Hal Clement
Harry Clement Stubbs, who wrote science fiction as Hal Clement, died in his sleep October 29, at his home in Milton, Massachusetts.

Clement was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on May 30, 1922 and grew up in the Boston area. He received a BS in astronomy from Harvard, a M.Ed. from Boston University and a MS in chemistry from Simmons College. He was a high school school teacher whose fiction gained a reputation as quintessential hard SF -- science fiction firmly based on established physics, chemistry, and astronomy. His novels often depicted highly imagined alien worlds; the most famous was Mission of Gravity, set on a heavy, fast-spinning planet where the force of gravity is several times greater at the poles than at the equator. His last novel, Noise, was published earlier this year.

Clement was named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1999. Among other honors, Clement was a Retro-Hugo Award in 1996 for his 1945 story Uncommon Sense

Alien 5
Director Ridley Scott told paper tz that he and Sigourney Weaver might have worked out a deal to do Alien 5. "About six months ago Sigourney Weaver said to me: "I'd like there to be a fifth film because I'd like to make a clean exit. You virtually created me back then, don't you want to kill me?" The 65-year-old director added: "Since then I've been thinking about it. But first of all you need a good story. I can't work without a good script." According to the report – via Ananova – Scott’s now in talks with 20th Century Fox about Alien.
Casino Royale
Quentin Tarantino is hoping that Pierce Brosnan will agree to reprise his role as James Bond 007 for his planned remake of “Casino Royale”.

Indiana Jones
The Adventures of Indiana Jones - The Complete DVD Movie Collection has become the fastest-selling DVD movie collection of all time with more than $50 million in retail sales in the U.S. and Canada since its release on Oct. 21.
James Bond
According to the IMDb (via WENN), Eon Productions has pegged X-Men star Hugh Jackman as its frontrunner to replace Pierce Brosnan as the next James Bond. The Aussie thesp is reportedly "at the top" of a list of possible successors the 007 filmmakers have drawn up. "He's got everything the producers are looking for – dark good looks, an athletic build, a sense of humor and box-office clout. At 35, he is also the right age," the IMDb claims.

In related news, Variety reports that the Bond spin-off Jinx has been axed by MGM. The spin-off would have starred Halle Berry as her Die Another Day character, the CIA agent Jinx. Stephen Frears was in talks to direct from a screenplay by Bond vets Neal Purvis and Rob Wade. MGM reportedly wants to just focus on the next James Bond movie instead. That picture begins filming in January 2005 for a holiday '05 release. No director has been hired yet.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Although League of Extraordinary Gentlemen made next to nothing when released stateside, it has been quite the smash down under.  It is so successful that Australia is rumoured to be playing host to a soon to be filmed sequel. There have been numerous reports from actors and a source at Sydney's studios that a sequel is in the works. Word is, "LXG 2" will re-cast many of the main parts excluding Australian actress Peta Wilson who reportedly is interested in reprising her role as Mina Harker for the sequel - with auditions occurring shortly. A studio source confirmed such a rumour, but was unable to say whether it would film at Sydney's Fox or Kurnell studios, or when it would happen.
The Phantom
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Crusader Entertainment and Hyde Park have tapped Olympic gold medalist-turned-feature film scribe Mel Stewart to pen the project based on the well-known comic "The Phantom."
Printed Poison
It's All Hallows Eve, and Printed Poison - the ezine posessed by the ghost of a dead 30s pulp - is launching it's SPOOKtacular 4th issue. Inside you'll find a fall feast of frightening fiction from the Printed Poison Pulpateer Patrol.

Zorro 2 - Casting Underway
The Calgary Sun spoke with director Martin Campbell who spilled the beans about the forthcoming sequel Zorro 2. "We're in the final stages of negotiations with (Antonio Banderas) and Catherine Zeta-Jones," reveals Campbell. "If they are both available and everything goes as planned, we could begin shooting in Mexico in April or May for a 2005 release."  Campbell says the filmmakers had "rejected several scripts over the past four years, but have a great one now, which is why the project has been green-lit."

The director adds that Zeta-Jones, who has won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress since appearing in 1998's Mask of Zorro, will have "a great role" this time. "Her character will definitely be on a par with Antonio's this time." Zorro 2, claims Campbell, "is much more than your typical sequel. It's a full-out new film that uses the same two central characters."

