- Now available! THE PULPS, THE ADIRONDACKS, AND COON MOUNTAIN BILL A collection of stories by William Merriam Rouse (1884-1937) With a biographical introduction by Miriam DuBois Babcock Printed in Canada, First Printing, April 28, 2006 George A Vanderburgh, Publisher, The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box ISBN 1-55246-689-2 Soft cover, 507 pages, Price $30.00 The Pulps, The Adirondacks and Coon Mountain Bill was published to memorialize one of the unsung authors of the age of pulp fiction, a lesser known but prolific free-lance writer, my step-father, William Merriam Rouse (1884-1937). ). During the first third of the century, pulp magazines were not considered literature (so scholars would not have looked at him). Today there are many who see this as a genre worth researching, a potentially serious contribution to real literature. Between World War I and World War II, the pulps became one of the dominant forces in popular culture. The stories took the reader back to a time of daring dreams, bold adventure and a simpler outlook on the world. Bill Rouse wrote hundreds of short stories, novelettes, and serials of adventure, mystery, detective, humor, romance and horror as well as his favorite Colonial and Quebec stories for various pulp and "slick" magazines. I inherited sixty original unpublished manuscripts written by Bill Rouse, a stack of letters to and from his agents and top-brass pulp editors of the 1930's, and a few photographs. The first four chapters of this 507 page book cover his biography and include my memories of the personal man, his little foibles, his humor, work ethics and his attitudes about life that he shared with me. The book also has 26 of Bill's best unpublished manuscripts, four of his stories previously published, numerous pictures, and a comprehensive bibliography. In his brief lifetime, Bill Rouse left a great legacy to the Adirondack region, especially the area between the Boquet River and Lake Champlain, known as his beloved Coon Mountain. He used this setting in many of his adventure stories, as well as his humorous yarns about the backwoods folks who populated the imaginary area he called "Bildad Road." In 1940, pulp editor F. Orlin Tremaine reprinted many of these stories in a hard cover volume entitled "Bildad Road." One of Bill's stories published in Collier's was used for a silent movie in 1918. This book should be of great interest to those who have revived their fascination with the Great American Pulp Literature of the first third of the century as well as to those who revel in the folklore of the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. PULPCON 35 -
August 3-6, 2006 PULPCON 35 will be held August 3-6, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio. Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan. Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey. Pulpcon is introducing a new price structure for memberships, offering full memberships Thursday-Sunday (T-S), Friday-Sunday (F-S) and Saturday-Sunday (S-S). Dealers will be required to purchase T-S memberships. Those arriving July 16th or later will be held for at-the-door registration: $40 (T-S), $20 (F-S) and $10 (S-S). Watch the PULPCON website for the latest information as it becomes available.

THE
NIGHT WIND - New pulp series character reprint in the works! Chris (Upcoming Modern Hero-Pulp Novels) Yates has been drafted by a small press publisher to re-typeset and re-format a series pulp stories starring the character “The Night Wind” (aka Bingham Harvard). The Night Wind's adventures were originally published in THE CAVALIER magazine and then ALL-STORY WEEKLY in 1913, 1914 and 1918. Despite roughly 21 appearances, “The Night Wind” scored only three known covers. Chris is trying to obtain digital scans of the covers listed below to reproduce for the reprint series. Here are the issues where “The Night Wind” covers appear: THE CAVALIER magazine, May 10, 1913 - Night Wind cover THE CAVALIER magazine, Oct. 4, 1913 - Night Wind cover THE CAVALIER magazine, March 7, 1914 - possible Night Wind cover THE CAVALIER magazine, March 14, 1914 - possible Night Wind cover THE CAVALIER magazine, March 21, 1914 - possible Night Wind cover ALL-STORY WEEKLY magazine, Oct. 5, 1918 - Night Wind cover Ideally, Chris needs scans of 300 dpi size, preferably using a descreen feature to get rid of the moiré pattern. Chris will certainly give credit to anyone who provides a cover, personally in the acknowledgments/credits of each reprint that includes one of your covers. In light of the non-existent profit-margin (this is a print-on-demand project), Chris can offer little more. Chris would be very grateful for any assistance you can provide (if only from one pulp magazine fan to another). Even a referral to someone who