Doc Savage - New comic book adventures appear to be on the horizon!
DC Comics is reportedly negotiating for the rights to publish Doc Savage comics again.
The news comes from an interview with veteran artist Paul Gulacy on Newsarama.com.
Gulacy was asked by interviewer Michael Kronenberg "What characters and genres would you like to work on?"
He responded "I've got first dibs on Doc Savage at DC once the legalities are ironed out. That would be fun."
Gulacy is one of my favorite artists and would be a good Doc Savage artist in my opinion.  Now DC needs to get someone good like Will Murray to write the book. Hopefully DC is negotiating for The Shadow as well!

Havoc by Jack DuBrul - Available in bookstores October 3rd!
On a stormy night in 1937, the German zeppelin Hindenburg cuts through the clouds over rural New Jersey. On board, a madman has traveled across the Atlantic bearing a safe holding a secret so terrible that it may change the course of history. His efforts to protect his cargo have led him to commit murder, but the most dangerous part of the journey still remains—the arrival at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. In a moment of clear thinking, the murderer throws the safe overboard, thinking that he will return for it later. The conflagration at landing destroys that plan and the safe recedes into history.

Seven decades later, mining engineer Philip Mercer is in the Central African Republic searching for a precious metal used in the manufacture of cell phones. In the face of a mounting civil war, Mercer tries to help local villagers escape from rebel forces. Along the way, he meets up with Cali Stone, an attractive field researcher for the CDC. This particular village suffers from one of the highest rates of cancer in the world. All that saves them from execution at the hands of the rebel troops is the intervention of an unknown military force. Once back in the states, Mercer’s detective work leads him to the long-lost safe and the cryptic letter inside: Dear Albert, I believe I have succeeded. The element you seek does exist in nature. This letter launches Mercer on the most spectacular adventure of his career, one that will leave a nation in flames and a city in ruin, and reveal the truth behind three thousand years of legend.

Nevertheless, we three were happy. We had taken Shirzad Mir from the hands of Jani Beg, who had marked him for death."  — thus runs the account of Abdul Dost as recorded in "Rose Face."

Darrell Richardson, 1918 - 2006
Sad news posted by Denis McHaney:

Darrell Richardson, legendary collector and fan, co-founder of FAX publishers, and author of nearly seventy-five books, passed away late Tuesday afternoon, from complications of a number of physical ailments.

Darrell was a retired Baptist minister, famous for some of his achievements in the Christian world.
Darrell was also a big fan of Robert E. Howard, naming him among his top five favorite pulp authors. Darrell was a lifelong collector of pulps, books, and original art. Many fans/collectors specialize in just one or two areas of collecting, but Darrell was a reknowned authority on many writers and different fields. He was especially known among fans of Zane Grey, Max Brand, and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

PULP CULTURE: THE ART OF FICTION MAGAZINES - Coming in December!
by Frank M. Robinson & Lawrence Davidson
From its origins in the late nineteenth century, when adventure stories reigned, through almost six decades of slinking sleuths, galloping ghouls, nitty-gritty gals, and invincible warriors, the pulp magazine transported readers to new frontiers of the mind. The proving ground for scores of writers and illustrators who went on to achieve great fame, these publications helped popularize authors such as Dashiell Hammett, Ray Bradbury, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Taken collectively, they now provide a panorama of some sixty years of illustration and social commentary. Winner of the "Pop Culture Book of the Year" by the Independent Publisher's Association, Pulp Culture is the most comprehensive compilation ever published on the subject, and is a must for graphic artists, fiction lovers, and anyone who appreciates the art of pulp fiction's golden age.
Softcover, 11x10, 208 pages, Full Color,  SRP: $29.95.
The publisher is Collectors Press.
According to John Locke:  This is a revised edition in which a few images not credited in the original hardcover edition have now been identified, e.g. Gloria Stoll, who wasn't well-known when PULP CULTURE was originally published. One ADVENTURE cover mentioned in the text but not shown will now be shown. Most important will be the inclusion of Rex Layton's index.  Thanks to John Locke for the additional information!

Robert E. Howard Bibliography - "The Neverending Hunt" by Paul Herman
THE NEVERENDING HUNT is the first major bibliography of REH to see print since THE LAST CELT in 1975.
This volume is hardback, a serious quality binding, with jacket.
Around 630 pages, virtually all data, all in 10 point, no artwork.
This volume has perhaps double the amount of information that was in
THE LAST CELT, as a LOT of REH publishing and discoveries have occurred since 1973, the cut off date for THE LAST CELT.

