Lost Treasures from the Pulps - Collections One and Two! Announcing the first publication of LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS, a new series of hardcover books collecting some of the great series stories that have never been reprinted from the pulp magazines. All books are edited by long-time pulp fan, historian, and collector, Robert Weinberg, and published by George A. Vanderburgh of The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box Press. The Compleat
Peter the Brazen The Peter the Brazen adventure series has long been considered by pulp fans as perhaps the greatest action series ever to be published in the pulp magazines. In particular, Peter’s three adventures fighting the Chinese mastermind, the Blue Scorpion, rank among the finest heroic adventures ever written. While a few Peter the Brazen stories have been reprinted in scarce fan publications, a majority of these novelets and novels have been out of print for more than a half-century. Complimenting the entire series of Peter the Brazen stories, from 1919-1920 and 1930-1935, these volumes include special articles by Rick Lai and Robert Weinberg on the stories, their settings, and their author, George F. Worts. Both volumes are newly typeset on quality paper with matching dust jackets. Along with reproductions of all the covers and interior illustrations from the series, the books also include new maps showing the world of Peter the Brazen. The set of two books will be available sometime in late April. An advance set of the books should be available at the Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show in April, but regular copies will not be shipped until a few weeks after the show. LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS feature open print runs, so the books will never be out of print. However, after the first printing of the volumes, it may be months before they are available again. If you want to pre-order your set, for delivery on publication, now is the time to do so. Cost
per two-volume set is $150.00. (the two books are only sold as a set)
Postage is $10 due to the weight of these immense volumes. No checks will
be cashed until the books are on hand and ready for shipping. Minions
of the Shadow Mark
Nevin entered the hospital one morning for routine surgery and awoke six thousand
years later. It was a world reverted to barbarism and savagery, filled with
cannibals, pseudo-Vikings and the very beautiful but stoic, Nona Barr. Mark
hadn’t planned to save the world, but that’s what he found himself
doing, in the company of a meddling super-being that called itself Omega, the
last survivor of an ancient lunar culture. All Mark had to do was defeat
the two evil Russian brains-in-the-jar who couldn’t be killed. And
that was only Mark’s first adventure in the future! This
book will always remain available. However, after the first printing of
the volume, it may be months before it is available again. If you want to
pre-order your copy for delivery on publication, now is the time to do so.
Cost for this very thick hardcover is $50. Postage is $5. No
checks will be cashed until the books are on hand and ready for shipping.
Payment in US Funds, please. Sorry but we do not take charge card orders
at present. LOST TREASURES

Moonstone Books SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERIES VOL.1 TPB is now available. This tome reprints the team of Martin Powell and Seppo Makinen's Scarlet in Gaslight and A Case of Blind Fear. First, in Scarlet in Gaslight, the Great Detective comes face to face with the master vampire Count Dracula. A beautiful young woman is afflicted with a strange anemia, losing her blood for no apparent reason. Called in to investigate, Holmes and Watson meet the eccentric Dr. Van Helsing, a noted scientist with an obsession for the occult. Together the three men uncover the most insidious plot ever master-minded by Holmes' nemesis, the infamous Professor Moriarty. Only Holmes himself has the ability to stop Moriary's diabolical vampire invasion, but the cost may be his very sanity, his life, and ultimately, his mortal soul. In the second mystery, A Case of Blind Fear, strange occurrences are plaguing 1895 London. A fruit vender sees an apple suspended in mid-air like a balloon, a clerk encounters a ghostly apparition, only its skeleton and internal organs visible, and a large quality of obscure drugs has been stolen from several London chemists. Then there began the murders. Murders that no one seemed to commit. Was it a plague of hallucinations or was London truly haunted by a monstrous unseen evil? The Great Detective is called into the case by Scotland Yard itself to uncover the horror and mystery of the Invisible Man. 216 pages, black and white, $18.95.

