ALIAS star Jennifer Garner has been approached by the Central Intelligence Agency to take part in a recruitment video that would be shown to college students. The agency hopes other members of the ALIAS cast will take part as well.

"We feel that Miss Garner, both in character as Agent Sydney Bristow and as herself, embodies the intelligence, enthusiasm and dedication that we're looking for," Chase Brandon, the CIA's entertainment-industry liaison, tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Our continuing efforts to enlist the best and the brightest would be admirably served by having her support."

Collectors Press
Coming in October from Collectors Press is THE SILVER AGE OF COMIC BOOK ART DELUXE by Arlen Schumer.

Here is what Collectors Press has to say:
They were pioneers of their art and of their generation, taking comic book art to an astonishing new level and paving the way for future artists. They were the artists of the Silver Age of comics (1956-1970), and their work is celebrated in the new book from Collectors Press THE SILVER AGE OF COMIC BOOK ART.

The first book dedicated to the Silver Age and the artists that defined it, author Arlen Schumer highlights the careers of eight acknowledged Hall of Fame artists who drew definitive versions of the industry's great characters. Silver Age concentrates on the importance of these artists, their work and their effects on the medium, while also commenting on the literary and sociological aspects of the era. Featuring biographical text and quotes and ideas from the artists themselves, Silver Age fully immerses the reader into the art form and the creative geniuses that produced it.

Designed by the author using a distinctive graphic style, actual comic book art is enlarged to full and double-page spreads, giving a comic book look and feel. In doing so, Schumer has designed the definitive art book that pays proper homage to this great era of comic books and the amazing artists responsible for it.

Their groundbreaking techniques in visual and mechanical effects came in an era before computer-generated effects existed, offering unique challenges and spectacular results. ILM technicians explain how miniatures, matte paintings, morphing and more made Indy's spectacular quests and supernatural adventures into unforgettable film experiences.

Taking an in-depth adventure in sound, The Sound of Indiana Jones joins Academy Award®-winning sound designer Ben Burtt as he reveals the crucial role that sound effects and editing played in the Indiana Jones films, while also providing an aural history behind some of the most talked-about scenes.

The Stunts of Indiana Jones goes behind the scenes to witness the intense coordination required by the entire production team to make certain a death-defying scene looks convincing on film. This documentary reveals how the Indy films paid homage to the past and were pivotal to the future of heart-stopping, perilous movie stunts.

Moonstone Books
Moonstone Books will release the following new titles in December.

The Phantom: Valley of the Golden Men
Written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Art Nichols, Terry Pallot, and Lou Manna with a cover by Joel Naprstek.  48pgs, color, squarebound, self-contained, $6.95

An airplane crashes in Bangalla, carrying both a much needed vaccine AND Diana Walker. THE PHANTOM wastes no time making his way onto the scene, but a tribe of unusual natives find his quarry first!  The "Golden Men" of whispered legend hold both medicine and Mrs.Phantom as a prize in a bloody competition "The Ghost Who Walks" must be victorious in.  But closing in quick are the Singh pirates, hungry for the riches the vaccine will fetch on the black market!

Kolchak the Night Stalker: Pain Most Human
Written by CJ Henderson, art by Greg Scott, colors by Andre Maitland, cover by Doug Klauba.
48pgs, color, squarebound, self-contained, $6.95

This issue really cranks up the noir, as it dives deep into Kolchak's very soul. He begged Tony for a nice, normal lead, and that's what he got. Seems an Air Force base in upstate New York's engaged in a little cover up, so our man Carl Kolchak high-tails it cross country in a fresh pressed suit and a smile on his face. Using his singular reporting skills, and his annoying interpersonal skills, he gets all the answers allright. Too bad these answers may send him straight to an insane asylum. How cruel is Man? Wanna find out? Carl did, and would love to lay it out for you. Right here. Right now.

Murphy Anderson - Available 20 August in comic shops!

Bison Frontiers of Imagination
Arriving in fall/winter 2003 are:

The Eternal Savage By Edgar Rice Burroughs
Time travel, a millennium-spanning romance, and rousing action in modern African jungles and the untamed prehistoric wilderness ignite this classic adventure tale from the pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Nu, a warrior from the Stone Age, is buried alive in an earthquake while stalking a saber-toothed tiger. Awakening thousands of years later on Tarzans estate in Africa, he gives his heart to Victoria Custer of Nebraska, a visitor to the estate, who is the reincarnation of Nus Stone Age love, Nat-ul. But other men treacherously compete for the love of Victoria in modern Africa and for the heart of Nat-ul in the distant past. Set in both a terrifyingly dangerous primeval setting and the beloved world of Tarzan, The Eternal Savage movingly reveals whether eternal love is strong enough to triumph over undying adversity. This is a trade paperback for $11.95.