might be able to provide these scans would be greatly appreciated. Contact Chris at cyates0300@wowway.com The Night Wind was created by Frederic van Rennselaer Dey (author of innumerable Nick Carter stories) and first appeared in The Cavalier from 1913 to 1919. The Night Wind was Bingham Harvard, a bank clerk wrongly accused of theft. Harvard did not go quietly into custody, however, instead becoming a fugitive. The police pursued him closely, only to discover their mistake as Harvard began preying on them. Harvard, called "the Night Wind" by the police for his elusiveness, did not kill the police, but he was quite content to break their limbs. He found this easy to do, as he was stronger than a normal man. Quite a bit stronger, as a matter of fact--at least five times' worth. (The source of his strength is unknown, as he was adopted as an orphan) The police finally call in Kate Maxwell (later Maxwilton), a nurse turned police detective, to capture Harvard. She becomes convinced he's innocent, they fall in love, and together they escape from Gotham after having gotten married. They eventually return to the States, and after various harum-scarums and to-dos over various story arcs they are happy together, corrupt police and bank staff uncovered and Harvard's good name restored. Thanks to Jess Nevins and his Pulp Heroes website for the information on The Night Wind.

The Pulp Rack -
New updates! A new semi-section has been added to The Pulp Rack. It's actually under the ADVENTURE category: "W. Ryerson Johnson, Pulp Fictioneer." You can take a look at it at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/w_ryerson_johns.html The introductory material there explains my interest in Johnson. I first learned about Ryerson (Johnny) Johnson's pulp career from a fanzine article in the mid-1970s. My memory usually clutches trivia better than essentials, but in this case I can't recall the source, but I'd like to think it was an article by Nick Carr or an interview with Johnson by Al Tonik from a PulpCon appearance by the aging fictioneer. My initial awareness of Johnson was as a Kenneth Robeson ghost for Street & Smith's Doc Savage magazine. Later I learned of his work in the crime and western pulps. My appreciation and enjoyment of his stories has grown as a result of his work in this latter genre. There is an enthusiasm in his Doc Savage tales that fits the action-packed pace appropriate for that character, but the stories have some clunky sections -- it's obvious in hindsight that this character isn't really Johnson's, and the hand of his friend, Lester Dent, or a S&S editor, may have been rushed and a tad graceless in tweaking the writing and smoothing out the flow of the story between Johnson's work and the fix ups entered to make the finished work more appropriate to Doc Savage continuity, what little of it there may have been. But Johnson's own work shows care and effort. He didn't slam out stories in so prolific a manner as many other pulp fictioneers, but he provided entertainment just as well and better than others. The articles I'll be posting in this section are an effort to share my enthusiasm and appreciation for Johnson's writing. Included there is a link to the first essay for this section, "'The Avalanche Maker' and 'River Round Up': A Look at Two North-Westerns by W. Ryerson Johnson." You'll find this piece at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/athe_avalanche.html Pulp fan Thomas Krabacher presents a look at Edgar Rice Burroughs' 1916 novel, THE GIRL FROM FARRIS'S. As Tom states, "Burroughs began writing THE GIRL FROM FARRIS'S in the summer 1913. He originally intended to enter it in a best novel contest sponsored at the time by the publishing house of Reilly & Britton in hopes of winning the $10,000 first prize. He didn't complete it, however, until sometime in the spring of 1914 well after the contest ended; eventually it saw publication as a four-part serial in ALL-STORY WEEKLY in the fall of 1916." This isn't an adventure novel of the sort ERB is known for, but he is, after all, the Master Of Adventure -- so I've posted Tom's article in the Adventure section of The Pulp Rack. You'll find it at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/the_girl_from_f.html Thanks for visiting! Soloman Kane Feature Film -