VISCO
- The Visual Index of SF Cover Art A trial version of Visco Mark II is now on-line at http://www.sfcovers.net. This a proper web-hosting service with ample room for growth and Terry Gibbons hopes it will be Visco's permanent home. The new version of Visco looks superficially the same as the old one but is significantly different under the covers. Its main new facility is an index of magazine covers by artist, which you can access both by artist name and by magazine issue. In order to achieve that, some radical design changes had to be made. An important by-product of these changes is that most of the HTML for the web site is now generated automatically from the Visco database, which should make it a great deal easier to maintain and develop in the future. The trial version of the new site (2.01) contains only 300 images at present. Once it is checked thoroughly, all of the data will be moved into it. Website owner and webmaster Terry Gibbons would appreciate it if you could visit the new site and give him your feedback on any problems you meet. Meanwhile, the old site with more than 1200 covers, version 1.12, is still at http://visco.users.btopenworld.com and will remain on line for as long as it is needed. Please give the new one a try

AREA
7 If you are looking for some modern pulp, you cannot go wrong with Area 7 by Matthew Reilly. Reilly's frantic story telling is reminiscent of Norvell Page's Spider tales. It is America's most secret base, hidden deep in the Utah desert, an Air Force installation known only as Area 7. And today it has a visitor: the President of the United States. He has come to inspect Area 7, to examine its secrets for himself. But he's going to get more than he bargained for on this trip, because hostile forces are waiting inside. Among the President's helicopter crew, however, is a young Marine. He is quiet, enigmatic, and he hides his eyes behind a pair of silver sunglasses. His name is Schofield. Rumour has it, he's a good man in a storm. Judging by what the President has just walked into, he'd better be! Publishers
Weekly says: Area
7 is now available in mass market paperback for $6.99. In March,
St. Martins Press will release Reilly's Contest in hardcover. Contest
is the fourth novel by Reilly to be released in the U.S., but it is actually his
first novel that he self published in his home country, Australia. Coming in November 2003 is the next Shane Schofield novel. Visit Matthew Reilly online at http://www.matthewreilly.com/

IT'S
A MAN'S WORLD: MEN'S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES, THE POSTWAR PULPS It's a Man's World: Men's Adventure Magazines, The Postwar Pulps will be available in April. Men’s magazines first appeared in great numbers after World War II and the Korean War. Their signature stories, supposedly based on reality, often depicted brawny he-men protecting lustful women from savages, Nazis, Koreans, or Cubans. It’s a Man’s World explores a time when magazines like ARGOSY and TRUE flourished, along with their more sexually charged counterparts such as STAG and FOR MEN ONLY. The book is both an art gallery and a lively history, profiling the magazines’ themes of bondage and S/M, racism, and sexism. Editor Adam Parfrey provides sociological context for the extraordinary covers, interior art, and articles in these cultural artifacts. Extensively illustrated with reproductions from magazines like Saga, Stag, and more, this is a colorful and lively retrospective of masculinity in the cold-war era. The book publisher is Feral House. This is a 260 page hardcover for $29.95. ISBN: 0922915814 It can be ordered from Amazon Books for $20.97.

Another all-new original Kolchak story. Carl is sent to investigate the disappearance of business owner Chester Fredersen. Kolchak, however, tumbles headlong into a hi-tech horror story, as other members of the Fredersen family begin to vanish, and Barry's case of Lou Gherig's Disease goes into an impossible state of remission.

This is a tale of dread and psychological horror from one of the comic medium's acknowledged masters. The two issue mini-series is by Alan Moore with art by Jacen Burrows and sequential adaptation by Antony Johnston and Alan Moore. "The Courtyard was my attempt to write a story within the mythology of H.P. Lovecraft that did not try to regurgitate Lovecraft's style," says creator Alan Moore. "It was an attempt to write a Lovecraftian story that was set in what was then the near future rather than in a Lovecraftian Era. As such, I thought it was a very successful story and it has always been a little favorite of mine in terms of my horror output. I am looking forward a great deal to seeing what Jacen does with the Avatar version."
BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #3 - HOT OFF THE
PRESS! BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #3 is now available! This “Mystery Men” theme issue is 36 pages, including a four-page color section. In The Lord
of Terror, author/historian Robin Walz (who wrote the excellent PULP SURREALISM)
presents a fact-filled overview of the original Fantomas series written by Marcel
Allain and Pierre Souvestre. Glenn Kenny, Also in this issue.... The long-forgotten
Man in the Black Cloak appeared in a 19th-century story paper published
by Frank Tousey. Long-time pulp fan and Old-Time Radio enthusiast Anthony Tollin (who helped Walter Gibson write THE SHADOW SCRAPBOOK) has contributed a fascinating piece. In Stalking the Lost Shadows, Tony details his efforts, and those of his fellow enthusiasts, to collect information on a heretofore undocumented Shadow radio show--produced in San Francisco and distributed only to western and mountain states--featuring the cloaked, gun-slinging crimefighter of Gibson’s novels. We all thought Orson Welles was the first to portray Lamont Cranston on radio--but now we know he wasn’t. In this issue we inaugurate a new department, “Cliffhanger Classics.” Once-prominent fictioneer Arthur Stringer, who sold stories to pulps and slicks alike, created his most memorable character for a 1916 Pathe movie serial. THE IRON CLAW gave top billing to Pearl “Perils of Pauline” White, but the real star was “The Laughing Mask”--the serial screen’s first mystery-man hero. Although the film itself is lost, we have recreated the story from installments of Stringer’s novelization, which was serialized in 1916 newspapers simultaneously with the theatrical release of each Pathe episode. Finally, this issue’s Blood ‘n’ Thunder Reprint is Mellow Drama, Richard Sale’s satirical (and cynical) 1935 short story about the writers, editors, and publishers of single-character pulps. It’s loaded with inside references and makes entertaining reading for those of us “in the know.” Finished copies were picked up today at the printer. Subscribers’ copies will be mailed out early next week. BLOOD

