BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER -  Spring Issue will debut at  Windy City!
To compensate for the lateness of the Fall/Winter double issue, Blood ‘n’ Thunder’s publishers have worked overtime to prepare the Spring issue, which will debut at the Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention in early May.

Like the Windy City show itself, the new BnT commemorates the 75th anniversary of The Shadow Magazine’s first issue, released in April 1931. In “The 20 Most Underrated Shadow Novels,” a blue-ribbon panel of Shadow authorities—including Will Murray, Anthony Tollin, Howard Hopkins, John Olsen, and Rich Harvey—offer their choices for the best of the lesser-known, underappreciated stories in this long-running series. In “Shadows Never Cast,” BnT editor Ed Hulse synopsizes and evaluates the early, jettisoned scripts for what became the 1994 Shadow movie starring Alec Baldwin. And there’s a portfolio of rare stills—many of them never before published—from The Shadow Strikes (1937), the first full-length film to feature pulpdom’s pre-eminent hero.

Also in this issue: Will Murray documents behind-the-scenes efforts that led to the creation of “the Silver Lancer,” a state-of-the-art craft flown by pulp hero Bill Barnes; Rex W. Layton makes a case for L. Ron Hubbard’s authorship of six pseudonymously published sports stories; Monte Herridge describes the adventures of The Mongoose, a little-known detective-pulp hero created by Johnston McCulley; and William Lampkin reports on a Pulp.Net poll in which fans voted on the five essential pulp-oriented reference books.

Among the other rare illustrations in the issue are Bill Barnes artist Frank Tinsley’s original, unpublished design sketches for the Lancer, and George Rozen’s full-color “rough” for a 1942 Shadow cover.

Since the issue will be making its “premiere” at the Windy City convention, subscribers attending the show are urged to stop by the BnT table and pick up their copies. The remaining subscriber copies will be mailed out during the second week of May. Single copies are available for $6.00 each from Ed Hulse at 2467 Rt. 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950. For a larger cover image, click here.

Harold Lamb - First two volumes collecting ALL Lamb's stories are now available!
If you think you know Lamb's work from his histories or the public domain fiction that pops up from time to time, you don't know what you've missed. At long last the fiction from his ADVENTURE days—the same fiction that inspired Robert E. Howard to name him one of his favorite authors--is becoming available.

The first of two volumes collecting ALL of Lamb's Cossack stories are now available for pre-order from Amazon. "Wolf of the Steppes" and "Warriors of the Steppes" are being published by University of Nebraska Press's Bison Books (the other two volumes will be printed next year). And when I write all, I mean every single Khlit the Cossack adventure, printed in order, some of which have been out of print since the 1930s and some which have never been printed between book covers.

There's more--the volumes include all the stories of Khlit's allies and fellow Cossacks, as well as more than a dozen standalone Cossack stories, behind-the-scenes letters, and introductions from leading speculative fiction authors. This is the stuff of grand adventure, fiction teeming with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, evil cults, gleaming treasure, and damsels in need of rescue.

But that's not all--
Two of Lamb's last stories for
ADVENTURE magazine were the moody, action-packed adventures of Nial O'Gordon. Those of us lucky enough to have found these rare pieces have always named them among Lamb's very best, and now one of them has been reprinted at last by PitchBlack, in their "Sages and Swords" anthology. In addition to the rare Lamb novella it features a wide sampling of heroic fiction by modern writers.

Lastly, you can have a sneak peak at one of the stories from volume three of the Cossack collection by visiting the current issue of Flashing Swords at http://www.swordandsorcery.org.  Another rarity, "An Edge to A Sword" has never been collected between book covers.

Jack Williamson
April 29th is Jack Williamson's 98th birthday!  Happy Birthday Jack!

