Airship 27 Production and Cornerstone Book
Publishers - Now available! After months of planning and hard work, Airship 27 Production and Cornerstone Book Publishers are thrilled to announced the release of their latest pulp project; BROTHER BONES. A gun wielding specter of justice haunts the dark streets of Cape Noire in seventales of horror, suspense and supernatural thrills by pulp writer Ron Fortier ("The Green Hornet", "Rambo","Terminator", "Daughter of Dracula", etc.). In the grand tradition of the Shadow and the Spider comes the most bizarre avenger of them all, BROTHER BONES. Cover and illustrations by Rob Davis ("Star Trek":The Next Generation","Star Trek:Deep Space Nine,""Scimitar", etc.). Several years ago we published a similar volume featuring another "grim" avenger. Sadly we were not able to acquire reprint rights to the character. We did own the stories and so the decision was made to alter them, change the names and add a seventh, never before published story, Ghost Train. Fans should be aware that six of these stories are altered reprints from that earlier book. It is our belief that this edition is a far superior product. The book is now available from Amazon at the link below and fine bookstores throughout the country. Trade paperback, 176 pages, $16.95. Available from Amazon.com

PIGEONS FROM HELL #1 (of 4) - Coming in April! Joe R. Lansdale (Writer), Nathan Fox (Artist), and Dave Stewart (Colors) Joe R. Lansdale puts a new spin on an old classic with this four-part adaptation of master-storyteller Robert E. Howard's classic tale of terror Pigeons from Hell. THE PAINTINGS OF J. ALLEN ST. JOHN - Coming in
April / May!
Vanguard's second volume devoted to the work of J. Allen St. John concentrates on the artist's full-color fantasy, science-fiction and adventure paintings for novels and Pulp-magazines for famous authors, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jack Williamson, Robert E. Howard and more. St. John is the original grand master illustrator of Tarzan, John Carter of Mars (now in major motion picture development by Pixar), and others. His illustrations inspired generations of later fantastic artists including Roy G. Krenkel, Jeffrey Jones and Frank Frazetta. St. John will always be recognized as the first, and most important illustrator of Burroughs' writings and this book is produced with the full endorsement and cooperation of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. Also featured are essays by renowned science-fiction author Jack Williamson; Danton Burroughs, Lin Carter, and illustrators Vincent Di Fate, and Frank Frazetta. St. John began his career by studying the old master in the museums of Paris around 1880. Returning to America, his notoriety among Fine Art enthusiasts developed with recognition from the Society of American Artists and Metropolitan magazine in 1889. The artist went on to become a professor of drawing and painting at both The American Academy of Art and the Chicago Art Institute, but his greatest notoriety came as he ventured into the colorful world of Pulp magazine and adventure book illustration. For the readers of fantasy, science fiction and adventure, St. John surpassed the work of his famous contemporaries Frank Schoonover, James Montgomery Flagg, and N. C. Wyeth, and led the way for future masters, including Roy G. Krenkel, the Brothers Hildebrandt, and Frank Frazetta. Softcover, 8x11, 160 pages, $24.95 Vanguard Productions THE PAINTINGS OF J. Wildside Press:
THE NIGHT WIND'S PROMISE - Coming in
April!