The story runs 8 pages in length and is reprinted in black and white. TBG #36also features Letters to the Editor, Editor’s Corner, News Update, and a great full color cover by Dave Burton. Flash Gordon Volume
2 by Mac Raboy Dark Horse Comics' continues its tradition of finer reprint books with the second volume in the archival collection of Mac Raboy's lengthy Flash Gordon run in June. This series marks the first time that Raboy's Flash Gordon strips have ever been collected. Beginning his comics career in 1940, Emanuel "Mac" Raboy is perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. He graduated from a government-funded art class, was heavily influenced by Alex Raymond's style, and, in the Spring of 1948, he signed on with King Features to illustrate the "Flash Gordon" Sunday page. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Mac Raboy's run on this serial was actually longer than Raymond's. Raboy drew the strip until his death in December of 1967, and several of his early wood engravings (from his fine art days) remain in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum. This is a 256 page, black and white, trade paperback for a retail price of $19.95. The on sale date is 25 June. Flash
Gordon Volume 1 originally had an on sale date of 15 January.

King Conan: Crown of Iron TheArnoldFans is reporting that the Wachowski Brothers, who were in talks for a long while to produce the next barbarian epic, seem to be involved again. The pair pulled out a while back due to their commitments to both "The Matrix" sequels, however with both those films almost complete they've apparently once again hooked on 'Conan' and are not only pegging that as their next project, but have managed to get both Warners and John Milius back onboard and interested. Milius is currently looking into Turkey and Rome locations for shooting major battle scenes. Pre-production will reportedly begin in August or November. The involvement of Conan himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, remains unclear. Insiders recently indicated that Conan Properties, Inc. wanted to ditch Arnold in favor of a younger, hotter and less expensive new actor.
King Kong The Digital Bits reported that Warner Bros. will not release a 70th anniversary edition DVD of "King Kong" this year. "The studio very much wanted to make it happen this year, given that it's the film's 70th anniversary, but their greater concern is to make sure that the film is presented in the highest possible quality on DVD. Apparently, the process of fully restoring and remastering the film has been very time consuming and the studio wants to make sure it's done properly. If all goes well, look for Kong in 2004."

Tarzan - WB Finds Its Tarzan
Down Under Zap2it.com reported this week that the actor who's going to play the title role in The WB's "Tarzan" is a 22-year-old native of Australia. The network has cast Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel as Tarzan in its pilot for next season, which updates the classic story by bringing the jungle boy to present-day New York. There he meets Jane, a detective who will be played by newcomer Sarah Wayne Callies. The WB and Warner Bros. TV, which is producing the show, conducted a wide-ranging search for Tarzan before finding Fimmel. "He's got not simply a great look but that feeling that you get that this is going to be a big star," Warner Bros. TV president Peter Roth tells The Hollywood Reporter. Roth calls Callies "one of the most exciting young actresses I've seen in many years." The WB has said its "Tarzan" will focus at least as much on Jane as it will on Tarzan's struggle to adapt to life in New York, where his uncle is head of a powerful company. Jordan Levin, the network's entertainment president, says the pilot has more in common with "Beauty and the Beast" than the old Tarzan movies.