Jack Williamson: THE STONEHENGE GATE  - Paperback edition available May 2nd!
THE STONEHENGE GATE by Jack Williamson will be published in paperback by TOR on May 2nd.
A dark mystery has been buried beneath the sands of the Sahara desert since the beginning of time. In a basement in New Mexico, four poker buddies find reason to believe that a startling secret is out there. . .

These four amateur adventurers are about to uncover the key that could unlock the vast reaches of the universe.

A sudden burst of curiosity propels mild-mannered English professor Will and his three friends to the Sahara to excavate a site where radar has evidently detected trilithic stones hidden beneath the sand. There they stumble upon an ancient artifact that will change their lives, and the world, forever...a gateway between planets, linking Earth to distant worlds where they will discover wonders and terrors beyond imagining.

Jack Williamson, the dean of science fiction writers, weaves an exciting tale that takes the friends to the far corners of the universe. One leads an oppressed people to freedom. Another uncovers clues that could identify a long-dormant civilization of immortal beings. Now each traveler must play a crucial role in unraveling an ancient mystery, the solution to which may reveal the true origins of the human race.  If they can just survive their journeys back to Earth . . .

Paradox Entertainment to Develop Robert E. Howard Western
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 2006--Not long after acquiring the entire Robert E. Howard library, Paradox Entertainment announced it has commenced development of a motion picture based on one of Howard's many western stories, titled "Vultures of Wahpeton."

The story is an action thriller that focuses on the character Steve Corcoran, an amoral Texas gunslinger who finds himself far from home in a mining boomtown. Appointed Sheriff, his job is to rid the town of its crushing lawlessness. But Corcoran soon finds himself drawn into a conspiracy to rob the town, led by a mysterious gang known as The Vultures.
The movie will be produced by Paradox's Peter Sederowsky and Fredrik Malmberg along with producer Ken Aguado via his company, Standard Film Group. Leif Rahmqvist acts as executive producer. Paradox has hired David Heller to adapt the novella into a screenplay.

Says Aguado, "This is really one of the best stories I've read since `Unforgiven.' It has all the elements of the great Hollywood westerns: a strong, enigmatic lead fighting evil while battling his inner demons."

Ken Aguado is the producer of movies such as "Sexual Life" (Anne Heche), "The Salton Sea" (Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio) and "Ticker" (Dennis Hopper). David Heller was represented by Caren Bohrman of The Bohrman Agency.

It was on February 1, 2006, that Paradox Entertainment announced the acquisition of all rights to the stories and characters of pulp author Robert E. Howard. One of the greatest authors of his time, Howard is considered the creator of the genre "Sword & Sorcery," perhaps most known through the character Conan. His stories take us to such different surroundings as ancient Atlantis, the North African desert during WW1, hidden opium dens in dark alleys of the Big City, the Wild West and northern Britain during the invasion of the Roman Legions.

Paradox Entertainment also owns the self-created property Mutant Chronicles, presently in pre-production for a live-action feature, directed by Simon Hunter.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
TOUGH GUYS. BAD GIRLS. MASKED HEROES. SPACE VIXENS. FEARLESS ADVENTURERS AND NAMELESS HORRORS will descend on Chicagoland along with their creators, collectors, and fans for the sixth annual Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention from May 5-7.

The three-day event will celebrate the uniquely American form of popular literature. Attendees will hear from actual artists of the pulp era; watch films inspired by the great pulp writers and find rare issues of such seminal publications as Doc Savage, Amazing Stories, Black Mask, Weird Tales and thousands more.

The medium, which thrived from the roaring twenties through WWII, vied with radio and the movies as the era's most popular form of entertainment. The 10-cent magazines printed on coarse pulpwood paper and boasting eye grabbing (and often lurid) four-color cover paintings introduced such immortals as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ray Bradbury, L. Ron Hubbard, H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Heinlein to the American public. The pulps are widely recognized as the inspiration for such current pop culture mainstays as Star Trek, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and virtually every comic book hero from Superman to Spider-Man.