This volume is split into two main sections: The Works and The Publications.
The Works includes the following listings:
  • Prose Index, including stories, articles, plays, etc. There are separate listings for English and non-English publication citations
  • Verse Index, with both English and non-English publications included together; and,
  • Letters Index, also with English and non-English publications included together.
The Publications are split into six listings:
  • Books in English
  • Periodicals
  • Anthologies
  • Chapbooks and other unusual formats
  • A sampling of books in non-English languages
  • A sampling of comics
This is the current results of over 25 years of hunting information, and includes data from folks like Glenn Lord, Patrice Louinet, David Gentzel, Dennis McHaney, and a slew of others over the years. It is an enormous amount of data, updated through around 8/1/2006.

Also included at the end is a previously unpublished complete REH story "Over the Rockies in a Ford", as well as a few "Best Of" lists by various REH scholars.

The first printing will be by Hermanthis Press, and limited to 100 copies, signed and numbered.
As a number of these will be sent out as gifts, there will be perhaps 80-90 of these available for sale, and Paul Herman is taking pre-orders now. The price is $50, which includes shipping. PayPal, cashiers check, or money order only.
PayPal and contact via paul.herman@halliburton.com

If you have a particular number you want, please let Paul know as soon as possible.
#1-10 are reserved for Paul, and #13 is already promised.
Note that there will possibly be a second printing by Hermanthis, depending on how the first printing sells.
Likely starting around the first of the year, printing will move over to Wildside, for POD versions. The price of these versions is unknown at this time, but if you'd rather wait for that version (and credit card availability, Diamond Distributors, etc.), you certainly could.

Lansdale continues to give Timothy Truman the most hard-hided sword-and-sorcery scenes ever drawn. Amidst the burning desolation of Stygia, Conan has acquired a camel, a drunken companion, and objects of great power coveted by a wizard whose greed is only rivaled by his hate. What Conan seeks is profit, but he will take a fight—especially if it means teaching a dark sorcerer about the merciless ways of Cimmerian steel.

Sculptor Tony Cipriano, well-known for many projects for Dark Horse and others, has looked to illustrator Cary Nord's art for his inspiration. Exacting in its detail and ornamentation, a'whirl with weaponry and animation, this piece brings forward a sculptural interpretation of the "fatal beauty" that delivers the goods. And then some.

TWO GUN BOB: A CENTENNIAL STUDY OF ROBERT E. HOWARD
Edited by Benjamin Szumskyj
September 2006: 0-9771734-5-3: Pb: $15.00
Robert E. Howard is enjoying a renaissance of interest in his centennial year, and rightly so. Of the triumvirate of Weird Tales authors, only Howard has been so long misunderstood, and his works so thoroughly adulterated, as to permit of little serious study. In fact, some of us here at Hippocampus Press have neglected even to read Howard ourselves, because no definitive editions were available. With the new recently released editions of his fiction, however, we have tasted the waters, and come into the fold of Howard enthusiasts. Towards this end we have commissioned a critical study of his entire body of work, edited by the outspoken and often controversial Benjamin Szumskyj. Like Howard himself, this is a volume that will evoke a variety of strong emotions, perhaps even by our mere announcement of it. Love it or hate it, this volume will not be ignored -- and we are convinced that it will withstand even the most cynical and jaundiced critical evaluation to stand on its own merits. Hippocampus Press boldly steps into the fray with TEXAS REAVER.

PulpCon 36 - Guests of Honors: Glenn Lord and David Saunders!
PulpCon is pleased, and proud, to announce the Guests of Honor for PulpCon 36.

By way of celebrating the 100th anniversary of Robert E. Howard (2006) and the anniversary of the publication of the first Conan story in WEIRD TALES, Mr. Glenn Lord has accepted our invitation to attend PulpCon 36 as a Guest of Honor.   Mr. Lord was instrumental in the revival of Conan and Howard's other characters.  Following are just a few other facts gleaned from the internet and individuals concerning Glenn:  "For nearly half a century he has been championing Howard and his work, from his landmark publication of the first REH poetry collection, ALWAYS COMES EVENING (Arkham House, 1959) and his legendary REH fanzine, THE HOWARD COLLECTOR (1960-1972), through over thirty years as the literary agent for the owners of Howard's works, to his current involvement in working with the editors of the Wandering Star/Del Rey and Wildside Press Howard books, and the forthcoming updating of his monumental bio-bibliography, THE LAST CELT (Donald M. Grant, 1976), Glenn has befriended, assisted, advised, and mentored two generations of REH fans, scholars, and editors.  There is much more but I think you can see why we are honored to have him as a Guest of Honor.

