow Jan and his companions, Mona (Dorothy Short) and Borno (Harry Woods) to the lost city of Mu, where perilous adventures await them! Great fun, but not to be taken seriously. 09:00 pm: Phantom Lady* (1944). Based on the masterpiece of suspense written by “William Irish” (Cornell Woolrich) and serialized as “Phantom Alibi” in Flynn’s Detective Fiction during 1942, prior to publication in hardcover as Phantom Lady. Unhappily married Scott Henderson (Alan Curtis) goes out for a night on the town with an unnamed woman he meets in a bar. He returns home to find his wife slain, and the police arrest him for murder. Scott’s inability to produce or even name his anonymous pick-up renders his alibi useless, so he’s convicted and sentenced to death. It remains for his loyal secretary (Ella Raines) and best friend (Franchot Tone) to find the phantom lady before the sentence is carried out. This movie, brilliantly photographed by Woody Bredell, established many of the visual conventions of film noir, a sub-genre made to order for the doom-laden fever dreams committed to pulp paper by the haunted Woolrich. A not-to-be-missed classic, not available on DVD and unseen on TV for many years. 10:30 pm: Outlaws of the Prairie* (1938). Based on Harry F. Olmsted’s “Trigger Fingers,” a novelette published in the June 1934 issue of Dime Western. As a boy, Dart Collins witnesses his father’s murder at the hands of cruel rancher Bill Lupton. When the lad swears to get revenge, Lupton cuts off Dart’s trigger fingers. The boy grows up to become a Texas Ranger (played by Charles Starrett) and learns how to “fan” a six-gun, constantly practicing in anticipation of the day his trail crosses that of his father’s killer. This grim little “B” Western also features the Sons of the Pioneers and introduces several songs that became cowboy-music classics: “Song of the Bandit,” “Open Range Ahead,” “My Saddle Pal and I,” and the haunting “Blue Prairie.” Briefly made available to TV in the mid ‘50s, this entertaining little horse opera disappeared from view nearly a half-century ago. SATURDAY 10:00 am: The Maltese Falcon (1931). The first film version of Dashiell Hammett’s genre-transcending whodunit, serialized in Black Mask during 1929 and 1930 prior to its publication in hardcover by Knopf. Ricardo Cortez, a Latin-lover type, is slightly miscast but appropriately hard-boiled as private eye Sam Spade. Silent-screen star Bebe Daniels plays Brigid O’Shaughnessy, with character actor Dudley Digges as Casper Gutman and Dwight Frye as Wilmer. If you’ve only seen the Humphrey Bogart version of Falcon, you owe it to yourself to give this earlier adaptation. Although not as perfectly cast or executed as the highly regarded 1941 remake, it’s a darn good little movie in its own right. 11:30 am: The Spider’s Web. Chapters Seven through Nine. 12:30 pm: Doc Savage. This is the aforementioned “fan edit” of the film. It’s not all that much shorter than the theatrical version, but the cuts and alterations make a significant difference, as you’ll see. 02:15 pm: The Spider’s Web. Chapters Ten through Twelve. 03:15 pm: We’re in the Legion Now (1936). Based on J. D. Newsom’s “The Rest Cure,” published in the April 1934 issue of Adventure. Reginald Denny and Vince Barnett play small-time gangsters on the run. Winding up in Morocco, they join the French Foreign Legion in a misguided attempt to avoid danger. Silent-screen star Esther Ralston lends her patrician beauty to this odd little movie, a modestly budgeted comedy-adventure. To enhance the film’s marketability, producer George Hirliman had Legion shot and printed in “Hirlicolor,” his personal version of a limited-palette color process employed by some studios before Technicolor became the industry standard. Later 16mm prints, struck for rental libraries and TV stations, were printed in black & white. We’re running a DVD mastered from the sole surviving 35mm color print, which shows some wear and signs of deterioration. 04:15 pm: The Spider’s Web. Chapters Thirteen through Fifteen. 