Avatar Press - The Courtyard The second issue of Alan Moore's The Courtyard published by Avatar Press will be available in February. This is a tale of dread and psychological horror from one of the comic medium's acknowledged masters. The two issue mini-series is written by Alan Moore with art by Jacen Burrows and sequential adaptation by Antony Johnston and Moore. "The Courtyard was my attempt to write a story within the mythology of H.P. Lovecraft that did not try to regurgitate Lovecraft's style," says creator Alan Moore. "It was an attempt to write a Lovecraftian story that was set in what was then the near future rather than in a Lovecraftian Era. As such, I thought it was a very successful story and it has always been a little favorite of mine in terms of my horror output. I am looking forward a great deal to seeing what Jacen does with the Avatar version." This
item can be pre-ordered through your local comic shop.

Conan Movie - King Conan:
Crown of Iron On 25 November, IGN FilmForce reported that they learned from sources close to King Conan: Crown of Iron that writer/director John Milius, star Arnold Schwarzenegger, producers Larry and Andy Wachowski, and Warner Brothers are no longer involved with the development or production of any eventual Conan movie. The reason for this turn of events is because Conan Properties, Inc., the company that owns the Conan character, has decided not to allow either Warners or the Wachowski brothers to renew their option on the material. This option was apparently on the verge of expiration. The article indicated that Conan Properties, Inc. was frustrated with the slow development process that Conan 3 (a.k.a. King Conan) was enduring at Warners, as well as with the Wachowskis' ongoing work on The Matrix sequels. (Apparently, production on Conan 3 wouldn't have commenced until the Wachowskis were finished with The Matrix series.) The article went on to reveal some changes that fans can expect from this new Conan movie. With Milius and Schwarzenegger no longer involved, Conan Properties allegedly wants to set up Conan at another studio - no word yet on where - with the hopes of producing "a kinder, gentler Conan," in the words of one source. Conan Properties wants to cast a younger thesp as the title character and to produce a more "friendly" Conan film on a less epic (i.e., cheaper) scale using The Scorpion King as its template. (Spider-Man was another example of the kind of audience-friendly film that Conan Properties, Inc. wants to emulate.) Conan Properties, hoping to strike while the iron is hot, want to produce a cheapie Conan flick that will enjoy a boffo opening weekend. Swedish-based Paradox Entertainment recently bought 20% of Conan Sales Company, which according to a company press release, holds all intellectual property rights in and associated with the character Conan. This deal gives Paradox a say in all Conan licensing partnerships, including the film deal that was set up at Warner Brothers. In a followup article on 26 November, IGN FilmForce reported that they were contacted today by Fredrik Malmberg of Conan Properties, Inc., the company that owns the character of (and controls the film rights to) Conan the Barbarian. Mr. Malmberg contacted them in regards to their report that broke the news that writer/director John Milius, star Arnold Schwarzenegger, and producers Larry and Andy Wachowski were no longer involved with the making of King Conan: Crown of Iron. While never fully dismissing IGN FilmForce's report, Mr. Malmberg did assure them that Conan Properties keeps its "ears to the ground and we do listen to the fans." Mr. Malmberg advised FilmForce that Conan Properties "always and regularly receive pitches about how and when Conan should be made. Some people tell us Conan should be kinder. Some say less expensive. A lot think quicker. There are always advises left and right. This is because Conan is at the top of many people's minds and Conan is a great franchise. I can definitely tell you the next Conan movie will NOT be cheaper. It will have the best production value, the best studio and the best director. There are no exceptions. As far as we are concerned, Warners is not out and we are in discussions with them about the project." Malmberg did concede that "the wait for new entertainment has been long and we need to see some action on the screen. And, as a comment, Conan is the real Barbarian. Scorpion King was not." He also revealed that Conan Properties "will shortly have our new website up to get closer to the fan community." When
pressed to comment as to whether Milius, Schwarzenegger and the Wachowskis are
off the project, Mr. Malmberg replied that

War of the Worlds Pendragon Pictures announces that it is upping the planned release date of War of the Worlds, its feature motion picture production of H.G. Wells' classic novel, from summer 2005 to summer 2004. Set in England at the turn-of-the-century as in the book, Pendragon Pictures production of War of the Worlds will be an accurate translation to the screen. Their previous modern-day version of War of the Worlds was abandoned due to the events of September 11th. The majority of fans supported Pendragon Pictures' actions, though some were displeased. "Some people wrote us to say they thought we were giving in to the terrorists by shutting the picture down," reflects producer Susan Goforth. "What they didn't know is that our updated version had scenes with people jumping from burning buildings and planes falling out of the sky. Portions of the script were so close to the WTC attack, I don't think the world would ever have accepted that version. There is a staggering amount of interest from all over the world in our production of War of the Worlds. Overwhelmingly people are supporting our decision to set the picture in the correct time." Director Timothy Hines adds, "In light of recent and ongoing world events, and with the urging of respected Wells supporters like Charles Keller, director of the Wells Society, I am convinced it's the only way to do it. It was the first extraterrestrial story and still, over a hundred years later, the most revered by the world. "There is a great deal of responsibility in getting it right. War of the Worlds is the perfect egg of a story. It has everything—suspense, terror, action, alien invaders and the test of humanity's ability to survive under unimaginable opposition and aggressive force. I will not get in the way of the material. A studio executive expounded at length to me how the story needed modern changes and would require some amount of 'derivative homage' to the previous film version. War of the Worlds doesn't need to be rewritten or embellished. Those who think that are missing the story somehow or haven't read it. It has held up over a hundred years for a reason. It works. Period." Timothy Hines is being tight lipped about the cast of War of the Worlds at this time, stating only, "A few pleasant surprises are coming down the pike with the cast."