Wildside Press reports that THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE will be available in about two months! “THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE”
by Varick Vanardy Written by the “father
of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published
by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank
A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span
ran from 1913 to the early 1920s. Bingham Harvard, alias the Night Wind, used his prodigious strength (roughly 5 times that of the average man) to rescue himself, friends and family from various plots of “frame-ups,” extortion and outright physical violence. His exploits were serialized in Munsey’s THE CAVALIER and ALL-STORY WEEKLY just a few months after the appearance of Tarzan in October 1912 and wrapping up just before the first appearance of Zorro on August 1919 by the same publisher. Upon the close of a pulp magazine serial, the installments were bound and reissued in hardcover format. There were a total of four hardcover novels starring the Night Wind: ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND,” THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND, THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE, and LADY OF THE NIGHT WIND. In 1923 the first novel was adapted for the silent screen and released with much popular appeal as ALIAS “THE NIGHT WIND.” After almost 100 years out of print, ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND was re-released by Wildside Press in March 2007. The Wildside Press edition of the sequel: THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND was released in September 2007. Now the third installment: THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE will soon see reprint. Re-typeset - but not revised or abridged in any way, this edition comes with an informative introduction by Christopher Yates, editor of the Wildside Press editions of the Night Wind series, explaining that the Night Wind is the archetype for today’s most popular heros. In addition, the hardbound and paperback formats of this book sport the color cover from one of the magazine installments from the original run of THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE in ALL-STORY WEEKLY magazine from October 26, 1918. ALIAS THE NIGHT WIND and THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND are available now from Barnes & Noble.com, Amazon.com and Diesel eBooks in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats Hardcover, $29.95 [ISBN: 1434400018, 1434401456] Trade paperback, $14.95 [ISBN: 1434400107, 1434401502] THE NIGHT WIND’S PROMISE will soon be available from the same retailers, in the same formats, at the same noted prices. Stay tuned for the pending release of the next Night Wind title from the original series and a new, exciting fifth installment with a foreword by Win Scott Eckert and cover and interior illustrations by Mark Maddox... | The original

Echos de Cimmérie - Coming 2nd quarter 2008! ÉCHOS
DE CIMMÉRIE HOMMAGE À ROBERT ERVIN HOWARD 1906 – 1936 (ECHOES OF CIMMERIA, HOMAGE TO ROBERT ERVIN HOWARD) A book edited by Fabrice TORTEY Solomon Kane, El Borak, Bran Mak Morn, Kull the Barbarian King, Conan the Cimmerian and many other characters, all unforgettable creations that sprang from the fertile mind of Robert Ervin Howard. A pioneer of heroic fantasy, the Texan writer has excelled in many genres: tales of adventure, fantasy and horror, sports and western stories, poetry. At the time when Two-Gun Bob finds a second life in France, the Éditions de l'Œil du Sphinx are pleased to pay homage to Robert E. Howard and display his many facets as the man, the boxer, the storyteller, the poet. Renowned specialists and dedicated fans of Howard have all gathered to explore the epic universe of the Cross Plains Bard. This opus, under the direction of Fabrice Tortey, opens on an overview of Robert E. Howard’s life, completed by more specific biographical studies by acknowledged experts such as Rusty Burke with La dernière lettre / The Note, Glenn Lord with Herbert Klatt: le quatrième mousquetaire / Herbert Klatt: the Fourth Musketeer and The Junto, or Chris Gruber who shares with us his passion both for boxing and the creator of Steve Costigan in Howard et la fabrique de glace / Howard at the Ice House. Four texts of Robert E. Howard are published here for the first time in France: two fragments (Le Tueur / The Slayer; Sous l‘éclat impitoyable du soleil… / Beneath the Glare… ) and two poems (Les Cellules du Colisée / The Cells of the Coliseum et Comme un bruit sourd à ma porte / A Dull Sound as of Knocking). Introduced by Don Herron, a series of essays analyzes different aspects of the Texan’s opus: Le Sens du récit chez Robert E. Howard / The Narrative Sense of Robert E. Howard by Simon Sanahujas Bob Howard ou le pouvoir du regard intérieur / Bob Howard or the power of the inner look by Argentium Thri'ile Robert E. Howard: pionnier des lettres/Robert E. Howard / Facing Chthulu : the Adventurer’s Club by Patrice Allart Solomon Kane et le racisme : une étude en noir et blanc / Solomon Kane and racism : a study in black and white by Olivier Legrand Des rites impies de sadisme et de sang. Le réveil de l'archaïque chez Howard, Lovecraft et Vere Shortt / An unhallowed ritual of cruelty and sadism and blood: The revival of the archaic in Howard, Lovecraft and Vere Shortt by Michel Meurger Un nouveau monde, ou l’Almuric de Robert E. Howard / A New World, or the