Highlights of this year's convention include a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the seminal pulp hero, The Shadow! Guests will include Jim Steranko, the groundbreaking comic book artist and media phenomenon whose paperback covers and posters featuring the Night Master are considered among the finest depictions of the .45 wielding hawk-nosed hero. Also, Frank Gladney, son of original Shadow cover artist Graves Gladney, will present a retrospective of his father’s classic pulp work. Previous guests of honor, award winning science fiction writer Frank Robinson and prolific pulp cover artist Ernie Chiracka (whose work has graced over 500 magazines. paperback and good girl art calendars) will also be in attendance. Steranko will speak at 7:00 pm on Saturday. The art show featuring the works of Steranko, Gladney and other priceless pieces of vintage pulp art will be on display all weekend.

In the mid-1970s, legendary artist Jim Steranko created the definitive version of The Shadow in 27 paperback covers for Pyramid and HBJ books.  Although a few of these paintings have been displayed at other conventions in the past, they have never been displayed as a group...until now!

Steranko is Guest of Honor at the 6th Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention, now just two weeks away (May 5-May 7).  In addition to displaying all 27 of his incredible Shadow covers together for the first -- and perhaps the last -- time, there will be a few other Steranko art surprises on display as well, and he'll be giving a talk on Saturday night.

Other attractions include:

100+ table dealer showroom boasting one of the largest assemblies of vintage pulp, paperback and related material in the world. Affordable reprints, hard-to-find books, fanzines and original artwork will also be offered for sale on FRIDAY-SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Highlights will include The Shadow’s 1937 feature film debut, The Shadow Strikes, a chapter of the classic 1940s Shadow serial and the final entry in the 1946 Shadow movie series, The Missing Lady. A special added bonus is the unspooling of the rarely seen 10 minute BUCK ROGERS short that was originally produced for exhibition at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair! FRI-SAT

Pulp Art Show displaying an unparalleled collection of Shadow-themed and other pulp works by Jim Steranko, Graves Gladney and such other masters of the fantastic, noir and bizarre as George Jerome Rozen and Edd Cartier will also be showcased. SAT-SUN

Diogenes, the psychotic killer who stole them in Dance of Death, is throwing down the gauntlet to both the city and to his brother, FBI Agent Pendergast, who is currently incarcerated in a maximum security prison. To quell the PR nightmare of the gem fiasco, the museum decides to reopen the Tomb of Senef. An astounding Egyptian temple, it was a popular museum exhibit until the 1930s, when it was quietly closed. But when the tomb is unsealed in preparation for its gala reopening, the killings--and whispers of an ancient curse--begin again. THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL - Coming May 23rd!
Paul Malmont's upcoming novel THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL  is "a modern take on the pulp novel, concerning the rivalry and friendship between the leading pulp writers of the thirties: Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage".

Set in 1937, when America has turned to the pulps for relief from the Depression, it is at once a valentine to an old-fashioned genre as well as a modern meta-literary examination of the classic hero pulp.  The death of H.P. Lovecraft propels the pulp era's greatest writers and rivals Walter (The Shadow) Gibson and Lester (Doc Savage) Dent into a real-life adventure even greater than the ones they imagine.  Among the characters appearing in the book are L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Orson Welles, and (probably of particular interest to you as a Western writer!) a young sea-faring cowboy by the name of Lew Moore.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is a swash-buckling romantic tale of writers and writing, magic and love, marriage and fatherhood, ambition and loss that weaves the true lives of its real-life characters into a fictional epic.

A sneak peek of the novel is now online on the Chinatown Death Cloud Peril website.
The website should whet your appetites and give you an indication of what is to come.

Wild Cat Books - New pulpzine in the works!
Wild Cat Books has decided to go back to its "pulpzine" roots where it first began publishing 10 years ago, ("Secret Sanctum", "Strange Worlds"), in order to have a forum where it can present new pulp fiction, an occasional old classic story, movie, art, and comic reviews, plus articles about issues of interest to the pulp fan.