Everything goes wrong and the three Predators face literally an army of thousands of aliens at the temple and faced with certain death they activate their self-destructs, completely destroying the aliens, the temple and any of the local inhabitants. James Bond
This week some insider details on the Current 007 goings on were revealed. "Clive Owen's the favourite, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen that way. His people might be suggesting he turn down such an offer, believing he's a much more capable actor than someone that'll be tied down to Bond movies for the next ten years. At the same time, they've got about three or four other big names to strike a deal with. It's anyone's game at the moment. Hugh Jackman is reportedly being seriously considered, and he's apparently very interested too. It just might go in his favour." Regardless, sounds like there are plenty of 007-related projects in the pipeline "...EON would kill to get Sean Connery back. Even for just one more. They've have been after him to do one more definitive Bond for years. You never know -and then of course, Quentin Tarantino is trying to buy the remake rights to Casino Royale, which probably has more chance of happening".
LOVECRAFT
LOVECRAFT is an original hardcover graphic novel from DC Comics pairing the writing talents of screenwriter Hans Rodionoff and comics writer Keith Giffen with the exquisite painted art of Enrique Breccia.

The Necronomicon.  Cthulhu.  A town called Arkham populated by bizarre and insane monstrosities.  These icons of horror were envisioned by one man: Howard Philips Lovecraft.  But were these visions of horror only in his mind, or could he see into a world that couldn't be seen?

From his bizarre childhood, when his mother would dress him as a girl, to his adult days, when he would meet Harry Houdini, Lovecraft was haunted by grotesque visions.  He dedicated his life to writing blood-boiling "fictional" tales, all in an attempt to appease his living nightmares.  But that obsession would take its toll.  His parents both sent to asylums and his loving wife driven away, Lovecraft would spend most of his life as a recluse, his only company being his demons and the occasional visit to his publisher.  Some called him insane.  Some called him a genius.  Either way, the story of America's greatest horror writer is a tale as haunting as the demons that plagued him.

LOVECRAFT is written by Hans Rodionoff; adapted by Keith Giffen; art and cover by Enrique Breccia.
144 pages, $24.95, in stores on February 4, 2004.

LOVECRAFT can be pre-ordered from the November PREVIEWS (available October 29th).
The Diamond Item Code is NOV03 0275.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean hit the $300 million mark last weekend.
The only other film hitting that mark this year was another Disney flick, Finding Nemo

According to Variety, plans may be afoot to do back-to-back sequels shot in one simultaneous production.
Sources close to the film say the producers are pondering the possibility of back-to-back sequels, and talks have begun to secure the cast should Disney pursue that avenue. Returning for at least one sequel are producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott (who haven't completed the script), and talent Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley.  Orlando Bloom has reportedly signed for two sequels according to EOnline!.

Pulp Adventurecon
Bold Venture Press has announced that the show planned for November 8, 2003 at the Ramada Inn, Bordentown,
NJ is cancelled.  BVP really wanted to go ahead with the show, but circumstances are forcing the cancellation.  BVP plans to set a new date for 2004 within the next month or so, and begin aggressively promoting the 2004 show beginning in January. BVP appreciates everyone's interest up to this point and hopes next year's show will more than make up for the absence of this year's show.

This week on KGO-AM 810 San Francisco, Dr. Clive Cussler was interviewed by radio host Pete Wilson. In the interview, he talked about how bad "Raise the Titanic" went, he also mentioned about how he had casting and script approval for this film and the films that follow after this one. Now, apparently Dr. Cussler has already turned down four scripts and Paramount and Crusader Entertainment are going with a script that he really DOES NOT like and adding story lines that are not even in the book and taking away some parts from the book that they think isn't dramatic enough. Dr. Cussler also added they are going to have big trouble if they continue with this script which is what appears to be what they are going to do. One of the original story lines in the book that they think isn't dramatic enough takes place close to the beginning of the book. It starts off as a group of tourists visit a village. Before anyone realizes what's happening the villagers attack and end up cannibalizing the tourists. The tour guide survives. Dr. Cussler stated he could not believe a scene like this wasn't dramatic enough for them. He also stated that their replacement was very dull".
The Six Million Dollar Man
Jim Carrey is taking over for Lee Majors in the role of The Six Million Dollar Man!
According to Variety, Carrey will star in a big-screen comedic retelling of the popular 1970s series which starred Majors as Air Force Colonel Steve Austin. Here's the key elements from a Miramax press release in regards to the announcement: "The project, long in development, was put on the fast track after the studio met with superstar Jim Carrey and set the actor up with writer/director Todd Phillips ("Road Trip", "Old School"). 'Six' will be written and directed by Phillips, Dimension Films and Universal Pictures will co-finance.
Star Wars Episodes VII-IX Possible?
The Dark Horizons Web site reported a new rumor that a long-hoped-for and "long-denied" third trilogy of Star Wars films may be  back on the drawing board.  Citing an anonymous "insider source," the site reported that a sequel trilogy "might happen."