A Journey in Other Worlds By John Jacob Astor
What did our ancestors dream of when they gazed up at the stars and looked beyond the present? Wildly imaginative but grounded in reasoned scientific speculation, A Journey in Other Worlds races far ahead of the nineteenth century to imagine what life would be like in the year 2000. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Earth is effectively a corporate technocracy, with big businesses using incredible advances in science to improve life on the planet as a whole. Seeking other planets habitable for the growing human population, the spaceship Callisto, powered by an antigravitational force known as apergy, embarks on a momentous tour of the solar system. Jupiter proves to be a wilderness paradise, full of threatening beasts and landscapes of inspired beauty, where the explorers must fight for their lives. Dangers less tangible but equally deadly await the Callisto crew on Saturn, which yields profound secrets about their fate and the ultimate destiny of mankind.

Thoughtful, adventurous, and replete with a dazzling array of futuristic devices, A Journey in Other Worlds is a classic, unforgettable story of utopias and humankinds restless exploration of the stars.
This is a trade paperback for $16.95.

We do not reprint previously published material.

BLOOD `N' THUNDER
BLOOD `N' THUNDER #5 is now available!
The fifth big issue (Summer 2003) is packed end to end with articles and reviews; there was no room for a story reprint this time around.  Click here or on the image at the right for a larger picture.

The cover story is De Soto, Master of Menace, a tribute to the great pulp painter Rafael de Soto. The front cover features a heretofore unpublished de Soto painting of the Spider--not a pulp-cover recreation, but an original composition commissioned by a fan in the late `80s. Inside, de Soto candidly reminisces about his career in a first-person essay pieced together from several videotaped conversations. Accompanying de Soto's recollections are a choice selection of his pulp covers and a brace of previously unpublished pencil sketches for covers (including a SPIDER) that were rejected by Popular Publications back in the `40s.

Peter Ruber's KING OF THE PULPS, a comprehensive overview of the career of the legendary H. Bedford-Jones, is taken from the book Peter recently co-authored with Darrell Richardson and Victor Berch. It's a substantial essay that discusses HB-J's writing habits and style, and identifies the long-running series he did for such pulps as ARGOSY and BLUE BOOK. Peter's article is a great primer for those who are familiar with the name but not the work, and it too is accompanied by numerous cover reprints.

Our "Tricks of the Trade" department features a fascinating piece by prolific mystery novelist Frank Gruber. For This Is the Way I Make My Bread, originally published in a 1941 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST, Gruber describes an average weekduring which he finds innumerable ways to avoid sitting down in front of a typewriter. Loaded with references to the era's top writers and editors of pulps, this delightful article paints a fascinating picture of a writer's life during the heyday of fiction magazines.

In this issue's "From the Top Shelf," BnT editor Ed Hulse reviews the March 1933 issue of DIME MYSTERY BOOKthe one issue not covered in Shawn Danowski's excellent survey of the magazine in Mike Chomko's PURPLE PROSE. And it's a good issue, too, featuring a full-length novel in the Sax Rohmer tradition.

"Cliffhanger Classics" takes a lengthy look at NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN, the 1935 serial produced in part by Edgar Rice Burroughs himself. While this film has been covered beforeespecially in the ERB fanzinesour piece includes previously undisclosed information about the production, along with extensive quotes from Tarzan himself, 96-year-old Herman Brix (aka Bruce Bennett), who recently granted BnT an exclusive interview. In this lengthy article we debunk several of the oft-reported myths surrounding the NAoT serial.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #5 is 36 pages and sports a full-color cover.  It will be available at Pulpcon, and subscribers in attendance are encouraged to stop by the BNT table and pick up their copies. Subscriber copies will be mailed the week following Pulpcon.  Other interested persons can obtain a copy by sending $6.00 to:

Clark Ashton Smith
The Eldritch Dark Monthly Newsletter announced that they found copies of the typescripts of two, stories written by Clark Ashton Smith that were believed to be lost. The first of these is The Red World of Polaris, a story written for WONDER STORIES in August 1930. A sequel to Marooned in Andromeda, this 13,000 word adventure of Captain Volmar features some fine poetic and atmospheric writing, and was rejected by editor David Lasser for "not enough action." The second story, The Face by the River, is a 2500 word psychological ghost story dating from October 1930.

Night Shade Books will publish RED WORLD OF POLARIS by Clark Ashton Smith in August 2003.
The Limited edition (500 copies) will contain all of the stories, edited by Smith scholars Scott Connors and Ron Hilgar, as well as an introduction. Night Shade is also working on artwork and a celebrity afterword, to be announced as soon as it is nailed down. The retail price is $35 plus shipping. This book is selling fast!