Almuric of Robert E. Howard by Rémy Lechevalier and Jacques Bergier ou l'homme qui découvrit aussi Robert E. Howard / Jacques Bergier, or The Man Who Also Discovered Robert E. Howard by Joseph Altairac. This thick volume is concluded with a bibliography of Howard’s works published in France, compiled by Simon Sanahujas. Many photographs of Bob Howard, his family and friends, open for us a vista of a past cut short all too soon. This anthology also contains the works of Howard’s main illustrators in France: foremost is Christian Broutin, with his drawings for “Phoenix on the Sword” in Planète magazine, then Philippe Druillet who illustrated Conan for Édition spéciale, and of course Jean-Michel Nicollet whose covers for Titres SF and the Nouvelles Éditions Oswald have been the French readers’ companions in their discovery of Two-Gun Bob. The cover is by the great american illustrator Frank Frazetta. Softcover, 22.5 x 17 cm, text in French, about 400 pages 35 € per copy. 2008! Buster Crabbe - A Biofilmography Jerry Vermilye Buster Crabbe. Mention his name, and chances are that there will be a question like “Buster Crabbe: Didn’t he play Tarzan?” Of course, Crabbe did portray that celebrated jungle hero, but he only did so once. This athlete-turned-actor went on to create a lengthy and successful career in several areas of show business. Crabbe’s chief claim to fame, aside from his Olympic gold medal (for the 400-meter freestyle event in 1932), rests in the trio of movie serials in which he played the popular science-fiction hero Flash Gordon. In fact, Crabbe was the only actor to play the roles of Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers, the top three pulp action heroes of the 1930s. Crabbe carved out a career that would also include more than 100 B-movies and program Westerns, a TV adventure series, and a successful physical fitness enterprise. All of this and more is detailed in the work, which includes a complete filmography providing cast and crew information for each of his 103 feature films and serials. - Coming Spring/Summer 2008! H. Beam Piper - A Biography John F. Carr Series Editors Donald E. Palumbo and C.W. Sullivan III H. Beam Piper is one of science fiction’s most enigmatic writers. In 1946 Piper appeared seemingly from out of nowhere, already at the top of his form. He published a number of memorable short stories in the premier science fiction magazine of the time, Astounding Science Fiction, under legendary editor John W. Campbell. Piper quickly became friends with many of the top writers of the day, including Lester Del Rey, Fletcher Pratt, Robert Heinlein and L. Sprague de Camp. Piper also successfully made the turn from promising short story writer to major novelist, authoring Four-Day Planet, Cosmic Computer, Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen and Little Fuzzy, which was nominated for a Hugo award. Even those who counted Piper among their friends knew very little about the man or his life as a railroad yard bull in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This biography illuminates H. Beam Piper, both the writer and the man, and answers lingering questions about his death. Appendices include a number of Piper’s personal papers, a complete bibliography of Piper’s works, and an essay on Piper’s Terro-Human Future History series. ISBN 978-0-7864-3375-9 photos, appendix, notes, bibliography, index Hardcover, 7x10, $39.95

IDW Publishing - Rogue Angel
and Mack Bolan comics to be published! IDW Publishing and Gold Eagle Books® announce agreement to create comics with mystical swords and blazing bullets Starting in February, explosive pulp adventure takes on a whole new meaning when IDW Publishing and Gold Eagle Books (www.readgoldeagle.blogspot.com/) release the first issue of their newly formed publishing partnership—Rogue Angel: Teller of Tall Tales, an original comic book tale featuring Gold Eagle’s bestselling prose heroine, Annja Creed, the daring archeologist and modern heir to Joan of Arc’s mystical sword. And the action and adventure will pick up even more steam in April with the release of Don Pendleton’s The Executioner: The Devil’s Tools #1, featuring the immensely popular and long-running action hero, Mack Bolan. Rogue Angel: Teller of Tall Tales, a five-issue miniseries, is scripted by Harvey Award-winning writer/editor Barbara Randall Kesel (Hellboy: Seed of Destruction), illustratedby Renae De Liz (Nightmare World), and inked and colored by Ray Dillon (Noble Causes). Rebecca A. Wrigley (Disney Feature Animation) will provide covers for the series, and the debut issue will also feature a variant cover by Rogue Angel novelcover artist Tim Bradstreet (Punisher). In this miniseries, Annja’s drive to explore unrecorded, shadowy history leads her to Virginia City in search of a rumored manuscript that could change the public perception of Mark Twain forever. Don Pendleton’s The Executioner: The Devil’s Tools is written by popular Mack Bolan novelist Douglas Wojtowicz, with interiors by SL Gallant (Marvel Adventures) and colors by Luis Antonio Delgado (Gene Simmons House of Horrors). Rebecca A. Wrigley will be lending her talents to the covers here, as well. Mack Bolan, a.k.a. the Executioner, has been the inspiration for countless payback warriors since the series’ inception in 1969. In The Devil’s Tools, Bolan returns in an explosive five-issue mini-series that pits him against a conglomerate of enemies who are representative of the Executioner’s many literary conflicts—from his War against the Mafia to his battles with the KGB in the ‘80s, and modern organized crime and terrorism. PIGEONS FROM HELL #1 (of
