| Lost Treasures from the Pulps - Collections One and Two! Peter the Brazen The Peter the Brazen adventure series has long been considered by pulp fans as perhaps the greatest action series ever to be published in the pulp magazines. In particular, Peter’s three adventures fighting the Chinese mastermind, the Blue Scorpion, rank among the finest heroic adventures ever written. While a few Peter the Brazen stories have been reprinted in scarce fan publications, a majority of these novelets and novels have been out of print for more than a half-century. Complimenting the entire series of Peter the Brazen stories, from 1919-1920 and 1930-1935, these volumes include special articles by Rick Lai and Robert Weinberg on the stories, their settings, and their author, George F. Worts. Both volumes are newly typeset on quality paper with matching dust jackets. Along with reproductions of all the covers and interior illustrations from the series, the books also include new maps showing the world of Peter the Brazen. The set of two books will be available sometime in late April. An advance set of the books should be available at the Windy City Pulp and Paperback Show in April, but regular copies will not be shipped until a few weeks after the show. LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS feature open print runs, so the books will never be out of print. However, after the first printing of the volumes, it may be months before they are available again. Moorcock - The Elric Saga Universal Pictures and Chris and Paul Weitz's production shingle, Depth of Field, have optioned "The Elric Saga," a multi-part, Tolkein-esque fantasy series written by Michael Moorcock. The series began with 1972's "Elric of Melnibone." The Depth of Field option covers 11 books: the original six installments of the series and five subsequent novels that touch on the saga. The film adaptation, which will be produced but not written or directed by the Weitz brothers, is conceived as a potential trilogy whose first installment will be culled from the series' first six volumes. The producers plan to shop the book to writers and directors. Moorcock will co-produce the project. It will also be produced by Depth of Field topper Andrew Miano. | |

This a proper web-hosting service with ample room for growth and Terry Gibbons hopes it will be Visco's permanent home. The new version of Visco looks superficially the same as the old one but is significantly different under the covers. Its main new facility is an index of magazine covers by artist, which you can access both by artist name and by magazine issue. In order to achieve that, some radical design changes had to be made. An important by-product of these changes is that most of the HTML for the web site is now generated automatically from the Visco database, which should make it a great deal easier to maintain and develop in the future. The trial version of the new site (2.01) contains only 300 images at present. Once it is checked thoroughly, all of the data will be moved into it. Website owner and webmaster Terry Gibbons would appreciate it if you could visit the new site and give him your feedback on any problems you meet. by Frank Tousey. Long-time pulp fan and Old-Time Radio enthusiast Anthony Tollin (who helped Walter Gibson write THE SHADOW SCRAPBOOK) has contributed a fascinating piece. In Stalking the Lost Shadows, Tony details his efforts, and those of his fellow enthusiasts, to collect information on a heretofore undocumented Shadow radio show--produced in San Francisco and distributed only to western and mountain states--featuring the cloaked, gun-slinging crimefighter of Gibson’s novels. We all thought Orson Welles was the first to portray Lamont Cranston on radio--but now we know he wasn’t. In this issue we inaugurate a new department, “Cliffhanger Classics.” Once-prominent fictioneer Arthur Stringer, who sold stories to pulps and slicks alike, created his most memorable character for a 1916 Pathe movie serial. THE IRON CLAW gave top billing to Pearl “Perils of Pauline” White, but the real star was “The Laughing Mask”--the serial screen’s first mystery-man hero. Although the film itself is lost, we have recreated the story from installments of Stringer’s novelization, which was serialized in 1916 newspapers simultaneously with the theatrical release of each Pathe episode. Finally, this issue’s Blood ‘n’ Thunder Reprint is Mellow Drama, Richard Sale’s satirical (and cynical) 1935 short story about the writers, editors, and publishers of single-character pulps. It’s loaded with inside references and makes entertaining reading for those of us “in the know.” Finished copies were picked up today at the printer. | Flash Gordon Volume
2 by Mac Raboy Dark Horse Comics' continues its tradition of finer reprint books with the second volume in the archival collection of Mac Raboy's lengthy Flash Gordon run in June. This series marks the first time that Raboy's Flash Gordon strips have ever been collected. Beginning his comics career in 1940, Emanuel "Mac" Raboy is perhaps best known for his work on Captain Marvel, Jr. and the Green Lama in the 1940s. He graduated from a government-funded art class, was heavily influenced by Alex Raymond's style, and, in the Spring of 1948, he signed on with King Features to illustrate the "Flash Gordon" Sunday page. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Mac Raboy's run on this serial was actually longer than Raymond's. Raboy drew the strip until his death in December of 1967, and several of his early wood engravings (from his fine art days) remain in the permanent collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum. | King Conan: Crown of Iron TheArnoldFans is reporting that the Wachowski Brothers, who were in talks for a long while to produce the next barbarian epic, seem to be involved again. The pair pulled out a while back due to their commitments to both "The Matrix" sequels, however with both those films almost complete they've apparently once again hooked on 'Conan' and are not only pegging that as their next project, but have managed to get both Warners and John Milius back onboard and interested. Milius is currently looking into Turkey and Rome locations for shooting major battle scenes. Pre-production will reportedly begin in August or November. The involvement of Conan himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, remains unclear. Insiders recently indicated that Conan Properties, Inc. wanted to ditch Arnold in favor of a younger, hotter and less expensive new actor. | |
| King Kong The Digital Bits reported that Warner Bros. will not release a 70th anniversary edition DVD of "King Kong" this year. "The studio very much wanted to make it happen this year, given that it's the film's 70th anniversary, but their greater concern is to make sure that the film is presented in the highest possible quality on DVD. Apparently, the process of fully restoring and remastering the film has been very time consuming and the studio wants to make sure it's done properly. If all goes well, look for Kong in 2004." | |

| Rawhide Kid The first issue of Marvel Comics Rawhide Kid five issue miniseries is now available. The longest running Marvel Western character is the Rawhide Kid, who debuted in 1955. Nicknamed “Rawhide” because he was raised near Rawhide, Texas; and “Kid” due to his below average height, the Rawhide Kid’s first series was cancelled after 16 issues, but later restarted by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby with issue #17 in 1960. The Kid’s series lasted through issue #151 in 1979. The

| Tarzan - WB Finds Its Tarzan
Down Under Zap2it.com reported this week that the actor who's going to play the title role in The WB's "Tarzan" is a 22-year-old native of Australia. The network has cast Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel as Tarzan in its pilot for next season, which updates the classic story by bringing the jungle boy to present-day New York. There he meets Jane, a detective who will be played by newcomer Sarah Wayne Callies. The WB and Warner Bros. TV, which is producing the show, conducted a wide-ranging search for Tarzan before finding Fimmel. "He's got not simply a great look but that feeling that you get that this is going to be a big star," Warner Bros. TV president Peter Roth tells The Hollywood Reporter. Roth calls Callies "one of the most exciting young actresses I've seen in many years." The WB has said its "Tarzan" will focus at least as much on Jane as it will on Tarzan's struggle to adapt to life in New York, where his uncle is head of a powerful company. Jordan Levin, the network's entertainment president, says the pilot has more in common with "Beauty and the Beast" than the old Tarzan movies. | |