Perhaps there's a new aspiring writer or artist out there, and Wild Cat Books would like you to consider perhaps contributing a story, artwork, article or essay to
the new pulpzine LOST SANCTUM.

LOST SANCTUM will be a Quarterly Perfect Bound magazine (8.5"x11"), published every 3 months, each issue with a specific theme, with the first issue focusing on Science Fiction, but any good article or story relating to pulp fandom, as it exists today or in the past, would be welcome.

As this is a new foray into the pulpzine genre, Wild Cat Books cannot offer any payment at this time except for contributor copies.
LOST SANCTUM will be published through Print-On-Demand site, Lulu, and will be made available around the world with a ISBN number so that Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. will be able to offer it. If sales are good, and if there seems to be a demand for a good old pulpzine again, then Wild Cat Books can start offering payment in the future, but right now, comp
copies are the best they can do.

Wild Cat Books would be happy to hear from any of you who may be interested in contributing and if any other publishers have any advertisements for their products, they would be happy to run a full-page ad in exchange for sample copies of your items(s).

Blackmask Online - Doc Savage and Shadow reprints and e-texts may end!
Blackmask Online was contacted by Conde Nast lawyers on December 24, 2005 regarding the Blackmask Online Shadow and Doc Savage ebooks and paperback reprints.  Conde Nast lawyers produced 506 copyright renewal notices for Doc Savage and The Shadow and gave Blackmask Online a deadline of April 7, 2006 for settlement.  Settlement included removal of the Doc Savage and Shadow ebooks and a stop to all reprinting of the Doc Savage and Shadow novels with no penalties attached.  Despite this more than generous offer, Blackmask Online has declined and opted to go to court.
The case goes before a magistrate in Greenbelt, MD on May 8.

FEMME NOIR - Returns with an all-new adventure!
FEMME NOIR creators Christopher Mills and Joe Staton - along with inker Horacio Ottolini - are proud to announce the beginning of a new 28-week FEMME NOIR story arc, "BLONDE JUSTICE" at SUPERNATURAL CRIME (http://www.supernaturalcrime.com). The first weekly episode of the new story will premiere on Tuesday, April 11th.

FEMME NOIR is a web-exclusive mystery comic strip starring a mysterious female private eye operating in the dark city of Port Nocturne - a politically corrupt, crime-ridden metropolis where the smell of gunpowder hangs in the air like cheap perfume, every black alley comes to a dead end, and justice is… blonde.

Mills and Staton have been doing the FEMME NOIR web comic for over five years and while they haven't always maintained a weekly schedule, they've completed three full-length, web-exclusive mystery thrillers to date: "COLD, DEAD FINGERS," "AN EYE FOR A SPY," and "CHAMBERS OF HORRORr."

"The FEMME NOIR series is my unabashed valentine to the crime fiction genre. All the conventions of the genre - and the cliches - are happily and enthusiastically embraced. It's an amalgamation of 40's Poverty Row B-movies, Golden and Silver Age comics, old radio shows, pulp stories... a little bit of everything I love, old and new," says Mills.

The new arc, "BLONDE JUSTICE," is somewhat different from the previous stories on the site, as it was prepared as print comic book and is intended to be the first issue of an eventual miniseries.

"For the last year (actually, quite a bit longer than that), Joe and I have been working on what is intended to be a four-issue print miniseries called the 'Dark City Diaries,' made up of four stand alone stories - 'BLONDE JUSTICE,' 'KILLER IN STEEL,' 'STACKED DECK,' and 'CONCRETE JUNGLE.'" Mills explains. "Because progress on these issues has been slow, and Joe can't quite manage to simultaneously draw both the print stories and separate ones for the website, we've decided to serialize the miniseries online before it sees print."