In honor of celebrating the 100th birthday of noted pulp artist Norman Saunders, David Saunders has also accepted our invitation to be a Guest of Honor at PulpCon 36.  David will present a slide show of almost all of Norman's original pulp work and give a brief description of his life and work.  He will also talk about his "obsessive process of researching biographical information on pulp artists".  I am sure most of you have read some of his work in ILLUSTRATION magazine and other periodicals. In his own words David describes his latest project: "I have just finished my latest biographical essay on the pulp artist ALLEN ANDERSON, who was actually the artist I knew best, since he was my father's lifelong best friend, so this latest essay has been a meaningful sentimental experience to let other people who enjoy his work know what a sweet person he was".  (David would also like to speak with anyone who might own any of Anderson's original artwork.  If you know of anyone contact me  and I will forward the information to him).  Previous works by David include biographical articles and checklists on artists such as Ernest Chiriacka, John W. Scott, Rafael DeSoto, and, of course, Norman Saunders. David has been a good friend of PulpCon's and we look forward to having him as a Guest of Honor.

PulpCon 36 will be held July 5th-8th, 2007 in Dayton, Ohio.
Thanks to Jack Cullers for the information!

This 7"x10" trade paperback marks the return of Lester Dent's original Doc Savage novels after a 15-year hiatus.  Doc Savage Magazine was one of the most popular of the hero pulps, published from 1933 through 1949 by Street & Smith as the sister publication to The Shadow Magazine. The Doc Savage pulp novels were reprinted by Bantam between 1964 and 1991, and created a publishing sensation as the first numbered series of paperback adventure novels.

Doc Savage #1 features the original pulp cover paintings by Emery Clarke from the October and December 1938 issues of Doc Savage, along with the original interior illustrations by Paul Orban.
Doc Savage #1 also comes in a variant cover edition featuring art by James Bama. Both cover versions will reprint both of the original pulp covers in smaller size on the back cover.  Nostalgia Ventures, softcover, 7x10. B&W, $12.95

Fans may notice strong similarities between a certain blockbuster summer film and the plot of Lester Dent's 1938 novel, "Fortress of Solitude." Clark Savage Jr., the Man of Bronze, was a major influence on the creation and development of Clark Kent, the Man of Steel, including of course his arctic "Fortress of Solitude." This double-novel volume reprints both appearances of Doc Savage's greatest enemy, the diabolical John Sunlight. "If Street & Smith had not published The Shadow and Doc Savage, there might never have been any Superman  or Batman," observes popular-culture historian Will Murray, who collaborated with Lester Dent on seven posthumous Doc Savage novels and provides historical commentary in these new volumes. "Between them, Walter Gibson and Lester Dent created the archetype of the superhero, and most of  the fiction formulas and trappings of the eternal battle between superhero and supervillain that has come to dominate popular culture in the last 75 years. I like to call Lester Dent 'the Father of the Superhero' because, while Superman and Batman had other influences, both borrowed liberally from Doc Savage, the original owner of the Fortress of Solitude."

THE SHADOW DOUBLE NOVEL VOLUME 2
“The Chinese Disks” and “Malmordo”
The greatest avenger from the legendary hero pulps returns in two more classic novels by his creator, Walter B. Gibson.
  • The Shadow's crime-fighting organization became fully-formed in “The Chinese Disks,” the novel which introduces his agents cabby Moe Shrevnitz, reformed former-crooks Hawkeye and Tapper, Pietro and the giant African Jericho Druke. The novel is a sequel to Gibson's first novel, “The Living Shadow,” and features the return of The Shadow's first major foe, Diamond Bert Farwell. Thus, “The Chinese Disks” is not only one of the most significant Shadow mysteries, but also one of the most satisfying,” observes pulp historian Will Murray in his historical commentary to the story.
  •  “Malmordo” is the final Shadow novel completed by Walter Gibson before his 1946 departure following a contract dispute, and ended his initial 15-year run chronicling The Shadow's adventures. Murray observes, “In a very real sense, the series that had finally come together in The Chinese Disks culminated with Malmordo, one of Gibson¹s top tales of the 1940s, and one which features the slimiest villain 'Maxwell Grant' ever created.”
THE SHADOW Volume Two features the original pulp cover by George Rozen and interior illustrations by Tom Lovell, who went on to become one of the 20th century's greatest illustrative painters.