Star Wars creator George Lucas originally told journalists that his plan was to create three trilogies of films: the original one that included the first Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, a prequel trilogy and a sequel trilogy that would pick up the story after the events in Jedi, consisting of Episode VII through IX. Subsequently, Lucas said he never intended to do the sequel trilogy.

But now, the source told Dark Horizons, "apparently there is some talk, even to the point of [Steven] Spielberg" who was interested in doing [Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones] at one point "stepping in for Lucas, who may want to write, but probably won't want to direct." The source added that it's possible Lucas could strike a deal with writer/director Frank Darabont, who is writing the script for the proposed fourth Indiana Jones movie, to write the sequel scripts.

THE OAKDALE AFFAIR by Edgar Rice Burroughs
"The house on the hill showed lights only upon the first floor -- in the spacious reception hall, the dining room, and those more or less mysterious purlieus thereof from which emanate disagreeable odors and agreeable foods.

From behind a low bush across the wide lawn a pair of eyes transferred to an alert brain these simple perceptions from which the brain deduced with Sherlockian accuracy and Raffleian purpose that the family of the president of The First National Bank of -- Oh, let's call it Oakdale -- was at dinner, that the servants were below stairs and the second floor deserted.

The owner of the eyes had but recently descended from the quarters of the chauffeur above the garage which he had entered as a thief in the night and quitted appareled in a perfectly good suit of clothes belonging to the gentlemanly chauffeur and a soft, checked cap which was now pulled well down over a pair of large brown eyes in which a rather strained expression ight have suggested to an alienist a certain neophytism which even the stern set of well shaped lips could not effectually belie."

King Conan: Crown of Iron
The Arnold Fans confirms that writer/director John Milius' King Conan: Crown of Iron is indeed moving forwards sans Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role. Although Arnold needed to walk away from the project, Milius understands Arnold's decision and knows he will make a great Governor. One hour after Arnold announced his decision to run on the Jay Leno Show, Arnold phoned Milius and said he was sorry that King Conan would not happen. Once again, Milius was invited over to the Schwarzenegger's for dinner. Despite the project collapsing, the two remain good friends. Milius must now recast a role that's synonymous with Schwarzenegger. While Milius likes former TV Conan Ralf Moeller, he's not who is being considered to replace Arnold.

The Arnold Fans claims that Milius believes "the wrestler 'Triple H' might be a better and grittier fit." They also like his acting and believe he is the perfect age to show the transition from a younger Conan (flashbacks) and could also play the gray-bearded Conan. Milius and Triple H are getting along great already. The two are working on a new kick-ass action movie called Journey of the Deadman.

The Arnold Fans add that Milius is anxious to get the project going again and to continue the Conan mythology of kings, wizards and women of the finest stalk. He wants to film in Turkey and Ron Cobb and Basil Poledouris are anxious also to return.

Thanks to Dark Horizons for the information.

Recoverings - New ERB dust jackets from Normand Designs!
Phil Normand's Recoverings web site has been updated with new Edgar Rice Burroughs dust jacket reproductions. Now available among the regular McClurg first edition jackets are JUNGLE TALES OF TARZAN, THE CHESSMEN OF MARS, and THE MOON MAID.

Also new is the Alternate Jacket for A FIGHTING MAN OF MARS, using the Laurence Herndon cover from THE BLUE BOOK MAGAZINE of May, 1930. This is the jacket that was proposed by Metropolitan for the book, but which was nixed by Burroughs because he didn't like Herndon's art. So he wound up with Hugh Hutton's ungainly wraparound instead. This jacket features illustrations on the back from foreign language editions of Tarzan novels, just like the original was planned.