Conan
Returns to Comics in 2003 This week, Dark Horse Comics President Mike Richardson announced a new publishing program featuring the classic Robert E. Howard creation Conan the Barbarian. DHC’s new monthly ongoing series will include all new stories based on the character and also incorporate adaptations of Howard’s original Conan tales. "I am very honored and excited to bring this classic character back to the comics world," commented Richardson. "We will be working closely with Fredrik Malmberg of Conan Properties to ensure the highest quality stories and art to do this legendary character justice." According to Dark Horse, “First introduced as ‘Conan the Cimmerian’ in the 1930's, Howard's character quickly garnered an enormous following the world over. Over the past 70 years the barbarian hero has been brought to life in books, comics, television, and film. Recently rumored to be in the works is a new Conan feature film!” "Conan has been a major comics franchise for many years," Fredrik Malmberg remarked. "Dark Horse was our number one choice when we looked for a new licensee and we are extremely pleased with the creative approach they are planning." The Dark Horse Conan series is scheduled to launch mid 2003 and we’ll have more creative details when they’re available. A spokesperson for Dark Horse also confirmed they are working with the Swedish Company Paradox Entertainment, who in September announced the purchase of 20% of the Conan Sales Company, the corporation which holds all right to Conan, with the option to purchase all remaining stock. The agreement gives Paradox the management of the Conan property.

Fearless According to VARIETY, another superhero could be headed to The WB, this one courtesy of executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The network is developing Fearless, an hour-long drama project about a girl born without the gene for fear. Evan Charnov and Vincent Ngo are writing the pilot script and will serve as executive producers, along with Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman. Jeremy Carver is also attached as a writer. Warner Bros. TV is producing the project in association with Jerry Bruckheimer Productions. Based on Francine Pascal's series of young
adult novels, Fearless revolves around Gaia Moore, whose mom was murdered and
whose antiterrorist operative dad is in hiding. Her genetic mutation and special
training make her a superhero of sorts, but she's also just a high school student,
a la early Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
James Bond Pierce Brosnan told VARIETY writer Amy Archerd that he will play James Bond one more time in what would be his fifth film as Secret Agent Man, 007. The fifth mission for the actor might take place in 2005 and he is hoping for a raise in his final James Bond outing. Actor Michael Madsen is expect to return in the film too.

Jurassic Park 4 Sam Neill was in Queenstown, New Zealand recently and spoke about the fourth 'Jurassic' flick: "Yeah, Steven Spielberg and his people are quite busy prepping another one. There is a chance you'll see me in it. I'm as surprised as anyone, because I didn't think there was any way they could get Alan Grant involved again. But they came up with a clever idea. Steven just blew me away with the story....something frightnening is happening concerning those dinosaurs that doesn't necessarily bode well for us humans. Scientists never seem to learn". What sort of tone can we expect? "You know that feeling when you first saw the original film, and you were so in awe, and felt so swept away and mesmerised by the sheer majesty of it all? I believe this premise has the potential to elicit that same kind of response. Out of all the concepts that've been created for these movies, this is possibly my favorite".

Night Shade Books Night Shade Books is publishing a series of volumes collecting H.P. Lovecraft's letters. Rather than chronological, as with the Arkham editions, the Night Shade editions will be thematic. Each volume will be dedicated to a specific subject, time, or place. The Arkham editions have severely edited/cut the letters, eliminating a great deal of material. These editions will be uncut, containing the complete texts of the letters, as well as any additional illustrations. The Night Shade editions will be far more comprehensive. The
first volume is Mysteries of Time and
Spirit: Letters of H.P. Lovecraft and Donald Wandrei, edited by S.T. Joshi
and David E. Schultz. This volume collects all known correspondence between
Lovecraft and Wandrei. Most of Mysteries of Time and Spirit is unpublished
material, as will be most of the letters volumes produced in the future.
Mysteries of Time and Spirit is available as a $40 trade hardcover or a
$20 trade paperback, and will run about 450 pages. Shipping is $5.50 for
the first book and $1.00 for each additional book. Night Shade Books reports that the fourth Manly Wade Wellman Volume, Sin’s Doorway and Other Ominous Entrances, is also due shortly. Night

The Pulp Rack - New website
update! Max Brand Photo-Bibliography Jon Tuska has compiled a marvelous resource that every Frederick Faust reader should own: THE MAX BRAND COMPANION. A great research tool included in this volume is Tuska's "Frederick Faust: A Bibliography." Based on Tuska's work, the Pulp Rack is building a photo-bibliography, which provides a visual representation for the Faust works that appeared in magazines. This is a work in progress -- even though a few years are posted, they aren't necessarily complete. Additional scans will be added to the photo-biblio as they are obtained. Doc Savage Film VARIETY reported that Frank Darabont's Darkwoods Productions is committed to a big-screen version of Doc Savage. Darabont told Variety that it now appears unlikely that Chuck Russell would direct this one. A "devoted action helmer" is being sought for the pulp piece. At one time Arnold Schwartzenegger was attached to play Doc. The Arnold Fans website does not list Doc Savage as one of his future projects, but does list Crusade (which Will Smith wants to do), I Am Legend and Sgt. Rock.