In “The Red Blot” (1933), Lamont Cranston first meets Commissioner Weston (setting up the friendship that would be featured in the famous radio series) and investigates a series of crimes orchestrated by a malevolent mastermind who leaves a bloody mark as his calling card. The trade paperback also features the original pulp covers by George Rozen, all the interior illustrations by Tom Lovell and historical commentary by Will Murray, principal author of "The Duende History of The Shadow Magazine."

Normand Design & Recoverings -  John Carter of Mars alternate dust jacket is now available!
Phil Normand has just finished the fourth in his series of alternate dust jackets for Edgar Rice Burroughs collectors.

This new dust jacket for the Canaveral Press edition of JOHN CARTER OF MARS is designed using J. Allen St. John's cover from the "Amazing Stories" magazine of January, 1941 which first published the novelette, "John Carter and the Giant of Mars." It has been known since 1963 that the actual author of the story was Burroughs' artist son, John Coleman Burroughs, and in honor of that fact Normand has designed the titling and author lettering of the jacket using J.C. Burroughs' logo and signature from his "John Carter of Mars" Sunday comic strip. The spine art uses a portrait panel of John Carter from the strip and is designed to match up with the penultimate volume in the Mars series, LLANA OF GATHOL published by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. in 1948.

Normand has previously created alternate dust jackets for SAVAGE PELLUCIDAR, THUVIA, MAID OF MARS and A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS which bring together art references of bibliographic importance to the books, thereby creating truly alternate "might-have-been" dust jackets and not just redesigns.

The new JOHN CARTER OF MARS dust jacket is priced at $40.00 + $6.00 packing & shipping. It may be ordered by check or money order from Normand Design, P.O. Box 8436, Denver, CO 80201-8436.

Or visit
http://www.recoverings.com/ to see the rest of the alternate jackets and the complete catalog of high-quality restorations of A.C. McClurg dust jackets for the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

PEARLS FROM PEORIA by Philip Jose Farmer - Still available!
PEARLS FROM PEORIA is a mammoth book containing over 300,000 words of unpublished and rare work by the SF Grandmaster.
Included will be a long Doc Savage screen treatment, material on Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan, and
much more.
This book will weigh in at 700-800 pages when fully-designed, with full-page black and white interior illustrations by Keith Howell.

Editor Paul Spiteri
had the following to say regarding PEARLS FROM PEORIA:
Getting this collection to the point of imminent publication really has been a long journey – I started working on this project in 2002. PEARLS FROM PEORIA is a massive volume of Phil’s work, covering over 50 years of his prodigious output.  It’s organized thematically and showcases this extraordinary author’s many talents; his original fiction, his take on pulp characters, his poems, his biography writing skills (both fact and fiction) and even includes some enlightening autobiographical pieces. There are a number of previously unpublished pieces and the book boasts some fantastic artwork specifically commissioned for this publication. This anthology coincides neatly with a Philip José Farmer renaissance
following on as it does from Myths for the Modern Age, The Best of Philip José Farmer, and reprints of Tarzan Alive, and Strange Relations.

Philip Jose Farmer had the following to say regarding PEARLS FROM PEORIA:
After a lifetime of writing it is a real joy to see a collection such as
PEARLS FROM PEORIA in print. That it covers so many aspects of my work is especially gratifying. I’ve enjoyed revisiting this diverse collection of my work (some over fifty years old!) and am impressed with the thought that went into arranging the pieces into the order they appear.  I do believe it gives a good overview of my whole catalog; I hope the reader will enjoy the collection and the access it affords to some of my rarer pieces.  I had fun writing them, I hope the reader has fun reading them.

Visit the Subterranean Press website for a complete contents listing.