The major announcement, however, is the pre-publication offer for the limited, letterpress edition of the jacket for TARZAN OF THE APES. This is the first truly authentic reproduction of this important and rare dust jacket. Printed on a Heidelberg Windmill platen press in three colors on a heavy, uncoated stock that matches the original, the jacket is offered in two versions: a regular edition of 500 copies for the pre-publication price of $50.00, and a special, signature edition of 90 copies stamped with ERB's personal signature stamp at ERB. Inc. for $100.00

ALAN MOORE'S YUGGOTH CULTURES #1- Available on October 15th!
ALAN MOORE'S YUGGOTH CULTURES AND OTHER GROWTHS will arrive in comic shops on Wednesday, 15 October. It is published by Avatar Press.   The three part, 40 page per issue series, contains stories by Moore and artwork from a number of high-profile creators including Bryan Talbot, Val Semieks, Oscar Zarate, Jacen Burrows (ALAN MOORE'S THE COURTYARD, WARREN ELLIS' SCARS), Juan Jose Ryp (ALAN MOORE'S ANOTHER SUBURBAN ROMANCE, FRANK MILLER'S ROBOCOP), and Mike Wolfer (WARREN ELLIS' STRANGE KILLINGS).

The series features classic and little-known comic book stories from throughout Moore's career, some hard-to-find tales that have appeared only in comic books outside the U.S., and some surviving stories from the tragically-lost Lovecraftian Moore epic Yuggoth Cultures, which will be seen here in comic book form for the first time. The YUGGOTH CULTURES AND OTHER GROWTHS series will include such gems as the now-completed first part of Moore and Bryan Talbot's important lost classic NIGHTJAR, a story started 20 years ago which was supposed to appear in UK comic book WARRIOR, the legendary anthology where other Moore classics such as MIRACLEMAN and V FOR VENDETTA appeared.

As for the Lovecraftian fragments from the series, those stories are also emerging from a tragically-lost project of a different kind. "Yuggoth Cultures was originally intended as a series of texts that would have been inspired by HP Lovecraft's poem cycle FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH," recalls Alan Moore. "Unfortunately, when the texts were about half completed, I left the only copy of three or four of them in a London taxi cab. Since it was impossible to reconstruct, the work went on hold, remaining incomplete. Originally, THE COURTYARD was part of the proposed Yuggoth Cultures package, but there were some other interesting little fragments left over, and I suppose that what's gathered in this series is a collection of those and other interesting fragments. Things from projects that were, for one reason or another, never completed, which perhaps which hold some interest in their own right. I'm looking forward to seeing what is done with them."

Although several of the stories in this new series were scripted by Moore for comic books, the stories originally written for the Yuggoth Cultures series of texts are being adapted by frequent Moore collaborator Antony Johnston (ALAN MOORE'S THE COURTYARD, ALAN MOORE'S ANOTHER SUBURBAN ROMANCE) in consultation with Moore. "Once again I've risked my health and sanity, channeling the Northampton Bard through my weak plebiscite mind for the sake of entertainment. With each adaptation my grip on reality grows weaker, yet my stubble grows longer; a curious paradox, I hope you'll agree. Stop me if you've heard this one before, but working with Alan on these stories has been an absolute pleasure. The pieces I've handled are some of the strangest, most evocative things I've read, forcing me to think in strange and unnatural ways to get the best results possible. I'm really happy with it."

King Conan: Crown of Iron
According to ComingSoon.net, writer/director John Milius definitely plans to go forward with King Conan: Crown of Iron without the newly-elected California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  "This could be John's best script ever," says a source about the Conan the Barbarian follow-up. There's a challenging Conan role and it contains five significant female roles.  Someone close to the project says there will be advantages about going with another actor. It'll be cheaper to make, no studio interference, it'll be possible to shoot in exotic locales for which Arnold wouldn't get insurance from the studio, and less CGI.

Lost in Space
The WB has won the rights to the new LOST IN SPACE, shelling out more than $2 million for the red-hot family drama. At least three other webs made serious bids for the 20th Century Fox TV/Fox TV Studios project.  Along with its $2 million-plus pilot commitment, the WB had to rework its business template with 20th in order to make the deal, agreeing to both a premium license fee of roughly $1.2 million per episode and a provision that ensures the studio will, in success, eventually snag a full-cost license fee for the series.

The new series is from director John Woo and writer Doug Petrie along with Synthesis Entertainment. Regency and 20th Century Fox are producing. The pilot will return the show to its roots as a family drama, which is what Allen intended when he penned the original pilot, the trade paper reported.  The project will be set about 100 years in the future and will feature a relatable, contemporary family at its core. Petrie and Woo have reportedly come up with a great contemporary take on this property that makes it accessible and a great coming-of-age story.  The new LOST IN SPACE won't feature a Dr. Smith character, though there will be a robot.