A publisher has been found for The Face by the River, but they aren't quite ready to make an announcement just yet.

THE PLEASURES OF A FUTUROSCOPE By Lord Dunsany
Edited by S. T. Joshi
October 2003:  Hardcover: $32.95

Lord Dunsany, Irish master of fantasy, was the author of more than a dozen novels, hundreds of short stories, poems, and essays, and dozens of plays. And yet, his last major work, The Pleasures of a Futuroscope, has remained unpublished until this edition. In this powerful and moving novel, written in 1955, a futuroscope-a device that allows a viewer to see into the near or distant future-reveals an awful fate for humanity: a nuclear holocaust has destroyed nearly all human life on the planet. The great city of London is now merely an immense crater, filled in with water from the Thames. The pitiful remnants of humanity have been reduced to a Stone Age existence. The narrator, obsessively looking through the futuroscope, focuses upon the plight of a single family in their struggles to survive and fend off the many enemies, both animal and human, that surround them. When one of their number is kidnapped by a band of gypsies, we can only wonder at her fate in this brave new world of the distant future. Gripping, horrifying, touching, and fascinating, The Pleasures of a Futuroscope show that Lord Dunsany had retained his literary powers undiminished to the end of his life.

Lord Dunsany (1878-1957) was the author of The Gods of Pegana (1905), A Dreamer's Tales (1910), and many other volumes that have made him a legend in the realm of fantasy. Such novels as The King of Elfland's Daughter (1924) and The Blessing of Pan (1927) cemented his reputation. In The Curse of the Wise Woman (1933) and later works, he drew upon the people and heritage of his native Ireland, while such plays as The Gods of the Mountain (1911) and The Queen's Enemies (1916) commanded the British and American stage for decades.

Lost Treasures from the Pulps - Collections One and Two!
Announcing the first publication of LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS, a new series of hardcover books collecting some of the great series stories that have never been reprinted from the pulp magazines.  All books are edited by long-time pulp fan, historian, and collector, Robert Weinberg, and published by George A. Vanderburgh of The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box Press.

The Compleat Peter the Brazen
Now available is The Compleat Peter the Brazen by George F. Worts, a two-volume hardcover set reprinting the entire Peter the Brazen saga from the pages of ARGOSY magazine.   Each volume is 9x12, in full color jacket, and contains over 300,000 words of high adventure fiction.  Book One is 388 double-column pages, while Book Two is 402 double-column pages. Click here or in the images to the right for larger images.

The Peter the Brazen adventure series has long been considered by pulp fans as perhaps the greatest action series ever to be published in the pulp magazines.  In particular, Peters three adventures fighting the Chinese mastermind, the Blue Scorpion, rank among the finest heroic adventures ever written.   While a few Peter the Brazen stories have been reprinted in scarce fan publications, a majority of these novelets and novels have been out of print for more than a half-century.

Complimenting the entire series of Peter the Brazen stories, from 1919-1920 and 1930-1935, these volumes include special articles by Rick Lai and Robert Weinberg on the stories, their settings, and their author, George F. Worts.  Both volumes are newly typeset on quality paper with matching dust jackets.  Along with reproductions of all the covers and interior illustrations from the series, the books also include new maps showing the world of Peter the Brazen.

The set of two books will be available sometime in late April.  An advance set of the books should be available at the Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show in April, but regular copies will not be shipped until a few weeks after the show.   LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS feature open print runs, so the books will never be out of print.  However, after the first printing of the volumes, it may be months before they are available again.  If you want to pre-order your set, for delivery on publication, now is the time to do so.

Cost per two-volume set is $150.00.  (the two books are only sold as a set)  Postage is $10 due to the weight of these immense volumes.  No checks will be cashed until the books are on hand and ready for shipping.
Payment in US Funds, please.  Sorry but we do not take charge card orders at present.
Order from: The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box, PO Box 204, Shelburne, Ontario Canada L0N 1S0.

Minions of the Shadow
Now available is the 2nd publication of the series, Minions of the Shadow The Collected Mark Nevin- Omega Novels by William Gray Beyer.   This stand-alone 6x9 hardcover volume, with color jacket by Rudolph Belarski, reprints the four Minions novels Minions of the Moon, Minions of Mars, Minions of Mercury, and Minions of the Shadow, from ARGOSY in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Minions of the Moon was reprinted in hardcover over fifty years ago, and the other three novels have never been reprinted.  Newly typeset, 481 pages.

Mark Nevin entered the hospital one morning for routine surgery and awoke six thousand years later.  It was a world reverted to barbarism and savagery, filled with cannibals, pseudo-Vikings and the very beautiful but stoic, Nona Barr.  Mark hadnt planned to save the world, but thats what he found himself doing, in the company of a meddling super-being that called itself Omega, the last survivor of an ancient lunar culture.  All Mark had to do was defeat the two evil Russian brains-in-the-jar who couldnt be killed.  And that was only Marks first adventure in the future!
Four very entertaining, delightfully wacky, humorous science fiction novels that are as much fun now as when they were originally published more than sixty years ago, these are definitely LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS!