Pulp-master John Peter Drummond's Ki-Gor, Lord of the Jungle, brings back the most acclaimed jungle hero the pulp magazines produced. Born Robert Kilgour, the child of missionaries killed in Africa, Ki-Gor grew up in savagery, but developed a noble, generous spirit. When red-headed Helene Vaughn's plane crashes in the jungle, Ki-Gor rescues her. How can she resist falling in love with this superbly-muscled, child-like giant, who is unspoiled by the corrupting influences of civilization? But this classic idyll of "Me Ki-Gor. You Helene!" is threatened when the jungle lord's mate is captured by raiders and she is threatened with becoming the "Bride of the Serpent God"--a ravenous, twenty-foot python. Then Ki-Gor himself is targeted for death by the evil "Warrior-Queen of Attila's Lost Legion." Accompanied only by his companions, Tembu George, the giant Masi warrior, and the pigmy chief, N'Geeso, Ki-Gor must battle the savage jungle beasts, cruel nature, and the treachery of men--if he and Helene are to survive the perils that threaten them and return in triumph to their tree-top home. A must read for fans of Tarzan and other jungle heroes.

"We were three men with two horses and two swords. We were outcasts in the thickets of the foot-hills of the Badakshan, under the peaks of the Roof of the World. Nevertheless, we three were happy. We had taken Shirzad Mir from the hands of Jani Beg, who had marked him for death."  — thus runs the account of Abdul Dost as recorded in "Rose Face."

6x9-inch perfect bound; 174 pages, 10 stories, $18.00

It takes brains as well as brawn to outsmart these insidious madmen, geniuses at twisting science into terrifying tools of murder, and Wade never shrinks from the challenge.

For the first time, ten of the most spine-chilling Wade Hammond stories have been collected from the pages of classic 1930’s pulps: DETECTIVE-DRAGNET and TEN DETECTIVE ACES. In these vivid, atmospheric tales from the pen of Paul Chadwick, author of Secret Agent X and Captain Hazzard, the mood is mysterious, the situation perilous, and the suspense unrelenting. Lock the doors, pull down the blinds, and enter the weird and wonderful world of Wade Hammond.

Before he had solved this mystery, Sam found himself married to a woman he scarcely knew and spending his honeymoon in jail. To complicate things still further, a man was found dead in his hotel room and an attempt was made on his own life. World Fantasy Con 2006 -  Focus on Robert E. Howard - November 2 - 5, 2006
World Fantasy Con 2006 will be held in Austin, Texas Nov. 2-5, with the focus and emphasis on the Centennial Anniversary of one Robert E. Howard.  Guests include Glen Cook, Bradley Denton (Toastmaster), Dave Duncan, John Jude Palencar, Joe Haldeman, Martha Wells, Edward Bryant, Rick Klaw, and others.
Watch the World Fantasy Con website for the latest updates.

Scott Cupp, who along with multiple-award-winning author and editor Joe R. Lansdale edited the forthcoming anthology CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE, told SCI FI Wire that the book's subtitle, "Texans Celebrate Robert E. Howard," explains the book's purpose and inspiration. "[Howard, creator of Conan,] is an amazing figure in the history of speculative fiction," Cupp said in interview. "[His] writing career [lasted] less than 15 years, [yet his] output [consisted] of [much] quality fiction and poetry, all while living and working in a small Texas community that did not understand him or his work."

This year marks the centenary of Howard's birth, so it only seemed appropriate to honor him, Cupp said. "When the [2006] World Fantasy Convention in Austin elected to honor [Howard's] birth with the focus of the convention, it seemed natural to have a commemorative volume," he said.

Cupp said that the book contains stories featuring characters created by Howard, stories featuring Howard as a character and stories inspired by the fiction styles of Howard. "Since [Howard] wrote in virtually every type of pulp market except science fiction and romance, this left a wide area of field available," Cupp said. "We got a Briton Roman occupation weird horror story from Ardath Mayhar, ... a modern horror story from Neal Barrett Jr., a very weird western from fantasy writer C. Dean Andersson (featuring his female Norse barbarian warrior, Bloodsong), new work from Howard Waldrop (a Mexican fantasy featuring the great-nephew of [Howard's character] Breckinridge Elkins) ... and a 'Multiverse' story from Michael Moorcock. We [also] got some indescribable stories such as Lawrence Person's 'The Toughest Jew in the West' and Jayme Lynn Blaschke's very alternate-world fantasy of giant apes."

Other writers featured include: Gene Wolfe, James Reasoner, Bradley Denton, Bill Crider and Charlotte Laughlin, Lillian Stewart Carl, Mark Finn, Carrie Richerson, Chris Roberson, Jessica Reisman, L.J. Washburn, Rick Klaw and Paul Miles, Melissa Mia Hall, Chris Nakashima-Brown and Cupp himself.