The WB has committed only to a pilot production at this point. We'll likely have to wait till May to see if the project, set in 2097, goes forward as a series. Woo will likely direct the pilot episode.

Adventure House - Pulp Fictioneers
Coming in March 2004 from Adventure House is PULP FICTIONEERS, compiled and edited by John Locke.
PULP FICTIONEERS will be published in a 6x9 softcover for $20 and a limited edition hardcover $35.
This volume contains essays on the pulp industry by:
Thomas Thursday              Arthur J. Burks
Hugh B. Cave                    Hugo Gernsback
Wallace R. Bamber            Aron M. Mathieu
George C. Henderson         James W. Egan
Walter Gibson                    Henry Kuttner
Chuck Martin                     and more....editors...publishers
It will be illustrated and 240 pages in length.

Here is what Adventure House says about the book:
This collection is the result of combing through hundreds of issues of writing journals from the pulp era, mostly WRITER'S DIGEST and AUTHOR & JOURNALIST, but also a variety of lesser-known magazines: THE WRITER, THE EDITOR, WRITER'S REVIEW, and two magazines issued by correspondence schools, WRITERS' MARKETS AND METHODS and WRITER'S MONTHLY. One of the surprises of the project was in discovering how many magazines were devoted to the craft of writing at that time. This speaks, in some measure, to the opportunities presented by the pulps to the freelance writer. With hundreds of pulp magazines publishing thousands of stories, there may never have been a better time for making money selling fiction.

Many of the pulp-related articles in these journals deal with storytelling technique, usually genre-specific, e.g. "Action in Westerns," "Live Your Love Story," or "Why Aren't Your Detective Stories Selling?" Others assess the markets and advise on slanting for specific titles. But another category of article presents behind-the-scenes looks into the pulp world, the rise and fall of the business, the experiences of writers, editors, and publishers. And it is the most interesting and informative of this latter group that PULP FICTIONEERS attempts to gathers together.

Alien vs. Predator
Variety reports that Lance Henriksen is joining Aliens vs. Predator. He is not reprising his part of the android, Bishop, the character he played in Aliens.  According to Variety, Henriksen will portray a billionaire industrialist who finances an expedition to the Antarctic to uncover an ancient pyramid and insists on joining the scientists on the journey. When they arrive, they discover two alien races engaged in the ultimate battle. Paul W.S. Anderson is helming the film written by Shane Salerno and Anderson. Shooting begins late October in Prague.

Charlie Chan
Lucy Liu is once again talking about her plans for resurrecting Charlie Chan. Liu will be playing Charlie Chan's granddaughter, who's also named Charlie," Liu says. "So she's going to be the next Charlie Chan."

Liu has enlisted X2: X-Men United screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris to help her reinvent Chan for the 21st century. "I'm sure it's going to be a commercial film," Liu added. "I don't think it's going to be something that's an alternative version of Charlie Chan. I'd like to bring a dark edge to it, if that's possible, but we have to see. I just want people to enjoy and appreciate it."   The film's in early stages of development at Twentieth Century Fox.

Charlie Chan was created by Earl Derr Biggers. Chan was a detective who always found himself solving murder cases in exotic places despite the bumbling efforts of a son (or two) who would interfere while trying to help.

James Bond
According to the IMDB, Clive Owen is set to be announced as the new 007 next year. Pierce Brosnan is reportedly planning to announce the next Bond film will be his last in a press conference in January or February. According to British tabloid the Daily Record, movie bosses are expected to announce Clive, 38, will take over the role - after being recommended by 50-year- old Pierce. An insider says, "Clive's the one. There have been rumors about Clive, but these rumors are getting louder and louder now. No one at the top will come out and admit it, but the claims it's Clive are coming from different sources within EON, who make the Bond films. Seeing Clive in Croupier brought him to the Bond maker's attention. He looks good in a tuxedo and has that edge which makes him attractive to the ladies, but liked by the guys. He's not hugely known, but has done some good films and is at least a name people recognize."
Mark of Zorro
MARK OF ZORRO will be released on DVD October 7th.
This swashbuckling remake of the silent classic stars Tyrone Power as the dashing masked avenger who single-handedly saves Los Angeles from Spanish despots.
The retail price is $19.98.