11:00 pm: (time approximate, pending completion of the Auction): The Ringer* (1952). Based on Edgar Wallace’s novel (serialized in Detective Story Magazine during April and May of 1925, prior to hardcover publication) and the play he adapted from it. One of Wallace’s most enduring characters, the Ringer was a master of disguise who dispensed vigilante justice while always keeping one step ahead of Scotland Yard. This film, the third British-made adaptation, stars Herbert Lom as the crooked lawyer responsible for the suicide of the Ringer’s sister—and the vigilante’s next target! A Windy City exclusive: This film was shot with two different endings—one intended for the U. S. market and one for the U. K. For the first time in this country, The Ringer will be seen with both endings! WEBSITE: The con’s website is www.windycitypulpandpaper.com. We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the con, so please check it for the most recent information. And while you’re there, make sure to sign up and join the forums, which allows you to post pulp news of interest to the site, whether related to the con or otherwise. SPACE VULTURE by Gary K. Wolf and Archbishop
John J. Myers Now available! Gary
K. Wolf, Creator, Roger Rabbit Roger Rabbit Creator and Archbishop of Newark Team Up To Write Science Fiction Novel In what might be the oddest literary pairing of all time, Gary K. Wolf, noted science fiction author and screenwriter, best known for creating the Roger Rabbit characters and Toontown, and John J. Myers, Catholic Archbishop of Newark, have teamed up to co-write an action/adventure science fiction novel entitled "Space Vulture." The book is an homage to "Space Hawk," the first science fiction novel the two read as schoolboys. "Space Vulture" recently sold to Tom Doherty Associates for publication by their Tor imprint in March 2008. In the fast paced story, heroic Intergalactic Marshal Victor Corsaire and cowardly con man Jack Edward join forces with a beautiful and courageous widow and her two young sons to battle Space Vulture, the most villainous marauder in the cosmos. Wolf and Myers have been close friends since childhood. They grew up together in the small farm town of Earlville, Illinois. Wolf's father ran the pool hall there. Myers' father was the town milk man. "We were in the seventh grade," recalls Wolf. "We were both big readers, and we both liked science. John came to me with a book he'd discovered. He told me I had to read it because it was science AND it was fiction. It was science fiction. That book was Anthony Gilmore's pulp classic 'Space Hawk.' I read it and loved it just as much as John had. We were hooked. After that, we sought out and read all the science fiction books we could find. I can honestly say that 'Space Hawk' changed my life. Without 'Space Hawk' there would be no Roger Rabbit." "For as far back as I can remember," adds Archbishop Myers, "reading has been one of my favorite pastimes. I still read voraciously. 'Space Hawk' made as much of an impression on me in my early years as it did on Gary. We can both still quote passages from that book verbatim. Nowadays my reading is mainly theology although I do make time for fiction and even science fiction which I still greatly enjoy." "One day, almost as a joke" says Wolf, "I told John we ought to collaborate on a science fiction novel of our own, an homage to 'Space Hawk,' doing a story as appealing to science fiction readers of today as 'Space Hawk' was to us. To my great joy, John said, 'Let's do it.'" The two wrote the novel over a five year period collaborating by phone, e-mail, and face-to-face during Wolf's frequent visits to Newark from his Boston home. "We had great fun writing 'Space Vulture' and it shows," says Wolf. "It's just as adventuresome and exciting as 'Space Hawk.'" "Collaborating with Gary on 'Space Vulture' has been satisfying for me on several levels," says Archbishop Myers. "It has given me the opportunity to create an exciting, interesting, and morally principled tale in one of my favorite genres. It has also provided the opportunity to renew and deepen one of my oldest and dearest friendships." Archbishop Myers has published extensively in the scholarly and religious press. This is his first work of fiction. Wolf has published five previous novels including 'Who Censored Roger Rabbit' which formed the basis for the Spielberg/Disney blockbuster movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.' Agent Mickey Freiberg of The Acme Literary Agency brokered the six figure deal with Tom Doherty Associates editor Moshe Feder. More information on the book and the authors can be found at www.spacevulture.com. Tor Books, Hardcover, 336 pages, $24.95, On sale 3/4/2008 | Get Autographed Copies! Exclusive Web Site Offer!