This book will always remain available.  However, after the first printing of the volume, it may be months before it is available again.  Cost for this very thick hardcover is $50.  Postage is $5.

Lost Treasures from the Pulps - Collection Three
Coming in November is the third collection of LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS featuring THE MEMOIRS OF HORATIO HUMBERTON by J. Paul Suter, introduction by Robert Weinberg.

A total of ten adventure novelettes appeared in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE between July 1932 and January 1937 featuring the Necrologist Sleuth, Horatio Humberton. These stories feature elements of the supernatural, and the outrageous, and are collected here for the first time. Unfortunately only one featured a cover illustration for the magazine. You will not be disappointed with these hard-boiled escapades, bordering on humorous escapist detective fiction.  The ten stories are:

1. The Angel of the Damned
2. Eyes of the Dead
3. The Werewolf Horrors
4. The Mill of Horror
5. Seconds of Doom
6. Shoes for the Dead
7. Post Mortem
8. Dead and Buried
9. The Hairy Death
10. The Corpse the Cat Dragged In

Writing in THE DIME DETECTIVES (The Mysterious Press, 1988), Ron Goulart said: "Horatio Humberton...was a part-time dick and a full-time undertaker. 'Though Horatio Humberton earned the principal part of his living by the
direction of funerals," it was explained "another science, the study of crime, was much nearer his heart. When it came to embalming a murdered man, he could do a good job; but he would be far more enthusiastic in the task of
finding the murderer."

The cover illustration mentioned in Battered Silicon's press release was by William Reusswig and appeared on the July 1932 issue of DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE. It is pictured at the right.  A larger image is available for viewing at The Pulp Gallery at the following address: http://albums.photo.epson.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1655461&a=12689755&f=0

Purple Prose 17
PURPLE PROSE 17 is now available!
The lead article, written by Will Murray, examines the editorial evolution of Popular Publications during the editorial reign of Rogers Terrill. Alfred Jan contributes a history of the confession pulps, suggesting that Popular's Candid Confessions was the cream of the crop. Albert Tonik offers an interview with Agatha Reed, the widow of pulp author G. T. Fleming-Roberts. Ms. Reed discusses the home life of the working pulp author. The interview is introduced by a biography and appreciation of Fleming-Roberts, written by Monte Herridge. Closing out the issue are letters from readers, most of them suggesting further corrections to "Notes and Name Droppings from an Editor's Chair," Harry Steeger's pulp history, which ran in issue #16. There's also the usual gallery of pulp cover reproductions plus interior illustrations from a wide variety of pulps. The cover is contributed by the great Frank Hamilton, through a design provided by Neil Mechem.

The following titles are now available from Wildside Press (http://www.wildsidepress.com/index2fr.htm):

THE MOON MAID by Edgar Rice Burroughs

THE MOON MAID is a tale of adventure in space, of the secret of the moon -- of humanlike quadrupeds and stranger fantastic things, all wrapped around an idea like something Robert Heinlein would write. Strange and true: at the moment Burroughs was writing Russia had just fallen to the communists, and terrible things were happening to personal liberty in that land. And so he wrote about fighting for the things he believed in, and so he made no bones about his political leanings -- or his fear for the future, not just for America, but for the world at large.

228 pages, Trade Hardcover, ISBN: 1-59224-709-1,  $32.95

THE VALLEY OF FEAR by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

"You have heard me speak of Professor Moriarty? The greatest schemer of all time, the organizer of every deviltry, the controlling brain of the  underworld, a brain which might have made or marred the destiny of nations  -- That's genius, Watson. But if I am spared by lesser men, our day will  surely come."  THE VALLEY OF FEAR contains tales of Sherlock Holmes originally published in The Strand.  Arthur Conan Doyle viewed his spiritualistic writings as far more important than his Holmes stories, but at best today, his abiding interest in the supernatural is remembered because he believed in ersatz fairy photos.  Many readers know that, frustrated at Holmes' popularity, Doyle killed Holmes off, but thanks to generous payments from American magazines, he brought the great detective back.  Millions of words have been written in an attempt to explain Holmes' popularity.  Along with Tarzan, James Bond and a few others, Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character who has taken on a life of his own -- in fact, he seems as though he might have been a real Victorian-era detective, for all his eccentricities.  221-B Baker Street is a real address.  Holmes, however, really isn't a real man.  He's an immortal.

220 pages, Trade Hardcover,  ISBN: 1-59224-690-7,  $32.95