4) - Coming in April! Joe R. Lansdale (Writer), Nathan Fox (Artist), and Dave Stewart (Colors) Joe R. Lansdale puts a new spin on an old classic with this four-part adaptation of master-storyteller Robert E. Howard's classic tale of terror Pigeons from Hell. Set in the deep south, Pigeons tells the story of a damned house with a wicked past whose vile form casts a shadow of death on all who dare to enter. At dusk, as the sun slumps below the horizon, scores of pigeons can be seen flocking from the house in waning sunlight. The pigeons, they say, are the souls of the damned escaping from the very bowels of Hell itself. Joe R. Lansdale (author of such works as Bubba Ho-Tep, The Nightrunners, and The Drive-In) is no stranger to comics, having worked on Batman, The Lone Ranger, Jonah Hex, and Robert E. Howard's Conan. He is joined by comics newcomer Nathan Fox. Together Lansdale and Fox are a powerhouse of visual storytelling, perfectly suited for the dark and dismal world of Robert E. Howard's horror classic Pigeons from Hell. Legendary horror aficionado Joe R. Lansdale puts a new spin on an old classic! Full Color, 32 pages, $2.99 Dark Horse Comics

Tarzan Musical - Coming in January 2009! A new stage production of the Disney musical Tarzan — based on the animated film of the same name — will debut in January 2009 at Atlanta's Theater of the Stars before playing several other theatres. The new production, which will feature the Phil Collins Broadway score and the David Henry Hwang book, will boast direction and choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, scenic design by Kenneth Foy, aerial design by Paul Rubin and lighting design by Ken Billington. Additional members of the creative team will be announced shortly. Following the Atlanta run, Tarzan will then play the other co-producing theatres: American Musical Theatre of San Jose, CA, at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts (February); North Carolina Theatre in Raleigh, NC, at the Progress Energy Center (March); and Dallas Summer Musicals in Dallas, TX, at the Music Hall at Fair Park (April). In a statement Theater of the Stars' Chris Manos (producer) and Nick Manos (president) said, "We are delighted with the collaboration between Theater of the Stars and our three co-producing partners on the stage production of Tarzan. One of the best known stories of all time will once again spring to life on stage with unforgettable music by the legendary Phil Collins. We are excited to introduce this exceptional show to our theatre-loving communities across the country." Tarzan opened at the Richard Rodgers Theatre May 10, 2006, and played its final performance July 8, 2007, after 35 previews and 486 regular performances. The cast featured Josh Strickland in the title role with All Shook Up's Jenn Gambatese as Jane. The musical marked the Broadway directorial debut for Bob Crowley, who also designed the show. Tony Award winner David Henry Hwang wrote the musical's book based on both the Disney film and the original Edgar Rice Burroughs story "Tarzan of the Apes." The creative team also included Meryl Tankard (choreography), Pichón Baldinu (aerial design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), John Shivers (sound design), Paul Bogaev (music producer/vocal arrangements) and Doug Besterman (orchestrations). Tarzan, according to press notes, "tells the classic tale of a shipwreck that leaves an infant boy orphaned on the shores of West Africa. The helpless baby is adopted and raised by the mate of the leader of a tribe of gorillas who is grieving the loss of her baby. As he grows and matures, the boy yearns for acceptance from his ape father and to discover the reason for his uniqueness. Eventually he encounters his first human — Jane Porter, a curious young explorer — and all of their worlds are transformed." Source: Playbill.com

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTION TEAMS WITH CORNERSTONE
BOOK PUBLISHERS As of the start of 2008, Wild Cat Books has ceased printing titles produced by Airship 27 Productions. During the past two years, WCB had joined with Airship 27 in releasing ten original pulp books, both anthologies and novels that proved to be highly successful and began a new trend in pulp publishing. Having divergent goals for the future, the parting was mutually agreed upon by all. We here at Airship 27 are grateful to WCB for all their support in the past and wish them continued success. To assure the continued availability of those books and guarantee the production of newer titles, Airship 27 Productions is pleased to announce our new partnership with Cornerstone Book Publishers. The first book resulting from this merger, a novel titled WITCHFIRE, was released several months ago. Plans are for Airship 27 to completely re-edit their older WCB titles, to include adding new features and covers, and release them via Cornerstone Book Publishers. These will be labeled as reprint editions. The partnership is also very excited about continuing the release of new titles in established series. The first such will be the fourth Captain Hazzard thriller, CAVEMEN OF NEW YORK by Ron Fortier, now in post-production. Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are dedicated to producing only the most exciting, thrilling, all new pulp adventures ever set to purple prose.