FEMME NOIR is illustrated by comics industry veteran Joe Staton, whose numerous credits include such major Marvel & DC characters as the HULK, GREEN LANTERN, GUY GARDNER, BATMAN, THE HUNTRESS, PLASTIC MAN, SCOOBY DOO, and many others. Inker Horacio Ottolini lives in Argentina. He first inked Staton's pencils on the Elseworlds BATMAN tale, "Citizen Wayne," and frequently works with Staton on SCOOBY DOO for DC Comics.

The FEMME NOIR comic updates every Tuesday at http://www.supernaturalcrime.com.

THE ILLUSTRATORS - Starting in September 2006!
The Illustrators is a 14 part series exploring the history of American Illustrators, beginning with the late 1800s through the present day. Though artists such as Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth most commonly come to mind with the public, there exists an unknown history of illustrators that hasn't been explored in the documentary format. The series will present a detailed chronicle of illustrators and their work. Each program will showcase either a particular illustrator or genre of illustration, featuring interviews with several illustrators and historians. Drawing and painting techniques, design, composition, and color will be demonstrated by many of the artists in the series.

Director Paul Jilbert has compiled a collection of interviews with the following artists: Robert McGinnis, James Bama, Howard Terpning, James Avati, Syd Mead, Josh Agle (SHAG), Don Crowley, Bob Kuhn, Dick Bryers, Jim Silke, Dave Stevens, Glen Orbik, James Gurney, Dave Dorman, and others.

You can view preview clips from the upcoming programs. DVD's will be available starting in September 2006 with the release of Robert McGinnis: PAINTING THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER. This will be followed by James Bama.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
The Windy City website has been updated to add initial info on next year's show.

IMPORTANT NOTE – In mid-June, the hotel we’d used in April 2005 and had booked for April 2006, the Ramada Plaza O’Hare, informed us they’d been sold and were demolishing their convention facilities in late 2005.  We were fortunate enough to reach a deal with the Wyndham O’Hare (in many respects a nicer hotel) – which is right next to the Ramada – to take the con in 2006, but the only weekend they could accommodate us for 2006 was May 5-7.  So, both the hotel and dates have changed if you pre-registered at the past Windy City Pulp & PB Con!

This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, and in connecion with that anniversary, we're planning a number of special Shadow displays and events.  Please check the website for details as they're available.

Click here to download the pre-registration form.

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $30 for all three days, $20 for Friday only, $20 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only.  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com).  If you register before April 1, 2006, your membership badge will be mailed to you, allowing you to by-pass the registration line and pick up your program book and other materials at your convenience.

DEALER INFO:  Dealer setup begins Friday at 10am – the dealer room is open to the public from 2-6 pm Friday, 9 am-5 pm Saturday and 9 am-4pm Sunday.  There is no access to the room on Thursday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a membership.  Tables are SOLD OUT – please email to be placed on the waitlist.

GUEST OF HONOR:  Artist Jim Steranko – well known to pulp fans for his fantastic Shadow paperback covers, as well as a host of other terrific art – will be our Guest of Honor.  He will be displaying his original Shadow covers, as well as giving a presentation on Saturday.  Also, Frank Gladney, son of Shadow pulp artist Graves Gladney, will be a guest at the con and will be displaying a number of his father’s original Shadow pulp covers, as well as giving a presentation on Graves Gladney on Friday. Previous Guests of Honor Frank Robinson and Ernest Chiriacka will also be attending the con.

AUCTION:  The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm.  If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com.

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the second year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (http://www.illustration-magazine.com).  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film.  There will be one session Friday (beginning around 8 pm) and one session Saturday (following the auction).  More info will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (http://www.geocities.com/poppub/).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $60 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $35 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $20 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2006.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment).

CON SUITE:  Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby.

WEBSITE:  The con’s website is http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com.  We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until the time of the show, so please check it for the most recent information.