Update from screenwriter and director Michael J. Bassett! As some of you may know, a film based on Robert Howard's 'Solomon Kane' character has recently been announced. Since I'm the writer and director of this upcoming movie I just wanted to drop a quick note to all the Howard and Kane fans out there who might be either delighted or horrified that a movie is in the making. I know how I feel when a favourite book/game/comic is announced as a movie; I'm happy that someone has finally realised how great it is and always cynical that the collective 'they' is going to screw it up somehow. This seems to happen more often than not but, regardless, I always start out optimistic. I hope you all do too on Kane. Couple of things you should know that should set your collective minds at ease; firstly, the producers really do love Robert E. Howard and have been obsessive about trying to find the right story to introduce him to the wider film going world. Secondly, in me they have found a writer and director who loves the fantasy genre and wants be absolutely certain that I remain true to the essence of Solomon Kane. Certainly at this script stage, I'm sure I have something which really works and can't wait to get it before cameras. For me Solomon Kane is perhaps Howard's most interesting and unusual character and for many reasons, possibly the hardest to bring to the screen. Kane's sheer sense of resolve and inner strength is a tremendous challenge to convey both for me as a director and for the actor I finally choose to cast as this iconic hero. The danger is that because of this strength and formality in his ways it could lead to a rather mannered and inaccessible hero and I'm trying to walk a fine line so that we can somehow understand him without softening him into some reflective and weakened 21st century version of a hero. I want to absolutely capture a hero who has unwavering faith in his mission and his ability to follow through - personally, I miss 'real' men in modern movies; taciturn, world weary and masculine heroes who are genuinely capable of doing what they promise. Kane, to me, is one such man and I'm determined to honour him. What I thought I'd do with this first story, in what will hopefully become a series of films, is to back peddle a little bit from where Howard started us off with Kane and explore just why he is the man he is. So this first film is going to be an 'origins' tale of sorts. I had to create some sense of what could possibly drive a man such as Kane and I think you're all going to be really excited by what happens to him. Then, once we're up and running, it allows me the freedom to go on and tangle with some of Kane's other adventures. Of course, the big question is, who will be Kane? Truth is, I don't know yet. The casting is so vital that I don't want to rush this. You can be sure that the person I finally cast will be able to embody the real essence of Kane. I need someone with a really predatory power and inner anger that can burst forth at just the right moments. Not many guys out there can do that so making that choice is going to be tricky. Anyway, that's all for now. I'm not going to make any wild promises about how wonderful the finished film will be - there's far too much water yet to flow under that particular bridge - but I can assure you all that at least I'm starting this journey with the very best of intentions. Oh yes, and as a little peek into some of the stuff I'm planning here's a concept art image of Kane battling a mob of ghoulish creatures. The artwork is by Greg Staples, who I'm sure some of you will know if one of the very best fantasy artists working today. Enjoy. CLASSIC COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS
#5: CONAN - Now
available! 5" tall, fully painted, packaged in a litho-printed full-color tin box and included is a vintage-style pinback button, and booklet, limited to 750 pieces, $49.95 Dark Horse's Classic Comic Book Characters series features characters from a variety of publishers' books, not just Dark Horse. We are very pleased to present one of the all-time favorite characters, Robert E. Howard's Conan, as the fifth release in our Classic Comic Book Characters series. Although Conan first appeared in the pulp magazines of the 1930s, it was his debut as a comic book character in the 1970s that really rekindled interest in the character. The comics series was groundbreaking in many ways, elevating the standard of artwork and pushing the envelope of content with its savage approach to the "sword and sorcery" genre. Our statue is inspired by that version of Conan, but also recalls the 1940's sculpting and painting style of "syroco" statues with a result which Craig Yoe describes as "primitive but charming". Conan stands 5" tall and is full-painted. Each statuette is packaged in a litho-printed full-color tin box and included is a vintage-style pinback button, and booklet about the character and his creator, limited to 750 pieces. Pulp Rack - New update! Hot on the heels of Richard Hall's review of THE IRON TRAIL, here's a short essay on artist Harvey Dunn, a member of the Howard Pyle school of American illustration. Harvey Dunn isn't usually on the list of famed pulp-cover artists -- his work more often appeared in the slicks. But the subjects of his