Altus
Press: TRIPLE DETECTIVE - Now available! TRIPLE DETECTIVE
- Three novels in ONE magazine! Phantom Detective - Norman Daniels’ “The Happiest Hour Murders” with restored text. The Black Bat - Stewart Sterling’s “The Lady of Death” with restored text. The Secret Agent “X” in “The Stolen Formula” - first American publication in English. One of the most popular titles of its day, TRIPLE DETECTIVE early on carried some terrific stories. The magazine was so popular that it lasted long after most titles had folded, continuing until the Fall 1955 issue. Some interesting stories ended up in the later issues after the other titles ceased, and it’s likely that a number of lost hero pulp stories ended up here as well. Unfortunately, many of the later issues contained reprints of earlier published stories. With the release of the new series, three important stories are included in the first issue for the pulp fan. Norman Daniels’ “The Happiest Hour Murders” was written as a Phantom Detective entry in 1934, but rejected, and published later with all reference to the Phantom deleted removed from the story. When the Black Bat folded in 1953, Stewart Sterling’s “The Lady of Death” was left unpublished, and appeared later, with all traces of the Black Bat removed. These two stories have been restored to their original characters and published here for the first time. The Secret Agent “X” story, “The Stolen Formula” was originally written and published in Greece in 1950, and this is its first American publication in English. TRIPLE DETECTIVE is being published in the pulp format of old, and for the pulp collector, and fan of the character pulps, this will quickly become a collector’s item in itself. Basically, these are three “lost” stories from the heyday of the character pulps. 96 pages, 6.63" x 10.25", perfect binding, black and white interior ink, $14.95 Visit the Altus Press website. In my house in London, I followed this routine exactly, apart from the cocktails, the lunch and the snorkeling.” |

SPACE VULTURE by Gary
K. Wolf and Archbishop John J. Myers Coming in March 2008! Gary
K. Wolf, Creator, Roger Rabbit Roger Rabbit Creator and Archbishop of Newark Team Up To Write Science Fiction Novel In what might be the oddest literary pairing of all time, Gary K. Wolf, noted science fiction author and screenwriter, best known for creating the Roger Rabbit characters and Toontown, and John J. Myers, Catholic Archbishop of Newark, have teamed up to co-write an action/adventure science fiction novel entitled "Space Vulture." The book is an homage to "Space Hawk," the first science fiction novel the two read as schoolboys. "Space Vulture" recently sold to Tom Doherty Associates for publication by their Tor imprint in March 2008. In the fast paced story, heroic Intergalactic Marshal Victor Corsaire and cowardly con man Jack Edward join forces with a beautiful and courageous widow and her two young sons to battle Space Vulture, the most villainous marauder in the cosmos. Wolf and Myers have been close friends since childhood. They grew up together in the small farm town of Earlville, Illinois. Wolf's father ran the pool hall there. Myers' father was the town milk man. "We were in the seventh grade," recalls Wolf. "We were both big readers, and we both liked science. John came to me with a book he'd discovered. He told me I had to read it because it was science AND it was fiction. It was science fiction. That book was Anthony Gilmore's pulp classic 'Space Hawk.' I read it and loved it just as much as John had. We were hooked. After that, we sought out and read all the science fiction books we could find. I can honestly say that 'Space Hawk' changed my life. Without 'Space Hawk' there would be no Roger Rabbit." "For as far back as I can remember," adds Archbishop Myers, "reading has been one of my favorite pastimes. I still read voraciously. 'Space Hawk' made as much of an impression on me in my early years as it did on Gary. We can both still quote passages from that book verbatim. Nowadays my reading is mainly theology although I do make time for fiction and even science fiction which I still greatly enjoy." "One day, almost as a joke" says Wolf, "I told John we ought to collaborate on a science fiction novel of our own, an homage to 'Space Hawk,' doing a story as appealing to science fiction readers of today as 'Space Hawk' was to us. To my great joy, John said, 'Let's do it.'" The two wrote the novel over a five year period collaborating by phone, e-mail, and face-to-face during Wolf's frequent visits to Newark from his Boston home. "We had great fun writing 'Space Vulture' and it shows," says Wolf. "It's just as adventuresome and exciting as 'Space Hawk.'" "Collaborating with Gary on 'Space Vulture' has been satisfying for me on several levels," says Archbishop Myers. "It has given me the opportunity to create an exciting, interesting, and morally principled tale in one of my favorite genres. It has also provided the opportunity to renew and deepen one of my oldest and dearest friendships." Archbishop Myers has published extensively in the scholarly and religious press. This is his first work of fiction. Wolf has published five previous novels including 'Who Censored Roger Rabbit' which formed the basis for the Spielberg/Disney blockbuster movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.' Agent Mickey Freiberg of The Acme Literary Agency brokered the six figure deal with Tom Doherty Associates editor Moshe Feder. More information on the book and the authors can be found at www.spacevulture.com. Tor Books, Hardcover, 336 pages, $24.95, On sale 3/4/2008 |