HOTEL INFO:  The Wyndham is only minutes from O’Hare airport (the hotel operates a free shuttle service which runs approximately every 20 minutes – and from the east, you can now circle around the city, rather than go through; from other directions, you don’t have to go through the city).  The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel).  One car per room parks free of charge; otherwise there’s a parking charge of $6.00 (no in and out privileges).
Please make sure to mention the convention when booking hotel rooms.  Thanks!

24 The Movie - Coming in 2008!
In a radio interview this week, Joel Surnow, the creator and executive producer of "24," revealed the following.
A "24" movie will be filmed in the summer of 2007 with a release date in 2008. The movie will still take place over a 24 hour period, but will consist of three 40-minute real-time parts allowing for Jack Bauer to travel greater distances during the course of the story and bring him to more varied locations.

It was also revealed that at the time the movie appears,
Kiefer Sutherland will probably be off the show.

Girasol Collectables - NEW Robert E. Howard Book Announcement!
Thanks to everyone for the praise for WEIRD WRITINGS Volume 1, which is now available.
Volume 2 is on track for late April and we know you'll be just as happy with it.

With that in mind, Girasol Collectables Inc. is pleased to announce ANOTHER major Robert E. Howard facsimile project! Fall 2006 will see the release of THE EXOTIC WRITINGS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD. EXOTIC WRITINGS will be another hardcover edition of approximately 500 facsimile pages, similar in format to
WEIRD WRITINGS, and will cover most of REH's exotic, historical, and detective adventure fiction.

This single volume archive will include Howard's works from ORIENTAL STORIES and MAGIC CARPET, STRANGE TALES, SPICY ADVENTURE (as Sam Walser), GOLDEN FLEECE, THRILLING MYSTERY, THRILLING ADVENTURES, SUPER DETECTIVE, STRANGE DETECTIVE STORIES plus a few other goodies. We will not be including any of his boxing stories, Breckenridge Elkins or other
western material. Included will be his pieces written under the Patrick Ervin pseudonym. Many of these pulps are extremely difficult to come by, and we're quite excited to be able to offer this companion volume to the WEIRD WRITINGS set. Once again, these high quality facsimile pages will be scanned right from the original pulps, with all the illustrations and no edits or omissions.

There will again be a small print run of a very limited, numbered edition true first printing as well as a regular volume of no fixed print run. While we're still working out some of the exact production details, we will be taking pre-release orders starting immediately and closing on May 31st, 2006. Pricing is as follows:

Pre-orders:
Limited Numbered Edition: $105 (save $10)
Regular Edition: $85 (save $10)
Shipping (either edition) +$5 (within North America, call for overseas pricing)
Once the pre-order offer expires, pricing will be $115 and $95 plus $5 s&h per book.

PULPCON 35 - August 3-6, 2006
PULPCON 35 will be held August 3-6, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio.
Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor
William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan.

Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey.

Robert E. Howard: A Collector’s Descriptive Bibliography of American and British Hardcover, Paperback, Magazine, Special and Amateur Editions, with a Biography by Leon Nielsen
- Coming Fall/Winter 2006
Robert E. Howard is among a select group of now-revered writers who published primarily in pulp magazines. His suicide at the age of 30 cut short his productive career, during which he created memorable characters like Conan of Cimmeria for such magazines as WEIRD TALES and ACTION STORIES. Pulps continued publishing Howard material posthumously, and his first hardcover book appeared in 1937, a year after his death. That book, A GENT FROM BEAR CREEK, is considered the holy grail of Howard collectors—only seven original copies are known to exist. With the dust jacket, the book’s value is estimated at $30,000.

This guide is an invaluable resource for Howard collectors, with information for every known published work. Initial chapters provide a biography, discuss Howard’s literary legacy, and give basic tips about book collecting, grading, buying and selling. The main body of the work is a bibliography of Howard’s published works from 1925 through 2004. Each entry includes a description and known details including publisher, date, print run, and estimated value. A thorough index locates the publication of every Howard story or poem.