paintings -- historical adventure, the frontier, pioneer life -- and his influence on many subsequent illustrators make him worth examining by pulp fans. You can read this article by visiting this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/harvey_dunn_art.html Once again, thanks for your patronage! Battered Silicon Dispatch Box THE ROMANCE OF THE SECRET SERVICE FUND Written by Fred M. White, edited and introduced by Douglas G. Greene of Crippen & Landru In the gaslit days before the First World War, when Sherlock Holmes wandered the foggy streets of London, the espionage story was invented. Holmes himself was occasionally called in to investigate cases of lost diplomatic papers, but he wasn't the first specialist in such matters. That honor goes to Newton Moore, the creation of Fred M. White. In this volume, a series of six stories appearing in Pearson's Magazine in 1900, Moore deals with Russian adventuresses (with daggers secreted in their corsages), German spy masters, murderous Indian potentates, Balkan intrigues, rifles that will "entirely revolutionize infantry tactics," and purloined plans of all sorts. Written at a time when spying was romantic, public-school ideals triumphed, and patriotism was supreme, ROMANCE OF THE SECRET SERVICE FUND is evocative of a lost era and one of the most important series of espionage stories never to appear in book form-until now. Available in trade paperback for $16. THE PULPS, THE ADIRONDACKS, AND COON MOUNTAIN BILL A collection of stories and, I think, autobiographical pieces, by pulp writer William M. Rouse, compiled by Miriam Babcock. Born in 1884, Rouse lived in Westport, New York, along Lake Champlain in the Adirondack Mountains. Until his death in 1937, Rouse wrote extensively for the pulp magazines, publishing stories in such titles as Argosy, Clues, Complete Stories, Detective Fiction Weekly, People' s, Sea Stories, Short Stories, Thrilling Adventures, and Top-Notch. He also wrote for Collier's, Liberty, and Munsey's. He was also a journalist. Unfortunately, Battered Silicon has not provided me with the contents of this volume (nor is it listed at their website). However, there are some previously unpublished pieces in this book. It will be available in August as a trade paperback for $30 The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box, PO Box 204, Shelburne, Ontario Canada L0N 1S0. For inquiries and orders, contact George A. Vanderburgh, Publisher email: gav@bmts.com FAX: 519-925-3482 Visit the Battered Silicon Dispatch Box website at http://www.batteredbox.com/. Both titles can also be ordered from Mike Chomko. DARKER
TIDES by Eric Frank Russell - Now available! The name of Eric Frank Russell is synonymous with the "Golden Age of Science Fiction". From his first published tale in 1937 to the middle of the 1960s, Eric Frank Russell was one of the most highly-acclaimed authors in the genre. As such, much of his best science fiction remains in print today. However, there was another side to the great writer, that of being one of the modern masters of the weird tale. As an admirer of the work of Charles Fort, Eric Frank Russell was also keenly interested in the supernatural or unexplainable. His novel SINISTER BARRIER was credited with inspiring John W. Campbell to launch UNKNOWN so that stories of this type would have a home. Over the next two decades, Eric Frank Russell wrote more stories that are more in the realm of the "weird tale" than the more logical world of science fiction. Several of these tales were collected over thirty years ago in a fabulously rare volume entitled DARK TIDES. This new collection contains all of these elusive tales and doubles their number with a selection of similar stories from sources such as WEIRD TALES, FANTASTIC, STRANGE STORIES, and SCIENCE FANTASY. Whether you come to this book as an Eric Frank Russell fan seeking out his rare stories or come as a devotee of the weird tale, we are certain that you'll find much here to enjoy! With introductions by the late author and a new preface by John Pelan and a striking cover by Allen Koszowski this edition is limited to just 500 copies. Considering that Mr. Russell's collection from NESFA is now in a third printing, we strongly suggest advance orders to avoid possible disappointment. $45.00 the copy with $7.00 S & H in the USA, $14.00 S & H elsewhere. Visit the Darkside Press/Midnight House website to place your order.

Memberships arriving at the Pulpcon mailbox on or before May 13, 2006 are $20 (T-S) and $10 (S-S). Memberships arriving in our box May 14th through July 15th are: $30 T-S, $20 F-S and $10 S-S. Those arriving July 16th or later will be held for at-the-door registration: $40 (T-S), $20 (F-S) and $10 (S-S). Watch the PULPCON website for the latest information as it becomes available.
